"The distribution of turbulence in an industrial scale mechanical flotation cell and its effect on flotation kinetics was studied using a fully instrumented 3m³ cell. The cell was operated at a copper concentrator in Australia with different combinations of airflow rates, impeller speeds and sizes and cell aspect ratio providing a wide range of hydrodynamic conditions. An analysis of the overall flotation cell performance showed that the overall copper recoveries were very similar for the conditions tested. However, by decoupling pulp effects from froth effects it was possible to evaluate whether the changes made affected the pulp zone and/or froth zone responses. The analysis showed that the overall recovery has the potential to be up to 7% higher, if not limited by froth recovery. The cell hydrodynamics were characterised by the overall energy dissipation rate and, to understand the distribution of turbulence within the cell, localised measurements were made using a piezoelectric vibration sensor. By comparing the metallurgical performance of the cell with the different hydrodynamic conditions it was found that the collection zone flotation rate constant was not directly related to overall energy dissipation, as is commonly observed at laboratory scale, where energy is usually only changed by varying impeller speed. In this study, energy dissipation rate was varied using not only impeller speed, but also the size of the impeller and the cell aspect ratio. In these circumstances, the best correlation was found to be between the collection zone flotation rate constant and the distribution of turbulence, i.e. the size of the turbulent zone."

This paper presents the experiences and views of women involved in the mining industry as determined from a questionnaire that was circulated across the Canadian mining industry. Globally, there have been significant studies done to understand the historic and global variety of women?s participation in this industry1. The reason for focusing on women?s experiences here in Canada is because women?s percentage representation at 14.4% in the mineral industry workforce falls below the overall labour force average of 47.4%2. Notably, a recent article in the Globe and Mail newspaper points out that adequate representation of women in leading of organizations is more of a matter of competitiveness and innovation rather than purely a ?women?s issue?3. This paper will provide some insight into the reasons why women join and stay in the mining industry and shed some light into the reasons for the overall low representation in this sector. The authors believe, as stated in a study from the London Business School, that a gender-balanced workforce is one way of providing the best results in areas that drive innovation4. Women represent a key stakeholder group that can help enhance the mining industry?s sustainability through innovation. The women who responded to the questionnaire represent many different areas within the mining industry, including a broad range of roles in industry, government, academia and in the supplies and services sector. The paper is intended to raise awareness about issues that women encounter that contribute or detract from career satisfaction in the mining industry. The survey provides an overall understanding of why women pursue or work in mining, and why women either remain or choose to leave it. The advantages and disadvantages experienced by women are highlighted, along with a summary of the possible initiatives that could be undertaken by employers as opportunities to improve the attraction of the mining industry for career minded women. As well, the survey provides a summary of the top ten features that are already in place at various organizations and community groups that have been identified as key for supporting and encouraging women to join and remain in the industry. Not surprisingly, the survey identifies that one of the key ingredients for retention of women in mining is the provision of mentors and sponsors. Another key aspect for retention is the provision of progressive employment policies that address the need for a degree of flexibility in work hours and a culture of balance between work and personal life demands. The survey and results are portrayed only from a female perspective since it is largely women?s perceptions that will inevitably be transmitted to others who plan on entering the field.

Several years ago, it was decided to experiment with the use of high-pressure water to bring in finger hangups and reduce the amount of secondary blasting necessary. It was argued that the velocity effect of the high-pressure water would bring down hangups without unduly wetting the ore. Water under a head of about 550 ft. was installed in certain slusher drifts. Ordinary ¾ in. water hose, with a nozzle opening of % in., was used, and water was impinged on the fines under a hangup. Results were excellent. About half the total number of hangups were brought in with high-pressure water without blasting and the cost of this part of the slushing operation was reduced about 50 per cent. Operations were speeded up, dust counts and safety hazards were reduced, and a more desirable working place was secured. The additional water added to the ore was under one per cent and caused no inconvenience in slushing, haulage, or crushing operations. Usually the ore would absorb all of the water, so that none of it would enter the loading drifts. The entire mine, developed by slusher drifts, is being equipped with high-pressure water. Heating Mine by Compressor Cooling Water Several years ago, the problem of heating certain sections of the mine during freezing weather became important. It was calculated that there was sufficient heat in the compressor cooling water to heat the incoming ventilating air current to above freezing, if such heat could be transferred from the water to the air. All schemes of radiation from pipe were rejected as too cumbersome, costly and impractical. It was thought that by spraying the heated water from the compressor cooling system into the incoming air, a satisfactory heat exchange could be accomplished. The only objection was that the sprayed water would freeze and might fill the air-intake drift. However, when water at about 75° to 80°F. was sprayed at the rate of 200 gal. per minute through a bank of sprays into the incoming and freezing air current, this air was thereby heated to above freezing; and although some ice was built up in the air drift, the amount was not objectionable. Occasionally the built-up ice was picked down into the outgoing water stream, which removed it. The entire south and westerly parts of the mine were prevented from freezing. Concreting for Hangups Considerable trouble was experienced in securing hangups of fine ore in slusher fingers that needed repairing. Regular methods of timbering were unsatisfactory. Now, a slab of concrete is poured over the top of the muck by Pumperete machine, almost filling a finger, which gives a satisfactory slab to work under for making the needed repairs. THE Portland Cement Association was organized more than a third of a century ago by a group of cement manufacturers, to do cooperatively the educational and research work needed to ensure proper use of their product. Specifically, the Association has a threefold purpose: (1) to search out facts to ensure the best possible service from concrete; (2) to give the widest possible circulation to facts affecting the use of concrete; (3) to urge practical application of those facts on actual building projects. An organization of technically trained men conducts many research projects in the Association laboratories, interprets their findings and applies them practically in the field. The net effect of this work has been to improve the design and prolong the life of roads, bridges, industrial, commercial and public buildings, homes, farm structures and concrete products. The results of this technical research and experimentation are made available to the entire construction industry through bulletins and reports. Information is also released to the general public through newspapers, magazines and Association publications. In addition to a technical staff in the general office in Chicago, the Association has district offices in 22 cities. Field engineers cover 37 states, the District of Columbia and British Columbia, to give service to users of Portland cement. ACCIDENT PREVENTION During the early part of the century, there began a complete transformation in the processes of manufacturing cement. Electricity, with its attendant hazards, was beginning to replace steam; huge rotary kilns and tube mills were being substituted for the vertical kiln and "coffee grinder" mill. Only a few far-sighted leaders realized the import of these innovations, and they also recognized the fact that workmen must be protected against the hazards of the new machinery. By their sincerity and firm purpose they infused into the whole industry the concept of industry's responsibility for safeguarding employees. Narrow vein underground stope design engineers in Australia have expressed significant interest in the requirements and methodology for developing site-specific stability charts. This is largely due to a concern that existing stope stability charts inadequately take into account factors influencing narrow vein stope stability, such as the effect of backfill abutments and the effect of in stope pillars. This paper presents conclusions from a comprehensive statistical examination of case history requirements for a site specific stability chart and critiques literature arguments for site-specific charts. A new statistical analysis technique and a large comprehensive stability database enabled the authors to quantify case history requirements and any site-specific effects the model exhibits. The analyses indicated that a reliable stable-failure boundary requires at least 150 case histories, of which a minimum of 10 percent should be unstable stope surfaces. Marginal site-specific effects were observed for the operating conditions captured within the database. The authors conclude that the apparent site-specific effects noted in previous literature are attributable to operating conditions inadequately represented in the database. Such operating conditions could induce erroneous stability predictions at any site, and are therefore not truly site-specific. Following from these conclusions, a strategy for taking into account operating conditions particularly relevant to narrow vein mining has been proposed. In particular, the development of a chart that accounts for the effect of backfill abutments on stope stability. Backfill abutment effects are particularly relevant to mechanised narrow vein mining methods such as modified Avoca. Collaboration from at least five sites is required to obtain access to relevant data and underground drives for geotechnical mapping. Preliminary estimations indicate that approximately three months fieldwork is required to meet case history requirements. CMS data in conjunction with 3-dimensional design software will be used to calculate equivalent linear overbreak/slough (ELOS). In contrast to stable, failure, major failure and caving categorical variables, ELOS is an objective and continuous stability variable and is therefore, more conducive to mathematical modelling.

"Mine water generated from underground coal mining operations contains both dissolved and particulate solids. Dissolved solids primarily consist of sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorides and sulfates. When discharged to a receiving stream without treatment, these constituents create a potentially toxic environment for aquatic life. A case study is presented to discuss how a centralized treatment plant treats mine water from six locations to meet discharge limitations for chlorides. Located in West Virginia, this facility consistently achieves less than the NPDES permit limitation of 218 mg/L chlorides in the discharge while generating almost zero liquid waste. The dissolved solids concentration in the influent ranges between 5,000 and 10,000 mg/L, with chloride concentrations of 1,000 to 2,000 mg/L and sulfate concentrations of 2,000 to 6,000 mg/L. The mine water is treated using advanced treatment technology to produce clean water for discharge or reuse. The treatment process comprises aeration, softening, filtration, reverse osmosis, RO reject softening, evaporation, crystallization, final effluent remineralization and sludge dewatering. The solid waste generated in the treatment process is landfilled on site. The leachate is sent back to the facility’s thermal treatment process. Because no liquid waste leaves the property, this plant is termed a “Zero Liquid Waste” (ZLW) facility. INTRODUCTION The advanced water treatment system was built to meet a new 218 mg/l regulatory limitation imposed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for chlorides discharged to surface waters. The system is designed to treat a maximum flow of approximately 5 million gallons per day (795 m3/h) of mine water. The treatment process utilizes reverse osmosis (RO) membrane treatment to achieve the effluent criteria, and evaporation and crystallization technology to manage the RO concentrate from the water treatment process. As a result, the system produces clean water for discharge while generating zero liquid waste. The effluent water can be used for industrial purposes or discharged to a receiving stream. A Water Impact Index (WIIx) study indicated that discharge of this high-quality water into the Monongahela River watershed may improve the water quality for downstream water users. The waste produced in the treatment process, including softening sludge and salt, is disposed of in an on-site landfill."

The material in this paper is intended simply, to be an inquiry into some of the theoretical aspects of the occurrence of methane and carbon dioxide in coal, with a brief resume of the more recent literature. Several discussions on various phases of the subject have been published, a few of which (4, 20, 25, 88, 90)4/ have more or less extensive bibliographies of tie earlier literature. In large measure the pertinent literature deals with the unusual aspects of the subject, and in consequence it might appear that the normal aspects have not been given due consideration here. The latter information is largely a matter of practical field experience, and since that which is normal to one locality is often abnormal to another no sharp differentiation appears to be necessary or, in fact, possible. No attempt will be made to present a critical discussion of the relations between the presence of gases in coal and pertinent geologic features or mining practice. Although the presence of foreign gases in the ventilating air of many mines is not particularly noticeable, in many others the evolution of methane and perhaps small amounts of carbon dioxide (or sometimes the reverse - large amounts of carbon. dioxide with perhaps sore methane) is quite apparent.

The concrete masonry industry has developed and refined concrete masonry units by producing a variety of quality products on automated machines. In the sixties, architectural concrete masonry units gained popularity. In the seventies, the concrete paver market expanded. In the eighties, segmental retaining wall units became popular. The industry continues to research and develop new products and applications for concrete masonry to satisfy the needs of designers, specifiers, installers and owners. Both existing and innovative technologies in the concrete masonry industry are discussed.

"Hydraulic transportation efficiency and production optimization are considerations in the surface extraction of Athabasca oil sand deposits. To reduce the dependence on haul trucks, it is possible to extend the hydraulic transport system to production faces using a mobile at-face slurry system (AFSS). The flexible arrangement of connected pipelines transports slurried minerals from the mining face to the processing plant. An experimentally verified mathematical model indicates the friction loss of oil sand slurry associated with the AFSS. Laboratory-scale testing enables extended analyses for examining pipeline slurry transport in an oil sands environment.RÉSUMÉ L’optimisation de l’efficacité du transport hydraulique et de la production sont des considérations importantes dans le domaine de l’exploitation à ciel ouvert des gisements de sables bitumineux de l’Athabasca. Afin de réduire la dépendance envers les camions de transport, on envisage d’étendre le système de transport hydraulique aux fronts de taille à l’aide d’un système mobile de transport des matériaux sous forme de boue à partir du front de taille (AFSS, de l’anglais at-face slurry system). L’organisation flexible des conduites reliées permet le transport de minéraux à l’état de boue du front d’exploitation jusqu’à l’usine de traitement. Un modèle mathématique vérifié de manière expérimentale indique la perte de charge par frottement des schlamms provenant du traitement des sables bitumineux associée à l’utilisation de l’AFSS. This paper will focus on developing the mathematical models governing the friction and head losses within the AFSS concept.Background of the problemLarge-capacity shovels and dump trucks are increasingly used for excavation, loading, and hauling in the operation of surface mining. Production cost and efficiency optimization are demanded during the Athabasca oil sands (Alberta, Canada) mining process to secure North America’s energy supply. Increasing haulage distances, rugged terrain, and a constrained mine environment are conditions that will reduce the effectiveness of the shovel-truck haulage system (Frimpong, Szymanski, & Changirwa, 2003). In such conditions, the tire heat index and weight, distance, and time limits for truck haulage can be exceeded, simultaneously creating extreme tire wear and high maintenance costs. In addition to low production cost and equipment effectiveness, a mining environment also requires efficient waste-material recycling and distribution. Waste materials need to be recycled from the processing plant to a new destination such as a tailings dam, or replaced in mined-out areas such as backfill. The Athabasca oil sands configuration and location characteristics result in a mining environment that would benefit from flexible pipelines for constant production and an efficient waste-material recycling process."

The common couplings for joining sections of helical piles with an outside diameter of 6.625 inches and 8.625 inches are square on square, flange to flange, external pipe sleeve, internal pipe sleeve, and welded joint. Each coupling type has advantages and disadvantages in efficiency, capacity, installation, and economics of the installed pile. All these coupling types have been used in the helical pile market in North America for various applications and designs. Many of these applications require on-site testing, but test records are not typically shared with the helical pile industry. Due to the lack of information available for square on square and flange to flange couplings, testing was done to compare the efficiency of installation, load to deflection response, and torque to capacity ratios of external pipe sleeve, square on square, and flange to flange couplings. Field installations and tension tests were performed in non-cohesive (sand type) soil near Caseyville, IL and in cohesive (clay type) soil in Centralia, MO. The data collected during these tests included rotations per foot during installation, installation torque, applied pressure, and deflection. The results of this testing are analyzed and discussed within this paper. The results indicate that the square to square coupling is the most efficient of the designs tested, but this conclusion cannot be fully justified without further testing due to the variability in the data gathered and the small number of piles tested. INTRODUCTION A helical pile is typically assumed to be a medium-displacement pile when its outside diameter is between 4.5 inches and 8 inches and a high-displacement pile when its outside diameter is greater than 8 inches. A helical pile designer has multiple options when selecting a coupling type for medium- to high-displacement helical piles. Each type of coupling has advantages and disadvantages and must be analyzed on the bases of efficiency, capacity, installation, and economics of a project. Typical couplings that are chosen by designers include square on square, flange to flange, external pipe sleeve, internal pipe sleeve, and welded joint. A helical pile must transfer axial, lateral, bending moment, and torsional loads, and the coupling must be designed to effectively and efficiently transfer each type of load. During the installation of a helical pile, the rate of penetration and the disturbance of soil layers play a critical role in the efficiency and torque to capacity ratio (Kt) of the pile. It is common for a coupling to protrude beyond the outside diameter of the pipe section being used. This is necessary for the function of certain coupling types and can facilitate the connection of couplings. However, it causes increased soil disturbance and reduce the rate of penetration due to soil bearing against the protruding portion of the coupling. A helical pile designer typically will work to minimize the coupling protrusion and create a pile with optimal installation efficiency but may choose a design with lower installation efficiency if it offers sufficient economic advantage.

Germanium is widely used in many fields, and the production of germanium is very important. The effects of initial sulfuric acid concentration, liquid to solid ratio and other parameters on the leaching rate of germanium and zinc from germanium-bearing zinc oxide has been studied. The occurrence and form of germanium and other elements in the leach feed and the leach residue were studied by EPMA, XRD and chemical analyses. The experiments showed that the leaching rate of germanium and zinc was 91% and 88%, respectively under optimal conditions. Wurtzite was the main limiting factor for the leaching rate of zinc while the leaching rate of germanium was limited by insoluble germanium compounds. Furthermore, it was found that some germanium was bound up in galena in the leach residue. These results may be helpful for further improving the leaching rate of germanium in germanium-bearing zinc oxide.

Many theories and documented surveys are listed in both support and refutation of this reported phenomenon, and the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to obtain direct field information in order to determine the statistical credibility of a radiometric method of predicting petroleum accumulation.

When this country went into the war, but two concerns, The Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Midvale Steel and Ordnance Co., knew how to make steel fit for great cannons and at these concerns there were relatively few men who knew the whole art. Fortunately, certain of these men put their knowledge at the service of the Government, and proceeded to instruct the metallurgists at the arsenals and at various steel works. Doctor Howe, then chairman of the Engineering Division of the National Research Council, suggested that this work might be facilitated, and the number of effective gun-steel makers thereby increased, if a detailed description of the best practice could be written, giving the reasons for the various steps, and issued with the endorsement of a committee composed of those who were evidently the most competent authorities. It was thought that something would be gained by clarification of the subject, and something by the eminent authority of the members of the committee. To that end, the Engineering Division appointed a committee, consisting of the gentlemen whose names follow, to mention on1y those who retained their connection with it. At this time there were serious difficulties in the manufacture, for the Government. of aircraft and high-speed engine crankshafts, of certain ordnance forgings, and of shells for both the Army and Navy. This Committee was asked to study and report upon these, with a view to betterment of practice. There were indications that the source of some of the difficulties went back to the melting of the steel and the production of the ingot. Hence, the committee first studied steel melting and ingot production, in order to guide the wartime manufacturers to an even larger percentage of useful production from the steel initially melted. Progress made in a second and final metallurgical investigation made by the Bureau of Mines of near-surface Hawaiian bauxitic deposits from Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Islands, and on a deeper deposit from Kauai, is reported. Previously reported Al2O3 extractions were increased by modifying conventional processes to fit the ore being tested. Increases in Al2O3 extraction were: Kauai, from 82.8 to 95.4 percent; Maui, 85.5 to 94.1 percent; and Hawaii, from 79.5 to 86.4 percent. Use of a "caustic-reduction sinter, leaching, and magnetic separation process" for Al2O3 extraction also produced an iron concentrate of commercial grade, except for titanium content. No successful method was developed for the recovery of a satisfactory titanium concentrate.

MOCCA is a Multivariable Optimal Constrained Control Algorithm developed specifically for non-square industrial control applications with practical difficulties such as interactions, time delays, constraints, modelling development, etc. MOCCA consists of an off-line simulation/translation module, for tuning the control parameters, and an on-line module that implements the designed control law. This paper describes an evaluation of MOCCA on the Hemlo grinding circuit which comprises one open circuit ball mill and two closed circuit ball mills in series. In this case a 4x4 unconstrained control problem was considered. The manipulated variables included the fresh ore feed rate and three pump box water additions. The controlled variables were the grinding circuit product particle size and three pump box levels. In this application soft constraints were implemented through control action and control error weighting. The feedforward capability of MOCCA was used to compensate for a measured water flow disturbance to one of the pump boxes. MOCCA performed very well during plant evaluations when compared to the original classical multi-loop control strategy and proved to be quite robust. Perhaps most importantly, the process engineers and plant operators have a high level of comfort both in understanding MOCCA's general operating principles, and with its demonstrated performance.

The King-Beaver mine of Asbestos Corporation Limited operates an open pit in the city of Thetford Mines, Quebec. The approximate loca-tion of the open pit is at Latitude 46° 02' North and Longitude 71° 20' West. The general topography is 1020 feet above sea level. Thirty-six percent of the company's scheduled asbestos ore production, for the Thetford Mines area, comes from the King-Beaver pit. The pit operates 24 hours a day, six days a week. Normal production is 10,500 tons of ore per day at a waste to ore ratio of 2 to 1. The remaining ore requirements are mined from the King-Beaver underground mine and the British-Canadian mine.

INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m.
