As the latest plant on a large scale, the new Bessemer works of the North Chicago Rolling Mill Company, at South Chicago, presents some features of interest to steel-makers, I have ventured to lay before the Institute a short description of that plant, and some* remarks upon the practice there. At the time the South Chicago works were designed the adoption of the basic process in this country seemed imminent. Experience in Europe had demonstrated the perfect success of the process technically, and the question of its commercial value was one which, for any particular works, would have to be settled by its special advantages for procuring the necessary ores and basic materials. Under the circumstances, it was thought best at South Chicago to so arrange the plant as to allow the introdnction of the basic whenever it became advisable, and to make such other changes from the standard type of Bessemer plant as the state of the art seemed to demand and to foreshadow. As the use of metal direct from the blast furnace, while generally condemned by experts here, was in such successful practice in Europe (particularly in connection with the basic process), there was no doubt about its feasibility, while its economy in fuel and labor made it especially attractive to the Western manufacturer. It was accordingly decided to build a direct-metal plant adapted to the basic process. The ingots made were to be rolled into rails at one heat, and were to be of such size (12 inches square and long enough for three and four rails) as to be readily and quickly handled by the rolling machinery proposed. This small size of ingots, and the large number cast from each heat of 10 tons, made it necessary to provide a good deal of room in the casting-pit—much more than in any previons plant—and to put down extra facilities for handling ingots. To meet the delays incident to the basic process—to insure that one vessel should be always blowing if necessary, and to provide opportunity for current repairs to linings, etc.—it was decided that three vessels should be used, and, to properly concentrate the work of

The Cactus Springs Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) study area (No. A5188) comprises 12,800 net acres (5,180 ha) in San Bernardino National Forest in west central Riverside County, California, about 20 air miles (32 km) southeast of Palm Springs. Mineral investigations are made by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on National Forest lands identified as Further Planning Areas in the RARE II program. The Bureau of Mines reviewed literature, mining claim records, and production files; examined the study area; and mapped and sampled mineral properties where appropriate.

Progressive mine management is placing increased emphasis on improved ventilation as a contribution to better safety , health , and productivity of miners . Management is on the alert for means of bettering the working environment by increasing the flow of air and distributing it more effectively to the working places , having in mind the necessity of avoiding exorbitant ventilation costs . A basic need in planning betterments of this kind is knowledge of existing rates of flow and air pressures , infCoorrmmaattiicon that is supplied through ventilation surveys . Some companies make partial surveys from time to time , but few make complete surveys on a routine basis . This report describes the practice of a large British anthracite -mining company , which operates 24 collieries in South Wales , in carrying out a routine program of ventilation surveying . Ventilation characteristics and climatic conditions in the working places of its collieries are determined at frequent intervals with a view to increasing the effectiveness of ventilation and protecting the health of workers . It is thought that many of the points of the procedure used in making the surveys and in compiling and reporting the results will be applicable to American practice and that a discussion of the program may be helpful to colliery managers who are planning similar work .

Cameco Corporation operates the high-grade 140 tpd fly-in/fly-out underground McArthur River Uranium Mine in Northern Saskatchewan in a joint venture with Cogema Resources Inc. Reserve grade is in excess of 20 per cent U3O8 with current mining grade averaging 16 per cent U3O8. Due to the high radiation potential of the ore, the non-entry mining method of raiseboring was chosen to minimise worker radiation exposure potential. The raisebore and extraction horizons are located in waste rock with the orebody located between horizons. Ore produced by raiseboring is delivered by LHD to an underground SAG mill and is then hydraulically hoisted to surface receiving facilities after underground thickening to 50 per cent solids by weight. Concrete backfilling is utilised. The orebodies at McArthur River are adjacent to water bearing sandstone. Ground freezing is therefore employed to isolate the ore from this water bearing ground. Calcium chloride brine at -35¦C is circulated through a series of cased boreholes to establish freeze walls up to 25 metres in thickness. At 18 000 000 lb of low cost U3O8 production per annum, McArthur River ranks as the worldsÆ largest uranium mine. Over 50 per cent of the workforce resides in this sparsely populated area of Canada with approximately 40 per cent being of aboriginal ancestry. Site operations must cater for winter temperatures as low as -50¦C.

This paper discusses the technical and cost benefits of alternative data collection techniques used to collect lithological information, obtain laboratory testing samples and perform in situ testing. A comparison between diamond coring and sonic coring techniques is made using data from a recent geotechnical investigation for a final pit slope cut-back. The impacts of the coring method on laboratory strength testing results, material character testing and, ultimately, the mass strength parameters and subsequent slope design adopted are compared. The sonic coring method was chosen out of necessity and enabled the collection of tube samples of a clay unit of interest as well as bulk samples for material character and geochemical testing. The sonic coring generated unexpected degradation of clastic units, while cohesive clay-dominated units were recovered well. The likelihood that disturbance due to the coring method would result in lower than expected triaxial strength results was recognised ahead of time, with surplus samples collected and single-stage triaxial strength testing undertaken. This testing compared favourably with historic three-stage testing, where sample degradation occurred during the later stages. Material character testing of fine-grained, clay-dominated units was comparable with historic diamond core testing, while grain size estimates for more clastic units tended to be finer than previous results. The use of sonic coring over non-cored methods enabled the collection of material texture data, geotechnical properties and a full suite of geochemical analyses. This provided a comprehensive understanding of the lithological and geotechnical character of the rock and soil mass. A high-confidence geotechnical model was developed. The end result was the development of a slope design that was more aggressive than was previously designed (5° steeper inter-ramp angle), which has proven to be appropriate to the conditions following excavation. "Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.1 Mt/a (4.5 million stpy) of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this article and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning, and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution.Project overviewPeña Colorada is a mining company that produces about 30 percent of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in Fig. 1. Technological innovationsMost mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore.” Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that improved many aspects of the mine plan. The Peña Colorada block model has undergone 3 expansions to reflect additional information not available in the past. The model has expanded to the East and Southwest. The latest model expansion increased the total number of benches to 98 as a result of positive exploration results. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. Two sectional block model views in Hexagon Mining’s MineSight 3D, along with the pit designs and geologic solids are shown in Fig. 2."

The time frame will vary depending on whether an environmental assessment (EA) or an environmental impact statement (EIS) will be completed Completing properly designed baseline studies to collect natural resource data to support the EA or EIS prior to the start of the NEPA process can shorten this time frame. In this paper, a two-year natural resource baseline study by Homestake Mining for the Ruby Hill Mine, Eureka County, NV, is used as a case study to describe how a properly designed and executed natural resource baseline study streamlined the NEPA process.

TEXTBOOKS on fire assaying list the following standard methods of assaying sulphide ores: (1) scorification, (2) litharge-niter, (3) soda-iron, (4) roasting, (5) combination wet and fire. The litharge-niter method has proved the most satisfactory, and is the usual method for assaying sulphide ores and concentrates. It gives good results when suitably conducted and when lead buttons of uniform size are produced so that the cupellation temperature can be properly controlled. The main objection to the method is the inconvenience of determining the amount of niter to add to each assay charge to produce lead buttons of suitable size from a set of fusions. For the assay of different materials, the niter requirement varies with the particular sulphide minerals present, the amount of sulphide minerals present, the slag composition, and the rate of heating the charge in the furnace. Except for some materials, so uniform in composition that the same amount of niter can be used in assaying all samples, the amount of niter must be determined for each sample to be assayed. This is done by either: (1) calculation from an estimate of the kind and amount of sul-phide minerals present in the sample, or (2) a preliminary fusion. Some assayers use one method and some the other. The estimation method takes the least time; but much experience is required to obtain close estimates on a wide variety of materials. At best, the sizes of the lead buttons obtained vary considerably. The preliminary fusion method usually gives lead buttons of fairly uniform size, although sometimes there is a variation because the oxidizing power of niter varies a little with the charge. This variation can be eliminated by two preliminary fusions: one to determine the reducing power of the ore, and the other to determine the oxidizing power of niter in the charge. The objection to the prelimi-nary fusion is the extra time and expense involved.

Simulated weathering tests are used to estimate leachate quality of rocks containing varying concentrations of pyrite and carbonates at mines. This study reports the inter-laboratory results from the third phase of a three part effort to develop a standardized, reproducible simulated weathering test for coal mine overburden. Initial development in phases I and II included evaluation of different test apparatus, effects of particle size, gas composition, leaching frequency and other variables. Phases I and II results are reported by Brady et al (2004) and Hornberger et al (2004). In Phase III, a standard column leaching protocol was used by eight commercial, government and university labs to test five rocks of different lithology, pyrite and carbonate content. Ideally, a simulated weathering test should have three characteristics to be useful in mine drainage studies. These include the capability to produce repeatable results, accuracy in simulating field conditions, and a concise test protocol of weeks to a few months. Simulated weathering, or kinetic testing, produces an effluent that simulates mine drainage composition. This can be beneficial for predicting mine drainage quality in comparison to whole rock analyses. The effluent may be tested for the same water quality parameters as the drainage produced during mining, such as pH, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum or other parameters. If the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the kinetic tests are representative of those found in the mine environment, leachate composition may be used to estimate the water quality parameter concentrations produced during mining. Hornberger and Brady (1998), and Geidel et al (2000), compiled comprehensive chapters on kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction. These sources included: (1) a chronology and synopsis of scientific literature on these kinetic tests as they have developed over approximately 50 years, (2) discussion of the influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes, and (3) general guidelines for test procedures, data interpretation, and recommendations for further research to develop standard methods. Most of the kinetic test methods in use today were substantially developed and applied more than 40 or 50 years ago, including leaching columns (Braley, 1949), humidity cells (Hanna and Brant, 1962), Soxhlet reactors (Pedro, 1961), and field scale tests (Glover and Kenyon, 1962). . The most commonly used kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction are leaching columns and humidity cells. While these kinetic test methods and others have been used in hundreds of mine drainage studies as shown in Hornberger and Brady (1998) and other references (e.g. Sorini, 1997), they have rarely been used in coal mine permitting by either regulatory agencies or the mining industry. The major impediment to routine use of kinetic test methods is the variation in the design and operation of these kinetic tests, and lack of a standardized, accepted (e.g. by EPA or ASTM) test method. Interpretation and data comparison from different studies can be difficult. METHODS Five rocks of varying lithology, mineralogy, carbonate and pyrite content were collected in bulk from Pennsylvanian age coal measures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Mineralogical composition of the samples was characterized in detail by Hammerstrom et al (in press) using optical, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe methods. Acid Base Accounting (Sobek et al 1978; Skousen et al, 1997, Kania, 1998) was performed on bulk samples for % total sulfur (%S) as a measure of pyrite and potential acid generation, and Neutralization Potential (NP) as an index of carbonate content. A modified NP test, following the procedure suggested by Skousen et al, 1997 was also conducted for four of the five samples. The modified NP test accounts for initial acid consumption, Fe oxidation, and subsequent Fe hydrolysis by the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Siderite, even though it is a carbonate gives zero net alkalinity. Lithologic, Acid Base Accounting and general mineral composition data for the five rocks are shown in table 1 (see Appendix). Whole rock elemental analysis for major and trace elements was conducted on a sub-sample of each rock type. One laboratory was contracted to mix, homogenize, and size the bulk samples and prepare sub-samples for all the participating labs. Splits were sent to eight labs, and each organization was provided a detailed set of instructions for column assembly and leaching procedure. The protocol was developed based on results from phases 1and 2 of this study. The principal features of the column assembly are: a specific composition of particle size by weight (table 2), weekly leaching cycles, and incubation under humidified air containing 10% CO2. Figure 1 shows the column construction. [ ] The particle size distribution of the crushed rock sample is largely an artifact of the crushing process, rather than a natural systems process like the particle size distribution of a soil or an unconsolidated sedimentary deposit. The standardized particle size distribution, shown in Table 2, promotes operational consistency of the weathering test procedure, and provides better control over reaction kinetics. Large amounts of fine particles within specific zones of the leaching columns have been found to impede uniform fluid flow and/or gas flow (Hornberger and Brady, 1998). Regarding reaction kinetics, the importance of surface area to volume ratios has been described in a previous phase of this study (Brady et al., 2004), and significant differences in crushed particle size distributions and effective surface areas were found among the lithologic units. In this paper, in order to solve the problems of low accuracy and slow speed of fire flame recognition, an extreme learning machine (ELM) method based on improved Harris hawks optimization (IHHO) is proposed for fire flame recognition. A novel Harris hawks optimization (HHO) is used to solve the problem of parameter selection of ELM. In order to solve the problem that the original HHO is prone to fall into local optimum, firstly circle mapping is used to initialize the population to solve the problem of uneven distribution and small range of the initial population. Then the formula of escaping energy of HHO is modified to make the population have a large range in the middle and late iterations while gradually decreasing in the whole iteration process. Thus, the exploitation stage in HHO is improved to make the search range smaller near the optimal solution to accelerate the convergence process. Finally, at the end of each iteration, a certain number of individuals are selected to perform Gaussian and Cauchy hybrid mutation to prevent the IHHO from falling into local optimization. Through three groups of experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed IHHO and IHHO-ELM is verified. In experiment 1, the convergence performance of IHHO is significantly better than that of the other remaining algorithms in the test results of six benchmark functions. In experiments 2 and 3 of real fire flame recognition case, IHHO-ELM outperforms other remaining algorithms on the whole and has significant advantages in some indexes.

A brief outline of production methods and processes is given to show how maintenance fits into the picture at this plant. The work force, and the tools needed to carry out this function, are then described. Preventive maintenance practices, scheduled annual shutdowns and routine check-downs are explained, especially as related to planning and to the materials and labour involved for a mini-mum downtime. A brief explanation of the materials, sup-plies and spare parts program, as well as the part played by the Stores Department in conjunction with the Maintenance Department, is given. Cost control and equipment expenditure indicators are explained. Some specific examples of maintenance jobs are described in order to show the flexibility of the program. S HERRITT GORDON Mines Limited has been in continuous production, except for the planned downtimes needed for expansion tie-ins, or the annual shutdown check-over periods, since the first shipment of nickel on a commercial basis in July of 1954.

Vast amount of fly ash, bottom ash and slags, are produced each year due to coal combustion in thermal power plants. These products consist of mainly unburned carbon and inorganic compound (such as: silica, alumina, iron oxides, magnesium oxide, phosphorus oxide etc.). These are valuable minerals and can be recycled or recovered if properly processed. One third of the material find application as an ingredient in cement and other construction products, the rest is held in dams or similar dumps, which results in a hazardous impact on the environment, polluting soil and ground water. The unproductive use of land, the associated long term financial burden maintenance and negative environmental impacts have led to realization that alternative uses for combustion by-products as a value added product beyond incorporation in construction materials are needed. At present, there is an intensive search to increase their uses. Other uses of coal combustion residues include as raw material in brick and ceramic tile fabrication, as filler in plastics and paints, extraction of valuable mineral materials, production of zeolites and soil and mine waste treatments. Separation of unburned carbon from bottom ashes by means of flotation was conducted in order to increase the possibility of the recycling of coal combustion wastes. In the flotation experiments collector, dispersant and frother amount, pulp density and pH were tested as variables. After first stage flotation experiments, at optimum conditions, the carbon content was reduced down to 5.58 % in the tailings fraction. This fraction meets the industrial specifications and can be utilized as a cement additive. At the same conditions the carbon content of the concentrate increased to 44.72 % at a carbon recovery of 65.81 %. After the cleaner stage flotation experiment the carbon content of the product is enhanced to 62.53 %. This fraction can be blended back into the coal feed to the power plant boilers.

"Comex has carried out an extensive research work related to optimising sensor based sorting systems. The main target was to achieve efficient separation and maintain high capacity of the process. Eventually, the operating cost of the sorting process was investigated in terms of potential industrial applications and possible replacement of the existing traditional processing equipment. The study included an influence of the following factors on the separation efficiency: capacity, particle size and distribution, particle shape, material properties like colour, density and composition, as well as percentage of the rejected fraction. The above factors were also considered in the calculation models for the operating cost of the sorting process. In addition, other elements were considered like compressed air cost, cost of energy, labour cost, and necessary service and maintenance cost. All these elements were implemented into the calculation model allowing quick and effective evaluation of the major parameters for sorting applications. Finally, the study was carried out for two popular sorting principles: visible light sorting utilising differences in color, texture and shape and X-ray sorting using differences in density and chemical composition. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT SORTING POSSIBILITIES Application of the sensor based sorting systems, without any doubt, brings a lot of possible advantages in many mineral operations. The main advantage of the new system is related to its universality and at the same time very sophisticated image processing functions, which can be carried out in the same processing unit (Kolacz, 2014). Figure 1 shows the CXR-1000 system from Comex with 1 m belt width, in the configuration where many different analysed parameters can be used to provide particle separation. The image analysis system includes a camera installed either over the transport belt conveyor or at its discharge end. The system includes the X-ray attenuation analysis realized by the XRT system in the central part of the conveyor belt. The sorting system can be used with both optical and XRT analysis or separately depending on an application."

Over the years since 1956 when initial experiments were conducted on underground concreting in an attempt to cope with the ground weight and pressure encountered in the development of a large-scale underground block caving system, the use of monolithic concrete linings has grown to include most of the primary development in the mining area. Although the development cost of concrete linings is higher than either timber or steel-supported openings, the repair and maintenance costs are substantially lower, making concrete the most economical means of ground support. Other ad- vantages are also apparent, in that concrete provides superior fireproofing, better ventilation, and a safer, cleaner working place.

"A large-scale wildfire had broken out at Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada during May 2016. Many oil sands mining activities were affected due to the wildfire and the associated ash emissions. In particular, ash emission generated from the fire outbreak is a huge problem during the post-fire cleanup. These emissions pose a severe health hazard to workers, environment, and global climate. The ashes emitted into the atmosphere are caused by either human activities or climate conditions. The objective of this research is to assess the effect of three different ash dust suppressants, namely water, #1 surfactants, and #2 polymers at various volumetric concentrations on ashes samples to prevent propagation of fine solid emissions into the atmosphere. It is found that both #1 surfactants solution and #2 polymers solution are effective in retaining fugitive ash dust generated from the ashes. Volumetric concentration efficiency of 0.05% of #1 surfactant and 5% of #2 polymers in 500 ml of water have been proven to provide ash dust retention efficiency greater than 99% after the spraying of these suppressants. It is also found that both #1 surfactants solution and #2 polymers solution maintain an ash dust retention efficiency higher than that of the use of only water. This confirms the merit of using chemical dust suppressants on fugitive ash dust for a longer period, which is proven by the 72-hour data from this experiment. This study gives a general view of how effective chemical suppressants on fugitive ash emissions work. INTRODUCTION On May 1st, 2016, a large-scale wildfire gutted Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Many oil sands mining activities were affected due to the wildfire and the associated ash emission. Due to the wildfire, some of the biggest oil sands companies in Fort McMurray such as Royal Dutch Shell and Suncor Energy shut down their oil production, at 255,000 and 350,000 barrels per day respectively [1]. Syncrude Canada Ltd scaled down its normal production capacity level of 350,000 barrels per day [1]. This generated an estimated loss of about 1.1 million barrels of oil production per day, constituting a 30% reduction in the Canadian daily oil production, crippling the economy [2]. This loss in production by the companies translated into 0.33 % of the Alberta GDP in 2016 constituting a loss of $985 million and 0.06 % of the entire Canadian economy [3]. In 2017, it is estimated that the rebuilding and reclamation of the affected areas in Fort McMurray will add $ 1.3 billion in GDP to Alberta’s economy [3]. A population of over 90,000 people was evacuated from the location and its surroundings for health and safety reasons [4]. The fire destroyed about 2,400 structures and over 500,000 hectares of forest vegetation in Fort McMurray, leaving an estimated 232,000 tonne of post-fire ashes [5,6]."

"Antiscalants were evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in gold processing applications. Under severely supersaturated conditions, 100 percent inhibition was achieved with 30 ppm antiscalant. Laboratory and field testing established that an antiscalant could both inhibit scale buildup and remove an estimated 0.5 kg/m2 per annum of pre-existing scale. A program was developed to control CaCO3 at a gold mill experiencing severe scale buildup. Annual accumulation of as much as 3 cm of scale in process piping was reduced to unmeasureable levels when 10 ppm antiscalant was applied. No scale-related upsets in mill operation occurred during a five-month trial period.INTRODUCTION Inorganic mineral scale is a crystalline deposit that forms when dissolved mineral constituents exceed the solubility of the respective mineral phase. Formation of mineral scale adversely affects a wide range of industries and is of particular interest in mining and metals processing. Scale affects numerous stages of metal extraction processes. Restricted flow in piping, nozzles, valves, screens, pumps and other components used to transport mineral slurries, metal concentrates, and tailings as well as scale in millwater and thickener overflow circuits are primary concerns (Alfano & Boffardi, 1994). Heap leaching, comminuation, flotation, vat leaching, carbon adsorption, and heat exchangers as well as oxidation steps used in processing sulfidic ores are among key unit operations that may be adversely affected (Simmons & Gathje, 2003). Antiscalant chemicals are designed to prevent formation and growth of mineral scales such as CaCO3. These chemicals, which include two primary classes – phosphonates and anionic carboxylate polymers and copolymers - are added to the gold processing stream at low parts-per-million (ppm) concentrations to interfere with nucleation and growth of scale forming crystals and to disperse fine particulate material. Application points may be located throughout the gold extraction process. Evaluation of the performance of antiscalants plays a critical role in determining the best product for a specific application. Performance evaluations include laboratory testing, pilot scale studies, in-plant trials, and ongoing performance monitoring during mill operation."

"Froth structure and stability are known to play an important role in determining flotation recovery and selectivity. An industrial sampling campaign was performed to develop a clearer understanding of the effect of flotation variables on froth stability and the role played by the resulting stability on flotation performance.Froth stability was estimated as the fraction of bubbles bursting on the surface of the froth through image analysis and the solids loading on the bubbles at the top surface. It was generally found that high air flowrates resulted in a drop of froth stability showed by a drop in the fraction of air overflowing and a decrease in the solids loading and simultaneously produced low copper recoveries and low concentrate grades. Deep froths only allowed a small fraction of air to overflow and consequently produced low recoveries. An increase from a standard to high frother dosage did not result in a larger fraction of air overflowing, hence producing low recoveries. Likewise, low frother addition only allows low recoveries because the resulting unstable froth cannot support itself. Low aeration was found to be preferential as it allowed high particle loading, therefore high bubble stabilisation, and low gangue entrainment, resulting in the highest flotation performance.Additional laboratory tests were performed to introduce a new stability parameter and to give a clearer understanding of the effect of flotation variables on froth stability. The results confirmed some of the observations made on the plant."

The property of the lava Cap Gold: Mining Corporation is in the Nevada City-Grass Valley mining district about 5 miles east of Crass Valley, Calif. At present (July 1940) the plant is mining end milling about 390 tons of gold-silver ore a day; about 310 men are employed. This paper describes the mining methods used and presents mining costs for 1939, when 60,704 tons were mined by cut-and-fill stoping and 55,676 tons by square-setting.

"To perform a probabilistic risk assessment (PRA), a method of quantifying the risks associated withinfrequent high consequence events, consequence models that generate representative estimates of human health consequences for a wide variety of representative scenarios are commonly used. Criteria that suitable models must possess include: (1) input requirements necessary to generate large volumes ofprobabilistic simulations; (2) the capability to output injuries with the necessary details and resolution;(3) the ability to capture the variety of different scenarios inherent in an assessment; (4) acceptable cost and computational requirements; and (5) sufficient stakeholder buy-in for community acceptance."
