In the first Report of Investigations of the present series?(No. 4562) the usual course of progress ill reducing the minerals of low-grade ores to their valuable metallic components had been noted as advancing along two lines to concentrate a usually diminishing percentage of these minerals to a smaller bulk of richer product, and then to smelt the smaller bulk more cheaply per pound of metal produced. Fundamental properties of lead compounds made it difficult to treat much richer lead products than are treated at present in several steps of conventional lead smelting, unless ?marked modifications were made. No limits to the richness of the feed itself' were set by the ore (Scotch) hearth; on the contrary, the richer the feed, the better the results given by the hearth. The natural field of operation of the hearth, as determined by the ores available, was seen to lie in the Central United States, with their lead concentrates containing negligible quantities of precious metals and. with few ores of such metals available for use as fluxes. It was noted) however, that even in its chosen field, the Scotch hearth, or "ore" hearths developed from them, was not always used; the usual smelting practice was followed, at times, of sintering followed by blast-furnace smelting for even rich ores.

This session has been organized to suggest to you that the development of direct reduction is important to the iron ore mining and coal mining industries. The papers presented this morning will include a discussion of the costs of making direct reduced iron (DRI), the iron ore and coal supplies needed to produce DRI, the financing of direct reduction (DR) projects and, probably most important, the impact of the DR development on the iron ore and coal industries. For starters, this opening presentation offers a brief statement about DR practice and DRI, under the title that should surprise no one: "Direct Reduction: What Is It?" There is always the chance? that a brief statement may become long and complicated. But, by mixing some slides borrowed from Hal Lownie with a larger number of photographs accumulated from other sources, I hope to avoid such pitfalls.

Wyoming contains many petroleum and natural-gas fields, and more than 250 geological structures have been mapped; however, only about 85 have been found (July 1938) to contain petroleum or natural gas, or both, in commercial quantities. To January 1938 approximately 434 million barrels of oil and 915 billion cubic feet of gas have been produced, and it was estimated that proved oil reserves in Wyoming amounted to 300 million barrels.' The Salt Creek field, the largest in the Rocky Mountain area, alone has produced 64 percent of the State's oil and 46 percent of its gas. This field ranked thirteenth among the producing fields of the United States in total cumulative production as of January 1, 1938. On this basis it ranks with the Kern River and Huntington Beach fields of California and the Butler County fields of Kansas. The Salt Creek field has declined in relative importance; in 1937, while still the largest oil-producing field in the State, it produced 31 percent of the oil and 11 percent of the gas extracted from all wells in Wyoming.

This report investigated the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) phenomenon in magnesium alloy AZ31 billets to understand the deformation mechanisms and microstructure evolution during extrusion and other metal forming processes, Compression tests of coarse-grained as-cast magnesium alloy billets containing lamellar Mg17Al12 eutectic phase and (Al, Mn) particles suggest that temperatures higher than 300°C, strains greater than 0,25 and strain rates above 0,l/s lead to the formation of fine DRX grains in the deformed samples. Microstructural observations also indicate particle-stimulated DRX nucleation (PSN) during hot deformation of the AZ31 alloy, facilitated by the presence of Mg17Al12 and (Al, Mn) particles, While the Mg17Al12 is dissolved into the matrix at about 350°C, (Al, Mn) particles may remain effective for PSN at temperatures up to at least 400°C, This study suggests that alloy design with a proper distribution of second-phase particles can provide the desired microstructure for improved properties and formability in wrought magnesium alloys.

The majority of individuals involved in the mining industry can appreciate and under-stand that mining is an activity that is necessary to satisfy the very basic needs of society, and to assist in accommodating our ever-changing world. As the expression goes, ?if it can?t be grown, it has to be mined.? And at this point in time, society has granted the mining industry the right to go about the business of mining, with the general anticipation that the work will be carried out without causing undue harm to the environment or populations in and around the mining operation. The term ?sustainable development? is gaining momentum as a popular concept, and indeed it has become something of a catch-all phrase, but it is important that the idea behind the term is not cast aside as a nonsense buzz word, as it simply is an indication that development (e.g. mining) can be satisfactorily carried out with an eye toward stewardship of the environment and society. On Feb. 19, 2010, a round-table discussion (Roundtable 2010) on ?Strides Toward Sustainability in Mining? was hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. (Knight Piésold) at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV. Knight Piésold had local representatives (Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce), as well as representatives from other office locations (Cynthia Parnow and Rick Damiani from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from Tucson, AZ) to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to 30 attendees from five states. Attendees included personnel from nine mining properties and various corporate offices. The majority of participants were people who are directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Others were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus.

I am honoured to be given the opportunity to share with you my thoughts on what will be the essential characteristics of æThe Mining Company for the 21st CenturyÆ. For me the 21st century is all about globalisation and the challenges and the opportunities that globalisation presents for the mining industry. To play on the global stage the successful mining companies must develop profiles that are global in: their operations diversity, their partnership relationships diversity, their customer relationships diversity, their workforce diversity, and their shareholder diversity. In my view æbigÆ will count in the 21st century, but big overlaid with quality: quality assets, quality people, quality partners, quality customer relationships, and quality image and reputation. Last year, Rio TintoÆs Leon Davis said when he addressed the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs annual conference that Australian resource companies that wish to become global operators must develop an unequivocal international identity that will make that company a known and trusted quality wherever it seeks to do business. He went on to say that structuring and operating a business in a way that consistently manifests the qualities that inspire respect and evoke confidence is vital. I absolutely concur with what Leon said. Unfortunately, the fact is that, as we stand at the beginning of the 21st century, our industry and many of our companies are no better accepted by the world community than was the case five, ten, 15 or even 20 years ago. In fact, in some cases, the warmth of the acceptance may have subsided. To some extent the demonstrations that we saw recently in Seattle and Davos reflect a growing distrust, disquiet and cynicism in our communities. Here, however, I see an opportunity. While on the one hand the mood of disquiet presents many challenges, it also provides those of us who are willing to get out on the front foot in addressing the issues, and engaging in the dialogue, with a very significant opportunity to create a major competitive advantage. It provides the opportunity to earn respect and the opportunity to develop a reputation as a company that is sought as a joint venture partner and a company that is welcomed by governments and communities. Importantly, also, people will seek employment with such a company and will invest in such a company. The challenge is to change the way we behave and the way we are perceived by all the key stakeholders. Many of our industryÆs traditional skills are now commodities à many can be à and are out-sourced. The new critical skill for the 21st century à the real competitive advantage à will come from creating a real and genuine understanding of our role and what we stand for. Everything we do should demonstrate not only sound business principles, but also an understanding of the political, social, cultural and environmental impacts of our activities - at an international and a local level. This concept isnÆt new - but for large companies such as BHP, where we operate in more than 20 countries with diverse cultures, languages and religions - it requires enormous energy and dedication. It is complex. It is difficult. But I believe it is absolutely fundamental to our future.

Mineral resource development activities impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers, to families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of corporate social responsibility life-of-mine planning considers that mining activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way for the entire life of the mine (ie from exploration to decommissioning and closure). In this context, the health impacts of mining extend throughout the life of the community from worker injury and chronic exposure to communicable and non-communicable causes of illness, through to family and community health and well-being. At the inaugural Life-of-Mine conference in July 2012, the authors proposed the life-of-mine in the life-of-community (LOMLOC) matrix as a framework for understanding issues at the interface between resource extraction operations and the surrounding environment.This paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining companies with American operations in Canada, Colombia and Brazil. These corporate approaches to public health management are mapped to the LOMLOC matrix to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous .sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Worldwide production of natural zeolites during 2001 was estimated to be about 3.5 Mt (3.85million st). Construction and agriculture continued to be the major consumers. Estimated production in North America during 2001, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, was about 40 kt (44,000 st). In the United States and Canada, the zeolitic tuffs are ground, extruded or modified for use as adsorbents, desiccants, ion-exchange media and carriers. In Mexico and the rest of the world, the zeolitic tuffs are cut into dimension stone that is used in construction. Zeolitic tuffs are usually composed of the minerals clinoptilolite, mordenite or both. They occur in a variety of colors and are easy to cut and shape. And they have low thermal conductivity. This construction application is classified with dimension stone rather than with chemical and agricultural uses.

Although, for about a half-century the percentage of coal production provided through strip mining has steadily increased, recent trends indicate that a peak in percentage (not tonnage) is being approached, principally because of the decline in economic adrantage enjoyed by strip mining compared to underground mining. Factors contributing to the decline are the decrease in the margin of advantage in manpower requirements held by strip mining; an increase in depth and volume of overhurden, requiring larger equipment and capital investment; increasing lack of reserve land blocks large enough to support extensive strip mining operations; more stringent legislation for reclamation of stripped land, with increasingly higher costs of such reclamation; and the increasing costs of land surface rights for strip mining. Already there has been a peak and suhsequent decline in relative importance of strip mining insome major Eastern coal-producing states; trends indicate that a peaking for the whole Eastern region is on the way. Although, in the West the pressures are less severe, they will, nevertheless, reduce to an increasing degree the advantage that strip mining has possessed. For about half a century, strip mining has been providing an ever-increasing share of total coal output in the United States, and in the past 30 years this share has grown from less than 8% to 33.7%, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 also shows that strip mining is gaining faster in the West than in the East. From 1961 to 1967, output from strip mines grew 63.6 million toqs, or 52.2%. Certainly there is nothing in such performance to indicate any peaking in the level of strip coal-mine production. But the fact is that, if not in actual tonnage, strip mining appears to be reaching its peak in relative importance, at least east of the Mississippi River. And the area east of the Mississippi provides 90.0% of the strip and 94.9% of the total coal production of the nation. The relative economic advantage which spurred strip mining's growth for a third of a century has been diminishing markedly in recent years. Fig. 2 shows evidence of this decline. From 1947 until 1961, strip tonnage output remained fairly stable, at the end of the period showing only a 12.5% decline. Meanwhile, underground coal production fell 44.5%. As the result of the greater decline in underground coal, strip coal in 1961 furnished 30.3% of the total coal produced, compared to only 22.1% in 1947. In the succeeding six years, however, underground coal output increased by 76.5 million tons, while strip output increased only 63.6 million. Further evidence of the strengthening of underground coal's relative position — or if you will, the weakening of strip coal's position — can be found in the major coal stripping states: Illinois, West Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and West Virginia, which in 1966 provided 80% of the nation's strip coal. Fig. 3 shows what has been happening in three states lying in the Appalachian field and in the total output of these three states. In the figure, the column height represents the output of coal mined by all methods. The number at the base of each column is the percentage mined by stripping. In Pennsylvania and Ohio, the percentage of strip mining increased between 1956 and 1961, but by 1966 had declined from the 1961 level. In West Virginia, a decline occurred during the first five years but was followed by a rise. In January 1968, Coal Age published an article listing the locations and capacities of new large mines in the planning and construction stages that would be operating by 1968-1971. Recent completion of Cyprus Bagdad's $240-million modernization and expansion program has registered a 700% increase in ore production with only a 50% increase in labor. Elements of this remarkable achievement include the application of large-scale mining equipment as well as the selection of the latest in processing hardware. Most important, however, was the early recognition that Bagdad's labor personnel is its most important asset.

"In this paper a review of the current status in recycling technologies for cathode ray tubes is given for both the glass and phosphors. Particular emphasis is placed on the opportunities for the recovery of the rare earth elements (REE) from the phosphor coatings. This is placed in the market context of alternative virgin sources and some of the advantages and disadvantages for REE waste recovery. Future opportunities are explored and also some experimental detail on a low cost leach system is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe disposal of cathode ray tube (CRT) based colour televisions has accelerated world-wide with the development of high definition flat screen panels. The total number of colour CRT televisions that have been sold in the United States in the mid-20th century is estimated to have been over 2 billion (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2007), with high current rates of disposal. It is estimated that of the 20 million televisions annually discarded, 78% are send to landfill (Nnorom, Osibanjo & Ogwuegbu, 2011). However, this easily accessible item of electronics cannot only be turned into a valuable resource using the right recovery procedures, it can also prevent the substantial environmental contamination arising from improper disposal. In this review we focus on previous and current work performed on the recycling of CRT based televisions. Due to the increasing demand for rare earth metals, the main focus will be on the possibilities and challenges of recycling the fluorescent phosphor powders on the CRT’s panel glass.CATHODE RAY TUBE’S GLASS RECYCLINGConventional cathode ray tubes consist of three main parts, the panel, the funnel and the neck (Figure 1). To produce the different colours on the screen, the inside of the panel is coated with a matrix of hundreds of thousands of small phosphor dots. Each dot is one of three types of coloured phosphors, emitting either red, green or blue light. These emit light when excited by a beam of electrons generated by electron guns located in the neck of the CRT. These beams pass through holes in the shadow mask and excite the phosphor coating on the inside of the panel, to give light of variable RGB composition, see Figure 1."

"The mineral raw materials industry is a key-component of the Gross Domestic Product of industrialised economies, closely related to both the building and the industrial sectors. Despite this, at local level mining and quarrying are associated with both irreversible environmental damage and several visual alterations affecting the natural landscape. In this sense, SIA (Social Impact Assessment) has become a strategic tool that can not only improve the prediction but also the assessment of the social impact by involving the local communities in a participatory process. Taking into account the SIA experience, together with the examination of some relevant international case studies, it is possible to draw up a list of good practices for mining project management, from exploration through to closure and beyond, with quarry restoration. Such good practices will complement the existing studies, focusing on environmental issues, with the social issues arisen considered in SIA application."

Magma Metals Company operates an Outokumpu Flash Furnace, four Peirce-Smith Converters and two Anode Casting Wheels supported by six Anode Vessels. Process gasses from the Flash Furnace and Converters are treated in a two train/double contact sulfuric acid plant. Sulfur capture for the smelter is +98%. The new flash furnace was commissioned on July 7, 1988 and has processed over three million tons of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. Magma has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. This paper describes all the procedures, operation control parameters and operating philosophy that has allowed Magma to achieve superior performance.

Ultrafine-grained surface layers were obtained by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) in copper and titanium samples. The thermal properties of the deformed layers were characterized using a scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) that allows thermal conductivity to be mapped down to the submicrometer scale. A theoretical approach, based on this investigation, was used to calculate the heat flow from the probe tip to the sample and then estimate the thermal conductivities at different scanning positions. Experimental results and theoretical calculation demonstrate that SThM can be used as a powerful tool for the thermal property and microstructural analysis of ultrafine-grained microstructures.

Vacutainers are employed by the Bureau of Mines and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration for sampling mine air and other atmospheres containing fixed gases, low-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, and products of combustion. Tests were conducted to study shelf life of evacuated samplers prior to sampling and also to check the stability of sampled gases prior to analysis. An unexplained phenomenon, slow accumulation of carbon monoxide in evacuated samplers, occurred after a few weeks' storage; levels were low but increased with time and could pose a problem for critical applications. Accordingly, attempts to halt CO release by additional means of treatment were made, and storage at low temperature was found to be effective.

Beginning in 1987, miniature dataloggers approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were publicly available for sale. The principal among these was the model CR21XQM, manufactured by Campbell Scientific, Inc. These dataloggers had been tested and were deemed permissible by MSHA and thus could be installed in the return air of an underground coal mine. In 1996, production of all permissible Campbell Scientific dataloggers ceased due to lack of sales. Data collection with these dataloggers has been a staple of ground control research in the United States for decades, and, without them, or a replacement, the capability to monitor ground behavior is severely impacted. Since that time, any party requiring a permissible datalogger has needed to borrow one that was purchased during the production years. In order to fill this technology gap and ensure its own data-gathering capabilities, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed and refined its own miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS). On February 16, 2010, MSHA deemed the MIDAS to be permissible and approved it for use in the return air of an underground coal mine. The MIDAS is an intrinsically safe, 16- or 24-bit datalogger, compatible with a wide range of resistive, single-ended, and differential-type instrumentation. It contains enough data storage memory to operate for over a year with typical data rates and is efficient enough to do this on a single C-sized alkaline battery for that entire period. It is menu-driven and requires no programming knowledge to operate. It supports wireless or hardwired communication for datalogger setup and data download. This paper describes the design, field and laboratory testing, and capabilities of the MIDAS datalogger. While not as fully -functioned as the CR21XQM, it is the only new permissible datalogger available, and there is intent to make it available to the mining industry for purchase.

It is crucial to record ground movement of any magnitude to enable the safe and economical design of excavations and infrastructure. The DigiMine Laboratory is equipped with technologies to record such movements. This paper analyses the effectiveness of the Digital Mine instrumentation in recording earth movements in light of the Botswanan earthquake which occurred on the 3rd of April 2017 at 17:40 UTC. Recordings from the Digital Mine are compared with other ground sensing technologies which also captured the event (USGS and GEOFON systems). USGS and GEOFON system’s recordings suggest that, there are a number of possible mechanisms that could have resulted in the earthquake as discussed in the paper. Compared to the USGS and GEOFON systems, DigiMine system could not provide an analysis that could give possible source mechanisms. However, the system’s success in recording the Botswanan earthquake, is an indication that the system works and can be further developed or improved. For a comprehensive analysis, more data from various sensors needs to be collected. For example, DigiMine connecting to the national seismic monitoring system or to the local mine’s seismic monitoring system. Such connections will enable the development of a better self-analysis system and possibly prediction of future events.
