Through the process of Riverbank Filtration (RBF), the Louisville Water Company plans to obtain a higher quality source of water for their B.E. Payne Water Treatment Plant (WTP) by means of four collector wells located in the alluvial aquifer along the bank of the Ohio River. The collector wells are connected to a 2,850 L/s (65 mgd) pumping station by a 2,362 m (7,750 ft) long, 3 m (10 ft) finished diameter tunnel located in limestone and shale bedrock, which is approximately 45 m (150 ft) below the surface. High tunnel boring machine (TBM) production rates were achieved in this moderately weak bedrock; most of the tunnel only required support in the crown. An unanticipated water-bearing fault and unanticipated ground behavior proved challenging and required quick thinking to minimize impacts to construction. Tunneling conditions are discussed in detail, together with the methods used for overcoming the groundwater and ground behavior challenges. The tunnel is expected to be completed in April 2009.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometer range of 100 nanometres. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles and because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles make it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. DPM is a significant health hazard in underground mining operations, where the use of dieselpowered equipment in confined spaces can lead to high levels of exposure among people working in these environments. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), DPM has been linked to severe health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of lung cancer. Effective management of DPM is essential not only for protecting people’s health but also for ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining operational efficiency, and safeguarding the long-term viability of mining companies.

A comminution circuit is an important integral part of a mineral processing plant. Nearly 40% of the capital cost and 30 to 40% of the operating cost are taken up by the crushing and grinding circuit. Therefore, considerable care should be given to the design and selection of this circuit. Several factors affect the selection of a comminution circuit--energy consumption, avail- ability of the equipment, the remoteness of location, and availability of trained personnel, to mention a few. Each of these factors influences the choice. Selecting a comminution circuit strictly on lower capital cost may not be optimal. Crushing and grinding circuits are usually site specific and should be selected - only after careful analysis of all the factors involved. The objective of this paper is to show the effect of these factors, which are extranious to capital cost. Usually, the capital cost of a semiautogenous grinding circuit is lower than that of an equivalent conventional circuit. However, due to lower equipment availability and high power costs in certain locations, the economic advantage of lower capital cost is lost. Analysis indicates that a break even point occurs at a power cost of 5¢/kWh. This paper describes the procedure utilized for selecting the most economic comminution circuit and states the conditions applicable for each cominution circuit.

"During the design of a typical modern subway, engineering aspects prevail since underground structures remain hidden to most humans. Aligning the advanced architectural concepts with the engineering requirements of the Naples Metro Line 1 (Italy) called for a thorough rethinking of the design process so that the engineering could be kept aligned with the architecture, integrating seamlessly the two with the construction methods, standards and technology.The preliminary design process consisted of three major phases: •,geotechnical and geological issues, preselection of construction methods; •,functional scenario based on engineering and construction requirements; •,review and merging of the architectural concept with the functional and engineering aspects. The last phase proved the most demanding one, matching the first outline sketches with the applicable construction methods. This required continuous alignment of approaches, eventually leading to the design consistent with the original architectural vision, yet fully compliant with the engineering and construction framework. At the beginning general information on Line 1 will be provided, followed by some main features of the construction work along the Dante – Garibaldi section both for the tunnel and the stations. At the end, the selected methodology and the related consequences on the functional, technical and architectural design will be outlined.City of Naples current municipal transportation plan envisages a circle ring line for the metro line M1. Actually it’s open to public the segment Piscinola – Dante – Garibaldi run by AMM, municipal company. This ring segment has been built by Metropolitana di Napoli, while Napoli Metro Engineering (company belonging to MMspa Group) is in charge for the planning of entire system and construction management. Line 1 connects Piscinola-Secondigliano northern periphery to Vomero shopping neighborhood, downtown and Central Railway Station."

This paper examines the interrelationship of conducting full risk assessments in the context of the coal mining industry and under the framework of the Health's Safety in Employment Act 1992. In the context of Occupational Health's Safety, Risk Management is a holistic management process that can be used by individuals working in all organisations and from all industries. The Australian New Zealand Standard 4360: 2004 defines a Risk as being; The chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives. This definition is followed by several notes that include: a risk is often specified in terms of an event or circumstance and the consequences that may flow from it, risk is measured in terms of a combination of the consequences of an event and their likelihood, and risk may have a positive or negative impact. For the purposes of this paper, the above definition will be adopted. This paper examines the newly expanded approach of the fully documented risk management process in the New Zealand coal mining industry. This is done in the context of the coal mining regulations but more importantly by using the framework of the Health & Safety in Employment Act 1992. This legislation under Section 6 requires all employers to, Take all Practicable Steps to prevent harm coming to employees while at work and to others who might be at or in the vicinity of a workplace. When the term 'all practicable steps' is studied, one can clearly see that such steps should be the same steps taken that a prudent and reasonable person would have taken given the same type of circumstance. Due to the fact that in New Zealand parliament made statutes is administered by a Government Department, means that their breaches will be heard before a judge in the District Court. Under the Westminster System of Justice, a basic dictum of that court in matters relating the occupational health and safety is that a breach needs to be satisfied to a specific standard. That standard is, 'Beyond a reasonable Doubt'. One of the primary benefits of adopting a proactive approach to risk management is that if the industry were to adopt similar approaches, then this mythology could be seen as an industry standard. As such, the approach carries the same status in a court of law, as that of an Approved Code of Practice.

THIS question having been repeatedly raised, and particularly revived in a discussion at the last meeting of the Institute, I beg to submit the following remarks, based partly upon personal experience, partly upon the results of large works in Europe, establishing, years ago, the practicability of certain methods, which may therefore be considered to have passed the stage of mere experiment. Before entering upon the merits of one system or the other, it is indispensable to lay down some recognized principles, which ought to serve as guides, in arriving at fair judgments in questions of this character. In a profession like that of mining, locally so much influenced by combinations of circumstances too various to mention, it is difficult to do more than lay down the main features of a system based upon general laws and recognized facts, leaving the details to the sound judgment and experience of the engineer, who, by virtue of his education, ought to be able to make such choice and such modifications in the plans of a mine as the particular case demands. Mineral resources, in some countries the sole property of the owner of the soil, in others controlled by the strong hand of a government, are nevertheless a gift of nature, in which, indirectly, the whole of the human race has as real an interest as the immediate owner himself. I.-THE HISTORY OF THE SYSTEM TO trace the history of the development of the Co-operative Committee System in The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, one must look backward about twenty years. In 1915 and 1916, the first years of the W ar to really affect Canadian life, there were sixteen hundred men working in the Trail plant. These men were, on the whole, a splendid body of men and pa trio tic to the core. They were almost one hundred percent organized, ninety-five percent of them be-longing to the Union of the Western Federation of Miners. Most of the tradesmen belonged to their craft unions as well. For example, there were ? local machinist, steel workers', electrician, boiler maker, bricklayer, and carpenter unions. The Company had always maintained an open-shop policy and refused to enforce membership in any union, but recognized the right of every man to belong to unions. The only exceptions have been the I.W.W. and the One Big Union. Both of these organizations have always been fought by the Company. By 1916, membership in the Western Federation being practically 100 per cent, the Company recognized this organization's authority to make agreements, and a wage and hour agreement was drawn up and signed by the Company and the local officials of the Union, and ratified and signed by the Head Office of the Union in Denver, Colorado. This agreement was for the duration of the war.

The current state of the mass transit industry in America will be examined. How and why this important urban activity shifted entirely, or almost entirely, from the private sector to the public sector. Who pays for transit? For day to day operating costs? For capital investment? The prospects for transit's future will be the next major issue addressed. In a word, they are rather good. Over the past decade there have been major new transit investments made in Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Miami, as well as constant re-investment in such cities as New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. While the current administration has put a temporary halt on the initiation of any major new rail transit projects using Federal funds, there are several mechanisms localities have for using other resources for such projects. These will be explored.

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. Conflict is commonly considered in a two-party sense, but this can deeply over-simplify the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

Color enhances expression and communication in all physical objects experienced in life. Pigments provide color and in some applications have a specific additional function. Natural iron oxides are widely distributed throughout the world but only a few deposits are sufficiently pure and possess acceptable color and brightness properties to merit their processing into pigment form. Ochre, the common name for goethite ore, is the best and most under used material in the buff colored pigment market. The geological occurrence of ochre in the basal Shady Formation of the Cartersville Mining District (Georgia) is described. Exploration, processing, and product applications of New Riverside Ochre Company, Inc. are discussed. An overview of the worldwide pigment market is presented with emphasis placed upon the North American activity in iron oxide production and application. The purpose of this paper is to increase the awareness of ochre and its potential market in the colored iron oxide pigment industry, encourage research on the origin of ochre deposits, and stimulate interest in new applications of this unique substance.

In spite of various corrosion studies on HPDC AZ91, there is no clear indication which microstructure gives the best corrosion performance. The skin with its fine microstructure is sometimes reported to have the best corrosion resistance, but there is no clear definition of the skin. If the skin is the outermost part of the casting and nothing is removed from it, then it is contaminated and the corrosion resistance is low. If the outermost skin is removed (about 25 µm) then a better corrosion resistance can be obtained. However this does not automatically mean that there is no other region in the bulk of the casting which could have a similar or even better corrosion resistance. Indeed, the corrosion measurements including potentiodynamic polarization and long term electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed a lower corrosion resistance of the original as-cast skin about 100 pm thick. The thickness of this region is more or less independent from the thickness of the casting section. The surface region is free from any dendritic grain growth which influences the amount and distribution of the 13-phase and therefore the distribution of the most important alloying element Al. This could explain the different corrosion behavior. Further reason can be found in the enrichment of some impurities such as Fe in the near surface.

"The Line Creek Project is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 25 kilometres north of Sparwood. The design is to produce a total of2.7 million tonnes of coal annually. This is made up of1.4million tonnes of thermal coal and 1.3 million tonnes of metallurgical coal.Construction commenced in the spring of 1980 and mining operations began in July 1981. The thermal processing plant, maintenance and dry facilities, as well as extensive road and bridge construction, were completed in early 1982. A collective agreement was signed with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 115, in June 1981.The first unit train left Line Creek on February 18, 1982 with a load of thermal coal bound for the Ssangyong Corporation in Southern Korea. It was the start of a ten-year contract to supply 350,000 tonnes annually to fire their cement kilns. Additional contracts for 750,000 tonnes will fuel the boilers of Korea Electric Company's San Chon Po and Go-Jeong power stations. Metallurgical coal shipments are scheduled to leave the Roberts Bank port in Vancouver in April 1983.Tracking an introductory presentation given at the 1981 CIM Annual General Meeting in Calgary, this paper highlights the salient developments by which ""The Line Creek Project"" has progressed during the past year to the"" Line Creek Operation"". Line Creek has com e on stream as scheduled and will meet all contractual commitments pertaining to timing, volumes and quality for thermal coal. The first train load left the plant in mid-February, and the first boat load to Korea departed Roberts Bank in mid-April. Metallurgical coal deliveries will commence in April 1983."

Eastern Mesabi taconite is one of the hardest rocks known, but fortunately it shows little tendency to pack in the crushers, when the minus 5/16 inch material is removed. The crushing circuit is essentially as shown in the Engineering and Mining Journal article, "Reserve's New Taconite Project", dated December, 1956 except that the grizzly screen between the two stages of gyratory crushing has been eliminated. The Reserve operating staffs aim is to utilize the crushing equipment in such a manner that the maximum tonnage of taconite can be crushed to the required size at a minimum cost. As is readily apparent, the primary consideration is to produce a desired size product, with the other operating factors to be balanced, thus achieving the best setting for each crusher. Much effort has been expended toward the development of a satisfactory sized material for feeding the rod mills. The characteristics of this feed must allow the following situations to be handled by the existing equipment: 1. The material being fed to the rod mill must be such that it can be fed into the unit with the proper quantity of water to maintain the correct density within the mill. 2. The rod mill must produce a product from this feed which can be handled without difficulty by the magnetic cobbing and ball mill circuit. 3. The incidental tramp must not exceed that quantity which can be handled easily after the rod mill and after the ball mills.

The Bagdad solvent extraction plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird SX-EW plant near Miami, AZ. The current operation still resembles its original form, with four independent sections that run in parallel with each consisting of many long and narrow settlers. Through its 40-year history, the Bagdad SX circuit has experienced a range of pregnant leach solution flows and grades. The unique design of the Bagdad circuit has allowed for numerous configuration changes to accommodate the changing operational conditions, while maintaining an extraction recognized in the industry as excellent.

South Africa (SA), a country in which all three commercially important asbestos minerals have been mined and milled, has retained proven cases of mesothelioma linked with environmental exposure to asbestos. This study illustrates the importance of fiber type in the occurrence of environmental mesothelioma. Four studies have reviewed the source of occupational or environmental asbestos exposure in 504 histologically proven cases of mesothelioma in South Africa. One hundred and eighteen cases (23%) were thought to be related to environmental exposure to asbestos. In the vast majority of these cases, exposure was linked to crocidolite mining activities in the Northern Cape Province. Two cases were thought to have occurred in relation to amosite and Transvaal crocidolite exposure in the Limpopo Province. In the balance of cases there was some uncertainty. No cases were reported with exposure to South African chrysotile. Consequently, in the vast majority of cases of mesothelioma, environmental exposure to asbestos occurred in the Northern Cape Province, in proximity to mines, mills and dumps where crocidolite was processed. Crocidolite appears to be far more mesotheliomagenic than amosite, and chrysotile has not been implicated in the disease. The problem of the crippled soldier in industry is not a problem of war work only; it is a problem of industrial development. As individuals, each one of you is seeking to provide our maimed heroes with such teaching as will render them, in the shortest possible amount of time, productive and satisfied members of the community. As individuals you are interested in the organizations that are preparing to receive these men, to train them and to place them at that work for which they are best fitted. As an organization, it is now your duty to take up the industrial end of the problem, to investigate existing conditions in the industries, to discover where the opportunities for employment lie, and so readjust industrial practice that the cripples may be utilized to their own and the community's good with the least shock to themselves or to the industries, and with the greatest amount of permanent benefit to all concerned. We have divided industrial opportunities suitable for cripples, roughly, into three classes. First, such as already exist in the industries, which can be set aside for cripples only, present occupants being transferred to other work for which they can be fitted but which is not suitable for cripple work; second, opportunities in the industrial world that, through changes in the working equipment or tools, or through appliances attached to the cripple himself, can make the cripple a competitor of the sound worker; third, opportunities not existing at present in the industries, but which could be introduced for the good of the community without placing the cripples into competition with any existing class of workers. As typical of the first type of occupations for cripples, we have mentioned that of store-keeper, of the second type that of typist,2 and of the third type that of dental nurse.3 The last occupation can be so arranged as to take from the overworked dentist the work of cleaning teeth; and

The Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, South Dakota, has been proposed as the host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. The laboratory will house neutrino experiments in mine workings at the 7400-foot depth, as well as research in geomicrobiology, rock mechanics, and ground-water flow. Initial plans for the laboratory were developed in 2000 after Homestake Mining Company announced the closing of the underground gold mine. Homestake’s owner, Barrick Gold Corporation, had agreed to donate the mine for a laboratory if it could be protected from environmental liability. That initial agreement was delayed, and Barrick turned off the mine’s pumps in 2003, allowing lower levels of workings to begin to flood with water. In early 2004, the Governor of South Dakota signed an agreement with Barrick that would indemnify the company and eventually transfer ownership of the mine to a state laboratory authority. South Dakota’s governor also announced plans to ask the state legislature for funds to help in the initial construction of the laboratory. A consortium of scientists from several states is currently preparing a detailed laboratory proposal for the National Science Foundation.
