The 23rd annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Tucson Marriott University Park Hotel, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005. The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is a non-profit organization. It educates the public about the mineral industries and reports outstanding accomplishments in the fields of mining and the earth sciences. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Pierre Lassonde, president of Newmont Mining and resident of the World Gold Council. He is one of Canada’s leading gold analysts.

Acid-Minesite-Solutions (AMS) are defined as copper-containing pit lake, tailing pond, acid-mine-drainage, and heap and waste dump irrigation solutions. All of these solutions are characterized by copper, acid and water contents that have value as individual commodities. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed nano- and hyper-filtration membrane methods for the separation of copper and other base metals, acid and water from AMS. These treatments are collectively called HWPT?s Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) systems. The EMS® method of copper recovery produces small volumes of higher-concentration copper solution from large-volume, copper-dilute AMS. A case study of the 4,000 gpm Cananea EMS®-AMS plant for the recovery of copper from an acid-pit-lake resource is described. The EMS® method of copper removal from AMD and tails pond waters has been bench-scale demonstrated and are described, complete with projected budgetary capital and operating costs. Additional treatments for the recovery of sulfuric acid and high-quality water from the permeate (membrane passing) waters for the above-described AMS treatments are presented, with budgetary capital and operating cost estimates. Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. The roof bolts tested are also used to identify the possible corrosion mechanisms that influenced the bolts’ performance over time. Initially, the most commonly used bolt material in the USA, the ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, was tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal mining environment for approximately 6 months, and the results are discussed. Localized corrosion forms such as crevice and pitting were mainly observed after testing. The stressed and unstressed roof bolts with and without threads that were tested in alkaline coal mine corrosive environment for 6 months passed their load-bearing capacity as per ASTM F432 test standards. From the results, it is concluded that this test protocol could be applicable to test the material performance of different roof bolt metallurgies and coatings with desired modifications to the proposed methodology for the specific underground mine environment. This paper mainly discusses the test system and protocol and shortcomings of the system and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

Since the return of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines to normal peacetime functions following World War II, a coordinated program of oil and gas development and production research has been in prog- ress, and the importance of the problems has been evaluated so that the Bureau can render greater service to the oil and gas industry. Among the problems associated with development and production research, those concerned with efficient utilization of the Nation's reserves of hydro- carbons contained in gas-condensate type reservoirs continue to receive major emphasis. For a number of years an important part of the Bureau's work has been the study of two pressing problems associated with production from such reservoirs; first; an investigation of fluid properties, and the second, finding a means of controlling corrosion. Studies of the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids have resulted in the publication of a number of reports, which cover a broad field. In general they deal with subjects such as the properties of a fluid from a well; development of research equipment, means of combatting corrosion, and the many aspects of gas-condensate engineering. To provide experimental data on relative liquid and gas volumes and critical pressures and temperatures, a windowed cell was constructed that permits ob- servation of the fluid phase while making the tests. Experimentation in the field on the use of inhibitors to control corro- sion of equipment in gas-condensate wells has disclosed that solutions of chromate are effective retardants of corrosion. Engineering field studies of the Carthage and New Hope gas-condensate fields are in progress, and reports on the Sheridan and Lake Creek fields have been completed. De acuerdo a este estudio, entre todos los procesos metalúrgicos utilizados para la recuperación de la plata como la tostación sulfatante, amalgamación, flotación, se encontró que la cianuración es un proceso completo ya que puede reemplazar a las anteriores, con excepción de la amalgamación de plata nativa y otras deficiencias. En consecuencia, la cianuración es el método hidrometalúrgico que aprovecha mejor el poder lixiviante de los cianuros alcalinos en soluciones diluídas y extrae la palta de los relaves. As mines get deeper, the critical underground temperature limits will be exceeded, and an increasing number of mines will need to implement, expand or modify cooling systems. Surface cooling plants have many advantages over underground cooling such as efficient heat rejection, and lower relative capital cost; however the delivery of cooling through long underground distances can result in lost refrigeration capacity before the chilled air reaches the areas it is needed most. Refrigeration plants are therefore often overdesigned in size and capacity to compensate for underground losses.More mines are now utilising real-time monitoring and automated control of ventilation airflow and fan systems to ensure the conditions underground are safe and productive, and power consumption is efficiently managed. There may be significant opportunities to extend ventilation monitoring and control into the refrigeration delivery and control system.Energy reduction is an effective way to reduce costs and CO2 emissions, which is an increasingly important part of corporate governance. More efficient refrigeration control is a further step toward reducing energy consumption. This paper looks at an added step in how real-time monitoring can assist in controlling the output and chilled air delivery of a cooling plant. The requirements, implementation, benefits and challenges will be discussed.

Early Proterozoic ore deposits in the Verde district at Jerome, Arizona have produced 33.7 million metric tons of ore (1893-1975). The United Verde and United Verde Extension deposits produced most of the ore that yielded 1,644,323,100 kg Cu plus large amounts of Au, Ag, and Zn. These deposits are situated on the fractured and hydrothermally altered apex of a large submarine rhyolitic extrusive (Cleopatra formation). Precambrian lithologies are penetratively deformed and at Jerome the Fl folds plunge steep to the NNW. For the past two decades the volcanogenic model has superseded the replacement theory of ore formation.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

The Pennsylvania Joint Coal and Gas Committee Gas Well Pillar Study of 1956 is the bases for well protection pillar design in the US and many other countries. An update was necessary because the well construction common to the gas and coal industries as well as mine configurations, mine depth, and extraction thickness have changed considerably since 1956. As initially envisioned the update would involve a similar empirical study that formed the basis of the initial investigation. However, there are no records of any gas or oil well failures related to coal mining since 1956 when mines followed the initial recommendation, making an empirical study problematic. Thus, the study had to be more analytical, which in return required at least some fundamental research into the behavior of the interaction of coal mining and oil and gas wells. A call to industry about research they have undertaken resulted in obtaining excellent research on the subject from three companies; Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., CONSOL Energy Inc., and Range Resources. These research projects were initially undertaken for internal use and not previously published. John T. Boyd Company reanalyzed these studies and determined how their results would affect protective pillar designs. These research projects pointed to the importance of horizontal movement and shear caused by subsidence and the strength of pillars and their foundations. The importance of geology is important in understanding horizontal shear, ground movement, and floor strength. The failure modes of casing and pipe needed to be understood so the threshold of these movements and stresses could be determined.

Investment activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire has seen a phenomenal surge from epithermal gold exploration. Individual countries are attractive because of lower up-front minerals lease costs (US, Canada), better geological prospectivity (Chile, Indonesia), or cheaper equities (Australia). Since the October 1987 stock-market crash, large companies are shedding minority joint venture interests to focus on core businesses. Some vertical integration is evident in Japanese coal investments in the Pacific Rim. This paper does not cover the aluminum industry oligopoly which is multi-national in character nor does it cover the many Canada to US minerals investments. It will be interesting to see if the new US-Canadian free-trade treaty will reverse that investment flow.

In the Engineering and Mining Journal of Jan. 27, 1900, there appeared an article by Fred T. Greene, describing a method of measuring stopes by the use of strings, a clinometer and a tape. In the early part of 1899 I had occasion to use a somewhat similar method, for the purpose of accurately ascertaining the volume of a very irregular drift connecting two mines. This drift was an important factor in a lawsuit for $150,000, in which it was necessary to determine accurately the volume originally occupied by the material extracted from the drift. While it is unnecessary to give all details of the controversy, some explanation of the conditions is required for a clear understanding of the following description. This drift was started by the a E." Co. from its workings, in about 7 ft. of ore, and headed toward the " G " property, the plan being to extract all the ore between foot- and hanging-walls, but to take out nothing but ore. As the " G." workings were approached; the ore-body became very irregular and much thinner. It was, however, very closely followed, and where the drift broke through into the " G." workings, the hole was only 11 inches high by 14 inches wide, or just about the size of a man-hole in a boiler.. Thus, this connection-drift tapered sharply; and the very irregular foot-wall sloped toward the " G." workings, and entered them at a place where the stope was only about 3 ft. high, and the ground had already commenced to cave. It may be added that the ore-body was a nearly flat deposit of lead carbonate in limestone, the ore and gangue being quite soft. I was called upon by the " G." people to make the survey

"A rapidly growing company in the northern US needed a large auditorium built into a dolomite bedrock hillside. The structure required an 80-foot-deep earth retention system independent of the auditorium foundation and superstructure. Allowable wall movements were limited to less than two inches. A 60-foot-tall permanent shotcreted soil and rock nail wall was designed for excavation support. The soil and rock nail wall utilized both active (post-tensioned) and passive nails, with capacities and installation angles optimized to address varying soil and rock conditions and to support heavy surcharges. The wall was configured with three two-foot-wide benches to facilitate controlled blasting and removal of more than two million cubic yards of soil, limestone and dolomite bedrock, and featured a permanent cast-in-place concrete face and a robust waterproofing and drainage system. A 20-foot-high reinforced concrete retaining wall was required at the top of the soil and rock nail wall to raise grades, resulting in a large surcharge.Design of the soil and rock nail wall was initiated less than three months before the start of construction, requiring expedited geotechnical explorations, analyses, design, and construction that would occur simultaneously. Design changes were made to address the discovery of a weak clay residuum seam at depth running along the base of the excavation, as well as significant changes to the building footprint made after the start of construction. Extensive performance monitoring was conducted during construction to measure vibrations and movements.Introduction and Project BackgroundA fast-growing company in the northern United States had a need for 600,000 square foot, 11,000 seat auditorium as part of its campus expansion. The auditorium was built underground, into a hillside to preserve the views of rolling terrain and farmland beyond. It featured a green roof and rockwork facing that mimicked regional geologic formations. The sixstory building required up to 80 feet of earth retention, including 60 feet of excavation beneath existing grades.As concepts for the project evolved, it became apparent that due to the geologic conditions, space limitations on site and the depth of cut required, a standard counterfort wall system would not be feasible. With groundbreaking for the building three months away, Thornton Tomasetti (structural engineer) engaged GEI Consultants, Inc. (wall design engineer) to design a 1,600-foot-long permanent soil and rock nail wall to support the excavation. The Gypo quartz vein lies near Oliver, British Columbia, and was quarried between 1955 and 1968 for decorative chips. The vein is one of many quartz veins hosted by the Late Jurassic Oliver Plutonic Complex, specifically by the porphyritic quartz monzonite phase of the pluton. The vein has a known length of 155m and a thickness of 46m. It strikes east-west and dips at 60 degrees to the south. Mineralogy is predominantly quartz with minor pyrite, muscovite, fluorite, calcite, apatite and manganese; trace amounts of chalcopyrite, pyrrh otite, marcasite and molybdenite also are present. Quartz in the vein is zoned. A thin grey quartz zone found near the margins of the vein fades gradually into white quartz, which comprises over 95% of the vein. Late-stage boxworks cut earlier mineralization, particularly fluorite, which occurs as pods in a zone fairly close to the hanging wall. Sulphide minerals are found in a centrally located zone in the quartz vein. The hanging wall of the Gypo veins is altered only slightly, but thefootwall is altered extensively to a greisen of muscovite and grey quartz. Evidence suggests that early in rhe vein development, the adjoining country rock was feldspathized. As grey quartz and muscovite was deposited, a period of intensive greisenization and fracturing occurred which so weakened the rock that a central block of greisenized country rock foundered. This provided the open space in which the vein was deposited.

The objectives of the research were to determine whether a model health and safety program could be defined in terms which would enable its application to mines of all types, and, if such a model program could be defined to determine through evaluations in two mining companies whether it would achieve measurable improvements. This volume describes the model, how it was applied in the field, and how it was evaluated. Anecdotal data to illustrate common kinds of safety problems and their solutions are included. The literature and field research that preceded the model definition is discussed in Vol. 2, which covers the period of September, 1980 to September, 1981.

This paper describes two-lane dual motorway tunnels under construction in Bergen. The tunnels are part of a by-pass motorway system throuth the most congested area of the city of Bergen. The tunnels are unique due to their length, heavy traffic, longitudinal ventilation system and the use of a tunnel boring machine, or "TBM", to excavate through hard rock. The tunnels are being built by The Norwegian Public Road Administration and the TBM was delivered by the Robbins Company. The diameter of the TBM is 7.8 m and the tunnel profile is cut by conventional drill and blasting methods in the tunnel's lower half to attain a two lane motorway tunnel. This paper also describes proposed fjord crossings along the Norwegian west coast where the TBM may be used due to its great advantages in comparison to conventional drill and blasting methods.

"Sandfire Resources NL- (‘Sandfire’) DeGrussa definitive feasibility study (DFS) identified geometallurgy as a major factor in achieving optimum plant performance at the DeGrussa mine. A geometallurgical initiative was created to proactively investigate this issue, and a key initial achievement was the 2013 paper by Condon et al (2013) on developing a working geometallurgical model from first principles. Significant advancements in Sandfire’s geometallurgical understanding since that publication now shape how information is presented and communicated.The main geometallurgical parameters so far identified as critical factors affecting plant performance are Cu:S ratio, iron sulfide mineralogy, talc carbonate content and sphalerite content. Apart from specific mill strategies, geometallurgical issues have been managed through communication between departments and strategic run-of-mine (ROM) pad management.This paper uses the current theories of geological evolution of the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit at DeGrussa, to discuss the variability between the orebodies C1, DeGrussa (sea floor mounds) and C4, C5 (sub-sea floor replacement) to highlight the different issues each orebody is expected to encounter when processing.A zone of altered low-grade mineralisation surrounds the main orebodies at DeGrussa, referred to as a halo. Talc minerals are often patchy within this halo and often cause significant recovery issues during processing. This halo has been successfully modelled using MgO as a proxy. The ability to model the talc material assists with both identifying potentially problematic zones for processing and geological interpretation of the ore deposits evolution.Early in geometallurgy studies at DeGrussa it became apparent that it would be useful to identify processing performance prior to mining. This necessitated the incorporation of specific sulfide species into the mining block model. These attributes are interpolated from the logged sulfide estimates allowing a clear picture of the abundance of each mineral type within a defined area.In conjunction with the block model a geometallurgical factor (GMF) graph was developed, identifying sulfide mineralogy based upon mineral assays. These two recent additions to the model provide a clear picture of the nature of the ore sources that will be presented to the processing plant.The future of geometallurgy at DeGrussa will see these tools used to aid mine scheduling with a view to further improve processing recoveries.CITATION:Butler, C, Dale, R, Robinson, S and Turner, A, 2016. Automation technologies are increasingly envisaged to improve underground mining productivity. However, the technologies need to be used and adopted gradually in order to get the best benefits. This paper presents the technical and operational aspects of autoguided production vehicles at Brunswick Mine. During 2001 Noranda?s Brunswick Mine has successfully commissioned an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two orepasses. Operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. The data obtained up to now indicate that the system can operate reliably in mine production
