"The phased application of statistical process control (SPC) infers that processes are classifiable as pre-SPC (or phase zero), phase I and phase II processes, with different objectives being pursued in the different phases. Phase zero processes, defined as processes affected by assignable causes of variation, are characterised as follows: out-of-control with unknown autocorrelation structure having an unknown statistical distribution not performing consistently on target with minimum variability potentially incapable of conforming to the product specifications. The objectives of phase I SPC is to obtain estimates of the mean (µ), variance (s2), probability density function (f(X)) and the autocorrelation structure, as well as transforming the process into a phase II process (defined as a process conforming to specifications and performing on target with minimum variability). As in any other type of research or pragmatic improvement intervention, sampling is required is to achieve these objectives. The challenge of deciding a phase I sampling plan is multifarious since it has to cope with the aforementioned effects of assignable causes and provide for rigour estimates of the unknown parameters. Furthermore, deciding sampling plans in phase I invariably presents a classical catch-22 situation: appropriate sampling is required to determine the autocorrelation structure of a variable, but knowledge of the autocorrelation structure is required to formulate an appropriate sampling plan. This paper suggests, for random variables, guidelines to formulate sampling plans, and presents a methodology to estimate the inherent process parameters of process variables and an approach to identify assignable causes in phase I. CITATION:Breytenbach, W P, 2014. It is felt that prior to the presentation of the technical portion of this paper, some general information would be of interest. The Sar Cheshmeh Copper Mining Company was founded by the Iranian Government to oversee the design and construction of Iran's first copper smelter complex, which will be another step in the industrialization of Iran. Since this is the first such plant in Iran, Sar Cheshmeh wisely chose to enlist the technical assistance needed in regard to the facilities requiring engineering and operating know-how from outside of Iran. To obtain the foregoing, SCCM signed a contract with Anaconda-Iran, Inc., which was formed by The Anaconda Company for this project. The general scope of this contract covers the overseeing of engineering and design by Parsons-Jurden as well as physical plant construction. In addition to this, the same services were given to water supply and tailings disposal systems which were not included as part of the Parsons-Jurden contract. Anaconda-Iran is also assisting SCCM in setting up a training program for Iranian personnel for plant operations, administration, etc., which .will go on for some time after the plant startup, under the guidance of Anaconda-Iran expatriates. SCCM?s other responsibilities, in respect to the development of this industrial effort, are the building of a townsite for approximately 2200 families, the expected manning requirements, having all the facilities necessary to provide a pleasant life in a remote area. It has been estimated that the manpower for operations will be 2050.

This study is an extension of our previous work in the area of coal transportation Its subject is the comparative costing of competing transport erodes. A wide range of costs and aspects of costs are dealt with in terms of engineering - economic analyses of the cost of the components which make up the facility and operating system descriptions of each coal transport mode. The cost comparisons, though analyzed, are not meant to be statements of policy but, rather, an input to decision making. The technical material presented in the succeeding volumes, alone with the earlier work cited above, forms the basis for the analyses. This material may also broaden the general understanding of coal transportation issues and problems. The project is divided into two main sections: (1) lone distance coal transport and (2) gathering and distribution systems. Within each section economic and technological comparisons are made of the available modes. These are used as the basis for comparisons among the modes. Inter-modal compatibility is studied with respect to both mixed trunk line shipment anti with respect to feeder to trunk line and trunk line to distribution systems. The engineering and technological data form the bases for the costing and economic analyses.

Este trabalho visa mostrar as principais etapas deste projeto, os benefícios e os resultados preliminares alcançados com a instalação da nova linha de produção. A Decapagem 03, por seu elevado nível tecnológico, é considerada "estado da arte em produção de bobinas decapadas", garantindo assim a obtenção de produtos de grande valor para os clientes, atendendo aos mais rigorosos padrões de qualidade.

This report presents a quality control approach to the derivation of strategies for monitoring a work environment; specifically, the environment in underground mines where diesel-powered equipment and blasting agents are used. The approach is presented as a series of 22 steps called the Monitoring Strategy Development Scheme. The scheme is an orderly method for selecting from a number of options a strategy or tactics to cost effectively meet the requirements of a chosen objective related to the monitoring of breathing zone air quality. The scheme provides a format to quantify many of the factors that influence the selection of on strategy or tactic over another, and to ensure that important considerations are not neglected. The premise that breathing zone air in work environment can be considered to be manufactured product and that, therefore, conventional quality control approaches are applicable, is introduced. Typical approaches to the quality control of manufactured products and how these approaches can be applied to the selection of monitoring strategies are discussed.

"Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc. opened Canada’s first diamond mine, the EKATI Diamond Mine (EKATI) in the Northwest Territories on October 14, 1998. Four short years later, on November 29, 2002, saw the opening of North America’s first underground diamond mine, the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit, which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in Arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today.Underground mining represents a key component of the long-term business plan for EKATI. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high-value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at EKATI. Koala North is designed and approved as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the development, the Koala North mine is well into its production ramp-up phase and currently producing at around 1,200 t/day from the first two production levels."

With the dramatic increase in world demand for basic raw materials, open pit mining is proceeding at an unprecedented rate. A viable demand is the ever tempting Siren's song for increased production or new facilities. When the Siren's lure is viewed against the panorama of today's world economic milieu the concomitant Scylla and Charybdis are seen in the form of high capital cost and high operating cost. If the economic realities of present day open pit mining are to show a proper return on investment, a clear and penetrating eye must be cast upon the area of mine planning. This paper deals with the problem of overburden removal. In almost every open pit mining operation overburden removal is a significant part of the capital cost and operating cost of the total operation. This paper deals with a new and unique method to affect economical overburden removal. Well known to all are the parameters surrounding draglines, shovels, and bucket wheel excavators. All of these machines require a reasonably stable soil to support them and the shovel and bucket wheel excavator require a reasonably stable bank in which to operate. Their reliability, portability and rate of production per dollar of invested capital are good.

The Putnam Coal Mine, at design capacity, will be the third largest underground bituminous coal mine in the world and will feature the world's longest single flight belt conveyor. Construction is now in process; initial mining will commence in early 1969 and design capacity will be reached in 1971. I'm Jerry Workman, Assistant Mining Manager for the Coal Group of the Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, and I am acting as Project Manager for installation and start-up of the Putnam Mine. The Putnam Coal Mine reserves are located in south-central West Virginia and contain approximately 27,000 acres of prime Pittsburgh No. 8 coal; reserves are sufficient to support a 3.5 MM tons per year operation for over 30 years. The mine portal area is located some six miles inland from the Kanawha River. The river loading facility is located approximately 156 miles by way of river from the market.

IT is the purpose of this essay to give a reasonably complete description of shaft sinking under a rock pentice in a small Northern Ontario gold property. Hallnor is in many ways an exceptional mine, but the sinking operations here described are but typical examples of the excellent practice for which Canadian mines and mining engineers are justly famous the world over. The worth of the subject lies, therefore, nor in its originality, but in its soundness; not in the spectacular, but in the economical and safe. Attention is particularly drawn to the excellent safety record and to the exceptionally low overall sinking cost. INTRODUCTION Prior to April, 1939, the Hallnor No. 1 shaft had been sunk vertically to a depth of 997 feet below the surface. It is a three-compartment shaft, 19 ft. 10 in. by 7ft. 7 in. outside the timbers (see Figure 1).

The rare-earth elements, sometimes known as the lanthanides, comprise the series of 15 chemically similar elements with atomic numbers 57 through 71. Yttrium, with atomic number 39, is often included in the group, because its properties are similar and it more often than not occurs in association with the lanthanides. Thorium is included in this survey due to its close association with the lanthanides, particularly in the mineral monazite. The lanthanides were first recognized as elements around 1750 and were the subject of much study by chemists during the 19th century. The purely chemical methods then available failed to resolve the strange intimate relationships between these elements, and it was not until about 1920 that the full series was explained.

Mineral froth pumping utilising centrifugal slurry pumps is a major engineering challenge for the end users and pump manufacturers due to the undesirable outcome of unstable pump performance. Most of these challenges occur due to incorrect pump selection and suction tank design. The traditional approach is to oversize the pump for pumping mineral froth. New horizontal slurry froth pump designs offer opportunities to improve the mineral froth with challenging (high) Froth Volume Factor while maintaining high efficiency, long wear life and stable pumping performance. This paper examines the flotation process in detail and how froth pumps are designed to handle this arduous process.

El presente trabajo explica el panorama historiográfico del proyectoToquepala, -en tanto proyecto industrial de la historia minera del cobre-, así como su influencia en el desarrollo económico y manufacturero del Perú. El depósito mineral de Toquepala está situado en el departamente de Tacna, zona sur del país. El reconocimiento como zona cuprífera es partir de Velarde en La Minería enel Perú (1908) y Basadre en Estado actual y porvenir de la industria minera en los departamentos del sur del Perú (1918). Posteriormente en 1937, Juan Oviedo de Villegas denunció los depósitos en Toquepala y fue el geólogo Schmedeman de la cerro de Pasco Corporation, quien reconoció la mina como un depósito de pórfido de cobre. Es a partir de 1938 que se inicia la explotación y en 1948, la Northern Peru Mining and Smelting Company se hace propietario de la zona minera. La exploración del depósito de Toquepala se realizó por medio de taladros verticales, perforados con máquinas de diamantina y de percusión. Durante el periodo de perforación, se realiza un sondaje de percusión previo que determina la extensión hacia otros hoyos para muestrear los valores y así medir la capa y espesor del mineral, mientras que el sondaje diamantino informa sobre la interpretación geológica del subsuelo de esa sección. Para la comprobación de los resultados de la perforacíón se buscó comparar los resultados de perforaciones de diámetro pequeños y grandes, con aquellos del minado del mineral en volúmenes de muestras relativamente grandes. Los métodos de muestreo empleados fueron acorde a las prácticas más estrictas actualmente recomendadas en este tipo de trabajos y supervisados bajo el control de un personal técnico. Luego del trabajo de comprobación del depósito de Toquepala, a mediados del año 1955, se unieron cuatro compañías para formar la Southern Peru Copper Corporation y en ese mismo año el gobierno peruano aprueba el desarrollo del programa y operación de este proyecto . Los planes de minado fueron terminados en 1955 minero. El avance de los trabajos de preparación de este proyecto se realiza a través de dos partes: la construcción de los servicios necesarios para la operación y los trabajos de preparación preliminares a la explotación minera. El ajuste de constucción y minado del programa se culminó en cuatro años (1952 - 1954), dando inicio a la operación en 1955. Finalmente, hablar la inflluencia del proyecto de Toquepala en el desarrollo económico industrial en el sur del Perú, es señalar su apoyo en el manejo de las vías de comunicación, favoreciendo el intercambio comercial entre las zonas ganaderas de la sierra de Tacna, Moquegua y el resto del país, así como del progreso de pequeñas industrias. El acceso a la educación y la erradicación de bajas condiciones sanitarias son elementos que también ayudan al avance social de la población, otorgándole a este proyecto sureño, un lugar importante en el panorama industrial y minero del país.

O objetivo deste trabalho é pesquisar sobre as principais falhas apresentadas por revestimentos anticorrosivos modernos comumente empregados para proteção interna de tanques de armazenamento de produtos petroquímicos e avaliar a capacidade da técnica de correntes parasitas para a inspeção não destrutiva deste material. Nesse contexto, as vantagens e limitações da técnica são analisadas. A aquisição de dados foi realizada considerando as propriedades isolantes dos revestimentos nas condições como aplicado e também após o envelhecimento. Amostras foram preparadas com defeitos controlados inseridos no substrato de aço carbono a fim de simular defeitos de corrosão localizada sob o revestimento. A detecção dos defeitos foi avaliada nas amostras com diferentes espessuras e também com a presença de óxido de ferro no interior dos defeitos a fim de simular áreas de corrosão localizada. Através da comparação entre os resultados obtidos no C-Scan original e após o processamento de imagem, foi possível observar uma melhoria significativa na eliminação dos falsos defeitos relacionados a variação da espessura inerente do revestimento pela limiarização multilevel. Também foi possível através do efeito do lift-off distinguir os defeitos reais e falsos defeitos. Nesse aspecto, a técnica de correntes parasitas se mostrou capaz de detectar defeitos neste tipo de material.

Mercury was produced originally at the Idaho Almaden mine from 1939 to 1942. When the ;.nine was shut down, more than 100,000 tons of ore, containing from 2.5 to 3 pounds of mercury per ton, was known to be adjacent to old workings but had been considered too low grade for commercial operation. Later, detailed, systematic exploration by Rare Metals Corporation of America increased and delimited enough minable reserves for further operation to be foreseen for several years. The average grade of the ore is estimated at slightly more than 3.5 pounds of mercury per ton. Open-pit mining and installation of the largest rotary kiln in the United States furnacing mercury ore have made possible profitable exploitation of these reserves (fig. 1). The bulk of the exploration was by percussion drilling, although some diamond drilling was done to check the results. When enough reserves were indicated to assure a successful operation, stripping and plant construction were started simultaneously. Figure 2 is a general view of the plant. The ore bodies, although irregular in size, shape, and grade and covered by essentially barren cap rock, are amenable to low-cost, trackless, open-pit mining. Development consists of stripping the overburden and removing, barren cap rock. Ore is being mined at approximately [5],000 tons per month and treated in a 175-ton-per-day furnacing plant.

This report deals with a portion of the research and development work in the field of synthesis gas purification, carried out by the Bureau of Mines at its Morgantown, W, Va., Station in cooperation with West Virginia University. The Bureau's work in connection with gas purification has been performed with the objective of finding effective, low-cost, processes for removing impurities from synthesis gas to protect the catalyst used in the Fischer-Tropsch process for production of liquid fuels. Synthesis gas used for the production of other chemicals, such as ammonia, alcohols, and methane, requires equally rigorous purification. Although present-day practice in the manufactured-gas industry does not require such a high degree of purification, there is increasing interest in the complete removal of sulfur compounds from city gas. Although the gas-purification work at Morgantown deals with several impurities, major effort has been devoted to organic sulfur compounds in gas; this paper represents a progress report on some of the more important studies in connection with those compounds. Because this is a progress report on the Bureau's experimental work, no attempt has been made to cover the work of others on the subject; references to the literature have been restricted to those bearing directly on the work described.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has been conducting minerals recovery research in support of the nation's geothermal program since 1974. The Bureau's program of laboratory and field studies has focused on determining the materials of construction for geothermal resource recovery plants and an the recovery of mineral values from the geobrines. An analytical program has been conducted at the Avondale Research Center to determine the chemical constituents of some high- and low-salinity geobrines found in the Imperial, Valley of California. Data are reported for the early stages of brine production of femur geothermal wells--the low-salinity, medium-enthalpy brines from the East Mesa Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA), Mesa 6-1 and 6-2, and the high-salinity, high-enthalpy brine from the Salton Sea KGRA, Magmamax 1 and Woolsey 1. The reported results indicate the importance of the operating and engineering history, the operating parameters during sampling, and the method of sampling in order to evaluate the chemical analyses.

This paper describes mining operations at the Iron King mine of the Shattuck -Denn Mining Corp. in Yavapai County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and methods in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and surface plant of the Iron King mine are situated in secs . 15 and 21 , T. 13 N. , R. 1 E. , about 20 miles by State highway 69 east by southeast from the city of Prescott and 1 mile southwest of the mining town of Humboldt on the Prescott -Mayer branch of the Atchison , Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (fig . 1 ) . A l-mile truck haul brings the mill concentrates (lead and zinc ) to bins on a siding of this line at Humboldt ; the silver -gold bullion is handled separately . Some of the oldest residents in the vicinity of Prescott claim that the original location for the Iron King mine was made in 1880. The earliest recorded production was in 1906-1907 . During the first World War the mine produced fluxing ore for the Humboldt smelter . In 1936 the property was purchased under tax sale , and a mill (140-ton capacity ) was erected in 1938. The capacity of this mill was increased to 225 tons the following year , and a cyanide plant was added in 1940 to treat mill tailings . In 1942 the Shattuck -Denn Mining Corp. purchased the property . A new working shaft was sunk , mine development was speeded , and mill capacity was again increased . The predominating locally formation of this district is a pre -Cambrian schist known as Yavapai schist . The Iron King deposit , which carries gold, silver , lead , zinc , and copper , occurs as a series of lenses in a sheared zone of the pre -Cambrian schist . Down to the 600 -foot level the ore was mined and drawn by the shrinkage method . The cut -and -fill method was adopted for the lower levels . Waste rock for stope fill was provided by block-caving an area on the 600 level . Main haulage drifts were driven in the firm footwall , and crosscuts were driven across the mineralized zone at 100 -foot intervals . Grab samples taken from each car of every working place and channel samples cut every 5 feet in development work are considered sufficient for estimating ore reserves .

Los investigadores del National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research han evaluado los efectos que la malla de control de suelos podría tener en la distribución de polvo flotante de roca y carbón en minas de carbón. El creciente uso de mallas para controlar el desconchado o caída de material del techo y las vigas introduce superficies elevadas adicionales para recolectar el polvo de roca o de carbón. During the period January 1, 1977 through July 31, 1977, 5 percent (264,000 tons) of U.S. capacity was closed due to power curtailments in the Pacific Northwest because of the shortage of water. During July, one plant in Tennessee cut production by 50,000 tons annually due to a power reduction by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Full capacity production was resumed at a West Virginia smelter during September. If demand for aluminum is strong it seems likely that aluminum supply during the remainder of 1977 and in 1978 will be tight. The price was increased 3¢ per pound to 51¢ per pound effective March 28, 1977, and by an additional 2¢ per pound to 53¢ per pound, effective July 5, 1977. New projects and expansion of existing facilities are planned by Australian aluminum companies over the next 2 to 3 years. The companies listed have committed themselves to spending approximately A$801 million: Alcoa of Australia Ltd. -New alumina plant at Wagerup, south of Perth. Darling Ranges bauxite is located near the proposed project. A$650 million. Coma 1 co Industries Pty. Ltd. -Increase bauxite mining capacity and upgrade or replace other facilities at its Weipa mines on Cape York Peninsula region of Northern Queensland. A$81 million. Alcan Australia Ltd. -Expansion program that will increase capacity of the Kurri Kurri aluminum smelter north of Sydney about 50 percent, and improvement of other facilities at the plant. A$70 million.

A major hazard to workers in underground mines is fire and the resulting contaminated air. Fire reaches miners thousands of yards away with carbon monoxide gas and other toxic fumes. The same ventilation system that furnishes fresh air to miners can also be the vehicle to carry contaminated air to remote locations. To reduce these problems, the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines entered into Contract H0242016, "Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System," with FMC Corporation, Santa Clara, California, to evaluate mine shaft fire and smoke hazards and to develop and demonstrate a low-cost, reliable mine shaft fire and smoke protection system that would be applicable to a majority of metal and nonmetal mine shafts, including raises and winzes, especially in deep mines.
