"THE Canadian Advisory Committee on Coal Research, which is commonly known as CACCR, has been in existence for the past five years and has held annual meetings during that period. This Committee is comprised of representatives from: the Mines Branch, Fuels and Mining Practice Division, Ottawa; the Geological Survey of Canada; the Dominion Coal Board; and the Provincial Research Councils and Foundations. It embraces all coal research in Canada that is sponsored, for the most part, by Government funds.To bring the country's coal research activities to the notice of the Canadian coal industry, the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division, C.I.M., passed a resolution at the 1964 business meeting in favour of recommending the publication of an annual research report prepared by the CACCR. The first such report was published in the September, 1964, issue of the C.I.M. Bulletin; the second appeared in the November, 1965, issue of the same publication."

1 Triton Square was originally a six-storey building with a one-level basement located within a commercial development near Euston, London. It was designed and constructed in the 1990s and the foundation scheme comprised straight shafted London Clay piles arranged singly beneath columns. The scheme added three storeys and a five-storey infill in the central atrium area to increase the building floorplate by 70% and maintained the usability of the basement space. As the loads to support the additional floorplate area were greater than the capacity of the existing foundations, an optimised strengthening scheme of small diameter piles installed within the existing basement and a slender retro-fitted raft was installed to augment the existing piles. The re-use and strengthening of almost all of the existing foundations enabled re-use of a very high proportion of the superstructure and in approximately 35,000 tonnes of concrete and 1,900 tonnes of reinforcement and structural steelwork being re-used. The structural embodied carbon for the refurbished building scheme is estimated at an average of 136 kgCO2e/m2, achieving a Structural Carbon Rating Scheme (SCORS) “A” rating with components detailed in the paper.

"Industrial minerals may contain the same elements in approximately the same amount. In these cases backscatter electron imaging or chemical analysis are not sufficient to identify the minerals. Another problem arises when micro textures are not detectable in traditional imaging or the grain size is smaller than the X-ray spatial resolution.As a supplementary technique in these cases, application of crystallographic information by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) may be a suitable method. The technique has been demonstrated on three Norwegian mineral raw materials and one Italian marble and shows that it has some advantages compared to traditional techniques.• quantitative measurements by ebsdCommon automatic techniques describing the mineral contents and the occurrence of minerals in free and locked particles, are based on optical-, backscattered electron (BSE)- or X-ray-signals. There are various commercial software systems on feature analysis by backscattered and X-ray signals in combination with image analysis (e.g. Oxford Inca Feature, CSIRO QemScan).Especially in silicates, the occurrence of similar elements in the different minerals is common. Sometimes the various minerals not only contain the same elements, but also approximately the same amount of each element. In these cases BSE imaging and chemical analysis are not always sufficient for identification."

SUMMARY: Geotechnical problems often lead to an increase of construction time and costs for large highway and railway projects. Some reasons, which have led to failures and thus to a delay of construction works as well as to increasing costs, are demonstrated by means of case histories, in which the author was involved as expert or planner. Proposals are made how to identify the reasons and to avoid repetitions. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei Großprojekten der Verkehrsinfrastruktur stehen häufig geotechnische Aufgabenstellungen im Vordergrund. Wegen geotechnischer Probleme kam und kommt es häufig zu Termin- und Kostenüberschreitungen. Anhand einiger Beispiele, bei denen der Autor als Gutachter und Planer beteiligt war, wird gezeigt, welche Ursachen zu Schadensfällen und damit auch zu Termin- und Kostenüberschreitungen geführt haben. Es werden Hinweise und Anregungen gegeben, wie die Ursachen erkannt und Wiederholungen von Schadensfällen vermieden werden können. RÉSUMÉ: À grands projets de l'infrastructure de la circulation, souvent des tâches géotechniques sont au premier plan. Par suite de problèmes géotechniques, souvent des dates et frais ont été dépassés. Au moyen de quelques exemples, à lesquels l'auteur participait comme expert et planificateur, les causes sont mises en vue qui menaient à des cas de dommage et par cela aussi à des dépassements de dates et frais. "BACKGROUND The design, development, fabrication, and test of a cryogenic supply for a refuge alternative is part of a larger effort funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and managed through a Space Act Agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the Kennedy Space Center, FL to create cryogenically based life support equipment responsive to the needs of miners as required by the Miner Act of 2008. This work is done by a joint contractor/NASA team. In particular, the Cryogenic Refuge Alternative Supply System (CryoRASS) serves to provide a respirable air source to miners confined for 96 hours in a mine refuge alternative. This system stores liquid air in a zero-loss cryogenic reservoir (Dewar) until an emergency requires use. The system does not require electric power when in use by miners. Because of the very cold nature of the liquid air, considerable heat stress relief and reduction of humidity is provided in addition to the required replenishment of oxygen. Moderate dilution of CO2 also occurs.INTRODUCTION The design of this new cryogenic refuge alternative supply system (CryoRASS) uses NASA/Kennedy Space Center technology as a development baseline. The design stores cryogenic (liquid) air that is warmed in an air handler box and the resulting gaseous air is introduced to the chamber that not only causes air circulation, but relies upon environmental and human heat to expand the liquid air to a gaseous state. Therefore, the primary benefits of the liquid air source, besides atmosphere maintenance (oxygen), is refuge cooling and dehumidification. This results in reduction of human heat stress and this occurs without the need for electrical power in the refuge chamber. This reduction is a major factor in ""apparent heat"" and the human perception of comfort. Another benefit with introduction of ""air"" vs only ""oxygen"" is the dilution of carbon dioxide. The volume of new air will displace existing refuge air and this air laden with humidity/CO2/low O2 passes out of the refuge relief valves. These RVs should be strategically placed to vent stagnant air preferentially. An initial system test was conducted in our Florida facility in a production 10-person hard chamber for 96 hours. Last year (2014) the system was tested with a 23 person inflatable refuge alternative in Bruceton. For this test, the CryoRASS air handler was redesigned to offer superior characteristics when installed in a Built-in-Place refuge alternative. This report describes the results of the modified system being tested in the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine while attached to a 30 person refuge for 96 (+/-) hours."

The properties and characteristics of lead and zinc have made these metals useful to man in many ways since the days of antiquity. Despite their long history of use, however, these metals have proved to be extremely resilient and responsive to modern needs. New alloys and compounds continue to be developed, adding to the growth of these metals. Consumption data is given for 1969 and compared with one and two decades ago. Trends in major markets also are cited and explained. Uses for lead and zinc which have come into prominence within the past few years are described and explained, with emphasis on the role played by the industry's cooperative research program. Current efforts in the research phase are discussed, with details given on major efforts for both metals, including new alloys, process developments, applications research, finishes, coating, paints and pigments, batteries and fundamental research. A forecast is given of promising new areas and a projection made on a longer term of new applications that may emerge from current research.

"Adsorption of heavy metal ions specifically, Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution on synthetic 4A Zeolite was evaluated. The 4A zeolite was synthesized previously by dehydroxylation of low grade Kalabsha Kaolin at 800 °C, and reacted hydrothermally with 2-4 M NaOH solution at 100 °C for 2h. The adsorption capacity of the metal ions were found to be strongly dependent on pH and initial metal ion concentration. At the optimium conditions the adsorption capacity decreased in the order Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Mn(II) > Cr(VI) ions. Almost complete adsorption was achieved for both of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions at pH > 6, while the adsorption capacity for both Mn(II) and Cr(VI) was 96, and 55.3 % at pH 11 and pH 3, respectively. The results also showed that the grain size of the 4A zeolite has a little effect on the adsorption capacity. The experimental data was compared with two adsorption isotherms, Langmuir and Freundlich isotheroms. The results showed a good agreement of the Langmuir plots with the experimental data.1. Heavy metals are considered hazardous pollutants due to their toxicity, even at low concentration, and nonbiodegradability. Increasing level of heavy metals in natural water bodies poses a serious threat to all living species including humans. It is, therefore, essential to reduce the heavy metal concentration in effluents/wastewater before it is discharged into the water bodies [1]."

Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries and is often used to improve organisational safety. This study was undertaken to examine the content of past incident investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of five elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of three Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed.

"The extraction of molten products and wastes through smelting furnace tap-holes during the tapping process is a complex procedure involving many coupled thermophysical effects. Insight into the fluid flow behaviour in such systems can be gained by using computational mechanics tools to build highfidelity models of the fluid flow and other relevant physics. Previous work using such models indicates that the nature of the flow in the tap-hole, as well as operational parameters such as the tapping flow rate, depends strongly on the properties of the material being tapped and the geometry of the tap-hole channel. Additional complications arise when multiple fluid phases (for example, slag and metal) are present simultaneously, when porous coke beds hinder flow to the tap-hole entrance, and when the geometry of the tap-hole changes over time due to cycles of wear and repair. In the present work, challenges with the coupling of phenomena such as multiphase flow and porosity into computational fluid dynamics methods for tap-hole modelling are discussed in the context of electric furnaces used for ferromanganese production. Qualitative and quantitative results of computational models of flow through tap-holes are presented and compared as a function of material parameters to determine sensitivity effects, and in response to operational parameters to determine typical process behaviour over the duration of a tap. IntroductionPyrometallurgical production using electric furnaces accounts for substantial portion of the world supply of ferroalloys and other strategic materials (Degel et al., 2015). A range of different furnace designs may be used depending on the metallurgical process, with circular three-electrode submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) powered by alternating current being the most common for commodities such as ferromanganese and silicomanganese (Olsen, Tangstad, and Lindstad, 2007).As shown in Figure 1, manganese furnaces typically operate with a deep charge consisting of an upper layer of loose burden (onto the upper surface of which is fed solid raw material), a molten slag layer partially or completely filled with unreacted carbonaceous reductant (generally metallurgical coke), and a molten metal layer which settles to the bottom of the furnace due to its high density. The solid particles present in the slag and burden layers form porous beds which hinder the fluid flow of molten process material and gases inside the furnace (Olsen, Tangstad, and Lindstad, 2007).In order to remove material from the furnace during normal operations, a single tap-hole is built into the sidewall of the vessel near to the level of the hearth. Tapping involves removing both slag and metal phases through the same tap-hole channel, which makes tap-hole design, operation, and maintenance particularly complex. In the case of processes such as ferromanganese, which operate with no external gas injection or open arcs present at the furnace electrodes, flow of material out of the tap-hole is driven primarily by the hydrostatic pressure generated by the weight of the solid and liquid phases above the tap-hole."

The Birimian rocks of the region are gold-bearing and show many similarities to those of Burkina Faso. All three greenstone belts (Goroual, Tera and Sirba) host gold-bearing quartz veins. It appears that, contrary to previous misconceptions, lateritic terrain is not an unfavourable environment for exploration geochemistry. This is demonstrated by the results for the Koma Bangou area, where soil and termite-mound geochemistry have been successfully used in the search for gold. Soil provides an effective sampling medium where it is shallower than about 2 m; there is evidence that some soil anomalies are enhanced by the presence of secondary (botryoidal) gold. In areas of thicker, allochthonous soil cover, termite-mound sampling is more effective. At Koma Bangou an identified resource of some 11 100 000 tonnes with an average gold grade of 2.44 g/t has been reported. The gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins and stockworks aand in the wallrocks of shear and fault zones that trend N, NW and NE. The host rocks are a granodiorite-syenite porphyry and intermediate metavolcanic rocks and tuffs

The thematic mapper (TM) aboard Landsat II records image data at seven wavelength intervals or bands. Three record the visible region; three record reflected IR energy. A false color image combining bands 7, 4 and 2 rendered as red, green and blue respectively provides maximum discrimination of rock types in arid regions. Structural analyses and interpretation defines regional structures, large volcano-tectonic features intrusive complexes, all which localize mineralization. Special digital processing using the ratio: Band 3 / Band 1 can identify limonites and other iron minerals. The ratio: Band 5/ Band 7 identifies clays and alunite. These ratio images show features and patterns of hydrothermal mineral systems: ?patterns of sulfide and alteration zoning in large porphyry systems, and zones of strong silica, quartz-alunite-illite, and pyrite-sericite in epithermal centers. Thus, digitally processed Landsat TM images are a cost effective and rapid means to recognize altered areas and define targets for large mineralized systems.

"Air inversion is a meteorological phenomenon generally occurs during winter times. Release of pollutants below the inversion height in an open-pit mine during periods of weak winds and consequently weak vertical mixing may result in very high concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants, causing serious consequences for health and safety of miners. Mine operations cease if the concentration of NOx or CO exceeds the threshold limit value (TLV) of the pollutants. Artificial ventilation is required to dilute the pollutants to an extent that mine workers can safely resume work. Studies of the turbulence parameters suggest that effective ventilation of the pit and removal of pollutants can be accomplished if a large enough mixing length in the open pit can be created. Turbulent mixing by eddies of different length scales under an inversion layer is product of wind shear, thermal gradient and buoyancy. The main result of turbulence is mixing of the atmospheric profile and transport of momentum. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Simulation results of a novel mitigation approach using cloud cover will be presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION In extreme climatic conditions, deep open-pit mines tend to trap pollutants at the pit bottom due to air inversions. Keeping open pits adequately ventilated is a considerable challenge for the mining community. Mine operators in cold regions are very familiar with this problem, the severity of which can be judged from Figures 1 and 2. The top portion of the figures show clear sky and snow covered benches. The brown haze, containing various contaminants accumulated over time in the pit under the air inversion, can be seen in the bottom portion of the figures. Several Arctic or subarctic mines have reported air inversions. Even Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon pit in Utah has reported local air inversions from time to time [1].Mitigation of pollutants in deep open-pit mines in the Arctic is a challenging task. Release of pollutants below the inversion height in an open-pit mine during periods of weak winds and consequently weak vertical mixing may result in very high concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants, causing serious consequences for human health. Mine operations cease if the concentration of any one of the pollutants (NOx or CO) exceeds the TLV. Sustained cessation of a mine operation has serious economic consequences. For continued mining operation, the levels of pollutants must be below the TLVs. If no significant synoptic meteorological situation changes during an inversion, a warm air mass sits over the cold air mass within the open pit. Artificial ventilation is required to dilute the pollutants to an extent that mine workers can safely resume work. Some of the early approaches in artificially ventilating open pits were attempted in the USSR. Most of the studies by Soviet researchers suggested the use of turbojets and turbo-propeller engines, airscrews, axial pit fans, and meteotrons [2, 3]. However, the majority of these studies were only theoretical in nature, with no evidence of an approach that really worked in practice."

IN recent years, most of the reconnaissance work of the Geological Survey of Canada has been mapped on a scale of 1 inch to 4 miles. Topographic base maps, commonly made from aerial photographs, were available to the geologist for such work. The advent of war curtailed aerial photography for civilian purposes, and by 1941 all areas already photographed had been geologically mapped. Nevertheless, the need for geological maps to assist post-war prospecting was so apparent, and the country to be covered is so vast, that some new method of rapid mapping had to be devised. It was felt that the need would be met if geological maps could be produced at a scale of 1 inch to 8 miles, provided they were sufficiently accurate in topographic detail to serve as guides to travel. Though in such maps there would be considerable sacrifice of geological detail, they would serve to outline, at least approximately, the major geological units, some of which might prove of sufficient interest to warrant later detailed study. It seemed that such mapping would be particularly useful in the northern regions of Canada which the work of early explorers has indicated are underlain largely by granitic rocks. These, so far as is known, are barren of mineral deposits, but within them are known to be areas or bands of 'greenstones' of the type that, in some localities, have been found to contain valuable orebodies. The problem, then, was to devise a method of mapping, particularly of such greenstone bands, that would make it possible to cover a relatively large area-say 30,000 square miles-in one season and at a cost below that of 4-mile mapping, with, of course, some sacrifice of accuracy. The problem seemed to be threefold: (a) to observe as much of the bed-rock as possible; (b) to produce a topographical map of as much of the area as possible, with particular reference to portions of geological interest; and (c) to cover as large an area as possible in a limited time, which meant faster modes of travel than have hitherto been used. The obvious answer to all three phases of the problem was the use of aircraft. If rock types could be broadly differentiated from the air, reconnaissance traverses by air would supply the answer to the first part of the problem. For topography, air photographs taken on reconnaissance flights appeared to be the answer. For the third phase of the problem, the use of aircraft was ideal.

This article explores the Fray Farthing Chen (FFC) Cambridge process, a novel method for the electrochemical deoxidation of metal oxides in molten salt, discovered at the University of Cambridge in 1997. The process was hailed as a highly promising, potentially low cost, novel method for the production of titanium metal direct from its oxides. The article should inform researchers in the field of some of the challenges in the commercialization of a novel, high profile process involving multiple stakeholders. The author, former senior process engineer at British Titanium Plc, the company originally tasked with commercializing titanium production via the FFC Cambridge process, reviews the latest literature and discusses past and present progress in the pursuit of low cost titanium metal via this process. A sampling program was conducted in 2008 to determine the run of mine characteristics of 5 coal seams. The sampling program included size analyses and float sink determinations. The samples were analyzed for ash and mercury concentrations for each size and gravity fraction. This paper will report on the sampling program, the analytical results, and the correlations determined in the data set investigated.

This paper presents methods in use in British coal-mines for the suppression of dust. While the effect of present-day treatment will not be apparent for several years, in pits in South Wales, concentrations as high as 50 gm./1,000 cu. ft. were some years ago fairly common in various operations at or near the coal-face, with an average concentration of 20 gm./1,000 cu. ft. Now the average concentration in what were previously dusty pits is probably not greater than 3 gm./1,000 cu. ft.Nevertheless, every effort must be made to improve conditions still further. In South Wales it is claimed that 99% of the coal-faces requiring treatment have been dealt with either by wet cutting, infusion, or hand-spraying. The extent of the treatment by these methods can be gauged by the fact that the total length of coal-faces now being treated by water infusion in Cardiff and Swansea areas is about 33,000 yds., by wet cutting 25,000 yds., and by hand-spraying nearly 14,000 yds. The influence of methods of mining upon dust production is only mentioned very briefly in this review, and there is no doubt that much more is to be learned concerning this aspect. It can be stated, however, that good mining practice is essential to prevent unnecessary dust production, and the problem of dust in mines will be solved only by the closest co-operation between mine managers, workmen, and scientists.

Geostatistical estimation techniques were customized to enable forecast of production figures at the Silver Bell uranium mine (Uravan District). Surface drill hole data were used to provide a block model of kriged estimators of average uranium grades. The recoverable figures, such as ore-waste ratio and ore grade, are then deduced from regressive curves previously obtained from underground information and production data. Cross-validations of the entire model were performed and were found positive.

"FOUR PAPERS ON CEMENTED BACKFILL were given at the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1970:Weaver, W. S., and Luka, R., ""Laboratory Studies of Cement-Stabilized Mine Tailings"".Pasieka, A. R., Beattie, H. F., and Espley, G. Somewhat over ten years ago, The Inter-national Nickel Company of Canada, Limited and Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited started experimenting with the addition of Portland cement to mill tailings to produce improved backfill and cheaper floors for scraping. Shortly after, the Canada Cement Company Limited (now Canada Cement Lafarge Ltd.), with full support of the two mining companies, started an extensive research program to provide the technologic-al data necessary to exploit what was obviously going to be a significant development in mining technology."
