As a result of the world depression and the consequent heavy fall in the price of tin, Malaya joined with other great tin producing: countries of the world in a restriction scheme that heavily restricted production from its individual mines. This condition, together with the knowledge that it was becoming more and more difficult in, Malaya to acquire further areas and so prolong the existence of a specific company's activities, induced Mr. H. G. Scott, managing director for the Siamese Tin Syndicate Ltd., to consider other possible sources of production. Mainly because of the conditions that obtained in Tasmania, he turned his attention to that country, where, not only could mining be carried on without restriction as to output, but where the incidence of the exchange position created favourable conditions for operation. The district selected for examination was that of St. Helens, on the East Coast of Tasmania, which district had behind it a long record of successful tin mining operations.PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS OF SIAMESE TIN SYNDICATE LTD. Potential air emission impacts to federal Class I areas from distant sources are receiving increasing scrutiny by federal land managers (FLMs). This paper provides summary results of the impact analyses conducted for FLMs and PSD permitting of a proposed expansion for a taconite processing facility. Results from air quality increment, acid deposition, mercury deposition, and visibility analyses for Class I areas located 50 to 162 km from the facility showed the project would meet the respective regulatory and guideline values for the specific analyses. During the course of the air quality analyses, potential new requirements from the FLMs’ Air Quality Related Values Workgroup (FLAG) efforts and USEPA’s Regional Haze Program were brought into the PSD discussions. The implications for these future guidelines and regulations as they may affect future expansions at other mineral processing facilities are also discussed.

On one project the settlements were not provided for in the design of the structure. Soils are sands, silts, and varved clays to shale. A rift in a central area is 600 feet deep. "The legacy of abandoned mines in Canada creates issues that impact on both the health and safety of Canadians and the environment. Solutions to the problems of abandoned minesites require a detailed understanding of site conditions, the engineering solutions which may be relevant, and planning for effective use of the land. In this paper, the authors outline the basic thrusts that have been developed at CANMET to address this problem. These include: multiprovincial agreements to develop a national database; methods of site rendering; a ten-year research program to develop engineering approaches; the review of a large number of case studies; and outlining the associated risks. Examples of the applications of this research are provided in the areas of: municipal, provincial, and federal co-operative projects; site-specific applications; and international linkages."

A series of electron beam, cold hearth, single melt Ti-6Al-4V plates (nominally 2.5 cm thick) impacted by 2cm diameter, 4340 steel projectiles (with 54g nominal mass) at velocities ranging from 0.633 to 1.027 km/s were sectioned along the impact axis and examined by optical metallography to characterize the formation, growth, and microstructure of adiabatic shear bands. Near ballistic limit velocities, the shear bands propagate towards the rear of the target where they coalesce and grow to provide a cylindrical solid state flow regime for the plug volume.

Serious disagreements are often found between experimentally determined intrinsic diffusion coefficients and those calculated employing the usual form of the vacancy theory. In the new theory it is proposed that the total intrinsic flux, Ji, of component i, is the sum of a part, f, due to the usual random exclzanges of component i with the vacancies, and a second part, Ji, due to exchanges with the uacancies composing the net vacancy flux. The present treatment, while less powerful than that of Manning, has the advantage of easy uisualization and of facilitating the application of the vacancy-flux effect to complex systems. IT is becoming increasingly evident that there are serious deficiencies in the version of the vacancy theory of diffusion that has been widely used for the past 20 years. One type of evidence is the frequent lack of agreement between intrinsic diffusion coefficients and tracer diffusion coefficients, even taking account of the thermodynamic factor. A second kind of evidence is the observation of a Kirkendall shift larger than theoretically possible, that is, larger than can be accounted for without assigning a negative value to one of the two intrinsic diffusion coefficient.'- The thermodynamic factor could conceivably make both coefficients negative, but not just one. It is clear that a cause of these anomalies, apart from any inadequacy of the usual vacancy theory, might lie in an oversimplified treatment of the data. Adequate experimental techniques, including the use of moderate pressure during the diffusion anneal, are now available to insure that porosity, lateral expansion, and so forth, can be kept negligibly small in most cases. The effect of differences in atomic volume can be of major importance, and it is essential that one of the available methods4 be used to account for this factor. In the present treatment this is accomplished by the consistent use of moles per cubic centimeter as the unit of concentration. Of the various possible inadequacies of the vacancy theory, attention will be given here only to effects of the net vacancy flux. annin' has previously considered this question, beginning with an analysis of atomic jumping of tracer atoms. When he added the effect of a concentration gradient, new terms arose that could be associated with the flow of vacancies. The present treatment uses quite a different approach. The usual vacancy flux, J,, is introduced explicitly, and a simple analysis predicts major changes in the intrinsic diffusion coefficients from this cause. The usual assumptions are made that only a vacancy mechanism is operative, that the formation of voids can be neglected, and that changes in the partial molal volumes, vl and v2, are negligible. The significant diffusion coefficients for the present topic are Dl and D,, the intrinsic coefficients, which enter in the equations, where the flux Ji, moles per sq cm per sec, is that crossing the Kirkendall interface. The concentration, ci, is in units of moles per cu cm, and the concentration gradient, aci/ax, is evaluated at the Kirkendall interface. It will be recalled' that the calculation of Dl and D2 involves the measurement of areas on the diffusion curve with respect to the positions of the Kirkendall and Matano interfaces. In the case of the anomalies mentioned earlier, the Kirkendall shift is too large to be accounted for by the diiferetzce in fluxes (J2 -J1), given by Eqs. [I] and [2]. The logical inference is that the flux of the solvent atoms, J1, is actually in the same direction as the flux of the solute atoms, Jz. In terms of Eq. [I] this requires that Dl have a negative value. However, it would be somewhat misleading to state that the solvent atoms are diffusing up their own concentration gradient. The explanation that will be advanced here pictures competing processes producing the net flux of solvent atoms: 1) diffusion of the solvent atoms down their own gradient by random exchanges with vacancies; and 2) diffusion of solvent atoms in the opposite direction by exchanges with the net vacancy flux. ACTION OF THE NET VACANCY FLUX Theories of vacancy diffusion can be formulated with varying degrees of refinement, and the present theory has purposely been kept as simple as appeared adequate to explain the phenomenon in question. In particular the following aspects have been neglected: 1) the gradient of vacancy concentration in comparison to the gradient of the atomic species; 2) departure of vacancy concentration from the local equilibrium value; 3) variation of the jump frequency, LO, with the specific surroundings of the atom-vacancy pair being considered; 4) correlation effects. These and other refinements can be considered once the essential mechanism has been established. The essential idea of the present analysis is to calculate the total intrinsic flux, Ji, of component i as the sum, JlJ?±j{ [3] where J; is attributable to the usual random atomic jumping, and J{ is a contribution arising from the net vacancy flux, J,. The ability to increase and maintain dragline productivity is a key mine driver for the Coal Creek Mine. The Coal Creek Mine is owned by Arch Coal Inc subsidiary Thunder Basin Coal Company; located near Gillette, WY. Coal Creek Mine overburden stripping is primarily accomplished by a BE-1570W walking dragline in combination with cast blasting and dozer assist for bench preparation. The two main variables impacting dragline performance are maintenance reliability and operator skill levels. The mine?s most recent process improvement efforts have focused on its most valuable asset - the operator. Various techniques have been used to reduce variability in the dragline operator?s digging performance. Utilization and communication of operator performance data, statistics, and video reviews have been of great value towards achieving this goal. Operators are given a chance to critique operational tendencies from a third-person point of view, and are also presented statistical feedback to support observations. From these sessions, operators gain knowledge as to what portions of the dig cycle can be improved in order to reduce cycle time and increase productivity. BACKGROUND The BE-1570W walking dragline was commissioned at Coal Creek in November 2006 after relocating from Arch of Wyoming located in southeast Wyoming. The first two years of operation the machine was performing simple side cast stripping due to the low ratio. Coal Creek Mine is a multiple seam operation with overburden thickness ranging from 24 to 140 feet. Early in 2009 the ratio increased to the point where transitioning to cast blast/extended bench stripping was necessary. The current mining conditions consist of a mixture of both stripping styles where the ratio allows. The dragline crews running the machine consist of a mixture of experience levels ranging from 30+ years to only a few years. It has been in this digging environment and slightly inexperienced personnel that the focus has been set for improvement in dragline performance.

Over forty years of uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario (1956–1996) has resulted in the production of over 300 million pounds of uranium. With the completion of mining activity, Rio Algom Limited and Denison Mines Limited are utilizing progressive environmental technologies and management systems to reduce and manage the environmental risks associated with the 150 million tonnes of potentially acid-generating tailings in nine regional waste management areas. Water covers designed to reduce oxygen entry and, thereby, significantly inhibit acid generation, have been applied at six of the sites with the Quirke site serving as a demonstration site for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage program. All five of Rio Algom Limited’s effluent treatment plants are monitored and controlled from a central control station utilizing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system based on “Fix Dmacs” technology. Scheduling, auditing and reporting of plant operating and environmental monitoring programs for the entire watershed are controlled utilizing the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REIMS). Proper application of these technologies and management systems facilitates delivery of cost-effective environmental monitoring, care and maintenance programs at these sites and provides tools to demonstrate compliance with all environmental performance criteria.

THE ores treated at the concentrating plant largely come from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately intergrown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead concentrates, (2) zinc concentrates, (3) acid-grade fluorspar concentrates and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrates.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 4 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; such as, for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. Solvent extraction of nickel and cobalt from the real leach solutions was studied by using a novel extraction system. The extraction system was a mixture of 2,6-bis-[5-n-nonylpyrazol-3¬y]] pyridine (BNPP) and dinonylnaphthalene sulfonic acid (DNSSA). The BNPP represents a novel molecule, which was designed and synthesized in our laboratory. Real solutions for the study were prepared by leaching of two different cobalt-nickel bearing concentrates, cobaltite [CoAsS] concentrate from Blackbird Mine, Idaho, and siegenite [(Ni,Co)3S4] concentrate from Missouri Lead-Belt. The major strength of the system was the selectivity of extraction toward nickel and cobalt from iron containing solutions. Other metals such as Mn, Mg, Ca, Al and As were not extracted. Due to the irreversibility of copper extraction, its removal from solution was required prior to the extraction of nickel and cobalt. Zinc was not as strongly extracted (i.e. its stripping was readily achieved) as was copper . Flowsheets for the recovery of nickel and cobalt were also developed.

Northern Australia has been home to uranium mining for over 70 years, more or less continuously. In the early days, post World War 2, there was little effort made to remediate workings at the end of operations. The three “campaigns” of uranium mining (1951-55; 1960-70; and 1979-present) are all now in various stages of remediation. This includes not only the large legacy site at Rum Jungle but also smaller fields like the South Alligator Valley, as well as contemporary works at Nabarlek and the ongoing closure at Ranger– Australia’s longest operating uranium mine. This paper briefly describes some of the past remediation activities before providing an update on the Ranger closure programme and future timetable.

"A coherent FM laser radar based sensor for remote metrology of plasma facing material surfaces in a fusion reactor is described. The sensor is capable of 3-D mapping of surfaces, based on a series of precise range measurements from large distances (up to 20 m). Other features include the ability to operate under adverse environmental conditions involving very high gamma radiation (3xI04 Gy/hr), ultra-high-vacuum (<I0-5 Pa), and high temperature (200°C). The paper describes the basic principles of the sensor, together with experimental results obtained with the sensor. The ability of the sensor for remote rendering of ""visual quality"" images without the need for any external illumination is also illustrated.IntroductionMeasurement of the features of large area surfaces (-1500 m2) to sub-millimeter accuracy, from relatively large distances (20 m), is necessary in the case of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER -a 1500 MW fusion reactor that is currently in the design phase). Furthermore, the measurements may have to be performed after the reactor is temporarily shut down. During such shut-downs, the ITER in-vessel environment will be highly radioactive due to neutron activation of the reactor wall (gamma radiation field of 3xl04 Gy/hr), the vessel will be maintained under ultra-clean vacuum conditions (<10-5 Pa), and the plasma facing surfaces will be maintained at elevated temperature (200°C). Therefore, the precision measurements must be conducted remotely, and because of the large dimensions of the fusion reactor and the limited number of access ports, the measurements must be done from large distances. The reactor vessel is a large toroid. Fig. 1 shows the cross section of the toroidal vacuum vessel, and the location of the metrology probe. Because of the very large surface area involved, fast scanning capability is also needed to reduce the reactor down-time."

The proper selection of a coal for a particular use depends on knowledge of fundamental data concerning the coals that offer, particularly their type and rank. Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0155155, "Demonstrating the Noise Control of a Coal Preparation Plant." A Consolidation Coal Company coal preparation plant (the Georgetown Plant) was selected for demonstration of various noise control techniques and materials in a commercially operating plant. At the start of the project, the 1650 tons per hour (tph) plant was surveyed to document the existing sound levels and worker noise exposures. On the basis of the survey, individual noise sources were characterized and assigned priorities for treatment. Four categories of noise control treatments were installed in this plant: ? Resilient impact pads ? Curtains ? Chute liners ? Resilient screen decks. Currently (1977) available resilient impact pads and curtains were found to be suit-able for general use in coal preparation plants; in the Georgetown Plant, they provided significant noise reduction [6 to 10 dB(A)]. The overall performance of the chute liners which also provided useful noise reduction, was strongly dependent on the specific installation. Although the resilient screen decks have the potential for 7 to 9 dB(A) of coal/screen impact noise reduction, blinding and delamination (in composite decks) en-countered at the Georgetown Plant represented major design problems for these products. This program achieved noise reductions of up to 10 dB in various areas of the Georgetown Plant (within the restrictions imposed by the plant&apos;s operation) resulting in significant reduction in worker noise exposures.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted mineral investigations in the 1,227,000-acre Emigrant Trail study area of Nevada during 1992. During the USBM investigation of 25 areas of development interest, 190 mineral localities were identified and 260 rock and 50 alluvial samples were taken. At least 0.5 million troy ounces of gold, 2.3 million troy ounces of silver, 3.3 million pounds of copper, 10.9 million pounds of lead, 2.4 million pounds of zinc, 500 tons of alunite, 40,000 tons of sulfur, 9,000 pounds of mercury, and 21,000 pounds of tin have been mined from the area and vicinity. Adjacent to the study area, gold is being mined at large, open-pit gold mines, the Hog Ranch and Hycroft Resources, Inc., Sulphur mines, and new production is planned at the Rosebud LAC/Equinox. Hog Ranch mine is nearing depletion, but resources of more than 0.5 million troy ounces of gold and about 5 million ounces of silver are estimated for the Rosebud LAC/Equinox project and more than 0.4 million ounces of gold for the Hycroft Resources, Inc., Sulphur mine. Significant investigations are occurring at SP Ridge and other sites near Scossa and at the Dan claims in the Southern Calico Mountains. Precious opal, placer gold, and geothermal energy resources occur in the study area and vicinity.

The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as&apos; it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

"Quantitative information about the quality of metal balance results is often overlooked when making important plant production planning decisions. Not only is this common omission made in a context where many measurements taken in and around mineral processing plants carry significant errors, but it also conflicts with the AMIRA P754 Code of Practice for Metal Accounting. The fact that metal balances are typically published without any indication of data quality may give the wrong impression that the measurements are unquestionably accurate. While it is true that statistical data reconciliation can improve the confidence intervals of redundant variables, there is no data processing technique that brings them down to zero at a finite cost. In this paper, we review the entire data flow, starting from field instruments to metal accounting-based decision-making to show how measurement errors are transmuted into business risks associated with production planning. Necessary conditions for first exposing then quantifying such business risks are stated. Pitfalls to be avoided are also discussed. Finally, a simplified risk assessment and management procedure which considers the quality of metal balance results are applied to a polymetallic mineral processing plant. INTRODUCTION Each and every mineral processing plant has production reporting obligations. In this paper, we are concerned with metal accounting reports (Morrison, 2008) where saleable metal flows and inventories are estimated and published. These metal accounting reports are delivered to a variety of stakeholders who use them for internal management purposes (day-to-day plant production planning, plant operation optimisation, capital spending, etc.) as well as for external management (royalty settlements, tolling agreements, etc.). Hence, there should be no doubt that spotless metal accounting is instrumental to high-quality corporate governance (Gaylard et al., 2014) of mining and metallurgical companies. To this extent, one would have expected industry-endorsed standards to have emerged a long time ago. However, the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting was explicitly recognized as an industry-wide problem only in August 2001 during an SAIMM workshop held in Cape Town, South Africa. Discussions that followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, “Metal Accounting and Reconciliation”, in 2003."

Introduction The Cove gold-silver deposit is located in Lander County, NV about 50 km (30 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is in the north-central part of the Fish Creek Mountains within the McCoy mining district. Gold was first discovered in the McCoy district in 1914 by Joseph H. McCoy (Vanderburg, 1939). From 1928 to the early 1930s, minor production occurred from shallow underground workings. Total gold production was less than 311 kg (10,000 oz; Stager, 1977). The district was inactive until the mid-1960s when it was explored by Bear Creek Mining, Summa Corp., Houston Oil and Minerals Corp., Gold Fields, and Tenneco Minerals. Tenneco began a detailed reevaluation of the McCoy deposit in the fall of 1984. Tenneco&apos;s decision to place the deposit into production was based on a geological reserve of 8.7 t (280,000 oz) of gold (Kuyper, 1987). Subsequent exploration and development drilling of the McCoy skarn deposit has more than doubled the mineable skarn reserves to 19 t (615,000 oz) of gold. In September 1985, Tenneco began development work on the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The project is an open-pit, heap leach mine. The first gold was poured in April 1986. Echo Bay Mines acquired Tenneco&apos;s precious metals properties in October 1986. The mining operation and district exploration started by Tenneco is continuing under the Echo Bay&apos;s ownership. The Cove deposit was discovered in January 1987 and production began in February 1988. The deposit will begin as an open-pit, heap leach operation. It will be converted into an open-pit and underground mine with a 9-kt (10,000-stpd) mill. Geologic setting The Cove gold-silver deposit is situated on the east flank of the Fish Creek Range. Surface elevations range from 1460 to 1680 m (4800 to 5500 ft). The deposit is 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The Cove deposit is hosted by the Augusta Sequence of Triassic age. Three formations of the sequence are mineralized at the Cove. In ascending order they are the Favret, Panther Canyon, and Augusta Mountain formations. The Favret formation is a gray, locally silty limestone that is commonly fossiliferous. The base of the formation is not exposed. Exposed and drilled intervals are more than 60 m (200 ft) thick. Conformably overlying the Favret formation is the Panther Canyon formation. This formation is 215 m (700 ft) thick and consists of a siliclastic and carbonate sequence of conglomerate, quartzite (sandstone), mudstone, limestone, and dolomite.
