This year, the Foundation will honor one living Hall of Fame inductee, two Medal of Merit recipients, four honorees from Mining’s Past and an Industry Partner for their respective contributions to the mining industry.Gary J. Goldberg will be the 2017 Hall of Fame Inductee and will serve as the keynote speaker at the awards banquet. Goldberg was appointed president and chief executive officer and joined the board of directors of Newmont Mining Corp. in March 2013. Prior to this appointment, he served numerous companies in key positions including Rio Tinto Minerals, US Borax and Coal & Allied Industries. At every appointment, he was able to improve safety concerns and reduce injury rates. While serving as chairman of the National Mining Association, Goldberg launched the CORESafety initiative and US Borax was the first mining company to receive the California Governor’s Environmental and Economic Award.The Medal of Merit will be awarded to John C. Lacy, a shareholder of DeConcini McDonald Yetwin & Lacy, P.C. and a director of the Global Law Center at the University of Arizona’s Law School. Lacy’s law practice concentrates on mining and public land law and encompasses transactional and title consideration involving acquisition of mineral rights. He played a crucial role in the revisions to the mining law of the Republic of Bolivia and the English translation of the mining laws and regulations of Mexico. Lacy’s expertise in mining law impelled the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law to approach him to head the new Global Mining Law Center in 2015. The program now partners with the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources and offers cross-listing of courses"

The fundamental ideas of Computer Aided Lignite Mining (CALM) with respect to hardware and software used at Rheinbraun are explained and outlined in detail. The computers used in the main data processing department and in the different departments in the mines are described. Special emphasis is laid upon the network connecting the computers at different places for data-exchange. Concerning technical applications, the main facilities of CALM are deposit and pit modelling, complex geomechanic computations and mass calculations, data recording from the production process in the pits and refining plants, and detailed information and planning systems for water management and mining equipment. Concerning administrative applications, the main facilities of the software are the accounting system with cost controlling and planning, the materials management system with stock control, forward planning and computer supported order procesing, a system for the administration of property within and surrounding the mines, and systems for personnel administration and payroll. The various software systems developed for these application and the influence of data processing technique, such as data base management and the interconnection of data processing systems, are demonstrated.

The 2,250-MW, coal-fired Navajo Generating Station located in Page, AZ draws water from Lake Powell using submersible pumps installed in five inclined shafts. Drought threatens to lower the reservoir to below the existing intakes. A system of new steel-lined intake shafts located on the same site was required for uninterrupted plant operation. The small size of the site, and the need to keep the existing system in operation, required detailed designs and placed significant limitations on construction equipment and activities. The Navajo Sandstone that forms the near vertical shoreline of the reservoir is 98 percent very fine grained quartz, highly abrasive and contains highly fractured intervals that presented numerous challenges to drilling the new 152-m (500-ft) deep, 109-cm (43-in.) diameter intake shafts inclined 23° to 26° from vertical. Spatial constraints, submersible pump design and operational criteria required that each shaft have a unique inclination and orientation and hit a small breakout target located 76 m (250 ft) under water. Sophisticated drilling equipment and techniques as well as state of the practice downhole survey technology and methods were used to make adjustments and maintain drilling accuracy with less than 1 percent deviation. Environmental requirements mandated water as the drilling fluid and grout was not allowed in to the lake under any circumstances. The shafts were videotaped and the breakout locations were examined using an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to verify shaft locations and rock conditions, and to guide placement of pneumatic packers to ensure grout did not transmit to the lake during the steel liner installation. In anticipation of the invasion of quagga mussels, the shaft design included an allowance for a chemical dosing system and a copper-rich alloy at the exposed portions of the steel liner.

Flotation frothers are heteropolar molecules that are preferentially adsorbed at the bubble interface to enhance the flotation performance by promoting the formation of small and stable bubbles. Frothers have different characteristics that can be used to classify them. A classification framework has been recently presented by Saavedra Moreno et al (2022) to classify non-ionic frothers by conducting a principal component analysis (PCA) and a hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). However, for the purpose of the present research, only five frother characteristics, including molecular weight (MW), hydrophile–lipophile balance (HLB), critical coalescence concentration (CCC), the minimum Sauter mean diameter (DL), and foam stability index (DFI) were used in the PCA and HCA. All those characteristics were evaluated for a two-phase system in the absence of particles. Realising the important role that particles play in froth stability and behaviour, the effect of hydrophobic particles on the presented frother classification framework was investigated in this study. Four frothers with different characteristics, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), 1-pentanol, tri (propylene glycol) (TPG), and tri (propylene glycol) methyl ether (TPM), were chosen. The experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of silica particles esterified with 1-pentanol. It was evident that the results for 1-pentanol, TPM, MIBC, and TPG in the three-phase system agreed well with the frother classification presented for the two-phase system as frothers were clustered in the same groups. The findings from this research support the use of the frother classification system presented in two-phase system to select a specific frother for a particular application without the necessity of conducting laborious experiments in a three-phase system.

The Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming and southcentral Montana contains the largest strip minable reserve of compliance coal (0.27 kg or 0.6 or less Ibs of sulfur per million Btu) in the United States. In mining parlance, it is the mother lode. Wyoming's portion of the Basin is called the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB). It has been the nation's top coal producer for the past nine years. And based on 1997 production statistics and estimated strippable compliance coal reserves, Wyoming should remain the nation's top producer for the next 51 plus years. In August 1994, ME featured 10 articles that covered all aspects of coal production in the SPRB. In this issue, five authors update the 1994 articles and provide a pre- diction of what the Basin will look like at the turn of the century. The equilibrium between carbon-saturated Fe-Cr-Si-C alloys and SiO2-CaO-MgO-A2O3-CrO2-FeOy slags was studied under atmospheres of argon and carbon monoxide at temperatures of 1500 and 1600°C. The equilibrium distribution of chromium, silicon, and iron between the slag and the metal phases was determined for different compositions of both phases under different atmospheres and temperatures. It is shown that silicon transfer from the slag to the metal increases with increasing temperature, decreasing carbon monoxide partial pressure, decreasing carbon content of the metal, increasing chromium-to-iron ratio of the metal, increasing silica content of the slag, and decreasing lime-to-alumina ratio of the slag. Some activity calculations were made for the experiments conducted at 1600OC in a carbon monoxide atmosphere. It is also shown that a decrease in the iron content and an increase in the slag basicity decrease the chromium content of the slag. A major proportion of the chromium present in the slag was found to be in the divalent state under the highly reducing conditions prevailing in the experiments. The chromous capacities of these slags were calculated and were found to decrease with increasing basicity.

Over the past few years, our laboratory has been investigating the loading on vehicles due to the detonation of buried explosives. We have been using target plates to represent the bottom of the vehicles that were being subject to the forces from the detonating explosives. Parameters shown to be important in the blast loading were type of soil, stand off distance (distance from the surface of the soil to the bottom of the target plate), and depth of burial (distance of the charge center of gravity to the sand surface). We conducted over the first year of our work a large number of tests which looked at the impulse being applied to the plates as a function of depth of burial, stand off distance, and type of soil. Of the three parameters we found stand off distance to be most important, depth of burial to be the next most important parameter, with type of soil least important. We also found that impulse could be scaled with explosive size quite accurately and that results (for impulse) were quite repeatable from one test to the next.

Over the last decade new constraints have emerged in the metallurgical industry which challenge the very basis of design and construction of smelters and refineries. The hackneyed designs of the past will not now serve the revised objectives of: - minimal cost of ownership - improved productivity - reduced energy consumption - greater flexibility in feed or product - minimized recycle loops and by-products - more stringent environmental control The impact of these constraints has been channeled constructively into process intensification - exemplified at the large scale by the introduction of flash smelting technology and at the smaller scale by the application of rotary process vessels and converters for augmented heat and mass transfer. The design of successful process plants depends on the understanding of the unit operations and their interactions which is the discipline of systems engineering. With the advent of increased process intensification the importance of a systems approach to process design and implementation becomes paramount. This paper describes the systems approach with specific reference to medium scale projects in the primary and secondary metallurgical industry.

The Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit is located in the Bayhorse mining district about 20 air miles southwest from Challis, Idaho. Cyprus Mines Corporation began exploration on the property in 1968, and at present is in the pre-production stripping phase. Molybdenum mineralization is contained in a late Cretaceous (88 m.y.), composite, biotite granodiorite-quartz monzonite intrusive complex. The complex intruded carbonaceous argillites, causing local silicification and hornfelsing of the sedimentary rocks. The main portion of the orebody is unconformably overlain by up to 1000 ft of Challis volcanic rocks (49 m.y.). Surface mineralization and related rock alteration can be recognized over a 2500- x 8000-ft area extending northwesterly from the discovery outcrop. Molybdenite occurs in a network of subparallel quartz-biotite-muscovite-orthoclase veins and veinlets within the intrusive rocks. The zone of +0.020/0 Mo mineralization outlines a steeply dipping tabular configuration in the main orebody and gradually changes into a hood-shaped configuration along strike to the northwest. The overall grade [ ] of the deposit is controlled by the abundance of the quartz- molybdenite veins and veinlets in the intrusive rock. Very little disseminated mineralization is present, and no economic mineralization occurs in the argillaceous sedimentary rocks. Muscovite, biotite, and orthoclase/microcline define three alteration zones that conform with the overall zone of mineralization. The upper alteration zone contains dominantly muscovite and sericite associated with quartz veins. The central zone contains coarse biotite and locally orthoclase and microcline. Molybdenite is most abundant within this zone. The lower zone contains thin envelopes of orthoclase/microcline around quartz veins. Based on about 313,000 ft of drilling and 8592 ft of underground development work, computer-derived ore reserve calculations indicate 200 million tons averaging 0.1 1% Mo at a 0.050/0 Mo cutoff grade with a waste to ore stripping ratio of about 3:l.

THE origin of various types and groups of ore deposits was some years ago a subject of much controversy. To this statement the copper-nickel deposits near Sudbury afforded no exception. Not since the Report of the Ontario Nickel Commission, in 1917, has there been any serious discussion of the origin of this very important group. This may be because, from the opening-up of Murray mine by the British America Nickel Corporation until the recent work at Frood mine, no new ore-body of importance has been developed in the district. The controversy fifteen or twenty years ago between those who favoured the theory of magmatic segregation, among whom Dr. A. P. Coleman was the leading exponent, and those who considered that most, if not all of the Sudbury deposits could more satisfactorily be accounted for by the theory of replacement, will be remembered by many members of the Institute. Perhaps, as too often happens in controversial discussion, each side tended to overemphasize the importance of those geological phenomena which seemed to be most easily accounted for by the theory it favoured. A more balanced view would perhaps admit that replacement was probably predominant in the formation of most of the offset deposits, and magmatic segregation in that of most of the marginal deposits . But there is danger in generalization. Each body of ore should be studied by itself, and no general conclusion of this kind should be allowed to warp the judgment in making such a study.

Some of the important properties of solid electrolytes that influence the performance of electrochemical oxygen probes are discussed in the first part of this paper. It is shown that accurate and reproducible measurements of oxygen in liquid steel are possible with commercial oxygen probes only if great care is exercised in the make-up of the chemical and phase composition, as well as the microstructure of the solid electrolytes used in these probes. To prove this premise, the second part of this study reports on the results of an experimental evaluation of new commercially available oxygen probe. An evaluation of the solid electrolytes used in this probe indicated that the consistency of the chemical composition, degree of stabilization, and microstructure of the electrolytes used are well controlled. The successful application of this particular oxygen probe under industrial conditions was confirmed. It was also found possible to make reliable and reproducible measurements, with acceptable uncertainty, by proper handling of the probe. Some recommendations are made as to the interpretation of the e.m.f. response curve and the use of the electronic processing unit supplied with the probe.

Contour blasting is commonly performed by employing linear charges decoupled from the boreholes. This method is common in surface and underground excavations, either for civil or mining purposes. To achieve the best results in terms of rock breakage and respect of the excavation profile, blasting theory suggests that charges should be inserted coaxial to the holes to grant uniform distribution of the explosive energy, therefore obtaining a uniform radius of damage. Nonetheless, due to readiness of operations or lack of availability of specific products on the market, non-coaxial charges are often employed in blasting practice. Non-coaxial charging methods include the employ of high-power detonating cord (40 to 100 g/m), low-power detonating cord connecting small-diameter cartridges (commonly 10 g/m detonating cord priming 1” cartridges) or string loading (a thin layer of bulk emulsion pumped with controlled flow and controlled extraction of the injecting rod). This research focuses on evaluating the effects of the first two charging methods on the quality of final walls in open pit and underground operations. Different drilling geometries and charging configurations were applied to both quarrying and tunnelling blasts. The half-cast factor, the overbreak and the underbreak were evaluated as control indicators. Rock quality designation and rock mass rating were used to classify the rock mass. The research was aimed to push contour blasts to their limits, observing for which geometry and charge configuration the blast lost its design threshold with respect to the final wall for every given rock mass. Results show the operational limits of non-coaxial charges encountered in the rock masses object of this study. In good-quality rock, smooth blasting with decoupled linear charge of 40 g/m can be extended to a spacing S = 22Øf with little or no detectable drawbacks in terms of final wall quality, in contrast with theoretical formulae for the determination of the radius of damage. On the other hand, when the rock is poor, any quality of the final wall is hardly achieved at all, in spite of any care in the details of execution of smooth blasting. "Because of its negative environmental effect the attention towards NO emissions increases. This again leads to new demands from the authorities for better surveillance and control of emissions. Earlier and recent industrial measurements towards FeSi- and Si-metal furnaces reveal quite high NO-emission. The NO is believed to be produced in the combustion zone above the furnace surface, mainly as thermal NO.In order to expand the knowledge on NO-formation in silicon metal production, a pilot scale experiment in a 440 kVA silicon furnace has been carried out. The experimental set-up was designed with a view to be able to copy and manipulate the formation mechanisms for NO by controlling the flow of false air into the off-gas system.The resulting NO-values corresponding to the different air inlet to the furnace top, show significantly differences between the different air inlet geometries.IntroductionNOx is the common notion for the two gases nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. Mill relining is a major contributor to overall plant downtime. Reducing the number of mill liner pieces removed from and replaced in the mill has a direct impact on the overall reline time and in turn, mill availability. To improve the mill availability of Ridgeway OperationsÆ 32 foot SAG mill, a number of initiatives were implemented in terms of liner design. These included the conversion of the shell from 40 to 30 rows, reducing the number of pieces from 80 to 60 each shell reline and reducing the number of pieces from 48 to 32 per feed end reline. In addition, modifications were made to the discharge end of the mill to extend the life of the outer pulp lifter and discharge cone, thereby reducing the frequency of change out. The standard radial outer pulp lifter was converted to an angled design. The discharge cone was converted to the BullnoseTM design supplied by Bradken. This paper discusses the design changes made and the expected benefits to the Ridgeway Operations in terms of mill availability improvements.

THE outstanding engineering accomplishment of the last three decades has been the development and application of more and cheaper power and its use instead of the labor of men and animals. Substitution of power for manual labor has taken effect on every hand in the United States. With the aid of energy mechanically available to his hand, one man does the work that only a few years ago required two, three or even a greater number of laborers. The results in respect to the favorable economic effects are well known; namely, increased production, higher wages and lower costs. On the other hand, the vast social effects, both good and bad, have been none the less important, even if less understood and only casually regarded. The chief sources of energy today are the mineral fuels, coal and petroleum. In the United States they yield more than 90 per cent of the total energy demand. Thirty years ago the proportion of energy supplied by the mineral fuels was likewise above 90 per cent, but the division according to origin was very different. These relations. are shown for the years 1900, 1930 and 1950 in Table 1.

THE Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., is unique in this country in that it serves all phases of the iron and steel industries. Through its publications, its meetings, and its sponsorship of new technical developments in the industries, it has proved of great value. The various technical committees of the Division are the nucleus around which this service can be developed. The Blast Furnace and Raw Materials Committee has done excellent work. The need for beneficiation of iron ores is increasing and the economics of this operation are developing more and more in favor of increased activities. Ores that are slightly undergrade should be concentrated up to grade to supplant the present practice of mixing with higher-grade ores to bring up the average composition. Marginal ores that are not now being mined, or that are being mined and piled for future use, should be concentrated. The development of the use of sinter in the blast furnace, because of the elimination of fines, the advantage of better sizing of the charge, the resulting reduction of coke consumption, and increased output of pig iron per furnace, will make concentration and sintering become practical ahead of its natural time.

Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than Vi in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000. THE building stone of the Crab Orchard District is a fine-grained, thin-bedded sandstone which is so strongly cemented by silica that it may be classed as quartzite. As used in this paper the term building stone includes dimension stone, rubble, ashlar, flagstone, and rough broken stone. The Crab Orchard District is in the central portion of Cumberland County, Tenn. It is named from the town of Crab Orchard near which the stone was quarried first for industrial use. The heart of the district is an area of some 1200 acres from 1 to 3 miles east of Crossville which is 70 miles west of . Knoxville and 125 miles east of Nashville (fig. 1). At the present time, there are about 15 quarries worked by companies and individuals. Geology: The Crab Orchard District is on the Cumberland Plateau, or Cumberland Mountain as it is called frequently. Most of the area is characterized by a comparatively even surface from 1800 to 2000 ft in elevation and is drained by streams flowing into the Tennessee River. Included in the district are two quarries located 7 miles west of Cross-ville and this area is drained by tributaries of the Cumberland River. Most of the quarries are located near the 1800-ft contour which is just below the general upland surface. The surface rock over most of the district is the Rockcastle sandstone which has a thickness of about 260 ft.1 It is the topmost of the six formations of

"The West Toronto Diamond project, under construction since 2006 and due to be complete in 2015, is a rail-to-rail grade separation project in the heart of urban Toronto. Once complete, a depressed corridor over 1000 metres long will take the CN tracks beneath the CPR tracks. An interlocking steel pile wall serves to retain ground and cut off groundwater. Remedial measures, constructed using jet grouting, were required at several locations within and behind the steel piles.At mechanical interlock joints damaged or suspected of being damaged, jet grouting was used to improve native soils on the retained side of the wall to reduce permeability of the soil mass in intimate contact with the joints to 10-7 cm/s. At a number of steel piles where groundwater and soil type combined to cause basal instability inside the pipes during the interim between excavation and concreting, jet grouting was used to construct temporary bottom seals. At locations near adjacent structures where the steel pile installation process resulted in disturbed ground on the retained side of the wall, jet grouting was used to strengthen and stabilize ground.This paper outlines the details of the various jet grouting applications, the respective testing programs implemented to demonstrate in situ permeability and strength of the soil-grout matrix, and performance of the constructed system.INTRODUCTIONThe West Toronto Diamond (WTD) is a junction of several railway lines, all intersecting at the same grade (Figure 1). A major grade separation project at this site commenced in 2006 and is scheduled to be completed in 2015. The whole of the work is comprised of multiple contracts, completed and/or ongoing, by different constructors. Once completed, a depressed corridor over 1000 metres long with over 23,500 m2 (face area) of retained earth will bring the CN tracks beneath the CPR tracks and eliminate a major bottleneck at the most heavily used rail crossing in Canada."

During the Centennial year some of our leading geologists in the United States and Canada conceived the happy thought of calling an International Congress of Geologists for the purpose of agreeing upon such important though subsidiary matters as the colors by means of which the different geological formations should be expressed ; the terms that should be applied respectively to these formations; and also upon the far more important problem of the limits and values of these different formations. The first session of this Congress was held in Paris in 1878, the second session in Bologna in 1881, and the third session in Berlin in 1884. The third session found the preliminary difficulties so far cleared away that some definite and tangible results could be attained. After a great deal of free discussion had taken place at Paris and Bologna, during which every one's views were listened to with attention; and a great deal more painstaking scientific work had been accomplished by the International Committees, having before them the objects of unifying the nomenclature of the science, and of preparing a scheme of colors between the second and third sessions of the Congress; and after the provisional results had been subjected to a searching criticism by the Congress in Berlin; it was decided to make an attempt to embody these provisional results in some work which should include as many as possible of the difficulties to
