INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits of Salmo map-area (Figure 1) have aroused the interest of prospectors for more than a half-century. Properties within the map-area have produced lead, zinc, silver, tungsten, and gold. Sheep Creek mining camp ranks fifth in the Province in the total production of gold, but during recent years interest has been concentrated upon base metals, and meticulous prospecting and exploration have resulted in the discovery of many large zinc-lead orebodies. PREVIOUS WORK Geological investigations of the region were begun long ago, and it is interesting to trace the development of ideas with our increasing knowledge of the geology of this complex area. The first geological examination of the rocks of Salmo map-area was made in 1859-60 by H. Bauerman (1), who was employed as geologist accompanying the first international Boundary Survey. Bauerman examined the rocks exposed along Pend d'Oreille river and published a section indicating that the sedimentary rocks are probably of Palaeozoic age, and are intruded by granite of unknown age. McConnell and Brock(2), in 1894 - 1900, carried out the reconnaissance mapping of the West Kootenay Sheet, on which they outlined the Mesozoic rocks of the Rossland Beaver Mountain volcanic groups that they believed rested unconformably upon the sedimentary rocks to the southeast, which they regarded as of Palaeozoic age.

I was asked by the chairman of one of the Sessions on Employment Problems to talk about the viewpoint of the foreign workingman. I am not a workingman. I have never done what a work-hand might call an honest day's labor; that is, I have never been in a factory or manufacturing plant or in a mine, though in truth, hard work and I are well acquainted. I was a soldier, am an engineer, have long been actively interested in the most important waterway construction in the near East, have served politics and diplomacy, written books and lectured at universities. My knowledge of the foreign workingman in this country comes from the fact that my own compatriots here at various times came to me and appealed for advice and help, and last year I was asked by the employment manager of a corporation to undertake a welfare job at one of their plants. I went out, saw the plant, talked with the superintendent and outlined certain of my ideas which he personally heartily approved, but which did not find favor with those higher up. I approach the subject of the foreign workman's point of view with the understanding that the industrial employer's effort is for the maximum of efficiency. I am conversant with labor conditions abroad both in industry and agriculture. What I have learned of industrial conditions in America as they affect the foreign immigrant has been chiefly gathered from the cases referred to of foreign workmen who from time to time have come to me with their troubles. In the course of those investigations, in order to give whatever help or advice was possible, I have been impressed with the fact that the great United States industries evidently had not yet sufficiently recognized the value of studying the conditions of the workingman in the lands of his origin across the seas. A careful study of that which could be called the moral element in connection with its foreign labor would give industry a knowledge of the man's reason for coming, what grievances he brings with him, his hopes for a future, and the peculiar character of his capacities. The employer would thereby be enabled to meet the man, to be helpful to him, to aid him and at the same time promote industrial efficiency, inasmuch as a workman who believes that he is being dealt with humanly and squarely is contented and satisfied and will give willingly, and even with pride, the best that is in him; justice and a 'air deal is all the man wants.

The iron-ore deposits worked by this Company occur in lenses 200 to 1000 feet long and 5 to 80 feet wide, and stand at an angle of from 65' to 75, with a vertical height of 250 to 500 feet, other lenses occurring below. A number of the deposits were first worked as open pits, which in some cases were carried to the depth of 150 feet, when, owing to the weakness of the walls, underground mining was adopted. While the ore was being removed from the open pit, shafts mere in several instances sunk into the foot-wall, the intention being to mine the ore with breast-stopes of an approximate height of 20 feet, followed by underhand-stopes of the same height, leaving floors between of the necessary thickness to support the walls, or to effect the removal of the ore by means of what is known as the stall system. As the work progressed, however, it was found that the walls (which are of chlorite) were too weak to permit the working of breast-stopes 20 feet high, there being frequent heavy falls of ground from the hanging and, in some instances, from the foot. The plan of following breast-stopes with underhand-stopes was, therefore, abandoned. By working breast-stopes only, but little more than one-half of the ore could be removed, and that only at an excessive cost, the ore being so hard that power-drills with 3 1/8-inch pistons . and 6-inch stroke, working under 60 pounds of compressed air, are able to drill but 8 feet in ten hours as a yearly average, while from 6 inches to 2 feet is a common result of ten hours' drilling. It was plain that some other system of mining must be adopted, and it was proposed to sink by levels of 75 feet, carrying in the cross-cuts from the shafts and working out the ore each way from the shaft from foot to hanging, and from 15 to 20 feet in height. Abstract of an address delivered before the Royal Canadian Institute, Toronto, April 16, briefly outlining the importance of mining in the United States, in Canada, and in the world. Comparison is made of the mineral production for 1886, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1929, showing that in the 43 years from 1886 to 1929 that of the world increased nearly tenfold, of the United States over twelvefold and of Canada thirtyfold, but that Canada's output was equivalent to only 2 per cent of the world total and to 5 per cent of that of the United States in 1929. Statistical tables and graphs show value of production, percentage of world production contributed by Canada and the United States, etc. The mining situation in Canada is briefly reviewed: only those American engineers who have had occasion to examine the figures appreciate the rapidity of growth of Canadian mineral production. The treatment of minerals involves vast complex industries. When we are producing, say, 6 billion annually, the employment of 2 million workers provides indirect support to perhaps 10 million people. Exploiting mineral deposits is peculiar in certain ways, for the deposits are exhaustible, are of rare occurrence when measured in terms of outcrop area compared to total earth area, and may suddenly be handicapped or superseded by new discoveries; moreover, the economic position of the contained metals is 'affected by the use of scrap metal and the existence of invisible stocks. The largest and most valuable of the mineral deposits are not the metals, but rather the fuels. Magmatic-hydrothermal activity in the South-West Pacific and SE Asian island arcs during the Tertiary has created a premier copper-gold province with numerous, commercially attractive base and precious metal deposits. This activity continues to the present day, especially in submarine sectors of those arcs where modern technologies enable direct observation of ore-forming processes in action. Until recently, however, the volcanic island arcs of Indonesia escaped such attention. The Indonesia-Australia Survey for Submarine Hydrothermal Activity (IASSHA), involved three cruises with KR Baruna Jaya VIII, focused particularly on the Sangihe arc; Tomini Bay, Sulawesi, including the vicinity of isolated Colo volcano; and the Sunda Strait including the neighborhood of Krakatau volcano. IASSHA 2001 and 2003 cruises studied the arc and behind-arc sectors of the Sangihe volcanic island chain extending northwards from Quaternary volcanoes on the northeastern tip of Sulawesi, near Manado, to the Kawio Islands near the border with the Philippines (Fig. 1). This chain lies above a west-dipping Wadati-Benioff seismic zone whose subduction trench is obscured by accreted sediments and mélange, forming the Talaud-Mayu ridge. West of the main active chain and extending northwards from Manado there is a subparallel ridge (The Manado Line) surmounted by a number of high (>2000 m) seamounts of uncertain age.

The solvent extraction separation of nickel, cobalt and their associated metals have been considered for industrial application since the early 1960's. This review of the solvent extraction processes is limited to the industrial applications, pilot plant and the more extensive bench scale studies reported in the literature. The processes with their significant chemical and technological contributions are discussed in detail whenever the information are available. The application of solvent extraction to the nickel-cobalt processing has so far been limited to the secondary separation of nickel-cobalt containing feedstocks derived from other primary nickel-cobalt separation methods.

The Millenbach copper-zinc orebody is an ideal Canadian example of a stratabound base metal deposit in volcanic rocks. The mine, operated by Lake Dufault Divison, Falconbridge Copper Ltd. is located five miles north of the city of Noranda in northwestern Quebec. The deposit occurs within an Archean volcanic sequence which forms part of regional acidic volcanic center within the Abitibi greenstone belt. Preproduction ore reserves totalled 2,075,000 tons grading 3.5% copper, 3.6% zinc, 1.1 ounces per ton silver, and 0.02 ounces per ton gold. Stratabound lenses of massive sulphides together with underlying stringer sulphides are closely associated with a dome of quartz-feldspar porphyritic rhyolite approximately 3000 feet below surface. The paper describes the presently known geology of the deposit and includes documentation of sulphide mineralogy and textures as well as sulphide/ host rock relationships. The stratigraphy, petrography and chemistry of the volcanic host rocks are described with emphasis on the alteration intimately associated with the sulphide bodies. Although the volcanic stratigraphy is complex within the mine area, the presence of only low-grade metamorphism and the relative lack of structural deformation allow detailed interpretation of geological history. Presently recognized evidence strongly suggests that the sulphides were deposited at and near sea-floor, by hydrothermal solutions. The dome of porphyritic rhyolite appears to have been the most significant factor controlling sulphide localization.

The analysis of the results of metallurgical experiments is often complicated by experimental errors and uncertainty, the complexity of the system being studied, and the confusion of correlation with causation. Consequently, comparative statistics are used to determine if a difference exists between the outcomes of tests, an estimate of this difference, and the precision of the estimate. This paper reviews the use of significance tests and confidence intervals for the comparison of results from two tests, the use of reference distributions, and blocking and randomization techniques to reduce unavoidable sources of variability. These techniques are demonstrated using plant and laboratory data.

"This study applies the concept of the difficulty of tunnelling by drilling an blasting (D&B) to selectedcases from the Brazilian tunnelling industry. The difficulty of tunnelling has been defined in previouswork as the difference of specific drilling (SD) from industrial average trend: easier when SD is lowerthan average, more difficult when SD is higher than average. Results show how tunnels in Brazil tend tobe unrealistically more difficult to excavate when compared to similar excavations in similar geologies elsewhere in the world. It is thoroughly discussed the reason for such anomaly (up to +90% SD compared to industrial average). One reason could be the lack of options amongst explosive products on the brazilian market. Only ANFO and explosive emulsions are available in Brazil. Lacking high VOD(Velocity of Detonation) products might result in reducing the maximum allowable burden amongstproduction holes, therefore increasing SD. Another reason could be found in the tunnel designers’tendency of choosing D&B as excavation method for weak rock masses that would benefit from mechanical excavation. The reason to this tendency can be partly found in the lack of availability of mechanical excavation machines in the brazilian market. Blasting in weak rock masses requires more careful smooth blasting, hence a closer spacing amongst contour holes to avoid costly overbreak: this increases SD. A third reason could be found in the lack of skill amongst the local workforce. When dealing with unskilled workers the blast designers naturally tend to avoid highly optimized blasts thatrequire very skilled workforce to be realized on field. The designer in this case tends to leave the blastdesign simpler but more robust, at the cost of higher specific drilling and specific charge. The conclusions suggest that this unrealistic difficulty when compared to world average could be a simptom of the so-called “Brazilian cost” within the tunnelling industry."

The application of the ?electro-hydrodynamic effect? (EHDE) to civil engineering has been made in the construction of drilled piles. Equipment for the commercial application of this process was developed in Russia in the late 1980's. The process is approved for general use by the Russian Federation building code and numerous projects have been successfully completed with this technique. EHDE is a process by which a moderately powerful shockwave is released in the bottom of a drill hole filled wet concrete slurry. The energy is carried outward through the fluid with minimal loss because it is an incompressible medium. Repetitive discharges provides a series of energy pulses which will compact the soil along the pile shaft and at base of the pile. The process is analogous to repeated applications of low energy blast densification or to dynamic compaction. In general, the process is not depth dependent. Repeated application of this treatment in a drilled pile hole can increase soil density at the base and along the shaft of the pile, as desired. The overall result is that the geotechnical capacity can be improved significantly. Test results documenting improvements are presented and other applications considered.

THE Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. began to produce bismuth at the Oroya smelter in 1929, at which time the only important consumption of that metal was in the manufacture, of pharmaceutical compounds, and the normal supply of metal exceeded the demand. With a new and major producer entering the field, additional uses for bismuth had to be developed. A survey indicated that the most promising opportunity lay in fusible alloys containing bismuth. A large number of bismuth alloys were known and a few of them were being used in the manufacture of automatic sprinkler heads and safety plugs. The literature cover in,- the- alloys was found to be sketchy and contradictory. Research, development, and educational work carrried on by the Corporation during the past fifteen years has resulted in greatly enlarged uses for the metal. The reasons for choosing autogenous grinding for the new Warrego concentrator of Peko Mines N.L. are discussed and the ores to be treated in the concentrator are described. The mill was designed on the basis of pilot tests carried out at Cobar and the performance of the mill has been most satisfactory both in its metallurgical and mechanical aspects. An empirical technique has been developed to predict mill performance for change in feed rate or feed size and a mathematical model of the mill is being developed for simulation and control work. The weight and size distribution of the mill load was determined at one set of operating conditions for use in the mill model.

A recent study by the New York Trap Rock Corporation has conclusively determined that the number of blasting complaints is directly related to the noise produced by the blast. In turn it has been known for some years that the noise produced by the blast is directly related to atmospheric structure of temperature, wind, and humidity in the vertical direction. Normally during daylight hours the temperature decreases with altitude at the rate of about five and one half degrees per thousand feet on a sunny day, and to somewhat lesser amounts on cloudy days. Consequently, sound travels slower with altitude because of the lower temperature, and the sound rays tend to bend skyward, and are soon dispersed in the atmosphere. Quite frequently, however, the temperature increases with altitude, and just the opposite effect is attained. That is sound rays are bent downward, and sometimes reach the ground with intensities approaching that at the source. When the temperature increases with altitude a temperature inversion is said to exist. Less frequently than these two atmospheric conditions a condition is observed where temperature remains constant with altitude. This is called an isothermal atmospheric condition, and sound passing through this type of atmosphere tends to travel in straight lines, neither bending upward nor downward. The sound will be greater than normal near the blast, but will dissipate rapidly with distance from the blast site with no zone or zones of silence.

This paper describes the technical development of the Newman beneficiation plant over its 23 years of operation and how this development relates to the mine ore reserves of high-grade and low-grade ore. It also discusses the importance of the beneficiation product grades in the overall blending of shippable products from a range of mines to optimise overall ore resource utilisation. Also discussed is the importance of the ore reserve reconciliations in resource utilisation. Data is provided on the capacity and quality improvement results of the plant upgrade, carried out in 1999. This shows how the original capacity upgrade targets have been exceeded and the additional quality benefits that have been obtained from this capacity.

The use of explosives to create special effects in the film industry is a well-known past time. A recent production required simulation of a large scale water splash from the effect of a statue falling from a cliff edge and impacting on an open body of water. This was to be achieved through the use of precisely delayed explosions detonated near the surface of the water. A survey of the area revealed a breeding farm for sea bass approximately 250 metres (273 yards) from the intended blast area. It was initially thought that the water pressures produced for the detonation of the explosives may cause harm to the fish. Much work has been carried out over the past few decades on the effect of open water blasting and its effects on aquatic wildlife; this includes water pressure modelling techniques which can be used as predictive tools.

The most recent modernization phase of the wire rod mill at Sterling Steel involved installation of a pre-finishing mill, using a Morgan Vee Mini-Block, a new water box and shear with utility systems and automation. The new mill configuration adds more stands to the mill for better drafting and is designed to improve finished product quality by providing a more uniform entry temperature, better control of the feed section into the No-Twist® mill as well as enhanced surface quality. The new shear improves cut length accuracy as well as decreases the amount of trimming to reduce yield loss. This paper explains the changes made in the mill and the features of the new equipment and automation.

The MIDAS project is funded by the European Commission (DG Research) and began on the 1st November 2013. The project will investigate the environmental impact of deep-sea mineral and energy extraction: specifically, polymetallic sulphides, manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and the potential mining of rare earth elements. As deep-sea mining becomes ever closer, and the International Seabed Authority begins to develop its regulatory framework for exploitation of deep-sea minerals, MIDAS is well timed to provide fundamental scientific information. The MIDAS partnership represents a unique combination of scientists, industry, social scientists, legal experts, nongovernmental organisations and small and medium enterprises. MIDAS is carrying out research into the nature and scales of the potential impacts of mining including 1) physical disturbance of the seabed by mining, the creation of mine tailings; 2) the potential effects of particle-laden plumes in the water column, and 3) the possible toxic chemicals that might be released by the mining process. Key biological unknowns, such as connectivity between populations, impacts of the loss of biological diversity on ecosystem functioning, and how quickly the ecosystems will recover will all be addressed. The plan is to use this information to aid development of recommendations for best practice in the mining industry. A key component is the involvement of industry within the project and through stakeholder engagements to find feasible solutions. The project will work closely with European and international regulatory organisations to take these recommendations forward into legislation. A major element of MIDAS will be to develop methods and technologies for 1) preparing baseline assessments of biodiversity, and 2) monitoring activities remotely in the deep sea during and after exploitation, including ecosystem recovery. To carry out this work MIDAS is conducting a number of research cruises to examine the above issues at potential sites for exploitation of SMS and nodule deposits. This talk will present some of the recent findings of the project.

"On August 3, 1888, German Patent No. 43977 entitled ""A Process for the Production of Aluminum Hydroxide"" was issued*. The discovery which led to the patent was made by the Austrian chemist Karl Josef Bayer (1847-1904) (Fig. 1) who was at that time in Russia, and the process became known as the Bayer Process in his honour(1)(2)- The process imediately achieved industrial success, displacing the pyrometallurgical process that had been used until that time to produce alumina. The Bayer Process involved the pressure leaching of bauxite with NaOH solution to obtain sodium aluminate solution from which aluminum hydroxide was precipitated by seeding. Today bauxite is not only the principal source of aluminum but also of gallium, both metals being effectively recovered by the Bayer Process. The purpose of this paper is to outline the historical background of this discovery and its importance to hydrometallurgy."

On August 3, 1977 the 95th Congress passed Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This Act created the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), which was given the responsibility of formulating regulations to implement the Act. This paper explains the rationale behind the specific provisions of the final blasting regulations, which were published in volume 44, No. 50 of the Federal Register, dated March 13, 1979. The major items covered by the regulations include preblasting surveys, blasting schedules, protection of the public, ground vibration limits, the scaled distance equation, airblast limits, blasting procedures, and record keeping. The regulations are designed to protect the safety and well-being of the public and to protect buildings and structures such as wells, pipelines, and storage facilities from damage.

In May 1975 the U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center to develop a Hydrominer modification to a longwall shearer unit, wherein the rotating pick-laced drums and connecting gear drives are replaced by a water jet cutting ahead.1 The concept of the water jet cutting head is based on using the high localized energy of the water jets to isolate a slice of coal by cutting a slot under, at the back of, and at the top of the web. The plow blade of the head then advances into the cut and wedges the coal cantilever over onto the conveyor (Fig. 1).
