Farming on bauxite residue using screw propelled equipment (SPE) has been commonly practised to accelerate dewatering and as it promotes consolidation and enhances storage capacity. However, it is unclear when and how often farming should be conducted during the transition of bauxite residue from slurry to dry solids and how deep each slurry deposition should be. To address this issue, three desiccation tanks were established in the laboratory to investigate how much farming could enhance the desiccation and consolidation of tailings. The cuboid tanks, of 350 mm in height and 300 mm in width and length and with an opening on the top, were placed on load cells to monitor the water loss during desiccation and were instrumented with moisture and suction sensors designed and developed at the University of Queensland to measure the water content profile of the residue. The bauxite residue, composed of silt-size particles with low plasticity, was hydraulically deposited in the tanks as a slurry at 27% solid content, resulting in 100 mm depth of solid material settling. Evaporation was enhanced by placing two identical electrical fans above the tanks. Two phases were conducted. In the first phase, the two tanks were left untouched for evaluating non farmed conditions and for calibrating sensors, while in the second phase, three tanks were subjected to atemporal farming using purpose-built screw propelled equipment. The experiment was terminated when the residue was completely desiccated. This paper reports on the instrumented tank set-up and the results obtained to date.

THIS question having been repeatedly raised, and particularly revived in a discussion at the last meeting of the Institute, I beg to submit the following remarks, based partly upon personal experience, partly upon the results of large works in Europe, establishing, years ago, the practicability of certain methods, which may therefore be considered to have passed the stage of mere experiment. Before entering upon the merits of one system or the other, it is indispensable to lay down some recognized principles, which ought to serve as guides, in arriving at fair judgments in questions of this character. In a profession like that of mining, locally so much influenced by combinations of circumstances too various to mention, it is difficult to do more than lay down the main features of a system based upon general laws and recognized facts, leaving the details to the sound judgment and experience of the engineer, who, by virtue of his education, ought to be able to make such choice and such modifications in the plans of a mine as the particular case demands. Mineral resources, in some countries the sole property of the owner of the soil, in others controlled by the strong hand of a government, are nevertheless a gift of nature, in which, indirectly, the whole of the human race has as real an interest as the immediate owner himself. Introduction Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock-fragmentation mechanism of continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting-drum rotational speed. This paper presents a discussion of the effects of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation. The removal of rock ridges/walls between adjacent grooves is analyzed with three hits mounted simultaneously on the cutting head, while the bit tip angle was varied from 600 to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 25.4 to 50.8 mm (1 to 2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dusts generated during the course of the experiments were analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism of continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. A review of the literature revealed that a considerable amount of research has been carried out on rockcutting processes. Many authors agree that the mechanical cutting efficiencies of mining machines (e.g., continuous miners, shearers and road headers) are affected by a host of parameters. Some of these parameters are machine controlled, some are operator controlled, while others are uncontrollable. Efforts were focused on understanding the influence of parameters such as bit spacing, cutting depth, attack angle, bit type, drum speed, bit geometry (i.e., tip size, shape and tip angle) and rock type on the cutting process efficiency in terms of specific energy consumption and respirable dust generation (Strehig?? et al., 1975, Hanson et al., 1979, Khair et al., 1989). Roepke et al. (1976) in an attempt to study the dust and energy generated during coal cutting using point attack bits found that the dust and the specific energy consumed both decrease as the depth of cut increases. The four fundamental stages of dust generation luring rock fragmentation are identified by Zipf and Bieniawski (1989). Coal breakage by various types of wedges was assessed by Evans and Pomeroy (1966) in an extensive experimental study on British coals. Yet the industry today requires further attention and guidance to optimize the energy consumption and dust generation during the rockbreakage process. This paper attempts to give a better understanding of the influence of some of the parameters listed above and focuses on further improvement in the rock-cutting process. The specific energy consumed for different types of bits used and the respirable dust generated are analyzed in the context of the variation of a few other parameters. Laboratory investigation The experiments were performed in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories located at West Virginia University. A rock-cutting simulator designed and fabricated by Khair (1984) was utilized for this purpose. The details of this machine are available in the literature (see Khair 1984). For this study, a series of preliminary experiments was carried out to determine the optimum cutting frame advance speed. This was intended to facilitate a maximum cut depth of 31.75 mm (1.25 in.) at an advance rate of 0.525 mm/s (0.0207 ips) for all types of bits being used and various bit spacings being considered. To look into the cutting-process efficiency of a continuous miner in the laboratory, several parameters of influence are being considered. Besides the bit-geometry parameters, machine- and operator-controlled parameters, such as spacing of bits on the cutting head, the cutting head rotational speed and the total cutting depth during an experiment, are varied. At the time this paper was written, only part of the completed experiments were ana¬lyzed, and a number of experiments were still being carried out following an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental plan to assess the effect of all of the above¬mentioned parameters on the cutting efficiency in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. he leaching behavior of palladium in ammoniacal solutions has been investigated by using the rotating disk technique in an autoclave. The study included the effect of rotating speed, temperature, oxygen pressure, composition of ammoniacal solutions, and catalyst on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was discussed in view of the thermodynamics and a kinetic model. Even though the potential-pH diagram suggests that palladium metal can dissolve in ammoniacal solutions at room temperature, it was found that the dissolution was too slow at temperatures below 100°C but was significantly improved at higher temperatures. It was also found that the rotating speed of palladium disk had no effect on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy was found to be 69.7 kJ/mole. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the dissolution of palladium is controlled by chemical reaction.

"Uranium deposits in the Rabbit Lake-Collins Bay area are associated with the sub-Athabasca unconformity which separates crystalline Archean or Aphebian basement rocks from Helikian clastic sedimentary rocks of the Athabasca Group. The basement rocks are a part of Wollaston lithostructural domain.Most of the high grade deposits, such as Collins Bay ‘A’ and 'B' Zones and Eagle Point are associated with altered rocks of the basal unit of the Wollaston Group. Some deposits, such as Raven and Horseshoe are confined to the uppermost unit of this Group. The Rabbit Lake deposit occurs in the middle, meta-arkose unit of the sequence. Locations of some deposits (Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay ‘A’ and 'B' Zones) are also controlled by thrust faults, such as Rabbit Lake Fault and Collins Bay Fault.The deposits contain either monometallic (uranium) mineralization (Rabbit Lake, Raven, Horseshoe) or polymetallic (mainly uranium-nickel) assemblages (Collins Bay “A’ and 'B' Zones).IntroductionThe Athabasca Basin region, a part of the Churchill Geological Province of the Canadian Shield, is composed of Archean and Aphebian crystalline basement and younger, Helikian, unmetamorphosed supracrustal rocks. The Rabbit Lake-Collins Bay area is situated at the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin region, which hosts a substantial proportion of Canadian uranium resources.The crystalline basement complex was subdivided by Lewry and Sibbald (1979) into lithostructural domains and these domains were grouped into major crustal units designated, from northwest to southeast, as Western Craton, Cree Lake Mobile Zone, consisting of Wollaston, Mudjatic and Virgin River domains, and Rottenstone Complex (Fig. 1)."

The torsion test is considered as the best test used when the part is subjected to static or dynamic torque. Many published papers have investigated the torsion of non-heat treated metals. However, very few published papers dealt with the torsion behaviour of heat treated metals. The aim of this work was to study the effect of heat treatment on the torsion behaviour of steel alloy (AISI 01), which can be used for manufacturing small and medium drills, taps and reamers. The diameter of specimens used was 15 mm. The metal used was heat treated under different conditions, then torsionally tested. The results of torsion test were divided into two groups: results obtained during elastic limit from which the shear stress, shear strain and modulus of rigidity were calculated, while from the results obtained during plastic limit the plastic depth was calculated by applying derived equation when the angle of twist was more than yield value. The results obtained indicated that the value of hardness alone is not sufficient to establish heat treatment conditions. Rather, it was found that the determination of plastic depth together with hardness can help in the establishing of the optimum condition which was hardening temperature of 820¦C, hardening time 20 minutes and tempering temperature 220¦C. This condition produces hardness of 60 HRc and plastic depth of 2.5 mm.

Several classes of commercial explosives and blasting agents behave non-ideally, especially in diameters near their critical diameter. A direct and convenient measure of non-ideal behavior is the detonation velocity (VOD); if the VOD is less than the ideal value, usually obtained by calculation, then the explosive is detonating in the non-ideal mode. Such lowering of the VOD is usually due to both lateral loss of energy and post-CJ release of energy. The second of these factors, namely slow release of chemical energy, is of most interest in blasting. While the observation of a low VOD clearly suggests slow reaction of part of the explosive composition, it does not necessarily mean that the energy is lost to the overall rock-breaking process. The partition of the energy of the explosive into various useful and wasteful categories is considered. Simple models of energy partition in blasting, and of explosive reaction kinetics, are presented. The models consider the effect of explosive type and rock type, the explosive being described in terms of the most common phases namely liquid, air bubbles, porous ammonium nitrate, dense or crystalline ammonium nitrate, and aluminum. Over a range of combinations of the above phases, the model predicts reasonable critical diameters and VOD's. Results are presented which show the effects of non-ideal detonation on fragmentation and heave in different rock types. Conclusions are drawn about those blasting conditions in which ideal behavior is beneficial, or Disadvantageous.

THE following pages c9ntain a brief description of the processes involved in the manufacture of silica brick at the Sydney plant of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. Silica brick manufacture was commenced at Sydney in 1918, for the purpose of supplying the requirements of the steel plant, where about three million silica bricks were used annually. Previous to that date, all silica refractories were brought to Sydney from American sources and were subject to a freight cost of nine dollars per ton, or about twenty-seven dollars per thousand. As a preliminary step to manufacture, a thorough investigation of all possible sources of silica in the vicinity of Sydney was carried on during 1916 and 1917. ?Eighteen separate deposits were examined. Of this number, only four were found suitable for brick making, and the Leitches Creek silica, being the nearest of these four deposits to Sydney, was selected as the raw material for the proposed plant. CRYSTAL MODIFICATIONS OF SILICA A brief review of the silica minerals may serve to indicate why careful investigation of sources of supply is necessary before actual brick-making is attempted. The crystal modifications of silica, i.e., quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite, all possessing alpha and beta phases, play a most important part in determining the suitability or otherwise of the resulting brick. By heat treatment, any one of these forms of silica may be converted to either of the others. The inversion temperatures (after Fenner) in degrees Centigrade are shown on rage 160.

MANGANESE has long been considered one of the United States' most important strategic raw materials. Its indispensability in steel manufacture makes it vital to the nation's industrial life. Coupled with this indispensability is the fact that domestic producers have not been able as yet to supply more than a small part of the nation's manganese needs; consequently the United States has had to depend upon such distant foreign sources as the U.S.S.R., British India, the African Gold Coast and Brazil for the major portion of its ore. The great bulk of the mineral is consumed in the form of ferromanganese, an alloy that averages 8o per cent manganese and 20 per cent mainly iron and carbon. Manganese is used as a deoxidizer and desulphurizer in steel manufacture. By combination with the residual oxygen and sulphur of the bath, it helps to produce a clean, sound metal. Approximately 14 lb. of manganese, it is estimated, is used in making one ton of steel. For standard-grade ferromanganese, the ore should have a minimum of about 48 per cent Mn and preferably more. Beneficiation methods have not yet been developed for making the immense low-grade deposits in the United States salable at prevailing prices. Dependence upon foreign sources thrust the United States into serious difficulties during the World War. At the start of hostilities in 1914, the nation was obtaining about four-fifths of its ore from the Eastern Hemisphere. Domestic production had been negligible, amounting to only 3000 to 7000 tons a year. As the war continued, shipments from the East, endangered by sea attack and blockade, dwindled rapidly. Imports from Brazil mounted. In this grave emergency, the United States, starting almost from scratch and under the stimulus of high prices, succeeded by 1918 in producing a peak of 311,000 tons, about 3 5 per cent of its consumption that year. Since the war, the United States has depended upon foreign sources for more than nine-tenths of its high-grade ore. During 1936, 1937 and 1938, imports for consumption averaged 736,000 tons a year. During the same period, domestic shipments averaged 21,000 tons a year. Of the imports, the U.S.S.R. accounted for an annual average of 280,000 tons, the Gold Coast 208,000 tons, India 74,000 tons, and Brazil 72,500 tons. But India and Brazil, which in 1936 ranked third and fourth in the list of importers, were displaced in 1937 and 1938 by a new and much nearer source-Cuba. From less than 1 per cent of United States imports in 1931, the island republic increased its shipments to more than 27 per cent in 1938. Cuba's average for this three-year period was 97,000 tons, and its total for 1938 was 131,000 tons.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the development of the world potash industry. The trends leading to the present market situation of oversupply arid low prices, which threaten; the domestic potash industry, are presented and analyzed. Because the major threat to the domestic industry comes from Canadian imports, the report focuses on the comparative economics of United States and Canadian production. The study resulted in these major conclusions: 1. Balance of world supply and demand is foreseeable in 1975, but it could be delayed by planned expansion. 2. Balance of U.S. supply and demand could occur as early as 1974-75 or as late as 1981. 3. Nearly all U. S. production capacity vis-a-vis Canadian competition is now uneconomic. Prices cover out-of -pocket costs for only 30 percent of U.S. production. 4. U.S. producers will be undersold by Canadians in 60 to 90 percent of the U.S. market. Canadians also will have the edge over United States and European producers in export markets. 5. U.S. firms have invested in 60 percent of the planned 1971 Canadian production, and they have large holdings in Saskatchewan. 6. The decline in the U.S. potash industry probably reduced personal income in Carlsbad, Eddy County, N. Mex, the chief potash-producing area in the United States, about $21.5 million between 1966 and 1969.

"The adsorption of collector on bornite has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), adsorbs strongly on bornite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. This adsorption mechanism is very similar to the one obtained with chalcocite/xanthate system. However, the result also clearly shows that the adsorption of xanthate on bornite is totally different from its adsorption on chalcopyrite, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. The obtained AFM images also showed that the adsorption increases with increasing the collector’s concentration. When Cytec Aerofloat 238, a dialkyl dithiophosphate collector, is used, it adsorb on bornite mainly in the form of an oily substance, which can be rinsed off mineral surface by flushing with ethanol alcohol. AFM images also show that the adsorption of Cytec Aerofloat 238 increases with increasing the adsorption time. INTRODUCTION The adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process to achieve a satisfying recovery. Historically, many works have been carried out to clarify the adsorption mechanism of collectors on sulfides. (Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936, Poling and Leja, 1963; Allison et al., 1972, Fuerstenau, 1982; Leja, 1982; Woods, 1984) Compared to other copper minerals such as chalcopyrite and chalcocite, much less work has been done to study the adsorption collector on bornite. Allison et al. (1972) studied the reaction products of various sulfide minerals with xanthate solutions and reported that the measured rest potential of bornite in 6.25×10-4 M KEX solution at pH 7 was +60 mV and the reaction product of PAX on bornite was cuprous alkyl xanthate. Mielczarski and Suoninen (1984a, 1984b) applied the XPS and studied the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on cuprous sulfide. It was reported that there was a relatively rapid formation of a well-oriented monolayer of xanthate ions followed by a slow growth of disordered cuprous xanthate molecules on top of this layer. Buckley et al. (1984) investigated the surface oxidation of bornite by linear potential sweep voltammetry and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and proposed the adsorption products on bornite depended on the solution potential. Zachwieja et al. (1987) studied the electrochemical flotation of the bornite-ethylxanthate system and reported that KEX reacted with bornite through an electrochemical oxidation reaction forming cuprous xanthate between -0.4 and -0.2v (SCE). Hangone et al. (2005) studied the flotation of a bornite-rich copper sulfide ore using thio collectors and their mixtures and reported that the highest copper recoveries were obtained with the diethyl dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP)."

The basic cement making process is outlined relative to the fuel but chemically sensitive suspension preheater (SP) kiln which made its debut in the early 50s. The SP history is trailed through the process disasters of the late 50s; identification of chemical sensitivities in the 60s; and resurgence of the SP together with development of its stepchild process, the precalciner (PC) kiln, in the 70s. The current energy problem and related conversions to coal re-emphasize the process chemical sensitivity. Attention is focused on the basic problem of coal sulfur and ash variations and several solutions are presented.

The Balsam Meadow Hydroelectric Project is currently under construction in central California. TMCI Construction, Inc. was subcontracted to perform the shaft enlargement and lining required for the elevator, surge and power shafts. Involved in the initial work was slashing the elevator and surge shaft into a previously excavated borehole. The elevator shaft then required a reinforced concrete lining and structural steel installation. Throughout the course of construction, numerous design changes occurred, necessitating a lining in both the power and surge shafts. These changes caused TMCI to design two underground hoisting systems to install these additional linings. An analysis of the construction methods used is now given. Introduction The Balsam Meadow Project consists of an underground hydroelectric powerhouse designed to provide additional capacity and energy to the Southern California Edison system during critical peak demand periods, and has the capability for pumped storage operation. The project is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains about 55 miles northeast of Fresno. The project will divert water presently flowing from Huntington Lake to Shaver Lake to power a single 200 megawatt turbine generator. The approach used to the shaft slashing was governed partially by the strict CAL-OSHA requirements, which became more stringent after the recent Helms' Creek accident. A scaled down sinking plant was used to minimize economic risk and to simplify the excavation and lining scheme.

At almost no time since the end of World War I has the coal industry been free from serious threats to its competitive position. At present, the critical question is whether the industry can maintain its position in the electric power market and this paper reviews the prospects in this area. Our report is part of a study, supported by Resources for the Future Inc., dealing with coal demand in general. Like most elements of coal economics, it has received much less analysis than problems in other energy sectors--a defect we felt worth correcting. We have concentrated on electric power elements of the market. The nature of the coal market makes this the natural choice. Three markets absorb over 80 per cent of coal production and are considered in our overall work. The completely excluded sectors are largely catchall categories in which coal use is declining anyway. Comparing the three markets included in the overall study, we see: modest growth is the most optimistic forecast for metallurgical coke; export growth depends to a large extent on policies of foreign governments. Electric power use, however, has rapidly grown to absorb over half of coal output and coal's prospects depend almost entirely on continued expansion of this market. Throughout the 1960's the demand for coal used to generate electrical power in the United States grew at an average rate of 6.5 per cent annually. This growth rate will be sustained until at least 1976.

The bucketwheel stacker/reclaimer is suited for a variety of bulk material handling systems, especially those operating with stockpiles in excess of 30,000 tons. The bucketwheel stacker/reclaimer, although relatively new in the United States (first introduced here in 1964), has been successfully used in European countries since the early 1940's. Basically the machine is the outgrowth of the bucketwheel earth excavator and the traveling tripper boom type stacker. Since their introduction here they have achieved wide acceptance, especially with coal fired power plants. (Figures 1, 2, and 3.) The stacker reclaimer has been utilized in barge and ship loading/unloading facilities, and in the material handling systems for steel mills, where it has been used to stack and reclaim iron ore at rates up to 6000 tph stacking and 4000 tph reclaiming. They have also been employed at mine mouth power plants for the handling and storing of the plant fuel supply and to help balance the mining rate with the fuel consumption rate.

Over the 40 years that the author has been engaged in the Australian underground coal mining industry, there has been a continuous improvement in safety performance as the sector has grown in size and productivity. The underground environment hosts many hazards with significant risk profiles that are kept in check by effective health and safety management systems that have evolved largely following major underground disasters. Observations are made on the changes observed for specific aspects of the underground coal sector, with particular reference to ventilation issues, and predications are made as to the needs of the future.CITATION:Robertson, B, 2013. The Zabirah bauxite is a Cretaceous paleolaterite exposed by postTertiary uplift and erosion of the Phanerozoic sequence. The laterite profile, which is preserved in situ, occupies a prominent angular unconformity over a sequence of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones ranging from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous in age, and is overlain by a Late Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate package. The profile is known to be preserved over an area of 250 sq km and at depths below the present surface of up to 80 m. The bauxite layer is hard, compact and predominantly pisolitic, with a variety of subordinate, superimposed textures resulting from post-formation alteration. The bauxite minerals are boehmite and gibbsite. Boehmite generally predominates, and the boehmite:gibbsite ratio averages 2:1, with a marked tendency for the proportion of boehmite to increase down the profile. Kaolinite, a major constituent of the profile, is concentrated in two zones, one above and one below the pisolitic bauxite layer. Iron content is variable and bears a direct relationship to parent-rock lithology. Genesis and preservation of the bauxite are due to the favourable coincidence of a number of geological controls of which the most significant are the local structural and sedimentary regimes, the lithology and chemistry of the parent rocks, and the Cretaceous paleogeography of the region.

It is well known that slag foaming can significantly complicate copper smelting processes. This is especially true for unpredictable events that generate large amounts of slag foam during a small period of time. These events are here referred to as eruptions and are typical for certain types of liquid bath furnaces such as modern top submerged lance (TSL) furnaces. A few authors already made the link between over- oxidation of the slag phase and slag foaming. In this work, the mechanism is studied in more detail and explained using the smelter chemistry and the behaviour of dynamic foam formation. Finally, the most influential parameters on the foaming behaviour of the process are presented. INTRODUCTION Copper remains one of the most important metals used in our modern society. In 2017, the annual amount of copper produced worldwide was about 23.5 million metric tons. This makes copper the third most produced metal in the world after steel and aluminium. The majority of this copper was produced by copper smelting, about 19 million metric tons, both from primary concentrate and secondary feed material as reported in ICSG’s World Copper Factbook 2018. In the past, copper smelting was mainly performed using Flash smelting, a technology developed before 1949 (Kojo, Jokilaakso & Hanniala, 2000). Nowadays, this type of smelter is being complemented by other smelter types such as ISASMELT and Ausmelt technologies. These are two types op smelter furnaces, based on the concept of a top submerged lance (TSL) furnace. These two technologies were both commercialized around 1990 (Arthur & Hunt, 2005). It is estimated by Wang et al. (2016) that at this time, both flash and TSL smelters contribute equally to the total amount of annually smelted copper. Flash smelting stays the most important technology for extracting copper from primary sources. TSL furnaces, on the other hand, are more suited than Flash smelters for the recovery of copper from secondary materials. This is because of the different ways that the feed material is inserted in both furnaces. In Flash smelters, the ore and fluxes needs to be fine and completely dry in order to be able to blow the mixture inside the burner area of the furnace. The feed material for TSL smelters show less constrains concerning humidity and particle size. The material is dropped from the top inside the molten bath. As a result, a more complex and flexible feed stream can be processed using TSL smelting (Wood, Hoang & Hughes, 2017). This feature will become more important in the future as primary copper sources gets more scarce and the need for a fully sustainable material cycle increases.

With New Zealand?s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1996, the government of the day increased work on developing an oceans strategy to help create a governance framework for the country?s extensive existing and potential maritime territories. This project took a new direction in 2001 with the establishment of an ad hoc committee of 6 Ministers, and their appointment of a Ministerial Advisory Committee (on which the senior author served) to consult with the public, identify widely held values and inform the development of a Vision for subsequent policy development. The current second stage of the policy development process involves a working group of officials from the relevant agencies completing a stock-take of existing laws and regulations to identify overlaps and gaps that should be addressed in the third and final stage. The public consultation process revealed, as might be expected, a wide range of perspectives but a solid consensus in favour of a coherent, and balanced, framework to enable the realization of economic benefits of ocean development so long as appropriate environmental standards (broadly expressed in terms of sustainability) are not compromised.

The phosphate fertilizer industry is a large activity in Brazil because the soil has a phosphorous deficiency. The phosphoric acid that is produced is extensively used in the production of fertilizer. It is produced by reacting phosphate carbonaceous rock with sulfuric acid, generating phosphogypsum as a by-product. In 1991, there were about 29 million tons of phosphogypsum stored in Brazil. This has increased to an estimated 280 million tons in 2001. While the phosphogypsum is used in the cement industry and also in agriculture, the quantity used is much less than the production rate, and the stockpiles are still increasing. The radioactivity of this waste may not allow its continued use as a construction material and some other uses. However, Brazilian phosphogypsum contains a smaller quantity of radioactive materials than is reported for phosphate rocks from other countries. One important reason is the geological origin of the Brazilian apatite. All the large deposits being currently mined are igneous, not sedimentary, as is the majority of the phosphate rock produced around the world. An extensive study is being conducted to characterize the phosphogypsum generated in two production facilities in Sao Paulo state to develop safe uses for this waste and determine the environmental impact caused by the present method of phosphogypsum disposal.
