ALTHOUGH Cerro de Pasco was well known since the early sixteen hundreds as one of the major silver districts of the Andes, its development on a modern scale did not occur until the first decade of the present century when a syndicate organized by James B. Haggin initiated the enterprise that eventually grew into the complex and widespread operations of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation. Options on a few claims in Cerro de Pasco that had been brought to New York in 1900 came to the attention of A. W. McCune, a mining man from Salt Lake City, who took them to Haggin and soon succeeded in interesting that creative mining financier in the possibilities of the district. James MacFarlane, an engineer well known to both Haggin and McCune, was sent to Peru early in 1901 to make the initial examinations which promptly led to acquisition of a substantial group of claims in the heart of the mineralized area. A syndicate to which Haggin turned over his rights was organized on Feb. 26, 1902 to provide the necessary funds. The original members were J. B. Haggin, who retained a 34 per cent interest, Edward H. Clark (for Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, the widow of Haggin's old associate, George Hearst), H. McK. Twombly, H. C. Frick, D. O. Mills, and J.P. Morgan.

Microtunneling is rarely a straight forward “business as usual” endeavor. More often than not, these projects take twists and turns that require on the fly, out of the box solutions to get the project completed. This paper is a case history of a 63-inch diameter, Permalok, microtunneling project, extending nearly 700 linear feet under a hill forming the left-hand abutment to an earth embankment tailings dam. The job had three major and unexpected challenges that required unorthodox solutions. Challenge #1— Face Configuration: The Santiago Formation, a cemented sand formation with widely varying strengths, presented a challenge to configuring the face with regards to the number and length of pics and cutters. Subtle differences in type and size of the tooling had a big impact on the performance of the machine. Challenge #2—Eccentric Loading: Issues at the launch shaft with the Permalok pipe adaptors caused eccentric loading on the casing pipe. This issue resulted in overstressing and breaking of several pipe joints that ultimately led to seizure of the tunnel. Challenge #3—Back-tunnel Excavation and MTBM Recovery: There were many detailed considerations into excavating a recovery tunnel to retrieve the MTBM, especially being under a high hazard earth embankment dam.

For several years the Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment Station, in cooperation with the Mines Department. of the University of Washington, has been studying the breakage and degradation of coal. The first phase of the study was devoted to the determination of the friability of many coals of various ranks and comparison of various methods for estimating friability.' A study of the relative ease or difficulty with which various coals are reduced to the fine size required for use as pulverized fuel followed the completion of this work. Baltzer and Hudson2 list twelve research organizations in the United States, two in England, one in Germany and one in Canada that are reported to be engaged on this problem; showing the general appreciation of the need for a simple method of estimating the grindability of different coals. Hardgrove,3 ho has advanced a method for estimating grindability, points out that pulverizer tests of different coals are incomplete and unsatisfactory. He compares such tests to that of a boiler test made without knowledge of the calorific value of the coal. Frisch arid Holder4 also stress the same point. They state that,

Some writers believe that when austenite transforms completely into pearlite on slow cooling through the thermal critical range, such transformation does not imply the formation of any of the so-called transition constituents: martensite, troostite and sorbite. Might it not be claimed with as much justification that when water freezes it does so suddenly, solid ice being obtained without passing through the intermediate stages of ice and water? Obviously, regardless of the speed of solidification, this would be erroneous. Before reaching the completed solid condition, this must of necessity pass through an unbroken series of stages when the system consists of mixtures of water and of ice, the former decreasing and the latter increasing in amount. Are not these "transitionV stages in the freezing of water similar to the transition stages occurring in the transformation of austenite into pearlite? To clarify, let us consider in Fig. 1 the mechanism of the transformation of eutectoid steel from its austenitic to its pearlitic condition as it cools slowly through its thermal critical range. It is generally admitted that this transformation is the result of two distinct phenomena: (1) the allotropic change of gamma iron into alpha iron and (2) the crystallizing out of solution of the carbide Fe3C. Whether this crystallizing of Fe3C implies also its formation is immaterial for our purpose. In other words, whether it is the carbon in atomic dispersion which is present in gamma iron or molecules of Fe3C has no bearing upon the matter to be discussed. The transformation of gamma iron into alpha iron cannot take place suddenly. It must of necessity be progressive, regardless of the speed with which it may take place. At A, for instance, there would be present AB gamma iron and BC alpha iron. The distance MN does not refer to falling temperature, but to the passage of time. It may be assumed that the transformation takes place at a constant temperature (the Ar321 point). In a similar way, the crystallization of Fe3C out of the austenite solid solution must be progressive as depicted between M and N. At A there would be present AB gamma iron, BC alpha iron, CD carbon dissolved in gamma and in alpha iron and DE Fe3C. Expanded markets for copper in the past few years and a consequent search for new ore bodies have revitalized the widely known but seldom applied method of producing copper called heap leaching. This term should be differentiated from dump leaching in that the latter is applied to dumps of mixed oxide and sulfide ores (although either may predominate) that have been too low grade to beneficiate and have, therefore, been stripped off the higher grade underlying sulfide ores. Heap leaching is defined here as the process applied to oxide ores which have been mined solely for the purpose of leaching. In this case, all costs of mining the ore become a part (and a substantial one, as will be shown) of the cost of the copper produced, whereas in dump leaching the mining cost has already been accounted for as a stripping cost for the sulfide ore. Of course, with newly opened ore bodies, stripping costs may be divided through accounting procedures, between the copper produced by the mill and that obtained by leaching, but in general this type of operation must be economic on the basis of the sulfide ore alone. Heap leaching, as a beneficiation method, is unique in that it is the only process used for the recovery of a metal in which the time involved from mining the ore to metal production is measured in months instead of hours or at the most, days, Then too, after the ore body has been depleted and mining has ceased, metal production will continue for some substantial period of time. Heap leaching is also unique because unlike any other method of beneficiation, metal recovery cannot be accurately forecast ahead of time and recovery will never approach that of a conventionally milled sulfide ore or even that of a vat leached oxide ore. Counter-balancing this drawback, however, is the relatively low capital expenditure necessary to put a heap leaching operation into production and the consequence that smaller ore bodies which would not support the higher capital cost involved in a vat leaching plant can be made into producers. Stated more simply, in heap leaching the operator accepts low recovery in exchange for low capital costs and the break even point, that is, where the operator should go to vat leaching with its higher recovery and higher capital costs, is a matter of economics and also, to a great extent, a matter for the nature of the ore to decide. For instance, an ore that will vat leach in 7 to 10 days using 7 pounds of sulfuric acid per pound of copper produced might use double or triple that amount of acid during the months that are required for heap leaching.

The Richmond Hill Mine has recently completed a reclamation plan to mitigate Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) which was identified at the toe of the former waste rock pile in 1992. Reclamation activities began in 1994 with the removal of ARD material from the waste rock pile and placement of this material in the former pit. This material was then isolated from the near surface environment by a low permeability capping system designed to minimize water and oxygen flow into the material. The capping system consists of, from bottom to top, six inches of limestone, 18 inches of low permeability clay liner, 4 and one-half feet of thermal barrier/drain layer, and six inches of topsoil. This capping system was completed in 1995. An extensive program is in place to monitor the effectiveness of the reclamation plan, and includes measurements on moisture content movement, temperature, oxygen content, and groundwater impacts. Monitoring has been ongoing since the completion of reclamation. This monitoring plan is demonstrating the success in isolating the material from the near surface environment and minimizing the impacts to the surrounding environment.

Deformation is a critical indicator required to evaluate the structural safety, stability, and integrity. For example, the deformed shape of a building structure is a key parameter that needs to be measured and tracked during laboratory testing or post-disaster inspections. However, existing techniques used for the deformation measurement and tracking do not have all the desirable characteristics, such as: reliability, accuracy, low-cost and simplicity of tools installation. In order to address this issue, a novel method has been proposed in this study. The method consists on using the image processing technique to automatically measure and track the deformations of concentrically braced frame (CBF) structures. Accordingly, the critical points in a CBF structure are first identified and the topological configuration of the structure is retrieved. The points and topological configuration characterize the basic shape of the structure. In this way, the deformation of the structure can be determined by measuring and tracking these points and their topological configuration. To show its effectiveness, the proposed method has been tested against the manual deformation measurements.

The Albany Conglomerate is a widespread geological unit found in northern areas of Auckland, New Zealand. It has previously been described as part of the early Miocene Waitemata Group which underlies most of Auckland. Much of the Waitemata Group comprises weak interbedded sandstones and mudstones, but also includes conspicuous conglomeratic units such as the Albany Conglomerate. The Albany Conglomerate comprises a well-cemented mixture of hard pebbles, cobbles and boulders of igneous and metamorphic derivation in lenticular beds. A number of tunnelling projects are planned for the near future in Auckland. Recent experience has shown that the variable features associated with the Albany Conglomerate can make selecting appropriate construction methods very challenging. This paper explores the engineering geological and sedimentological features of the Albany Conglomerate with respect to other conglomerates within the Waitemata Group and the potential implications on tunnelling projects in Auckland. The Newmont Tanami Operations are located in the Northern Territory, approximately 550 km north-west of Alice Springs. The Granites process plant commenced operations in 1986 as a 300?000 t/a ball mill / carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant and has undergone numerous expansions between that time and the current day, with project-to-date gold production exceeding 6.5 Moz. Annual plant throughput has exceeded 2.8 Mt/a while processing a blend of open pit material and ore from the Callie Deeps underground mine, with annual gold production exceeding 400 koz. In 2013 the operation processed 1.8 Mt of underground ore for the production of 323 koz of gold.This paper reviews the operation and expansion of The Granites process plant since the mid to late 1980s with particular focus on the gravity gold recovery circuit. The Tanami ores contain significant levels of free gold, and gravity recovery has long been an integral component of the metal recovery process at the Granites plant. This study examines the possible relationships between compositional variability in non-hydrothermal manganese nodules and large-scale environmental parameters. In the central SW Pacific (145-180° W and 20-O° S) the level of primary productivity, the rates and proportions of carbonate, silica and organic matter supply to the sediments, and the position of the seafloor relative to the Calcium Carbonate Compensation Depth (CCD) appear to directly influence nodule composition. Four zones of nodule composition are apparent. These zones correlate fairly well with the level of primary productivity in surface waters, as estimated by satellite-based measurement of chlorophyll content. The observed correlations between surface productivity and nodule composition are consistent with the contention that the dominant source of several transition metals in these deposits (i.e , Mn, Ni, Cu. and Zn) is provided by removal of fine-grained particulate matter from the water column by biological means. Subsequent decay of organic matter in sediments augments the content of these metals in the nodules through oxic and sub-oxic diagenesis. The opposite behavior of Fe and Co content may in part result from mineralogical and dilution effects.

The alloy Cu4Pd has a disordered face-centered-cubic structure when quenched from temperatures between 478ºC and the melting point (about 1100°C). Below 478ºC an ordered phase is stable. The results of a Debye-Scherrer X-ray analysis indicate that the ordered phase has a tetragonal unit cell described by the space group C24h — P42/mt with 2 Cu in 2a, 2 Cu in 2f, 4 Cu in 4j (x = 0.2, y = 0.6), 4Pd in 4j (x = 0.4, y = 0.2), and 8 Cu in 8k (x = 0.1, y = 0.3). The orientation relationship between the face-centered-cubic phase and the ordered tetragonal phase is given by: [100],,. // [130]al,. COO1Ia.d.//COO1I,,.. • The behavior of Cu,Pd is typical of ordering alloys except that the transformation is very sluggish. The increase in hardness and the microstructural and X-ray diffraction effects are interpreted in terms of coherency strains caused by the ordering. AN anomalous construction in the Cu-Pd phase diagram (Fig. 1) was reported in 1939 and has been allowed to stand without further published attention since that time. The odd figuration about the composition 10 to 27 atomic pct Pd is derived mostly from the work of Jones and Sykes.1 Evidently several features of this binary system require further study if the constitutional forms are to be well understood. The present paper includes a study of one of these features, that is, the crystal structure of a single ordered alloy containing nominally 20 atomic pct Pd. This choice of composition was suggested by the work of Harker and associates who determined the structure of Ni4Mo2 and Ni4W.3 The nature of the ordering process in Cu4Pd was studied also by observing the hardness, microstructure, and Debye-Scherrer patterns of specimens which had been aged at various temperatures after quenching from an initial disordering treatment. Experimental Methods A 20 gram ingot of Cu4Pd was made by melting spectrographically standardized copper from Johnson, Matthey, and Co., and commercially pure (99.5 + ) palladium in an argon-filled quartz tube. Chemical analysis showed that the ingot contained 80.0 atomic pct Cu. The ingot was rolled about 60 pct to a strip 0.060 in. thick and was homogenized for 16 hr at 950°C in low pressure argon. Rods cut from the rolled strip were worked into wire 0.015 in. in diameter, and specimens for hardness and microscopic examination were cut from the remaining strip. All specimens, with the exception of some of the wire, were given an initial disordering treatment by heating for 16 hr at 950°C, followed by water quenching. A 10 cm length of as-drawn wire was water quenched after being held in a temperature-gradient furnace4 for 89 days. Room-temperature Debye-Scherrer photograms were then made at points along the wire to determine the temperature below which the ordered phase was stable. Although the accuracy of temperature determination in the gradient was only about ±10 °C, the temperature gradient was sufficiently gradual that the sensitivity was much better and locations which had differed by as little as 1°C could be distinguished. An analysis of the crystal structure of the well ordered alloy was made by X-ray diffraction using a specimen cut from this wire. The change of Debye-Scherrer pattern as ordering progressed was studied by using isothermally aged samples of initially disordered wires. The wires were sealed under low-pressure argon in small quartz tubes for heat treatment. After the aging treatment, the tubes were quenched in water and photograms were made at room temperature in a 10 cm diam camera using filtered Cu kX. (A = 1.540511) Hardness was measured on a Vickers hardness tester using a 10 kg load and 2/3 in. objective lens. Reported values are the average of at least three impressions made on flat specimens 0.060 in. thick. After the hardness of a heat-treated sample had been measured, it was resealed in low-pressure argon and returned to the furnace for continued aging at the same temperature. In this way, two samples served for all aging times at each temperature. Hardness specimens which had been aged 500 hr or more were used for metallographic examination after the final aging treatment. A dilute potassium-dichromate etching solution was used.

A phenomenological model is presented for leaching silver from silver sulfide contained in mineral particles with ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions of copper in stirred reactors. Experimental results were used to adjust the kinetic parameters of the model, such as the reaction order and velocity. The incorporation of the cuprous sulfide-silver sulfide equilibrium at the reaction interface allowed the prediction of the conversion limits for different reagent concentrations. The information obtained from the reactor model was later integrated into a heap leaching simulation, whose results adequately describe tendencies observed in column tests, with respect to variations in copper and thiosulfate concentrations. Inquiries are frequently made concerning the chalk- and clay-beds of Arkansas, usually with a view to the manufacture of Portland cement. The chalk-deposits were first described by Professor R. T. Hill in the annual report of the Geological Survey of Arkansas for 1888, vol. ii., pp. 153-162. Since the publication of that report I have visited localities then unknown, and have accumulated considerable additional information concerning these deposits, dl of which is brought together in the present paper. My report upon the clays of the State has never been published; only a few of the more conveniently available deposits are mentioned in the present paper. The Chalk-Deposits. Stratigraphic Position of the Chalk.—The chalk-deposits of Arkansas belong to rocks of Cretaceous age. The Cretaceous rocks are confined to a single definite area in Southwest Arkansas. Beginning on the Ouachita river, a little northeast of Arkadelphia, its southern or upper margin follows a line about five miles southeast of, and approximately parallel to, the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway from Arkadelphia

Because of continuing concerns regarding the effects of cumulative quantities of materials in the environment, the Bureau of Mines has initiated a series of studies to evaluate, to the fullest extent possible, all aspects of the materials flow sequence fur selected commodities. Although tungsten and its compounds do not pose a significant health hazard to the environment, they do represent valuable resource materials to which appropriate conservation considerations must be given. The present study includes a description of recent trends in the consumption, loss, and recycling of tungsten-containing materials in the United States during the period 1974 to 1991 and an estimation of the cumulative loss of tungsten to the environment since 1910. Obsolete tungsten is recycled primarily as cemented tungsten carbide components that have been used in cutting and wear-resistant applications. The quantity recycled, as a of annual U.S. consumption of tungsten, was estimated to have increased from 10% in 1974 to 341a in 1991. An estimated 58% of the 148,000 metric tons of primary tungsten consumed since 1910 was lost to the environment through means such as dissipation, discard, and dilution.

This examination of Pacific Northwest (Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) ferrous scrap-industry operations, principally those in Oregon and Washington, points out factors influencing the supply and consumption of scrap materials, such as the complete dependence of steel ingot producers in these States on scrap as a metal raw material and the sizable quantity of scrap exported from Seattle and Portland to Japan. The pattern of the industry is presented as a movement of materials from their diverse sources to the consuming market. The geographic locations of the consuming industries in relation to the areas generating scrap materials and the movement pattern of the supply from source to destination strongly influences the cost of the commodity. The best measure of the scrap supply available in an area is experience in terms of how much scrap was withdrawn at a given price. Scrap availability is not finite, because the return of materials as scrap is secular and influenced by constantly varying market conditions. Steel ingot producers use 75 percent of the approximate 500,000 tons of scrap consumed in Oregon and Washington; steel foundries take 15 percent of the total; and iron foundries, ferroalloy plants, and other miscellaneous consumers utilize the remainder. Also, from 1955 to 1960 an average of about 200,000 tons has been exported annually from Oregon and Washington. The foreign exports are supplemented by lesser shipments to other steel producing States, principally in the western United States. From 1955 to 1960 the preferred and higher value heavy melting scrap grades accounted for about 60 percent of total withdrawals which varied between 600,000 and 950,000 tons annually. Total crap withdrawals from Oregon and Washington are projected to 1.8 million tons by 1985, 60 percent (1.1 million tons) of which will be heavy melting grades. No. 1 heavy melting scrap is most attractive to scrap consumers at $35 per ton or less. Price-supply relationships compared with projected scrap requirements indicate future prices possibly over $35 per ton. High prices over a long period could motivate the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers to produce steel from iron ore. However, technologic changes taking place at integrated steel plants could reduce scrap withdrawals from the Pacific Northwest, which might keep the scrap price sufficiently attractive to obviate production of competitive iron products by the Pacific Northwest scrap consumers.

The system Cb-Re was examined in detail utilizing pure metals, careful melting techniques, and heat treatments. Metallographic and X-my methods were utilized for phase identification. In addition to soli-dus determinations, the composition limits and mode of formation of the intermetallic compounds 0 and X were determined. The binary constitution diagram Cb-Re has been the subject of a number of investigations.'-7 Two intermetallic phases have been described and tentative diagrams have been proposed. It was the aim of this investigation to obtain a complete and more accurate diagram through the use of purer alloys and improved techniques. The diagram worked out by Knapton7 was published after our experiments were concluded. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The starting materials were Re powder of 99.95 pct purity, supplied by the Chase Brass and Copper Co., and Cb rondelles of 99.6 pct purity, supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. Typical analyses are given in Table I. The alloys were prepared from compacted Re powder and Cb rondelles; for critical compositions master alloys were used. The melts varied from 5 to 50 g and were melted nonconsumably in an Heraeus arc furnace, under ti-tanium-gettered laboratory grade argon. It was necessary to invert the buttons and remelt, followed by crushing and further remeltings, the number of which depended on the nature of the fracture of the alloy. The weight of each alloy was carefully checked after each melting operation. It was found that significant weight losses occurred only when loose Re powder was used. These losses amounted to a maximum of 3 wt pct in such instances, but did not occur after the charge was once molten, regardless of the composition. Typical loss of weight after 4 remelts, including crushing, amounted to 0.2 wt pct. Oxygen pickup during successive melting cycles did not appear to be significant, since the weight gain values never exceeded 0.01 wt pct. Control of the composition of the alloys was not too difficult; however, the problem of homogenization was a far greater one. Optimum alloying conditions were finally achieved by a combination of master alloy production and repeated crushing and remelting cycles. The compositions of the alloys utilized to determine the constitution diagram are listed in Table 11. The weight balance method was used ultimately as the sole analytical method, since repeated checks indicated that it was accurate to 0.2 pct, if the weight losses were small. The results were double-checked by a metallographic study of the homogeneity of the samples, since this was presumed to be the more serious factor. Heat treatments at 1200°C or lower were accomplished by sealing the specimens in Vycor tubes, heating in a Globar furnace, followed by air cooling. This was considered to be an adequate quench because of the very low temperatures involved. For temperatures of 1200" to 1900°, alloys were homogenized and heat treated in a tungsten-filament resistance vacuum furnace. From 1900" to 2750" a tantalum-tube resistance furnace was utilized, operating under a vacuum of 105 mm Hg. The temperature measurements up to 1200" were made by means of platinum-platinum 10 pct Rh thermocouples, with an accuracy of 5°C. Because of the absence of an iron-producing industry, the Pacific Northwest is working under an economic handicap. This is particularly apparent in the gray-iron-foundry industry because of the high price of pig iron imported from foreign sources or shipped in from producing ?areas within the United States. The high prices and sometimes short supply of ferrous metal products has put a brake on industrialization, which has been only partly compensated by the availability of cheap electric power. The economic condition of the gray-iron-foundry industry could be improved by establishing a small iron-producing industry based on the locally available ores. Moreover, establishing a local iron smelter would create a market for resources now dormant. Low-grade ores of manganese, chromium, and nickel would become usable in industry when combined with the iron ore from Scappoose. Pig iron produced in even limited quantities would level out the fluctuation in supply. The ore deposits, being small, would not supply enough pig iron to satisfy the entire demand. This condition necessitates designing special pig irons that will carry abnormally high proportions of scrap in the cupola charge.

Over the past decade, numerous factors have led US copper firms to face increasingly severe competition from low cost foreign producers. As a result, greater attention is being devoted to developing and implementing new technology that can reduce costs and maintain the competitive position of domestic firms while simultaneously meeting environmental requirements. To obtain a better understanding of the likelihood of the development, adoption, and use of innovative copper technologies in the future, the Bureau of Mines contracted with Mineral Systems Inc. of Stamford, CT, to undertake a systematic survey of technological experts in industry, government, and the academic community. According to the survey, major developments in exploration over the next 25 years are likely to be in technologies that facilitate analysis and interpretation of deposit data rather than those that enable the collection of additional data. Most new copper mining and beneficiation technologies are likely to represent evolutionary extensions of existing systems with a notable increase expected in the application of information systems technologies and computer control methods. A possible movement towards increased usage of continuous mining systems in copper was also noted. Experts indicated that several copper smelters are under consideration for extensive renovation and, as a result, flash smelting technology is expected to become much more widely used in the US. A gradual movement toward continuous smelting methods was also forecast. In copper refining, the major technological change expected is the gradual automation of various refinery operations. Finally, though increased usage is expected, in situ solution mining and hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores are not expected to become widespread over the forecast time horizon. This first article in a two-part series describes the survey method chosen and the technological innovations selected for eval¬uation. Also discussed are the assessment panels, background scenarios, critical events, and diffusion forecasts. Next month, part two will address technology forecasts resulting from the study. Featured are discussions on future copper exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, and recycling. A cost/benefit analysis will also be included. Methodology Selection of Assessment Method To develop a consensus forecast of technological change in the copper industry, a technique for systematically polling subjective opinions of experts was required. After conducting a literature survey and some preliminary testing, the direct probability assessment method was selected. With this assessment method experts are asked to express in quantitative terms their judgment of the probability that a specified event will occur, usually over a series of time frames. The method was chosen because the experts were observed to be more comfortable with this approach during the testing period, and the results of this process effectively satisfied the assessment objective. The experts generally could provide more precise estimates of the timing of future events using this technique because it was the least cumbersome of the assessment methods tested. Identification, Selection, and Description of the Technologies The initial list (Table 1) of innovative copper technologies assessed in the study was developed from two principal sources: knowledge and expertise of the study team and a review of relevant technical literature. From this list of 47 potential technologies, 10 were selected for detailed assessment. Table 2 lists 35 technologies that were subsequently identified in the first series of assessments. Twelve technologies from this list were also selected for detailed evaluation in a second assessment round. The safe use of a refrigerant or any substance depends on knowledge of its pertinent properties and conditions of use; therefore some of the properties of refrigerants that are related to life, fire, and explosion hazards are discussed herein. These data serve as a basis for suggested control measures in the use· of refrigerants. The properties of refrigerants may be broadly classified into three main groups: (1) Those important for refrigeration, (2) those significant from the standpoint of confining the refrigerant, and (3) those that become important if the refrigerant escapes from the :machine or container. The first group of properties, such as latent heat of vaporization, specific heat of vapor, specific heat of liquid, etc., is not considered to be directly related to safety and is not discussed here. The second group, those properties important in confining the refrigerants, has particular significance because· it relates to "built-in" safety. This group is emphasized because it is believed the soundest procedure in designing equipment is to give due consideration .to both the health and safety hazards likely to be associated with the equipment. Furthermore, the toxicity, fire, and explosion hazards are controlled as long as the refrigerant is confined. Some properties of this group are (1) stability, (2) corrosiveness, (3) boiling point, (4) pressure developed in the system, (5) warning odor or irritation, and (6) ease of detection. The third group includes such properties as toxicity (of compound and decomposition products), irritating action, and explosibility.

"Mineral endowment in northern British Columbia and the Yukon Territory was assessed on the basis of geological opinion which was gathered in a quantitative framework of subjective probabilities. The survey area encompassed 364,000 square miles and was divided into 310 cells having dimensions of one degree of longitude by one-half degree of latitude. The response solicited related to tonnage, grade and number of deposits of a particular mineral in each cell. The questionnaire sought an expression of mineral endowment down to mine-able depth as distinct from economic expectations. Details on the questionnaire and responses are presented in a series of contour maps on individual commooities, which illustrate the collective occurrence picture of the respondents. The approach is largely dependent on the cooperation of an adequate number of geologists familiar with the region being examined. This approach to an assessment of the mineral endowment of a region has a wide range of applicability, from the focusing of exploration effort to aiding government and development bodies in the formulation of regional strategies and the planning, for example, of road, rail and power facilities."
