The mining industry maintains a ælove-hateÆ relationship with water. Dewatering, aquifer, water disposal, irrigation, process water, tailings water, run-off water, seepage, leachate and sumps are all terms that are used on a daily basis in the mining industry, highlighting the numerous water usages on site and their associated quality. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2001), each year the mining industry consumes over 530 000 ML of water. The increasing recognition of water as a limited and valuable commodity, and the associated environmental concerns with the management of water disposal to the environment has led the industry into improving on-site water management. Progressively, water balance models and water reuse strategies are being developed, incorporating more sophisticated water treatment processes. By way of example, membrane technologies, once restricted to industries such as the pharmaceutical industry or the drinking water industry, are now entering the mining world with the aim of producing clean water of suitable quality for ore processing or for advanced treatment prior to release to the environment. This paper will provide a review of the threats and opportunities linked to water use and recovery/reuse in the mining industry in Australia. It will open with an overview of current water usage and associated quality for various mineral industries and continue with identifying the threats and limitations associated with the quality of available water. It will then present how newly developed water treatment technologies and assessment tools can be incorporated into the system to enhance the recovery and reuse of water on site, reduce the risks associated with securing long-term water supply and further improve production, environment and safety (health risk control).

"There has been a consistent move in recent years to continuously cast small billets while utilizing ceramic stream protection between tundish and mould. The need to have ceramic stream protection has developed from a need to improve billet surface quality by submerged pouring. The need to protect the ladle to tundish stream in conjunction with tundish to mould protection is explained.The continuous casting of thin slabs is at the development state and will require a great deal of ceramic development to ensure the economic viability of the project. An insight is given to the main problems.IntroductionDuring the early development period o f the continuous casting of steel in the late 1940s and 1950s, much of the work was carried out on small cross section products. For example, the continuous casting of 50 mm square billets was carried out on a production scale in the United Kingdom at Barrow. Slab casting was initiated on a production basis on 100 mm thick stainless steel slabs at Atlas Steel, Weiland, Ontario. In the case of slab casting the thickness increased gradually until it was similar to Slabbing Mill feedstock , i.e. in the range 200 mm to 250 mm , although stainless steel continued to be lower at around 185 mm thick.For billets , a significant proportion of steel is now cast at around 100 mm square which creates specific difficulties when casting with a submerged pour - mould powder practice. The move back to smaller cross sections is further emphasized by the current interest in "" Near Net Shape Casting"" . If this move continues, then significant development will be required to create the refractories used between tundish and mould in the continuous casting process.Two specific areas which will receive attention are; (I) the casting of small cross section billet s; and (2) the casting of thin slab."

(written discussion *) .-As it is impossible to spare the time for a lengthy discusson of this excellent paper, I am dwelling only on points where either the information is not clear or opinion differs radically from that of the authors. On page 1218, relative to oil rock, the authors state that the presence of oil rock is always taken as a favorable indication of proximity to ore. As thick, highly carbonaceous, oil rock has been found quite often in isolated patches outside of the district proper, the mere presence of oil rock is not always an indication of the propinquity to ore deposits. Regarding glass rock, I agree with the authors, that, generally speak-ing, sphalerite in the glass rock is spotty; however, they fail to mention that nearly all mines contain more or less ore in the glass rock, the usual location being near the toe of the pitch. On page 1220, they say that disseminated deposits are only found in, or close to, the oil rock. To refute this statement, I refer them to a typical disseminated deposit situated at the Adam and Eve shaft of the Frontier Mining Co. This deposit is located in the central horizon of the Galena dolomite, that is, in those sedimentaries containing flint nodules. Perfect crystals of sphalerite are found disseminated through-out the rock, and are commonly known by the miners as strawberry jack. I believe all top runs, or upper deposits as described above, should be classed as disseminated; physically the ore makes its occurrence in just such a manner.

The work that Dr. Cain is doing on gases in steel should have a highly important bearing on investigational work in connection with steel-making practice. We found, for example, in our work in connection with the use of manganese in open-hearth practice that we needed expressions for the manganese efficiency and the "condition" of the steel. To get these figures we assumed that we would need to know the amount of FeO at different stages of the heat and the amounts of the gases present. This required simultaneous analyses of our samples for FeO and the gases and Dr. Cain seems to be the only investigator who has considered the analytical work from this point of view. That he has done so is very encouraging and it is to be hoped that his work will solve the mys-teries now surrounding this neglected phase of steel metallurgy. Those interested in the Ledebur method for use in connection with the efficiency of manganese as a "deoxidizing " agent will he disappointed to learn that more recent work at the Bureau indicates that Ledebur determinations are not reliable. The principal source of error seems to be due to the partial reduction of the ferrous oxide by the carbon present in the steel. However, it seems like an unnecessary criticism of the Ledebur method to state (p. 1319) that it proved of little value because it showed little differences in oxygen for a series of steels treated with ,various reagents and showing variations in physical properties and free-

The Morning Star diorite dyke has been subjected to two periods of mineralization. The earlier, genetically related to the dyke magma, gave rise to a weak chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-gold mineralization in a narrow zone, up to 25 cm. wide, which parallelsthe nearby western (hanging) wall of the dyke. Subsequently a set of conjugate shears formed in the dyke as a result of tectonic movements. Gold-quartz veins formed in these shears giving rise to the classical "ladder veins" of the Morning Star mine. On either side of the veins ("floors") the diorite has been bleached for up to 3 ft. This involved introduction of much CO. and some K"O, and S with abstraction of SiO. and FeO, giving rise to carbonates, sericite, zoisite and pyrite. The veins consist of quartz with minor amounts of albite and carbonate, together with pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, bournonite, boulangerite and gold. Spectrographic analyses of gold show that the suite of trace elements is consistent throughout the mine.INTRODUCTIONThe gold-quartz veins of the Morning Star Gold Mine, at Wood's Point, Victoria, are a classic example of the "ladder vein" type of deposit. The structure of this series of repeating quartz veins or "floors", some barren and some productive, occurring in a set of conjugate shears which transect a "dyke bulge" of diorite (Fig. 1), has been described on numerous occasions as mining has progressed and figures in the textbooks (Whitelaw, 1905; 1916; Junner, 1920; Lindgren, 1933; McKinstry, 1935; 1942; 1949; Kenny, 1949; Hills, 1952; Clappison, 1953) ; but there has been no study of the mineralization apart from that in Junner's (1920) general study of the Walhalla-Wood's Point Goldfield, made at a time when mining had not developed below the 400 ft. level,. and the mine was dormant.

An understanding of the creep and yield behavior of salt is required for the rock mechanics design aspects of solution mining. Most previous studies of salt behavior have been performed on small specimens of salt under homogeneous stress conditions; i.e., uniaxial and triaxial tests on specimens <0.002 m3. The corejacking test is a larger scale test (-0.75 m3) with inhomogeneous stress conditions that provides data on the structural response of salt. Interpretation of the responses from eight such corejacking tests provides verification of the requisite constitutive parameters required to predict salt behavior at different levels of stress and temperature. These constitutive parameters are not those studied in the usual laboratory test. Corejacking test results show almost inseparable elastic and plastic closures simultaneous with the corejack pressurization. Very rapid closure (on a relative basis) continues for a period of time after the pressurization. This rapid closure is shown to be both continuing yield deformation and creep deformation. After the period of rapid closure, the closure rate approaches a constant value. Numerical modeling of the corejack tests using a creep law containing both transient and steady-state creep functions does not provide results that agree with the responses measured in the corejack tests. Using an experimental design technique plus additional numerical modeling that includes yielding of the salt, results in identification of the significant parameters which allow agreement. The significance of the results from the study is demonstrated by comparing the postulated stability and creep response of a solution-mined cavern using the previous understanding of salt behavior and the understanding developed from this study.

HAVING demonstrated to you above the practice of bringing silver to its ultimate fineness and perfection, it now remains for me to describe how the two kinds of metals that are found in the smelting product that you made from the ores are to be brought to their end: One is copper and the other lead, and perhaps a third is gold, if per-chance the silver that you refined in the cupeling hearth contained any. It would be almost impossible that it should not contain any, because either a little or a lot is almost always found as an admixed substance not only in silver but in. every one of the other metals as well. But in order to continue in sequence, you must suppose that there is some gold and that, of the two materials you have that I mentioned above and told you to save, one is the matte (calling it according to the usage of Germany, * since I do not know a more exact or better word for describing it to you) and the .other is the litharge that you took from the cupeling hearth. In addition, the hearths themselves are saturated and full of lead. If these things should remain in their present condition they would be useless bodies without any perfection. First, taking one of the three said parts, as a material of greater quantity and also as a thing that needs greater labor, and because, being reduced to the point I have told you with smelting and evaporation, it is nearer to its end, I shall tell you what must be done in order to bring it to pure copper. As I have told you, there are two materials on hand, one of which is the matte and the other the litharge. Each at first sight seems a half-burned thing; one has already been finished metal and the other is to be, but in my opinion the matte is nearer to its end than is the litharge because the latter has been dried by the power of the fire and re-formed from another body. Now leaving aside the discussion of this thing, after the matte has been well evaporated and reduced, it is taken and put on a forge. In front of the tuyère a receptacle is made of stones that neither calcine nor melt, or of coals and powdered clay, in the form of a little cradle that is longer than it is wide and not very deep. "Abstract - The Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is located 265 km south of Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Nunavut Territory, Canada, in the west-central Slave structural province. The Izok deposit is owned 100% by Inmet Mining Corporation and represents one of the largest undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. The Izok deposit is hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks of late Archean age. The hanging-wall stratigraphy includes additional felsic volcaniclastic rocks, andesitic and basaltic flows, thin sulfide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sedimentary rocks. The felsic volcanic rocks are intruded by intermediate dikes and sills, followed by gabbroic dikes and sills. Both intrusive suites are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to the overlying flows. All lithologies are subsequently cut by younger, irregular, granitic pegmatite and diabase dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks are regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene hornfels grade. The massive sulfides occur within a large (kilometer-scale) Na-depleted sericitic alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hanging-wall rocks to the deposit are characterized by zones of muscovite- biotite-sillimanite, lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite, and locally intense silicification and sodium metasomatism. All lithologies have been affected by younger Ca-metasomatism. As currently defined, the Izok deposit comprises a cluster of five complexly zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central West, Central East, and Inukshuk lenses. The first four lenses are amenable to open-pit mining, whereas the Inukshuk lens will require underground development. The total indicated mineral resource presently stands at 16.5 million tonnes with a grade of 2.2% Cu, 11.4% Zn, 1.1% Pb, and 60 g/t Ag. Inmet Mining Corporation is presently reviewing the economic feasibility of developing the property."

Caterpillar has led the way for sound reduction in off highway trucks (OHT) used for mining. In 2000 Caterpillar introduced the 793CXQ sound reduction OHT (Figure 4) to meet local noise level demands in the Hunter Valley near Sydney, Australia. The sound level of the mining equipment in the Hunter Valley is being reduced to pre-serve the quality of life for the residents of the area. To meet the levels established required a major redesign of the 793C, as a result the sound power level was reduced by 9 dB (A), which is a less than 1/8the original sound level.

Campaign life of the converting furnace has been limited by break-outs through the hearth and walls. Throughput of concentrate has increased by 60% since start-up of the copper operations in 1981. The Furnace Integrity program was initiated at Kidd in 1993 to improve the reliability and safety of the smelting-cleaning-converting furnace line. The converting furnace is undergoing a series of upgrades to overcome severe refractory wear to the roof, walls and hearth. A recent shut-down was held in March 1997 to implement improvements to the roof, walls and slag outlet. Wall modifications included a new upper shell, wall coolers which can be supported during a shut-down from outside of the vessel, and an increase in the number of cooling blocks. Improvements to the roof included increased cooling, a novel brick/cooler suspension system, and roof compression for gas tightness. Design is currently underway to deepen the refractory hearth, to decrease hearth erosion and increase resistance to flotation.

The crusher development programme for 7ft Super Extra Heavy Duty (SXHD) Symons cone crushers commenced in 1984. The main objective of the programme was to run the crushers at maxi- mum power for the full life of the liners. This would give a finer product sizing enabling grinding and flotation plant throughput to be maximised. The study was conducted along two basic lines of attack, the first main- taining an effective profile through the life of the liners, the second improv- ing the properties of the liners. It has been found that crusher liner life can be extended and crushing efficiency improved by modification of liner composition and profile.

"The southern Abitibi Belt is the major source of gold in Quebec. Although the northern part of the belt is quickly being developed, the area under study will not be downgraded in the near future because it still contains more than 75% of the known reserves in the belt.Gold is found in a variety of geological environments which are part of a small number of distinct structural patterns. For the exploration geologist, outlining such patterns might be easier and more productive than defining, when it is possible, the exact genetic nature of the gold mineralization.Exploring in the right place has always been one of the main concerns of explorationists. This paper briefly describes the various favourable geological settings, and outlines areas, types of structure and lithologies of high potential for gold exploration in the southern Abitibi Belt.IntroductionThe southern part of the Abitibi Belt is a profilic mining area for precious and base metals (Lulin 1990). Although mineralizing processes and controls of polymetallic deposits are well known and understood (Lydon 1984), almost every gold occurrence is a unique case and numerous models have been proposed (Roberts 1987; Hodgson and McGeehan 1982; Hodgson 1990).This study does not define new genetic models for the formation of gold deposits, neither is it meant to elaborate on the existing ones. A genetic approach, is by definition, theoretical and, to some extent, universal. It helps geologists define types of targets and exploration tools but does not outline or quantify target areas. To tentatively summarize the complexity of a genetic approach, a brief discussion on the various genetic models in vogue in Abitibi and the problems related to their use in exploration can be found at the end of this paper."

The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company has divided their coal mines into groups or divisions: Las Animas, Huerfano, Fremont and Gunnison counties. Each division is represented by a safety committee composed of three men appointed by the management and three men selected by the employes? representatives. The three men appointed by the management are usually from a group engaged in routine work that is primarily of a safety nature. Mr. Robert McAllister, chief mine inspector; Mr. George B. Parker, superintendent of first aid and mine rescue training; Mr. F. C. Miller, chief chemist, fuel department; and Mr. 0. C. Irwin, assistant chief electrician. The three men appointed by the management act in each of the four divisions. It is the duty of the safety commit- tee to visit each mine three times per year and make a thorough investigation of conditions underground and on top. Their report is in the form of recommendations to the management for their consideration. They are also called to investigate all fatal accidents and learn, if possible, the cause leading up to the accident and recommend precautionary measures that will prevent the recurrence. This committee inspects the haulage roads, air courses, manways, electrical equipment, ventilation, timbering, working places and humidity. In addition, each mine has a local safety committee with the superintendent acting as chairman. It is the duty of this committee to keep in daily touch with conditions underground and on top. They hold weekly meetings and discuss problems related to safety. These men work on local conditions that govern their affairs. As an example: One of the mines has a checking out board at the man-trip parting in addition to the regular checking in and out system as required by law, and this board is checked before the man-trip leaves for the outside, giving the officials a chance to take prompt action in looking up a man who may have become ill or injured. Should a man walk out and forget to check off, there is a penalty imposed. The ventilation of a coal mine is most important and the method of conducting the air to the working face is one of the greatest precautionary measures linked with safety. A quantity of air must be maintained at every working face to insure rapid diffusion of explosive or noxious gases and in a manner without interruption. With this intent in, view, the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company is installing fan equipments with capacities of 200,000 cubic feet per minute with dual drives, twin fans in some instances, for insured circulation. Every mine will close! Charting a profitable course through mine operations to acceptable mine completion requires that risk and opportunity management planning of the mine life begin as early as possible in the life cycle. Management targets and metrics are required to identify and navigate the course to successful mine completion based on economic, social and environmental criteria. This paper outlines the application of The Metrics NavigatorÖ principles to the life cycle of a mine site. In general, metrics are required to make key strategic ideas apparent, transforming those ideas into a manageable set of quantitative measures that guide communication and decision making. For example, the chemical industry has established metrics that focus on the life cycle impacts of its products and eco-efficiency of their processes. Other industry sectors have focused attention on workplace and community well-being outcomes. These management metrics are necessarily organisation-specific, aligned to stakeholdersÆ expectations and the strategic outcomes sought, as well as the cause-and-effect relationships underlying key issues. Recently, the Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI), a consortium of multi-national companies, developed The Metrics NavigatorÖ. The guidance document provides a structured process for assessing and developing metrics for key environmental, social, and economic issues based on business and stakeholder perspectives. It incorporates best practices learned from the chemical and other industry sectors and has since been applied to develop metrics that guide life cycle strategies. The paper examines how the life cycle of a mine site could benefit from experiences in other industry sectors where sustainability metrics have guided strategy. It considers the potential application of The Metrics NavigatorÖ process to the life cycle of a hypothetical Australian mine site using the processes that have been successful in other industry sectors.

MINE operators are concerned with temperature conditions in their mines, particularly the effects of high temperatures on the l1ealth and efficiency of tl1eir employees. This paper is written to focus attention on the variables of heat transfer between rock and air. It illustrates the difficulties of predicting the manner, and the extent, of heat transfer from theoretical concepts, prior to actual operation of a mine airway. There are ~1any sources of heat in mines. The most important is that of the rock surrounding the airway. This heat, in turn, is a product of the age of the rock, faulting, proximity to recent igneous activity, oxidation of sulphides, hot ground waters, etc. The sources of heat may be constant for any one mine, but they are far from constant when dealing with various mining districts or e1•en with a number of mines in the same district. A study consist in 20 column leach tests was performed for the "EI Arco" Copper ore deposit, located on Baja California, Mexico. The main purpose was to define the basic criteria like recovery and sulfuric acid consumption, for a commercial heap leach system design, to process the oxide Copper (Chrysocola) of the deposit. Leach parameters such as, amount of sulfuric acid in the cure solution, cure technique, particle size of the material, leach solution&apos;s flowrate application, leach solution&apos;s acid strength and height of the lifts, were evaluated to choose those parameters in which the results were the best ones for that particular design.

"This paper presents the development of a new grinding circuit steady-state modeling system. It is fundamentally based on the “functional performance equation”, which has now been used to improve the performance of numerous grinding circuits. This equation characterizes the two distinct efficiencies that are at work in a ball milling circuit, and how these relate to overall circuit productivity. It does so based on the particle size chosen to distinguish between coarse and fine (product size) material. Now, by applying it to all the material size classes, a simple yet reliable ball mill model was created. Combined with cyclone recoveries, the complete, detailed grinding circuit performance can be exactly reproduced mathematically by the computer program. It can then be used with separate process equipment application engineering methods to systematically engineer grinding circuit improvements. The development, features, uses and limitations of the system are described.INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CIRCUIT MODELThe Functional Performance Equation for Closed Circuit Ball (or Pebble) MillingIt has been shown that closed grinding circuit performance can be effectively characterized by the “functional performance equation” for closed ball or pebble milling circuits (McIvor, 2006a). One method of its derivation is summarized here for convenient reference.First select a cut-off size to define “coarse” versus “fine” or product size material for the grinding circuit. Any particle mesh size can be used to differentiate between coarse material and fines, but the circuit target P80 is often an effective choice for these purposes.Any energy expended on “fines” is wasted. It also generates “extreme fines” often detrimental to downstream processing (McIvor and Finch, 1991). Only the portion of the mill power draw that is expended on coarse material is effectively used. This portion can be estimated from the mill feed and discharge size distributions (McIvor, 1988a) by taking the average of the percentage of “coarse” material in the mill feed and discharge. We can define the thusly calculated percentage of the mill power that is expended on coarse material in the mill as the ball mill circuit “classification system efficiency” (CSEff). The “effective mill power” (EMP) can be calculated from the total mill power (TMP) as follows."

Although it has been apparent to me for a long time that too great weight was currently given to the silicon-contents of foundry-iron, and that the theory of the control by silicon of the carbon-contents of cast-iron is unsound, or that, at best, the influence of silicon is too small to be of much practical value as a guide in foundry-work, it never seemed to me desirable to enter the lists against either the " silicon-fad " or the theory, for the reason that I had neither the time nor the facilities to prove my position, nor any better theory to offer. But since Mr. Summers has taken the step, it seems but right that I should give such facts as are at hand in support of his contention. At the same time I do not think these are enough to prove the case if the contrary proposition were not itself, as it seems to me, based on insufficient evidence. Both Keep&apos;s and Turner&apos;s conclusions seem to be drawn from irons carrying less than the normal amount of carbon; Turner&apos;s " base " being, moreover, a steel rather than a pig-iron, and both the white base and the ferro-silicon of Keep being so low in carbon that compounds of them would not give a material approaching the carbon-contents of a normal casting, and having, therefore, little value as showing the effects of silicon on foundry-irons, even if his samples were treated under the same conditions as those to which pig-metal is subjected in making castings.

This brief resume of events, transpiring in Mexico, culled front the daily New York newspapers, since the last Bulletin-went to press, does not indicate any degree of improvement in the situation. RECORDS OF 217 MEXICO KILLINGS SUBMITTED BY AMBASSADOR FLETCHER Henry P. Fletcher, the American Ambassador to Mexico, called as the first witness before the Rules Committee of the House which has begun a preliminary inquiry into conditions in Mexico, which, it, is believed, will lead to a thorough and far-reaching investigation by a joint Senate and House Committee of the entire Mexican problem, submitted a list of the names of Americans officially known to have been killed in Mexico, a majority of them murdered in cold blood, since the overthrow of Porfirio Diaz by Maderoin 1911. The list contains 217 names and in comparatively few instances do the records show that arrests were made by the particular Mexican faction that happened to be in power where the crime was committed. In only one instance, that of John B. McManus, who was killed in March, 1915, was reparation made. It is significant that McManus was killed by Zapatistas, and Zapata officials apologized for the crime and paid to Mrs. McManus a voluntary indemnity of $20,000 in gold. Of the 217 persons listed as victims of the Mexicans, .137 perished since Carranza came into power. The list, it was admitted, is not complete. It was evident, says the New York Times, that the Ambassador considered the situation very serious.

The intent of this address is to look forward into the 21st Century and present certain thoughts as to how underground coal mining might be conducted. The views in this talk are based principally on the author&apos;s experience with mining practices in the United States. It may be difficult to accept, but the 21st Century is a mere 12 years away. What new techniques will be available? To develop an understanding of the way in which technology has been and could be changing, a two- stage analysis is made of mining technology for U.S. Coal. The first phase covers the period 1975 to the present, while the second includes 1960 to 1975. This historical perspective includes a view of underground production by mining methods, considerations of labour productivity, and a review of accident and fatality rates. Several topics are important features of this historical analysis. Among the most significant are: (1) the introduction of Ion-wall mining technology into U.S. underground coal mines, (2) the use of computers to assist in mine planning and design activities, (3) major efforts to improve health and safety performance, with emphasis on underground dust control, and (4) improvements in mining equipment with an eye towards increased reliability and up-time performance. Based on that historical perspective, projections are made in three increments.
