Bacterial leaching tests have been carried out on Portugese pyritic ores containing zinc, copper, lead and silver as valuable elements. Both indigenous and isolated strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were used. During the tests the factors pH, Eh and dissolved oxygen were measured and related to the leaching activity of the bacteria. Different means to estimate or determine the real bacteria concentration were examined. The influence of nutrient media and particle size has been evaluated. The role of galvanic couples was studied by electrical linking of mineralogical samples of pyrite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Leach residues were examined by optical microscopy to follow the mineralogical alterations during the leaching. The results show a rather good leaching of the sphalerite. However, the dissolution of copper from chalcopyrite is much more difficult, 50 % recovery never being obtained.

"INTRODUCTION Beneficiation of ores and minerals in a concentrator plant requires a significant amount of water [1] for the grinding and particle separation processes; most of it ends up being recirculated for reuse, slurry pumps are used after crushing and grinding feeding the ore to a classifier to separate fine-grained material (less than 5 mm) from coarse-grained material requiring further grinding. The optimum performance in mineral processing plants usually demands the optimum size reduction, which is frequently achieved by a closed grinding circuit. Due to the difficulty associated with fine size classification, the size separation efficiency in closed grinding circuit is usually very low, which leads to huge circulating load and significant overgrinding. Recent development of Der-rick Stack Sizer has made an efficient fine size separation down to 200 mesh with a satisfactory screening capacity. With the efficient fine size separation with Derrick Stack sizer, the problems commonly associated with typical closed grinding circuit, including high circulating load and over-grinding, have been eliminated. Feedback from numerous Stack Sizer applications in iron ore industry indicated that, compared with conventional fine size classification equipment, the circulating load achieved by Derrick screen was usually decreased from approximate 300% down to 60% or so, while the iron recovery has been increased by 6% to 8% only by more efficient size separation in the closed grinding circuit. To study this phenomenon, this paper discusses the relationship between size classification, circulating load and mineral recovery in the closed grinding circuit. A simulation model to predict the improvement in the grinding circuit from more efficient screening is also introduced with this paper.

The relative incerdivity of several blasting agents was evaluated in the Bureau's Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) . The minimum charge weights resulting in the ignition of predispersed oil shale dust clouds were measured for each of the explosives. A 400 g unstennned charge of ANFO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) was sufficient to initiate an oil shale dust explosion, whereas a 1000 g unstenuned charge of an emulsion blend did not ignite the dust even with the addition of 4% methane gas. Several stenuning materials were evaluated in the BEM for their effectiveness in preventing the ignition of near stoichiometric methane-air mixtures. Water stenuning was superior to all other inhibitors tested against methane. Explosibility testing of fine sulfide ore dust in a 20 L chamber and in the BEM show that the dust is capable of propagating an explosion given nominal concentrations of 700 to 800 g/m3. Results are encouraging and irrlicate that there is merit in pursuing explosive composition as a means of reducing ignition probability of oil shale and sulfide dust clouds generated during nonnal blasting operations. The proper selection of explosives and stenuning materials should significantly reduce the probability of secondacy dust explosions in oil shale and sulfide ore mining.

The Bureau of Mines has examined the operation of an oxygen sensor manufactured by the City University, London, England. The sensor produces a current proportional to the oxygen concentration by reacting oxygen at a nonconsumable cathode. The sensor design is unique in that the primary mode of oxygen transport to the cathode is by diffusion through a capillary, The sensor using this design has a stability of 0- to 0.02-pct reading change per day over a 4.7-month test, small temperature coefficient of 0.29-pct reading change per °C, and small pressure coefficient of 0.34-pct reading change per 1,000-ft altitude change, If this sensor were incorporated into an oxygen detector or monitor, this would be a distinct improvement in electrochemical-type oxygen analyzers and would be useful to the mining industry.

Helwan limestone quarry is located at a distance of 35 km (21.7 miles) to the south of Cairo downtown. Drilling and blasting operations are used to extract the limestone for the Helwan Cement Company (HCC). In 1980’s a new urban community was constructed adjacent to the quarry. This situation led to shifting of the old quarry 5.0 km (3.1 miles) to its current location, to avoid causing blasting problems to the new community. Unfortunately, the new quarry is opened in a highly faulted area, with weak zones of brittle materials. The drilling and blasting crew is facing many difficulties due to the geological complexity along these zones. Moreover, the extension of this community towards the new quarry makes the control of ground vibrations is very important.

From the mid-1970s ZC Mines at Broken Hill had a policy to increase ore production rates at progressively lower head grades. In the mid-1980s the mine suffered crippling losses at a time of low metal prices. An important contributory factor was the inherent geological distribution of metal grades in the seven defined ore lenses. Grades are bimodal, and perhaps, trimodal, in each ore lens. There is a tonnage deficiency in the critical cut-off grade zone of 7-10% Pb+Zn. Lowering the cut-off grade introduced siliceous and pyrrhotitic material which resulted in significantly poorer metallurgical performance. This example shows that the mine geologist needs to know the grade distribution of the orebody and to convey clearly the downstream implications of changes in the head grade.

POWER is furnished to the Climax Molybdenum Co. by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt line to a bank of three 3333-kva. Transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers arc so designed that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased 33 1/3 per cent at 12,000-ft. altitude. Under present conditions, these transformers are operated at 140 per cent of their rating with forced air cooling. On the secondary side of this bank there is a 15-kv., 1200- amp. Westinghouse oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station (Fig. I) where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches. MINE Power at 13.8 kv. enters the mine through a ventilation raise over a three-conductor, size 1-0 varnished cambric insulated, leaded, steel-wire armored cable, insulated from 17 kv. This power is received and distributed through one switching station and four underground substations, shown in Fig. 2. No. 370 substation (Fig. 3) contains three 250-kva, 13,800/440-volt, single-phase Pyranol transformers protected on the high-voltage side by a 600-amp. manually operated oil circuit breaker. This station serves 20 slusher-hoist motors, a 45-kw., three-phase, 220-volt electric furnace, a Massco hot miller for tempering and milling Timken detachable bits and a hoist with 175-hp. motor on the No. 3 development shaft. Also at this shaft are three pumps. One two-stage pump, 1200 gal, per min., 100-ft. head, 3600 r.p.m., driven by a 150-hp. motor, is at the bottom of the shaft. Two deep-well pumps, 500 gal. per min., 500-ft. head, are at the collar of the shaft. Under normal operation the one pumping 1200 gal. per min. is controlled by a float switch to take care of the water. If this pump fails, or if its capacity is insufficient, the first 500-gal. pump is automatically started, and if still more capacity is needed the second 500-gal. pump automatically starts. Time delay relays are provided on the deep-well pumps, so that if power fails the column will have time to drain before the pumps restart. On failure of any of these, an alarm is sounded in the train dispatcher's office, so that mechanics can be sent to ascertain the cause of failure and make repairs. The cable from No. 370 substation is run to the switching station, in which are four15-kv., 600-amp. direct-current solenoid-operated oil circuit breakers. The depressing effects of different inorganic chemicals on the flotation of pyrite have been investigated in this study. The results of the flotation tests indicate that pyrite can be depressed by oxidizing as well as reducing agents under controlled conditions of pH and reagent dosage. Oxidizing reagents such as potassium chromate and potassium dichromate were found to cause complete depression of pyrite in the acidic pH range. These effects are similar to those obtained in the pyrite-cyanide system. A less stable oxidant, potassium permanganate, inhibited the flotation of pyrite at a concentration as low as 0.1 mol/L at all pH values, Addition of reducing chemicals such as ferrous chloride or manganous sulphate to the flotation of pyrite were found to produce depressing effects depending on the additive concentration and pH of the solution.

In some parts of the Comarca Lagunera with population of about 2.5 million people, situated in the central part of northern México, chronic arsenic poisoning is endemic and severe adverse effects attributed to As exposure have been reported. Lifetime exposure to arsenic will develop classical symptoms of arsenic poisoning such as skin pigmentation changes, gastrointestinal disturbances and neurological changes. There are several methods available for removal of arsenic from well water in large conventional treatment plants, however a very promising electrochemical treatment technique that does not require the addition of chemicals or regeneration is Electrocoagulation (EC). The EC operating conditions are highly dependent on the chemistry of the aqueous medium, especially conductivity and pH. In this study, Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Transmission Mössbauer Spectroscopy (TMS) were used to characterize the solid products formed at iron electrodes during the EC process. This study will provide an introduction to the fundamental concepts of the EC method. Finally the results of this study suggest that the presence of maghemite and magnetite particles can be used to remove arsenic (III) and arsenic (V). In the field pilot plant scale study more than 99% removal of As species from groundwater is achieved.

Recently, coal fly ash has become a potential candidate as a secondary resource of rare earth elements (REE). In this investigation, we studied the recovery of REE from fly ash from a commercial power plant. The specific aim was to assess the technical feasibility of recovering REE from the coal fly ash using conventional preconcentration methods, including gravity separation, magnetic separation, and froth flotation. The experimental results revealed that flotation achieved major gains in REE recovery and upgrading. However, during gravity and wet magnetic separation tests, the bulk of REE reported to the tailings. The results showed significant variations in the performance of the various beneficiation methods investigated. This study has confirmed that existing physical separation methods could be used to recover REE from coal fly ash prior to hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processing, although some challenges persist.

"By the end of 2000, the first bio-oxidation plant in China that designed by ENFI come successfully into commercial operation in Yantai Gold Smeltery. Its capacity is 50t/d of refractory gold ore concentrate. After the extension, the capacity of bio-oxidation plant reached 80t/d of refractory gold ore concentrate at end of 2001.The refractory gold ore concentrate treated is from different gold mines. After proportionate feeding, the feed typically consists of Au (52.7g/t), S (24.42%), As (3.58%).The bacterial culture used in the bio-oxidation circuit is taken from a mine in south of China, and has been grown over 20 years on a variety of sulfide concentrates in a laboratory of mineral processing, and has shown to be adaptive to growth in a high concentrations of arsenic. It is a mixture of mesophilic microorganisms. The nutrients used in the bio-oxidation process are (NH4)2SO4, KH2PO4, KOH.Before feeding to bio-oxidation circuit, the concentrate would be milled to minus 43µm. The biooxidation product is fed to solid/liquid separation system that consists of a thickener and two press filters, solid from the system is fed to CCD circuit, liquid from the system is fed to neutralization area. The neutralized product is fed to another solid/liquid separation system, and the solid from the system is disposed of on a wasted quarry pit, the liquid from the system is returned to bio-oxidation circuit for reusing."

When times are tough in the mineral industry û as they have been for some time û typical responses by mining companies are to cut costs and/ or increase production. The latter is seen to spread fixed costs, thereby also reducing unit costs per tonne mined. However, most mineral deposits respond to increased production rates by lowering ore grades, so the reduction in cost per tonne of ore does not necessarily result in a reduced cost per unit of metal produced. The authorsÆ experience is that this process often leads to a mine plan that is a long way from optimal. Producing to the point where marginal cost equals marginal revenue may work well in a manufacturing operation, but it is not necessarily the best strategy for a mining company with a depleting resource. Variations in tonnage and grade with depth, ore reserve optimism and a variety of other factors conspire to produce variations in production rates and grade that often result in suboptimal outcomes and potential mine failure. Added to this is the focus of industry analysts and senior corporate management on such measures as unit costs and ounces in reserves. This is perceived to have the perverse effect of driving the share price down when strategies are adopted that actually improve the value of the mining operation, and vice versa! Many mine failures can be prevented by a close examination of the tonnage grade curve and an understanding of how margins, net cash flows and resulting business risk change with cut-off grades and rates of production. A few relatively simple analyses early in the evaluation of a project can demonstrate the tradeoffs between the main decision parameters, leading to right-sizing of the operation. Once major commitments to major capital items have been made, and reserves have been publicly reported, optimisation of the operation becomes much more difficult than if it had been done earlier. Such investigations can also identify the upside potential and downside risks associated with factors outside the companyÆs control. Many strategies that may enhance value in the good times significantly increase the downside risk in the bad times. What is often called risk analysis typically looks at superficial issues, and does not evaluate the major factors leading to the potential for financial disaster. This paper illustrates some of these major risks, and demonstrates how they may be fully evaluated so that corporate decision makers can make fully informed decisions that take account of the real risks.

(written discussion ? ).¬Sphalerite, as is well known, occurs not only as a common constituent of many types of ore deposits formed under widely varying geologic conditions, but its sulphide mineral associates comprise a goodly number of species. In the investigation by Mr. Teas, data were obtained from a mineralographic study of about 200 ore specimens from 43 different localities grouped according to their genesis as follows: (1) Contact-metamorphic deposits, (2) deep-vein zone deposits, (3) intermediate-vein zone deposits, (4) shallow-vein zone deposits, (5) meteoric water deposits. .The object of the study was to determine the relations of sphalerite to the associated sulphide minerals and their possible genetic significance. As a result of the investigation, Mr. Teas has deduced several important conclusions. Probably the one of largest interest and value was that sphalerite formed from magmatic waters, including contact-metamorphic, deposits, could be distinguished, for the cases investigated at least, from sphalerite formed from meteoric waters, by development in the former of minute triangular or rectangular dots or stringers of chalcopyrite. Although chalcopyrite inclusions in sphalerite had been noted by previous observers, the probable significance of their apparent general occurrence in sphalerite of certain types of ore deposits and their absence from others was unknown. The large number of ore specimens studied from more than 40 different localities in the United States and foreign countries, representing the principal genetic types of sphalerite-bearing deposits, gives considerable weight to the conclusions reached by the author. Should the conclusion drawn by Mr. Teas become generally applicable, a laboratory criterion of much value will have been established for distinguishing between sphalerite formed from juvenile and that from meteoric waters. The principle seems applicable not only to sulphide deposits in which sphalerite is the principal constituent, but to those in which it occurs as a very subordinate one, as shown by the study of ore specimens from one of the principal pyrite mines in Virginia. It may be possible also that the principle will have important application in differentiating primary from secondary sphalerite occurring in the same deposit formed from magmatic waters, although there have-been comparatively few well-

Methods evolved at Kellogg have had primarily in view the safety of workmen and complete recovery of the ore; it is believed that these results have been secured at a minimum cost. The ore in the Bunker Hill mine is of good grade, relatively speaking; much of it is quite rich and no mining method would be successful which did not recover all of the ore. It would be possible to work certain of the orebodies by shrinkage methods, or some form of top-slicing, at probably lower costs than by the methods now applied, but the shapes of the orebodies are so irregular that satisfactory extraction of the ore in all its ramifications would be extremely difficult. In past years, much high-grade ore has been lost in blasting, due to the unskilful use of powder in a galena ore, which, by reason of its brittle-ness and great weight, tends to scatter widely. Any method by which large masses of ore and waste are broken together will result in an imperfect recovery of the ore, and whenever large masses are broken, ore and waste will unavoidably fall down together; ore and waste thus become entangled and, although a pile of broken material may seem to have been well picked over, quantities of ore will inevitably be lost. This fact has been shown by persons reworking the filling in stopes that were mined by methods defective in the foregoing particulars. Safety of the men is secured by avoiding large openings, and by working mainly under timber, and at small faces at close range and easily inspected. In former years the principal source of serious accidents was "falls of ground;" it is now over seven years since a serious accident has occurred from this cause. The most prolific source of accidents during recent years has been "timber and tools," workmen being struck by timbers passed into the stope from the level above; this danger has been greatly reduced by compressed-air warning whistles and the fencing in of dangerous areas. The transformations in eutectoidal systems have been extensively studied as they occur in steels.&apos; As a consequence of these studies the martensite, bainite and pearlite reactions found for most steels are widely recognized. Further, because of the work of Smith and Lindlief2 and of Greninger and Troiano3 these reactions, except for the bainite reaction, are considered as typical for all eutectoidal systems. The primary alloy studied by Smith and Lindlief2 was a CuAl alloy of near eutectoid composition as was the alloy more recently studied by Mack.4 The transformations in these alloys were, for the most part, studied metallo-graphically, while an X ray analysis of structures was essentially wanting. It has appeared desirable, therefore, to investigate selected CuAl alloys at and slightly away from eutectoid composition. For this purpose three alloys were prepared containing 10.5,11.9 and 13.5 pct A1 respectively. The results of a metallographic and X ray analysis of structures obtained for isothermal transformation of the ß-phase are reported here for the 11.9 and 13.5 pct A1 alloys. Introduction The phase equilibria in the CuAl alloys of immediate concern are indicated in the equilibrium diagram section presented in Fig 1.5 The equilibrium and transition structures which have been reported in this system are as follows: a = copper rich terminal phase (f.c.c.) ß = high temperature eutectoidal phase (b.c.c.) r2 = aluminum-rich intermediate phase (r-brass structure) a&apos; = modified a-phase postulated by Bollenrath and Bungnrdt.26 ß1 = ordered ß (b.c.c.) ß&apos; = martensite structure: A1 < 13 pct (near h.c.p.) ß" = ß&apos; of Smith and Lindlief2 7&apos; = martensite structure: A1 > 13.5 pct (h.c.p.); ß2 of Bollenrath and Bungardt.26 The eutectoid transformation can be suppressed at sufficiently high cooling velocities. The ß-phase is then retained to about 500°C where ordering sets in. The ordering interval is not satisfactorily known but indirectly appears to be non-suppressible. Subsequent to the ordering reaction and consequently at lower temperatures, the ordered ß1 decomposes to a marten-sitic structure. The kinetics of these reactions and in particular those of the martensite reaction have an important bearing on the results obtained in this investigation. Since some confusion exists concerning certain reported aspects of these reactions, they will be considered in some detail. Following a long period of increase, there has been a reduction in exploration expenditure and activity in Australia over the past two years. During the post Second World War period, exploration was largely driven by mining companies seeking resources to satisfy an increase in world demand, while increasing their asset base as a result of mineral discoveries. In general, return on investment to shareholders was not the major driving force. With the exception of gold the mining industry has been faced with a long-term fall of metal prices in real terms. As a result the net profit return on average shareholderÆs funds in the Australian minerals industry has fallen from over 20 per cent in 1990 to less than five per cent today. Mining is now competing for funds with communication and finance based industries yielding high returns on shareholder investment. Shareholders and superannuation fund managers seeking a high return on short-term investments have indirectly reduced the funds available to the mining industry. Globalisation of the mining industry is leading to the rationalisation of the Australian mining industry as witnessed by mergers and acquisitions of local companies by foreign investors. The return on capital invested in the Australian mineral exploration industry must improve if the industry is to be competitive on a worldwide basis. Failure to achieve this will result in capital flowing overseas or to other industries. Relatively short-term upswings in metal prices which are generally driven by threats to the supply base (eg strikes, mine closures, increases in country risk) often lead to increased capital raisings for exploration funding. As a consequence of the time taken to raise the capital and increase exploration activity, measured exploration activity lags the metal price increases. There are also lags between commencement of exploration and discovery and ore production. In the case of gold exploration expenditure peaked six years after the price rise of 1980 Companies persevering with exploration in the current difficult period will be rewarded because they will be able to capitalise on future metal price rises and a minimised time lag.

"New Gold Inc.’s New Afton concentrator commenced operation in June 2012, producing a copper-gold-silver concentrate. During the first two years of operation, various optimization efforts have improved mill throughput, recoveries and concentrate grade. Daily mill throughput has increased 20% above the design rate. This was achieved through more consistent instantaneous feed rate and size distribution from the mine reclaim stockpile, higher pebble crusher reliability, changes to the SAG and ball mill grinding media sizes, larger SAG grate openings, reduced SAG discharge screen-deck aperture size and an increase in the maximum ball mill power draw limit. Metal recoveries at New Afton are primarily limited by liberation in the coarser size fractions; therefore, improving the grind size at a given mill throughput has been the main means of improving recovery. The average rougher flotation feed F80 size was reduced from 175µm in Q1 2013 to 165µm in Q1 2014, while the average operating mill throughput increased by 25%. Other flotation circuit changes focusing on recovery improvement include the addition of froth crowders to the rougher cells and the use of a stronger frother. The average concentrate grade increased from 22% Cu in Q1 2013 to 25% Cu in Q1 2014. This was achieved by redirecting the flash flotation concentrate stream to the regrind circuit and by the addition of lime to the cleaner circuit.This paper describes the above improvements made at the New Afton mill. The paper describes the objectives, timing and end result of each area of improvement.IntroductionThe New Afton Mine is situated approximately 10km west of Kamloops, British Columbia, 340km north-east of Vancouver. The mine has a moderate climate, access to transportation and electrical infrastructure, nearby fresh water supply, and close proximity to industrial and mining service businesses. This paper examines 5 years of SAGDesign testing data with particular emphasis on the grinding test results from two recent projects, the Fortune Minerals Limited NICO project, and the Aurora Energy Resources Inc., Michelin deposits, located in the Northwest Territories and in Labrador respectively. The context is to compare these results with the SAGDesign database. The required SAG mill pinion energy for these two ores showed vast differences, even though both ores had similar average Bond Ball Mill Work Index values - about 13 kWh/t each for the two deposits respectively. Bond Rod Mill Work Index values for NICO ranged up to 19.7 kWh/t for the hardest ore, confirming the harder nature of the coarse material. SAG mill pinion energy to grind the NICO cobalt-gold-bismuth-copper ore from F80 152 mm to T80 1.7mm varied from 16 to 35 kWh/t, while for Michelin uranium ore, it varied from 2 to 9 kWh/t. NICO ore is harder than any other material encountered to date using SAGDesign testing. SAG pinion energy is more than double the ball mill pinion energy using a transfer size T80 of 1.7mm and a final grind P80 of 74 microns. For NICO, the ore is ?off the charts? for simulation design techniques because there is no comparable operating SAG mill treating ore that is this macro-competent. For Aurora, the relationship between SAG and ball mill pinion energy is reversed in that the SAG mill requires less than half of the ball mill pinion energy using a transfer size T80 of 1.7mm and a final grind P80 of 90?. Because these discoveries are so important for grinding mill design, their impact will be dealt with in future papers, at the August METSOC Conference in Sudbury, and at the September SME Workshop in Tucson. It has now been concluded that the ratio of SAG pinion energy to Bond Ball Mill Work Index, is valuable data to use in designing a SAG/ball mill grinding circuit, to help choose the power split needed.
