Discussion by R.W. Hutchinson Minter's excellent recent paper (1990) on the great paleoplacer gold deposits of the Witwatersrand and its subsequent discussion (Cheney, 1991) and reply (Minter, 1991) provide an informative, interesting and up-to-date review of the geology of these unique ores and some long enigmatic questions regarding their origin. Clearly summarized by Minter (1990) are the compelling sedimentologic and stratigraphic relationships indicating that the Central Rand Group conglomerates are ancient placers and documenting the fluvio-deltaic conditions of their transport and deposition. As Minter (1991) indicates, Cheney's discussion broadens Minter's 1990 coverage of the subject by considering higher and lower stratigraphic units and by adding detailed comments concerning recently published information about metamorphic and age relationships. Cheney's discussion and Minter's reply also readdress the old controversy of epigenetic hydrothermal vs. syndepositional placer origin for these deposits. This controversy has been resurrected by: • recent recognition of hydrothermally-altered granites (HAGS) in the older Archean basement rocks that lie unconformably beneath the Dominion Group rocks north and west of the Witwatersrand depository; • recognition of greenschist metamorphic assemblages in the Witwatersrand strata; and • the presence of interpreted epigenetic mineral assemblages and textures in some of the deposits. These relationships are briefly discussed by Cheney who suggests they may result from later, superimposed metamorphism and deformation and do not prove that the gold was introduced by epigenetic/metamorphogenic processes. In his paper, Minter (1990) cited the 1986 abstract of a subsequently published paper by Hutchinson and Viljoen (1988) who also considered many of these aspects and attempted to integrate them all in abroad genetic hypothesis. In addition, they emphasized the additional important problem of determining the source for the Witwatersrand gold. Although this issue was partially addressed by Reimer (1984), Mossman and Dyer (1985) and Reimer and Mossman (1990), the question has been generally under emphasized in earlier work and was, therefore, not stressed by Minter and Cheney. Reimer (1985) also emphasized the importance of weathering of the basin's Archean hinterland and its affects on Witwatersrand sedimentation. Since the epigenetic hydrothermal hypothesis was essentially discarded in favor of placerist origin, the gold source for these great deposits has generally been attributed to the weathering of lodes in greenstones or granites of the uplifted, older Archean hinterland to the north and west. However, Hutchinson & Viljoen (1988) present evidence that this explanation is inadequate, as well as data in support of an alternative explanation. They suggest that the gold and accompanying abundant, clearly detrital and auriferous pyrite in the conglomerate reefs were derived by erosional degradation of auriferous-pyritic exhalite previously deposited, by shallow marine discharge of hydrothermal fluids, along the fault-bound northwestern margins of the Witwatersrand depository. The auriferous-pyritic exhalites were generated by fluid-rock reactions in the subsurface, particularly in the highly-altered lavas of the Dominion Group but also in adjacent basement granitic rocks. The process envisaged is comparable to that observed in sea floor hydrothermal systems today, although, in this case, it occurred at the margin of a rapidly subsiding, shallow marine or continental basin. Important evidence for this explanation is the anomalous gold content of the ferruginous, shaley strata occurring throughout the Witwatersrand Supergroup and including the distinctive contorted bed that is an iron formation. These layers have been interpreted (Hutchinson and Viljoen, 1988 and 1990) to represent the more distal, finer-grained, mixed chemical/clastic sedimentary strata. Thus, they are the basinal equivalents of the proximal, auriferous-pyritic exhalites that were deposited along the basin's margin and subsequently reworked by sedimentary processes. This gold source explanation resolves many of the enigmatic questions regarding Witwatersrand geology and the reawakened controversy between proponents of hydrothermal and placerist genetic hypotheses. The theory invokes a hydrothermal origin for the gold in the basin-margin pyritic exhalites, thus explaining the visible hydrothermal characteristics (Figs. 1 and 2). It also provides compelling evidence for placer origin by encompassing all of the fluvio-deltaic processes of clastic sedimentary transport and deposition that are clearly summarized by Minter. These characteristics result from the degradational reworking of the pyritic exhalites along the depository's margins. Fluvial reworking, transport and deltaic redeposition of this detritus, along with additional detritus carried into the depository from the hinterland, then formed the conglomerate reefs. Other enigmatic aspects of Witwatersrand geology include: • the rarity of magnetite and ilmenite (the two most common heavy minerals in placer deposits) and the contrary abundance of leucoxene in the conglomerate reefs; • the presence of differing varieties of pyrite (authigenic, allogenic, compact and porous) all of which are auriferous; and • the presence of well-rounded pebbles, even cobbles, of pyrite that, in view of the brittleness of the mineral, could not have been transported great distances from a hinterland.

Tile sharp-yield point found in magnesium crystals in the solulion-treated and aged condition is studied by dislocation internal-friction experiments. The results show that the sharp yield is not file to the sudden release of pinned dislocations hut is movc likely due to the rapid multiplication of an initially small number of dislocations. Recovery or the dislocation internal friction after deformation is also studied. This yecovery results from the re-pinning of dislocations by a solute, presumably nitrogen, which moves with a relatively small activation energy. SHARP-yield points, when they occur, are a striking feature of the stress-strain curve generated during a tensile test. Although commonly associated with steel, sharp yielding has been found in a variety of metallic and nonmetallic crystalline materials. In particular, sharp-yield points have been found in zinc"' and cadmium3 containing nitrogen. With this background, Geiselman and Guy4 investigated the tensile properties of magnesium single crystals containing nitrogen to see if sharp yielding also occurs in this system. They found that sharp yields did indeed occur in solution-treated and aged specimens tested at elevated temperature but were not able to give conclusive proof that the sharp yield was caused by nitrogen, a yield drop being observed even in their purest crystals. Sharp-yield points have also been found in various polycrystalline magnesium alloys.7'8 In the study of the sharp-yield phenomenon it is desired to observe the behavior of dislocations in the earliest stages of the deformation process. Internal-friction experiments are useful for this purpose because dislocation damping is sensitive to the mobility of free-dislocation segments. At low strain amplitudes the damping, A, due to the the forced vibration of dislocation segments of average length L is ? =KAL4 [1] where A is the dislocation density and K, if the applied frequency is well below the resonant frequency of the dislocation segments? is a constant for the sample under observation.5 Dislocation damping, because of the fourth-power dependence on L, is particularly sensitive to the creation of free-dislocation segments during deformation. Since sharp yielding is associated with the sudden release of pinned-dislocation segments, marked changes in the dislocation damping are expected at the yield point.6 The use of the dislocation-damping observations to help elucidate the incompletely understood mechanism of yielding in magnesium is the primary objective of the experiments reported here. PROCEDURE Many investigations have shown that very marked and rapid changes occur in the dislocation damping of of a deformed material as soon as the straining is stopped.5 It was quite essential, then, for the purpose of this investigation, to make the damping measurements during the deformation of the samples. This can only be accomplished through the use of the ultrasonic-pulse method. In this method traveling sound-wave pulses are used and, in contrast to resonating-bar methods, only the sample ends are set in vibration. Thus, the sample can be gripped along its sides in the tensile-test machine without disturbing the damping measurements. In the pulse method, the decrease in the amplitude of a sound pulse is measured as it travels back and forth through the sample. If A is the amplitude after traversing a distance x and A. is the initial amplitude, A=Aoe-ax [2] and a is called the attenuation. It is commonly measured either in units of cm-I or as db per µ sec. The observed attenuation in a metal sample is due to a number of causes. These include scattering by grain boundaries and impurity particles, thermo-elastic damping, diffraction effects, stress-induced ordering of solute atoms, and dislocation damping. The total observed attenuation in a given sample usually cannot be resolved into these various components, but changes in a due solely to changes in dislocation damping can be accurately determined, provided the experiment is arranged so that all other sources of damping are held constant. It is desired to reduce the extraneous sources of attenuation to a minimum and for this reason the experiments are done on single crystals of high purity. Magnesium crystals offer the further advantage that, when properly oriented, only a single set of slip planes is active during deformation. Crystal Preparation. The method of sample preparation is similar to that of Geiselman and Guy.4 The starting material was high-purity, sublimed magnesium rod supplied by the Dow Chemical Co. Every operation connected with the working of a deep-level mine has, to a greater or lesser extent, a direct bearing on the costs of production, and hence, profitability of the mine. If adequate mine planning is not done in the early stages in the life of a mine, considerable expenditure can result from the cost of maintaining mine service tunnels, production delays in stopes caused by poor strata control, distortion of fittings in hoisting shafts, rockbursts and so on. In fact, the optimum profitability of a deep-level, hard-rock mine can only be achieved if the layout of the shaft systems, ore passes, tunnels, stoping areas and other underground excavations are designed to withstand or accommodate the rock stress conditions that will be created by mining operations. In South Africa where the deepest mines in the world are located, access to the underground workings of most deep-level gold mines is via vertical shaft systems and a network of tunnels connecting the shaft systems to the stoping areas. In current practice, there are two basic methods of extracting the gold-bearing reef,* namely, the scattered stoping method and the longwall stoping method. The choice of the stoping method is governed largely by the anticipated gold distribution and payability of the reef in the area, the geological conditions, the degree and complexity of faulting and dyke intrusions, the depth at which the gold-bearing reef is to be mined and the inclination and width of the reef. The longwall system was first introduced at the East 717 Rand Proprietary Mines Limited in 1942 in an effort to combat the rockburst hazard which appeared to increase with increase in depth. This mining method became standard practice on that mine for stoping operations 700 ft. below the surface. Since that date, several deep mines on the Central Rand, East Rand and West Wits gold mining areas have adopted this method.

Much has been written of the changes undergone by coal in storage and the deterioration of coal through exposure to the weather. In order to obtain definite information for the benefit of the Government departments and of all who store coal in large quantitieS', a series . of tests was begun in the fall of 1909 under the supervision of tT. A. Holmes, then chief technologist of the United States Geological Survey, and was continued by the Bureau of Mines after its establishment in 1910. The tests were confined to determinations of the loss in heating value of the coals and did not include a study of other deterioration; for exaIp.ple, in coking quality or the yield of by-products in coking. The Bureau of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department cooperated in tests of New R~ver (W. Va.) coal, a variety largely used by the Navy. A preliminary report presenting a brief account of the early results of these tests has been published by the Bureau of Mines as Technical Paper 16.a The detailed report is presented in this bulletin, which gives a fu11 account of the tests and the analytical data covering a period of five years' storage. Data of somewhat similar experiments for shorter periods with gas coal from the Pittsburgh bed, with Pocahontas coal on the Isthmus of Panama, and with Sheridan, Wyo., subbituminous coal, which is used for railroad and other purposes in the West, are included. The tests of New River coal, in cooperation with the Navy Department, were undertaken to determine the advantage to be gained by storing coal under water, and particularly under salt water. Small lots were used in order to make the tests of maximum severity, and parallel experiments were made with run-of-mine and crushed coal under one-fourth inch size. All of the small lots tested under the different conditions (except those tested near Key West, Fla.) were taken as representative portions from one large original lot. The tests of Pocahontas coal, which, like the New River, is semibituminous, were undertaken chiefly to determine th.e effect of the tropical conditions in Panama. They were made on an outdoor pile of 100 tons of run-of-mine coal. Pittsburgh gas coal, a high-volatile, bituminous type used at gas and by-product coke works, was exposed for test at Ann Arbor, Mich., in cooperation with the University of Michigan. The university agreed to make tests at successive intervals of storage to determine, in its illuminating-gas experiment station, the yields of gas and byproducts from the coal. The coal, screened lump, was stored in about 4-ton lots out of doors in open bins. Subbituminous coal, which is mined in Colorado, Wyoming, and other States, and is known also as "black lignite," is commonly supposed to deteriorate rapidly in storage, especially by "slacking" or crumbling of the lumps. The tests herein described were undertaken at Sheridan, Wyo., in cooperation with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co., in order to determine the extent of this slacking and the accompanying loss of heat value. The tests were in open bins holding 4 to 12 tons.

The purity of the electrolyte has an important influence on the content of the impurities in electrodeposited silicon. In this paper, effects of electrolysis temperature, current density and the time on the concentrations of two important impurities: phosphorus and iron in the electrolyte were investigated during the purification of Na3AlF6-10%K2SiF6-AlF3 melt. It was observed that the concentrations of P and Fe in the electrolyte decreased with the electrolysis temperature, current density and the electrolysis time increasing. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) of the electrolyte shows that the concentrations of P and Fe decrease from 4.2ppmw to 1.3ppmw and 204.0ppmw to 42.6ppmw, respectively. The removal rates of P and Fe are 69.08% and 79.12% when the electrolysis was performed for the duration of 3 hours and at a current density of 20mA·cm-2 while the operating temperature was 1225K.

Secondary recovery projects often are not started in oil reservoirs until dictated by rising GOR's or declining oil production. Such circumstances require a well dispersed injection pattern to prevent the oil bank from bypassing the production wells. Many times this purpose is served by using the five-spot or line-drive patterns, in which half of the wells are made injection wells. A regular injection pattern is proposed that is based on the same well spacing as the five-spot but in which only a third of the wells need be converted to injection wells. Fluid flow model studies on this proposed pattern show that production histories will be as good as those for a five-spot pattern at mobility ratios of three and above. The model data are presented in a form that may be used to predict recoveries from both homogeneous and stratified formations. Introduction The injection of fluid into a petroleum reservoir usually is prompted by an actual, or predicted, loss in the productivity of the reservoir. Often, an oil reservoir is produced by pressure depletion until high GOR's dictate a change in policy. Fluid injection also causes increased ultimate recovery, but this usually is of less importance to the operator than is the maintenance of the production rate. It is a fact that the ultimate recovery in any particular fluid injection project is relatively independent of the number and spacing of the injection wells as long as the reservoir voidage through the production wells is balanced by the total injection rate. However, the response of a production well is directly affected by the distance it lies from an injection well. In places where the well productivities are declining, the injection wells should be spaced as evenly as possible among the producing wells ("dispersed" injection pattern). More particularly, if the production response depends upon the formation (and subsequent production) of an oil bank, each production well should be surrounded by injection wells. Otherwise, the oil productivity will increase very little as the oil bank moves past the well.'.' An evenly spaced injection pattern has the best chance of generating an oil kick in the production wells. If reservoir voidage and injection rates are to be equal, the ratio of injection wells to production wells must be equal to the ratio of the average injectivity to the average productivity (in reservoir volumes). This ratio is in strumental in choosing the injection pattern. Table 1 shows the production well to injection well ratio for the dispersed injection patterns that have been described in the literature.'-' All of these patterns will have comparable recoveries and response times (for the same basic distance between wells). The choice of pattern there fore depends upon the relative injectivity and productivity of the wells and upon the type of drilling pattern employed. Another important factor may be the ability of the proposed production wells to make up the lost productivity from those wells converted to injectors. These factors become more pronounced at the higher oil viscosities (low gravity oils). All other things being equal, the probable ratio of single well injectivity to single well productivity will be equal to the water-oil mobility ratio of the proposed flood. Thus, high mobility ratios (due to low gravity oil) should call for fewer injection wells — as long as these injection wells are "dispersed" to obtain more even pro duction response for the remaining wells. Secondary re covery projects in oil reservoirs seldom, if ever, will have mobility ratios requiring more injection wells than production wells. Thus, only the last five of the patterns listed in Table 1 will be of significant interest in oil recovery. The Karst asbestos deposit, discovered seventy years ago, is 32 miles south of Bozeman in southwestern Montana. The deposit is about one-half mile west of the Gallatin River which flows in a deep V-shaped valley flanked on either side by rugged mountains. The Madison range is west of the river and the Gallatin range lies to the east. A busy all-weather highway, U.S. No. 191, follows the river and is the major north-south route between Bozeman and the Gallatin valley to the north and Idaho and the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park to the south. The asbestos deposit is a large body of serpentinized peridotite in which anthophy11ite.occurs, both as distinct veins and as a disseminated mineral in the peridotite mass. The known exposures of the asbestos-bearing rock occur on a steen south slope at an "elevation of about 7000 feet, an elevation 'which is about 1200 feet above the Gallatin River. Over the years, a number of small companies have attempted to exploit the Karst asbestos deposit without continuing success. The present operator, Galaxy Mining Corporation, has attempted a systematic approach to the problem by utilizing geologic and engineering surveys to determine the economic and technical feasibility of a mine and plant to produce a finished asbestos pro-duct. The results of this work indicate a high probability of success for the project. However the company now faces that dilel1lJllB so common to the non-metallic mineral business; that is, whether to continue a research program of further mineralogical and technological studies in conjunction with detailed market surveys or to rely on the work done to date and embark on a pilot progril1n

This paper presents the results of a production experiment evaluating the effect of the use of oxygen in the bessemer converter with respect to its relation to blowing time, amount of steel scrap or cold pig iron which can be melted and teeming temperatures of the molten steel. THE simplest and probably the most efficient and economical means for producing steel from molten pig iron is the bessemer converter. This process is essentially a mechanism for bringing oxygen into contact with the molten metal thereby oxidizing the elements silicon, manganese, and carbon. The source of oxygen is that contained in the air and is limited by that amount. In theory, there is an intermediate chemical reaction due to the mass action of iron and air which is represented by the equation: 2Fe + O2- = 2Fe0 The FeO then becomes the oxidizing agent and reacts with the silicon, manganese, and carbon to produce silicon dioxide (SiO,), manganese oxide (MnO), and carbon monoxide (CO), in the order mentioned. The balancing of the various chemical reactions shows that in the ordinary bessemer process more than sufficient oxygen is delivered to satisfy these reactions, which indicates that a further increase in the oxygen content of the air would serve no useful purpose. In spite of this reasoning, however, it will be demonstrated that when melting stelel scrap, commercially pure industrial oxygen introduced into the normal air blast will permit the melting of a larger proportion of steel scrap than is possible with air alone and also will increase the production rate by a substantial reduction in blowing time. It will also be shown that when melting cold pig iron, it is possible to melt up to twice as much pig iron with the use of oxygen as can be melted without added oxygen with a nominal increase in blowing time. At the plant where this study was made, oxygen is purchased from a nearby supplier and piped directly into the plant. It is supplied to the bessemer converter by being introduced directly into the blast line through an automatic control system which may be adjusted by the bessemer operator or "blower." Normally, iron is supplied by five blast furnaces to an open hearth shop containing twelve 165-ton capacity stationary furnaces and a bessemer converting shop having three 30-ton converters. The molten metal from the blast furnaces is allocated to one shop or the other in a manner to best provide for maximum production. At various times, it is desirable to direct the maximum amount of available blast furnace production to the open hearth shop. This has the effect of reducing the production of the bessemer shop. When this condition exists, it is desirable to supplement the reduced iron charge at the bessemer with steel scrap or cold pig iron to the maximum possible extent in order to maintain high total ingot production. This condition becomes aggravated when one of the blast furnaces is taken out of production for any repair job and particularly for extended periods such as when relining is necessary. The purpose of the investigation and experimentation with oxygen was to determine whether or not it would contribute to increased flexibility in the use of the raw materials, molten iron, steel scrap, and cold pig iron. In addition to the effect of oxygen on flexibility of operation, it was also necessary to determine the relation of its use to production rate or "blowing time," final finishing temperature of the steel or "teeming temperature," and steel quality.

Remote and isolated, located in a frigid, hostile environment, the Black Angel mine in Greenland had to create a warm social environment which would help attract and retain a stable work force of miners and support staff. The high cost of personnel turnover plagues many mines and, when the mine is inside the Arctic Circle, accessible by helicopters which are highly vulnerable to unpredictable weather conditions during the long, dark winters, the potential costs of personnel turnover become critical factors in the success or failure of the mining venture. Manpower planning should start from the date the engineers begin the technical design of the new mine. The plan should include provisions not only to ensure an adequate, skilled work force, but also to ensure a stable work force of people who are happy enough in the mining environment to want to remain, take their vacation and return to work at the mine. The skilled work force was assured with training courses of four months, designed to produce highly specialized underground workers from unskilled Danes and Greenlanders supported by trained Swedish and other Scandinavian miners. The stable social unit was assured by plans the primary attribute of which had to be flexibility. The accommodation changed from shared accommodation with communal washroom facilities to single accommodation with private washroom facilities. A recreational director was hired to help the workers make use of elaborate recreational facilities. A closed-circuit TV and radio system was installed to operate as a private broadcasting system using taped programs originally broadcast on European TV networks or developed by the mine personnel themselves. The liquor rules were changed and the mine manager became a licensed innkeeper responsible for the orderly operation of the Black Angel Bar in accordance with the Danish laws governing the services of a public bar. The result is a relatively stable work force. Some 35% of the people have more than two years' service with the company, Greenex A/S, and some 62% complete 10 months of service.

"In this study, the authors investigated the stabilities of slopes cut predominantly into Trenton limestone in a large quarry in the Montreal region. Analyses of the bench and pit walls indicated that small-scale toppling, ravelling, and wedge failures are the most likely modes of instabilities. Because most of the joints dip steeply, however, the conclusion was made that relatively high walls could probably be justified.The field investigations were supplemented with the determinations of the shearing strengths of artificial discontinuities that were cut into samples of the limestone. The properties of a fine-grained limestone were found to be influenced very much by the magnitudes of the loads that were applied, while the properties of a crystalline limestone were found to be much less, or not load-dependent.The study is one of a number that are being conducted in this area.IntroductionExtensive quarrying has been done in the sedimentary strata of the Montreal area for a very long time. By any standards, it can be said that the Island of Montreal is a major mining area. At present, approximately 20 quarries are being operated in, or near, the city of Montreal.In addition to the millions of tons of limestone that are removed each year, a large number of excavations for foundations are cut into the sedimentary rocks.To date, however, very little information has been published concerning the engineering properties of the local geological materials. No mention is made of this aspect in the references which are presently available.Because of this lack of information, the senior author has initiated a study in which the strength properties of most of the rock types, and of the natural discontinuities contained in these, would be investigated. To date, the results of one other investigation have been published and other work is in process. It is hoped that the end result will be a comprehensive knowledge of the important strength properties of all of the rocks in the entire region."

In order to solve the problems of supporting the roof of the gateroads affected by a fault, the movement characteristics of roof strata must be fully understood. In this paper, a plane stress physical simulation model was constructed to study roof strata displacement and deformation of gateroads driven in the hanging wall of the fault after the coals in the footwall were extracted. The results indicated that, due to the effect of fault, vertical cracks, orienting parallel to the dip of the fault, occurred in the horizontal direction of the model within the areas affected by the fault. The roof strata are discontinuous. On the other hand, non-uniform subsidence of roof strata occurred due to the bedding plane separation in the vertical direction. Roof strata, especially the lower roof strata, dip toward the fault. Failure of the surrounding strata is not symmetrical with the roof and floor close to the fault being deformed severely. In the selection of type of supports for the gateroads, the U-shaped steel supports are superior to roof bolting.

An analog computer study was made of the reduction of the magnitude of the SP by formation geometry and resistivity effects. Practical field .situations were studied. The analog data were converted to the form of departure charts. These charts may he used to determine the reduction in the SP due to the above eflects pith good precision Quantitative interpretation of the SP log in terms of formation water resistivity is presently based on the premise that the observed SP is equal to the electrochemical potential developed across a shale between the mud filtrate and the formation water. This procedure inherently assumes that, first, no electro kinetic (streaming) potential is present, and, second, that the SP is not reduced by resistivity or geometry effects in the formation. When, however, such a reduction of the observed SP does occur, one may write, SP = b,E, b, E, (1) where SP is the observed self-potential opposite the center of the bed under consideration. In this case, E, is the electrochemical potential, E, is the electrokinetic potential, b, is the electrochemical reduction factor, and h, is the electrokinetic reduction factor. The first assumption above is equivalent to assuming E, = O in Eq. 1 and the second assumption is equivalent to h, = b, = 1. Examination of electric logs shows that for many formations of interest the observed SP is reduced below its maximum value. The object of this work is to aid quantitative SP interpretation in at least some of these situations by obtaining values for b, and b, in Eq. 1 as functions of realistic combinations of bed thickness, depth of invasion, and formation resistivity. The only previously published work in this field known to the authors is by H. G. Doll' in 1948. He evaluated b, under conditions permitting exact analytical solution. His work clearly established the importance and qualitative nature of formation geometry and resistivity effects upon the SP, but the necessity of obtaining analytical solutions restricted his study to situations of limited practical interest. In order to extend such studies to practical combinations of formation parameters which do not lend themselves to feasible analytical solutions, the results reported in this paper were obtained by use of a special analog computer. THE ANALOG MODEL The analog model used for this study was the Guyed Analog Computer which originally was designed and built for resistivity log departure curve studies. It consists of a two-dimensional mesh of resistors, with the vertical mesh corresponding linearly to vertical distance along the borehole, and the horizontal mesh corresponding to radial distance from the borehole axis. By proper choice of horizontal resistor values, a three-dimensional, axially symmetric, borehole-formation problem can be modeled with this two-dimensional array. These and other details of the model are contained in a paper by H. Guyod'. The geometry used for the SP studies with the analog is depicted in Fig. 1. This configuration has a horizontal plane of symmetry, and, hence, the model, and the following discussion, need only to be concerned with one quadrant such as shown in Fig. 2. A further simplification arises by considering that both the natural potential sources and those used in the model have fixed internal impedance. It is proposed to describe in this paper as accurately as possible the present practice at the Utica mills, of which I am superintendent. The Utica Company operates three mills, the Madison (40 stamps), the Utica (60 stamps), and the Stickle (60 stamps). My description will be based on the last-named, in which I have experimented more than in either of the other two; but the practice is the same, under the same management, in all three. Everything is run by water-power, under about 420 feet fall at the Utica mill, and 425 feet at the Stickle mill, giving a pressure of about 185 pounds to the square inch. The Madison mill is situated about three-quarters of a mile below the Utica and Stickle mills, and has only some 100 feet fall from one place, and 38 feet fall from the other. The water that runs the Utica and Stickle mills, and all machinery connected with the corresponding mines, is conveyed through ditch and pipe to the Madison mine and mill, where it develops power for the air-compressor and the 40-stamp mill. In this paper, the differential equations governing the mass transport and the electrochemical reaction in a cathode catalyst layer of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are solved based on the polynomial series expansion method. Explicit expressions for the polarization curve as well as for the distributions of oxygen, current density and overpotential are obtained when a quadratic, cubic or quartic polynomial is employed to approximate the oxygen concentration distribution. These kinds of explicit solutions are desirable for MEA design and diagnosis purposes. The comparison between the conventional numerical approach and the explicit solution approach proposed here shows that satisfactory accuracy can be reached by the first four terms of the polynomial series. The effect of the catalyst layer thickness on the accuracy of the obtained explicit polynomial solutions is also discussed.

The production of sponge iron is one of the earliest arts in the metal¬lurgy of iron and steel. The idea of producing iron direct from ore at temperatures lower than the melting point of, the iron has persisted throughout the centuries. The purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the methods, proposed or tried within the past 100 years, for producing sponge iron by treating hot ore with heated reducing gases. The abundant literature has been abstracted, and quoted freely. Publications concerning more detailed information on the various methods are referred to in the footnotes and in the bibliography.

WINCHELL, Minneapolis, Minn.-There are two questions I should like to ask: First, does the Department still adhere to the decision made in the East Tintic case? Second, does the Department require placer ground to he of such value that, in the opinion of the Forest Service employees, it will pay to work, before admitting the location to be valid? T. C. HOYT,* Ogden, Utah.-With reference to the first question: the Department does not hold to that decision, as it was reconsidered by the Secretary Of the Interior, and the Department is governed by the decision of the Secretary Of the Interior, on those points always. The Department of Agriculture makes no decision as to what constitutes a sufficient discovery. The mineral examiners simply report their findings and Opinions. These are transmitted to the chief of the field division of the General Land Office, who in turn transmits the reports to the Commissioner Of the General Land Office, who decides whether the report raises an issue requiring a hearing. If a hearing is ordered, expert testimony is given on the question of the discovery, as well as the evidence of practical people who operate in the vicinity of the claim in question. As to the extent of placer values considered sufficient to justify a location, my answer will need a little amplification. I couldn't answer it directly for the reason that sometimes people resort to placer claim location as a means of acquiring land for Other purposes than placer mining, which makes it absolutely necessary that the government give close attention to the question of whether good faith has been shown, as it is the evidences of good faith that largely determine whether a report adverse to a claim shall be made. That is a difficult point to cover sometimes. For instance, in the region I have recently visited there are some 17 miles of a valley, from ¼ to ¾ mile in width, all covered by placer locations. It is valuable stock-grazing land, and is stocked at the present time. It also contains a stand of timber, and is on the watershed of an important stream-important from the fact that it furnishes the water supply to government storage reservoirs, and to pending reclamation and Carey Act projects. In this case the placer claims will not be disturbed as mere locations. They will simply remain there, and there will be no action with reference to them until the claimant asks for patent or, before patent, begins to denude that watershed and remove that timber. In Germany the automobile recycling is regulated by law. Current legislation requires that by the year 2015, eighty five w.-t. % of the components from used cars ill be materially recycled. Whilst for 10 w.-t. % of the materials a thermal utilization is certified, there are still some concrete questions that remain unanswered regarding the usability of single fractions. The recent innovative approaches to the concepts of used cars dismantling do not alter the fact that the majority of the materials of used cars still have to pass over the shredder and the connected processing aggregates. The status of the so called SLF (Shredder light fraction) which is about 25 w.-t. % w.-t. in used cars, has not been satisfactorily clarified. Furthermore questions still remain regarding the separation of the NMSF (nonmagnetic metal shredder fraction) which has to be separated in the single metallic fractions like stainless tell, copper, brass, zinc, etc. Attempts of optimization can be found. This paper analyses some of the difficulties being encountered by the automobile recycling industry in Germany, before reviewing some of the innovative approaches that the industry has introduced. Finally the paper goes on to describe the potential of automatic picking. Examples of a series of tests, utilizing this technology, in which a variety of products from a range of shredders were isolated are described in detail. This new technology provides a range of applications to the automobile recycling industry.

Practically all underground work on the Minnesota iron ranges is done by miners working on a so-called contract wage system. This system, while it has certain advantages over the straight day's pay or company-account method of wage payment, has serious and vital defects. In view of the scarcity and demands of labor, it is important that employers of labor scrutinize their systems of wage payments carefully, not only to save losses and trouble, due to labor disturbances, but also to secure the greatest efficiency of their workmen and reduce their operating costs. It is admitted that an adequate, just, and equitable wage is the prime factor in bringing about these benefits. The wage of labor and its method of application and payment have been, and always will be, the main factors in the unrest and dissatis. faction of labor. Not only does labor want and need an adequate wage, assuming that work is adequately performed, but it wants and is entitled to a just and equitable wage. Labor must have respect for the fairness of the wage and for the fairness of the management in the application of the wage It is conceded that the Minnesota iron miners are now, and have been, in the main paid adequately, but the inherent defects of the so-called contract system prevent any just or equitable application of this wage to the various units of the labor body. The defects of the contract system, with its obvious inequalities, favoritisms, and injustices, are cancers in the brain of labor. Every thinking miner realizes these defects and knows just what they are; the unthinking do not realize the details of the subject, but each month they are forcibly reminded of these defects through the pay envelope. As practiced on the iron ranges, however, the so-called "contract " system is not a contract and the name is a misnomer. No true contractual obligation exists. As usually practised, the contract system involves the setting of a price per foot in development work, or per foot or per car, usually the latter, in slicing or stoping, by the mining captain, and assumes its acceptance, though often under protest, by the men. A price is set for each working place, in which there are usually two men per shift. This price includes labor and supplies, such as explosives, fuse and caps, shovels, carbide, etc., and the men divide the total earnings less the amount expended for supplies. The character of the Er-D system was established by determining pressure-temperature-composition relationships. A Sieuerts&apos; apparatus was employed to make measurements in the temperature range, 473" to 1223"K, the composition range of erbium to ErD3, and the pressure range of 10~s to 760 Torr. The system is characterized by three homogeneous phase regions: the nzetal-rich, the dideuteride, and the trideuteride phases. These phases and their solubility boundaries were deduced from the family of isotherms of the system zchich relate the pressure-temperature-composition variables. The equilibrium plateau decomposition relationships in the two-phase regions were determined from can&apos;t Hoff plots to be: The differential heats of reaction in these two regions are AH = - 53.0 * 0.2 and -20.0 *0.1 kcal per mole of D2, respecticely. The differential entropies of reaction are AS = - 36.3 * 0.2 and - 31.0 * 0.2 cal per mole D2. deg, respectively. Relative partial molal and intepal thermodynamic quantities were calculated from the pure metal to the dideuteride phase. The study of the Er-D system was undertaken as a logical complement to an earlier study of the Er-H system.&apos; The primary interest was to compare the characteristics of the two systems and relate the difference to the isotopic effect. Studies of rare earth-deuterium systems by other investigators have been very limited in number and scope. Furthermore, there is even less information available wherein an investigator has systematically compared a binary rare earth-hydrogen system with the corresponding rare earth-deuterium system. The available information consists primarily of dissociation pressure measurements in the plateau pressure region of a few rare earths. Warf and Korst&apos; determined dissociation pressure relationships for the La- and Ce-D systems in the plateau region and several isotherms for each system in the dideuteride region. They compared these data with those of the corresponding hydrided systems. The study of these systems as a whole was very cursory and did not give sufficient data for a thorough comparison of the effect of the hydrogen vs the deuterium in the respective rare earths. The heat capacities and related thermodynamic functions of the intermediate phases, YH, and YD2, were determined by Flotow, Osborne, and Otto,~ and the investigation was again repeated for YH3 and YD3 by Flotow, Osborne, Otto, and Abraham.4 This investigation studied only these specific phases. Jones, Southall, and Goodhead5 surveyed the hydrides and deu-terides of a series of rare earths for thermal stability including erbium. They experimentally determined isotherms of selected hydrides and plateau dissociation pressures for deuterides. These data allowed comparison of the enthalpy and entropies of formation of the dihydrides and dideuterides. To date, no one rare earth has been selected to thoroughly establish the complete pressure-temperature-composition (PTC) relationships of binary solute additions of hydrogen and deuterium, respectively. The objective in this investigation was to provide the first comparison of a complete family of isotherms of a rare earth-deuterium system with those of a rare earth-hydrogen system. This would allow one to determine what differences exist, if any, in the various phase boundaries and the thermodynamic relationships in various regions of the systems. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts&apos; apparatus was employed to conduct the experimental measurements. Briefly, it consisted of a source of pure deuterium, a precision gas-measuring buret, a heated reaction chamber, a mercury manometer, and two McLeod gages (a CVC, GMl00A and a CVC, GM110). Pure deuterium was obtained by passing deuterium through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. A 100-ml precision gas buret graduated to 0.1-ml divisions was used to measure and admit deuterium to the reaction chamber. The reaction unit consisted of a quartz tube surrounded by a nichrome-wound furnace. The furnace temperature was controlled by a recorder-controller to . An independent measurement of the sample temperature in the quartz tube was made by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple situated outside, but adjacent to, the quartz tube near the specimen. Pressure in the manometer range was measured to k0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10~4 to 10 Torr) to *3 pct. The deuterium compositions in erbium were calculated in terms of deuterium-to-erbium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be *0.01 D/Er ratio. The erbium metal was obtained from the Lunex Co. in the form of sponge. The metal was nuclear grade with a purity of 99.9+ pct. The oxygen content was reported to be 340 ppm and the nitrogen not detectable. Metallographically the structure was almost free of second phase (<i vol pct). A quantity of sponge was arc-melted for use as charge material. The solid material was compared with the sponge in the PTC relationships. They were found to be identical. Therefore, sponge material was used henceforth, so that equilibrium could be attained more rapidly. The specimen size was about 0.2 gr for each loading of the reaction chamber. After nine years on a 36 hour schedule and two programs of creeping, the Alcoa Deschambault Potroom of faced the necessity of changing its organization for many reasons: the anodes butts were too small, the anode schedule was unbalanced, the iron content in the metal trends had increased, the metal tapping volume did not convene with crucible capacity and the liquid measurement task was delayed by tapping activities. A kaizen activity inspired the Potroom department to improve the organization. A team of 15 people including the process engineer, the process technician, team supervisors and Potroom operators developed a scenario, which would permit flexibility to creep pots if energy is available and an increase of added value production.This paper will describe the systematic approach, the communication method, the trials, the changes, and our success, along with the problems experienced by the team during the adaptation of Alcoa Deschambault Potroom organization over a 20 month period.
