The Cripple Creek district is in Teller County, Colo., about 18 miles in an air line west of Colorado Springs and at an elevation of 10,000 It. A line drawn through Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak will, if continued, about pass through the district. The character of the country generally is rolling, with few trees and little snow fall. The annual precipitation is about 20 in. All the water used by the mines is supplied by the Altman Water Co., which pumps from the west slope of Pikes Peak. Gold was discovered in 1891, since which time the district has produced $411,000,000. The peak of production was reached in 1900 and amounted to $25,000,000. At present the production amounts to about $400,000 per month. Geology In general, the geology of the district is simple; ash veins and dikes traverse a volcanic plug of breccia. The ore occurs as enriched spots along these dikes and veins. The dikes represent the most recent extrusions and consist of basalt and phonolite. (For a complete geological description reference is made to Professional Paper 54, 1906, of the U. S. Geological Survey.) The ore consists of small parallel seams of high grade. In only a few cases is the gold disseminated through the rock; much of the gold in the broken ore is found in the fines. The wall rock is hard blocky granite or breccia. About 25 per cent. of the rock mined is shipped as ore to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs. The height of an ore deposit is usually several times its length. Few flat oreshoots have been found. The veins are all steep and have a dip of 70 to 80°. Development The claims are all 300 by 1500 ft. and are held by location or patent. All mining is done through shafts, one of which has reached a depth of 2600 ft. The main working shafts are 41/29 by 1335 It. and are made up of three compartments, each 4 by 41/2 ft. in the clear. In the past six years, the Hanna Mining Company has increased its pellet producing capabilities greatly by the construction and expansion of six pelletizing plants in North America. At the present time Hanna managed pelletizers have a nominal capacity of 18 million long tons per year. This capability makes Hanna one of the world's largest pellet producers. To create and maintain such an operation has required the skill and dedication of many people in all aspects of the company's activities, in the various fields of exploration, operations and research. The Research and Development Group consists of the staffs of two laboratories situated on the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota. These laboratories are well equipped to carry out work in the fields of beneficiation and extractive metallurgy especially iron ore treatment. Facilities exist for the batch and semi- continuous investigation of the unit operations common to iron ore beneficiation and pelletizing. The R and D Division is divided into groups according to specialized areas of interest. Presented in this paper today are some aspects of the activities of the Pelletizing Group of the Research & Development Organization.

Slimes, especially clays, are detrimental to several processes in the Mining Industry. The efficiency of classification, clarification, gravity separation, and flotation decreases significantly in the presence of slimes and clays. This problem is particularly critical in the Phosphate and Sulfide Industries. To reduce the effect of slimes in mineral processing, several desliming techniques and chemical additives are used, such as sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, sulfuric acid, tripolyphosphate, hexameta phosphate, etc. Lately, the Mining Chemical industry has shift to more “Specifically Developed” reagents that offer the most efficient and cost effective performance, mainly using organic polymers. For this purpose, the Mining Chemical Industry needs to understand the crystal chemistry of minerals, the chemistry of the aqueous media, the interactions in solids-aqueous-gas interfaces, the rheology of the system, and the plant operation conditions and parameters. This paper describes the use of surface chemistry fundamentals on the design of an organic polymer capable of modifying the rheology of clayish slurries of a phosphate ore. The change in the rheological characteristics of the clayish phosphate slurries allow fine ore particles to settle faster by reducing the slurry viscosity. Thus, abetter separation of the ore from the slimes is possible using gravitational or centrifugal forces. As examples of the application of this reagent, industrial and pilot plant tests on desliming using tanks and hydrocyclones are presented. These tests showed the reduction of 32%-36% in ore losses for different phosphate ores during desliming operations, and the increase of cyclones desliming efficiency to 80%. Tests were also carried out to improve the rejection of unwanted iron bearing slimes in phosphate feed. These tests demonstrated that it is possible to reduce by 0.25%-1.23% Fe2O3content in the flotation feed product. As a result, significant economical benefits are observed with the use of this new technology without any adverse effect on down stream operations, such as clay settling or phosphate flotation.

I SHOULD like to commence by saying how much I appreciate the honor which the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers has done me in inviting me to visit your country, and to deliver this lecture before you. In choosing a subject, and in deciding what to include and what to omit, I have endeavored to discuss as far as possible work carried out recently in Europe with which you may not be unduly familiar. It would be poor return for your hospitality, and a mistaken sort of compliment indeed, if I were to load the lecture with accounts of researches 'carried out in your own country-researches with which you are probably better acquainted than I. Not that I have in any way excluded work done on, this side of the Atlantic from my survey; one would indeed find it difficult to write on this, or on any other branch of science, without mentioning American work. But I have endeavored as far as possible to concentrate on aspects of the case which will, I hope, be comparatively fresh to you, and I feel fairly certain that this will be in accordance with your own wishes. If a strip of iron is heated strongly at one end, the other end remaining cold, there is produced over the heated portion a layer of oxide scale, the thickness of which diminishes steadily with the distance from the hot end. Somewhere in the middle of the strip, the thickness of the oxidized layer will become comparable .to the wave length of light, and over this region the thin films give rise to a series of beautiful interference tints, commonly known as "temper colors." The colors are caused by the fact that two trains of light waves are reflected respectively from the outer and inner surfaces of the oxide film, .and the possibility arises that the "crests" of one series of waves may coincide with the "troughs" of the other, thus diminishing the intensity of the light of some particular wave length. The paper presents the modeling and simulation experience in field of research into the mineral row material separation. Features of the subject domain generate a need of different approaches using for modeling and simulation. The general scheme of separation modeling process and some examples of developed simulators are presented. Due to different features and standards of knowledge, different formal models should be used to describe and analyze separation processes in the frame of general scheme. The main types of simulators are modeling tools based on statistical, analytical or expert (logical) methods. Advantages and disadvantages of each method above are mentioned in the paper. Based on the studies in the field considered, an aggregated mathematical model of a separation process has been generated. The aggregated model is presented by two combined equations. The actual apparatus model is formed by substitution of the particular functional expressions of the forces acting in the apparatus into the aggregated model. The developed simulation tools are based on integration of limited experimental data and on ex-pert knowledge available on separation processes. Simulation does not allow producing an optimal, in terms of mathematics, solution. But it gives an opportunity to produce and compare quite adequate solution variants in real time. The results obtained are the theoretical and methodological base for integrated information technologies to support studies in the field of mineral processing.

"In kraft pulp mills, the spent pulping liquor is concentrated and used as fuel in the recovery boiler. Extensive deposits are formed in the upper section of the boiler due to the very high ash content of the fuel and the volatite nature of the ash. Deposits are composed of Na2S04, Na2C03 NaCI, some potassium salts and reduced sulphur compounds. Chloride and potassium salts are enriched in the deposits compared to the smelt due to their greater volatility.Severe corrosion of the superheater tubes in a recovery boiler has been traced to three factors: a non-uniform temperature profile in the flue gas, relatively high operating steam temperatures and high chIoride and potassium concentrations in the fireside deposits.The role of chIoride and potassium in superheater corrosion has been explained by increased Iiquid phase in deposits. Together with corrosion studies, this information has shown that kraft recovery boiler superheater corrosion due to the chloride and potassium enriched deposits can be avoided by proper boiler operation and by judicious superheater and furnace design.IntroductionThis investigation of recovery boiler superheater corrosion was initiated by the discovery of severe corrosion of the final stage superheater in a Canadian closed cycle kraft pulp mill(1,2). Metal wastage leading to tube failure was believed to be due to three major causes : the relatively high operating steam temperatures, the uneven distribution of flue gas temperature across the boiler which created a "" hot spot"" and the high chloride and potassium concentrations in the superheater fire side deposit. The mill responded to the problem by i) lowering the superheater steam temperature from 475°C to 380°C, ii) minimizing the chloride content in the spent pulping liquor, by controlling the NaCI input with recovered bleach plant effluent, and iii) changing metallurgy of a portion of the bottom section of the final stage superheater platens from ferritic steel T-22 (2.25% Cr, 1% Mo) to austenitic steel Incoloy 800H (21% Cr, 32% Ni, 46% Fe, 1.5% Mn, 1% Si, 0.6% Al) (Fig. 1). In the year 1581, the counselors of King Philip of Spain suggested to that monarch that a canal across the Isthmus of Darien would open the west coast of the South American continent to Spanish miners and explorers, enlarging and expanding the flow of precious metals then just beginning to trickle across the path cut by Spanish Conquistadors, from old Panama to Puerto Bello on the east coast. The King sent out a party of surveyors and explorers under the command of a young engineer, Savadaerro, who returned after two years, reporting upon a location for a canal which was virtually adopted by the French engineers employed by De Lesseps, who in 1877 commenced the work of constructing the Panama Canal-296 years after Sava- daerro's first survey was begun. The suggestion for an Isthmian canal, made to the king at a time when Spain was a proud, virile nation and when that country was contending with England in the fields of discovery and conquest, represents a measure of vision that has never failed to intrigue the imagination. This paper explores the connection between the stresses observed and the failure mechanisms present in the modelled cemented paste backfill. In order to look at this connection, the authors have used a previously developed model to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the model?s strength and permeability input parameters. The results from the sensitivity analysis were then compared to determine what causes modelled stresses and failure mechanisms to vary. Increased insight into the behaviour of the modelled paste will help clarify how paste behaves in the field.

So much has already been wimitten on this vast subject of ground movement and subsidence, and so many data collected and commented upon, that in this paper the author proposes to confine himself to the submission of some plans showing what has actually occurred in the mining of several of the orebodies which have come under his direction during the last 20 years or so at Rio Tinto, Spain. Some notes are added for the purpose of describing the plans. The author does not attempt to give his opinion as to the reasons why the subsidences have occurred in the manner in which they are found, but confines himself to giving as true a picture as possible of the movements that have taken place. Effects of Excavation on Ground Movement Broadly, the effects of excavations on the overhead or adjacent ground can be classified under three headings, as follows: 1. Ground movements due to excavations made from surface only, such as those made in opencasts where no excavations underlie them. The stability and strength of the ground to resist movement must determine the slopes. 2. Ground movements due to underground excavations only; i. e., where the surface is not removed. 3. Ground movements due to a combination of both; i. e., from excavations taking place from the surface for the purpose of stripping an orebody and recovery of the ore to a certain horizon combined with excavations being carried out below, at the same time, for the winning of the ore below the horizon at which mining by stripping or opencasting under the specific conditions is no longer economical. Nos. 1 and 2 represent independent and distinct problems and No. 3 is a combination, which presents results much more difficult of explanation. The accompanying plans and sections give examples of what has occurred under the three conditions. Unfortunately, the class of ground is not exactly the same in them all, but the difference is not greater than is generally encountered over districts of equal area. "This paper covers the planning, development, and mining of an underground pillar complex using a bulk mining method. To achieve the long-term goal of continually improving our operating processes, all cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill workplaces at Thompson Mine have been evaluated for their conversion potential to the bulk method referred to as VerticalBlock Mining (V.B.M.).Since December 1979, conversion has occurred to the extent where 80% of the ore hoisted is mined using Vertical Block Mining (V.B.M.).Productivity and profitability have been substantially improved by converting to this bulk method, especially in pillar areas.IntroductionThompson Mine is a 6000 ton per day underground nickel mine located 3 miles outside the City of Thompson, 400 air miles north of Winnipeg . The mine has two shafts, T-l and T-3 (Fig. 1). The T-l shaft is 4427 feet deep with the deepest mining taking place on 4000 level. The T-3 shaft, which is the area of this presentation, extends to a depth of 2607 ft with the deepest operating level at 2400 ft. The two shafts, some 10 000 ft apart, are connected underground on numerous levels. The ore mined at T-3 is trammed on 2400 level to the T-I main ore pass and hoisted through the T-l shaft. Eight hundred and fifty thousand cubic feet of fresh air per minute ventilates the mine.The 1400 level 310 pillar complex is located in the T-3 mine area. There are six rib pillars, two crown pillars and one main pillar (boundary pillar between cut-and-fill stopes) within the complex (Fig. 2). The majority of the ore in this area has been mined using mechanized cut-and-fill techniques .Undercut-and-fill mining was the method originally planned to recover these pillars. It is slow, labour-intensive, and requires extensive use of timber during the mining cycle. The extraction drifts in the area are heavily timbered due to their proximity to the ore and the age of the facilities. Increasing drift maintenance costs and the successful mining of two main pillars with V.8.M. techniques provided the stimulus to review the mining plans for this area."

IN reheating quenched steel to remove part of the hardness, the softening effect has generally been considered to be a function of temperature and time. The temperature effect is well known, and long before pyrometers were heard of the blacksmith was able to do a good job of tempering, by rule-of-thumb methods and experience in judging temperatures. Modern conditions, which demand steel that will withstand the severest tests, require that the heat treatment he carried out with every possible precaution to secure the best results obtainable. Pyrometers and heat-treatment furnaces of many types are on the market and improvements are continually being made so that it is now possible to regulate the temperature in heat treatment very accurately. There is -still a question regarding the time that the steel should be subjected to treatment. It is customary with all operators to insure the desired tem-pressure throughout the specimen and it is generally supposed that a longer treatment of a hardened steel produces a further softening but there are few published figures showing the exact effect of time of treat-ment at constant temperature. A search of the literature disclosed several brief statements that the tempering effect was a function of both time and temperature, but in no case were any figures given. The opinion is very generally held that the well-known tempering colors are accurate indicators of the degree of tempering. This is disputed by Brearley (The Heat Treatment of Tool Steel, page 102) who states: It has been said that the result would be the same in respect to both hardness and other properties whether the colors were obtained by a shorter heating at a higher temperature or a longer heating at a lower one. This, to say the least, is a very doubtful conclusion, and is certainly not borne out by mechanical tests on oil-hardened and tempered motor car steels, which, after tempering for periods varying from 15 min to 2 hr., show no very great differences. The present investigation had for its object the obtaining of some definite data regarding the effect of time, which might serve as a guide to those engaged in the heat treatment of steel. THE founding of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1871 came at an unusually significant moment in the life of our country. The industrial revolution, in which mineral production played a major role, was just getting underway. The iron industry, established several decades earlier, was reaching sizable proportions. In 1871 pig-iron production was approaching 2 million tons, and the industry had spread as far west as Missouri and Wisconsin. The chief sources of iron ore were Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Michigan. The age of steel was in its infancy; production had not yet reached 100,000 tons per annum. The gold rush to California two decades earlier and the discovery of other gold and silver bonanzas in the West paved the way for the transcontinental railways, which were then being built and which contributed much to the subsequent development of the great copper, lead, and zinc districts of the Rocky Mountain area. Regular production of copper in the Michigan peninsula and of lead in Missouri and the upper Mississippi region had been established for many years but on a scale dwarfed by the quantities later required as technical progress, invention and enterprise made possible the rapid expansion of industry. THE first specimens of this material which came under my notice, as found in the State of Texas, were sent to me by Mr. J. C. Melcher, of Fayette county, soon after the organization of the State Geological Survey. I wrote him concerning it, and had the locality and manner of occurrence described, but 1 had no opportunity to visit and examine the deposit until the present field-season. Later, specimens were collected by Dr. Penrose and myself on a trip made by boat down the Rio Grande, from Eagle Pass to Hidalgo, in June, 1889. At the time of collection I marked the substance "Albertite," doubtfully, but, on examination, it proved to be nearer Grahamite. The geological horizon of the two occurrences is Tertiary. The first locality mentioned is in the upper part of the beds called by us Fayette beds, and provisionally correlated with the Miocene, or Grand Gulf of Hilgard's Mississippi section, while the latter is in the lowest strata of the Eocene which are exposed on the Rio

The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. An important feature of the sinter structure was the formation of a perovskite phase (CaTiO3 ) and an increase in the proportion of this phase in the structure as TiO2 levels increase.CITATION:Dehghan-Manshadi, A, Manuel, J, Hapugoda, S, Ware, N and Donskoi, E, 2015. Bubble collisions with ore grains and a selective formation of the bubble-grain aggregates are necessary steps for flotation separation of useful and gangue components of an ore. For the attachment of valuable mineral grain to the colliding bubble a liquid film, separating the bubble and the grain needs to rupture during short time of their collision. High hydrophobicity of the grain surface is favorable because stability of the separating (wetting) film is much lower at such surfaces, that is, the film ruptures faster and at greater thickness. Simultaneously, it needs to be kept in mind and taken into consideration that high affinity to air is a typical feature of hydrophobic surfaces. Thus, when the hydrophobic surface is immersed into aqueous phase the air can stay attached to such surfaces and affect kinetics of the bubble attachment. The paper presents results and analysis of dynamic phenomena occurring upon the collision of the rising bubble followed by its attachment to hydrophobic (Teflon) plates of different roughness. The influence of the Teflon surface roughness, solution concentration, bubble size and impact velocity on bouncing of the colliding bubble, time of the three phase contact (TPC) formation and drainage time of the liquid film, formed between the solid and bubble surfaces, is described. High hydrophobicity, as showed earlier (Malysa et al, 2005), does not assure that each collision leads to the TPC formation and attachment of the colliding bubble. Roughness is the parameter of crucial importance for kinetics of the bubble attachment to hydrophobic surfaces (Krasowska and Malysa, 2007; Krasowska et al, 2009; Kosior et al, 2011). Enlarged roughness of the Teflon plate, from ca. 1 to 80µm, results in shortening the time of the TPC formation (bubble attachment) by over an order of magnitude - from 105 to a few milliseconds only. Higher surface roughness means that larger amount of air can be entrapped in bigger scratches and cavities of the Teflon plate during its immersion into aqueous phase. Results documenting importance of the air presence are showed and mechanism of the air facilitated TPC formation and bubble attachment to hydrophobic surfaces is described. "A complete laboratory process for the treatment of lateritic ores containing a high proportion of iron, as well as chrome and alumina, has been established. The ores treated originate from the tropical zones and result from superficial climatic alteration. According to recent estimates, the known reserves of such ores reach many billions of tons, thus representing huge potential reserves for the elements they contain.The process used is based on the alkaline roasting of pelletized ore in the presence of sodium carbonate. This treatment results in the separate recovery of pellets of upgraded iron ore, pure chrome oxide and hydrated alumina. The research described in the paper aims at determining the best experimental conditions for obtaining the highest extraction of the required oxide from this type of ore."

IN the course of an investigation on chromium containing minor amounts of alloying elements, the information herein has been obtained on the crys-tallographic orientations resulting from arc melting, rolling, and annealing. The chromium used in this investigation was electrolytic flake obtained from the Electro Metallurgical Co. This material was heated for 20 hr at 1600°C in hydrogen with a dew point of about — 100°C. The oxygen and nitrogen content of the chromium after this treatment was 0.0003 pct 0 and 0.005 pct N. Five pounds of this chromium were arc melted in a water-cooled copper crucible. After arc melting, the oxygen and nitrogen contents were 0.002 and 0.025 pet, respectively. A section of this ingot is shown in Fig. 1. By means of a back-reflection Laue technique, the crystal habit of the cast ingot was determined. As expected, it was found that the [loo] was approximately the axis of the columnar grains. In this respect, chromium behaves like other body-centered-cubic metals in that a cubic axis is normal to the cold surface of the mold. A slab cut from this ingot was rolled at 600°C as follows: four 30 pct reductions were made with intermediate anneals at 1200°C for 15 min. Rolling was done with the [loo] of the columnar grains in the rolling direction. Following the final anneal, an 80 pct reduction was taken at 600 °C. The final sheet thickness was ten mils. By polishing and etching, the thickness was reduced to four mils and the grain orientation determined by the transmission Laue method using molybdenum radiation with a zirconium filter. Fig. 2 is the (110) pole figure for this material with the ideal (100) [011] and (111) [112] orientations indicated. The orientation is typical of most cold rolled body-centered-cubic metals having the [llO] of the grains approximately in the rolling direction and the (100) planes approximately in the plane of the rolled sheet. There is also evidence of some 10) [1 orientation. The grain orientation of sheet rolled 40 and 80 pct in the same direction as before at 600°C followed by recrystallization at 12000 C for 15 min was determined by a back-reflection Laue technique. A random texture was found in both cases. This 1200°C 15 min anneal was found to give complete recrystallization and some grain growth.

The effect of impurities; iron and selenium, on current efficiency and deposit quality in copper electrowinning was investigated using an at-line cell at the Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners’ Copper Tankhouse. The tankhouse is a direct leach, starter sheet electrowinning operation with a unique electrolyte composition. The effect of iron on the current efficiency in the at-line cell was found to be less severe than reported in literature. However, the distinction between the chemical impact of iron on current efficiency and the physical impact of iron on a starter sheet operation needs to be realised. The effect of selenium on current efficiency and deposit quality is also reported. INTRODUCTION Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners’ (RBMR) Copper Tankhouse serves a unique function in the refinery flowsheet in that its primary functions are the removal of copper and production of acid for the leach circuit. This function needs to be performed to specification in order to keep the leach circuit operating optimally. Current efficiency is seen as an indicator of tankhouse performance and efficient energy use. The tankhouse plates starter sheets onto titanium blanks which, after stripping and preparation, return into the production cells for further plating. Approximately 78% of tankhouses surveyed (Robinson et al., 2013) use permanent cathode technology whereas older, smaller operations still use starter sheet technology. Drawbacks of the starter sheet technology are that the starters are thin and bend easily leading to increased shorts, they need to be removed after two days of plating to be manually straightened and are then returned to the cells. In addition, the electrolyte levels in the cells need to be adjusted during the plating cycle to improve loop adhesion to the cathode and reduce loop corrosion. The starter sheet technology is therefore very labour intensive and the final quality of the product is dependent on the quality of the starter sheets produced. In comparison, permanent cathode or direct plating technology lends itself to automation, allows for higher current densities and better cathode quality due to more robust geometric stability in the cell. The present barrier to implementation of permanent cathode plating at the RBMR Copper Tankhouse is the capital cost required to convert the tankhouse, i.e. blanks and stripping machine. At present, alternatives to titanium blanks, such as LDX 2101, are being investigated for the unique electrolyte composition of this tankhouse.

Over the last 40 years, numerous investigations have focussed on the preg-robbing capacity of carbonaceous material during gold ore processing. Various techniques have been applied to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the carbonaceous material in efforts to predict its preg-robbing capacity. The present study, which forms part of an ongoing investigation, is specifically designed to increase the understanding of preg-robbing in ores containing carbonaceous material. In excess of 100 samples from 13 gold mines located in major gold provinces of the world have been incorporated into the present study. These samples were characterized using industry standard metallurgical techniques and were shown to have gold adsorption capacities ranging from a few grams to many hundreds of grams of gold per ton of ore. Further analysis showed that the crystalline nature of the carbonaceous material, which is related to its geological history, is important in determining the preg-robbing capacity of an ore. This finding builds on the common understanding that the preg-robbing behaviour of an ore is related to the amount (or abundance) of carbonaceous material present in that ore. In this study, Raman spectroscopy was used to evaluate the physical nature of carbonaceous material. This is a tool which has been successfully applied by researchers for the characterisation of carbon materials, with respect to crystallite size and lattice defects. Raman analysis of the samples included in this study showed varying degrees of disorder in the carbonaceous materials from the different deposits. Comparison of the Raman spectra with the gold loading capacities of the samples indicated a direct relationship between the structure of the carbonaceous material and its capacity to preg-rob gold. From this, a simple and robust method has been developed based on the Raman spectra of the sample and carbonaceous material content to predict the preg-robbing capacity of an ore. The potential exists to develop a predictive tool using Raman spectroscopy for characterising the preg-robbing capacity of an ore. Such a tool would have potential application in projects ranging from the early stage of exploration through to more detailed feasibility studies and mining operations. The result of applying the predictive method outlined in this paper would be the effective and proactive management of the deleterious influence of carbonaceous material on gold recovery in mining operations.

The effects of underground longwall coal mining on flow in perennial streams within the Pittsburgh seam basin were evaluated. Four streams above four different longwall mines were studied. Overburden depths at the study sites ranged from 500 to 600 feet. At all four locations, premining streamfow measurements were made to establish baseline flow conditions. Measurements were then repeated at each location after the longwall face passed beneath the stream. At one location, in which the longwall panel axis was roughly parallel to the stream, the streamflow was monitored as the longwall face advanced. Measurements at this location showed that temporary flow reduction occurred as the face advanced underneath; however, after the tensile portion of the traveling subsidence profile passed, this effect was lessened. At two of the sites in which the stream was roughly perpendicular to the panel axis, postmining streamfow increased across the panel and decreased over the development headings, such that the net lateral change in streamflow across the fully subsided panel and associated development headings was small compared to the measured flow.
