IN the southern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, many of the coal seams dip at angles of 40° to 50° from the horizontal. For transportation purposes, "tunnels" are driven across the coal measures and, occasionally, "rock gangways," beside the seams and parallel with them. The use of gangways driven in country rock appears to be increas-ing, as they avoid the maintenance' of long gangways in coal, which eventually are driven to the colliery boundaries, and permit mining from a number of intermediate blocks without interference. The rock consists of slates or sandstones of moderate hardness, which may range into very hard, highly siliceous, fine-grained conglomerates. In this distinctly bedded formation,' the direction of the heading, whether parallel with or across the structure, makes it necessary to distribute the drill holes in a different pattern to break the ground, but does not change loading conditions. In 1932, practically all the mucking was done by hand, and it was the established custom to use four men on two drills for drilling and breaking the ground, and five for loading it, out. A driver and mule was needed in addition, to assemble the rock cars at a siding or branching track in the rear, pending their final disposal. This might occupy the driver's whole time, or if the length of haul were short, he might be able to do other useful work. It was thought possible in 1932 to reduce the cost of driving such headings in rock by mechanical loading, and to investigate this subject a scraper loader was used in a section of tunnel then being driven. Opera-tions while driving 195 ft. of this tunnel using a scraper loader were care-fully observed. Time studies were made of the loading, and records made of the routine of breaking ground, but not in such detail. Tunnels or gangways in the colliery are 7 ft. high above the rails, by 10 ft. wide, which requires a minimum of 8 ft. in height, broken to allow for rails and ties. This cross section is of sufficient size to permit the use of any one of several types of power loaders, but for this demonstration if was found most convenient to use a scraper loader.

Central Texas added 76 producing oil and gas wells during the year, abandoned 378 wells in the same period, and produced 10,359,905 bbl. of oil in the 12 months under consideration. The oil production represents a decline of only 3 per cent as compared to 1934, but it must be remembered that much new production was added during the year. The activity in new work centered in Frio, Bexar, Williamson and Cald-well counties, with development in the Pearsall, Von Ormy and Byersville fields taking first importance. New discoveries in 1935 were confined to Pearsall area of Frio County and an extension to the Darst Creek field in Guadalupe County. The Red Lake field, in eastern Freestone County, proved itself of importance from the standpoint of a gas reserve but no oil production has yet been obtained. In Bexar County, the Von Ormy field, in which the discovery well was drilled early in 1934, completed 22 oil producers during the year. New Fields Pearsal1.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation, in developing its 60,000-acre block in Frio County, has definitely proved the existence of commercial oil production in four separate horizons; namely, the Navarro, the Austin Chalk, the Buda and the Georgetown. The discovery well, a two million cubic foot gas well, was tompleted in 1934. A test of the Trinity sand at 10,050 ft. found salt water but later was plugged back and finished as an oil well in the Navarro sand. Most recent of their discoveries has been in the Austin Chalk at a depth of 5666 ft., where a 24-hr. gage through 1-in. choke showed 2640 bbl. of pipe line oil. The oil has a gravity of 28.0" A.P.I. and is brownish in color. Because of lack of pipe lines in the area, the wells are produced only for short periods of time, and it is predicted that development will be slow until the district is entered by pipe line purchasing companies. The Youga gold mine in Burkina Faso, West Africa, is scheduled to produce first gold in the third quarter of calendar 2007. The project is expected to produce 540 000 oz of gold over 6.5 years, from a conventional open pit carbon in leach mine. The direct capital cost of the project is US$47 M. Etruscan Resources Inc, a Canadian based gold exploration and development company, holds 90 per cent of the project company Burkina Mining Company SA (BMC). The state of Burkina Faso is free-carried for the remaining ten per cent of BMC. RMB Resources Limited, of Melbourne Australia, has arranged a US$35 M project finance facility for BMC (the Borrower) as the majority of funding for the Youga project development. The loan facility was provided by RMB Australia Holdings and Macquarie Bank Ltd (the Lenders) each as to 50 per cent in the lending syndicate. The Lenders also provided a gold hedging facility to guarantee a minimum price for the projectÆs gold production. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, part of the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA). The project financing is the first such facility to be arranged for a mining project in Burkina Faso, with little or no precedent available in other UEMOA countries. Therefore, while the Youga gold project is forecast to be a robust project applying conventional mining and processing methods, a number of legal, technical, commercial and social issues required identification, evaluation and resolution before the loan could be established. This paper describes that evaluation process and the resolution of these issues. In-house experience and expertise in both the LendersÆ and BorrowerÆs teams has facilitated a greater understanding and æownershipÆ of the issues and hence provided comfort with risks which might not normally be taken in conventional project developments and project financings. As a result, blanket external reviews were not required by the Lenders. A long-standing relationship between Etruscan and RMB Resources also facilitated solutions to a number of issues. Nevertheless, a degree of flexibility by the Lenders, the Borrower and Etruscan was required to successfully close the financing.

Under the traditional environmental paradigm, industry, stakeholders, and government impact the environment through production, consumption, and regulation. For more than twenty years, this paradigm has survived more or less unchallenged. Environmental action has followed a typical pattern: industry pollutes, the public clamors, government enacts legislation, and industry expenditures for pollution-control equipment soar. In the 1990's, many groups realize that command-and-control techniques may not be the most effective method of dealing with environmental issues in the new millennium. The need for regulatory reform became apparent in the 1980's after an accident at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India. In addition, the prospects of an integrated European market and increased global trade sparked a need for common standards regarding the production of goods and services, which led to the adoption of the International Standards Organization (ISO) 9000 Quality Standards. These factors, and others, triggered the development of the Environmental Management System (EMS). Over the past decade, country-and industry- specific EMSs were developed. However, the IS0 realized the need for a single, internationally recognized standard that would be workable for any type organization. The goal of this standard is to promote economic competitiveness, remove trade barriers, and promote environmental protection. To this end, the IS0 14000 Standards were developed to provide business with a structure for managing environmental impacts. This article argues that a new paradigm has begun to transcend the old. Protection of the environment if shifting from "government drivers" to "market drivers". This shift means that industry and stakeholders, instead of government, are taking the lead to develop ways to protect the environment. This article also argues that government can use this new paradigm, in a time of declining budgets and regulatory reform, to continue to protect the environment through increased compliance monitoring and rigorous enforcement. Specifically, the IS0 14000 Standards can allow the government to reduce compliance costs, streamline permit and reporting requirements, and provide business with regulatory flexibility. Finally, this article argues that IS0 14000 will be central to the regulatory reform effort, because it can be internally implemented with little need for legislative intervention.

DuRing the year of 1937, the East Texas district produced 211,194,467 hbl. of oil and marketed more than 22,329 million cu. ft. of gas; 3377 oil and gas wells were completed. During this same period 106 exploratory wells were drilled, discovering three new oil fields and one gas-distillate field. Fields East Texas Field.—The East Texas field again led the district as to production and number of wells completed. During the year, 2420 oil wells were completed, making a total of 24,382 producing wells, which produced 171,336,854 bbl. of oil, for a total of 1,156,352,834 bbl. since the beginning. During the year the average bottom-hole pressure dropped 49 lb., making the average bottom-hole pressure 1119 lb. Approximately 3500 wells are making salt water, 20 per cent of them making over 80 per cent of the water. During the month of December, the daily average production of salt water was 119,000 barrels. Talco Field, Titus and Franklin Counties.—The Talco field produced 9,780,948 bbl. of oil during the year, from 637 wells. During the year 472 wells were completed. All of the wells are pumping and 241 are making salt water. This field has followed a normal development and did not exceed the estimated number of acres reported last year. Rodessa Field, Cuss and Marion Counties.—The Rodessa field was extended about 13 miles southwest into Marion County, which added approximately 4000 acres to the field. During the year 260 wells were completed, making a total of 416 producing wells, which produced 12,646,-970 bbl. of oil. The author was unable to obtain figures for the amount of gas produced. The field has two gasoline plants, which had a daily average of 16,558,000 cu. ft. of gas during December, averaging 0.83 gal. per M cu. ft. As of Jan. 1, 31 wells were making salt water. DURING a literature survey of the indium-zinc phase diagram, controversial reports on the composition of the eutectic point were encountered. The value reported in the investigation of Wilson and Perettil and in a later investigation by Valen-tiner' was 4.0 wt pct zinc. The most recent work recorded on this system consisted of an exhaustive survey of alloys by Rhines and Grobe8 in which they indicate a value of 2.8 wt pct zinc for the eutectic composition. To clarify this aspect of the diagram, a series of alloys were prepared by melting the respective constituents in a glass test tube under a covering of mineral oil and slowly cooling the melt in a furnace. The zinc used was Baker's C.P. and had the following analysis: insoluble in H2SO4—0.0l pct; pb—0.001 pct; Fe-—0.001 pct. The indium, which was supplied by the Indium Corporation of America, had a purity of 99.9'7 pet with the following impurities: Cu—0.002 pct; Pb—0.006 pct; Sn—0.01 pct; Zn—0.01 pct. The alloys were prepared for metal-lographic examination using a technique already reported' and a new value of 2.0 ± 0.1 wt pct zinc was observed. An alloy containing 2.00 wt pct zinc was also made by melting the constituents under a vacuum. In both of these methods of alloy preparation the losses can be kept extremely small. Again, the characteristic eutectic structure was obtained, assuring confidence in this value. The accompanying micrographs are presented in support of this point. Fig. la represents an alloy containing 4.00 wt pet zinc, and reveals excess zinc particles, which precludes the value of both Wilson and Peretti, and Valentiner. CHANGING trends in concentration, involving regrinding with the subsequent production of a finely divided, high-grade flotation product, presents a real problem to the modern copper smelter. In the treatment of such a material, handling difficulties are numerous and potential possible losses may be very great. In many plants, of course, preliminary roasting of the furnace charge remains an economical necessity. Under such circumstances, the operator has no alternative except to follow orthodox roaster reverberatory practice, though taking all possible precautions to avoid excessive dust losses and bad working conditions. In other plants, roasting is not only unnecessary but would be highly undesirable, and at best the charge would be merely dried before entering the reverberatory furnace. In the latter case the possibilities of raw charging loom large. The Miami plant of the International Smelting Co. handles the entire output of concentrates of the several mining companies operating in the Globe-Miami district. All of these companies produce a flotation concentrate which, at the Miami Copper Co. particularly, is all reground and is high in grade. In addition, the Inspiration Copper Co. ships a substantial tonnage of high-grade cement copper to the smelter from its leaching plant. Following the flow sheet of the original plant, all such material received was bedded, dried in Wedge furnaces and smelted in reverberatory furnaces. At times during the history of the plant it has been necessary to carry the drying operation further, to a partial roast, before reverberatory smelting. Since the charge contained over 80 per cent flotation concentrates, the handling of which in a dried condition was at best a dusty job, unusual precautions were taken to cut down dust losses. The Wedge furnace plant was equipped with a Cottrell treater and all hoppers and calcine cars were carefully designed to cut down dust loss in transferring the so-called calcine from hoppers to car and from car to furnace. In the furnace itself the dusting problem was a severe one. Arch erosion was very rapid and flues and waste-heat boilers rapidly filled up with a partly smelted flue dust.

"The Chelopech epithermal arsenic bearing high-sulphidation, copper-gold deposit located in Bulgaria is often referred as the richest European gold deposit currently under exploitation. Key points from the flotation circuit of the processing plant have been sampled and selected physicochemical parameters measured. Plant survey has followed with selected samples being submitted to chemical and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). Quantitative analysis has enabled to link the flotation response of the main copper bearing minerals with the physiochemical parameters (Eh, DO, EDTA extractable Cu and Fe) being measured. Data from mineral liberation analysis have highlighted an important process-relevant information explaining the variable floatability in the various granulometric classes.The low chalcopyrite recovery could be linked to the non-sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen measured in the copper selective flotation circuit. Given the finely-disseminated copper bearing minerals, the observed copper losses inside the flotation could be also explained by the insufficient degree of liberation of the mineral grains. Suggestions for improvement in metallurgical recovery are therefore proposed.INTRODUCTIONThe Chelopech deposit is a high sulphidation (HS) volcanic-hosted epithermal gold-copper one (Bonev et al., 2002; Kouzmanov et al, 2009; Strashimirov, et al. 2002). It is considered as one of the largest and economically most important ore deposits in Bulgaria, and often is referred to Europe’s largest currently mined gold resource. It is located in the Srednogorie zone which falls within the central sector of the extensive Tethyan–Eurasian copper belt formed during Mesozoic–Cenozoic time along the southern margin of Eurasia. The Srednogorie zone has the features of a subduction-related, Late Cretaceous island arc, with development of a calk-alkaline to sub-alkaline volcano-plutonic magmatism and associated hydrothermal ore deposits (Bonev et al., 2002).Ore mineralisation occurs as veins, mineralised breccia, and massive sulphide replacements and disseminations. Three mineralisation stages have been identified at Chelopech deposit. An early pyrite–marcasite mineralisation (stage I), characterised by disseminated to massive pyrite followed and partly brecciated by enargite– luzonite and tennantite–chalcopyrite–bornite (stage II) mineralisation. The gold is met in ores belonging to the stage II. Sphalerite and galena veins characterise stage III, best developed below and adjacent to the pyrite–enargite– chalcopyrite ore bodies. Advanced argillic altered volcanoclastic rocks commonly host this mineralisation (Chambefort and R. Moritz, 2014)."

There are four main types of base metal and gold mineralisation recognised in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. These are stratiform, polymetallic veins, stockwork/concordant gold-quartz veins and unconformity related uranium-gold-platinoid mineralisation. The stratigraphy of the central Palaeoproterozoic Pine Creek Geosyncline has been simplified into three groups comprising the Batchelor, Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups in ascending order. Stratiform mineralisation occurs within the Frances Creek Group. The earliest mineralisation is found adjacent to circular faults ringing basement highs. Higher in the stratigraphy, stratiform mineralisation is often associated with zones of high compression in the vicinity of basement highs. A synsedimentary-diagenetic origin for stratiform mineralisation is proposed. Polymetallic vein mineralisation occurs within the Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. Its composition changes systematically through the stratigraphy similar to the stratiform mineralisation. The mineralisation is structurally controlled and usually occurs in the vicinity of basement highs. Stockwork-concordant gold-quartz vein mineralisation is hosted by the upper Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. It occurs within compressional zones and along the Pine Creek Structure corridor around, above and particularly between basement highs. Mineable reserves occur in thick continuous semi concordant quartz-sulphide veins and/or stockworks. Unconformity related uranium-gold-platinoid mineralisation shows a close spatial relationship with the Palaeoproterozoic/Mesoproterozoic unconformity. The mineralisation is localised by structures formed during Mesoproterozoic deposition and is commonly adjacent to Archaean basement or its remobilised equivalents. The type of mineralisation (stratifom/polymetallic vein) is a reflection of local stress regimes, structure and physio-chemical conditions. An initial phase of stratiform mineralisation is postulated to have occurred with the first significant marine transgression in a tensional regime. A second phase occurred later during a compressive regime. "Ihermochemical sulphate reduction of mineralising fluids by hydrocarbons is invoked as the precipitation mechanism for the polymetallic vein type of mineralisation. Hydrocarbon generation is postulated to have occurred within the Frances Creek Group, in many places contemporaneously with the movement of mineralising fluids and basin compression. Polymetallic veins formed from the interaction of mineralising fluids and hydrocarbons which were trapped in suitable structures. An abundant, continuing supply of hydrocarbons was necessary to form significant deposits. Where these conditions were not net, the mineralising fluids largely continued their ascent to the near surface environment to form stratiform deposits. The stockwork/concordant gold-quartz vein mineralisation is a later event and occurred during the relaxation of compressional defonnation after deposition of the 1-inniss River Group.

"Helium has great value to the oil and as industry as a tracer gas, according to tests just completed in the Elk Hills Field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Kearn County, California. When used as .a tracer gas, small percentages of helium are mixed with natural gas pumped into a reservoir for conservation, repressuring, or cycling purposes. Because minute quantities of helium added to natural gases can be detected by analytical methods and accurately determined, the variations of the helium content of gas withdrawn from various parts of a field when helium has been added to the injected gas give interesting and long-sought data on the movement of injected gas through reservoirs.The Bureau of Mines engineers began their studies of the use of helium as a tracer material in gas-injection operations in the Elk Hills, California, oil field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, in response to a request by the Navy Department for assistance in connection with an expanded oil-production program instituted in that field. This report discusses the Bureau's work on the problem of determining the direction and extent of migration of injected gas in the Elk Hills reservoir by the use of helium as a tracer gas,The Bureau appreciates the cooperation and assistance of Commodore W. G. Greenman, U.S.N., director, and Commander R. Walling, U.S.N.R., Assistant director, Naval Petroleum .and Oil Shale Reserves, Washington, D. C., Captain H. P. J. van Rensburg. Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of eighteen. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124, compared with an excess of income over expenditure of R4,218 last year. There are a number of reasons for this substantial change. There was a loss on realization of investments compared with a substantial surplus in recent years. The publication of the Journal once again resulted in a large loss in spite of a generous subvention of R2,000 from the Department of Cultural Affairs and other assistance amounting to R750. The revenue from sales of publications was down considerably. This is a figure which fluctuates considerably from year to year. The secretarial fee was considerably higher than previously. Due to pressure of work it was necessary for the Secretary to relinquish his duties with the Institute of Land Surveyors and, therefore, for this Institute to assume the additional staff costs involved. Finally there was unusual expenditure on the 75th Anniversary celebrations. There was a pleasing increase in revenue from subscriptions, due to the steadily increasing membership, but this was quite inadequate to cover the substantial increases in expenditure and losses in revenue mentioned above. The changes that have been effected in the arrangements for the publication of the Journal have been mentioned elsewhere in this report. It is expected that these will bring about substantial financial benefits in the long term. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of Rl00 and the total fund was therefore increased by this amount to R4,206. The balance sheet indicates that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R8,755 to R13,059, while the Accumulated Funds now amount to R22,567 as against R24,691 last year. MEMBERSHIP Fifty-six Members, fifty-five Associate Members, thirteen Graduates, twenty-two Affiliates and twenty- nine Students were elected during the year. Twelve Members were admitted to Life Membership; seven Associate Members were transferred to the grade of Member; four Graduates and two Students were transferred to the grade of Associate Member; five Students were transferred to the grade of Graduate; three Affiliates were transferred to the grade of Member; five Affiliates were transferred to the grade of Associate Member. It has been arranged that in future the publication of the Journal, including advertisement sales, will be handled by Kelvin Publications (Pty.) Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institutes. In 1967 Southern. Peru Copper Corp. was faced with the problem of developing a water supply for their new Cuajone open-pit copper mining and milling operation, at a time when the existing water system was inadequate for a proposed expansion of the producing Toquepala mine. The most probable source for additional water was considered to be the Pasto Grande basin lying 30 km north of the terminus of the pipeline. This source of supply could be developed only at substantial cost, after construction of a dam, tunnels, pumping plants, and several miles of canals. Investigation of other possible sources was undertaken, and one of these was the Huaitire alluvial fan which had been recognized on aerial photographs in 1961. Resistivity soundings on the fan provided isopach information for estimating the volume of fan sediments. In the course of carrying out these soundings, a high-resistivity layer at depth was indicated. The favored geological interpretation of this layer at the time was a tight impermeable volcanic formation, but an alternative explanation was a ground-water aquifer of high transmissibility. Geological studies just released by the Peruvian Geological Map Commission supported the latter interpretation. A diamond drill hole sunk to a depth of 725 ft on the Huaitire Pampa in June 1967 proved the absence of the expected volcanics, the presence of the sediments, and indicated that some sedimentary horizons carried artesian water. Subsequent well drilling and hydrological and geological studies show that the aquifer occurs principally in the Upper Tertiary Capillune formation, covers an extensive area on the Peruvian altiplano, discharges enormous quantities of water to a large number of canyons dissecting it, and will adequately supply most, if not all, water needs of the Cuajone operations.

The practical execution of the design for rolling-mills presented by the writer at the Paris meeting* of thc Iron and Steel Institute in 1900 involves the determination of some questions not yet discussed, among which is the determinatioir of the amount of power required to perform the rolling of pieces of iron and steel of given dimensions. It is necessary to know this factor if we would put motors of proper capacity to the respective pairs of rolls, or, rcciprocally, if, having standard motors at our disposal, we would design grooves to suit them. Moreover, this factor is involved in giving right dimensions to every part of the rolls and housings. Expert designers of engines for driving rolling-mills of the present type receive very indefinite directions, such as: that the motor is to drive a light, medium or heavy train; that it must work with fly-wheel or reversing gear; that the number of revolutions per minute should not exceed 40 or 60, and that at a given speed the power developed should be from 100 to 200 H. P., or from 1,000 to 2,500 13. P. It frequently happens, however, that an cngine of 200 H. P. is forced under the circumstances to press or develop as much as 300 H. P., while, on the other hand, the ,1,500-11. P. engine may be rolling-stock which could be worked with a maximum expenditure of 60 to 80 H. P. Of course such variatior~s as these do not permit the best adjustment of parts or the best economy of power and fuel. The design of roll-trains is even more vaguely limited. During September 2000, Nabalco management identified the need for a corporate system to deliver its key performance indicators (KPIs). In June 2001, a need was also identified to replace the existing metallurgical accounting system. After a review of the technologies available, the decision was made to develop the systems in-house, in preference to purchasing commercial software packages. This would allow much greater control over the structure, and provide for an iterative, concurrent development process between software and key business developers. This has proven invaluable in the development process. The purpose of the KPI system is to provide a unified reporting tool for all performance indicators. These indicators include production, safety, health and environment, personnel, costs, continuous improvement initiatives and opportunity losses. All of these disparate measurements are brought together into the KPI system and used to determine the performance for each department or area. The general principles of the balanced scorecard business approach (Kaplan and Norton, 1996) are applied to achieve a performance measurement for each area within Nabalco. The new metallurgical accounting system (MA) is a SQLServer database with web page and Excel interfaces. The database is structured around daily inputs of all measurements and calculations. The data is stored and adjustments and reconciliations can be made to this data as required. The focus is on accounting rigour, with all adjustments recorded in the database to allow for full auditing. The structure of the data focuses on the five input/output streams (bauxite in, caustic soda in, fuel oil in, residue out, and alumina out). In-circuit inventory provides a secondary measurement on which to check and calibrate the MA system. The KPI and MA systems were developed using Web technologies and are available to any internet-enabled device with Internet Explorer installed. This removes the need for software rollouts and user training. This will promote the wide use of the systems throughout Nabalco and Alcan.

THE large difference in the X-ray scattering factors for molybdenum and manganese makes the o- phase in the Mn-Mo system an interesting one to study with respect to ordering of the atoms. Such a study has been carried out using data obtained from a powder sample, and the resulting evidence for ordering in this compound is presented here. It is not possible, of course, to obtain all the details of structure for a u phase from powder data only. Most difficult of all would be the determination of precise atomic parameters. There is reason to believe, however, that the atomic parameters do not vary greatly in the different s'S and that the precise values obtained from one s structure would then allow decisions as to the ordering of atoms to be made when there is a large difference in scattering factors. In particular, the powder intensities for Mn-Mo s are for the most part in good agreement with those observed for Co-Cr, for which single crystal studies have been made by the authors.' There are a few marked discrepancies in the intensity comparison of the two s's, and these cannot be removed by adjustment of the parameters. They are interpreted as resulting from a more pronounced effect of ordering of the atoms. Accordingly, the parameters of Co-Cr s' have been used for the calculations of the Mn-Mo intensities. For Co-Cr, the space group is D4h14-P4/mnm with atoms in the following positions: 1—2 in (b); 11—4 in (f), with x=0.1031; 111—8 in (i), with x= 0.3713 and y=0.0370; IV—8 in (i), with x=0.5662 and y=0.2396; and V—8 in (j), with x=0.3160Y and y — -0.250. The unit cell is tetragonal, with an==9.10A and cn=4.74A for the Mn-Mo u phase studied here.

This paper reviews some of the factors thought to control the formation of supergene gold in the Pacific and its Rim. Discussion of these should lead to reassessment of the economic potential of many areas. In several parts of the world many gold-bearing veins display rich gold values only in the oxidized zone, whereas beneath the present (or ancient) watertable the unaltered vein commonly holds only sub-economic refractory low grade sulphides or arsenides. In the Eastern Highlands of Australia some of the most spectacular concentrations of - gold have been found at shallow depths. For example, Harper (1918) describes the Canton mine in New South Wales which was stoped over a length of 180 metres from the 45 metre level to the surface. The reef yielded gold at 300 g/t in the upper levels, but became gradually poorer at depth. Present geologists of N.S.W. Geol. Survey, G.R. Mcllveen and B.P.J. Stevens, believe that many similar Australian enrichments were formed between the surface and its ancient water table level during the extended period of weathering in the Eocene or pre-Eocene. They concede, however, that further supergene movement of gold may have occurred since the early Tertiary. Large quantities of Mesozoic supergene gold of extreme fineness (Au 99.7%, Cu +òFe 0.3%; Leibius 1885) was found at Mt. Morgan near the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland. Lower Jurassic sediments cover part of the gossan in a small depression caused by oxidation and collapse of the Main Pipe, thus showing that the supergene gold is pre-Lower Jurassic (Cornelius, 1968). Because the Lower Jurassic landscape around Mt. Morgan was mature with a surface slope of less than 10 (Playford and Cornelius, 1967), erosion would have been very slow. Moreover, once all sulphides had been removed from the ore body the Lower Jurassic environment would have reverted from highly acid to alkaline as it is at present. Accordingly, gold, goethite and 1. "This paper focuses on modeling of the scanning laser epitaxy (SLE) process that is currently being investigated and developed at the Georgia Institute of Technology. SLE is a laser-based manufacturing process for the creation of equiaxed, directionally solidified and single-crystal deposits of nickel superalloys onto superalloy substrates through melting and resolidifícation of alloy powders using a scanning laser beam. The thermal modeling of the system, done in a commercial CFD software package, simulates a heat source moving over a powder bed and dynamically adjusts the property values for consolidating CMSX-4 nickel superalloy powder. The associated melting and re-solidification process is modeled using an immediate consolidation approach, and the predicted melt depth is compared with the experimental data obtained. For a given position of the beam, geometrical parameters of the melt pool are used to estimate the resulting microstructure. The influence of the processing parameters on the microstructural evolution is also discussed. Wear and damage during operation limits the lifetime of these components and necessitates the replacement of numerous airfoils within the engines. Due to the high cost of producing SX cast turbine blades, the cost of replacing each blade can be several hundred to several thousand dollars. With each engine containing several hundred blades, the cost to replace all blades can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hence, it is of great interest to develop a process that can restore the single crystal microstructure at the locations of material loss and allow for the blades to be repaired and reused rather than be scrapped and replaced."

THE mining regulations of British Columbia and Mexico present some features which might well be copied in the United States, if we are to have a complete revision of the laws governing mining titles. 1. First and foremost is the "square" location, which would mean the abolition of extralateral rights. This is a condition in both of the countries above named which has seemed to work no hardship upon any one, and certainly the limitation of underground rights by vertical planes through all lines makes a locator's rights clear. In view of the long and costly litigation which has involved so seriously many of our most important mining districts, it would seem to be the part of wisdom to avoid a repetition of similar trouble on titles of lode mining claims, by the enactment of a law similar to that in force in British Columbia. Objections have been raised by representatives of English companies to the investment of large amounts of money in mining operations in the United States, because of the insecurity of title under the present apex law; and the statement has been made to me personally by one of the largest English operators, that he would never again consent to the purchase of mines in the United States, preferring Mexico with all its revolutionary troubles to the danger of encroachment upon his underground rights by an unscrupulous neighbor. Without going into further argument as to the desirability of the "square location," it should be sufficient to say to those who are inclined to "let well enough alone." and still stick to the "law of the apex" that there have never been any serious objections raised to this feature of the square location in either British Columbia or Mexico. There are well founded and logical reasons for abandoning the doctrine of extralateral rights since it is so difficult of interpretation; the most natural substitute being a law similar to that of British Columbia, giving to each locator an area 1,500 ft. square.

Up to today, it has been very difficult to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the status and production process of a construction site. It is becoming more and more important to be able to analyze this process so as to notice bottlenecks and interruptions on the site early on. The high costs of each shift in special foundation industry mean that making the wrong decision and/or interruptions can put the financial result at risk. Previously, keeping reliable data meant manual process documentation. This was done either by an additional staff member (incurring high additional costs for training, education, etc.) or by the equipment operators. The latter is critical, because they have to initiate every process step change, leaving no time to log data separately. Studies have shown that there are considerable deviations from the actual process steps. In this paper, a seamless, automated method will be introduced to analyze the construction process. This method recognizes each process step from the equipment data. The main purpose of the data recorded by the piling rig is the need of quality reports and now basis for the presented analysis. Here, a method was successfully transferred from theoretical computer science (compiler construction field) to find application for process recognition. Because the execution of works in special foundation construction can always be defined sequentially and therefore also practiced sequentially, recognition can occur step-by-step. Our method always recognizes the next step, so it does not have to monitor as much data at the same time. Individual trigger points are easier to define. Unlike solutions that are based on a global approach and allocate suitable process steps to data patterns, thereby also creating gaps, the presented method is always seamless. Furthermore, this method can be applied regardless of time or location provided that the necessary machine data is available, which is normally the case with production data logging. This means that construction sites even from the past can also be analyzed and the results used for comparisons. The first results from the analysis of a complete continuous flight augering (CFA piles) installation process of a construction site will be presented.
