Pitcairn Island, the last remaining British Colony in the Pacific Ocean, falls in the S.E. Pacific. Its location, on top of a hotspot volcano, suggests the presence of submarine hydrothermal deposits in its EEZ. Such environments are known to contain hydrothermal mineral deposits, as in the case of Loihi submarine volcano near Hawaii, and Macdonald and Teahitia-Mehitia seamounts in the South Pacific. The hydrothermal deposits in these areas are formed as a result of the interaction of seawater with hot volcanic rock, producing a hydrothermal fractionation sequence comprising sulphides of Fe, Cu and Zn, oxides and silicates of Fe and oxides of Mn. In 1988, a GLORIA survey from the RRS Charles Darwin confirmed the existence of recent volcanism within the Pitcairn Island EEZ. A later bathymetric and sampling survey by the FS Sonne of the region round Pitcaim Island revealed submarine volcanoes approximately 80 km ESE of the island. Hydrothermal mineral deposits were recovered from them, and comprise finely laminated crusts of Fe oxides containing up to 50% Fe, and laminated hydrothermal Mn crusts up to 5 cm thick. Both morphologically and chemically the latter are similar to those from mid-ocean ridge and island arc settings, containing up to 50% Mn, associated with sulphides, and represent first discovery of such deposits associated with mid-plate "hotspot" volcanoes. Massive sulphide deposits are thought to occur within the volcanic pile.

"Introduction“CAN YQUR Company afford not to train?"" This question was asked by Jack Taylor in the Factory Management Magazine for June, 1950. Mr. Taylor went on to say, ""No, it can't; no Company can"". It's true that many training programmes have not done the job they were designed to do because of a number of factors such as parts of management resenting training, management failing to understand the abstract values of training, and management giving impossible assignments or picking the wrong trainers. However, Mr. Taylor summarizes his article by saying that a properly-designed and •conducted training programme brings a company or a corporation to the point where the question is: ""Can my Company afford not to train?""About two years ago, in July, 1952, Nevada Mines Division of the Kennecott Copper Corporation embarked on a training programme, the same type of programme that had been inaugurated earlier at the •Utah Copper Division at Bingham, Magna, and Garfield, Utah. President Charles Cox of Kennecott, in •a speech made •before the Utah Bankers Association in June of 1951, stated that, ""I think that our programme of employee training is one of the most important phases of our entire operation"". That statement might be said to be one of the guiding principles of training at Nevada Mines Division. Training is supported by top managements and down the line to Division managements. As the years go by, the Company expects to receive many benefits from training."

This publication presents a simplified graphic method for determining the explosibility of mine atmospheres under mine-fire conditions from mine- atmosphere composition data. Sometimes it is necessary to seal part of a mine during a fire to exclude air and thus extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, liberation of methane and formation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the sealed area may create an ex- plosive or flammable atmosphere if enough oxygen is present to support combustion. On the other hand, the oxygen concentration may be reduced through combustion processes and the concentration of inert gases (nitrogen and carbon dioxide) increased enough to render the atmosphere within the sealed area non-explosive. Before an area is unsealed, it is extremely important to know if the sealed atmosphere contains Flammable gases in proportions that might form explosive mixtures when air is introduced. If an explosive mixture forms and the fire is rekindled, a gas explosion will result. Various experimental methods may be used to determine the explosibility of a particular mine atmosphere; however, these methods usually are impracticable in the field.

SME hopes to publish its first separate volume of Mining Exploration Transactions later this year. The reason for this separate publication was stated in "Rock in the BOX," December 1969 [ ], p. 14, as follows: "Because of the great upsurge in mineral exploration (during) the last few years and the fragmentation and narrow specialization of the earth sciences into a great many fields not directly related to exploration, many explorationists feel that a need for a special journal devoted to mineral exploration now exists." To summarize the history behind this change in publication policy of the Mining and Exploration Division, we go back to 1968 when a small group of M&E Division members advocated the establishment of an entirely separate journal devoted specifically to exploration. S. Parker Gay Jr. was appointed chairman of an ad hoc committee to investigate the feelings of the other Division members toward such a journal. Approximately one thousand questionnaires were sent out and the returns showed an extremely favorable reaction. Gay reported the results of his survey to the M&E Division Executive Committee Meeting in Salt Lake City in September 1969. These results were also published in the December 1969 issue of [ ].

The tensile behavior of bcc ordered P' AuZn single crystals (CsCl structure) has been investigated under varying conditions of temperature, composition, and orientation. Between -0.2 and 0.4 T, multi-stage hardening occurs fm stoichiometric and nonstoichio-metric crystals oriented near the middle of the primary stereographic triangle. At higher and lower temperatures, parabolic type hardening occurs, followed by work - softening at the higher temperatwes. Deviations from stoichiometry give rise to increased flow stresses. Multi-stage hardening was observed for most orientations, except along the [loll-[lll] boundary and near the [001] corner of the stereo -graphic triangle, where parabolic type hardening occurs. Along two slip systems, (hk0)[001] and (, operate simultaneously while in the [001] comer, slip occurs mainly on the system. Electron microscopy of deformed crystals revealed bundles of edge dislocations forming walls approximately Perpendicular to the glide plane. In general the plasticity of 4' AuZn closely resembles the plasticity of bcc crystals. In recent years, considerable interest has arisen concerning the mechanical properties of the CsCl type intermetallic compounds Ag Mg,'- Fe co,' and Ni Al.'-' The compound P'AuZn is structurally similar. It has a low and congruent melting point of 725"~,'" remains ordered up to the melting point,16 and pos-esses a range of solid solubility from 47.5 to 52.0 at. pct Au at room temperature.15 The present paper reports the results of an investigation on the general tensile behavior of material in single crystal form. Some dislocation configurations characteristic of the deformed state are also reported. The results of a detailed study of the slip geometry in AuZn are presented in a separate paper.17 PROCEDURE Alloy preparation, crystal growing techniques, and the procedure followed in selecting specimens of minimum composition variation are reported elsewhere.17 Dumb-bell shaped tensile specimens were prepared by carefully machining single crystals in a jewellers' lathe to a gage length of 0.80 in. and diam of 0.090 in. Back-reflection Laue X-ray patterns and room temperature tensile tests revealed that machining damage could be eliminated by electrochemically polishing 0.005 in. from the machined surface followed by annealing at 300°C for 1 hr. Specimens were polished in fresh 5 pct KCN solution (40°C, 12 v). Experiments were performed by gripping specimens in a self-aligning pin-chuck and threaded collet system, then straining in a floor model Instron tensile machine. All tests were performed in duplicate. Experimental variables included temperature, composition, and orientation. Unless otherwise stated the strain rate was 2.5 x 10"3 per sec. Liquid testing environments included nitrogen (WOK), nitrogen cooled petroleum ether (133" to 293"K), and silicone oil (293" to 488°K). Resolved shear stress-shear strain curves were electronically computed from autographically recorded load-elongation curves. Stress and strain were resolved on the macroscopic noncrystallographic (hkO) [001] system operative under the specific test conditions of temperature, strain rate, and orientation reported earlier.17 RESULTS The temperature dependence of the work-hardening curves is shown in Fig. 1 for gold-rich crystals of 51.0 at. pct Au oriented near the center of the stereo-graphic triangle. Over the range of intermediate temperatures from -200" to 400°K, they are very similar to those classically observed for fcc metals (reviewed by Nabarro et al.).'' The beginning of deformation is characterized by a region of decreasing hardening rate, stage 0, which is followed by a region of low linear hardening, stage I, and then a region of higher linear hardening, stage 11. At the higher temperatures, stage 111 is observed, a region of decreasing hardening rate. Over the intermediate temperature range, the extent of stage 0 and of the slow transition between stages I and I1 decreases with increasing temperature. Total ductility is large, often greater than 300 pct shear. As the temperature is either increased or decreased, the extent of stage I is decreased, giving rise to parabolic type flow and reduced ductility. Similar temperature effects have been reported for bcc ~r~stals.~~-~~ Below -14O°K, hardening is terminated in brittle fracture while above -400°K. initial hardening is followed first by work-softening and then by chisel-edge type ductile fracture. Pyrite is one of sulfide minerals most widely distributed in the earth. During the flotating separation of metal sulfide and the floating desulfation of coal, it is often requaired to restrain pyrite. However, the result is not very satisfactory because of the little difference of floatability of minerals to be separated. The problem is extremely outstanding for the floating desulfation of coal. Researchers carried out a number of experiments with T. ferrooxidans (Yang et al, 2001; Zhou et al, 2000; Zhou et al, 2001; Wei et al, 2001) for an enhanced restraint to pyrite. The results showed that the T. ferrooxidans after being cultured works the best in restraining pyrite. After 10 min pretreatment, the removal rate of pyrite from coal is up to 80%~90%. The research results by Yuan Xin et al (Yuan et al, 2000) show that T. ferrooxidans can restrain effectively the floatability of pyrite and can reduce the recovery of pyrite from 95% to 8%. Though the restraining properties of T. ferrooxidans to pyrite have been proved by many tests and experiments, there are very limited reports on its restraining mechanism. Thus, a systematic experimental research is carried out in this paper.

The Cresson Deposit is located in central Colorado within the historic Cripple Creek Mining District. The deposit has moved from its initial discovery in 1990 to full production in less than five years (current reserve nearly two million ounces). This accomplishment required a great deal of cooperative teamwork between the exploration, development, permitting and corporate groups. Nowhere was this cooperation more evident than in the construction of the geologic block model. The detailed modeling of gold and its metallurgical characteristics formed the foundation upon which critical financial and design decisions were based.

ALL manufacturers of high-quality steel are conscious of the detrimental effects of nonmetallic inclusions in steel. Entrapped refractory inclusions are particularly troublesome when encountered during machining operations. Modern cutters used for machining such parts as gears and pinions arc costly tools, which are readily nicked and damaged by hard inclusions. A single hard inclusion can so nick and damage a delicate finishing tool as to necessitate its regrinding. Frequent exposure of hard inclusions during machining, therefore, decreases cutter life, lowers production, and increases rejections of defective parts. The importance of cleanliness of the steel, therefore, is obvious and the production of the cleanest possible steel is a continual challenge to the steelmaker. Inclusions in steel may be classified in two general groups: (i) deoxidation-type inclusions, and (2) refractory-type inclusions. The latter consist of entrapped material eroded from the refractories used in melting and conveying of the steel from the melting furnace to the ingot molds. It is the purpose of this paper to dwell mainly on steel cleanliness as it is affected by various refractories used in the melting furnaces, the ladles, and the ingot molds.

This study is intended to serve three roles. First, it represents a global overview and summary to supplement and complement the five regional companion volumes of the 1991 edition of the Minerals Yearbook International Review. In this regard, it also extends previous time series under this title that appeared as the introductory chapter to the international volume of the Minerals Yearbook from the inception of that volume in 1963 until it was subdivided into separate regional volumes in 1989. The basic statistical presentations herein generally contain data through and including that for 1991, although in a few instances the most recent statistics are those for earlier years because more recent, comprehensive global statistics simply are not yet available owing to delays in data collection and processing in some countries and continued governmental suppression of data in others. The second role of this study is to provide an update to the coverage of events impacting the world's mineral industry that have occurred between the end of 1991 and the preparation of this study. Inclusion of this update is almost essential because of the potential effect of some of these events on global mineral industry activities.

The most widely used machines for grinding coal to the sizes prescribed for the pulverized coal firing of furnaces, boilers, and kilns are the vertical ball-race, roller-race and roller-bowl types of mills. However, the increased use of coal has led to an increased use of tumbling ball mills for coal grinding. Specifically, air-swept ball mills are now a part of many dry pulverized coal firing systems, offering the advantages over vertical mills of lower maintenance costs and the ability to handle strong or abrasive (high ash) coals. The current use of wet ball mills is to prepare coal-water slurries for direct combustion, although in time they may also find routine application for preparing slurry feed for coal gasifiers. In either application, wet ball mills ofer the advantages that coal grinding and wetting can be accomplished in a single step, and that the mills are readily used with fine wet screens to assure top size control in the slurry product. The simulation of tumbling ball mills with mathematical models has reached a fairly advanced stage, but the concepts have been applied only recently to coal grinding. As this paper will demonstrate, however, significant progress has been made in the use of models in ball mill circuit design for coal grinding. Included is a description of the techniques used for simulation, recommended parameter estimation methods, and demonstrations of process engineering calculations for large scale coal grinding circuits.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION To paraphrase comments made by Black and Hoek(1) on the status of rock mechanics, the general methods of applied science related to rock mechanics are: a. Observe the phenomena of nature as they occur and, wherever possible, quantify the observations. b. Propound a model or theory to explain the phenomena observed. c. Test and develop the theory by further experimentation in the laboratory and in the field. d. Use the theory developed to predict behavior in similar or extended circumstances. e. Insure by measured experiment and observation that the predictions made are valid, or that deviations from the predicted behavior can be accounted for. f. Modify the theory and practice as necessary, and continue the process until more general laws can be formulated and applied, with a useful degree of confidence, to practical problems. This paper will present an infant concept. It will, in fact, propound a possibly useful theory to help explain commonly observed phenomena. It will test and develop the theory for a material similar in nature to some rocks. It will be used to predict behavior in the extended circumstances of a

The new Paradisus Coco Beach Resort in Rio Grande (PR) is located on an old swamp area, which has been filled with relatively clean to silty sands. The swampy deposits consists of organic silts, peat and loose fine to medium sand and silty sand. The project requires the placement of 1.0 to 1.5 meters of additional fill together with the construction of light structures. The need for the fill will trigger the development of settlements in the underlaying weak and compressible stratum. Furthermore, the susceptibility of the loose sand to liquefaction during an earthquake was considered. This paper describes the soil improvement by means of vibro-replacement, the purpose of which was threefold: reduction in total and differential settlement, acceleration of settlements during the surcharge period and densification of the loose sand to reduce its liquefaction potential. The predesign is presented together with relevant construction details of the preliminary trial areas from which the final column diameter and grid spacing were derived. Instrumentation together with settlement observations during the surcharge period are presented as well and compared with the initial predictions.

Recently, when increasing attention has been paid to mercury for environmental reasons, the interest of several plants is directed to the removal of mercury from roaster and smelter gases. When Outokumpu Oy built its zinc plant at Kokkola in 1969, intensive development work was started to find an efficient and economic method for mercury removal from roaster gases. A process was developed, after laboratory research and pilot plant tests, to eliminate and completely recover mercury from the roaster gases. The process was commissioned in 1970. The behaviour of mercury in the roasting process and several possible methods of removing it from gases are discussed in this paper. Theoretical investigations and empirical tests show that the removal of elemental mercury from gases by sulphatization is very efficient. Further, it is stated how the technical process was built on this idea. The zinc sulphide concentrates contain small quantities of selenium, chlorine and fluorine. The role of selenium in the process is described. Similarly, the behaviour of chlorine and fluorine in the roasting, sulphatizing and scrubbing units has been discussed. Finally, the recovery of purified mercury and selenium from the precipitates is described.

Two massive sulfide zinc-copper ore bodies are in quartz-sericite schist (probably formed by regional metamorphism of sediments) and andesite of the Precambrian Yavapai Series, on opposite sides of a large rhyolite mass. The Copper Queen ore body is conformable with bedding of its schist host rock, but the Old Dick ore body probably crosscuts the strata. A lens of low-grade mineralization in chlorite schist, associated with the Old Dick ore body, crosscuts through 150 feet of strata. The ore bodies are almost entirely enclosed by premineral faults with less than 150 feet of displacement. The minerals of the ores are pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, with minor arsenopyrite and galena and small amounts of intimately associated chlorite, sericite, and calcite. Old Dick sphalerite-chalcopyrite intergrowths have mutual boundaries, and sphalerite grains contain abundant exsolved chalcopyrite. Copper Queen sphalerite-chalcopyrite intergrowths have extremely ragged boundaries, the sphalerite contains no exsolved chalcopyrite, and the ore overall has a schistose texture. The pre-mineral fault on the hanging wall of the Copper Queen ore body has had 100 feet of post-mineral displacement. Wall rocks of the Old Dick ore body locally have been sericitized. Andesite and quartz-sericite schists for at least several hundred feet around both ore bodies have been chloritized erratically and contain traces of copper.

Interest in mergers in the nonfuel mineral industry developed when 5 were listed among the 50 highest valued mergers in the United States in 1981. This report presents a Bureau of Mines study of trends in merger activity from 1960 to 1979 and explores motives for mergers in the nonfuel mining and mineral industry. The objective was to determine precedent for or a trend toward the 1981 acceleration in merger activity and to examine certain financial motives for non fuel mineral mergers. Data indicate that the relative value of non fuel mineral mergers has grown since 1972 although the number of mergers has remained proportionate to historical trends for all mergers. Since 1974, the assets acquired in "large," nonfuel mineral firm mergers, those of $10 million or more, have comprised at least 93 pct of assets acquired. More nonfuel mineral firm mergers involved mineral companies as the acquiring firm than vice versa but mining and minerals firms acquired were of higher value than nonmining firms. A major motivation for mergers involving large mineral firms was the acquisition of assets at less than replacement costs. Univariate statistical testing, a methodology chosen for its applicability to the data, confirms this hypothesis while rejecting other financial motives. The remainder of the work is devoted to a discussion of suggested areas for future study.

On 20 December 1983 at 8.40am blast- hole 57 of Blast RN177 prematurely detonated follwed by a violent deflagration of blast- hole 59 at 10.40am. The blastholes were 380mm diameter drilled in black pyritic Mt McRae shale. The blastholes were loaded with ANFO and primed. Blasthole 57 was stemmed and blasthole 59 was not. A poss- ible mechanism which could lead to such a detonation is described. preliminary tests showed the top 5m of a bench had the highest temperature which could not be influenced by a range of treat -ments. Small scale laboratory tests show- ed that zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium carbonate (Mg2CO3) inhibited the reaction. A series of tests using AN with and without inhibitors loaded into the collars of blast -holes drilled in the top 6m of the bench and unstemmed is described. An analysis of the time to reaction of the holes loaded with AN against temperature shows that the decomposition of the AN in contact with the black pyritic shale is probably a sulphuric acid catalysed react- ion. All the inhibitors tested can neut- ralise the sulphuric acid in the shale. 10% ZnO appears to be an effective inhibitor of the reaction providing the AN/ZnO (90/10) is kept out of contact with surface material whose temperature can be as high as 60¦C in summer. It is concluded that ANFO/ZnO (90/ 10) should be now tested in stemmed holes.

"INTRODUCTIONThe proper selection of carbon for a gold carbon in pulp (CIP) circuit involves careful evaluation of several physical, chemical and economic factors. A series of evaluations are required to maximize gold recovery at the lowest capital and operating costs, whether the carbon is selected for an existing gold mill circuit or a new mill under design.Although evaluation may proceed through various stages, it is the intent of this paper to outline some of the preliminary testwork that should be carried out to screen potential carbons for a particular application.An examination of the specification sheets supplied by the various carbon manufacturers may indicate some desirable properties on which to make cursory selection. This exercise by itself will not provide the basic data needed for selecting the best carbon for a particular ore pulp and metallurgical circuit. The necessity of further metallurgical evaluation is indicated by the fact that different carbons perform differently depending on the physical and chemical nature of the leach pulp. In the case of an existing mill, actual leach slurries using mill water are available and should be used for testwork. In the case of new mills, leach pulps must be prepared to simulate the proposed circuit.Five coconut shell activated carbons were obtained from various suppliers, all reported to be 6 x 16 mesh carbons recommended for CIP circuits. A metallurgical evaluation was made utilizing two leach pulps with significantly different characteristics. This paper describes the test procedures utilized and the results obtained from the testwork."
