A review of blast designs and improved blasting practices at the Ekati??Diamond Mine is presented along with the results of three blast-monitoring experiments. Blast monitoring was undertaken to investigate blast damage mechanisms in the mine's well jointed rock mass. Rock mass damage caused by production, pre-shear and wall control blasts was measured. Ekati??uses 270mm holes for production blasting, and 165mm holes loaded with a decoupled charge for pre-shearing. The production blasts are loaded with bulk emulsion / ANFO blends. The mine plan involves using 30m double benches. A 30m high pre-shear is drilled and blasted prior to the production blasting that is done with sequential 15m benches. This paper summarizes the monitoring equipment and data gathered to date.

NOW continuing with the preparation of the moulds I say that it is necessary to give the greatest attention to the differences of the clays as well as to the differences of those things that you wish to mould; and to know that every concavity in the mould produces a convexity and every convexity a hollow following the shape of the original pattern that you have. The pattern should be a body of a harder mated than the thing [78] you wish to mould with and of a substance that is not swollen or disintegrated by moisture. Its archetype may be of marble, bronze, lead, or any other metal, or also of wood, wax, tallow, gypsum, sulphur, or other plaster compositions-in short, of whatever you may have or whatever succeeds best for you, depending on whether the works are large or small and easy or &cult to mould. If you wish to cast them in bronze, you must mould them with loam, covering them with it and then drying it. There are some things in which it is enough to form only one part, such as half- or bas-reliefs. These are easy if they have no undercuts. Some other patterns that are easily handled are formed in two halves, or in three or four pieces, if they are of a hard material. There are also moulds for large statues, which, if one desires to make them of bronze, are first made of wax according to the ordinary procedure. I have in mind to describe every one of these processes in their own place. There are like- wise some moulds that are difficult to make, like scenes on a plane to which figures in full relief are attached, or twisted ornaments or other detached things that cannot be withdrawn from the mould without break-

Attractive mining workplaces are good, safe and healthy environments. They are also workplaces that the workforce of the future wants to work in. As skilled miners and engineers are already scarce, this is important both for today and for the future. However, the future of mining will also be subject to increased international competition. In attempting to become more competitive, many mining companies turn to rationalisation, looking to both rationalise their production and organisation as well as optimise their processes. Work organisation is important in both rationalisation and providing attractive mining work. As a result, this paper investigates a ‘lean production’ (LP) philosophy for the organisation of future mines. The aim of the paper is to investigate to what extent LP can be used to organise for attractive mining. It first defines what attractive mining work is and to what degree it can be influenced by work organisation. A short insight into the LP concept will be given as well as a review of how it is discussed and utilised in mining today. Canada, with one of the largest continental shelf areas in the world, has done little to evaluate its offshore unconsolidated mineral resources which include heavy minerals (gold, chromite, rutile etc.) and industrial minerals (silica sand and aggregates). During glaciation much of the continental shelf was covered with an ice sheet and later subaerially exposed with the result that glacial, glaciomarine and fluvial processes deposited sediments that may contain heavy minerals derived from onland locations. With rising sea-levels, beach and nearshore processes may have served to concentrate heavy minerals by winnowing and removing the lighter mineral components. These potentially valuable resources can be found with suitable exploration techniques such as seismic profiling and bottom sampling. Gold deposits are known to exist off the coast of Nova Scotia, and on the basis of form er beach mining, gold deposits probably occur off Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Large deposits of silica sand occur near the Madeleine Islands and it appears likely that supplies of marine aggregates are present close to urban markets or sites of future mega-projects such as oil field developments. This paper, which is based upon a review of literature and consultation with members of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources' Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining (DCOM), is the first step in assessing the Canadian offshore f or its resource potential with respect to quantified deposits, known and speculative mineral occurrences. Although this is a subjective evaluation, the potential appears promising. A more detailed resource inventory is required to provide a more certain assessment.

Today's rapidly developing and changing technologies and industrial products and practices frequently carry with them the increased generation of materials that, if improperly dealt with, can threaten both public health and the environment. Mercury is an element that poses great problems in the many forms in which it is to be found in the mineral processing industry. These forms are often contained in hazardous wastes and residues which may be unstable, and in which the contained mercury has value. This paper presents some of the stabilisation and recovery methods which are based on hydrometallurgical techniques and thermodynamic stability considerations.

The investigation, which was conducted at Iscor's Newcastle works (in Natal), was aimed at the development of reliable, consistent, and cost-effective methods of sampling. In the sampling of hot metal, it was found that lollipop and spoon samples had identical sulphur analyses, and negligibly different silicon analyses. Thus, spoon sampling of the hot metal was implemented, with a resultant saving of over RIOO 000 per annum on lollipop samplers. In the sampling of steel, aluminium -killed samples were found to have lower phosphorus analyses than titanium killed samples. Spoon sampling was rejected in this application since the use of titanium wire would be too costly. It was decided that titanium would be used as the deoxidant in lollipop samples of steel, and that the Leco carbon! sulphur analyser would be used as the sole arbiter of sulphur content.

Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

The Rawas Gold Project in Indonesia has a high silver ore with a ratio of approximately 25:1 Ag/Au. Four process flow­sheets were considered during the development phase, ie. full Merrill Crowe, CIP, CIP with zinc cementation of eluate and a hybrid Merrill Crowe - CIP circuit. The process plant was constructed using a CIP circuit with zinc cementation of eluate. Unusual aspects of the design include an elution circuit designed to strip three batches of car­bon per day and an elution column designed to operate with either upward or downward solution flow. Significant improvements implemented since starting up the plant include the use of local materials and labour for relining the mill, a change from lime to caustic soda for pH modification and the elimination of caustic soda dosing to the elution pre-soak step.

Lineament and fracture analysis have enjoyed a resurgence of interest over the last several years, particularly since the advent of the Landsat series of Earth resources satellites. Some applications for lineament analysis include mineral, petroleum and ground- water exploration, engineering studies such as highway routing, mine roof stability, dam and power plant siting and general tectonic studies. The needs of each study may be different, but the general problem of large masses of data is common to all. Methods for efficient handling of the information and some statistical methods for its evaluation are discussed. These include comparing the lengths of the fracture population against known distributions, trend surface analysis of fracture lengths and number per unit area and multivariate analysis of rose diagrams. Examples are shown in an experimental program for predicting the presence of reef structures, areas of potential petroleum production.

About thirty miles north of the city of Belleville (which is situated on a branch of Lake Ontario), and in the township of Marmora, Ontario, there is found a belt of gold-bearing quartz veins, which present geological mineralogical, and economic features of great interest to the profession. The district in which these veins are found is characterized as a rolling country, with low rounded hills of syenitic granite, overlain on the flanks of the hills by Silurian limestones, which lie in nearly horizontal beds, and in some places are so fine in texture as to afford lithographic stone of a fair quality. The gold-bearing veins run north and south through this belt of syenitic granite, and are quartz-filled true fissures, with micaceous or talcoid slates forming the walfs of and horses in the veins. THE precipitation of phosphoric with titanic acid, by boiling an iron solution which had been reduced to the ferrous condition by sulphuretted hydrogen or sulphurous acid, was first noticed by E. H. Bogardus in 1874.* Since that time, as far as we are aware, not much has been published on the relation- of these two acids to each other, and to silicic acid, in the ordinary course of analysis of iron ores. The following investigation may perhaps aid in clearing up some of the obscure points in the analysis of titaniferous ores. THE DETERMINATION OP PHOSPHORUS. "IntroductionA study of 256 coal-mine explosions, which occurred during the period 1909-1924 killed 4113 men and injured 570 others, reveals the fact that there are the critical times of day when explosions are most likely to occur, and when corresponding care should be exercised to guard against disaster. Of these 256 explosions, 83 straight as explosions, 89 were straight coal-dust explosions, and 81 were mixed gas and dust explosions, while three were undetermined.It has been determined from the times given in these reports (in several cases no times were given,that the critical period in the morning ranges between 6 and 9 o'clock when 83 explosions took place with a peal. at 7;30 o'clock. Of these 55 were straight gas explosions, the remainder being either coal dust or mixed gas and coal dust explosions. The critical period in the afternoon or early ranges between 3 and 7 o'clock, when 113 explosions took place, with a peak at 6 o'clock. Of these, 87 wore straight coal-dust explosions the remainder being neither gas or mixed gas and coal-dust explosions. Between these morning and evening periods is one which might be called the noon period - that is, from 11m to 7. p. m. - when 26 explosions occurred while some of these were normal type of explosions - that is, as to causes - others were of unusual cause and character, and. are discussed later. A number of explosions (29 in all) took place during mid-afternoon, late at night, and early in the morning - that is, after midnight."

Recovery of tin from tinplate and production of good-quality detinned-plate for further processing in ironworks has been the subject of interest for many years. Tinplates are mostly used for production of tin containers for food industry and consumer goods. The research carried out so far included determination of the parameters of dissolution of tin from tinplates by alkaline solution of NaOH and electrochemical recovery of tin from the alkaline solutions. During leaching, NaNO3 and methanitrobenzoic acid (MNBA) as oxidants were studied. By leaching the waste tinplate which contains 0.31 % of tin with a solution of 1.12 mol/dm3 NaOH, 0.26 mol/dm3 Na2CO3 and 0.09 mol/dm3 MNBA at temperature of 70°C for 60 mm, a degree of tin leaching of 97 % was attained. MNBA facilitates oxidation of Sn2+ into Sn4+ suitable for obtaining compact, and not spongy, Sn cathode deposit, as it was the ease earlier. Recovery of tin by electrolysis from solutions obtained by leaching was studied to determine the effect of electrolyte composition on the quality of cathode deposit and the degree of electric current efficiency. Experimental results obtained at a laboratory level were checked on an enlarged laboratory set up where continuos leaching of tin from waste tinplate and its electrolytic recovery from the solution obtained were carried out. The experimental set-up -operated under semi-industrial conditions, and about 500 kg of waste tinplate was processed yielding about 1.160 kg of tin (99 % Sn).

Energy and Minerals Australia Ltd are undertaking a study of the recovery of uranium from the Mulga Rock Deposits in Western Australia. Approximately 80-90% of uranium identified to date is present as tabular layer up to 5 m thick within a lignite seam 30 m to 50 m below surface. Other metals are also present. Metallurgical studies at ANSTO Minerals laboratories in Sydney have focused on identifying a suitable uranium leaching process and assessing the possible downstream impacts of the organic material in the ore. The extraction of other metals has also been examined. This paper provides the results of testwork performed at ANSTO to date.

This paper presents full-scale instrumented pile static compressive and tensile load tests to be conducted in the area of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Thousands of piles have been installed to support the existing piers and wharves in the Pearl Harbor area. Due to the absence of bedrock within practical depths, most of the piles use combined friction and end bearing. A new 925 feet (282 meters) long and 50 feet (12 meters) wide reinforced concrete wharf supported on pile foundation is planned. This paper will present results of soil investigation, laboratory testing, dynamic load tests during indictor pile driving and static pile load tests. The subsurface conditions consist of soft harbor sediment, young alluvium deposit, volcanic tuff rock formation and stiff old alluvium deposit. The load test piles consist of 20-inch (508 mm) square and 24-inch (610 mm) octagonal pre-stressed, pre-cast concrete pile and instrumented with embedded strain gauges. The length of the piles ranges from about 50 to 125 feet (15 to 38 meters). The test pile program consists of probing, driving indictor piles, dynamic load tests during indictor pile driving and static load tests. The standard loading procedure method was used during static pile load tests.

The laws of Kick and Rittinger are explained as functions of particle size with metal cutting theory. Comminution is shown to be basically the same process as metal grinding. The machine shop type of grinding operation is used to study mineral crushing. Evidence indicates that plastic flow occurs in comminution. THE laws of comminution of Kick and Rittinger have been debated for many years. Certain data obtained from ball mill and drop tests are found to be in approximate agreement with Rittinger's law while other data would seem to support Kick's law. In all these tests the energy required to produce a wide variety of particle sizes has been studied. Surface area has also been measured with considerable difficulty, at first because it was thought that the energy associated with crushing was that required to create new surface, later because of precedent and because a more fundamental variable was unknown. Tests made with the machine shop type of grinding process show that normally brittle materials that are usually crushed can behave like the more ductile metals. Brittleness is then a relative prop- erty largely dependent on specimen size and stress state. The machine grinding operation offers a convenient means for studying the comminution of materials in which the important size variable retains its identity. The energy required to grind a certain volume of material is shown to be strongly dependent on size. Kick's law is found to hold very well for particles below 1 micron in size, while Rittinger's law holds approximately in the comminution of larger particles. While a physical origin of Kick's law is established in terms of the theoretical strength of materials having a perfect lattice structure, there is found to be no physical basis for Rittinger's law. Because of its industrial importance, comminution has commanded considerable technical attention and has been the subject of continuous study for nearly a century. A number of empirical rules have been proposed to make it possible for grinding energies to be predicted. Of these so-called laws of comminution those bearing the names of Kick and Rittinger have been most widely applied and debated.

The effectiveness of selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during gravity separation and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at concentrations as low as 0.16 mM of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration (1.25 mM) of calcium ions to achieve the same effect. This difference is attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to its larger size, can only adsorb to every third hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every third surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

The Bathurst mining district is located near the town of Bathurst on the north shore of the province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada. This region is the northeasterly extension of the Appalachian mountain system. The area is heavily forested and covered with a fairly uniform layer of glacial gravels and boulder clay. The relief is low, increasing to a few hundred feet in the north west and several hundred feet in the extreme southwest. Thus, rock outcrops are scarce and occur mostly along streams and ridges. These factors made conventional prospecting difficult and resulted in the district becoming an excellent place for the application of regional geological studies, air photo techniques, airborne and gound geophysical methods and soil sampling. Late in 1952, The Brunswick Mining and Smelting Company discovered a very large base metal sulphide body presently known as their No. 6 orebody. Early in 1953, another and even larger sulphide body was discovered and is known as the No. 12 ore body. Mining exploration was very active thoughout 1953 and in 1954, The American Metal Company discovered the orebodies which have been developed into The Heath Steele 'Mines. The location of these deposits is shown on figure one. In the latter part of 1954, The Anaconda Company became interested in the district and decided to make a geological study of this new and promising base rrietal area. The following paper presents the story of the application of modern geological and geophysical techniques, leading to the discovery of a large sul-nhidp liodv. The Bathurst district is generally underlain by the Tetagouche group of Middle Ordovician rocks.

The dissolution of alumina and magnesia has been investigated using laser scanning confocal microscopy (alumina) and a rotating finger apparatus (magnesia) to assess the effects of temperature, composition and forced convection on the rate of dissolution in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3based slags. The two techniques have differing strengths and limitations, and provide complementary methods for studying dissolution. Alumina dissolution was studied for temperatures from 1477 to 1577°C. Based upon the data, the rate controlling mechanism was thought to be mass transfer control in the slag. The diffusion coefficients for the alumina particles are estimated to be in the range 10-11to 10-10m2.s. MgO degradation for sample rotation speeds of 50 to 800 rpm at 1500 and 1530°C was studied for both congruent and incongruent dissolution. The results show that the rate of dissolution for this is primarily controlled by a diffusion mass transfer mechanism for congruent dissolution except at the highest rotation speed. For incongruent dissolution, the mechanism is much more complex, with the morphology and distribution of the spinel reaction product having a significant effect. At high speeds and prolonged times, mechanical forces played a major role in the degradation process. The Department of Resource Industries regulates and oversees safety and environmental standards for the mining and related industries in Queensland, and provides scientific support through its effort in the geosciences.The geoscientific data base accumulated over more than 120 years is very large. Therefore, accessibility to and utilisation of the data base in the most effective manner is an issue to be addressed in terms of modern information technology. The Department has developed a strategy whose implementation is progressing rapidly.
