The Virginia copper district is situated in North Carolina and Virginia. It contains many mines and prospects that were active at the turn of the nineteenth century. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project in September 1942 to investigate and explore the most promising of the mines in the district. The Seaboard, High Hill, Durgy, and Blue Wing mines were the sites of the main project activity. This report deals principally with these four mines. Drilling did not discover any new ore shoots but indicated the persistence of known ore shoots in depth. There appears to be no indication of impoverishment of copper with depth.

Currently the underground potash mines in Canada extract about 40% of the available ore, leaving the other 60% behind in the form of stabilizing pillars. The presence of water in the overlying formations requires that any disturbance due to mining be such that no water will enter the workings. This paper deals with the factors that influence the stability of the rock surrounding the mine excavations and looks at the effects of these factors when a system of increasing the extraction is considered.

The technology of the liquid-phase reduction process known as Romelt was developed in the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in 1979. The pilot plant was constructed at the Novolipetsky Steel Works (Russia) in 1984. Investigations into processing zinc-containing blast oxygen furnace dust and slag from the Lead and Zinc Works at the pilot Romelt plant proved the perspective of using this technology for processing zinc and lead-containing materials. In this article, the description of Romelt technology, basic technological information of trials at the Romelt plant using zinc-containing materials, compositions of charging materials, metal, slag, gas and dust are presented. The influence of flue gas composition on the composition of zinccontaining dust is shown.

Due to the necessity of the prediction of blasting seismic effect around strip mine bench blasting area, the paper provides a method to predict the blasting seismic effect by employing the superposition of seed waveform at different monitoring points. The method assumes that blasting vibration waveform per hole is similar to seed waveform at monitoring point. Therefore seismic wave consists of the superposition of the waves from all of blast holes. Firstly, via sensors multiple seed waveforms can be achieved at different distances from signature hole. Then, by using the given dose and the distance, the vibration waveform of a certain blast hole can be calculated by the corresponding seed waveforms. Finally, the initiation delay time interval per hole is added to the propagation time to the predicting point. The predictive waveform at the whole blasting area can be obtained by superimposing all of the single waveforms. Considering the vibration waveform of a single blast hole changes greatly with the distance, under different distances condition the seed wave employed to superimpose is achieved from the similar distance. The experiments demonstrate that based on the method the predictive vibration waveform and spectrum are basically consistent with monitoring results around near-field blast. Compared with single seed wave method, the superposition method of multiple seed wave is more reliable to predict the duration of blasting vibration, the peak particle velocity, dominant frequency and frequency distribution.

"INTRODUCTION The Queen Mary copper property is in sec. 18, T. 12 N., R. 16 W., in the Clinton mining district of Missoula County, Mont. It was examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, November 21, 1943. Upon the basis of his recommendations, a small trenching and diamond-drilling program was begun November 11, 1944. One diamond-drill hole was completed December 16, -944, but because of frozen ground trenching was postponed until June 1945 and then completed. This report describes the results of exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. This work studies the Molybdenum effect on the microestructure, mechanical properties of an as-cast ductile iron. For this study five ductile irons with different amounts of Molybdenum each were made in an induction furnace. In this material nodule count and nodularity is affected by the Molybdenum additions; The iron´s matrix, nodules and the phase were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy detecting Molybdenum only in the matrix. Mechanical properties such as hardness, microhardness, tensile strength and yield strength show increments as the Molybdenum amount is increased. In the same way, ferrite and pearlite phases display a variation in their percentage as the contents of the alloy element increase. This element has a marked influence on the pearlite interlaminar spacing. From the obtained results we conclude that Molybdenum in these quantities dissolves in solid ferrite solution during the solidification process, improving the material´s mechanical properties.

In a gold CIP/CIL circuit, adding new circuit water to a final tails thickener and then directing the thickener overflow to the head of the circuit significantly reduces the cyanide concentration at the TSF discharge spigot. The new water is used to dilute the final tails. The dilution and recycle of the tails in this manner may have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption, in some cases to the point where the reagent savings justify the expenditure and Cyanide Code compliance is achieved at no extra cost. Potential circuit configurations and water recycles can be modelled by splicing a flowsheeting and thermodynamics package, such that changes to the composition of the water can be reduced to chemical speciation with a Gibbs free energy minimisation enabling a complete understanding of the circuit water chemistry.

"With the acceptance of an application and a signed contract for prospecting deep-sea sulfides (2012) between the Russian Federation and the ISA, at present it is particularly important to assess the quality of oceanic sulfide minerals and to reliably estimate their resources.Some procedures of geochemical classification (chemical analyses, mineral composition of SMS) and calculations (density of ore, density of the mineral part of the ore, porosity and moisture contents) were used for estimation of mineral resources potential.The key characteristics for estimating the predicted resources of hydrothermal ore fields are the metal contents and the density of wet and dry sulfide ores. However, in the future it is impossible to provide an estimate of the predicted resources without taking into account the following important factors:- the quantitative ratio of main sulfide minerals;- proportion of non-metallic components (opal, quartz, talc);- the replacement of primary minerals by copper sulfides;- texture-structural features of sulfide ores.The offered mineral classification of the SMS is based on the prevalence of minerals in the ores and partly on their composition. The main ore-forming minerals of SMS are pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Sulfide mineralization is accompanied by the presence of nonmetallic minerals, where quartz and opal prevail, and where we also meet aragonite, talcochlorite and anhydrite."

The zinc refinery of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Ltd. went through a major modernization in 1993, when the roaster and the calcine and fume leach circuits were replaced by a new Sherritt zinc pressure leach plant. The HBMS plant, in Flin Ron, Manitoba, represents the first commercial application of the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process, with /00% of the zinc concentrate feed processed in autoclaves. The process design of the new plant required definition of the deportments of elements such as antimony, arsenic, chlorine, cobalt, fluorine, germanium, magnesium, manganese, selenium, tellurium and thallium. This paper describes the deportment of these elements in the commercial zinc plant during the first nine months of pressure leach operation, and compares these results with operations prior to the introduction of pressure leaching, and with the results of tests carried out in the She"itt laboratory during the process development phase.

In 2001, the Minntac Division of US-Steel retrofitted one of their Grate-Kiln Iron Ore Pelletizng lines with a Ported-Kiln Air Injection System (PKAIS) the first of it’s kind in the world for oxide pellets. The Ported Kiln System injects air under the bed of pellets in the rotary kiln, causing rapid oxidation of the magnetite pellets. This rapid oxidation allows for lower kiln temperatures, reducing fuel demand; less heat load on the annular cooler; and higher pellet quality. Both the process and the equipment are patented developments by Metso Minerals. This paper discusses the process, the key equipment, and the benefits to the pellet plant and the downstream blast furnace operations.

Holcim, one of the world's leading suppliers of cement, aggregates and concrete, has set up a few years ago a working group “Quarry” in order to optimize the performance of its central European quarry operations in terms of work safety, environmental standards and economic performance. One of the activities of this working group "Quarry" addresses the subject of blast fragmentation in the quarries. A benchmark study of the blast work in all quarries has shown substantial differences for the various operations in terms of drill& blast costs. Especially big differences were found with respect to the drilling patterns as a function of the borehole diameters and with respect to the utilization of the borehole volume for charging the explosives.

M J Martinson (Fellow) There is everywhere a lamentable dearth of quantitative information on occupational factors affecting the health and safety of mineworkers, and as the authors point out in their introduction underground lighting is one of the factors which has received little attention in South Africa prior to this welcome paper. Since the authors are to some extent pioneering, it is perhaps inevitable that the paper should raise more questions than it answers, but nevertheless it provides a provisional yardstick against which the need for, and success of, remedial action may be judged. Before commenting in detail on a few aspects of the paper it may be worthwhile to summarize the statutory provisions relating to underground lighting, contained in Chapter 15 of the Regulations promulgated in terms of the Mines and Works Act 27 of 1956. Chapter 15 is entitled `Lighting, Safety Lamps and Contraband', but in the context of the present paper only four simple regulations need be noted: firstly, no person shall work or travel in an unilluminated part of a mine unless he carries a light ; secondly, adequate stationary lights shall be provided at stations and certain other localities in shafts, winzes and places used for winding; thirdly, mechanically propelled conveyances shall be provided with an effective bright light shining in the direction of travel; and fourthly, moving machinery to which personnel have access shall be illuminated so as to be clearly visible. In all four regulations the standard of lighting to be provided is wholly subjective, and under these circumstances the wide inter- and intra-mine variations in light intensity disclosed by the study are hardly unexpected. Nevertheless the data presented in the authors' Table I raise three points (1) Is there any evidence that the 19 mines visited during the survey are representative of the 45-50 large gold mines in South Africa, or that the shafts selected are representative of the respective mines? Mine managers would scarcely be human were they not to offer better lit working places for the survey; perhaps the use of a scaling factor (e.g. tonnes or transit mineworkers per shift, kilowatts, etc.) for each working place might have helped to put the figures in perspective. (2) Looking at two of the more numerous - and probably important - of the ten working places included in the survey, i.e. stations and tips, one is struck by the marked. skewness of both intensity distributions (with higher frequencies at the lower intensities) and the abrupt cut-off in both cases just short of pitch darkness. Thus, of the 45 meaned readings recorded at 26 tips no less than 19 fall in the lowest range of 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2, with but one tip in total darkness; of 46 readings on 26 stations, 7 fall in the lowest range and none is in total dark-'1 ness. Although a light with an intensity in the range 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2 may satisfy the regulations, it is certainly arguable that in some situations it may be safer to have no light at all. (3) In view of the skewness referred to above, one wonders how meaningful are the `total average light intensities for (the gold mining) industry' quoted in Table I, which the authors compare with illumina¬tion levels found in other countries. Looking at tips again, one notes that 34 out of 45 meaned intensity readings fall below the `total average' for tips, and only 10 exceed it. From this it may be concluded that a few well-lit working places included in a `total average' may conceal a plethora in Stygian gloom. In their discussion the authors make fleeting reference to the effect of underground lighting on productivity and accident rates, without however quoting any South African experience in this regard. Intuitively it seems highly likely that better lighting (in the widest sense) would improve productivity and reduce accidents, and of course it is in these areas that the mining industry might seek economic justification for providing better lighting. It is all the more regrettable therefore that these factors were not studied simultaneously with the present investigation, especially at the Psychological Division of the Human Sciences Laboratory has recently published a study on underground accidents in the gold mining industry without making any reference whatsoever to lighting as a causal factor. In the event neither of the two studies enables us to make an economic appreciation of the situation, and this seems to be a classic example of a situation where some dovetailing of research effort would have greatly increased the useful return. On the effect of lighting on accidents, it may be noted that in 1939 Mickel presented some very interesting statistics to the Mine Managers Association of the Transvaal2, on the improvement in accident rates which followed the random issue of electric cap lamps to native mineworkers in the Hercules Section of E.R.P.M. the previous year. Based on a 12 month trial period in which 250 000 shifts were worked with carbide lamps and (contemporaneously) 307 000 shifts with cap lamps, the incidence of major accidents (at least one day in hospital among men using carbide lamps was 1,15 accidents per 1000 shifts, while the incidence of minor accidents (requiring dressing only) was 11,52 per 1 000 shifts. The corresponding figures for men using cap lamps were 0,79 and 7,31 accidents per 1 000 shifts respectively, representing a reduction of over 30 per cent in both major and minor accidents. While these figures are obviously dated - only men using cap lamps were issued with hard hats, for instance - they do indicate a need for similar research today.

Sixty new ternary equiatomic compounds are reported with a hexagonal crystal structure that is isostructural with or very similar to Fe2P, D3h-P62m. HoNiAl is a typical example, with a, = 6.9893 ± 0.0003Å, C, = 3.8204 ± 0.003Å, and c/a = 0.54 7. Three holmium atoms occupy (g): x,0,1/2 three aluminum atoms occupy (f): x,0,0; one nickel atom occupies (b): 0,0,1/2; and two nickel atoms occupy (c): 4, + , 0. The nonequivalent 1(b) and 2(c) sites give rise to two sets of unequal interatornic distances (i.e., Ho-Ni and Al-NL in the case above), which account for the prevalence of Fe2P-type tertmry compounds and the scarcity of binary examples. Unit-cell constants are presented for the sixty compounds and density measurements on the compounds HoNiAl and UFeGa confirm that three formula weights are present per unit cell. Neutron and X-ray powder diffraction intensity measurements were made on CeNiAl and HoNiAl, respectively. The atomic posiLiotml parameters in CeNiAl were determined from neutron data to be x = 0.580 5 0.001 for cerium and 0.219 5 0.001 for aluminum. An investigation of the quasibinary section between the binary compounds CeNi2 and CeA12 revealed a new ternary compound CeNiAl. The compound has a hexagonal structure and is isostructural with the prototype compound Fe2P. Additional examples discovered or confirmed in this investigation provide a total of sixty ternary compounds that are isostructural with or closely related to Fe2P. Previous investigators1'2 reported the unit-cell constants for the hexagonal compounds UFeA1, UCoAl, UIrA1, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, HfNiAl, and HfNiGa and the present investigation has confirmed that the compounds are isostructural with Fe2P. Independently, Steeb and petzow3 reported the same structure type for UCoAl, UIrA1, and UNiA1. However, the present results suggest a different atomic site occupancy for the component atoms in the three compounds. A detailed investigation of the relative positions of the three kinds of atoms in the compounds CeNiAl and HoNiAl will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The equiatomic alloys were prepared from elements of 99.9+ pct purity by arc melting under a helium-argon atmosphere. After homogenization at temperatures from 700" to 900' C, a metallographic examination was performed by conventional methods, and density measurements were carried out by the immersion method in CCl4. A powder sample was prepared for diffraction studies by crushing a portion of the annealed button. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained with a Debye-Scherrer camera, in which the annealed powder was glued to a quartz filament, and indexed with the aid of a Bunn chart. Unit-cell constants were calculated from the computer program of Mueller, Heaton, and Miller4 and d spacings were obtained by the program of Mueller, Meyer, and Simonsen.5 The intensity values were calculated from the relation I, ~ (m)(L.P.)F2 by a computer program written by Busing, Martin, and Levy.6 The absorption and temperature correction factors were neglected. An X-ray study of HoNiAl was carried out to take advantage of: large differences in atomic scattering factors for holmium and aluminum, X-ray patters free of background darkening, negligible oxidation at room temperature, and negligible weight loss in the preparation of this alloy. The neutron diffraction studies were made on a powder sample of CeNiAl contained in a -in. diam V tube and a pattern was obtained with neutrons of wavelength The neutron scattering factors employed (x 10-12 cm). In contrast to the scattering amplitude for X-rays, cesium does not have the largest cross section, however, there is a sufficient difference in the neutron scattering amplitudes to distinguish between the atomic species. The neutron transmission was high, 86 pct; therefore, absorption corrections were not necessary for the cylindrical sample. Most reflections could not be observed individually, because of the relatively large unit cell (a = 6.9756 and c = 4.0206Å) and relatively short neutron wavelength; therefore, the intensity of grouped reflections was considered. The Kennicott modification7 of the Busing-Martin-Levy program6 was employed to determine the identity of the atoms at the various lattice sites and the positional parameters. RESULTS A structure for the prototype compound Fe2P was first reported by Hendricks and Kosting;8 however, the structure was in error. The correct structure, as reported by Rundqvist and Jellinek,9 is as follows. The unit-cell constants and volumes per formula weight (V/M) are given in Table I for the sixty compounds examined in this investigation and classified as Fe2P-type compounds. The structure type was determined initially from a comparison of the unit-cell constants of HoNiAl with other known examples of this structure type1' and from the density of HoNiAl, given in Table 11. The density indicated that three formula weights comprised a unit cell, as in the prototype compound Fe2P. The assignment of the three species to lattice sites was made initially on the basis of atomic size. Amorphous adherent filnzs of silicon dioxide have been deposited on silicon substrates by the oxidation of silane at temperatures ranging from 650 to 1050C. Various diluents (argon, nitrogen, hydrogen) were used to suppress the formation of SiO2 in the gas phase. Deposition rates of the oxide were determined over the temperature range in question as functions of' re-actant flow rates. Etch rate studies were used for a cursory comparison of structural properties of deposited and thermally grown oxides. From electrical evaluation of metal-insulator-silicon capacitors it was determined that the interface charge density of deposited films is similar go that of dry-oxygen-grown films in the 850° to 1050 C temperature range. Deposited films exhibit several ionic instability effects which differ in detail from those reported for thermal oxides. Stable passivating films of silicon nitride over deposited oxides appear to be practical for use in silicon planar device fabrication. Such films can be prepared under temperature conditions which have less effect on substrate impurity distributions than in the case of grown oxides. AMORPHOUS silicon dioxide (silica) is compatible with silicon in electrical properties and is the most widely used dielectric in silicon devices at present. Silica films can be prepared by the oxidation of silicon or deposited on silicon or other substrate surfaces by chemical reactions or vacuum techniques. The ability of thermally grown silicon dioxide films to passivate silicon surfaces forms one of the practical bases of the planar device technology. Properly produced and treated films of grown SiO 2 can have low densities of interface charge (-1 X 10" charges per sq cm) and can be stable as regards fast migrating ionic sgecies. 1 To maintain these properties, even with an otherwise hermetically sealed ambient, the Sia layers must be at least l000 A thick. Such thicknesses require oxidation in dry oxygen for periods of 7.8 hr at 900°C or 2 hr at 1000°C. Although oxidation in steam or wet oxygen can reduce these times to 17 and 5 min, the resulting oxides must be annealed to produce acceptable levels of interface charge., Oxidation or annealing involving moderate to high temperatures for extended periods of time can be undesirable. Under some conditions, there can be changes in the distribution of impurities within the underlying substrate. A chemical deposition technique using gaseous am-bients is particularly attractive and flexible for preparing oxide films. With a wide range of deposition rates available, films can be produced under condi- tions of time and temperature less detrimental to impurity distributions in the silicon than in the case of thermal oxidation. The pyrolysis of alkoxysilanes, the hydrolysis of silicon halides, and various modifications of these reactions are most commonly used for the deposition of silica films.3 Silica films obtained in this manner are likely to be contaminated by the by-products of the reaction, organic impurities, or hydrogen halides. The use of the oxidation of silane for the deposition process has been reported recently.4 The deposition of silica films on single-crystal silicon substrates by the oxidation of silane in a gas flow system has been studied in this work. The deposition variables studied were the crystallographic orientation of the substrate surface, the substrate temperature, and the nature of the diluent gas. The electrical charge behavior of Si-SiO2-A1 structures prepared under various conditions was investigated by capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) capacitors. The experimental approaches and results are discussed in this paper. 1) DEPOSITION OF SILICA FILMS The overall reaction for the oxidation of silane is: The equilibrium constants of this reaction in the temperature range 500° to 1500°K, calculated from the JANAF thermochemical data,= are shown in Fig. 1. In addition to the large equilibrium constants, the oxidation of silane is also kinetically feasible at room temperature and above. However, the strong reactivity of silane toward oxygen tends to promote the nucleation of silica in the gas phase through homogeneous reactions, and the deposition of this silica on the substrate would yield nonadherent material. The formation of silica in the gas phase can be reduced by using low partial pressures of the reactants. Argon, hydrogen, and nitrogen were used as diluents in this work. 1.1) Experimental. The deposition of silica films by the oxidation of silane was carried out in a gas flow system using an apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 2. Appropriate flow meters and valves were used to control the flow of various reactants, i.e., argon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and silane. Semiconductor-grade silane, argon of 99.999 pct minimum purity, oxygen of 99.95 pct minimum purity, and nitrogen of 99.997 pct minimum purity, all purchased from the Matheson Co., were used without further purification. In several instances, a silicon nitride film was deposited over the silica film. This was achieved by the nitridation of silane with ammonia using anhydrous ammonia of better than 99.99 pct purity supplied by the Matheson CO.' The reactant mixture of the desired composition was passed through a Millipore filter into a horizontal water-cooled fused silica tube of 55 mm

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The repository is located at a depth of 655 m in the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation, 40 km east of Carlsbad, NM. A key component in the design of the WIPP repository is the installation of concrete structures as panel seals in the intake and exhaust drifts after a panel has been filled with waste containers. The DOE has proposed several panel closure design modifications to the EPA. EPA approval of the changes is required since the details of the designs are specified in EPA’s final rule as a condition for WIPP certification. The Environmental Evaluation Group, in its role of providing technical oversight on the WIPP project, has evaluated the proposed modifications. An analysis of this evaluation is discussed.

The 3RPORT Project, includes a 5-mile tunnel excavated by a 19-foot diameter slurry Tunnel Boring Machine below the city of Fort Wayne, IN. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) indicated vuggy to massive argillaceous dolomite within the tunnel alignment. During excavation of the first reach, the TBM encountered zones of cohesive clay and sandstone presented in full face and mixed face conditions. The occurrence of Sandstone was not a “Baselined Condition” described in the GBR for this reach of the alignment. This paper will discuss the methodology to investigate, mitigate and evaluate the DSC impacts on TBM performance.

During 1916 and 1917, the E. J. Longyear Co. of Minneapolis, Minn., carried out a campaign of exploration for nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury District of Ontario. The work was initiated by W. E. Smith, a resident of Sudbury, who called the attention of W. J. Mead, Chief geologist. The E. J. Longyear Co., to the fact that explorable lands in the Sudbury District were still available. Five diamond drills were employed, and holes were drilled in the townships of Levack, Trill, Denison, Blezard; Garson, Falconbridge and MacLennan. The general map of the District, Fig. 1, shows the distribution of the lands chosen. As a result of this exploration, a large body of nickel and copper ore has been found in the western part of the Township of Falconbridge. This property lies in the eastern part of the Sudbury District, east of the Garson mine.

The impressive western San Juan Mountains of Colorado were carved by Pleistocene and Recent erosion from a thick blanket of Tertiary volcanic rocks that rests upon a basement of metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Tertiary. These rocks record a long, complex, and fairly complete sequence of geologic events that have affected the region through much of geologic time. The geologic history of the region includes several periods of deformation, erosion, and igneous activity; closely associated with two of these periods were two periods of mineralization. The older of these was related to Late Cretaceous-early Tertiary (Laramide) intrusive activity, and its deposits occur in the older sedimentary units. The younger, of later Tertiary age and related to the widespread middle Tertiary extrusive and intrusive activity, is the chief concern of this paper. Tertiary volcanism built a great plateau surrounding the San Juan volcanic depression, a complex of subsided crustal blocks in the vent areas. The Silverton and Lake City cauldrons, nested within the larger depression, were domed by resurgent magma that created keystone grabens along the distended crests of the domed floors and many postcauldron radial and concentric fractures, dikes, and intrusive plutons within and marginal to the cauldron sites. The postvolcanic evolution of large quantities of gases, chiefly carbon dioxide and water, propylitically altered the rocks in and around the volcanic depression prior to the younger period of ore deposition. The ore deposits, localized mainly in the radial and concentric fractures about the cauldrons and in the associated graben faults, include fissure veins, chimneys, replacements, and disseminations in volcanic and underlying basement rocks. Fissure veins, constituting the major economic source, yielded precious- and basemetal ores. Most veins are compound with sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite; some veins contain silver-bearing arsenical sulfosalts and free gold. These minerals occur in predominantly quartz gangue. However, gangues composed of several manganese silicates and carbonates and relatively· barren of metals are abundant locally and probably originated by alteration of rocks at roots of faults and fissures during evolution of carbonatic solutions. The bulk of the ores are hypogene and probably had their source in deep parent magmas of the shallow eruptive rocks. Total production since the early 1870's has exceeded half a billion dollars in recovered metals, with a ratio of precious- to base-metal values of about 3 to 2. Since 1930, improvements in metallurgical treatment and mining techniques have increased the base-metal yield.

A qualitative pseudoternary solidification diagram for the Fe-S-O system modified by manganese is proposed and supported by experimental derivation of an isothermal section at 1475°C and substantially 1 pct Mn in the solid-metal phase. The solubility of oxygen in liquid iron containing 1 pct Mn and sulphur contents up to 0.9 pct has been measured at 1600°C and found to increase as the sulphur content exceeds 0.15 pct. AS has been pointed out previously,' all oxide and sulphide inclusions in steel, excluding mechanically entrained matter, result from modifications of the basic Fe-S-O system. Therefore, one method of attack on the problem of the mechanism of deoxida-tion and inclusion formation is to examine the influence of deoxidizers on the Fe-S-O liquidus diagram. This approach has been adopted in work on the subject being carried out at the Metals Research Laboratories of the Electro Metallurgical Co. and has resulted in the postulation of types of solidification diagrams for the Fe-S-O system modified with common deoxidizers. This method has been of considerable assistance in interpretation of the factors affecting the formation of inclusions.' For the most part, however, these diagrams have been highly speculative. They were constructed primarily by inference from the pertinent binary and ternary systems and from the appearance of inclusions produced by specific deoxidizers. Moreover, since the systems contain four or more components, simplifying assumptions and qualifications were necessary in order to permit their representation as modifications of the Fe-S-O diagram. Consequently, experimental confirmation of the type of construction employed for these diagrams is desirable, and the present paper is concerned with such evidence. The addition of manganese to the Fe-S-O system was selected for initial investigation. Manganese is an important component of practically all steel and is, therefore, of fundamental interest. Because of its great affinity for sulphur, manganese has a more profound effect on the sulphide side of the Fe-S-O diagram than any of the other common deoxidizing eletments. In addition, more quantitative information pertaining to the contiguous binary and ternary systems involving iron, manganese, sulphur, and oxygen is available than for the other deoxidizers. Fe(Mn)-S-O Solidification Diagram Many of the side diagrams of interest in connection with this system are known. The Fe-Mn binary has been well established by several investigators;% the Fe-O system has been clarified by Darken and Gurry;' and FeO-MnO diagrams have been published by Herty,5 Andrew, Maddocks, and Howat,6 and by Hay, Howat, and White.7 The Mn-O diagram does not appear to have been derived experimentally, but the portion of 'it that is of interest can be visualized easily from a consideration of the melting points of Mn and MnO and the fact that a broad miscibility gap must exist between them. The ternary Fe-Mn-O diagram has been discussed by Benedicks and Löfquist,8 Wentrup,9 and by Körber and Oelsen.10 Experimental study of the Fe-Mn-O system has been carried out by Körber and Oelsen and to a lesser degree by Chipman, Gero, and Winkler,11 Hilty and Crafts," and others. On the basis of published information, then, an outline of the Fe-Mn-O liquidus diagram can be constructed as illustrated by Fig. 1. In this, as in all succeeding diagrams, transformations such as the ?-? reaction in iron have been ignored for purposes of simplification. The arrows denote falling temperature.
