RECENT interest in germanium centers around its use as a semi-conductor of electricity in electronic devices. It is generally believed that germanium transistors, diodes, triodes, photocells, and rectifiers will largely replace the present-day vacuum tubes. The germanium electronic devices are much smaller, lighter, and more resistant to shock, and they require only a small fraction of current required for conventional devices. Hence only a small amount of heat is given off by the equipment. This development will require many times the quantity of germanium now being produced, which in 1948 was approximately 1000 lb1 and was obtained almost entirely from zinc ores in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. "SynopsisThe relationship between niobium content and austenite grain growth has been investigated through hot rolling simulation on a Bähr dilatometer. The effect of delay time between passes during rough rolling in Nbmicroalloyed steels with nitrogen contents typical for electric arc furnace (EAF) melting was studied. The results indicate that the grain growth constants n, Q, and A increase with an increase in Nb content. The activation energy for austenite grain growth Q was found to be in the range of 239 to 572 kJ/mol, the exponential constant n ranged from 2.8 to 6.2, and the material and processing condition constant A from 4.24 × 1012 to 4.96 × 1028, for steels with niobium contents ranging from 0.002% Nb to 0.1% Nb. A general constitutive equation for the prediction of austenite grain growth in these Nb-microalloyed steels under rough rolling conditions has been developed. Good agreement between the experimental and the predicted values was achieved with this constitutive equation.IntroductionGrain refinement has been found to increase both the strength and toughness of steels (Gao and Baker, 1998; Sharma, Lakshmanan, and Kirkaldy, 1984; Seok et al., 2014; Maalekian et al., 2012). It is also known that the austenite grain size directly influences the microstructure, and thus the mechanical properties, of the steel (Maalekian et al., 2012; Yue et al., 2010). Effective grain growth control is reported to be achieved through addition of precipitate-forming elements, such as Nb that, slow down the grain boundary migration through pinning and solute drag mechanisms (Yu et al., 2010; Olasolo et al., 2011; Alogab et al., 2007). Much work has been carried out on austenite grain lsize control by the addition of precipitate-forming elements that have a strong affinity for interstitial elements, such as carbon and nitrogen, which form the dispersed pinning particles to inhibit the austenite grain growth (Alogab et al. 2007; Hodgson and Gibbs, 1992; Nanba et al., 2003; Flores and Martinez, 1997; Rollett, Srolovitz and Anderson, 1989). Austenite grain growth can be described using a conventional or a modelling approach. With conventional approaches (e.g. metallography), in-situ monitoring of austenite grain growth at high temperatures is impossible. Modelling the grain growth behaviour based on available data is the ideal option. To quantitatively describe austenite grain growth therefore requires development of a sound mathematical austenite grain growth equation that accounts for the effects of the varying microalloying elements in inhibiting austenite grain growth. Numerous attempts have been made to develop an empirical model based on the general equation developed by Sellars and Whiteman (1979). Many of these models do not account for the direct effects of the microalloying elements such as Nb in austenite grain growth control [Fu et al., 2011; Wang and Wang, 2008; Wang et al., 2006; Shanmugama et al., 2005; Banerjee et al., 2010; Pous-Romeroa et al., 2013). The current work has considered this limitation, taking into account the direct effect of niobium in grain growth control during thermal processing. This is done by incorporating the initial austenite grain size Do and the microalloying element niobium in the development of a constitutive equation for grain growth prediction in Nb-containing microalloyed steels."

A quantitative x-ray diffraction method has been developed for the analysis of alteration minerals in wallrock. Alteration data are plotted and contoured (analogous to geochemical data). Alteration trends outlined by this technique correlate closely with geochemical anomalies, and in some cases attend well beyond the perimeter of anomalous base metal values. "Monomineralic contouring," applied originally to porphyry-type mineralization, has been extended to other types of mineralization, including volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Equipment and techniques used in the quantitative measurement of alteration mineralogy are discussed.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 528 natural gas samples from 21 States collected during calendar year 1965 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the' Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analysis published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4

The regional shear zone runs along or near the southern margin of the Chinhoyi greenstone belt. It hosts four of the seven mines in the southern part of the belt with recorded production above 100 kg Au, including the top two current producers. Displacement occurred in the late Archaean, producing a shear zone with a trend ranging from northeast at Golden Kopje to east at Muriel. The orebodies at the two mines formed synchronously with the shearing and show strong but contrasting structural controls on mineralisation. The Golden Kopje orebodies plunge to the southwest, parallel to the intersection of curved foliation with discrete shear planes and sub-perpendicular to local stretching lineations. The Muriel orebodies plunge steeply west but parallel to local stretching lineations. The greatest fluid flow during mineralisation of the shear zone was along either the intersection of fabrics (Golden Kopje) or the extension direction (Muriel). There is no unique relation between the orebodies and the extension or shear direction. Where earlier mining has not established the directions of the oreshoots it is essential to understand the possible structurally controlled geometries of orebodies before planning a drilling programme to evaluate their potential

In order to reduce the heat loading in the Tilden Mine kilns caused by burning coal, which in turn resulted in rapid and significant build-upon the kiln lining, internal carbon was added to the green ball prior to balling. Intensive laboratory testing led to three short-term full-scale plant tests that were successfully conducted. Appropriate environmental permits were obtained to allow Tilden to use internal carbon on a continuous basis. Findings concerning carbon addition rates, reductions in coal use, build-up reductions, fired pellet quality, and environmental issues will be discussed.

Efficient energy utilization in the electrolytic zinc process, relative to other zinc processes, is one of the reasons for its wide adoption in recent years. Designers and operators of electrolytic zinc plants have pioneered process improvements, new equipment, and operating techniques to conserve energy. As energy costs advance still higher in the future, and competitive pressure against the less efficient producers increases, these or alternative energy-saving methods will be looked upon as a necessity for economic survival. Estimated energy savings which may be achieved by various equipment and techniques are included.

The paper deals with hydraulic transport of thin and dense slurries. Based on mathematical modelling of three-phase flow, dynamic properties of the systems for pumping of thin slurry are solved. Theoretical calculations were experimentally verified both at the testing hall and in real operation. For thin slurry (e.g. bauxite slurry), a three-chamber hydrohoist with float is used. Dense slurry (e.g. ash and water) is transported from the power plant to a deposit site by means of a three-chamber hydrohoist with sealed separator (piston).

An explosive's velocity of detonation (VOD), can be used to indicate a number of important characteristics regarding the product's performance under specific field and test conditions. A number of new characteristic and transient VOD curves have been identified in the field, which can be used to evaluate explosive performance, control ground vibration amplitudes and frequencies, select the correct amount and type of stemming for use at the collar and in stem decks, eliminate explosive desensitization, evaluate primer performance, design air deck based blasts, evaluate contaminated explosives and to overcome post blast noxious fumes.

Based on X-ray phase analysis and exploratory experiments, a new technology was developed to recycle multiple valuable elements in spent Al2O3-based catalyst. The experimental results showed that after roasting at 750°C for 30 minutes at an Na2O:Al2O3 mol ratio of 1.2, the leaching recoveries of alumina, vanadium and molybdenum from the spent catalyst were 97.2%, 95.8% and 98.9%, respectively. Vanadium and molybdenum in sodium aluminate solution can be recovered by barium hydroxide and barium aluminate. The precipitation recovery of vanadium and molybdenum was 94.8% and 92.6%, respectively. Al(OH)3 is prepared from sodium aluminate solution using the carbonation decomposition process. The purity of Al2O3 is 99.9% after calcinations, and the recovery of alumina can reach 90.6% in the whole process. The Ni-Co concentrate was leached with sulfuric acid, and a nickel recovery of 98.2% and a cobalt recovery of more than 98.5% were obtained under the experimental condition of 30% (w/w) H2SO4, 80°C, a liquid: solid ratio of 8:1 (by weight), a reaction time of 4 hours and a stirring rate of 800 rpm.

The Gladstone Hill area hosts epithermal veins similar to those at Martha Hill, which is less than one kilometre away. There are several vein types in the Gladstone Hill area including (1) pyrite-marcasite, (2) quartz, (3) base metal sulfide, and (4) calcite. Pyrite veinlets formed first, whereas the quartz and carbonate veins formed later. The base metal sulfide vein occurs at depth and is predominantly comprised of quartz and chlorite intimately intergrown with pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and rare chalcopyrite. Platy calcite and massive calcite veinlets were the last vein types to form. Several vein textures occur in the Gladstone Hill area, including colloform and crustiform banding, lattice-bladed, zonal, comb, massive and feathery textures. Crustiform banded veins are the dominant texture and contain variable gold-silver grades. Colloform banded veins consist of ubiquitous quartz and minor chalcedony with gold grades as high as 60 g/t. The lattice-bladed texture forms from the deposition of calcite, which has been replaced in many samples by quartz, indicating that boiling and later cooling has taken place. Unreplaced platy calcite only occurs at deeper levels (>300 m). Zonal and comb textures are preserved in quartz and late-stage amethyst veins. Feathery textures within quartz are commonly associated with breccias and some colloform banding, and with significant Au-Ag grades.   The homogenisation temperatures (Th) of primary and secondary inclusions in quartz, amethyst and platy calcite range from 166 to 274¦C, with salinities <1.3 wt% NaCI equiv. The presence of vapor-dominated inclusions and primary fluid inclusions in platy calcite suggests that boiling occurred intermittently throughout deposition. The veins formed under a relatively flat lying paleowater table that occurred 280 - 300 m above sea level. The fluids involved in vein formation were alkali chloride in composition and low in CO2.

This paper reviews the gold mining history and recent exploration activities on a number of beaches in the Catlins area of coastal South Otago. Past mining history and recent sampling indicate the presence of economically significant concentrations of placer gold, as well as anomalous PGM, and various heavy mineral species. A local source for this placer mineralisation is considered a strong possibility, along with a contribution from the Waiau River catchment via longshore drift. Blacksand beds in Jurassic sandstones of the Southland Synclinorium may represent this local source of mineralisation on the modern beaches. The possibility of placer mineralisation extending onto the inner continental shelf is also considered. Further exploratory work is justified, both for in situ Jurassic blacksand deposits, and to delineate mineralisation in the modern beach and inner shelf environment.

Processes for manufacturing prereduced iron pellets from iron ore dust occurring in iron works have recently begun on an industrial scale. Because of their high porosity and low mechanical strength, these prereduced iron pellets tend to oxidize again and disintegrate into fine particles during transportation and storage; this may result in such difficulties as decreased yield, undesirable work environment and heat generation during oxidation. A possible process for avoiding oxidation and disintegration of prereduced pellets is increasing the density through briquetting. The authors carried out briquetting tests under various conditions, attempting to find optimum briquetting conditions. They found that crushing prereduced pellets and adjusting the particle size to a certain range before briquetting increased the briquette strength and reduced the amount of binder needed. Oxidation resistance of briquettes and raw material pellets was compared in open air and at high temperatures. Briquettes showed superior oxidation resistance.

Sampling tests performed at the Paradise Peak Mine compared various blasthole samplers and reverse circulation sampling methods. Statistical analysis of the data indicates that be-low-the-deck bag sampling produced a 24 to 29 percent error when compared to bulk sampling methods. Use of a chip pile wedge sampler reduced error to 17 percent. Reverse circulation sampling upgraded over bulk blasthole sampling by 7 percent for gold and 11 percent for silver. These results indicate that bias sampling conditions exist when small volume bag sampling is employed in production blasthole drilling.

Four conditions are commonly accepted as being needed for the development of native sulphur deposits in sedimentary rocks : (1) ample sulphate-bearing evaporite, normally anhydritic; (2) proximity to petroleum deposits; (3) a hydrodynamic system of communication between these two; (4) a stratigraphic or structural trap to prevent escape of the sulphur and sulphur -bearing reaction products. When any of these requisites are absent, apparently no significant residual bio-epigenetic sulphur deposit will form. These requirements are, however, satisfied in some areas, which include both the Triassic and Devonian evaporites of northeastern British Columbia.

Addition of an acid waste to an alkaline cyanide waste was investigated for five different combinations of electroplating wastes. At the optimum final pH values of the mixtures, metals and cyanides were almost quantita¬tively precipitated. No evolution of hydrogen cyanide was detected by a few additional processing steps, significant amounts of variable metals were recovered for recycling the waste-plus-Waste step is attractive because no reagents are required, metals arc concentrated, and a relatively harmless effluent that meets most water quality Standards for cyanide content is produced.

The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. In June 1958 four full faces were blasted, and in October 1958 full face grunching without prior cutting, Le. inducer shotfiring, was introduced in No. 1 Tunnel as a production feature. A simulation procedure has been developed that realistically portrays aggregate growth and disintegration for particular types of floc structures in water and wastewater treatment processes. The procedure requires local dissipation rates and specification of an interaction distance between colliding particles. A principal difficulty encountered in polymer flocculation, however, arises from changes in conformation of adsorbed macromolecules. Therefore, in systems where polymer flocculation occurs by bridging, dynamic changes in the particle size distribution depend upon the interaction of nonlinear. stochastic hydrodynamics with particles whose growth results from a number of concurrent and sequential random processes.

Solid Energy New Zealand (SENZ) uses a 20+ year period for integrated planning of all its business activities. It has an ongoing program of coal resource assessment to optimise future mines within this 20 year period, using a six step resource and mine planning process. Desktop review and conceptual study at preliminary Levels 1 and 2 are based on general coal resource information. Further coal resource investigations are carried out for the more detailed evaluations in secondary assessment, prefeasibility study, feasibility study and detailed engineering from Levels 3 to 6. At Levels 1 and 2, completing conceptual planning, including preliminary resource evaluation and economic appraisal to the target cost uncertainty level of ¦33 per cent, is challenging in New ZealandÆs highly variable geological and geographical conditions. Where coal deposit geometries are relatively simple, approximate methods for determining pit limits using overburden strip ratios, seam thickness, physical boundaries, and quality cut-offs may be sufficient. Many New Zealand coalfields are however complicated structurally, with multiple seams and extensive folding and faulting. Coal seams are characterised by variable dip, thickness, and quality over relatively short distances. In the North IslandÆs Waikato coalfields, coal is typically overlain by weak sediments and clay rich strata that necessitate very flat cut and fill slope angles. The proximity of these deposits to major infrastructure (including towns, highways and rail lines), significant environmental features such as the Waikato river and lakes, and valuable dairy farmland, add further complexity. Traditional preliminary mine planning techniques applied in these conditions are insufficient. Pit optimisation software, widely used in the metalliferous mining industry since the 1980s, offers the ability to analyse many more specific factors affecting pit limits, mine layouts, and economics, with more rigour and for a much larger number of scenarios, than traditional methods allow. SENZ therefore decided to adapt and use æWhittleÆ pit optimisation software for Level 2 analysis of several Waikato opencast prospects. This paper describes this work.
