The last coal-fired power plant to be built in Canada came into operation in 1994. Since then, Canada?s electricity requirements have grown substantially but no new coal-burning plants have been built. This country has abundant resources of coal from coast to coast, but in recent years, this has not affected our choice of fuel. In many other countries this is not the case, and the use of coal is growing rapidly. Although this presentation covers the topic from an Alberta perspective, some of the conclusions can be extrapolated to the rest of the country, and perhaps even to other countries. The coal found in the Alberta plains is particularly attractive because of its low cost and low sulphur content. Yet coal is no longer the fuel of choice, and a long-standing provincial government policy to favour coal for electricity generation has been ignored for more than a decade. Considering the lack of good alternatives, it seems obvious that we should look to coal as our primary energy source in the generation of electricity and for other industrial applications. This paper discusses some of the reasons that coal has fallen out of favour, particularly with respect to electricity generation. The significance of the deregulation of the electricity industry will not be ignored. In addition, the author will offer his opinion on the question of what it will take in order for coal to once again become the favoured fuel.

The basic principal in the ISL process involves the recovery of metal values by moving fluids through rock instead of moving rock. The process combines surface and sub-surface operations, with the economic performance controlled by four major factors; rates of fluid injection and production from wells; the rate of mineral solubilization; the volume of rock swept by the fluid; and the volume of solution processed through the system. This paper discusses various technical and economic parameters affecting these four factors and how they impact project costs.

On August 6, 2007, the Crandall Canyon Mine experienced a collapse which trapped six mine-workers. An MW 4.1 seismic event was recorded in conjunction with this collapse. An additional 54 seismic events were detected and located in the vicinity via routine processing techniques during the month of the collapse. Waveformbased cross-correlation detection techniques have been used to uncover 1,328 small, previously undetected seismic events which occurred near the collapse area between July 26 and August 9, 2007. This work has resulted in lowering the magnitude threshold of completeness from ML 1.6 to ML -0.5, a 2.1 order-of-magnitude improvement over standard processing techniques. Event locations have been computed using a double-difference inversion. The spatial pattern of events ultimately helps to delineate the extent of the collapsed area. It is shown that many of the large catalogued events (>ML1.6) tend to be closely followed by numerous (often 20 or more) smaller aftershocks. Cluster analysis of the known catalog reinforces prior work indicating the existence of seismic clustering on the east and west sides of the collapse. Research now demonstrates that it is possible to differentiate events related to the main collapse from those related to the rescue attempt following the collapse. The cross-correlation techniques described herein greatly improve the ability to detect small mining-induced seismic events. These methods may lead to improvements in assessing seismic hazards for conditions similar to those observed at Crandall Canyon preceding the collapse.

An investigation into the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces has been completed by the Subsidence Engineering Section of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Minerals and Energy. Changes in strata bulk permeability were also measured by standard packer tests undertaken before and after mining. The strata movement was measured by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were collected to suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors did not move significantly until the face went past the borehole. For subcritical extraction geometry with the extraction width to mining depth ratio of 124, the caving zone extended to roughly 9 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam roof. Tensile strains within the overburden tended to be much more closely related to stratigraphy than to the proximity to the extracted seam roof. Larger tensile strains were associated with layers of sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate, whereas layers of mudstones, claystones and coal underwent much smaller strains indicating subsidence in blocks. A beller correlation was observed between pre-mining Rock Quality Designation and permeability than between rock type and permeability. This correlation was less evident in the post-mining core logs. There was an overall increase in bulk permeability after mining.

The production scheduling of an open pit mine determines the optimal extraction sequencing that significantly impacts a mine’s life as well as net present value. The optimisation of production scheduling of large open pit mines with geological uncertainty is a computationally very intensive process. In this paper, an approximation algorithm is proposed to schedule an open pit mine, where instead of solving the whole problem at once, the production schedule is generated by sequentially solving subproblems. The subgradient method is used to generate the upper bound solution of the Lagrangian relaxed subproblem. If the upper bound relaxed algorithm is not a feasible solution, a mixed integer programming is solved on the generated upper-bound solution. An application at a copper mine with an orebody represented by 16 532 mining blocks is presented using the proposed algorithm. Results show that all constraints are satisfied. The net present values are also calculated and results reveal an 11 per cent higher net present value (NPV) is generated when compared to the NPV generated when the same approach is applied to the deterministic model of the deposit where uncertainty is not accounted for.CITATION:Chatterjee, S, 2014. Editor’s note: This is the first of two MINING ENGINEERING articles about the Grasberg deposit. The second, focusing on open pit mine development, will appear in the April issue of the magazine. The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc. lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in the mid-1980s. Production at the open pit de- posit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold ore body is contained within a young igneous complex of dioritic composition that intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork. Irian Jaya comprises the western half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg District lies 70 km (43 miles) inland from the Arafura Sea at an altitudeof3500 to45OOm (11,480to 14,764 ft). It straddles the Papuan fold belt. This belt forms the east-west trending chain of mountains that extend the entire length of New Guinea and is the site of numerous mineral districts.

The response of the air/water interfaces to deformation in presence of surfactants is affected by the adsorption/desorption rate, re-orientation and exchange rate of surfactant. These surface properties can be observed using equilibrium and dynamic surface tension and surface elasticity measurements. However, the effect of these parameters on bubble size in dynamic conditions has not been studied due to the difficulty in capturing freshly formed bubbles in dynamic conditions. The paper presents a new experimental set-up designed and built at the Aalto University, called Shear Force Observation Chamber(SOC). The setupallows the monitoring and analysisof freshly formed air/liquid interfaces in dynamic conditions and facilitates the study of the effect of dynamic surface tension and surface elasticityon freshly formed air bubblesin presence of surfactants. The method helps to establish correlation between bubble size and dynamic interfacial properties and bubble-bubble interaction in turbulent flow. Dowfroth 200, Nasfroth 240 and Dowfroth 250 commercial flotation frothers were tested in this study. The results show a marked difference between results obtained in dynamic conditions compared to the static conditions. The results are presented and the reasons and implication to flotation modelling are discussed in the paper. Project managers must juggle many aspects to bring their project in on time, on budget, and in accordance with the aims of the project owner. Whether the project is a mining feasibility study, a technology implementation or a construction project, it falls to the project manager and his or her team to deal with risk from two standpoints, which may be at odds with one another. First, a project team must deal with risks to the project itself û that is, risks to on-time, on-spec and on-budget delivery against the value promise made to the customer. Second, there is the management of risks within the subject matter of the project, undertaken on behalf of the customer. The project manager cannot dodge this responsibility; yet there is a tendency (particularly in smaller, in-house studies) to avoid digging too deep, possibly for fear of what may be uncovered! This paper investigates the responsibilities of project teams in regard to risk management and reporting. It examines ownership of project risk; the nature of risk management activities undertaken by the team during the course of a project; and outlines some controls to ensure that the two opposing arms of project risk are reconciled for the benefit of both the project team and the project owner.

The keen and close competition now ruling in the iron and steel manufacture requires imperatively, in the design and construction of the machinery employed, the fulfilment in the highest practicable degree of two cardinal conditions: economy of labor in operation, and durability. The daily pay-roll and the cost of repairs far outweigh in importance the interest on the first cost of this part of the plant. It is believed that the apparatus here described will be found to embody, in these respects, a substantial imprevement upon the present manner of handling ingots and moulds at our large steel-works. Although it includes a number of novel features, it consists essentially in the choice and grouping of certain approved economical devices specially suited to the particular service required. Sumitomo Metal Mining decided to expand copper production capacity of Toyo Smelter and Refinery to cope with the recent copper demand growth in Asia, and to survive by reducing cost. The expansion plan is promoted to increase electrorefined copper production capacity from 270,000 metric tons in 2001 to 450,000 metric tons in 2007. The major changes in smelting section are introduction of the rotary steam dryer, renewal of the feeding system for flash furnace, improvement of the concentrate burner, modification of the flash furnace cooling materials, renewal of the slag cleaning furnace, modification of the flash furnace waste heat boiler, installment of a new converter furnace, enlargement of two anode furnaces. In addition, the gas cleaning system was upgraded and the second acid plant was installed. In the refinery section, the existing tank houses have been operated at high current density of 300A/m2 using the conventional starting sheet cathode technology and moreover a new tank house utilizing the permanent cathode technology was constructed. Although the copper production capacity has been increased, SO2 emission has been kept the lowest in the world through consideration of influence on the environment by expansion project.

"The large reserves of low-rank coals in the western United States are at a disadvantage in competing with the more mature but less plentiful eastern coals, which are nearer important markets and are more suitable for combustion and coke production. However, low-rank coals generally are amenable to hydrogenation, and the western coals might become an important source of liquid fuels and organic chemicals when petroleum is less plentiful.In view of these facts an the tremendous quantities available, further information on the western coals clearly desirable. The purpose of the work described in this paper was to study the hydrogenation characteristics of some of the low-rank western coals in discontinuous converters. The data obtained in this manner, which are inadequate for predicting the suitability of coals for large-scale continuous hydrogenation, were used as a basis for selecting samples for further study in the Bureau's experimental coal-hydrogenation plant (26, 35). 8/ Because of the general importance of the western coals and recently demonstrated relation between coal hydrogenation and petrograghy (14, 15, 16), the proportions of anthraxylon, (vitrain), translucent attritus, and opaque matter were determined. In some instances samples of anthraxylon were isolated and hydrogenated separately so that their properties might be compared with those of the entire coal. The samples studied include peat, brown coal, lignite, sub-bituminous coals, and low-rank bituminous coals."

The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

Gold has been mined from a variety of deposit types that range in age from Archaean to Recent. The large variability in the geological settings of the gold deposits implies transport and concentration of gold by magnetic, hydrothermal and sedimentary processes. The factors that control the concentration of gold at certain sites and the grade estimation thereof remain major topics of debate. Due to the complex nature of the Witwatersrand Basin a mineralogical study, including mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical investigation was launched on TauTona Mine in order to characterize the various reef facies. The aim of the investigation was to determine if a correlation could be found between macroscopic characteristics of the reef, hanging wall and footwall, and the microscopic nature of the ore (especially gold grade). Petrograpgic and mineralogical results indicate that a correlation exist between gold, detrital and hydrothermal sulphides, uraninite, carbon, detrital heavyminerals and phyllosilicates. No correlation exist between gold and Mg, Fe or S. It appears that clast supported reef is of higher wade than matrix supported, but more work is suggested. No correlation exists between reef thickness and grade. The reef samples had the lowest phyllosilicate content compared to the hanging wall and footwall samples with pyrophyllite the most dominant. All of the correlations diagrams showed significant scatter and suggests a multi- factorial mineralization model. Gold distribution is also controlled by sedimentary features and thus it is not possible to select a single model for the formation and distribution of gold. It is evident that both sedimentary and hydrothermal factors influenced the mineralization and gold distribution on TauTona mine. It is thus essential that all related theories be incorporated in the development of a grade prediction model.

The influence of joint orientation and joint persistence, on the mechanical behaviour of jointed rock masses under uniaxial compression, has been studied systematically. The joint inclination angle ß was varied from 0° to 90° with an increment of 15°. The joint continuity factor k was taken as 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8. The peak strength, Young’s modulus, the complete axial stress-axial strain curves, the cracking process and the characteristic of the fragments, were investigated. It was found that the anisotropic response of the jointed specimens was governed by the micro-mechanism, such as crack initiation, propagation and coalescence, crack opening or closing, and frictional slip of cracks or joints. With the increase of joint continuity factor, the axial stress-axial strain curves change from single-peak to multipeak, the peak strength and Young’s modulus decrease. The specimens with medium joint inclination angle (30°,45° and 60°) has lower energy dissipation and strength due to stepped or shear failure, while specimens with small and large joint inclination angle (0°, 15°, 75° and 90°) has higher energy dissipation and strength due to axial cleavage or crushing failure.

"Three important components of stirred tanks involved in energy consumption, the impellers and baffles, were investigated to intensify the agitation pretreatment on the flotation of nickel ores. Flotation tests revealed that the stirred tanks with two impellers had an advantage over those with one impeller in intensifying agitation pretreatment, and the higher agitation speed led to better flotation performance of nickel ores. Installation and removal of baffles were also employed in the stirred tanks, and flotation tests demonstrated that with baffles, the flotation grade increased significantly. These agitator design improvements were used to demonstrate that the energy supplied to the system significantly influences the flotation recovery and that if the energy consumption of the agitation pretreatment is ideal, flotation efficiency can be improved. Data from full-scale operations backed up these results.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of nickel-copper sulphide ore at the Western China nickel mine has historically been difficult due to the presence of large amounts of serpentine minerals (Feng, et al., 2012). Many studies reported that serpentine minerals tend to have a positive potential at pH values up to 9.5, while sulphides (such as pentlandite and chalcopyrite) have a low isoelectric point(Feng, et al., 2012). Serpentine minerals can form surface coatings on negatively charged sulphides surface due to electrostatic attraction when they interact with each other, which may also reduce collector adsorption and increase the hydrophilicity of the sulphide particles. In order to improve the flotation of nickel sulphides, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and other agents are used to disperse serpentine coating from sulphide surfaces in the flotation of the Jinchuan deposit and other nickel ores in China ( Kirjavainen and Heiskanen, 2007; Lu, et al., 2011). However, it is difficult to improve of the sulphide flotation due to the high dosage and the lack of selectivity."

PX4 Software Pty Ltd is a Brisbane-based company, which specialises in providing tenement management software to mining and exploration teams operating in Australia and several international jurisdictions, including the United States, Africa, and Canada. Whilst the company is experiencing substantial growth due to a demand from both the minerals and mining technology sector, there is a crucial gap in the market for critical minerals, which will be required to achieve the net-zero emissions goal set by the Paris Agreement for 2050. To help understand and address the technology gap identified by the unprecedented demand, PX4 Software undertook the Annual Survey of Technological Transformation in the Exploration Industry. This survey involved interviews with 12 very distinguished subject matter experts in the fields of Geoscience and Geology from across the globe. From this survey, we have defined eight major categories of exploration technologies. Notably, the most transformative of these technologies over the past 65 years falls into the Geophysical Methodology category, specifically focusing on image and signal processing of both airborne and downhole data. Advances in computing power during this period have significantly improved data processing quality, enhancing orebody modelling, and targeting. This has had a profound impact on the industry. Moreover, the survey reveals that future transformative technologies are expected to centre on the automation of existing processes through AI and Machine Learning techniques. This is expected to help facilitate the identification of critical mineral systems and thus enable the exploration industry to make more informed decisions based on data analysis using Machine Learning and AI.

A thermo-chemical model of the copper P-S converter and a viscosity model for the converter slag have been developed to predict the behavior of magnetite in the converter slag, amounts of slag and matte, compositions of slag and matte, volume of the bath, bath temperature, slag blow endpoint determination, SEMTECH OPC signals, and the viscosity of converter slags. The predictions of bath temperature, slag and matte compositions, and magnetite content in the slag have been validated by the industrial data. The effects of fluxing strategy, returns and skim charges, oxygen enrichment, and temperature on the magnetite formation in the slag have been predicted and discussed. The effect of oxygen potential, SiO2/Fe in slag, detection of slag blow endpoint, and temperature on Fe3O4 content in converter slag, slag viscosity, liquidus temperature of converter slag and skimming operation has been modeled and discussed as well. Some applications of the industrial operations have been presented.

The characteristics of some common size distribution equations are critically discussed. A generalized form of several well-known size distribution equations is obtained from a differential equation describing statistical distributions. The equation contains three parameters and can describe the major features of size distributions in the fine and the coarse size regions. A graphical method for its implementation is provided. The application of this and other equations to sets of data are compared both for the quality of fit and from a comminution kinetics viewpoint. If a narrow size range of a brittle material is broken sufficiently to obliterate the feed sizes, but not so severely that excessive secondary breakage occurs, a plot of cumulative fraction by weight undersize (Y) vs. sieve size (X) on a log log grid (sometimes called the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann plot)1-3 gives a straight line of slope ~ 1 over much of its range. On closer inspection, deviations in the extreme coarse range covering perhaps 10 to 30% of the total sample may be apparent (frequently, a change in slope from ~ 1 to a value different from unity) together with over-all slight irregular departures from a smooth line. One model of breakage postulates that the same fracture pattern persists throughout all size ranges.4 The fracture pattern is characterized by the slope of the line on a log log grid. Accordingly, a distribution of sizes broken in the manner specified earlier is expected to produce a size distribution having the same slope as that of a broken narrow size range. Additionally, the slight irregularities mentioned above should even out in the summation process, giving a smooth straight line of slope ~1 on a log log plot. This idealized state of affairs does not, however, describe the distribution of a multi-event process such as that for a tumbling mill product. On the average, these curves (plotted again log log) tend to have a slope in the fine region different from and usually less than unity,5 while the coarse size region curves with increasing slope for cases of mild reduction, and with decreasing slope when moderate or severe size reduction has occurred. In addition, there are usually slight irregular deviations from a smooth curve. Most curves display two distinct regions — fine and coarse — and a few curves show one or more intermediate regions. Feed size studies6,7 show an effect which theory is required to explain. For the same material, mill loading and other operating conditions, and the same time of grinding, plotting the dimensionless ratios Y vs. X/(feed size) does not reduce the size distribution data to the same curve. Y vs. X does not correlate the coarse region, but it can provide a crude correlation of the fine region which improves as size diminishes and as grinding time increases. The size distribution in the coarse region is somewhat more dependent on the feed size than is the distribution in the fine region wherein the degree of dependence diminishes as time proceeds; the distribution of sizes in the fine region are determined largely by the nature of the material and the comminution conditions. A comprehensive model of comminution must recognize that several different patterns or modes of breakage can occur in a mill; 5,8,9 that there can be some selection in that some size ranges are broken more than others; and that, while some particles may be the product of a single fracture event, or may even remain unbroken, others result from multiple rebreak-age. Thus, breakage in a tumbling mill is more complex than the Schuhmann4 model admits in that several different types of comminution micro-events* occur rather than just one type, and these events, though different in size scale, are of the same overall pattern as that which is visualized by the model. The concept of an average comminution micro-event has, therefore, a mathematical rather than a physical connotation, at least for tumbling milling. Equations with which to describe particle size distributions have been sought for over half a century.10-13 No equation presently in general use was first derived from an analysis of the statistical mechanics of breakage; whatever theoretical basis the existing

The Cullaton Lake B-Zone gold mine was the first gold producer in the Kaminak Subprovince of the Canadian Shield . Located approximately 650 km north of Thompson. Manitoba, the mine produced 77,783 ounces of gold and 5,564 ounces of sil ver from 251 ,236 tons of ore during 1981-84 period. The depos it is a small , structurally controlled , stratabound orebody in an Archean iron formation. Most gold occurs in sulphide and silicate fac ies. Based on new ev idence, the depos it is interpreted to have fo rmed by remobilization of syngenetic low-grade gold mineralization in the iron fo rmation in a favoura ble fold structure. The concept and methods developed at the mine have been successfull y applied in the discovery of new deposits in the area. One of the concepts. which link Archean and Proterozoic mineralization. may have wider applications in the search fo r gold deposi ts elsewhere in Canada .

It is shown that the heat of solution of nitrogen in liquid-iron alloys is Proportional to the interaction coefficient. This proportionality forms the basis for a method of predicting nilrogen solubility at any temperature when the interaction coefficient is knoun at 1600°C ov when the solubility is known at some one temperature. A method for predicting the solubility of nitrogen in liquid steels, including alloy steels, was proposed some years ago by Langenberg.' Since the data available at that time were restricted to temperatures of about 1600°C, his predictions were similarly restricted. More recently, Nelssonz devised an approximate method for estimating nitrogen solubilities at higher temperatures. It is the purpose of the present paper to present a method by which the solubility of nitrogen at any temperature within the steelmaking range may be predicted from the known interaction coefficients at 1600°C. Nitrogen in iron and in all of the alloys to be considered here is known to obey Sieverts' Law; hence the activity of nitrogen in an alloy of fixed composition is proportional to its concentration, here expressed in weight percent. The activity of nitrogen is defined as equal to its weight percent in the binary Fe-N solution at any temperature. Its activity coefficient in any alloy is the comparison being made at equal values of T and PN2. In all alloys the activity coefficient changes with composition, log fN being a linear function of the percent of alloying element at low concentrations. In the following calculations the alloy compositions are restricted to those in which this linear relation is exhibited. For most systems this is a fairly wide range, for example up to 5 pct V and to 10 pct Cr or Ni. For this composition range. complex alloy is the same as that in the Fe-N-j ternary solution. Langenberg's method of prediction was based on Eq. [3], the values of log fN for various additions being taken from a graph. Instead of using the simple addition indicated in Eq. [3], he used a more complex method suggested for Fe-S-j alloys by Morris and Buehl.3 For the composition ranges in which Eq. [2] is valid the two methods are equivalent. Nelson extended the prediction to other temperatures on the assumption that logfN is inversely proportional to absolute temperature. It may be shown that inverse proportionality would result if the partial molal entropy of nitrogen were unaffected by addition of the alloy element, an assumption which Nelson designated as a "regular" solution. It has been shown recently by the authors4 that this assumption is not a good approximation. The heat of solution of nitrogen (N2) in an alloy may be obtained if the solubility is known as a function of temperature. Measurements of this nature have been reported recently by Beer5 for Fe-Mn alloys, by Nelsson2 for Fe-C, by El Tayeb and parlee6 for Fe-V, and by Pehlke and Elliott7 for many alloys embracing a wide range of compositions. In connection with the work of the last named authors it is noted that their Fig. 22 gives the heat effect per half mole rather than per mole of N2. In using their data we have shifted some of their values slightly by using the best straight line in preference to their curve.
