The present study was carried out to investigate the impact of slag refractory lining reactions on the formation of inclusions during ladle treatment of steel. The experiments were conducted on an industrial scale in the ladle at Uddeholm Tooling AB in Hagfors, Sweden. The inclusion chemistry and population during ladle treatment were studied along with the composition of the ladle glaze, taken from the ladle lining. The inclusions in the steel were classified into four groups according to the Swedish standard SS 111116. SEM/EDS analyses were carried out to identify the phases present in both the inclusions and the ladle glaze. The number of inclusions in the steel before deoxidation was found to increase with the ladle age, i.e. the number of times the ladle had been in use. A similar increase was also found after vacuum degassing and before casting. A great portion of inclusions before casting was found to be supplied by ladle glaze. This observation was further confirmed and explained by thermodynamic analysis. The present results show that ladle glaze is a major source of inclusions in the ladle at Uddeholm Tooling. I., has long been known, chiefly as a geological fact; that these materials, so near to each other and to tidewater, are of such a good quality and are present in such large quantity, as to have seriously raised the question of establishing blast furnaces there, was a surprising fact to me; and I have thought that the few notes I have lately gathered on the subject would be of interest at this partly New England meeting. The coal field referred to has an area of above 400 square miles, and is found throughout the belt of transition rocks extending from Newport Neck to Mansfield, Massachusetts. Blasting cap precision is of major importance to advanced blast design. New technologies have introduced the use of microchips within detonator casings in the hope that the electronic control of the timing element will increase the accuracy of the cap and therefore improve the results of perimeter control blasting applications. The electronic detonators have proven to be accurate in timing tests done to date. They boast cap scatter results to microsecond accuracy, but the question is, does this degree of accuracy actually prove to be beneficial during practical use in the industry, or are conventional technologies applicable.

"As mining has evolved over a century, so are the challenges associated with mining. Mining of complex ore bodies at greater depths is a major challenge requiring high capital and operating costs due to remote locations, high energy costs, water quality and complex environmental issues. In addition, the stakeholder expectations are growing along with challenges associated with highly complex mine permitting processes and changing demographics of mining jurisdictions. The dynamic metals market adds to these challenges impacting the long term development and sustainability of mining projects.These challenges are compelling mining companies to look at various innovations with an integrated approach focusing on meeting the needs of various stakeholders. Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Various developments that are being pursed in mineral processing focusing on a change in the existing mining paradigm are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAs mining is evolving, so are the challenges associated with mining. In Finland fogging in mine ramps is a common problem. Fog forms when warm and humid exhaust air moves upwards the ramp, where the skin temperature of surrounding wallrock decreases to about 10¦C. Changes in fog thickness and lengths of fog-filled parts of the ramp depend at least on climatic conditions outside, diesel equipment usage in the mine, and the length of working sequence at a time. In this study fogging problems in three different mines, namely Orivesi mine, Louhi mine and PyhSsalmi mine, with different ore types, different layouts, and different depths are presented and compared. All these mines use diesel equipment and the ramp is used as an exhaust air route. In two of these mines the ramp is used as a haulage road and in the other for supply and repairing, checking, and surveying purposes. Measurements of humidity, temperature, air velocity, and dust content were performed in these mines. The measurement results, as well as field observations are presented, compared, and discussed. The results show that fog is observed in areas with high relative humidity values when air temperature and dew point temperature are less than 3¦C apart from each other. Air velocity values were high in many areas. In addition, measured particle concentration values were mainly high in areas, where fog was observed. A short literature review of recent fog formation studies is also presented. It demonstrates the complicacy of the fog formation process. Similarities and differences concerning fog problems in the ramps are found and presented. As already a lot of new information is gained, the continuation of research is considered plausible to find more economical ways of solving and preventing this problem in the future.

Education and Training for the minerals industry has been identified as one of the key priorities by the AusIMM and many closely related groups. The AusIMM Education Taskforce has been engaged, through a visioning exercise, in evaluating what minerals education and training should look like by 2025. A common recurring theme is that for minerals education and training to be efficient and effective into the future, it needs to be comprehensive and inclusive. Some previous attempts to achieve efficiency and effectiveness have had limited success, mainly due to approaching the issues involved from a narrow, singular perspective. This paper outlines that the achievement of the desired outcome may require an approach that parallels the same techniques that are used for multi-dimensional mine planning, treating tertiary minerals education and training in a similar way to the planning involved for a complex orebody. Just as efficient and effective mine planning requires engagement and understanding of many factors, so too does engagement with tertiary minerals education and training. The major factors that need to be considered are outlined in the paper, including: levels of tertiary education and training; Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), Levels 1 to 13: systems of minerals education and training, such as higher education, (mainly universities), industry/professional associations and licencing requirements, vocational education, (mainly TAFE) and workplace programs; types of minerals or mining methods involved; volume of delivery; stage in the flow sheet, (geology, mining, beneficiation, extraction, refining). For comprehensive mine planning there is the need to develop links or roadways and openings between different levels of a mine. Similarly, to achieve a comprehensive tertiary minerals education and training model, there is a need to develop pathways, recognition and credit transfer between the various levels and components of minerals tertiary education and training.

RICHARDS, Boston, Mass.-The Butchart riffle seems to violate, according to our preconceived notions, some of the very essential principles of the Wilfley riffle, and therefore ought not to succeed, but it does. On this account it must conform to other very important principles, or it would not succeed. It would beinteresting to know what these principles are which enable it to succeed. E. P. MATHEWSON, Butte, Mont.-I cannot, explain the principles on which this riffle acts, because I have not given it personal attention. All I can say is that I first saw the riffle in operation several years ago at the Steptoe Valley mill in Nevada, and I was told that a man had been around there guaranteeing that these riffles would make the table do twice as much work and do it better than with the ordinary Wilfley riffles. I heard nothing further about it for a long time. I heard about a year ago, from David Cole, the author of this paper, that the riffles were a success, and that he was using them at Morenci, and if, we were interested he would send the inventor to show us how they worked. As we knew of David Cole's reputation, we invited Mr. Butchart to come up and show us how his riffles worked. We did not have sufficient confidence in the invention to guarantee Mr. Butchart his traveling expenses, but lie came up entirely at his own expense and put in a set of the riffles on one table. "In order to meet the growing demand for non-Chinese rare earth suppliers many new rare earth (RE) mineral deposits are currently under development, however these deposits typically include many minerals for which there is little processing information available. One of these deposits is the Nechalacho deposit located in the North West Territories of Canada. This deposit contains multiple RE minerals including bastnäsite, zircon, fergusonite, allanite and monazite. The work presented here investigates the use of different classes of flotation collectors (carboxylic acids, hydroxamic acids, phosphoric acids) typically used in RE mineral flotation to float the Nechalacho ore directly. Flotation tests are also conducted as the final step in a beneficiation process incorporating centrifugal gravity concentration and magnetic separation. This combination of centrifugal gravity concentration and magnetic separation rejects low specific gravity gangue minerals such as K-feldspar and plagioclase and concentrates high specific gravity minerals such as magnetite and hematite. The removal of low specific gravity gangue helps to improve flotation and the removal of ferromagnetic iron oxides is important prior to flotation using certain chelating collectors."

"Molecular modeling of clusters of major bismuth minerals, Bi2S3, was carried out whereby molecular models of minerals and reagents clusters were created. Their HOMO and LUMO energy levels were calculated and using known modelling equations, the absolute hardness ?, eV and electronegativity were calculated. The charges of separate atoms of clusters and the change of properties of the minerals were determined which allowed predictions of the flotation properties of raw ores containing rare bismuth minerals. Modeled complexes containing the clusters of minerals and various collectors were constructed, consisting of atoms and bonds within clusters of minerals. Major physical and chemical parameters were determined for the complexes created, including the total and electronic energy. Based on the energy calculations, predictions of the collector efficiency were proposed. The efficiency of collector was established for various thiolic reagents, the compounds of phosphorus (III) and mixtures of reagents. Theoretical results were checked and confirmed against laboratory ore flotation tests. A gold-bismuth-magnetite ore type was studied where gold, bismuth and iron (magnetite) are of industrial interest. The ore contains 2.8 g/t Au, 1.0 g/t Ag, 0.26% Bi, 45% Fe and 1.25% As. Sulphide mineralization can be mainly found in the form of pyrrhotite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Bismuth can be mainly found in the form of bismuthite and native bismuth. Gold is fine. A flow sheet for Zhelezny Kryazh ore treatment was proposed. This flow sheet consists of grinding to 95-98% -74 µm, sulfide flotation with two cleaner with xanthate addition, cyanidation of flotation concentrate and flotation tailings included treatment with with CaO (6 kg, 6 hours), cyanidation (8 hours) and CIL (8+24 hours). Saleable products are gold doré, bismuth and iron concentrate."

Coal mass strength properties must be estimated to obtain realistic estimates of coal pillar strength. The limitations of existing techniques for approximating these properties are discussed. The coal mass is anisotropic. The Hoek and Brown approach to rock mass property estimation is modified to allow for this. This approach requires the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) for the strata. In the normal case where bedding is sub-horizontal, these major planes of weakness have little effect on the strength of pillars. As a result of this the RMR must be measured parallel to bedding. This means that a significantly higher rating than that usually obtained for coal is observed. The use of mass strength property estimates in extant empirical relationships is outlined. At high width to height ratios, an acceleration in the rate of increase in pillar strength with increasing width to height ratio has been observed. The empirical relationship developed by Salamon (the so called squat pillar formula) takes account of this. This relationship was found to have significant limitations with respect to its universal application. Modifications are made to Bieniawski's empirical formula to extend its use to large width to height ratio (squat) pillars. This new squat pillar formula has none of the disadvantages associated with Salamon's relationship. Strain softening was incorporated into non-linear finite difference numerical modelling to estimate pillar strengths. The technique outlined above is used to obtain peak coal mass properties. Modelled pillar strength was found to be sensitive to both peak and post peak mass strength properties. Post peak properties were found to be difficult to obtain and required some back analysis. Modelling results were used to estimate both the strength of squat pillars and parameters for use in a new squat pillar empirical strength relationship.

SYSTEMATIC data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541. INTRODUCTION The demand for an alloy essentially white in color, which could be cast and worked by simple methods and which possessed strength and corrosion-resisting properties superior to the usual brasses, led to the discovery and early use of cupronickel alloys containing zinc, and some-times tin, lead and other metals. This type of alloy was generally known as German silver until the war, when the term "Nickel Silver" became generally accepted. The element principally responsible for the white color of the alloy and for its strength and corrosion resistance is nickel, which may constitute from 8 to 30 per cent of the alloy. The functions of the other elements will be described later. The manifold uses of nickel silver are largely due to its color, corrosion resistance, ease of casting, fabrication, joining and rather moderate cost. In many instances the alloy is finished by grinding and polishing while in others it may be finished with a silver or nickel plus chromium plate. Electroplates

The treatment plant at The Great Boulder Proprietary Gold Mines Limited was designed and erected by Chas. Ruwolt Proprietary Limited in 1934 to mill 12,000 short tons per month. The flow sheet called for fine grinding, straking, flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrates and cyanidation of the resulting calcine.In 1937 considerable alterations and additions were made to the plant. The grindin,g section was duplicated with addition of two 8 ft. x 6 ft. Abco Ball Mills to increase the throughput to 28,000 tons per month, and the flow sheet was changed from "straight flotation" to "precyanidation and flotation" neeessitating the addition of thickeners, agitators, Oliver filters and Edwards roasters.A further change to the flow sheet was made in 1942 with the introduction of sulphur dioxide conditioning ahead of the flotation section, to permit the treatment of 500,000 tons of oxidised ore. Since that date no major alterations were made to the flow sheet or equipment until 1950, when the modifications set out in this paper were commenced with the object of reducing costs and increasing plant efficiency.These modifications are dealt with under the section headings and are therefore not necessarily in chronological order.CRUSHING SECTIONThere has been no material alteration in this section although at the time of writing a 650 ton capacity ore bin is being erected ahead of the primary Jaques crusher. In this paper, the pretreatment of concentrates by roller press was present to improve the granulation of blends comprising some 30 per cent iron ore concentrates and enhance the sintering performance. It is shown that by pretreatment of fine concentrates through roller press, the content of +3 mm fractions of granulation mixture and sinter mixture permeability are elevated by ten per cent and 35 per cent. In the meantime, a sinter productivity increase from 1.51 - 1.62 t.m-2.h-1 is attainted in pot tests with similar sinter tumble index and at lower coke rate. The mechanism of the pretreatment of concentrates process to improve sintering performance of fine iron ore concentrates was demonstrated by mineralogy that better permeability help form more calcium ferrite and good microstructure of sinter, further proven by the better metallurgical performance of sinter.

In its role of providing technical assistance to the mining industry, the Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has conducted research to develop trapped miner location systems which would aid in locating miners trapped by underground mining disasters. Efforts to produce electromagnetic systems for the location of trapped miners underground and to communicate with them were surveyed, from the 1920's to 1981. Theoretical studies of through-the-earth electromagnetic transmissions are described as well as studies of the electrical characteristics of various rocks, minerals, and soil. Several trapped miner location systems are reviewed including the Westinghouse systems, the DEVELCO system, and an automated three-dimensional location system, and the phase difference of arrival technique. Tangential research, relevant to trapped miner location systems is described. A comprehensive bibliography covering all aspects of trapped miner, through-the-earth electromagnetic location and communications systems is appended.

Across the life-of-mine, water is both an essential commodity to mining, and one of the most significant hazards. In Australia, a land of drought and floods, availability of water is a critical strategic risk for mine sites and neighbouring stakeholders, with both insufficient water leading to curtailed operations and contested space, and extreme water closing operations through flooding of mine sites, transportation infrastructure and unplanned regulatory restrictions. In addition to these major strategic risks, water must be addressed in operational risk management activities in many different ways.This paper develops a set of categories for classification of water risks based on academic papers from the water in mining literature. These categories are applied to media content analysis of articles in International Longwall News (ILN) (an online coal industry news site) obtained with the search terms ‘water’, ‘rain’ and ‘flood’. Identified risks are discussed within the context of the life-of-mine. The paper uses these same categories to analyse the treatment of water risks in a new coal industry risk management body of knowledge called RISKGATE (http://www.riskgate.org, Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, The University of Queensland). The discussion of water risks in both INL and RISKGATE is compared and contrasted to pinpoint opportunities (and a roadmap) for further development of a specific RISKGATE water module for site-based operations. Martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits that show no trace of hydrothermal alteration may extend to more than 200 m below the permanent water table and are typically saprolite with evidence of exposure to the physical, chemical and biogenic processes of soil formation restricted to the low-grade goethitised upper levels. Typically no evidence of the prior presence of chert bands is discernable within the ore yet it has been assumed that these ore deposits derive from cherty banded iron formation (BIF) through supergene leaching of the chert bands and thus classified as supergene iron ore deposits. The fact that chert bands are absent and that these ore deposits are highly weathered does not prove supergene leaching of the chert bands. Quartz is one of the most resistant minerals to chemical weathering within the saprolite and large scale dissolution of quartz is absent from all other quartz-bearing saprolites, yet this unlikely process is accepted without question as the origin of the most abundant form of high-grade iron ore deposits. It is proposed that martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits formed only from BIF in which chert bands were absent prior to weathering. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Humic acids adsorb on coal and depress coal floatability in the acidic pH range. In alkaline solutions, their effect is not pronounced. In the neutral pH range, a second small addition of kerosene plus MIBC leads to a significant increase in coal yield and better selectivity. Humic acids present on oxidized coal surface were found to be responsible for the inhibited floatability of the? coal. As expected, the flotation of such oxidized coal also strongly depends on the method of pH adjustment.

Intensive resource extraction, in the form of multiple mining operations, presents significant assessment and management challenges for resource developers, governments, community and the environment. Cumulative impacts, ie the successive, incremental and combined impacts (both positive and negative) of an activity on society, the economy and the environment, can place significant pressure on social, economic and environmental capital and render conventional mine-by-mine approaches to management ineffective. Cumulative impacts can be what are most important to environments, communities and economies surrounded by multiple mining operations because cumulative impacts are what they experience. There is much to gain from increased consideration of cumulative impacts. Unmitigated impacts have the potential to delay or even prevent expansion of mining in existing and prospective areas. On the other hand proactive management of cumulative impacts can benefit regional environments and communities and contribute to the industryÆs social license to operate. Resources are often not the limiting factor to better cumulative impact management. More effective coordination of existing resources may go a long way toward mitigation and enhancement, and better planning and assessment may help avoid impacts and exploit opportunities for efficiency gains through reduced duplication. In this paper we draw from working examples to present five practical assessment and management strategies applicable to resource companies to enhance positive, and avoid and mitigate negative, cumulative impacts. The strategies are presented based on their capacity for achieving outcomes, ease of implementation and cost effectiveness and are drawn from a multi-year study on the assessment and management of cumulative impacts in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales and a follow-up study to improve cumulative impact assessment and management practice in the Australian coal mining industry, both reported elsewhere.
