F. B. Foley—The use of data published by Wever and Jellinghaus in 1931 to fix boundaries of the sigma phase in the Fe-Cr system, in the face of the author's own references to the suggestions of Bradley and Goldschmidt, Aborn and Bain, and Hougardy that the phase is much more extensive, and the very much more accurate work, which weighs heavily in favor of these suggestions, of Cook and Jones, published in 1943 and evidently disregarded by the authors, makes their derived ternary diagram, especially fig. 15 for 400°C, quite inaccurate on the Fe-Cr side and affects the extent of phase boundaries in the most controversial and important part of this ternary system. In commercial Fe-Ni-Cr alloys the occurrence of sigma has been observed time and time again at lower chromium contents than that of the 24 pct Cr, 16 pct Ni, 60 pct Fe alloy which is the lowest permitted by fig. 15 of practically carbonless metal. Newel1 reports sigma in 27 pct Cr-Fe even with some carbon present to be one of the greatest detriments to its extensive application, whereas Pugh and Nisbet set a low limit of 36 pct Cr for sigma in the binary Fe-Cr system. J. J. Heger—The diagrams presented by the authors do not agree with observations made on commercial Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, nor do they agree with two recent investigations made on the Fe-Cr and the Fe-Cr-Fe systems. I refer first to the investigation made by Cook and Jones1' on the sigma region of the Fe-Cr system. On the basis of their results which were published in 1943, Cook and Jones established new boundary limits for the sigma and the alpha plus sigma regions. These new limits have been accepted and are incorporated in the Fe-Cr diagram that appears in the 1948 edition of the Metals Handbook. This diagram is shown here as fig. 34. As will be noted, the boundary limits of the alpha plus sigma region in this diagram extend to much lower chromium contents than do those in the diagram presented by the authors in fig. 2. These new limits indicate that sigma phase should form in an Fe-Cr alloy containing 26 pct Cr, and experience with commercial alloys confirms this finding. Indeed, recent studies on a commercial Fe-Cr alloy containing 17 pct Cr have shown sigma phase to be stable in this alloy at 550°C. I recognize that the authors' work did not include studies on the sigma region; however, I believe this is a serious omission because sigma phase may profoundly affect the physical properties of these alloys and should be evaluated in any investigation which attempts to relate physical properties to the equilibrium diagram. The second investigation to which I refer is that made on the Fe-Cr-Ni system by Rees, Burns, and Cook,'' who used pure alloys and employed heating 17 W. P. Rees, B. D. Burns, and A. 3. Cook: Journal Iron and Steel Institute. (July 1949) 162, Part 3. p. 325. times that extend to 200 days. These investigators published their results in July 1949 and from these results constructed isothermal sections at 800" and 650°C. The isothermal section at 650°C is shown here as fig. 35. This diagram indicates sigma phase should form in a pure 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni alloy. Although sigma phase has not been observed after 10,000 hr at 1200°F in commercial 18-8 alloys containing carbon and nitrogen, it has been observed under the same conditions in 18-8 alloys modified with titanium and columbium, both of which serve to reduce the effect of carbon and nitrogen. This section and the one at 800°C suggest that the constant iron sections which are presented by the authors, should be considerably altered, if they are to represent an accurate picture of the system. A few of the suggested alterations are as follows: In fig. 9, the section at 50 pct Fe, the gamma plus sigma region should be widened, not narrowed at 800" and 650°C. In fig. 10, the section at 60 pct Fe, the gamma plus sigma region should be widened at 800° and 650°C. In fig. 11, the section at 70 pct Fe, an alpha plus sigma, an alpha plus gamma plus sigma, and a gamma plus sigma region should be added. In fig. 12, the section at 80 pct Fe, the alpha plus gamma region should be widened at 800°C. In fig. 13, the section at 90 pct Fe, the alpha plus gamma region should be widened at 650° and 800°C. Undoubtedly, the chief reason for the discrepancies between the authors' data and those of Rees, Burns, and Cook is that the authors did not employ long enough heating times to allow for transformation. In this connection, I wish to warn that transformations in these alloys, particularly transformations at temperatures below 800°C, are extremely sluggish and may require a year or more to approach completion. Therefore, unless extremely long heating times are employed or steps are taken to accelerate these transformations by such means as mechanical working, the results will not yield an accurate picture of the alloy system. Certainly, an accurate picture is needed for the development of better high-temperature materials. E. J. Dulis-The purpose of this work is not clear. If an improvement of the ternary equilibrium diagram of the Fe-Cr-Ni system was wanted, it seems logical that testing techniques superior to those previously used would be a prime requirement. To approach equilibrium in this system, long holding times are needed; a fact established long ago but apparently ignored by the present authors, who used the continuous heating and cooling tests in equilibrium studies. The introduction of continuous papermaking in the early 1800's was the beginning of the industry as we know it today. Since that time, the majority of the paper produced has employed an acid process. However, in the mid 1960?s, European producers began a transition to an alkaline papermaking process. Early European mill conversions to alkaline papermaking begun in the 601s, accelerated during the 1970's influenced by the dramatically higher cost for OPEC energy as well as the high cost of fiber and imported filler clay.

Comminution is the science of size reduction of brittle materials. It is integral to mineral extraction and is one of the most energy intensive processes in the mining industry. There are a number of tests used to quantify the strength of ore, which are then used to size the AG / SAG mill in circuit design. The calculated energy utilized for breakage in these devices is based on the assumptions that the materials treated are of average shape and that the processing equipment is designed to break the ore as efficiently as possible under the given operating conditions. In drop weight tests, it was found that shape significantly influences the measured rock strength. Controlled experiments with variations in blends of rock shape show that mill throughput increases with the addition of weaker shaped rocks.

Regulations on the emission of particulates from sinter plant stacks are becoming increasingly stringent and reducing these emissions by improving gas cleaning systems is a significant cost to the sinter plants. This paper describes an investigation into the emission of particulate matter from an iron ore sinter bed during the sintering of a Japanese Steel Mill (JSM) style ore blend in a 300 mm diameter pot grate test facility. Several techniques were trialled to determine a reliable method to sample the quantity of dust emitted and determine the mechanism of dust emission from the sinter bed. The nature of the dust was also examined using chemical and size analysis as well as optical and scanning electron microscopy. The paper discusses the techniques used to carry out the program as well as results on dust loading measured during sintering and the nature of the dust captured.

The primary arsenic minerals in the uranium ore processed at the McClean Lake Operation are rammelsbergite, niccolite and gersdorffite. During processing, a large fraction (80 - 95%) of these reduced minerals is oxidized and dissolves primarily as As5+ in the leachate solution. In the tailings preparation circuit the dissolved As5+ is precipitated as a poorly crystalline form of the mineral scorodite. Following subaqueous deposition in the tailings management facility, a temporal rise and fall in arsenic pore water concentrations has been observed. This is due to the oxidation of the residual quantities of reduced arsenic minerals initially present in the tailings sediment. The XANES (x-ray absorption near edge spectrometry) technique has shown that the As1- is gradually oxidized to As3+ and then finally As5+ in the tailings sediment. This oxidation process results in a temporary accumulation of As3+ in solution and is the source of the rise and fall in arsenic concentration observed.

Underwater explosions have been used as a test method for the determination of energy content of explosives for several decades. This is the only test method by which shock, gas heave and total energy values can be measured separately. The experimental data can be measured from the pressure-time curves measured by the pressure-recording unit. The shock energy is integrated from the shock peak area and the gas heave energy is calculated from the time interval between the primary shock wave front and the shock wave caused by the first bubble implosion. tb. Bubble period, tb, is the time of first bubble oscillation, the time which passes after the shock peak front to the first bubble peak. The total energy value is the sum of these two partial energies.

The Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has long been recognized as a potential source of cobalt and copper. However, the comparatively low grade and small size of the known ore bodies, the small demand for cobalt, and. the lack of adequate roads throughout the region precluded extensive exploration of the early discoveries in the area. Recent advances in alloy metallurgy, accentuated by wartime activities, greatly increased the demand for sources of domestic cobalt. Beginning In 1941, engineers of the Bureau of Mines conducted an examination and exploration program in the Blackbird district. This work was supplemented by an exploration program by engineers of the Howe Sound Mining Co., 730 Fifth Ave., New York 19, N.Y.

In 1943, the Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of cassiterite in the gravels of Morelock Creek which flows into the Yukon River 32 miles east of the confluence of the Yukon and Tanana Rivers in central Alaska. Samples of the gravels were obtained by churn drilling test pitting, shaft sinking, and open-cut mining. The gravels along Morelock Creek are about 6 feet in depth and covered with about 2-1/2 feet of overburden. The overburden is frozen, but the underlying gravels are not. Cassiterite, with gold and other heavy minerals, is usually concentrated in the first 2 feet of' gravel above bedrock and in some places penetrates into joint planes in the bedrock. The various methods of obtaining samples are discussed, and drill logs and analyses are tabulated in this report.

For the past thirteen years, the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch have hosted an annual symposium to discuss topics relevant to mineral processing. Since 1987, this Symposium has been held under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and has become one of the main events on the national conference calendar. In 1989 and 1993, the symposia took the shape of international conferences. This year the 13th Annual Mineral Processing Symposium was organized by the two universities, the Cape Technikon, and the local branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay.

By observing different coal char’s microstructures and microscopic morphologies during the coking process, the characteristics of COREX coal char’s microstructure and properties were analyzed. MCRI and MCSR were used to respectively describe the reactivity and the strength after reaction of coal char, with those of BF’s coke for reference, and then the physical meaning of MCRI and MCSR were given. MCRI and MCSR were determined by the composition of coal char. For the two kinds of COREX coal, the formula to forecast the hot performance of coal char was set up by making a multiple linear regression between the hot performance and microstructure of the coal char at 1100℃, and the predictive values of coal char’s hot performance at 600℃, 800℃ and 1000℃ coincided well with the measured values.

Natural lignocellulosic fibers are increasingly being used as polymeric matrix composite reinforcement owing to economical and environmental advantages as renewable and biodegradable materials. Among these, the piassava fiber extracted from a palm tree native of South America stands as one of the most rigid with a potential to be used as composite reinforcement. Therefore, the present work investigates the notch toughness behavior, by Izod impact tests, of epoxy composites reinforced with up to 40 % in volume of continuous and aligned piassava fibers. It was found that the incorporation of piassava fibers results in significant increase in the impact energy of the composite. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the nature of the piassava fiber interface with the epoxy matrix is the major responsible for the superior toughness of the composite.

Firstly, electric analog models are discus- sed to show fluid streaming conditions. In these models the depth of blast at tuyere level, the height of the bath, the influ- ence of different angles of the furnace zones and the different possibilities of the root of the cohesive zone have been changed. Tests to define the influence at a large blast furnace are given. Secondly, the wear of carbon bricks in the hearth is examined under the influence of gas, slag and pig iron. Oxidation tests in a special scanning microscope with the pos- sibility of heating and gas treatment are shown. Wear mechanisms are discussed fora large blast furnace and proposals for im- provement are given. Finally, the possib- ilities and value of the temperature meas- urement in the hearth block are discussed.

THE results of a research and development laboratory and pilot-plant mineral-dressing investigation by the Bureau of Mines of the complex copper-lead-cobalt-nickel ores of southeast Missouri are reported in this paper. This investigation, in cooperation with the National Lead Co., showed that separate concentrates of lead, copper, and cobalt-nickel could be made by fine grinding and flotation. An industrial plant built subsequently by the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Div. near Fredericktown, Madison County, Mo., produced such concentrates during the war years. Present commercial production at the mill is limited to lead and copper concentrates, but research to permit economic utilization of the cobalt and nickel values is continuing. The complex sulphide deposits near Frederick-town in Madison County, Mo., have an operating history that dates back to the years preceding the Civil War. Perhaps these operations can best be summarized in terms of output which are given by Tyler: "Previous to 1900, the Mine la Motte Co. shipped cobalt ore to Swansea and in 1903 produced 120,000 pounds of oxide in a Missouri plant. Another cobalt refinery erected in 1906 by the North America Lead Co. at Fredericktown, Mo., operated intermittently until 1910. In 1909 it produced 83,384 pounds of cobalt oxide, 328,403 pounds of nickel, 8,314 tons of nickel-cobalt concentrates, 600 tons of copper concentrates, and 1,353 tons of lead concentrates. This plant was purchased at a forced sale in 1915 by the Missouri Cobalt Co., which produced a certain amount of oxide in 1918 and in 1920 recovered 102,410 pounds of cobalt oxide and cobalt hydrate, valued at $262,810." According to Buehler,2 "The ore, which consists of a complex mixture of the sulphides of cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and iron, occurs at the contact of the pre-Cambrian porphyry and the overlying Lamotte sandstone and Bonneterre dolomite." The source of most of the cobalt and nickel is siegenite, a member of the linnaetite series of minerals. Its composition is variable, and although the chemical formula may be given as (CoNi),S,, it usually contains both iron and copper. The siegenite is characterized in this instance by an intimate association with chalcopyrite, and to a lesser extent with iron sulphides. Galena, on the other hand, while dis- seminated throughout the ore, is not closely bound to other constituents. Gangue is composed essentially of dolomite and quartz. Petrographic examination showed that fair liberation of sulphides and gangue could be attained at — 100 mesh. Complete liberation of micronsize inclusions, particularly of sulphides in each other would not have been possible at —400 mesh. Beneficiation Studies Many samples of the southeast Missouri ore were tested, but most of the work was confined to five samples of churn drill cuttings weighing 15 tons. The samples were reportedly representative of five sections of the deposit and were tested individually and as a composite. Only the results of the tests on the composite, which contained 1.28 pct lead, 2.03 pct copper, 1.06 pct nickel, 0.87 pct cobalt, 3.57 pct iron, 15.4 pct lime, and 23.9 pct silica, are presented in this report. In view of the rather complex and intimate association in the mineralogical composition of the ore, flotation was the logical choice in the selection of a beneficiation process. Other mineral dressing unit operations were considered as an adjunct to flotation, but none were beneficial. Many tests were made on these samples to determine the flotation characteristics of the mineral siegenite. As a result of this work, it was noted the siegenite was intermediate in floatability between chalcopyrite and galena on one extreme and iron sulphides on the other. The difference in floatability between siegenite and the iron sulphides was not very great and, in general, the same reagents that depressed pyrite and marcasite would also, in slightly larger quantities, depress siegenite. Oil fields in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming have produced 731 million barrels of petroleum through 1959. Production in 1959 was 32 million barrels, the highest production since 1924. The record production was in 1923, when the Basin produced 38 million barrels of oil and the Salt Creek field, then at its peak, produced 35 million barrels. In this report, the characteristics of crude oils found in the Basin are used as a basis for determining the best re-fining uses for the oils and for predicting the characteristics of oils that may be discovered in the Basin in the future. Analyses of 108 oils sampled over a period of 30 years are presented Crude oils of two major types are produced from the Powder River Basin. One has a low sulfur content and occurs in younger formations, and the other has a high sulfur content and occurs in older formations. The oils with low sulfur contents are generally light colored and waxy, and may be either paraffinic or naphthenic. The oils with high sulfur contents are usually dark colored and asphaltic; only their low boiling fractions are paraffinic. Alteration appears to account for the anomalous properties of some oils found at shallow depths. Shapes and slopes of correlation index curves classify the oils into the same two groups as their sulfur contents, with gently sloping curves representing the low-sulfur oils and steep curves representing high-sulfur, asphaltic oils,

The recovery of flour stress of recrylstallized are-cast molyhdenum after 10 pet prestrain at 150°C was studied for recovery temperatures of 725o 801o and 901oC. The yield phenomenon observed after recovery was such that the yield drop diminished and disappeared as recovery proceeded. A fractional flow-stress recovery parameter fr, was developed and it was shown that, independent of recovery ternperatzwe, equal f, values of about 0.16 produced superposition of stress-strain curves except for the initial yield phenomenon. The activation energy for low degrees oj recovery was found to he 32,600 cal per mole, in close agreement with a reported valzie for difjzdsion of carbon in molybdenum. For values of fr greater than about 0.15 where recovery was thought to predominate over strain aging, the activation energy varied from 43,600 to 82,500 cal per mole and increased with increasing recovery and recovery temperature. A 10 pet pre-strain shifted the ductile-brittle transition temperature, as indicated by tensile elongation, from 10°C. to about -22"C. A 100-hr recovery anneal at 801oC was shown to shift the transition temperature to about —5oC, the major shift occurring during the first hour of recovery. ThE recovery of cold-worked metals is accompanied by changes in the arrangement of the dislocations generated during cold work. In recent years, the use of transmission electron microscopy has allowed direct observation of some of the dislocation configurations formed, such as "tangles", networks, cells, subboundaries, and loops. These observations have recently been reviewed by Keh and Weissmann.' Accordingly, some understanding has been gained concerning the nature of the dislocation rearrangements involved. The relationship between recovery and the decrease of mechanical strength, however, has only recently been explored. Previous efforts of the authors were directed toward investigating the decrease of tensile flow stress of aluminum and Al-1 pet Mg during recovery2 and the effects of concurrent elastic and plastic strain on the flow-stress recovery of aluminum.3 In addition, an investigation of the effect of four different solute additions on the tensile flow-stress recovery of aluminum has been made.4 Many important metals, however, have the bee crystal structure, e.g., iron, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, columbium, tantalum, and chromium. These metals might be expected to behave differently during recovery from those with other crystal structures for two reasons. First, the previous and present investigations of aluminum and its alloys have shown that tensile flow-stress recovery is strongly affected by foreign atoms in the lattice. In the bee metals, interstitial impurities are usually present and might be expected to have various effects upon both flow behavior and recovery. For example, heterogeneous yielding might occur during prestraining. The diffusion of these interstitials can also relock dislocations during recovery so that a yield point might be obtained upon restraining (strain aging). Second, some of the bee metals (e.g., iron, molybdenum, and tungsten) undergo the familiar structure-sensitive ductility transition and exhibit brittle fracture at suitably low temperatures. It is of considerable interest to determine the effects of recovery on the transition temperature of such metals. The purpose of the present investigation was to extend our knowledge of flow-stress recovery to the bee metals and to study the effects of recovery on the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Unalloyed recrystallized are-cast molybdenum was chosen as a test material, since it exhibits a well-defined ductility transition near room temperature. As in the previous studies, the degree of recovery was measured in terms of the decrease of tensile flow stress. Prestraining and restraining were carried out at 150°C to avoid the possibility of brittle fracture. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The are-cast molybdenum sheet used in this investigation was obtained from the Climax Molybdenum Co. of Michigan. It was 0.060 in. thick by 10

Metal mining in the People's Republic of China has shown great growth during the last three decades. Over 150 new iron ore mines and nonferrous base metal mines have been opened since 1949, althouc.11 most of them of medium and small size. Concurrently, many old mines were enlarged and reconstructed. The production of iron ore has grown from less than 1.5 million tons per year in 1949 to almost 76 million tons in 1978. A corresponding increase in the total annual output in the nonferrous metal mineral industry has also been noted. It is well known that the PRC is very rich in metal mineral resources. The reserves of tungsten, tin, antimony, molybdenum and iron ore are ranked in the top three in the world. Recently, some copper porphyry ore deposits were discovered in Jianxi and Anhui provinces. Some large nickel-copper sulfide deposits were discovered and have been developed in North- West China. Huge iron ore deposits have been found in Liaoning, Hebei and Szechwan provinces. However, the bulk of the iron ores are low grade. The growing metal mineral production has met basic domestic needs since 1949; it has also proven China's big resource potential. Mining methods have also undergone development in the past 30 years. About 80% of the annual output of iron ore comes from open pits, whereas about 58% of nonferrous metal ores come from underground mines. Blasthole open stoping, sublevel caving and induced block caving are widely used in Chinese underground metal mines (table 1). This paper summarizes in detail the planning for and application of these three bulk mining methods in the nonferrous and iron ore mines in China. CLASSIFICATION OF UNDERGROUND MINING METHODS The main principle of the classification of underground mining methods in PRC is ground support in the stoping cycles of the mining blocks or stopes. Table 2 lists this classification. It is essentially the same as that given in the SME Mining Engineering Handbook. Be- cause pillar removal is a secondary mining operation, using a variety of methods, they are not included in this classification. As is the case with most classifications in science and technology, there is no precise division between the classes of mining methods. Because of the rapid development of consolidated filling techniques in the past twenty years, some types of open stoping methods use fill in order to improve the ground conditions for the secondary recovery stage. Thus, these mining methods have features of both methods using no artificial support and those using artificial support. In this classification, this type of mining method is placed in the latter category. The shrinkage stoping method has been employed extensively to mine steeply dipping narrow veins of tungsten and tin in the Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. Shrink- age stoping is placed under the class of mining methods without artificial support be- cause this reflects the nature of the Chinese experience. The function of the broken ore serving to support the footwall and/or hanging wall is limited, because the expectation is for the host rocks to remain unsupported until the stope is drawn empty. APPLICATION OF BULK MINING METHODS Bulk mining methods consist of blasthole open stoping, sublevel caving and block caving. These stoping methods have much in common, such as: bulk ore materials blasted by long holes; higher production rates of stopes or blocks and higher production efficiencies of the whole mining systems.

Flotation practice in Idaho is now about 13 years old. The advance has been steady during these 113 years. The operators have been alert to take advantage of the newest developments and they have themselves made a constant effort to improve their work. The metallurgical improvements are due to the development of (1) better equipment, (2) better reagents, and (3) better understanding and control of the process. During the eight years the writer has been in this district, there has been continuous experimentation by several companies to improve the ore dressing by flotation methods. Gravity concentration has fought hard to hold its place, and although it is true that gravity processes have been improved during this period, nevertheless, in several of the important mills of the district the few tables that managed to hang on have finally given way. On the straight-lead ores, tables and jigs are still used; and, due to better classification, their hold on this job has been strengthened. Ores of the District The ores of the district are of two general classes: (1) clean lead ores, such as those from the Bunker Hill and Hecla mines, and (2) complex lead-zinc ores. The general impression prevails that the clean lead ores, class 1, are simple and that it is easy to obtain high recoveries and good grade products. This, in a way, is a false impression; there is quite a high percentage of locked middling in these ores at 100 and' 150-mesh sizes. Improved classification preparatory to table treatment of this type of ore has made it possible to segregate effectively a high-grade middling which is further comminuted and floated. The complex lead-zinc ores of the district, of which the ore from the Morning mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is a typical example, always have presented a difficult problem. It always has been comparatively easy to make a clean lead concentrate, but it never has been possible to concentrate sphalerite with a specific gravity of 4.10 from siderite of gravity 3.88. The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45° in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 × 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) excavation is nowadays more and more considered a valuable alternative to conventional tunnelling. As a matter of fact, thanks to its advantages such as greater rate of advance and safer working conditions, the application of TBMs has increased significantly in recent years. Despite the possible excellent performance of TBMs in favourable ground conditions, the advance rates could be significantly slowed down or even obstructed in limiting geological situations. This obviously traduces in potentially longer tunnel construction times and higher costs and, therefore, in a preference for conventional method. One of the major geological hazards encountered during tunnel construction, is related to the presence of fault zones or heavily jointed and fractured rocks. The most common geotechnical problems resulting from tunnelling in these difficult conditions include the instability of the excavation face, instabilities of side-walls producing large overbreaks on the tunnel profile, excessive deformations in case of squeezing grounds, frequently changing stresses in terms of magnitude and direction, high water inflows, etc. The decisions aids for tunnelling (DAT) is a model and a computer code that can be used to evaluate the influence of the uncertainties related to both the geological/geotechnical conditions and the construction process on final tunnel construction time and costs. In this framework, the DAT is used for assessing the effects that challenging ground conditions may have on tunnelling operations in terms of costs and delays. This is done by simulating the tunnel construction considering several geological profiles. The aim of the study is comparing different excavation methods (ie drill and blast versus TBM) in changing ground conditions along the tunnel alignment ranging from good rock, to very poor and fractured formations.
