The rate of reaction of cuprite was measured in a series of sulphuric acid solutions, from which oxygen had been excluded, at various concentrations and temperatures. The overall reaction CuzO + H2S04 + Cu " + CuO + H20 + So4' may be explained quantitatively by two simultaneous rate reactions involving not only H+ but also the hydrolytic adsorption of H2SO4. The results indicate the importance of considering surface mass balance relationships associated with heterogeneous surface reactions. T EACHING has long been an important method for the recovery of metals from certain minerals. Many processes have assumed minor importance in modern practice but such operations as the recovery of uranium and present interest in high pressure-high temperature solution of sulphides' ' well illustrate the importance of leaching as a unit operation. Little quantitative information is available in a form sufficient to determine the mechanism of solution at the solid-aqueous solution interface for given systems. For this reason, it is important that fundamental studies of leaching processes be conducted so that parameters associated with such surface reactions may be understood and correlated. Cuprite was chosen for this study as a result of a recent investigation carried out at the University of Utah on ores of the Ray and Chino Mines Divs. of the Kennecott Copper Corp. These sulphide deposits contain sufficient oxidized minerals, such as cuprite, malachite, and azurite, so that recovery of metal values contained in the oxidized fraction is of primary interest. The microstructure in modified semi-solid ALTHIX (A356) alloy consists of aAl phase with Al/Si eutectic structure. Silicon phase in eutectic structure is coral like with fine fibers. The lack of good ductility in this alloy is related to the presence of silicon fibers. Accordingly many investigations have been recently conducted to modify the Si morphology through Thermomechanical processing on this alloy. In the present work an ALTHIX (A356) alloy was deformed at 450°C, 500°C and 540°C through different strain rates. Consequently the silicon fibers were broken into small particles. Large diameter bored piles with grouted bases have been adopted for the foundations of the majority of the buildings at Canary Wharf in London's Docklands, including a deep basement car park. The piles are founded in the Thanet Sand which forms part of London's aquifer where water levels are reported to be slowly rising. A special pile test has been carried out to determine the effects of both the basement excavation and a possible long term rise in the groundwater level on the performance of base grouted piles. These effects were simulated by injecting water around the pile toe and thus reducing the vertical effective stress. In this paper the test layout and procedures are described and the results are presented. The test results showed that the reduction in pile base resistance under increased water pressures was less than predicted by conventional design methods based on vertical effective stress. The end bearing resistance was found to be proportional to the mean effective stress.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced fonn of computer graphics where the images are generated based upon where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC-based) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR offers the capability of providing a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. VR has been effectively used by the military for training tank commanders and by hospitals for training surgeons. However, these applications have been limited to small numbers of highly skilled participants. The purpose of this paper is to examine VR's potential for enhancing the hazard awareness of larger numbers of individuals in a broad-based approach to mine safety training, such as new-miner, annual-refresher, and independent-contractor training.

The mean and the standard deviation were used to describe general sulfur and ash populations as well as specific populations of these variables from one coal seam. Both the mean and the standard deviation were incorporated in the exploration process to determine the number of drill cores necessary for seam evaluation and to guide the sequential drilling plan. Probability regions were computed to establish a basis for predicting probable ranges of average sulfur and ash concentrations that may be expected upon continued or future drilling. A computerized plot program was utilized to interpolate sulfur and ash concentrations between grid points. The plot program, which is essentially a moving average technique, permits a rapid evaluation of sulfur, sulfur forms, and ash spatial distributions as a drilling program progresses sequentially. This information, in the form of contour plots, can be made available to both the mining engineer and the fuel technologist in advance of mining to outline reserves, to improve selective mining, and to anticipate preparation facilities.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the 'AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation' project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error'.

Artificial intelligence techniques are ever more frequently implemented in the modern world. One of their numerous uses is supporting enterprise management. Intelligent techniques and intelligent information technology (IT) systems can be implemented in mining-related issues as well. The author of this article concentrates on supporting the process of planning mining operations by intelligent systems and techniques. The author also underlines the importance of knowledge accumulation in a mining enterprise (especially tacit knowledge) as well as its efficient storing and using. Additionally, the author provides a short description of characteristics of intelligent IT systems and indicates their capabilities in planning mining operations. She presents two solutions, namely: an advisory system which supports the process of planning preliminary works and exploitation works in hard coal mines, and a method of modeling and optimizing mining operations. Finally, the author indicates a few possible future development trends of intelligent systems - the intelligent systems of decision support.

Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

Despite what may be overwhelming evidence that natural degradation of cyanide and cyanide attenuation in hydrogeochemical processes are capable of reducing or eliminating potential water quality problems associated with heap leach facilities, the recent sharp increase in the price of gold and wide interest in the cyanidation process has focused all regulatory eyes on cyanide leaching. Regulations continue to increase, design criteria are more strict, and detoxification requirements approach or exceed the level of detectability. Current governmental regulation of mining and milling operations using cyanide varies considerably from state to state. The lack of regulatory consistency at this level is largely attributable to the current Bevill Amendment exclusion of mine wastes as potentially hazardous wastes, the undefined status of the Environmental Protection Agency's ongoing mine wast study effort, and the mining industry's reluctance to develop a consistent policy regarding state versus federal mine waste regulation.

In this paper, the molybdenite flotation tailing of cleaner-scavenger bank which has a mass of very fine particles has been taken as raw ore to be processed by flotation with/without ultrasonic. The effect of ultrasonic frequency, intensity, processing time and uploading location on molybdenite flotation efficiency is investigated by four-factor three-level orthogonal experiment, and the effect significances of these ultrasonic variables to molybdenite flotation efficiency have also been evaluated. Single-factor analysis of variance is conducted to investigate whether the effect of ultrasonic on molybdenum ore flotation efficiency is significant or not. The samples extracted from different ore species in different time have been mixed to analyze the particle size. The results show that the particle size of +38µm in concentrate obviously increases while the particle size of -25µmobviouslydecreaseswith ultrasonic, which means that ultrasonic is good for flotation due to sludge removing effect. As an alternative method of reducing the large amount of slag generated during metallurgical processes in the primary copper production, it is to use the remaining iron in the slag as feed material for the iron and steel industry. The slag is generated during copper concentrates smelting in ratios ranging from 2 to 5 ton per ton of produced copper, and it contains 42–45% of iron. However, copper, sulfur and other detrimental elements affecting iron properties need to be reduced prior to use the slag in steel production. Therefore, some laboratory experimental run has been conducted to reduce copper by slag oxidation followed by leaching and recovering the dissolved copper by SX-EW, and smelting the solid with coke to produce a metallic phase containing 98% iron and 0.9% molybdenum. In further reducing steps, copper content is lower down and a molybdenum rich iron phase is obtained. Recovery of iron from copper slags considering reduction and control of harmful elements for iron properties was studied.

Mining in Peru is mainly concentrated on metallic and polymetallic ores of gold, copper, lead, zinc, silver, tin, iron, etc. However, little has been done to develop extensive and rich non-metallic or Industrial Minerals deposits with the exception of some silica and phosphate deposits. This paper presents the characterization and metallurgical studies for the development of a feldspar deposit. These studies showed that the special characteristics of the ore, such as high porosity, high Al2O3 content, low clays content, and sized material allowed us to obtain commercial products applying relatively simple and low cost concentrating unit operations. The characterization studies showed that the feldspar products contained no quartz and about 90% of albite (NaAlSi3O8). The 14x40-mesh size fraction product analyzed 5.91% Na2O, 22.56% Al2O3, 65.73% SiO2, 0.65% K2O, 6.50% CaO, and 0.40% Fe2O3; whereas, the 40x150-mesh size fraction product analyzed 6.22% Na2O, 24.30% Al2O3, 60.80% SiO2, 0.91% K2O, 7.06% CaO, and 0.54% Fe2O3. These products could be used for manufacturing glass, ceramics, refractory, and filters in different applications. In addition, Middlings, could be used as insulation material due to its porosity (bulk density of 0.828 Kg/dm3), analyzing 4.46% Na2O, 15.7% Al2O3, 67.2% SiO2, 2.57% K2O, 3.94% CaO, and 4.24% Fe2O3. The material showed a sphericity of 0.77, a roundness of 0.68, and acid solubility of 13.3025% on only washed and 2.72% effective for clean material suitable for use in these applications. No selective accumulation of the valuable mineral was observed at any specific size fraction. However, iron and titanium bearing impurities trended to concentrate in fine fractions (minus 70 mesh -212 µm-). Metallurgical studies demonstrated that this feldspar ore required sizing at 14x40 mesh and 40x150 mesh to render commercial products. In the case of the 14x40-mesh size fraction, the process involved magnetic separation, gravity separation, and flotation for feldspar (direct flotation) using a blend of primary and condensate amines. However, the reverse flotation for mica-biotite and iron bearing minerals was also possible using petroleum sulfonate. The metallurgical process for the 40x150-mesh size fraction required magnetic separation and reverse flotation of iron and titanium bearing minerals, the feldspar being reported in the sink material. Commercial products from this feldspar deposit for glass, ceramics, refractory, and filtration; and for the manufacturing of insulation material were obtained.

The Mascot concentrator treats 1,900 tons of zinc ore per day by gravity concentration and flotation. During the year 1929 the heads averaged 2.90 per cent zinc, and the recovery was 90.15 per cent; the concentrates produced contained 60.19 per cent zinc. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment is made to M. This report outlines the experimental procedures for using a Burnett apparatus to obtain compressibility coefficients for multiphase, multicomponent fluid mixtures. The conventional Burnett method is described briefly whereby multiphase compressibility data can be obtained by first determining the compressibility factor, Z, as an isothermal function of pressure alone. Then starting at conditions of temperature and pressure where Z is known, the fluid is cooled at constant volume to some lower temperature at which the resulting pressure is measured, and a corresponding value of Z is obtained from a fundamental relationship between compressibility factors, pressures, and temperatures at constant volume. The isochoric treatment of the fluid, extended to still lower temperatures and along other isochors, eventually results in compressibility determinations for the whole two-phase system thus covered experimentally.

This paper examines the design of longwall shields, focusing on those aspects that are critical to either their successful application or contribution to failure during longwall extraction. In many instances, longwall shields are assessed and designed along lines similar to that of roadway ground support systems, namely according to typical or normal geotechnical conditions. However it will be contended that for longwall shields, this is inappropriate because unlike roadway ground support systems, longwall shields cannot be supplemented with additional or secondary support in localised areas of adverse geotechnical conditions. In other words, the longwall shield needs to be designed according to what are judged to be worst case or adverse geotechnical conditions?the outcome being that a well-designed shield will be significantly over-rated for the majority of its working life. Therefore, it will be argued that the additional capital cost of such shield design can be readily justified as a prudent riskbased outcome that is essential to minimising future business risks due to strata instability on the longwall face. Shield geometry will be discussed, including such relevant factors as leg angle, inclination of the top caving shield, canopy ratio, operating height range, and tip to face distance. These are all well-established longwall shield design considerations and, most importantly, areas whereby inadequate design can render a longwall shield as highly ineffective. The issue of tip to face distance will be considered in detail, in particular, the extent by which it is an important geotechnical design consideration, the conclusion being reached that, in fact, it is not. The critical importance of maximising set to yield ratio within practical operating limits will be justified, the wisdom of this having been subject to questioning in more recent technical literature. Overall, the aim is to provide the industry with a set of suggested guidelines for future use when designing longwall shields and, hopefully, to initiate discussion on a subject that, unlike roadway ground support design, is not well covered in its entirety in the published technical literature.

Unlike most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are—I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital—it is not those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fairness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude—his refusal to accept them as masters—that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united. Howe's Discussion of a Creep Problem I have often wished that Howe were still with us to turn his keen insight upon the problems of the use of metals at high temperatures, a field much studied but still very hazy. Indeed, 53 years ago, in a paper1 before this Institute, Howe stated a problem closely allied to some that still perplex metallurgists and engineers dealing with the high-temperature field. Howe was intrigued by a report2 from another old master, Robert Henry Thurston, on the behavior of annealed vs. cold-drawn iron wire, and in order to broaden the foundation for metallurgical generalization, Howe made experiments of his own on copper and silver. A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 in strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

The production of ferrochrome alloy from chromium bearing chromite ores is conducted at high temperature under highly reducing conditions. However, albeit completely unintended, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all high temperature process steps, with the corresponding possibility arising for the generation of small amounts of Cr(VI) species. Certain Cr(VI) species are regarded as a carcinogenic, with specifically airborne exposure to these Cr(VI) species being associated with cancer of the respiratory system. With approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore reserves located in South Africa, and annual ferrochrome production approaching almost half of total annual global output, aspects of Cr(VI) generation and control are of particular relevance and importance to the local industry, and naturally to the global industry at large. This paper seeks to examine theoretical and practical aspects associated with Cr(VI)generation (based largely on experience within the local South African industry, but considered to be generally encountered in the broader global industry context), together with mitigating measures that can be applied within the context of the production processes. From the discussions it is clear that significant improvements in various Cr(VI)-related aspects have been made by the South African ferrochrome industry. However, it is also evident that several areas of uncertainty still exist, which require further research in order to better quantify risks and enhance the efficacy of mitigating steps.
