In this paper, the old and the new commercially available reagent chemistries for the improved flotation of sulfide minerals will be summarized. The reagent classes discussed are those that meet three criteria: 1) they are being commercially used and/or large scale plant tested in North America in the last few years; 2) they are clearly different in chemical structure than commonly used commercial reagents of the last few decades and are not simply mixtures of existing reagents and/or simple changes in cation, alkyl group size, etc. and 3) the structural formulae are clearly specified in the public literature.

The light microscopic study of the physical structures of coal and associated mineral matter is an important technique in providing information on the characterisitics and possible behaviour of coals in industrial processes. However the ultrafine nature of coal and mineral particles together with the limits of resolution of the light microscope restrict such studies. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)with its better resolution and higher magnifications is the means by which further information on coal properties can be obtained. An associated energy dispersive X-ray specrometry (EDS) method allows non-destructive in-situ chemical analyses to be carried out at the same time.

Pre-splitting is now widely used to minimize overbreak and to protect final surface rock excavation profiles in large scale civil construction projects, open pit mining and quarrying. Jointing has been shown to affect the success of pre-splitting and the smoothness and integrity of the resulting rock face. Many facets of jointing have been investigated in detail, including the inclination of joints with respect to the desired pre-split plane, the effects of various filling materials, etc. However, the effects of joint frequency and spatial positioning has been paid little attention. The paper addresses this issue.

The PC computer program PCVENT, version 3.3, for the ventilation network analysis now incorporates a real-time fire simulator. Position of the fire or a source of contamination and the character of the event are input from the keyboard. There are several options of type of fire: heat only, contaminant only, or both with a constant burning rate or with oxygen as the only limiting factor. Airway resistances or fan characteristics can be modified during a fire simulation. This allows testing of various fire suppression strategies. Program application in the analysis of a real mine fire is presented.

The presence of arsenic in solutions which result from the processing of many sulphide minerals leads to a need to understand its speciation in aqueous systems and the reactions of those various species. This paper deals in particular with the precipitation of arsenic from aqueous solution in the form of insoluble inorganic compounds in order to remove arsenic from various hydrometallurgical process streams. The solubility and stability of the precipitates is examined. It has been found that many of the arsenic compounds presently used are more soluble than previously accepted and unstable in disposal sites such as tailings ponds.

"While mines generally focus on achieving operational efficiency, creating shared value for all stakeholders is also a management goal. This includes taking a holistic view of their supply chains and increasing local participation. This paper examines the role of supply chain management in mine management; in particular the effect of a strong local supply chain on regional economic impacts. Using input-output analysis, the impact of a local supply chain on a mining sector’s regional economic impact is examined by increasing local sourcing (increasing local purchase percentage -- LPP) for 10 key commodities. An approach, based on multipliers and excess local capacity is used to identify key commodities. The impacts examined are sales, employment, labor income, and value added. The work is illustrated with stone mining and quarrying in Missouri. Ten percent increases in LPP of the key commodities, in this example, result in $4.1 million additional impact on the Missouri economy. This work can provide insight on how to better create shared value for all stakeholders. INTRODUCTION Little research has been published on improving mine supply chain management (SCM) to enhance regional economic impacts. Although some extensive academic research has explored the importance of an industries’ supply chain, not much is known about how a locally-based supply chain increases shared value in the resource sector. Across industries, traditional SCM is getting more and more complex. This is true of the mining sector as well. However, this increased sophistication is not directed towards increasing shared value for all stakeholders, particularly, the local communities. Further research is required to develop new SCM strategies that enhance local participation. One major point of difference between this work and traditional supply chain management is the inclusion of stakeholders’ shared value as a goal in SCM. Creating shared value has become a business goal in recent years (Porter and Kramer, 2011). The authors use input-output analysis (Leeuw, 2012) to evaluate the regional economic impacts of supply chain decisions, which is not part of traditional SCM. Although input-output analysis has been applied to SCM for decades, most of the research uses input-output analysis as a tool to advance an industries’ own operational efficiency (Accenture, 2014)."

It is a striking fact in the domestic oil statistics of 1926 that with an increase in production of 13,000,000 bbl., there was nevertheless a lowering of both crude and gasoline stocks. It was the first reduction in the last eight years. In 1918, the last year of the war, stocks of crude and refined products were lowered 16,000,000 bbl., but in the following seven years stocks were increased 350,000,000 bbl., due largely to the phenomenal crop of major pools discovered in 1923. The big pools of that year coming as they did through some curious coincidence unprecedented in the oil industry, not only piled up a sudden increase of stocks at a time of large imports but they continued to add their quota to an increase of storage until 1926. With an increase in crude production, according to the Oil and Gas Journal, from 760,000,000 bbl. in 1925 to 773,000,000 bbl. in 1926, and an increase in cracking facilities of about 30 per cent., there was a draft on storage of 22,300,000 bbl. of crude and 1,000,000 bbl. of refined. Crude and refined changed from a stock surplus of 29,130,000 bbl. in 1925, to a deficit of 23,300,000 bbl. in 1926, or a differential total of 52,430,000 bbl. With a stock reserve of 541,700,000 bbl. of crude and refined oil in 1925, the amount drawn from storage was not large in percentage but it marked an important contrast with previous years. It meant a year of stability in prices and a sound condition in the industry. The indicated domestic demand increased from 695,120,000 in 1925 to 743,360,000 in 1926, (7 per cent.), 1 per cent. of which was due to California fires. Most of the gain in consumption was due to the increased demand for gasoline. There was little comparative change in the combined imports of crude and refined oil. There was an increase in exports of 17,200,000 bbl. (1.5 per cent). A petroleum balance sheet for 1926 and a comparativl sheet for the last two years, production in the United States by major districts and pools, and a list of imports are given in Tables 1 to 5, inclusive.

The rheological properties of five kaolins, isostatically pressurized at 4 x10 Pa for 10 min in the presence/absence of water, was determined. Under dry conditions, measured viscosity values either decreased or remained the same. After treatment under wet conditions, measured viscosity values were 30-60% higher at high shear and 50-60% higher at low shear. These results correlate with variations in nanomorphology and structural order. Dry compaction degraded kaolinite crystals but wet-pressing appeared to cause an increase in the proportion of euhedral crystallites and a decrease in deformed crystals. Dry compaction decreased the low-defect phase proportion (ldp), but in contrast, the ldp in wet-treated kaolins remained constant or increased. Results show that hydrous pressure treatment produces a change in viscosity of kaolin suspensions, yielding the potential for improving paper coating performance, whereas anhydrous pressure treatment decreased or maintained the viscosity.

The Green Parrot and Reward stratabound silver-lead (copper-zinc) deposits are located in the eastern part of the Arunta Block. At Green Parrot, mineralisation is contained within a north-south striking lode horizon comprised of elongate lenses of massive garnet or calcsilicate-carbonate "lode rocks" with intercalated sericite-biotite schist and laminated biotite-feldspar schist. The "lode rocks" are increasingly calcareous to the west. The mineralisation is broadly zoned with an increase in lead content and decreases in copper and silver contents from east to west. The principal sulphide minerals are galena, sphalerite and bornite. The Reward deposit lies adjacent to a lens of massive garnet "lode rock" which is contained within garnetiferous sericite-quartz schist. Primary mineralisation consists of galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite. Both deposits are associated with a substantial thickening of the lode horizon which is narrow and discontinuous along strike from the Green Parrot and Reward deposits.

The Zinc Corporation of South Africa Ltd. (Zincor) operates an integrated roast ? leach ? electrowinning circuit. The efficient removal and control of iron forms an integral part of the process. Zincor developed its own iron removal process (Zincor Process), which was recently shown to be unique with some similarities to the para-goethite iron removal process. Newly developed operating parameters for iron removal are in the process of being implemented. These include a change in the pH-profile and operating temperature, the recycling of seed material and the utilisation of an alternative neutralising agent to aid iron removal. Some of these actions, together with the implementation of a pre-neutralisation step, new filtration equipment and control systems in Zincor?s Residue Treatment Plant have significantly reduced zinc losses associated with iron in calcine and the iron residue produced. This enabled Zincor to take a step closer to world-class zinc recovery levels of around 96% for a similar type of operation.

The mining industry internationally seems on the verge of a major underground support revolution as suppliers, mines, consultants and researchers develop, test and use thin support (structural) membranes (or superskins as they are commonly called) mainly as a replacement for screen/wire mesh. Thick membrane support in the form of shotcrete (sprayed concrete) has been used since the 1950s in underground mines. Shotcrete, in mines, is generally applied at a thickness between 25 and 100 mm depending on the need. Thin membranes are however applied at a typical thickness between 2 and 6 mm. Certain thin membranes have been available for several years (Tannant et al, 1999), but the intense interest in such supports has only grown in the last few years. The interest lies mainly in the potential to safely reduce the mining cycle time and hence improve productivity. There is however considerable confusion concerning such supports, and this paper attempts to clarify certain aspects and dispel certain misconceptions and myths about thin support membranes.

At the Fort Knox Mine, Fairbanks, Alaska, carbon fines are generated during stripping, acid washing and kiln regeneration operations. Because of their gold value, carbon fines are collected by a filter press. Samples of the carbon fines show that they consist of 20% to 30% carbon, 70% to 80% grit and 0.17 to 0.68 g/kg (5.0-19.9 oz/st) gold. About 80% of the gold values in the carbon fines used in this study are in the form of recrystallized free gold grains, with the balance being the adsorbed gold on the carbon. High recoveries of gold and carbon were obtained from the fines in laboratory tests using froth flotation, with a high rejection of the grit. More than 95% of gold and 90% of carbon can be recovered by three stages of gold flotation followed by two stages of carbon flotation. Key words: Gold recovery, Activated carbon, Flotation

Crude petroleum, the only commercially exploited mineral resource in Cameroon, continued to dominate developments in the mineral industry sector. International mining concerns have expressed interest in developing Cameroon's bauxite and iron and steel potentials. Domestically, the mineral industry focused on production of fertilisers for agricultural development, infrastructure construction, and hydrocarbon development, through the nearly self-sufficient production of fertilizer materials, cement, and crude oil. The mineral sector contributed 5.6% to the estimated 1981 gross domestic product (GDP) of $6.5 billion.2 Petroleum exports accounted for approximately 4.5% of the 1981 GDP and exceeded coffee and cocoa exports for the second consecutive year. The trade gap widened during the fiscal year ending on July 80, 1981, owing to a 21% increase in exports and a 25% increase in imports. Offsetting these balance-of-payments difficulties, typical of developing countries' early economic stages, were increases in foreign exchange reserves to $71 trillion by May 1983.

"The copper industry has had a long and interesting history associated with leaching, involving vat, dump, heap, and in situ methods. The Bureau of Mines has also had an interest in copper leaching and has researched the techniques of solution recovery, particularly concentrating on in situ methods. In situ mining is a relatively low cost method and has been proven commercially successful by nine operations. It has been most commonly used for final recovery in old workings at the conclusion of conventional mining operations.This report brings together information about 10 commercial in situ operations as well as 14 experimental projects. These 24 sites comprise most of the in situ copper mining activities that have taken place in the United States. Background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, and recovery and processing are provided for each operation. Production data and tables summarizing the engineering statistics for each operation and an extensive in situ mining bibliography are included. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to summarize the documented in situ copper leach mining activities that have taken place in the United States. It was prepared to provide a source of engineering and operating data upon which future in situ copper mining activities can be based. Twenty-four different sites are discussed. These are all of the sites that are known to the authors from the extensive in situ copper leach mining bibliography developed at the Bureau's Twin Cities (MN) Research Center (Appendix B).In situ copper leach mining activities fall into the following categories:1. Commercial operations with ore body preparation.2. Commercial operations in old mine workings.3. Experimental programs.Ore body preparation includes such activities as blasting, block caving, and hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracing) specifically to fragment the ore body. Operations in old mine workings include those done in open pits, worked out block caved areas, and backfilled stopes where leaching is done as an afterthought to conventional mining. Experimental programs are small-scale tests of the feasibility of a commercial operation. Some of these programs did not progress to the point where leach solutions were applied to the ore.Each operation (locations shown in figure 1) will be discussed in terms of background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, recovery and processing, and engineering and production data. Information was collected from published reports, communications with company personnel, and site visits."

Because of increased pressure from Federal & State Regulatory Agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Pressure to minimize costs of waste treatment equipment and land usage makes development of a treatment process incorporating these desires mandatory. "Standard" methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem. Also, when standard lime treatment is used, the settling characteristic of the precipitated solids is normally slow. In some instances, the necessity of added dissolved solids removal, (such as iron, needing aeration) add to the problem of concentrating neutralized solids. In a paper published in the September 1970 issue of "Coal Age," *the results of extensive test work by personnel of the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Pa., were reported. This paper dealt specifically with development of a flow sheet to treat acid mine drainage (hereafter referred to as AMD) from coal mine operations. Following a detailed assessment of concen trator performance at Broken Hill South Limited which was reported in a previous paper, the fine grinding section was changed from a parallel arrangement of the two grinding circuits to a series arrangement, and the concentrator per- formance re-assessed. The change to series grinding had virtually no effect on the actual or potential capacity of the circuit to make a final product with 80% passing 100 mesh. However, the fresh flotation feed contained significantly less +150 mesh lead and +65 mesh zinc (material which was shown to float poorly), without an increase in the quantity of poor-floating ultra-fine lead and zinc. From the size-by-size flotation recovery data, it was shown that overall recoveries of both lead and zinc were approximately 1% higher than they would have been without this change in size distribution and it was concluded that this was a direct result of the change in grind- ing procedure.

THE wide scope of the causes and effects of ground movement and their interrelation to various kinds of mining and geological conditions are not always understood. Minimizing of roof movement by selection of suitable mining methods is closely allied to the problem of obtaining maximum safety in mining, but there are other questions involved: for example, mechanical developments which increase the production of ore and other minerals per shift or unit of labor but which, though highly ingenious, may increase hazards. More- over, the newer mobile loaders need much space for operation with longer protecting roof spans. Another problem emphasized by mechanization is the incompleteness of extraction of mineral, as there is no governmental requirement (except for limited leases on the public domain) in this country, as in European countries, and loss of coal in pillars is accepted by mine operators rather than risking the loss of an ex- pensive loading machine from a heavy roof fall. The extent to which losses of coal in mining are now being incurred is conjectural, for it has been fifteen years since there has been a comprehensive survey. In that study a loss of slightly over one-third of the coal in both anthracite and bituminous mining was indicated.

Introduction The Fortitude deposit is located in Nevada's Battle Mountain mining district in the central Great Basin region of the Basin and Range province of the western US. The deposit is at Copper Canyon in the southernmost portion of the district, about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain (Fig. 1). Mining activity in the district began in 1866 (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). Base and precious metals were mined by underground methods intermittently until 1955. Placer gold was first discovered at Copper Canyon in 1912. Moderate scale dredging of alluvial gravel at the mouth of Copper Canyon was conducted by the Natomas Co. from 1944 to 1955 (Johnson, 1973). In 1967, Duval Corp. began large scale open-pit copper mining. (Sayers, Tippett, and Fields, 1968). Copper prices decreased and precious metals prices increased in the mid-1970s so Duval's exploration efforts at Copper Canyon shifted to precious metals. These exploration efforts resulted in the discovery of the Tomboy-Minnie deposits and shortly afterward, the Northeast Extension deposit at Copper Canyon (Blake, Wotruba, and Theodore, 1984; Fig. 2). The Fortitude deposit was discovered in late 1980, after Duval had proceeded with precious metals production at Copper Canyon. Converting the existing plant facilities at Copper Canyon to a precious metals recovery system was completed in 1978 (Jackson, 1982). Production from the Tomboy-Minnie deposits began in early 1979. Precious metals production moved to the Northeast Extension deposit in 1982. In late 1984, after three years of preproduction stripping and mining of the Upper Fortitude ore zone, production from the higher grade Lower Fortitude ore zone began. Currently, Battle Mountain Gold Co. operates the Fortitude deposit. Production from the Battle Mountain mining district before 1967 included 4.6 t (150,000 oz) of gold, 65.3 t (2.1 million oz) of silver, 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of copper, 4.5 kt (5,000 st) of lead, and 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of zinc (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). At the time of Duval's 1967 start-up, ore reserves at Copper Canyon included 12.6 Mt (14 million st) in the East ore body and another 3.6 Mt (4 million st) in the West ore body. Both had average grades of 0.79% copper, 16.1 g/t (0.47 oz per st) silver and 0.86 g/t (0.025 oz per st) gold (Blake et al., 1984). The Tomboy-Minnie deposits collectively contained 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st) of ore grading 3.09 g/t (0.09 oz per st) gold and 9.6 g/t (0.28 oz per st) silver. The Northeast Extension reserves were identified as 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of ore with an average grade of 2.9 g/t (0.085 oz per st) gold and 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) silver. Initial total reserve estimates for the Fortitude deposit were 14.5 Mt (16 million st) grading 5.14 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold and 29.8 g/t (0.87 oz per st) silver (Jackson, 1982). Therefore, before large scale mining, the Copper Canyon area contained a minimum of 102.6 t (3.3 million oz) of gold and 541 t (17.4 million oz) of silver as mineable reserves. The Fortitude deposit reserves as of Jan. 1, 1985 were 10.6 Mt (11 million st) grading at 5.28 g/t (0.154 oz per st) gold and 28.5 g/t (0.83 oz per st) silver. Stone coal is a unique vanadium-bearing resource in China. Many techniques, such as salt roasting-water leaching, blank roasting-acid leaching, direct acid leaching etc. have been developed for vanadium extraction from stone coal. The vanadium leaching rate can reach 74.9% for stone coal from Jiangxi, but only about 27% of vanadium is leached for Hubei ore by applying salt roasting-water leaching technique. This paper investigats the vanadium occurrence in stone coal by microscope observation and electron probe, and compares the minerals components of stone coal from Jiangxi and Hubei. Although most vanadium exist as an isomorphism by replacing Al(III) from dioctahedral structure in mica group minerals in stone coal from two regions, the free vanadium is remarkably abundant in Jiangxi stone coal than in Hubei stone coal, which results the fact that vandium is relatively readily extracted from former. Moreover, the content of calcite in Hubei stone coal is much higher than that in Jiangxi stone coal. Calcium can react with V2O5 to form water insoluble calcium vanadates during roasting and this may be the reasone why the water leaching rate of vanadium is low for Hubei ore. Acid leaching is more beneficial to the vanadium leaching but other extra methods, such as adding aid-leaching agent and/or increasing acid concentration is need for the ore where vanadium is embeded firmly. This study can effectively guide the selection of vanadium extraction techniques for stone coal from different regions.
