Rio Algom Limited are currently undergoing a major expansion of their mining operations in the Elliot Lake area. To date this has involved the increase of output at the Quirke Mine from 4080 to 6350 tonnes per mill day (4500 to 7000 tons), the rehabilitation of the Panel Mine to produce at the rate of 2990 tonnes per mill day (3300 tons) by 1980, and the rehabilitation of the Stanleigh Mine to produce 4540 tonnes per mill day (5000 tons) by 1984. In addition, the planning for the rehabilitation of the Milliken Mine to produce 4990 tonnes per mill day (5500 tons) is now underway. This major expansion is taking place at a time of increasing awareness of occupational health matters and has involved very high capital expenditures and detailed planning related to the ventilation system to endeavour the provision of an acceptable environment. The paper discusses the ventilation systems, established and proposed, and relates them to historical and current data on mine air contaminants.

This paper presents the results of a complete reservoir studv designed to determine a sound economic program for the conservation of oil and gas in the Pickton field, Hopkins County, Texas. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime with all indications of the study being that production is predominately by dissolved-gas drive. Calculations of the total ultimate recovery to be expected under primary operations indicated only 16.7 per cent of the oil originally in place would be recovered. This unusually low recovery is due to the type of drive operating and the extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and shrinkage. Results are presented for six plans of returning gas to the reservoir, evaluated to determine (1) comparative recoveries and economics of (a) returning gas at a constant rate by supplementing Pickton gas with extraneous gas during the early portion of the operation, and (b) conventional gas-return operations without using extraneous gas, and (2) the optimum size of compressor plant for each type of pressure maintenance. The over-all economic program considers, for either type pressure maintenance operation. a gasoline plant to process the unusually rich casinghead gas. Since pressure maintenance will disturb equities, pooling of royalties is in the case of Pickton a prerequisite to conservation of oil by this type of operation, both from an economic and legal standpoint. In the event pooling of royalties cannot be achieved, the study considers a gasoline plant to operate under a modified primary production operation which will make the conservation of gas possible. INTRODUCTION The Pickton field, located in Hopkins County, Texas. was discovered in November, 1944. by the completion of Humble's C. D. Nichols 1, in the Bacon lime of the Lower Glen Rose formation, through perforations from 7,888 to 7.896 feet. The well initially produced 50.2 API gravity oil with a gas-oil ratio of 1,350 cubic feet per barrel. Subsurface samples of the reservoir fluid obtained soon after completion of the discovery well showed that the Pickton crude is unique in that it has an extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and is subject to very severe shrinkage. Calculations of the future behavior of the Pickton reservoir indicated that ultimate oil recovery by primary operations would be 3,269,000 barrels, representing only 16.7 per cent of the oil in place (19,577,000 stock-tank barrels), and that recovery could be substantially increased by returning the produced gas. The cumulative production of 1,382,694 barrels on November 1: 1947, amounted to 42.3 per cent of the estimated ultimate oil recovery from primary operations. The purpose of this study is to determine and evaluate the optimum program for conservation of oil and gas in the Pick-ton field, including the desirability of conducting gas-return operations and of installing a gasoline plant. LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION Pickton Field, The Pickton field, as shown in Fig. 1, is located in southwest Hopkins County, Texas, 12.5 miles southwest of the New Hope field, 2.7 miles northeast of the Coke field, 16 miles southwest of Sulphur Springs, and 8 miles northwest of Winnsboro, Texas.

The Bureau of Mines instrumented two similarly backfilled stopes--one filled in the normal manner and the other with the fill densified using vibratory compactors--to evaluate the effect of fill compaction on subsequent vein-wall closure proposed as a adjunct process for strengthening cemented fill. Hydraulic pressure cells to monitor pressures within the fill and mechanical closure devices to measure vein-wall movement and the procedure for their installation are described. The field compaction work was generally performed manually by utilizing small commercial concrete vibrators. A prototype immersible vibrator using slusher cables to propel the vibrator in the stope was used on several lifts of fill. Although compaction efforts were less effective than anticipated in increasing the final density of fill, analysis of the field data does indicate somewhat improved strain characteristics and an increased pressure buildup for the densified fill. The effects of a prolonged period of inactivity and of rock burst occurrences in the immediate area are also reflected in plots of strain and pressure within the two instrumented stopes.

"The use of the up-to date light alloys and their development are in the sharp ascent especially in transportation industry. In the last years the use of the magnesium alloys for the various purposes was strongly increased. The aim of present research was to study the influence of solidification rate on hot workability and on obtained mechanical properties of AM60 magnesium alloy. The study was also focused on possibility to omit prior homogenisation process which would result in cost reduction. The solidification of gravity cast alloy has been investigated with various methods of the thermal analysis: in situ simple thermal analysis and simultaneous thermal analysis. In order to reveal optimal hot working conditions the deformation behaviour was studied in the temperature range 200-450°C and strain rates between 0.001-lOs-1. Mechanical properties have been studied with tensile and impact toughness testing.IntroductionIn recent years, the increased demand for magnesium alloys has been mainly driven by the need of automotive and transportation industry to reduce the weight, as this is the most important parameter to reduce the energy consumption. Beside their very low weight in comparison to other metals, the magnesium alloys are characterized by good machinability, corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties, and can thus compete with aluminium alloys and for some applications even with steels. Due their decreased workabilty they are typically used as cast alloys, but in recent years also the research of their wrought state has become more extensive [1-7]. Decreased hot workability of magnesium alloys originates from their hexagonal close-packed structure. One of the most popular magnesium alloys with great potential for many applications is AM60 (MgA16Mn), which is predominately used for casting. But its application could be increased if the mechanical properties, could be improved. This can be done by hot working. Namely it is well known that wrought microstructure is characterized by better mechanical properties in comparison to as-cast state. On the other hand due to its low hot workability the homogenization process is required prior hot deformation, which results in increased production costs. Thus the aim of the present research was to study the influence of solidification rate on hot workability of AM60 alloy in order to improve its mechanical properties and to check the possibility of producing near-net-shape casting products omitting homogenisation process by employing small additional deformations after casting. Within the framework of this research the solidification of gravity cast AM60 alloy has been investigated with various methods of the thermal analysis."

ThE nickel and cobalt base superalloys employed in gas turbine engines under some conditions' oxidize at an accelerated rate when exposed at elevated temperatures to atmospheres containing minor quantities of sea salt. It is generally agreed by investigators in the field that the major steps comprising this phenomena of accelerated oxidation, also called hot corrosion or more commonly, sulfidation, are a) a slag composed primarily of Na2S04 is formed on turbine components, b) the protective oxide scale is rendered ineffectual, c) the slag reacts with. the substrate to form metal sulfides, and d) the substrate is rapidly oxidized. Sodium sulfate, a minor constituent of sea salt, is formed within the gas turbine engine from the reactions between NaC1, the major constituent of sea salt, and the oxides of sulfur.' Depending upon concentration, engine compression ratio, and temperature, the Na2S04 will be present in the gaseous or condensed state. It has been determined that in order for sulfi-dation to occur the Na2S04 must be present in the condensed state.' Although a number of sulfidation mechanisms have been postulated, there is no consistent explanation of oxide scale breakdown and subsequent catastrophic oxidation. Some investigators believe that after oxide scale breakdown, the Na2SO4 reacts with the substrate to form lower-valent sulfur compounds. The accelerated rate of oxidation is due to oxidation of a nickel-sulfide phase." Other investigators believe that sulfur from the fused salt reacts with chromium in the alloy to form chromium-rich sulfides; thereby depleting the alloy of an element which imparts oxidation resistance.3,4 This publication will demonstrate that the accelerated rate of oxidation associated with sul-fidation is due to interactions between Na20, a con-stituent of NazSO.,, ancl the substrate. The aim of this study was to separate and determine the effect of compounds of sulfur and sodium on the oxidation kinetics of various nickel-base superalloys, in order to elucidate the sulfidation mechanism. The work reported herein is sponsored in part by the Naval Ship and Development Center-Investigation of EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The nickel base alloys B-1900, U-700, and Waspaloy were chosen for this study. The nominal compositions are presented in Table I. The specimens, approximately 1 in. by 1 in. by 0.060 in. received in the "as cast" condition were polished with 600 grit emery, washed, and rinsed with acetone immediately prior to oxidation experiments. Sulfida-tion attack was duplicated in the laboratory by apply-ing a saturated aqueous solution of Na2S04 onto the al loy substrate and subsequently exposing the specimens in oxygen at elevated temperature. The method of Na2S04 application is described elsewhere in detail.6 In another set of experiments the affected substrate microstructure associated with sulfidation was reproduced free of the normal oxide scale, by reacting and diffusing elemental sulfur into the alloy. The experimental procedure is also described elsewhere in detail. All oxidation studies were performed using an Ainsworth thermobalance type RV-AU-1, which is readable to 0.01 mg and is reproducible to ±0.03 mg. Laboratory tests showed that at elevated temperatures a reaction takes place between all metal hydroxides and clay muds, which results in a thickening or solidifying of the mud, the extent of which depends on the nature of the ingredients. Calcium hydroxide gave the strongest solidification whereas barium hydroxide only caused a mild thickening, indicating that the use of barium hydroxide muds instead of lime muds would be a good way of preventing high-temperature solidification. It was found possible to prepare barium mud in the laboratory with caustic soda and a thinner in the same manner as lime muds, and these barium muds had the same or better toleration of high solids content, resistance to salt contamination, and low gel strengths as the corresponding lime muds. Three field trials have been made with barium mud. The principal difficulty encountered was in determining the correct proportions of the tourly treatments required to maintain low gel strengths. A satisfactory systern was finally developed, and low gels were maintained throughout the third test. The wells on which the trials were made were not carried deep enough to test the resistance to solidification adequately, but oven tests at 350°F were made periodically and no tendency to solidification was noted except immediately after severe cernent contamination had introduced excessive amounts of calcium into the system. Although barium hydroxide costs considerably more than lime, the total mud costs were as low, and on the last well significantly lower, than the average cost of lime mud wells drilled in the vicinity. INTRODUCTION The advantages of repressing dispersion and hydra-tion of clay cuttings carried in the mud, particularly when drilling through thick clay formations, are well recognized. This repression is generally achieved by the use of lime, and lime muds have in consequence the desirable characteristics of high toleration of solids, low thixotropy, and good resistance to contamination. They have, however, the disadvantage of high-temperature solidification. This phenomenon has been described in detail by Gray et al, who have shown that it is the result of a chemical reaction between the hydroxides and the clay minerals. The work described in this paper was undertaken to find a substitute for lime which would not cause this solidification. LABORATORY EXPERlMENTS The principal positive requirement for a substitute for lime is that it should repress the hydration and dispersion of clay. It is well known that monovalent cations promote hydration while polyvalent cations repress it. Therefore, a few representative polyvalent salts and hydroxides were tested to determine whether they could be used as substitutes for lime. Their efficiency at repressing hydration and dispersion was measured by means of the clay-volume test. It has been shown elsewhere' that this test is a good measure of degree of dispersion of clay in suspension and that hydration accompanies and correlates with dispersion, so that measuring one measures the other. The test is made by centrifuging a 1:100 mixture of mud and 1-N NaCl and observing the volume of sediment—the greater the volume, the greater the dispersion. During the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the Western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton samples from five manganese properties near Golconda, Nev. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration. The Tom Major property, one of those sampled, is situated 12-1/2 miles south of Golconda, Humboldt County, Nev. The deposit is described as a bed about 5 feet thick in a thinly bedded shale and dolomite formation. The sample tested was obtained from the manganese bed, but the examining engineer reported: "The mining of an appreciable tonnage at reasonable cost would perhaps cut in half the grade represented by the sample."

The Weedy Lake, Tower Lake, and Wedge Lake gold deposits illustrate contrasting styles and different ages of mineralization within the same district. The discovery of these deposits was the result of systematic exploration of gold occurrences noted during research of assessment files. The Weedy Lake and Tower Lake depo its reflect a late-stage gold mineralizing event. The e deposits developed along the same major structural break, and also display simi lar mineralogy and alteration patterns. Mineralization is developed in all the lithologies present. The Wedge Lake property, while having occurrences similar to the Weedy and Tower deposits. has the more important Twin Zone which best fits a volcanogenic exhalative model. The Twin Zone has a complex structural history without a recognizable alteration halo. The setting may be proximal to a hydrothermal vent. Mineralization is hosted within a mixed ulphide/oxide/silicate facies iron formation breccia. and the gold is intimately associated with arsenopyrite. The origin and age of the brecciation is key to understanding the mineralizing event. Traditional prospecting procedures in conjunction with conventional B-horizon soil geochemistry were instrumental in the Twin Zone and Weedy lake disco,•eries. Tower Lake was a prospecting discovery partially defined by previous drill programs. This deposit was also identified by B-horizon oil sampling.

The basic part of solar water heaters is the collector and the main functional part of the collector is the absorber layer. In this work, a commercial locally available black painting (PACEN code 10382 colour 890), used for swimming pools solar heating, was modified by adding nano-graphite dispersion. The effect of nano-graphite particles percentage on the spectral absorbance of the material was examined on samples containing two values of 1.5 and 2.5% nano-graphite particles by weight. Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was also used to identify the functional groups in the developed material. A simple experimental setup was designed to evaluate the performance of the developed nanodispersed selective coating polymeric based material, by measuring the increase in temperature of circulating water. It was shown that adding 1.5–2.5% nano-graphite particles to a polymer based black coating causes an increase in the optical absorptance, and an increase in the circulating water temperature.

Based on the analysis of properties of vanadium tailing (VT), the surface modification study was carried out as a polymer filler. The modification effects of the three kinds of coupling agents on VT and the mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) composites with a modified vanadium tailing (MVT) were compared to determine the suitable surface modification agent and modification processes for VT. The results show that the best one is aluminate coupling agent DL-411. When the content is 1.2 wt% and the temperature was 100 °C, the activity index of modified vanadium tailing (MVT) is 95.53%. FTIR analysis shows that DL-411 has the strongest binding ability on VT. XRD analysis shows that VT has a heterogeneous nucleation on PP to induced b form formation, and DL-411 could enhance this nucleation. So the composites has higher strength and better toughness. When the content of MVT is 10 phr, the tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus of the composites are 47.51 MPa, 38.43 kJ/m2, 59.57 and 1654.36 MPa, respectively.

It was in the 1980s that USBM published one of the first regulations to protect constructions from the effects of vibrations caused by mine blasts. Several countries have made their own regulations or recommendations since then with vibration limits that are often lower. However, on many sites, operators choose vibration limits that are lower than those of the existing standards, in order to limit the number of complaints received. The real question is how can we know what level of vibration is susceptible to create or worsen an existing crack in a construction. MCM, to the north of Quebec, is working a deposit on the periphery of the town of Malartic. Within the scope of its environmental monitoring programme, together with the joint monitoring committee, MCM has equipped four sample houses for over 18 months, in order to learn if there is a relationship between the evolution of damage to existing constructions and the seismic levels of vibrations created by mine blasts. The publication presents the results of this unique study that has analyzed millions of measurements (seismic, extensometric, and temperature) to define what relationship exists between the levels of vibration and the movement of cracks. Some surprising results versus some published previously (see ref) might change our perception of the subject.

For improvement in the productivity of tall building projects, table formwork is one of the main methods that have been adopted for slab formwork. Because the table formwork method is an equipment-oriented construction method, the type of lifting equipment and method of operation considerably affects the productivity and cost of the table formwork. It is also important to make an equipment input plan for completing the table formwork within the time given, according to the structural construction cycle. For performing the table formwork, a tower crane or an independent lifting system, and shifting trolleys, are required. However, if an inefficient equipment input plan is made, exorbitant cost may be incurred. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the productivity of a table formwork, considering the type and number of lifting equipment and the number of trolleys inputted, and to suggest quantitative data for making a cost-efficient equipment input plan within the construction duration given. It is expected that the results of this research will be utilized as a basis for cost-efficient equipment input planning.

Yield point measurements were made on polycrys-talline specimens of a iron deformed various amounts at 770, 1950, or 273°K, aged, and redeformed at 77: 195°, or 273°K. When the prestrain temperature is lower than that subsequent to aging, the yield point return is suppressed relative to specimens deformed at the same temperature both before and after aging. The degree of suppression is a function of both the magnitude of prestrain at the lower temperature and the difference between the deformation temperatures before and after aging. It is proposed that the suppression is caused by the formation of dislocation barriers during the initial low-temperature deformation. The aging kinetics of polycrystalline a-iron wires deformed at 77o or 303oK were studied at 44 " and 64 "C using internal friction measurements. No change was noted as a result of the difference in prestrain temperature. IN an earlier investigation1 it was observed that the return of the yield point was suppressed when a poly-crystalline specimen of a iron was plastically deformed at 77oK, aged at room temperature, and subsequently tested at room temperature. In order to investigate this observation, a research program was undertaken to measure the effect of prestrain temperature on the strain aging of a iron.' According to Thomas and Leak,3 return of the yield point and internal friction are similar measures of strain aging since both are dependent on solute atoms leaving the solid solution. The decrease in internal friction as a function of aging time is indicative of the removal of solute atoms from the solution, while the return of the yield point as a function of aging time gives the rate of arrival of solute atoms at the dislocations. According to Cottrell and Bilby,4 the solute atoms create an "atmosphere" which locks the dislocations and causes a return of the yield point upon restraining. In this experiment, both methods of measuring strain aging were employed in order to have two independent measurements of the strain aging phenomenon. In a previous study,5 the strain aging kinetics of a similar lot of a iron were measured for specimens which were prestrained and tested at the same temperature over the range of 77" to 273°K. Although some differences were found in the correlation of the two methods employed for measuring strain aging, the kinetics of strain aging were unaffected by the change of prestrain and test temperature. In another study,6 dislocation line tension and the density of the solute atmosphere were found to contribute to the return of the yield point when ingot iron specimens were prestrained at 303°K and tested at a lower temperature, namely 77°K. This paper is concerned with changes in strain aging kinetics produced by pre-straining at 77" to 303°K and testing at either the prestrain temperature or at higher temperatures up to 273°K. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The polycrystalline a iron specimens used in both the tensile and internal friction tests were 0.033-in. diam ingot iron wires, wet hydrogen treated and re-carburized. A more detailed procedure for processing a 3/16 in. ingot iron rod (nominal wt. pet composition: Fe - 0.013; C - 0.0125; Mn - 0.023; Si -0.005; P - 0.0023; S - 0.11; Cu - 0.004 N) to 0.033 in. diam specimens containing approximately 0.020 wt pet C and no detectable nitrogen with a grain diameter of 0.033 to 0.040 mm is given elsewhere.5 Immediately prior to testing, specimens were solution treated for 15 min at 700o ± 2°C in a static vacuum of less than 50 ?. of Hg and rapidly quenched into an ice-water bath while still enclosed in a 3 mm quartz vial. THE current emphasis in preparing boron fibers by reduction of gaseous boron compounds on a resistively heated metal wire substrate has renewed interest in the borides of those metals which have relatively high melting points and are available as fine wires. A knowledge of the structures and properties of the borides, which are formed when boron diffuses into the metal core during boron deposition, can be of assistance in the understanding of the boron fiber formation process and the fiber properties. Many of these borides are well-known and their properties have been measured. However, when an unidentified boride is found in the core, it may be difficult to establish its composition because of the small amount of material available, the preferred orientation effects on the reflections in its X-ray pattern, and the possible overlap of X-ray reflections if several borides are present in the core. For example. the proper indexing of the X-ray pattern of WB4, which was formed in the tungsten substrate core during boron fiber formation, was accomplished only after small single crystals of this boride were grown and X-ray precession investigations were conducted.' This note presents the results of a study of the phases formed in the core when tungsten, tantalum, and molybdenum metal wires were used as substrates in the boron fiber preparation process with particular emphasis on the identification and characterization of a higher boride of molybdenum analogous to WB,. Boron was deposited on resistively heated stationary 0.0012-in.-diam tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum wires at 1050°C for various times up to 60 sec using boron trichloride and hydrogen as the reactant gases. After 60 sec of boron deposition the fibers were approximately 0.006 in. in diam. Examination of photomicrographs of fiber cross sections showed that the boron had diffused nearly to the center of the tungsten and molybdenum cores in 15 and 30 sec, respectively, and only halfway to the center of the tantalum core in 60 sec. X-ray diffraction photographs of the fibers indicated that it was also after 15 and 30 sec deposition times that the tungsten and molybdenum metal reflections, respectively, had disappeared from the X-ray patterns of the fibers. The patterns of the boron fibers produced using tantalum wire as a substrate showed that amorphous boron, TaB2, and tantalum metal were present after a few seconds deposition time and remained even after deposition times of 60 sec. Until a deposition time of 15 sec was reached, the tungsten substrate fibers contained amorphous boron,273 6WB, W2B5, and WB4 as well as tungsten metal, while the molybdenum substrate fibers contained amorphous boron, MoBa, Mo2B5, and molybdenum metal for deposition times up to 30 sec. Just before the molybdenum metal pattern disappeared, a pattern similar to that of WB, appeared, suggesting that a phase, MOB,, isomorphous with WB,, was present in the fiber. This same pattern was obtained from the product formed by heating a mixture of molybdenum metal and excess boron powder in a boron nitride crucible at 1960°C in an argon atmosphere. As was the case with the WBn pattern, this pattern could best be indexed on the basis of a hexagonal unit cell rather than the tetragonal unit cell Chrktien and Helgorsky reported for ~0~4,~ see Table I. The unit cell parameters for MoB4 were calculated to be a, = 5.214A, co = 6.358A. This paper shows an economic feasible approach to implement greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures into the mining and metallurgy industry (MMI). The goal to improve energy consumption is directly linked to the reduction of GHG emissions in the MMI. A baseline scenario of the considered reference system and of the respective reference year has to be designed and analysed. In a second step an analysis of the same operation using the best available technology (BAT) processes is carried out to generate a basis for a benchmark system. The identified gaps will be reported and the potential GHG emission reductions will be put into relation to the investment, running cost and generated carbon credits of the new process technologies to be implemented. This economic feasibility calculation is necessary to realise a cost efficient GHG reduction roadmap decision-making for implementing new technology into the companyÆs business operations. The GHG reduction roadmap is developed using the marginal abatement curve approach.

In recent years, west-central Arizona and adjacent California have become the focus of geologic and exploration attention because of its excellent exposure of detachment-fault terrane. Detachment faults, normal faults with nearly horizontal fault planes, are the result of regional extension. Rocks on the lower plate consist of mylonitized intrusive, metasedimentary and crystalline rocks highly altered to chlorite; upper plate rocks comprise sedimentary, volcanic, metasedimentary, and metavolcanic rocks. The movement of the detachment fault causes the rocks on the upper plate to be severely fractured and brecciated thus making them Ideal conduits for mineralizing fluids. Mineralization favored the more reactive sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the upper plate. Three gold deposits, located in upper plate rocks, are currently being mined along the Colorado River corridor: the Picacho Mine near Yuma, Arizona, 70 mi south of the study area; the American Girl Mine In southeastern California, 60 mi southwest; and the Copperstone Mine near the southern end of this study area. Samples from the above three mines were used to create a geochemical model of detachment-related gold deposits. Antimony, arsenic, barium, copper, mercury, molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and zinc all occur In the mine samples in concentrations at least three times greater than found elsewhere in similar rock types. Samples taken by the Bureau from the wilderness study areas contain similar anomalous concentrations of the same elements as well as elevated concentrations of several other elements Including: lead, fluorine, cerium, uranium, and samarium.

This paper summarizes the benefits ofusing an in-situ analyzer in a sampling and valuation program. The tests and studies cited quantify the problems associated with current conventional sampling techniques and contrast conventionally-obtained results with those obtained through in-situ analysis. Data are presented to show the improved precision in valuation resulting from the in-situ method. Greater precision in estimating the mineral content of unmined ground becomes increasingly important as mines strive for optimum exploitation of their deposits. As the following analysis shows, the variable distribution of minerals within a deposit, along with the difficulty and the cost of high density sampling limits the precision which is currently possible in practice. An inherent problem exists in the conventional method of sampling. The erratic values of ore grade necessitate the collection oflarge numbers of samples for statistically accurate valuation and ore reserve estimation. Owing to the cost of manpower, current sampling techniques do not allow for the collection of sufficiently large numbers of samples. The most common method of sampFng in current practice is chip sampling, although bulk sampling is sometimes used. The intent of sampling is to obtain an estimate of the value of blocks of ground prior to mining. This information is used to plan the rate and sequence of mining, yet the sampling intervals which are possible in practice cause these block estimations to be ubject to considerable uncertainty. This inevitably leads to mcorrect mining decisions which may be vy costly.

A new approach for evaluating pit slope stability by the limiting equilibrium method has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The finite element method of plane strain analysis is used to find the stress field of the pit slope structure. This stress field is then used to find the normal and shear stresses along a potential failure surface. The normal stresses are used with the Coulomb equation to calculate the shear resistance. The shear stresses are integrated to determine the total driving force. The factor of safety is evaluated from the ratio of the resisting force to the driving force along a failure surface, and is found to be affected by the elastic material properties, modulus of elasticity, and Poisson's ratio.

At the Century mine in North West Queensland, MMG produces lead and zinc concentrates. The current production rate is close to 500 000 t of zinc per annum. Graphite is the main gangue in the orebody and a substantial quantity of chemicals are used to achieve an acceptable depression of graphite and other gangue materials in the current operation. In the future, it is anticipated that the content of graphite in the orebody will increase while the zinc grade will gradually drop. This scenario illustrates the importance of an optimised suite of flotation chemicals to maximise concentrate grade and recovery. As an alternative to the current reagent suite where dextrin is used to depress graphite, laboratory test work and subsequent plant trials were conducted with alternative depressants. These depressants facilitated both graphite depression and elevated zinc grades in the rougher concentrate. As an added benefit, it was also observed that the silica content in the zinc concentrate was reduced in the presence of the biopolymer selected for the plant trials. Results from both laboratory tests and plant trials will be discussed to illustrate how this change of reagent suite improved flotation yield at the MMG Century Mine.CITATION:Wynn, R, Lauten, R A, Liang, H and Stoitis, N, 2014.
