"Strong earthquakes occur frequently in Japan, and some rock tunnels have sustained severe damages on their permanent lining. Many road tunnels, which were constructed by conventional steel arch support and timber lagging method, exist in Japan and they need risk mitigation measures against earthquakes as per our empirical knowledge. Many reinforcing measures for deformed tunnels that may be effective against earthquakes are developed; however, behaviors during earthquakes are not fully understood.In this study, static loading tests and numerical analysis, which simulate a loading condition during earthquakes, were carried out to clarify the effect of the countermeasures. The Load-bearing capacity is estimated for the tunnel structures facilitated by the installment of an inverted arch; however, a joint between inverted arch and sidewall become structural weakness. Rock bolts and carbon fiber sheets have a potential able to mitigate the risks of collapse of the lining by the forces from an earthquake.INTRODUCTIONA number of rock tunnels with no apparent unfavorable ground conditions suffered severe damage, including the collapse of their permanent lining, in large seismic events such as the Chuetsu Earthquake in 2004 (e.g., Mashimo 2005). Since these tunnels were considered to exhibit the required structural strength to survive earthquakes, studies are being carried out to clarify the mechanical behavior of tunnels during earthquakes and their damage mechanism (e.g., Kusaka et al. 2009); however, the aseismic design methodology for mountain tunnels has not yet been established.In many cases of earthquake-damaged tunnels, some defects already existed, such as improper construction and deterioration of lining concrete. Although countermeasures are usually implemented against such problems, their earthquake-resistant effect was not fully understood.In this study, static loading tests and numerical analyses to reproduce these tests were carried out assuming that a rock tunnel was affected by the earthquake to clarify the mechanism of the lining damage and the effect of the countermeasures."

The productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycling plants in the United States on January 1, 1958, was 48.8 million gallons per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represented an increase of 2.4 million gallons per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. In the previous 2-year period, capacity had increased 7.5 million gallons per day. The major increase in operating capacity occurred in Texas and New Mexico. In New Mexico, capacity increased 43 percent. The total number of plants decreased from 600 on January 1, 1956, to 584 on January 1, 1958. The number of operating plants decreased from 571 to 558. Five new plants were completed in Colorado, increasing the number of operating plants from 7 to 12.

Recognizing that the planned commercial exploitation of polymetallic nodules in the deep sea should be accompanied by environmental studies in order to protect this largest and least understood ecosystem of our planet, the German Ministry for Research and Technology has since 1989 funded a longterm and large-scale disturbance-recolonization (DISCOL) experiment in the abyssal Peru Basin of the equatorial South Pacific Ocean. The circular study site is located at 4150m depths and encompasses about 10km2 of relatively flat, heavily sedimented sea floor with low (< 15%) nodule coverage near an existing German nodule mining exploration license area. The RV SONNE, a large and well-equipped multi-purpose research vessel, served as platform for all environmental cruises conducted to date. The initial DISCOL expedition (SO-61, Feb.-March 1989) was carried out in two legs. During DISCOL 1/1, a study site was selected, a pre-disturbance baseline assessment was undertaken, and sea floor disruption was begun using the "plow-harrow", a uniquely designed disturber device towed repeatedly across the circular study area. During DISCOL 1/2, disturber deployments continued until the device had created 78 criss-crossing and partially overlapping tracks along which nodules were essentially plowed under while sediment from up to 15cm below the seabed had been turned over and exposed at the surface. In addition to the obvious within disturber track impacts, sediment mobilized by plowing drifted off with the prevailing near-bottom current and redeposited downstream, blanketing nearby areas not directly disturbed. Immediately after the disturbance phase, an initial post-impact sampling series was performed. The DISCOL Experimental Area (DEA) was revisited about six months (DISCOL 2, SO-64, Sept. 1989), three years (DISCOL 3, SO-77, Feb. 1992), and seven years (ATESEPP SO-106, Jan.-March 1996) after disturbance to collect further post-impact samples, monitor changes in the benthic community and follow the recolonization process. In addition to benthic community studies, plankton investigations were initiated during the third DISCOL cruise (SO-77) and continued during three further cruises (SO-78, SO-79 and SO-80/2) in 1992.

A three-dimensional finite element Ground-water flow code has been developed that incorporates saturated/unsaturated, two-regime flow (i.e., both Darcian and non-Darcian) and solves for the seepage face at a surface of outflow. This code is capable of more realistically predicting ground-water inflows to an open-pit mine under the throttling effects of non-Darcian flow. The height of the seepage face on highwalls and the shape of the phreatic surface in the vicinity of the pit that it calculates can also produce more probable estimates of pore pressures for analysis of slope stability.

Ventilation is an expensive prerequisite for underground mining. Current mining trends, including increasing depth and mechanization and more stringent health regulations would generally dictate that more air volume is required in order to provide good working conditions underground. However, any increase in the mine’s intake airflow can produce a disproportionate increase in power consumption and hence operating costs due to the cubic relationship between the sup-plied air power and the airflow (Power a Flow3). Furthermore, forecasts of significant increase in energy prices and new commitments with regard to reductions of greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions, determined the mining industry to look into developing new concepts, design tools and incorporate the latest mining technologies in order to lower capital and operating costs while meeting commitments regarding GHG emissions. The advances in computing power and modelling software now make it possible to design, model and schedule a mine from opening to closure. A developing trend is to design and plan the mine by means of orebody modelling software, followed by using discrete-event simulation techniques to predict production rates and evaluate various operating scenarios throughout the life of the mine. The authors are currently evaluating how such process simulators could be adapted in order to forecast the need for materials or a specific resource, and one of these would be the mine’s “life-cycle” airflow demand as a function of scheduled production rates and mine operating characteristics. Further to this, based upon the mine’s life-cycle airflow demand schedule, the ventilation system could then be designed using a mine ventilation simulator. This new design approach would integrate in parallel the development of the ventilation system with the current mining conditions, therefore, heading towards “develop-as-you-go” as opposed to developing the system for final requirements with high upfront costs. This new ventilation system design criteria would also incorporate the use of the “ventilation-on-demand” technology, which will further lower development and production costs and implicitly, the mines’ GHG emissions.

During the geological synthesis of the Réservoir Pipmuacan area (NTS 22E) by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles (Québec), several ilmenite-apatite occurrences, some well-known and some recently discovered, have been examined. These occurrences are hosted in the Lac-Saint-Jean and Labrieville AMCG anorthositic suites. The Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite (1160-1140 Ma), composed of multiple intrusions covering an extensive surface area, is characterized by labradorite plagioclase. The Labrieville Anorthositic Suite (1010-1008 Ma) is characterized by andesine plagioclase. It was previously known as the Labrieville Anorthosite, which was composed of a small isolated pluton located east of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. However, new geochronological data and field observations indicate that the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite in fact includes several intrusive bodies, namely the La Hache Monzonite and the Mattawa Anorthosite. A series of major structures (Saint-Fulgence, Pipmuacan, and Chute-des-Passes deformation zones) and their conjugate faults played an important role in the emplacement of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. The Saint-Fulgence deformation zone appears to have been involved in the emplacement of the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite. Oxide mineralizations are abundant in both anorthositic suites. Ilmenite, magnetite (± titaniferous), and apatite assemblages are found mostly in the labradorite-type anorthosites, while hemo-ilmenite, magnetite and apatite assemblages are associated only with the andesine-type anorthosites. Field works has revealed ilmenite-apatite mineralizations in a variety of settings, with grades reaching 48% TiO2, 16.2% P2O5, and 71.7% Fe2O3 (tot). Numerous oxide-bearing gabbronorites, often accompanied by or located near massive apatite-oxide accumulations (nelsonites), were discovered. Among these oxide-rich zones, breccia zones with anorthosite enclaves in an oxide matrix (ilmenite-magnetiteapatite) have been observed. Locally, ilmenite-apatite mineralization occurs as cumulate concentrations in ultramafic rocks. Evidence has been observed for immiscible magmas, for magmas differentiated from a mangerite or jotunite parent, and even for late magmas differentiated from the anorthosite magma itself (apatite-bearing anorthosite). Finally, the northern part of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite hosts sulfide and vanadium mineralizations associated with ilmenite-apatite enriched zones, with grades reaching 1.48% Cu, 1.22% Ni, 1.6% Cr2O5, 0.25% Co, and 0.52% V2O5.

Prior to the merger of BHP and Billiton, both companies had a keenfocus on improving their performance in health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) matters. This shared intent, albeit executed insomewhat different ways, provided an excellent foundation for the newCompany. During the integration planning phase, a team was formed toconsider the organisational design for consistently achieving world class HSEC performance. The design included the policy platform, resources, structures, standards and procedures to be implemented in the merged entity. A key aspect of the design was the fully integrated HSECManagement Standards. These Standards create the framework for theconsistent application of BHP BillitonÆs HSEC Policy at all of ourmanaged operations across the world. The Standards have their origin in similar frameworks adopted by BHP during the 1990s, as well as thewell-known quality related standards (eg ISO 14001). However, they areunique in that they combine all aspects of HSEC management into asingle integrated set of auditable standards. By combining these areas and integrating our HSEC Management Standards with other aspects of the æBHP Billiton WayÆ, we are establishing a holistic, line management driven improvement approach. Over time, the BHP Billiton Way will embed a systematic improvement philosophy that we expect will become a key source of competitive advantage. The HSEC Management Standards are consistent with ISO 14001,OHSAS 18001, the Australian Minerals Industry Code for EnvironmentalManagement and generally aligned with SA8000. While compliance withthese external standards ensures that a systematic approach andimprovement plans are in place, BHP BillitonÆs HSEC Standards gofurther to include minimum performance requirements that reflect theintent of our HSEC Policy. Therefore, implementation at site levelensures that robust systems are in place to implement our Policy and that accreditation can be achieved to external standards if required.To assess implementation of the HSEC Management Standards anaudit system has been designed which incorporates both self-assessmentand peer review. Each site is required to undertake an annualself-assessment of compliance with the Standards using a commonassessment protocol. Every three years a peer review is conducted at each site to confirm the results of self-assessment and to provide a means of sharing knowledge throughout the Company. The review teams are composed of line managers and HSEC professionals from around theCompany, representatives of our joint venture partners and independentspecialists as required. The Company has committed to public reportingof the audit results through our annual HSEC report and this is reflected in our published targets. From a wider perspective, as we in the resources industry strive tocollectively raise our HSEC performance and reputation, there may be arole for industry based HSEC Management Standards complemented bya level of independent review.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) IN metallurgical circle it is. known widely, but somewhat vaguely, that the ease of reduction of metallic .oxides. depends largely on the way they have been prepared. It is likewise known that. different forms of carbon have different and greatly varying reducing powers. It is the purpose of, this paper to show somewhat more definitely and scientifically these facts. Sonic years ago the writer published an account of pyrometric determinations of the reduction temperature of zinc oxides variously prepared and of several kinds.1 In said paper it was shown that the temperature at which zinc oxide evolves zinc according to the equation, ZnO+C? Zn+CO depends upon the nature of -the two reacting bodies. The determinations bad a range of accuracy of from 2°to 6°C.,whereas differences were found to, amount to an extreme of 90° C. So the differences are real ones and must have a definite cause. The equation of boiling water, (H2 O)4 = 4 (H20) has a fixed temperature for? equilibrium of 100° C. at 760 mm. pressure. In general, all equations reacting in the liquid or the gaseous phase have well-defined constant physical conditions which govern the equilibrium point and reaction velocities.

Coal froth flotation cells typically receive little attention in coal preparation plants. They process only a small portion of the total coal feed (perhaps 5-1 0% of the total plant feed in the United States), they are viewed as a way to take the load off the refuse thickener, and their operation is not well-understood by cleaning plant operators. Operating parameters are set based on the equipment supplier information, and reagent dosages are set at the recommendation of the latest chemical vendor. The cells then operate day in and day out, recovering coal and producing a product that may not meet ash or sulfur specifications or that may be the wrong percent solids for downstream dewatering operations. If improvements can be made to this circuit, then the whole plant will benefit. Paying attention to rate and residence time and the wealth of data from the literature or from a series of targeted laboratory tests can give operators the key to improving the performance of froth flotation cells AND overall plant performance. This paper provides an overview of froth flotation rate and residence time data and gives practical suggestions for specifying and using laboratory tests to improve froth flotation performance. Suggestions for improving froth cell performance are also given based on available literature data.

Oxidation/reduction (REDOX) alloy media, as used in wastewater treatment, is founded on the exchange of electrons. Because of this electron exchange, many contaminants are converted to harmless components which require no further treatment. Other types of contaminants are removed from the waste stream by electrochemically bonding to the alloy medium. This paper discusses the REDOX reactions, the role of the alloy medium in various treatment processes, and describes specific applications of REDOX alloy media for the removal and minimization of waste. The characteristics and handling of spent treatment media is also reviewed as a further consideration in waste minimization.

The differences in starch demands that occur between ore types subjected to the anionic flotation of calcium-activated gangue and the range of residual starch contents expected to give the best metallurgical response were evaluated on a batch and pilot plant basis. A phenol-sulfuric acid procedure was used to determine the residual starch contents in the iron ore slurries. Three pilot plant campaigns on samples from a group of orebodies located on the Marquette Range, Michigan, showed that in the rougher flotation pulp, a residual carbohydrate range of 25 to 100 ppm, which is equivalent to a 0.5 lb/short ton spread, yielded optimum results. Concentrates assaying at least 65 percent Fe and less than 6.0 percent Si02 and containing more than 80 per-cent of the recoverable iron were obtained. Both batch and continuous research indicated that starch adsorption is calcium modulated and relatively unaffected by the fatty acid additions employed. Residual starch level is not a critical control factor, but the addition must be adjusted to about 25 to 50 ppm residual starch and kept in this range for most effective utilization of the added tapioca flour.

Liquid surface tensions of copper and 18 Group IV-A to VIII transition metals (Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Cb, Ta, Mo, W, Re, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Fe, Ni. Co) have been measured by the static pendant-drop and dynamic drop-weight methods on the same rod sample. The drops were formed by electron-bombardment heating in high vacuum. Application of necessary corrections enabled determination of surface tensions to k2 pct and agreement between methods to * 1 to 4 pct for all the metals studied. Evidence is presented that the liquid surface was well screened by metal vapor, suggesting negligible adsorption of gaseous impurities and that the surface tensions measured are characteristic of the metals involved. Correlations between liquid surface tension and melting point, molar volume, heat of vaporization, and atomic number are presented and discussed. Temperature coefficients of surface tension were calculated using Eötvös&apos; law. SURFACE tension and interface energies of metals are the result of incomplete atomic coordination resulting in a force perpendicular to the boundary, tending to minimize its area. These energies are important in many phases of metallurgy, including microstructure, sintering, joining, electronic emission, and lubrication, which in turn affect many physical and mechanical properties of metals. Liquid surface tension refers to the interface between the liquid and its own vapor or nonreactive atmosphere, and is considered a physical property of the liquid. Since equilibrium shapes can be readily obtained with liquids, the units of surface tension (force per length) and interface energy (energy per area) are interchangeable. Thermo-dynamically, the surface tension ?LV is given by the change in free energy F with surface area A at constant pressure P, temperature T, and composition N: for commercially important refractory metals, vanadium, columbium, tantalum,13,14 molybdenum,14 and tungsten,l5 and none for the rare platinum-group metals and rhenium. Measuring the surface tensions of transition metals is difficult because of their high reactivity and melting points. Of the many techniques available,16-18 the pendant-drop 19-21 and drop-weight methods17,22 are considered superior because they can be modified to eliminate persistent sources of contamination such as supports and capillaries necessary in the popular sessile drop, capillary rise, and maximum-bubble-pressure techniques. The necessary modification is to melt a drop on the tip of a vertical rod, which provides support through a solid of the same composition.13,15 The object of the work was to study the surface-tension behavior of copper and transition metals, having reasonably low vapor pressures. Liquid surface tension of each pure metal was systematically determined by using a combination of the static pendant-drop and dynamic drop-weight methods on the same rod. Liquid drops were formed by electron-bombardment heating in high vacuum. EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, the metals studied were high purity and generally were obtained in rod form. The exceptions were titanium and zirconium, which were machined from crystal bars, and molybdenum (tot 11, osmium, and ruthenium, which were sintered and arc cast into rods. All the metals were ground or swaged to desired sizes between 1- and 7-mm diam, and centerless ground round and smooth to a finish better than 50 µ in., rms. Each rod was thoroughly cleaned with steel wool, degreased, acid etched, and dried. In a typical run, the rod was vertically clamped in a modified floating-zone electron-bombardment furnace designed after Calverley23 and Carlson.24 The specimen was outgassed and maintained positive at several kilovolts in a dynamic vacuum of 10-5 to 10-7 mm. The bottom end was enclosed by a tantalum pillbox and heated by electrons emitted from a hot concentric tungsten filament mounted on a movable bracket. The bombardment power was slowly raised until melting was observed. Power requirements ranged from 30 w for copper to 1300 w for 4-mm tungsten. Commercial stress -relieved TD Nickel bar was shown to retain room- and elevated-temperature tensile strength after exposure up to 2501°F. Cold swaging increased both room -temperature and 2000°F tensile strength. After annealing at 2500°F the strengthening due to swaging was retained at 2000°F hilt eliminated at room temperature. Annealing produced changes in hardness and X-ray half peak width indicating the presence of recovery processes as 1071° as 1000°F but no recrystallization of swaged material was noted at any temperature. In contrast to swaging, rolling induced a recrystal-lized structure after annealing. The tensile strength of this recrystallized structure was comparable to the cold-worked condition. High-temperature tensile properties of as -received bar were highly anisotropic with the transverse tensile strength being one fifth the longitudinal value. The aniso-/ropy is affected by working direction and may he partially reversed by changing the direction of metal flow. The divergence in tensile strength, beginning above 550°F or- approximate one third the absolute melting point, is strain-rate dependent. T D Nickel is a commercial dispersion-hardened alloy containing 2 vol pct thoria. The dispersion, consisting of spherical particles 0.030 to 0.050 in diameter with an interparticle spacing of less than 1 is reported to maintain stable properties up to 2400°F.1 This stability of second phase results in maintenance of elevated-temperature strength at higher temperatures and longer times than normal nickel-base superalloys.2 The purpose of this paper is to describe the effect of various mechanical working operations on the strength and microstructural stability of TD Nickel bar. MATERIAL AND PROCEDURES All material used in this study was commercial TD Nickel bar. This material is produced by a chemical process which results in a nickel powder containing a dispersion of thoria particles. The powder is then pressed, sintered, extruded, and subsequently worked to bar stock. Three starting materials from three separate lots were used: as-extruded bar. 1-in.-diam stress-relieved bar, and 1/2-in.-diam stress-relieved bar. Since TD Nickel bar stock is cold-worked without a recrystalliza-tion anneal, the accumulated deformation or degree of cold work in these materials increases as the bar diameter decreases. Some of the 1/2-in.-diam bar was swaged to 1/4 in. diameter at room temperature in order to produce an as-worked condition for comparison with the stress-relieved stock. Tensile testing was performed on an Instron Tensile Tester at a constant crosshead speed of 0.020 in. per min. The 0.2 pct offset yield strength was measured from the load-crosshead movement plot. Specimen gage dimensions were 0.080 in. in diameter by 0.40 in. in length, producing a strain rate of approximately 0.050 min-1. Specimens were tested in air and heated within a resistance-wound furnace controlled to ±5°F. A 15-min soak at temperature was employed before testing. Samples were heat-treated in air and specimens machined after exposure with sufficient material removed to eliminate any surface contamination. X-ray line breadth was determined from a diffractometer scan of a transverse face of a bar using copper K, radiation. Metallographic preparation utilized standard mechanical polishing with Carapella&apos;s etch. Specimens for electron microscopy were electropolished in a 1:7 sulfuric/methaol solution and chromium-shadowed collodion replicas prepared. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION I) Effect of Elevated-Temperature Exposure on the properties of TD Nickel. The effect of various elevated-temperature exposures on the room-temperature tensile strength of TD Nickel is shown in Table I. In the unexposed condition the tensile strength, reduction in area, and hardness all increase with increasing accumulated deformation while the elongation decreases. After exposure at 2500°F the strength of all three materials decreases to about 65,000 psi and the elongations increase slightly. The apparent increase in strength of the 1-in. bar after a 2000°F treatment is probably experimental scatter. These results indicate that the room-temperature strengthening due to additional deformation is annealed out upon elevated-temperature exposure. In contrast to the room-temperature data, the 2000°F tensile strengths increase in order of increasing deformation even after exposure. The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 177,000-acre Secesh study area; most of the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel mapped and sampled several hundred mine and prospect workings; 1,715 rock, soil, and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 mi east-northeast of McCall, Idaho, in the Payette National Forest. Five mining districts extend into or are adjacent to the study area. There have been more than 3,000 mining claims located inside the study area, 884 are current. In excess of $17 million (historical value) in placer and lode gold has reportedly been produced from the Warren district alone. The study area contains gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, and antimony. At least six properties that would be in the proposed wilderness contain gold resources; more than 18 million tons averaging 0.038 oz/ton gold have been identified. Additional resources may be located at 4 other localities. The 4th of July mine is currently producing gold/silver/lead ore. Similar resources may be located on at least 3 other properties. Placer samples from the study area contained up to 0.34 oz gold/yd3 ($120/yd3). The samples are representative of relatively small occurrences and do not constitute resources; small quantities of gold may be recovered by recreational placer miners.

To improve the existing process of a large-scale scheelite concentrator in Jiangxi Province, this paper presents an advanced process æselective flotation of copper and flotation desulfurisation û rougher flotation of scheelite û heating-stirring and cleaning of rougher concentrate at normal temperature without reagent removalÆ. The test work was conducted on an ore sample containing 0.75 per cent tungsten (WO3), and the following technical indices were obtained: 1.03 per cent of the scheelite concentrate yield, 65.37 per cent of the concentrate grade and 86.31 per cent of WO3 recovery, indicating that the study achieved the objective of improving the tungsten recovery. The technical key of this process is to employ combined regulators and direct flotation of the slurry after being heated, which not only assured the technical indicators of beneficiation but also simplified the process.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. ThIS discussion describes a method for the addition of small amounts of oxygen to columbium (niobium) in an accurate and reproducible manner. The method is based on the complete reduction by columbium of a carefully weighed amount of another metal oxide. The equilibrium Pq associated with Cb-CbO mixtures is extremely low, e.g., 10"25 atm at 100O°C, and the pressures over Cb-0 solutions are even lower. The equilibrium Pq associated with a given metal-metal oxide mixture can be easily obtained, with the aid of a Richardson-Jeffes chart.&apos; Although columbium should effectively reduce almost any metal-metal oxide combination, the proper choice of a metal-metal oxide system is complicated by the low rate of oxygen transport in the gas phase at low oxygen pressures and the difficulty in reducing any columbium suboxide formed during the reduction of the oxygen source material. Thermodynamically, oxide formation on columbium will be avoided so long as the oxygen partial pressure over the columbium is below the equilibrium pressure associated with the mixture Cb-CbO. The logical choice of a source for oxygen would appear to be a mixture of Cb-CbO, since oxide formation would be precluded by nucleation difficulty. But calculations using the kinetic theory of gasses indicate that, for a temperature of 900°C, the reaction would proceed too JAMES D. "The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is temporally and spatially related to the emplacement of a late Cretaceous granodiorite-tonalite stock in southeastern British Columbia and contains an estimated 49 million tonnes grading O.I9% MoS2- No metal zonation patterns are apparent, with the exception of peripheral tungsten skarn, and exploration was guided largely by geological interpretation. It is typical of the granodiorite, or fluorine-poor type of molybdenum deposit. Molybdenite is contained within a quartz-feldspar vein stockwork and coeval dissemination in igneous (and less commonly metasedimentary) hosts. In general, molybdenite is strongly associated with alkali feldspars, but in detail it is intimately associated with incipient muscovite replacement of albite and K-feldspar; veins that lack feldspars are also typically barren of molybdenite. These textures suggest that fe/dspathic alteration (and precipitation in veins) was an important precursor to mineralization, and the occurrence of similar textures elsewhere (e.g. Henderson) suggest that early feldspathic alteration is important to the genesis of molybdenum deposits in general. Molybdenite deposition at Trout Lake was preceded by contact metamorphism, skarn and potassic alteration, and was overprinted by muscovite-ankerite (phyllic) alteration. Only moderate temperature changes are recorded by the metamorphic and alteration mineral assemblages (350°C to 450°C}; however, with time, fluids became increasingly more acidic and enriched in C02- In light of the intimate molybdenitemuscovite intergrowths, the decrease of pH probably exerted a major control on mineralization.IntroductionGranite-hosted molybdenum deposits can be classified in terms of the composition of the related intrusion, e.g., the granodiorite and granite types of Mutschler et a!. (1981), or the calc-alkaline, alkali-calcic, and alkalic types of Westra and Keith (1981). They have also been classified on the basis of their fluorine contents (Theodore and Menzie, 1984) with the fluorine-rich and -poor varieties roughly corresponding to granite- and granodiorite-type deposits, respectively. For economic reasons, most exploration and research has concentrated on the high-grade/large tonnage granite-type of deposit, exemplified by Climax. F1uorine-poor, granodiorite-type deposits are, however, the most common type in Canada and have been mined in the past (e.g., Endako). In this paper, the authors summarize the research that has been carried out on the fluorinepoor Trout Lake deposit (Boyle and Leitch, 1983; Linnen, 1985; Linnen and Williams-Jones, 1987; 1990) and use what has been learned to develop guidelines for the future exploration of fluorinepoor, granodiorite-type molybdenum deposits."

Phosphonic acid and iminodiacetic acid chelating resins were investigated to assess their potential as selective ion exchangers for separating lanthanide elements and yttrium . The affinity of phosphonic acid resin for lanthanides increases with increasing atomic number , and that of iminodiacetic acid resin for lanthanides increases with atomic number to a maximum for element 62 and then declines with atomic number throughout the remainder of the series . Elution sequences of the elements with mineral acid eluants corresponded favorably with equilibrium data , whereas the elution sequence obtained with chelating eluants was proportional to the relative values of the stability constants of the chelating agents with the lanthanides . Separation of lanthanide mixtures into groups of light and heavy elements with iminodiacetic acid resin appears feasible .
