"Extreme thermophiles, operating at 65 - 90°C, are finding increasing application in biohydrometallurgy These microorganisms have the advantage of exhibiting better oxidation kinetics in terms of reaction rate and extent of mineral solubilisation. These extreme thermophiles are Archae, characterised by a different cell envelope structure perceived to provide reduced structural strength in comparison to bacterial envelopes, and customised metabolic pathways.The active tank bioleaching process, used for high rate leaching, is conducted in a slurry bioreactor. Here sufficient energy dissipation is required to ensure suspension of the mineral phase as well as to sustain high rates of gas liquid mass transfer. It is well known that subjection to hydrodynamic stress of sufficient magnitude may alter the physiological state of a range of micro-organisms through changed viability (ability of the microbes to grow), metabolic activity and integrity.In this paper, we report on studies carried out to quantify the ability of the extreme thermophile Sulfolobus to withstand the hydrodynamic stress environment generated at high pulp densities in the slurry bioreactor. Both a pyrite system (as a model system) and a chalcopyrite system (as an application) were studied. In laboratory reactor systems, the nature of biological responses to stress induced at high pulp density have been identified in terms of ability of the microbes to grow, their metabolic activity and rate of leaching and cell integrity. Critical operating conditions within the laboratory reactor are identified and the mechanism mediating reduced performance considered."

The Bureau of Mines is studying possible modifications in conventional ore-processing methods that will confine and permit controlled disposal of radioactive liquid wastes. Stream and ground water pollution from radio-active nuclides, principally radium 226 and thorium 230, in liquid wastes from uranium mills can be minimized by reusing the waste solution within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in an acid leach-resin-in-pulp flowsheet was investigated in the laboratory. The process consists of acid leaching for dissolution of the uranium, sand-slime separation and countercurrent decantation washing for recovery of a pregnant slime slurry, and the use of ion-exchange resin for recovery of uranium from the slurry. Reuse of clarified barren effluent for washing in the simulated mill circuit was carried through 55 cycles. Dissolution of uranium from the ore averaged 97.5 percent. Washing efficiency of 99.9 percent was attained when using 4.35 volume tons4 of combined barren effluent and makeup water per ton of ore. Absorption of uranium from the pregnant slime slurry by an ion-exchange resin averaged over 99.9 percent.

"UG2 chromitite ore is a complex, highly disseminated platinum ore from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, with typical platinum group mineral (PGM) grain sizes below 15µm. The introduction of stirred mills to the platinum industry has enabled grinding to finer product sizes, which has improved liberation and recovery of the finely grained PGMs. However, reduction in particle size leads to an increase in chromite entrainment in the flotation concentrate, which has a negative impact on the subsequent smelting process. Factors such as particle size, froth structure, solids concentration and water recovery have all been identified as impacting entrainment, but whether particle shape also has a significant effect is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the recovery of chromite particles by entrainment during the flotation of UG2 ore is affected by particle morphology. A laboratory vertical stirred mill with inert ceramic media was used for grinding UG2 ore which was then floated in a batch flotation cell. Flotation feed and concentrate samples were analyzed using QEMSCAN to quantify the angularity and aspect ratio distributions of the particles. The stirred mill product was found to have relatively broad aspect ratio and angularity distributions, with the major mineral components (chromite and silicates) having very similar shape characteristics. Analysis of flotation feed and concentrate samples suggested that particle shape does not have a significant effect on chromite entrainment."

Much research effort has been spent in attempting to reduce the high energy costs in grinding, but relatively little in developing methods to enhance the liberation of the minerals from each other. This paper presents some ideas on the nature and role of grain boundaries in mineral assemblies, and their influence on the propagation of cracks through the rock. It is argued that if the mechanisms of fracture are more clearly understood, crack propagation may be controlled in such a way that intergranular fracture dominates breakage, producing less fines and a higher degree of liberation.

"Traditional alloy theory models have been applied relative to the three solid phases of uranium: alpha (orthorhombic), beta (tetragonal), and mainly gamma (body centered cubic)[l]. The Darken-Gurry and Miedema models, with modifications based on concepts of Waber, Gschneidner, and Brewer have been used to predict the behavior of four types of solutes: 1) Transition associated with alloying in and containment of the uranium fuel 2) Transuranic elements in the uranium 3) Rare earth fragmentation elements (lanthanides) 4) Transition metals and other fragmentation elements. Using these solute map criteria, elemental behavior have been predicted as highly soluble, marginally soluble, or immiscible (intermetallic phase formers) and have been used to compare solute effects during uranium phase transformations. The overlapping of these solute maps are convenient first approximation tools for predicting alloy behavior.IntroductionAn investigation is in progress to determine the role of various solute elements on size and shape of the 'Y phase field range for uranium to optimize the burning and material processing of nuclear fuel is in progress. Traditional alloy theory models based on correlations to elemental electronic and crystal properties are used to predict solubility and micro structural formation. The effectiveness of this model is based on microstructure property correlations. Darken and Gurry, and Miedema models, with modifications based on concepts of Waber, Gschneidner, and Brewer, models have been used to describe solute solubility with respect to uranium based the on correlation between elemental electronic structure and uranium phases. The alpha (orthorhombic), beta (tetragonal), and gamma (body centered cubic) phases have different solubilities for specific alloy additions as a function of temperature. Using the method of Waber, ellipse diagrams classified those solutes that should have broad solubility in the allotropes of uranium[2]. "The results of mineralogical and technological studies of platiniferous dunites from Svetloborsky zonal massif (Urals platinum belt) are presented and the basic typomorphic signs of productive mineral assemblages are substantiated. The characteristic features of platinum ore mineralization are revealed: a wide range of iron-platinum alloys, enrichment of ore-formed system by the elements Os, Ir, Rh and activity of the S and As in it, intrusion of Fe-Ni sulfides in platinum and its fusion with magnetite. More than 80% of PGM mineral grains has size less than 100 microns, that determines the possibility of significant losses of platinum in the process of gravity separation and the need for additional recovery processes for small and fine fractions of platinum tailings and sludge products. Summarized results of laboratory tests of small-volume sample processing of platiniferous dunites are presented and the processing flow sheet is developed and tested. The flow sheet incorporates several stages, including stage-wise grinding and gravity separation of ore using the centrifugal concentrator Knelson KS-MD for differently sized material and flotation treatment of tailing products using new classes of reagents for additional recovery of PGM fines."

An electron probe micro-analyser, controlled by a dedicated mini-computer,has been operating at Imperial College since 1970. The data assessment capability of the computer was limited and, in order to make better use of the information produced by the analyser, extra computing facilities were needed. Following the initiation of a Laboratory Automation Project at Imperial College involving the use of a central computer linked to laboratory type computers and to further more powerful systems,it became possible to carry out much more detailed and extensive mineralogical analyses by connecting the mini -computer to the Laboratory Automation Network. The paper describes the techniques employed including hardware, software, inter- connection, analysis and operating methods.

"Simulation methods have a big potential in the studies and analyses of complex technological processes and schemes. The simulation method used jointly with flow diagrams and related transmittance models allows describing and analysing dynamic characteristics.The paper presents results of simulation analysis of dynamic characteristics of ore dressing system, called closed circuit mill-classifier-mill. Such systems are widely used in ore processing plants. The system was analysed as a typical system with material feedback, to establish its dynamic characteristics.Flow diagram conforming to the technological scheme is presented in a figure. Transmittances shown in the scheme are defined as follows:GMP - transmittance of rod mill,GP, KZ, GW, KZ - transmittances of overflow and underflow streams of spiral classifier, respectively,GMK - transmittance of ball mill,GT - transmittance of underflow stream from classifier to ball mill,GU, MP, GU, MK - fraction transmittance of outflow streams of rod and ball mill, respectively, summed up at classifier input.Taking into account, in base of carried out analysis the transmittance forms of individual system elements. The calculations are based on numeral forms of transmittances of individual blocks, defined through industrial experimentation.Step input function to rod mill was assumed to be a step of mass ore flow rate to the mill. Responses are defined as product densities.This figure demonstrates the way of input signal transmission by consecutive elements of the system and shape of these elements' responses. It can be noticed that step signal undergoes gradual change from the stream of the first order to those of higher and higher orders as a distance from process leading edge increases. Simultaneously, the impulse signal is subject to systematic smoothing and decay. From the technological point of view, the most important is response stream in point 5 (on the above figure) that characterises classifier overflow, which is a final product of this system."

"A complete list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1947, was published as Information Circular 7432. 3/The present list is a supplement thereto that includes all of the equipment approved during the calendar year 1947.The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7432 showed six air compressors on the active list; two additional compressors, Nos. 7 and 8 in this category, were approved during 1947.Items 2 and 7, unmounted loader and power unit, respectively, under Loading and Conveying Equipment, item 2, rubber-mounted mining machine and item 8, distribution box, appear in Information Circular 7432. They are repeated to show that approvals of these four equipments were extended to cover an additional voltage rating which requires material change in design.Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining. The present paper, with Information Circular 7432, gives the complete list of permissible mine equipment that is available under the various classifications."

The Precambrian iron ore of Singhbhum-North Orissa region of eastern India occurs as part of the horseshoe-shaped broad synclinorium known as the Iron Ore Group (IOG) of rocks, which hosts the most important iron ore deposits in India. The Jilling-Langalota iron ore deposits are part of the IOG. Detailed mineralogical characterisation of different ore types has been carried out using transmitted and reflected light microscopy. Scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM- EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) have also been used with a view to test the amenability of these ore types for beneficiation requirements. It has been observed that haematite, martite and goethite are the main iron-bearing minerals. Kaolinite and quartz are the major gangue mineral phases. Considerable mineralogical, textural and compositional variations have been observed among the different ore types. Characterisation data reveals that the massive and hard-laminated ores are of higher grade with very few interlocking textures having haematite and martite as major mineral constitutents. The soft-laminated lateritic and friable ores are relatively low-grade varieties containing various proportions of impurities with complex interlocking textures. The soft-laminated and lateritic ores are porous in nature and contain friable oxide and hydroxides of iron along with kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. The occurrence of kaolinite, gibbsite and hydrated oxides along the cavities and weaker mineral planes of haematite and martite has been observed. The friable nature and high alumina content of these ores are attributed to these secondary phases. The nature of these ores is responsible for producing large amounts of alumina-rich slime during mining and handling operations. Suitable beneficiation schemes have been recommended for each type based on detailed characterisation investigations on these ores.

The Youga gold mine in Burkina Faso, West Africa, is scheduled to produce first gold in the third quarter of calendar 2007. The project is expected to produce 540 000 oz of gold over 6.5 years, from a conventional open pit carbon in leach mine. The direct capital cost of the project is US$47 M. Etruscan Resources Inc, a Canadian based gold exploration and development company, holds 90 per cent of the project company Burkina Mining Company SA (BMC). The state of Burkina Faso is free-carried for the remaining ten per cent of BMC. RMB Resources Limited, of Melbourne Australia, has arranged a US$35 M project finance facility for BMC (the Borrower) as the majority of funding for the Youga project development. The loan facility was provided by RMB Australia Holdings and Macquarie Bank Ltd (the Lenders) each as to 50 per cent in the lending syndicate. The Lenders also provided a gold hedging facility to guarantee a minimum price for the project's gold production. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, part of the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA). The project financing is the first such facility to be arranged for a mining project in Burkina Faso, with little or no precedent available in other UEMOA countries. Therefore, while the Youga gold project is forecast to be a robust project applying conventional mining and processing methods, a number of legal, technical, commercial and social issues required identification, evaluation and resolution before the loan could be established. This paper describes that evaluation process and the resolution of these issues. In-house experience and expertise in both the Lenders' and Borrower's teams has facilitated a greater understanding and `ownership' of the issues and hence provided comfort with risks which might not normally be taken in conventional project developments and project financings. As a result, blanket external reviews were not required by the Lenders. A long-standing relationship between Etruscan and RMB Resources also facilitated solutions to a number of issues. Nevertheless, a degree of flexibility by the Lenders, the Borrower and Etruscan was required to successfully close the financing.

NoRth America has for many years led the world in phosphate production, but with development of African deposits and their marketing conditions with respect to European countries, this leadership will shortly pass to Africa. Algeria, Egypt, Tunis, and Morocco have large phosphate reserves and a correspondingly large production because of easy mining and a ready European market, which was developed during the war. An increase in home consumption is destined to develop for the eastern American fields, and the countries of the Pacific will provide a market for the western producers. New processes indicate a decrease in fertilizer costs, which will encourage a more widespread domestic use and assure better marketing conditions. The African deposits, although benefited by a water haul, have the disadvantage of being isolated from a source of acid so that the crude rock is shipped from Africa to its destination, whereas in the United States the chief product shipped is acidulated rock or various types of superphosphatic fertilizers, The principal types of phosphate deposits used in the manufacture of fertilizers are guanos, apatite, phosphatic marl, phosphatic limestone, phosphatic shale, and phosphate rock which is also known as phosphorite. Some of these deposits are found on each of the continents; Table 1 gives their occurrence, age, location, character, extent, etc. Most of the information found in this table represents a compilation of information published elsewhere in a different form and widely scattered.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThis paper is one of a series recently undertaken by the Mining Branch, Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., to describe current practice in hauling ore and waste by truck at various mines.Heavy-duty ore trucks are replacing railroads at many large open-cut mines and even at a few underground mines. Recently a few mines have been equipped with trucks for transporting ore to a central point, from which conveyor belts move the ore out of the mine. This paper deals only with truck haulage methods and costs.The requirements for efficient low-cost truck haulage are good trucks designed for heavy loads, adequate truck maintenance, smooth roads, and well-trained truck drivers.A correct balance must be maintained between the primary crusher capacity, the number of shovels loading ore, and the number of trucks hauling ore.The cost of tires is important. Tire companies are manufacturing better tires. Mining companies are prolonging the life of tires by building better roads and maintaining correct tire pressure.The trend is toward heavier equipment. In 1949 it cost $0.0925 a long ton to haul ore and waste with a 15-ton truck and $0.0743 a long ton with a 22-ton truck.When trucks are properly maintained, hauling costs do not increase with the age of the trucks. During 1948 it cost $0.1118 per long ton to haul with the four oldest 15-ton trucks and $0.1130 per long ton to haul with the four newest 15-ton trucks, two of which were purchased in 1945 and two in 1947.The weighted ayerage cost of hauling a long ton of ore to the crusher and waste to the dump has been reduced from $0.1159 in 1948 to $0.087 in 1949."

An approximate phase diagram has been developed for the CaF2-CaC2 system, indicating a eutectic point at 1240°C, Ncac2 = 0.13, and no detectable solid solution in either phase. The liquidus line is shown to correspond to a simple c22- ion in solution. A thermo-chemical study of&apos; the reaction between carbon-saturated Ni-Ca alloys and CaC2-CaF2 liquids indicates that lhe Raoullian activity coefficient of CaC2 in dilute solution in Cap2 al 1500°C lies between 8 and 10. Some effects of the stabilily of Cap2-CaC2 solutions at high temperatures on electroslag remelting praclice are outlined. THE alkaline earth acetylides. MIIC2, have a reasonably high thermochemical stability at high temperature in the solid state,&apos; with the exception of magnesium, which forms an unstable acetylide at low temperatures (-500°C) and a carbide, Mg2C3, in the range 700&apos; to 1000°C. The acetylides of calcium and barium have been shown to have limited solubility in their respective chlorides,&apos; and further these solutions contain the acetylide as a C: ion.&apos; The equivalent magnesium solutions have not been studied. Although calcium "carbide" is used as a desulfuriz-ing reagent in steelmaking. and is possibly present as an acetylide-oxide phase in very basic electric arc practice slags, the acetylide ion appears to be substantially unstable in a silicate slag.* As a conse- *This instability arises from equilibria in the reaction: CaC2 + CO = (Ca0) + 3C where the low intrinsic solubility of CaC2 in silicate lattice, and the low activity of CaO in a silicate solution where CaO/Si02 < 1, combine to give a very small equilibrium concentration of CaC2 in solution in such silicate slags at temperatures in the region of I 500°c, even under carbon-saturated conditions. Under highly basic conditions, a liquid CaO-CaC2 phase may separate from the silicate system quence of this, the possibility that reactions involving CaC2 in silicate solutions are of importance to general steelmaking practice is remote. However, in operations involving a slag primarily based on a halide, or alkaline earth oxide, we must take into account the possibility that CaC2 will appear in quantities sufficient to significantly affect both the chemical and physical properties of the slag. The work outlined below presents a study of the CaF2-CaC2 system intended to provide sufficient data to allow an estimate of the importance of this system to electroslag remelting and welding practice. However, we should indicate at this point that there will be other processes, e.g., heat treatment, flux cleaning of castings, fused salt electrolysis, and so forth, where alkaline-earth halide fluxes are in contact with carbon, graphite, or carbides, and where halide-acetylide solutions must be taken into account. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Structural Studies. In view of the difficulty ex-perienced in handling CaC2 prepared from calcium turnings and propane gas at 700°C, it was decided to use solutions prepared directly in the equilibration apparatus, Fig. 1. The starting materials were: a) Ni-Ca-C alloy, prepared by adding calcium to liquid nickel held under calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible; b) calcium fluoride, prepared by fusing calcium fluoride powder (British Drug House "EXTRA PURE") calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible, in air, followed by electrolysis between graphite electrodes at 1 amp cm-2 density, for 10&apos; coulombs per g CaF2. This procedure decomposes the CaO produced by hydrolysis during the fusion step, replacing it by CaC2; Ca2+ + 2e-Ca*(l) Ca*(l) + 2C(gr)-(CaC2)caF2 O2- -2e-O*(g) O*(g) +C(gr)-CO(g) This results in a composition of between 2 and 5 wt pct CaC2 in CaF2. Fifty grams (in lumps) of this material were placed in a graphite crucible, together with Ni-Ca-C alloy (averaging 20 wt pct Ca), and the equilibration apparatus assembled. The alloy reacted with the crucible at high temperature to give CaC2, which dissolved in the calcium fluoride solution to give the desired composition. Cooling curves were plotted manually for these liquids, with rapid stirring and CaF2 seeding to minimize supercooling, and using a Pt/Pt 13 Rh thermocouple calibrated on the freezing points of nickel and copper. This gave a reproducibility of ±0.l°C. and an absolute accuracy of the thermocouple of ±l°C. An example curve is shown in Fig. 2, with the CaF2 end of the binary system in Fig. 3. The CaF2-CaC2 ingots were crushed, under dry nitrogen, and sampled for chemical analysis and X-ray examination. Analytical details are given in the Appendix. Powder diffraction data indicated that the only phases present in all samples examined were calcium fluoride and tetragonal (Types I and 111) calcium acetylide,4 with no evidence of solid solutions or compound formation. 2) Thermochemical Studies. The apparatus used to obtain activity data on CaC2 in these systems is shown in Fig. 4. It consists of an arrangement whereby the graphite crucible and its contents (CaF2-CaC2. The categories of interpass time encountered in hot rolling are characterized. These are shown to fall into three broad categories: short (in rod rolling); intermediate (in strip processing); and long (in plate schedules). The effects of interpass time on recrystallization and carbonitride precipitation are described, and particularly on the interaction between these two mechanisms. The interactions, in turn, determine the final microstructure produced as well as the mechanical properties.

"Mining is a "continuous" process of dependent breakage and materials handling stages, from the initial breakage of the in-situ rock, extraction from the pit or underground, and finally to the surface stockpile and downstream processing. Over time, underground and in-pit mining activities diverged into two separate disciplines, each using a variety of in-situ breakage techniques and surface activities, with processing techniques dependent on mineralogy or grades. This artificial separation of underground and open pit activities was exacerbated when the two became increasingly managed as separate cost centres rather than as an integrated unit. Mass mining essentially began in 1903 when metallurgist Daniel Jackling initiated the world’s first open pit, mining system at the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper deposit in Utah. The term mass mining has since been construed to mean large open pits and cave mining methods, including their variants. These methods are largely non-selective, involving the mass extraction of a deposit irrespective of the uneven distribution of grade and mineralogy. The advantages of mass mining have historically applied mostly to low grade, large scale deposits. With the depletion of mineral reserves closer to the surface, however, new deposits are deeper, lower grade and mixed with more impurities. These and other factors make extraction more difficult and costly. Mass mining is moving rapidly into a new and less certain environment where revolutionary changes are required to effectively deal with future challenges which are technical, economic and environmental (licence to operate). This keynote address presents current initiatives being considered for the next generation of both underground and surface mass mining systems in order to significantly reduce lead times and mining costs (CAPEX and OPEX), substantially increase productivity and meet license to operate requirements. The address is designed to solicit discussion on how better integration of mining and processing can become a platform for these next generation of mass mining systems and can also help the industry deal with the future challenges."

Surface subsidence is a phenomenon mainly associated with longwall mining, although it can also occur if the coal pillar left to protect the surface deteriorates with time and results in the collapse of the room and pillar system. A method has been developed that utilizes physical mine models and laser holographic interferometry. This method is capable of measuring displacements as small as 5 micro- inches by means of generating displacement contours on a surface, even that of granular materials. Analysis of subsidence in room and pillar mining using models of various extraction ratios ad overburden depths along with two different types of overburden model material (sand and gelatin) has been made. The sand represented the extreme brittle conditions of geologic material while the gelatin represented visco-elastic behavior of geologic material. This paper deals with the analysis of data which has been gathered up to date, and mainly associated with the use of sand as an overburden model material. The analysis included the effect of variation of geometric parameters on surface subsidence. Among these parameters are: variation in seam depth and thickness, surface and seam inclination, and extraction ratio.

"The second vertical derivative method of processing aeromagnetic data from low level helicopter surveys yields results correiatable with the known geology and may be utilized to indicate possible targets for future exploration in the Silver Queen and Equity Silver mines areas, near Houston in central British Columbia . The principal zones of alteration associated with mineralization, known from detailed mapping, are further delineated and extended in a way not possible by a cursory examination of the original magnetic data.IntroductionThe second derivative method of processing aeromagnetic data is a long established procedure used to enhance the short wavelength content of the magnetic fields. Some recent exam pies of the use of the second derivative technique have been published by Chandler (p. 385), Sun Yunsheng et al. (p. 424) and Yarger (p. 223) in Hinze, 1985. According to theory, the ""second vertical derivative"" is closely related to the rate of curvature of magnetic (or gravity) fields and is particularly useful in resolving and sharpening local anomalies. The contours on second derivative maps may coincide with important features such as lithological boundaries, faults and mineralized zones.In the Houston area, central British Columbia, aeromagnetic data supplied by local mining companies provide a ready base for analyses. Examples are data sets for the Silver Queen and Equity Silver mines centred 35 km and 34 km south and southeast, respectively, from Houston (Fig. 1), (Cochrane, 1970 and Church, 1985)."

"The dangerous nature of explosives makes them a potential hazard wherever they are used, but they are likely to exercise their greatest harmfulness under conditions inherent in coal mining. The ease with which explosives can be detonated and the suddenness and violence with which they detonate require great care in their handling and use, if acci-dents are to be avoided. Campaigns have been waged by the manufacturers, the Federal Bureau of Mines, coal-mining companies, and other agencies to educate users of explosives in their dangers and in their proper use and care.Probably 95 percent of the explosives accidents can be attributed to poor judgment, carelessness, negligence, or chance taking. In many explosives accidents it is difficult to determine the cause definitely, as the evidence of the origin is destroyed by the blast and frequently those involved have been killed. Survivors of the accident often are of little help in determining the cause, as the accident occurs so suddenly they cannot tell what happened or prefer not to divulge the information they have because it may point to their own carelessness.A survey has indicated that about 10 percent of all fatalities in coal mines were caused by explosives accidents (excluding gas and dust explosions initiated by explosives). A list of explosives accidents by States, from 1925 to 1932, classified according to the severity of the accidents, indicated that Kentucky and Wyoming had the greatest number of fatalities resulting from explosives accidents. Records of the Bureau of Mines show that 14 coal-mine explosions occurred from January 1 to June 1, 1943. Explosives were involved in four of these explosions. Black powder caused two of the accidents and permissible explosives used in a nonpermissible manner the other two. These statistics are mentioned to show that explosives are still causing severe accidents.Elimination of the hazards associated with explosives begins on the surface. Storage magazines should have no opening, except for entrance and ventilation; ventilators should be screened effectively to prevent the admittance of sparks as well as to prevent unauthorized entrance. The interior should be kept clean and dry, and the floor should be of nonsparking material with no metal exposed. The surrounding area should be kept free of combustible material for not less than 25 feet (and preferably 50 feet) in all directions. Storage magazines should be fire-resistant and reasonably bulletproof."
