This report surveys the efforts of six contractors to the U.S. Bureau of Mines with regard to their electromagnetic noise measurement programs. What has been done, what is planned, and evaluations and recommendations are given for each contractor. The main observation is that to date there is not sufficient knowledge of electromagnetic interference in mine environments to design a reliable communication system. This knowledge should be available by the end of June 1972 if certain planned programs are completed successfully. A major effort of this report is to establish parameters to be measured, units to be used, and workable formats for data presentation. This is given in Appendix A. Some details concerning equipment, procedures, locations, and sample data are included in Appendix B.

When considering all the aspects of a viable mine plan, it is important to estimate the accurate cost of mine ventilation, which varies as a function of airway dimensions, fan selection and ventilation network. Optimization of the overall elements of ventilation design can lead to very significant cost savings when capital and operating cost savings are considered in combination. This paper will describe a methodology, whereby ventilation costs can be minimized by optimizing the ventilation aspects of mine design and fan selection, by providing a brief description on ventilation theory and the factors which affect ventilation operating and capital costs.

The CSIRO ore classification scheme for Pilbara ores was used as a reference frame to target recognisable ore types/textures with potentially elevated phosphorus content for detailed analysis. Particles of each individual ore texture were separated from a Brockman high-P ore and each class was characterised using methods including XRF, XRD, EPMA and synchrotron-based XAS. Results were then correlated with optical microscopy and hand specimen identification to establish any relevant associated mineralogical phases and/or textures. This represents a more systematic approach to identification of high-P ore components based on particle and goethite type and texture. The information can then provide the basis for more targeted P-removal strategies factoring in the relationship between particle/ore texture and phosphorus deportment

At a regional scale, the Otago Schist has been divided into textural zones, metamorphic zones, structural transposition zones, and terranes and lithologic associations. Each of these subdivisions reveals aspects of the internal structure of the lithologically monotonous Otago Schist but, to date, a map of the schist derived directly from structural data has not been made. In the present study, digitised structural data from the QMAP GIS were used to make a form line map of Schist foliation which, in turn (and using certain non-unique guiding assumptions), was used to construct a provisional foliation thickness map of the Otago Schist. Contours of dominant foliation (Sp) thickness have been drawn from 4 kIn above to 16 km below the reference level of the Caples-Torlesse terrane boundary in the schist structural pile. A recent revision of the Otago Schist textural zone classification has shown that the grain size of metamorphic white micas increases progressively with textural grade. There also appears to be a correlation between schist mica grain size and foliation thickness. Using mica grain size, it may eventually be feasible to establish the vertical structural position of samples in greenschist facies parts of the schist pile to a precision of ¦ 1 km or better, even if they are in inliers or fault-bounded blocks. Foliation thickness and mica grain size are thus potentially useful tools for research and exploration in the Otago Schist in that they assist with structural interpolation and extrapolation. Even at this early stage of application they can be used to provide hitherto unobtainable, semi-quantitative estimates of displacement on Mesozoic and Cenozoic faults and folds.

Located in downtown New York City, this project necessitated an innovative conveyor design for successful muck removal. This paper will discuss the technical challenges and engineering solutions of the muck transport system which consists of every commonly recognized version of a belt conveyor. The elaborate system includes a TBM conveyor integral to the back-up system, a wall-mounted extensible conveyor, a crown-mounted transfer conveyor, a floor-mounted fixed-length conveyor, a pocket-belt vertical conveyor, three cascading overland conveyors, and one radial stacker. The most challenging design element was an over-land conveyor featuring a box truss for muck transportation over Northern Boulevard while simultaneously going under the Queens Plaza railroad viaduct. An overview of the project is provided along with the following topics: developing final plans from the proposal concept, interfacing with existing works, communication with the joint venture, and complying with local regulations.

Ammonia present in a variety of mine/mill waste waters was almost completely oxidized to nitrogen by chloride mediated electro-oxidation. A closed circuit operation of preconcentration of ammonia on a suitable adsorbent (e.g. zeolite or a resin) followed by brine stripping of ammonia and electrolysis of the strip liquor seems to have sound technical, economic and environmental merits. The removal of ammonia, cyanide, cyanate or thiocyanate from a mine/mill waste water (e.g. gold mill), either individually or collectively, is also feasible by chloride mediated electro-oxidation technique. Further R&D investigations are necessary for the development of a closed circuit operation for the removal of ammonia, cyanide and thiocyanate; and also to obtain technical data for process cost estimates

Newmont has been on a focused path of improving operations for many years. After the merger of Newmont and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Newmont created significant synergies of over $50million per year in Nevada, primarily through optimal ore movements and consolidation of various functions. During the current period of low gold and copper prices, Newmont has refocused its efforts on efficient operations worldwide. This paper will describe the methods and programs that continue to be implemented at Newmont's many mine facilities in Nevada. Newmont has used a combination of computer technology, optimal use of infrastructures, procurement strategies, functional consolidation, enhanced mine planning and a variety of available metallurgical processing options to decrease the cost of operations and increase profitability.

Sylvia Whitehead (Petrologist, The Broken Hill Propriety Co. Ltd., Melbourne, Australia) — Examination of thin sections of jaspilites from numerous banded iron formations in Australia has revealed no evidence to suggest that silicate minerals have formed by reaction between magnetite and silica. Textural relations indicate that part of the magnetite crystallized very early in the history of the rocks, probably during diagenesis, and remained stable under conditions of metamorphism altering only to hematite or limonite under conditions of oxidation and weathering. Many jaspilites also contain later magnetite which is almost certainly of metamorphic origin. Wherever magnetite is present in quartz rich bands containing little or no silicate or carbonate, it is very fine grained and occurs generally as isolated, well formed octahedral crystals or as small crystalline aggregates. These show no evidence of corrosion or reaction with the quartz even in rocks where adjacent bands contain silicate minerals of moderate to high metamorphic grade. "Mine planning software continues to be an important factor when it comes to the development of the South African mining industry. To contribute to this development, a new methodology to define and measure mine planning software utilization in the South African coal mining sector within an evolving data-set framework was developed. An initial data-set showing the mine planning software providers, their corresponding software solutions, as well as the software capabilities and information on the number of licences was collected and compiled in 2012 in an online database for software utilized in the South African mining industry. Details of the database development and implementation were published in the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 2013. In 2014 the data-set was updated with additional and new information.In this paper, using the 2012 and 2014 time-stamps, a methodology for estimating the software utilization is developed. In this methodology, three variables: commodity, functionality, and time factor are used to define and measure the software utilization in order to ultimately inform decision making strategies for software utilization. Utilization in the coal sector was measured according to six different functionalities, namely Geological Data Management, Geological Modelling and Resource Estimation, Design and Layout, Scheduling, Financial Valuation and Optimization. The methodology is useful for stakeholders reviewing existing software combinations or intending to purchase new software in the near future and wanting to estimate the comparative attractiveness of a certain software package. These stakeholders include mining companies, consulting companies, educational institutions, and software providers. The work presented in this paper is part of a PhD research study in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand."

SUMMARY The Witwatersrand quartzites in which South African gold mining operations are moat exclusively conducted, are notoriously difficult and costly to drill. Despite this situation, however, with the high cost of developing new mines and extending existing mines, together with the rising cost of labour and mining problems resulting from the ever-increasing depths of workings, the demand for raise-boring in these formations is increasing rapidly. Not only is the demand for raises and shafts increasing, but also the length and size of these excavations. Raise-boring studies carried out in South African gold mines have indicated that increased penetration rates and possibly reduced costs could be obtained if higher thrusts were available at the reaming head. Until fairly recently there has been no raise-boring machine suitable for underground use that possessed the thrust and torque characteristics necessary to achieve high penetration rates in hard abrasive quartzite formations and the cutters available were not really developed for high loading. In response to these requirements a raise-borer, the Robbins 83R was designed and built in Seattle, U.S.A. for the Anglo American Corporation. This machine is operating in South African gold mines and is currently being used at a depth of 12 000 ft below surface in one of the. Group's mines. The initial raises bored have substantiated that increased penetration is attainable at high thrust and it is now apparent that the machine is sufficiently versatile to drill raises of up to 12 ft in diameter in quartzite formation over a length of 2 000 ft.

The use of machine vision in the monitoring and control of metallurgical plants has become a very attractive option in the last decade, especially since computing power has increased drastically in the last few years. The use of cameras as a non-intrusive measurement mechanism not only holds the promise of uncomplicated sampling but could provide more consistent monitoring, as well as assistance in decision making and operator and metallurgist training. Although the very first applications of machine vision were in the platinum industry, no automated process control has been developed for platinum group metals (PGMs) as yet. One of the reasons is that to date froth features could not be related to key performance indicators, such as froth grade and recovery. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted on a laboratory-scale platinum froth flotation cell in an effort to determine the relationship between the platinum grade and a combined set of image features and process conditions. A fractional factorial design of experiments was conducted, investigating 6 process conditions, namely air flow rate (x1), pulp level (x2), collector dosage (x3), activator dosage (x4), frother dosage (x5) and depressant dosage(x6), each at levels. Videos were recorded and analysed to extract 20 texture features from each image. By using artificial neural networks (ANN), the nonlinear relationship between the image variables and process conditions and the froth flotation grades could be established. Positive results indicate that the addition of image features to process conditions could be used as sufficient input into advanced model based control systems for flotation plants. Though many mining and mineral processing companies have embraced the principles of sustainable development (SD), there is still a significant challenge of applying these in a practical sense, either in plant design or as part of day-to-day operations. The high-level nature of sustainability concepts often do not translate easily into workable activities or business case evaluations. This makes it difficult for engineers and company decision makers to understand whether their actions are making a contribution to sustainable development and a long-term business case. While several organisations have their own SD tools that can, to a degree, help identify these opportunities, they are largely ad-hoc and lack the necessary thoroughness to defensibly value these opportunities. Recognising these serious shortcomings, the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) has undertaken the development and trial applications of SUSOP« (SUStainable OPerations), a new concept that is somewhat analogous to HAZOP and the wider risk and safety frameworks used in projects today. The key goal of the SUSOP« research project is to produce a holistic, systematic and rigorous framework for project development, capturing, recording and evaluating SD opportunities and constraints against a chosen sustainability structure (eg Five Capitals). SUSOP« is being developed through an iterative process with input from research institutions and engineering companies. This integrated approach ensures that SUSOP«, in its final form, will have the academic rigour and industry realism required to assist the resource sector contribute to societal sustainability by embedding the concepts and processes into the design and operation of their assets in a meaningful and practical manner. SUSOP« has created much traction with both engineering companies and mining and minerals operators. This conference paper presents an overview of the SUSOP« framework and its current suite of processes as well as highlighting, through practical case studies, its capability to incorporate SD considerations at different phases of an engineering project's development.

In 1981 and 1985-1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted orientation studies of marine placer platinum-group metals (PGM). PGM are derived from the Goodnews Bay ultramafic complex and magnetic surveys show that the complex extends offshore at least four mi. The present seafloor was an emergent foreland as recently as 8000 years ago. High-energy ocean processes are transporting and depositing sediment such that PGM-bearing materials are reworked and later masked by barren littoral drift. Exploration targets include 1) placers formed since present transgression began, and 2) ancient marine and drowned fluvial deposits. Additionally, there is evidence of PGM solution transport and accretion. At least minor values of PGM in Recent lag-type placers and possible submarine strands are concentrated along an offshore scarp incised through glacial deposits into the preglacial surface between Flat Cape and Red Mountain. Other Recent PGM-bearing features include Flat Cape shoal, Chagvan Bay, Salmon River delta, and modern beaches. Ancient placers include possible N-S fluvial systems 2 to 3 mi offshore, a nearshore scarp 50 ft below sea level, and strands adjacent to projected ultramafic bedrock slopes. The existance of ancient placers is dependent on depth of glacial erosion. SEM studies show PGM are principally isoferroplatinum and osmiridium, with minor sperrylite, moncheite, and platiniridium. Gold is a co-product, and concentrates comprise chromite, ilmenite, and magnetite. Beneficiation tests successfully concentrated precious metals from natural blacksand accumulations, but failed to concentrate low-grade lag gravels.

The paper briefly des- cribes the principles of efficient feeding and discusses the common types of feeders under practice. The concentration of Mt. Morgan sulphide ore has always been attended by serious loss of gold. Until recently, with a simple selective flotation flowsheet, even the lowest grade of ore milled-about 2 dwt. per long ton-thislloss was 0·9 dwt., whilst for average to high-grade ore, 3·5 to 5 dwt., the figure was 1·5 to 2·0 dwt. Early in 1937 it was decided to equip the research laboratory for an investigation into the condition and location of the escaping gold and the physical and mineralogical barriers preventing its recovery.With the completion of: this equipment in July 1937, trial and error testing, which had been explored to exhaustion, was abandoned and a five months' research programme mapped out and commenced. Based on the knowledge so gained, a flowsheet combining primary desliming, bulk flotation of the natural slime, selective flotation of the deslimed fraction, and cyanidation of the selective flotation tailing was drafted and tried with encouraging results in a 70-lb. per hour pilot plant. This flowsheet, modified to meet current circumstances, is being dove-tailed into the existing 1,500-ton sulphide ore concentrator, though the cyanidation treatment is actually carried out in the oxidized ore mill, to which the flotation tails are pumped.RESEARCH EQUIPMENT(1) Five tube elutriator (Fig. 1) t built in the company's workshop.

To allow recovery of gold values from ore which cannot be economically processed by the mill, Pinson Mining Company has developed a run-of-mine heap leaching facility. In order to estimate production scale recovery rates, reagent consumption and percolation problems, a series of pilot scale tests were performed. These tests typically consisted of 3,630 metric tons (mt) (4,000 tons) leach ore at a grade of .94 to 1.56 grams per metric ton (g/mt) (.03 to .05 oz.) Au/Ton. Test heaps were loader stacked to approximately 4.3 meters (14 feet) high. Information from these pilot scale tests was employed in the design and construction of the production scale facility. Parameters such as spray rate, leach cycle, sprinkler placement, and barren solution chemistry were determined by the pilot tests.

The environmental impact of solid waste materials is closely linked to their potential to produce a hazardous leachate once deposited in a landfill. This potential is conventionally assessed with simple laboratory batch leach tests, which find more and more frequent application also in the minerals and metals industry. Such tests are intended to help distinguish between high and low risk wastes, but are completely unsuitable to allow quantitative prediction or modelling of the long-term leachate generation potential. In the present approach the leachate generation process is perceived as a combination of bulk convective transport, stagnant zone and inner particle diffusion, as well as reaction kinetic effects. Model equations are formulated accordingly. A modelling frame work, WASTESIM, has been developed at UCT, which allows flexible combination of the model components and simulation of leach scenarios. Quantitative model parameters are obtained from a systematic laboratory study on the waste material in question. The combined assessment and modelling approach is demonstrated with a study on Cr (VI) leaching from a ferro-chromium slag material. Although not straightforward, the approach is particularly useful in determining long-term liabilities in the context of waste disposal sites with considerably more reliability than has previously been possible. This paper reports the results of a study to determine the effect of process control agent (PCA) on the characteristics of Ti-Mg powders during milling. It has been shown that a 2% increase in PCA content leads to up to a 40% increase in yield of the milled powder but reduces the kinetics of the mechanical alloying process. The introduction of 4% PCA decreases the mean powder particle size by up to 30%, whereas 6% PCA increases the mean particle size by up to 230%. The characteristics of the milled powders will be discussed in relation to the role of PCA in the milling process. Keywords Titanium?magnesium, mechanical alloying, PCA.
