The Mont Reed iron ore deposit, owned by ArcelorMittal, is situated approximately 140 km southwest of the Mont-Wright mine in the southern region of the Labrador Trough, Canada. Acquired by Québec Cartier Mining (QCM) in the 1960s, the Mont Reed mining property has remained unexploited due to the complex nature of the ore in the area. However, during the last years ArcelorMittal’s R&D team has been dedicated to developing a process to beneficiate the Mont Reed ore and produce high-quality pellet feed suitable for direct reduction furnaces. Extensive research revealed that achieving a good liberation degree of particles required grinding the material below 75 μm (P80 of 53 μm). To find the most effective technology for this task, a detailed comparison between ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding was conducted. Both grinding technologies underwent detailed testing in bench-scale experiments. The ground products were comprehensively characterised, including size distribution analysis and chemical analysis per size fraction. Additionally, liberation analysis was performed using an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM). To determine the grinding specific energy, a method previously developed at Samarco (Brazil) for fine grinding of iron ores was employed. Furthermore, magnetic separation and flotation tests were conducted on the ground products. After a thorough evaluation of all the results, it was observed that both ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding produced samples with similar physical characteristics. However, the vertical mill demonstrated higher efficiency in grinding the material. To conclude the study, an economic evaluation was conducted for both options considering various factors. Overall, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team’s dedicated efforts have brought them closer to unlocking the potential of the Mont Reed ore deposit and paving the way for its future utilisation to the production of high-quality pellet feed.

The mines of The Tennessee Copper Co. are in the Ducktown Basin, in southeastern Tennessee. The ore is a heavy sulphide consisting principally of chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite and in places running as high as 95 per cent sulphur and iron. Operating mines are the Burra Burra and Eureka. Development ' of the Boyd ore body was started in 1940. Late in 1939 the decision was made to change from fuse and cap to all electric blasting and at the same time electric cap lamps were installed to replace carbide. These changes were made to improve the safety and working conditions in the mines. Both the Bureau of Mines and explosives manufacturers recommended electric blasting as a safety measure. Until that rime, electric blasting had been used only for shaft sinking and in places where it was absolutely essential for safety. Very few men had had experience in this type of blasting, as the places where it was required were those that also required direct supervision. It was necessary for the mining staff to work out methods, procedure, and equipment to be used. In this they were ably assisted by representatives of the explosives manufacturers. Many mistakes were made and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the original plan and installation, show the major difficulties encountered. the remedies applied, and present the practices now being followed. Comparison of costs of the two methods will also be discussed. About six months were required to make the change and eliminate fuse and cap blasting entirely. The first electric blasting stations were installed in November 1939 and the last fuse was taken underground in May 1940. A very unusual condition forced the use of fuse for a short time in one heading after May, but that will be discussed later. Original Equipment and Installation A power line is generally recommended as a source of current where permanent blasting stations are used. The plan worked out for electric blasting was to tap 220-volt alternating-current lines when they were available and use 250-volt direct current from the trolley wire at all other places. A blasting machine would be available at each shaft for places where there were no regular blasting stations and could be used if a regular station should fail. The equipment decided on was No. 16 duplex reinforced lamp cord for lines to within about 50 ft. of the working place and No. 20 lead wire from that point to the shots. An open double-pole, double-throw switch with slate base was put in the circuit, so connected that the down position would close the line to the shots 2nd the up position would connect it to the Iine from the power contactor. This switch was located in the circuit as close to the blast as was safe (should the shots explode when it was placed in the shooting

"At the request of the Anthracite Institute, the United States Bureau of Mines during February, March, and April 1935, made a field survey of commercial anthracite shipped from collieries scattered throughout the Anthracite regions. In all, 268 samples were taken at 41 breakers from Carbondale at the northern end of the field to Pottsville at the south. These collieries ship approximately 50 percent of the industry’s total production. Low-frequency mechanical damping measurements were made to investigate internal friction in Fe-A1 alloys. The atomic ordering of the Fe-A1 system strongly influenced the stress-induced ordering internal friction. Magnetoelastic damping was also encounteyed and was shown to be reduced by the application of a static stress. THIS paper describes some damping experiments made on alloys of Fe and Al. Stress-induced ordering internal friction was measured with samples containing from 9.8 to 31.3 at. pct Al. Aluminum is soluble in a-Fe to about 50 at. pct and forms at least two long-range ordered structures, Fe3Al and Feu.' Stress-induced ordering internal friction is known to occur in many substitutional solid solutions, but few measurements of this damping effect have been made with alloy systems that have pronounced ordering tendencies. LeClair and Lomer developed expressions relating the relaxation strength of the damping process to the degree of atomic ordering and predicted that stress-induced ordering internal friction would be zero with complete ordering.' This concept was confirmed experimentally by Lulay and Wert using the system cd-Mg It is also consistent with the weak stress-induced ordering peaks observed in P -brass by Artman and in 16 wt pct Al Fe-Al by bert.' It was expected, therefore that the ordering characteristics of the system Fe-Al would strongly influence the stress-induced ordering internal friction exhibited by the experimental alloys. SAMPLE PREPARATION The alloys used in this investigation were induction melted under vacuum using high-purity melting stock. The iron was electrolytically refined Plastiron 101 which contained 99.85 wt pct Fe. The aluminum was a special 99.95 pct pure grade supplied by Alcoa. The only other raw material was spectrographically pure graphite which was used in small quantities as a deoxidant. The amount of carbon used was slightly in excess of the amount required to completely deoxidize the melt; this resulted in residual carbon contents of 0.01 to 0.02 pct in the finished alloys. The vacuum cast 2 1/2-in. diam ingots were hot rolled to 5/8-in. diam round bars. Portions of these bars were hot swaged and hot drawn to 0.050-in. diam wire. Straight pieces of the hot drawn wire were slowly heated to a temperature of 1300°C in a He atmosphere. After holding for 4 hr, the samples were allowed to cool in the furnace. This annealing treatment resulted in grain growth in the samples, the final grain size being about the same as the wire diameter. The grain boundaries were oriented perpendicularly to the wire axis, giving a bamboo grain structure. The existence of a preferred orientation could not be detected in these coarse grained samples. If the samples had a fiber structure, this probably would have been the same in all samples because of similar processing, thus the influence of crystal orientation on the relaxation strength would have been similar in all samples. This allows ready comparability and investor understanding of the mining investment vehicle. ASX's mining market has been successful because of the high reporting standards in the JORC Code and the high standards of professionalism and the intellectual capital that has been built up among the participants - the mining professionals, brokers, analysts, mining investors, professional advisers and the market operator. The balance of knowledge and understanding among these participants combined with the competition for capital, contributes to the standards for our mining market in a way that the market operator simply cannot replicate by market rules alone.

The effect of temperature, impurities, and capillarity on the morphology of solid particles in a liquid matrix is investigated. For the NbC-liquid iron system, at least, it is found that those particles which are dissolving will assume a spherical shape; all others will take the equilibrium shape. An aniso-tropic-isotropic transition in the interfacial tension is observed at about 1725°C and is believed to be due to cooperative roughening of the interface on an atomic scale. The presence of boron as an impurity lowers the transition temperature. It is the purpose of this paper to present some observations on the shape of particles in a system consisting of solid particles of nonuniform size in a liquid matrix and to propose an explanation for these observations. Although qualitative only, these observations, which were made largely in the course of a study of particle-growth kinetics,' are presented separately to draw attention to them. They reveal the effect of particle size, temperature, and surface-active impurities on particle shape in the solid NbC-liquid iron system, and are unique in demonstrating for the first time the reversible effect of temperature and impurity concentration on the anisotropy of the energy of the solid-liquid interfaces involved. Some of the changes are readily demonstrated with the few particles whose shapes can be clearly shown in a single photomicrograph, but others are more subtle, and their recognition depends upon some experience and the study of a much larger sample. For this reason, a certain amount of judgment must be acknowledged to underlie their detection, but every effort was made to maintain proper scientific objectivity in evaluating the observations. The observations will be presented first, and then an explanation rationalizing them will be offered. Brief reminders of the relevant theories will be inserted into the discussion at the appropriate points. EXPERIMENTAL The observations were made of the shape of NbC particles dispersed in liquid iron. All specimens were prepared by pressing NbC powder and car- bony1 iron powder treated according to standard powder-metallurgical procedures. Except as noted, all specimens were heated to 1900°C for 1/2 hr. In investigating the effect of temperature, specimens were quenched from 1900°C to various lower temperatures, and held long enough (48 hr) to allow shape changes to be completed. Boron, in the form of amorphous powder, and oxygen, in the form of niobium oxide powder, were added as impurities to some specimens. Nitrogen was introduced into some specimens as an impurity by heat treating the samples under a partial pressure of nitrogen gas. Effect of Temperature. It was first observed that increasing temperature had a marked effect in rounding the corners and edges of the particles. At 1900°C the particles are all very nearly spherical and remain so even when the holding time is extended to 48 hr. As can be seen from Fig. 1, there is virtually no evidence of the presence of low-index planes. At 1300°C, however, most of the particles are prismatic with very slightly rounded edges and corners, Fig. 2. (In making these shape comparisons, attention should be focused on the larger particles, even though the smaller ones would be expected to be the first to change shape, owing to the shorter diffusion distances involved. THE rapid increase in cost of discovering new orebodies by churn drilling in the Tri-State district has led to some attempts to lessen the expense by using geophysical methods. Electrical prospecting was tried three or four years ago, but no successful results were recorded. In 1926, the Federal Mining and Smelting Co. engaged the North American Exploration Co., of Houston, Texas, to make some tests with the torsion balance. At first, it was thought that the most favorable conditions for discovery of ore deposits with the torsion balance would be in locations where the ore was known to occur at rather shallow depths, FIG. 1.-CROSS-SECTION OF DUENWEG LEASE. therefore the first trial was made at Duenweg, east of Joplin, where some zinc ore had been developed at a depth of 130 ft. The gravity gradients at 61 stations on a tract of about seventeen acres indicated plainly one large zone of maximum gravity and a smaller narrow zone of minimum gravity. Fourteen churn-drill holes, half of which struck ore, show that all the ore found was located outside the zones of maximum and minimum gravity. In the zone of maximum gravity the limestone beds were closest to the surface, and the first chert beds encountered were at the greatest depth. The results (shown in Table 1) indicated that the gravity of the limestone was greater than the gravity of the fractured chert together with its orebodies, and probably also greater than the bouldery soil and clay on top of the limestone. A cross-section of the Duenweg lease is shown in Fig. 1.

Current metallurgical processes lack selective and efficient REE recovery from aqueous leach liquors. Antisolvent crystallisation is used to selectively recover pure inorganic salts from aqueous solutions without excessive chemical use in ambient conditions. Yttrium sulfate octahydrate (Y2(SO4)3.8H2O) was used as a representative rare earth salt to investigate the effect of antisolvent selection on the crystal morphology and size distribution of the final crystalline product produced through antisolvent crystallisation. The antisolvents of choice were short length alcohols that are water miscible i.e. methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and t-butanol. All experimental parameters except the type of antisolvent were kept constant under isothermal conditions. The large reduction in solubility of the salt by the antisolvent creates high supersaturations. This leads to high product yields as observed in this study at > 91%. In general, a variety of morphologies were successfully formed in each individual alcohol including; rods, plates, prismatic cubes and starburst clusters. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that Y2(SO4)3.8H2O was the only species present for all final products. There was a change observed from the starburst and rod structures for the shorter alcohols towards prismatic cubes for the longer alcohols due to different strengths in the solute-antisolvent interaction at the crystal growth faces. The crystal sizes increased with an increase in the alcohol chain length because of the lower supersaturation conditions due to a limit in the mass transfer induced by the bulkier alcohol structure. In conclusion, it has been shown that the particle morphology and size can be greatly affected by the selection of antisolvent even under high supersaturation conditions, contributing to understanding the effect of different antisolvents on the final particle characteristics. The engineering of favoured product characteristics can therefore be achieved by antisolvent crystallisation, presenting a viable alternative process for the recovery of REE. Activities of lead in Pt-Pb and Pd-Pb melts in the temperature range of 800° to 1200°C have been detev-mined from electromotive-. force measurements 202th the cells Both systems display strong negative deviations from Raoult's law. The data obtained with cell [1] were combined with available data on the activity of PbO in silica-satuvaterl PbO-SbO2 melts to calculate the standard free cnergy of formation 01- liquid PbO. FREE energies of formation of oxides and activities of components in metal and oxide melts can be determined with galvanic cells consisting of a metal phase, an electrolyte containing the oxide of one of the components of the metal phase, and an oxygen electrode. This technique has been used previously to measure the standard free energy of formation of solid sio2, 1 and activities in Fe-si, CO-si,2 Ni-Si,2 and CaO-P2O5 3 melts. The present paper reports activities in Pt-Pb and Pd-Pb melts as measured with the same experimental technique. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD General Considerations. The following cells were used: Pbl (PbO-SiO2)liquid, SiO2 Pt-Pb 1 (PbO-SiOz)liquid, SiO2solidO2 [2] Pd-Pb (PbO-SiOz)liquid, SiO2solid O2 [3] Liquid alloy and' oxide melt were contained together in a silica glass crucible of essentially the same design as described previously.1'2 The PbO-SiO2 melts are ionic conductors.' During the experiment, the silica glass crystalizes in a layer adjacent to the electrolyte. The electrolyte equilibrates with solid silica and hence attains the composition of the Si02-liquidus curve in the system PbO-SiO2 at any particular temperature. Molybdenum wires were used to establish contact with the liquid metal. The oxygen electrode, which reaches the surface of the PbO-SiO, electrolyte from above, consists of a platinum wire inserted into a ceramic tube and provided with a 2-mm-diam platinum bead at its end. Gas of known oxygen partial pressure (pure oxygen of 1 atm: air, or N2 with 1.04 pct 0,) is blown through the ceramic tube onto the surface of the electrolyte. The cell reaction is Pb (metal) + 1/2O2 (gas) = PbO (electrolyte) [4] No oxidation of platinum or palladium ("displacement reaction") occurs. This is to be expected from the noble character of platinum and palladium, but was also shown experimentally, as described in the next section. The galvanic electromotive force of the cell is given by where AG is the change in free energy for Reaction [4], E(=2) is the number of electrical equivalents necessary to form 1 mole of PbO, and F is the Faraday constant. Formula [5] is valid only if no junction potential exists within the electrolyte. Junction potentials occur only when the compositions of the electrolyte are markedly different at the electrodes. Such differences are negligible in the PbO-SiO, electrolyte, as shown in the next section. Since molybdenum contact leads are used, appropriate corrections were made on the measured electromotive forces to account for the thermoelectric effect of the Mo-Pt couple. The thermoelec-tromotive forces were measured separately with a Mo-Pt couple, and were found to vary linearly from 19 mv at 740°C to 40 mv at 1310°C with molybdenum being positive and platinum negative (cold junction at 25°C). Extrapolation of these values to higher temperatures yields values which are in satisfactory agreement with those obtained previously in the temperature range 1440° to 1630°c.1,2 The change in free energy for Reaction [4] is expressed as where chemical potentials of the species. The value of Australia's education services exports increased to over $15 billion dollars in 2009, placing education as the third overall export earner behind coal and iron ore; however there are concerns over the impact of emerging policies on the future of both the industry and the provision of mining education. Policies have impacts on the growing number of international rankings (or league tables) of mining jurisdictions and universities. A high position in such rankings might be used as a measure of perceived quality with benefit to those at the top and to the detriment to those lower down.    Top performing companies in the relatively new domain of sustainability have been shown to achieve better financial performance than their industry competitors, assisting them in attracting top quality committed staff, hence positioning themselves well for the future. The world's mining companies, jurisdictions and universities are now ranked with results in the public domain. It is argued as to the validity of the data or perceptions used in such rankings, but there is no doubt they are influential in determining the flow of dollars around the globe. By investing your pension fund assets in the shares of the top performing companies, by placing your exploration dollars in a country at the top of such a list of attractive jurisdictions, attending or recruiting from a University at the top of the rankings - risk must surely be reduced?   While savings and risk reduction can undoubtedly result from the introduction of new technologies developed through appropriate R&D (the other core activity of a university), the maintenance of a very high level of exploration and production performance through dedicated highly skilled staff every hour of every day quietly improves financial performance, while avoiding safety, environmental and/or community incidents (ie protects the 'triple bottom line'). As always risk reduction comes down to enabling quality people to do a quality job - through the actions of such people we can sustain the global mining industry and secure our social license to operate. However, there is global concern over where the numbers of such people, including those with the recently required skills in sustainability, are going to come from.   This presentation will discuss some of the complexity and interactions involved in the development of such rankings, the dangers inherent in their simple acceptance and use, plus indicate some of the directions mining educators might take to sustain and increase the supply of quality graduates to the global mining industry. "Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel Project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Québec. The nickel and copper concentrates are filtered by plate and frame filter presses, and are transported 100km north to Deception Bay by truck. As the site is situated in the far north, extreme weather can be detrimental to production: roads can close for significant periods of time, resulting in the concentrator using all its storage capacity. During the winter of 2017, this accounted for over 100 hours of unplanned mill downtime. Different solutions to this problem were evaluated and the most economically viable combination of solutions was determined to be the use of concentrate storage containers and upgrading the plate size of the existing nickel filter press. By satisfying new, increased utility requirements, the cycle times would not change, but produce 30% more filter cake. Simulations were developed to determine the number of concentrate containers needed in conjunction with the upgraded press to eliminate unplanned downtime due to road closures and secure production through the winter. This paper summarises these simulations, the commissioning and start-up of the upgraded filter press, container loading procedures, and how this was put together to achieve a record 2018 winter season with a 90 percent reduction in downtime. The payback period of the project was 4 months. A specialised side-tipping trailer emptied the containers during the fall of 2018.INTRODUCTION The Nunavik Nickel Project is a nickel/copper mining project located in Nunavik, Québec. The nickel and copper concentrates are stored in stock tanks after thickening and are then filtered by plate and frame filter presses at the concentrator before being transported 100km to the shipping port at Deception Bay by trucks. The region is prone to periods of extreme weather during the winter, with winds that can reach +100km/hr and blizzards that severely limit visibility. The roads to Deception Bay are often affected by this weather, causing closures that last an average of 18hrs and as long as 72hrs. Additionally, there is a 15% chance that road closures occur within 24hrs of the last event. This has been an issue for the concentrator team since start-up in 2013, causing unplanned mill downtime every winter (Table 1) due to filling concentrate storage capacity during prolonged closures of the roads to Deception Bay."

THE formation and growth of intermetallic phase layers is of considerable practical importance to metallurgists interested in diffusion bonding and cementation processes and has been the subject of extensive qualitative investigation. In contrast, it is somewhat surprising that so little quantitative data have been amassed. The need for additional fundamental work was pointed out by Mehl in 1936,' and persists to a large extent to the present day. The early studies have been reviewed by Rhines,2 and his conclusions have been summarized by Lustman and Mehl3 substantially as follows: 1) All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two metals; however, in some cases, certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. 2) The isothermal growth of intermetallic phases generally obeys a simple parabolic equation of the form X2 = Kt, where x is the thickness of the alloy layer, K the temperature dependent reaction rate constant, and t the time. 3) The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation k = Ae -Q/RT , where k is the parabolic rate constant, A, a temperature independent constant, Q the heat of activation for the process, R the gas constant, and T the absolute temperature. Subsequently, Lustman and Mehl made a quantitative study of the laws of growth in intermediate layers in a number of binary systems, in which one of the components was either zinc or cadmium, and the other component was one of the following: nickel, copper, silver, cobalt, gold, iron, or Monel metal; the interdiffusion times used were for the most part less than 24 hr. It was found that the simple parabolic law was not obeyed in general, but that a generalized parabolic law of the form xn = kt was valid, where n was a temperature dependent constant; also,

Sintered UO, samples were leached in sulfuric acid solutions of various concentrations. A pressurized system was used so that it was possible to investigate the kinetics of the reaction to 270°C with oxygen overpressures as high as 900 psi. The rate was observed to be a function of the concentration of hydrogen ions and directly proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen. Evidences are presented which indicate that a UO2 surface site reacts with a molecule of water to form a hydroxyl complex which in turn can dissociate with the characteristics of a weak acid. A rate determining step has been proposed which involves the reaction between an oxygen molecule and the hydroxyl complex on the surface of UO,. ThE 2 principal methods for uranium dissolution are carbonate and acid leaching. The sulfuric acid leach is the more popular and is used for the treatment of the majority of the ores of Africa, Canada, and the United States. Low recoveries in basic leach circuits led investigators at the University of British columbia1 to study leaching of uranium ores in pressurized vessels. Early in the study of dissolution of uranium it was found that only uranium in the hexava-lent state could be leached in acid or basic circuits. Therefore, the use of oxygen over-pressure in an autoclave offered an interesting approach to solving the low recovery problems of carbonate leaching. UO, was used in this study because it could be obtained in high purity and also because it is representative of the most refractory of the primary uranium minerals. A pressurized system was used to provide a means whereby important temperature and pressure parameters could be varied for the evaluation of the kinetic processes. The mechanism for the dissolution of UO2 should be similar for any of the uraninite type minerals. At the present all of the kinetic studies that have been conducted have been in carbonate media. Peters and Halpern2 carried out a kinetic study of the leaching of pitchblende. Their specimens were pitchblende ores selected on the basis of high grade and homogeneity. Pearson and wadsworth3 conducted a kinetic study of the dissolution of UO2 in carbonate solutions with results very similar to those obtained by Peters and Halpern. EXPERIMENTAL The UO2 as received* was found by spectroscopic *Mallinckrodt reagent, supplied by the Atomic Energy Commission. analysis to have a purity of 99.94 pct 0.03. It was ground in a mechanical agate mortar and screened through a 400-mesh sieve. Thin flat disks of UO2 were prepared by pressing the sized powder in a specially constructed die at a total pressure of approximately 25 tons per sq in. The pressed disks were approximately 0.25 cm thick, 1.6 cm diam, and 3.5 g in weight. As pressed, the samples were approximately 65 pct of theoretical density. It was essential that a binder such as poly-vinyl alcohol be added before pressing to prevent formation of cracks when fired. It was found by trial and error that pressed disks sintered close to 1870°C in a hydrogen atmosphere, reach densities between 91 and 91.5 pct of the theoretical density. At this density the samples had no measurable porosity based upon a 2-hr emersion in boiling water. An X-ray examination of these sintered UO2 disks showed them to be identical with the original UO2 received. Reaction of UO2 with the alundum furnace core was prevented by placing molybdenum between the samples and the core according to the method of Corwin and Eyerly.4 Leaching studies were carried out in a specially designed autoclave, the details of which have been presented e1sewhere.6 The main features of the equipment as applied to a kinetic study are: 1) solution samples may be removed during the course of a single run; and 2) temperature and agitation are carefully controlled. "The study of the total utilization of fly ash has involved all of the known technology in the processing of this waste material into useful products. In addition, a complete knowledge of all the possible uses of fly ash and its products in the market area was probably the most important factor in evaluating the theory and practical feasibility of the total utilization of fly ash from a single large supplyLaboratory tests carried out on the separation of fly ash into different fractions were shown to improve its value and utilization. Four main fractions were studied: a fine pozzolanic low-carbon fraction; a coarse fraction for light-weight aggregate production by pelletizing and sintering; a high-iron fraction; and a carbon-rich fraction. The term ""beneficiation"" here refers to a process of separating fly ash into more useful components.Laboratory and pilot sinter strand tests were employed to optimize the sintering capability and the quality of the heat-hardened pellets through a study of the agglomeration cycle in four principal heat zones, under controlled conditions of air flow, temperature and atmosphere, and including the controlled sizing of pellets.The suitability of the heat-hardened pellets as light-weight aggregate was evaluated in test batches of concrete, which were compared with concrete containing commercial lightweight aggregate of established quality.A study of beneficiated fly ash pozzolan as a partial cementitious binder component in normal and high-temperature cured concrete was reported in a paper at the re-cent Second International Fly Ash Symposium.Samples of raw and beneficiated Lakeview ash were compared with samples of other established high-quality fly ash pozzolans. The evaluation indicated the usefulness of beneficiated Lakeview ash as a pozzolan. Economic studies indicated that to accomplish the primary objective of total utilization of any single source of fly ash (in this case. fly ash from the Lakeview Generating Station, producing approximately 400,000 tons per year), a broad knowledge of the technology of various mineral processes was essential.The design of the fly ash processing plant had to be based on the disposal of all the raw fly ash produced by the generating station. This is contrary to the normal design of a processing plant in which raw materials are supplied and produced according to product demand. The design, therefore, had to be of such flexibility as to pro-duce as wide a variety of products as possible, and the ability to market them had to be well researched and understood."

The Act of Congress approved June 25, 1926 (Public Act 424, 69th Congress), authorized joint investigations by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines to determine "the location, extent, and mode of occurrence of potash deposits in the United States." The particular deposits selected for exploration were the extensive rock-salt formations underlying large areas in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico, from which potash salts had been identified in the cuttings and sludges from oil wells drilled with cable tools. The evidence of these sludge samples was qualitative only and beyond definitely proving the presence of potash salts in the salt beds, gave little clue to the possible size, richness, or extent of the potash occurrences.

It is common practice, and even legally required in many jurisdictions, to design two-lane haul roads in open pit mines to three and a half times the widest dimension of the haul trucks operating on the road. In open pit gold mines with high strip ratios, the road width has a significant impact on the economics of a design. It is possible to minimize the flattening of the highwall if the road width is reduced, assuming the width used is not needed to flatten the slopes for geotechnical purposes. With the use of autonomous haulage and pullouts, it may be possible to operate safely and efficiently on a reduced road width of two times the width of the hauling equipment.

Numerous investigatiolls have been carried out to determine the total oxygen present in the basic open-hearth bath and the results of these studies have clearly defined the factors controlling the bath oxidation during the period prior to deoxidation. On the other hand, very little is known concerning any changes in total oxygen content that may occur during deoxidation, tapping and teeming. The need for such additional data is continually becoming more apparent, since there is no strict technical basis for selecting any particular deoxidation practice. Many steels are made for the same purposes and to the same chemical analyses by widely differing practices. Apparently, each practice is satisfactory. However, it would be desirable to establish more definitely the effects and relative merits of the individual practices. Such information could be used to give a definite foundation for evaluating various types of deoxidation. In order to approach this problem, a study was made of the changes effected in the total oxygen content of several grades of steel by representative open-hearth deoxidation practices. To carry out such studies, it was necessary that a reliable testing procedure for determining the oxygen content of the steel bath and the ingot mold be established. Before entering on any extensive testing program, consideration was given to the available methods of obtaining steel samples and analyzing for oxygen. Testing Procedures It has been shown5-9 that in solidified steel oxygen may ekist in combination with iron, manganese, silicon, aluminum, titanium, chromium and carbon, depending upon the amount of these elements in the sample. In molten steel, however, there has been no direct distinction of the various oxides. Accordingly, the total active oxygen in the molten steel bath is designated by the symbol 0. During deoxidation, various oxides may be present either in solution in the molten steel or as solid or liquid inclusions. Any sample taken from the molten steel for oxygen analysis will include both the dissolved and the mechanically included oxygen. Similarly, samples of the solid steel product will also include the two forms of Oxygen' Methods of Samplirzg the Molten Steel Bath In order to obtain a true oxygen analysis from liquid steel, this element must be completely retained in the solidified sample. As early as 1915, Kichlinelo proposed a method for testing molten steel, in which the oxygen combined with some added aluminum. In many parts of the country, electric utilities use spot market coal to make up the difference between the amount of contract coal and the total amount burned. The utilities involved will normally have a structured contract for those companies supplying that spot coal. These contracts will often involve a pricing schedule with bonuses or penalties for coal above or below the specified coal quality goals. Normally, penalties will be assessed on the sulfur, ash, and other coal quality variables. This paper deals with some aspects of the pricing schedule of one of the eastern utilities that buys coal on the spot market. This utility has a number of plants that a supplier can attempt to supply through bidding procedures. The existence of the pricing schedule gives the supplier a number of different options. To the single-mine producer, options are available to send the coal to any demand site and to clean all, part, or none of the coal. In other words, he can ship to a number of different sites and can send different coal qualities to each site depending upon the level of preparation. In addition, the options to deliver blended coal to any given site will provide an additional level of complexity to the problem.
