The Bunga Beds of the Late Devonian - Boyd Volcanic' Complex is a well exposed succession of rhyolite, sedimentary rocks and minor basalt outcropping along the south coast of New South Wales. The sedimentary rocks vary from shallow water basin margin facies, to deep-water basin centre facies, and the majority of .the volcanics are associated with the deep water facies association. The volcanics are dominated by rhyolite domes, lavas and cryptodomes, whose margins are extensively autobrecciated and quench fragmented. In situ pyroclastics represent a very minor volcanic component and are restricted to the remnants of two small doors- top tuff cone successions. Pyroclastic debris is common in the sedimentary succession enclosing the volcanics and was clearly derived from shallow to emergent basin margin areas through mass-flow redeposition. The succession has bearing on the origin of the fragmental component of, the volcanics that host Kuroko- type massive sulphide deposits. The characteristics of these fragmental volcanics are not well documented. We suggest that based on the Bunga Beds,'Kuroko-type volcanic successions are dominated by coherent rhyolite/ felsic lavas and intrusive domes, autobreccias and hyaloclastites, that in situ pyroclastics are rare or lacking, and that redeposited volcanic debris is abundant. Pyroclastic debris is most likely to have been derived from shallow areas marginal to the deep-water volcanic centre that produce the Kuroko-type volcanics and sulphides.

The high- and low-cycle fatigue poperties of MAR-M200 directionally -solidified into columnar-grained and single crystal forms were determined at 1400" and 1700°F. These results were compared with the corresponding properties of conventionally -cast MAR-M200. The low-cycle fatigue lives of the columnar-grained and single crystal materials were similar at both temperatures and were one to two orders of magnitude greater than those of conventionally-cast material. The variations in the fatigue lives among the three forms of MAR-M200 were related to the more rapid rate of intergranular muck propagation compared to that of transgranular propagation. In conventionally-cast MAR-M200, cracks were initiated in grain boundaries and crack popagation occurred rapidly along an almost continuous grain boundary path. In the columnar-grained material, crack initiation occurred on short transverse segments of grain boundaries, but crack propagation was transgranular. The fatigue lives of columnar-grained and single crystal materials were approximately the same because most of the life in both materials was spent in trans-granular propagation. For the directionally -solidified materials, the number of cycles to failure, Nf, can be related to the total strain range, , by: heT = K where n and K are 0.16 and 0.044 at 1400'F and 0.29and 0.098 at 1700, respectively. In addition to intergranular crack initiation in the columnar-grained material, initiation also occurred at we-cracked MC carbides and micropores in both directionally-solidified materials. At 1400°F, fatigue life was reduced with increasing MC carbide size, but at 1700 there was no effect of carbide size. THE creep and stress-rupture properties of conventionally-cast nickel-base superalloys can be greatly improved by directional solidification into either single crystal or columnar-grained forms. The improvement in properties results from a reduction in intergranular cavitation and crack growth in the columnar-grained materials and the complete absence of this fracture mode in the single crystals. This paper describes the effect of grain boundaries on the elevated temperature fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy MAR-M200. The effect of cycling frequency on cracking arid fatigue life and the role of MC carbides and micropores on crack initiation are also emphasized. The fatigue properties of columnar-grained and single crystal MAR-M200 at room tem- perature,4,5 and the change in the mode of fatigue crack propagation with temperature6 have recently been described. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in this study was the nickel-base superalloy MAR-M200, directionally-solidified into columnar-grained and single crystal forms. The columnar grains were approximately 0.5 mm in diam. The nominal composition of these materials in wt pct was 0.15C, 9Cr, 12.5W, loco, 5A1. 2Ti, lCb, 0.05Zr. 0.015B, bal Ni. They were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr. which resulted in 0.2 pct offset yield stresses of 150,000? 144,000, and 95,000 psi at room temperature? 1400°, and 1700°F, respectively. The corresponding elastic moduli parallel to the testing direction were 19.2. 15.0, and 12.5 x 106 psi, respectively. Specimen design, testing procedures and alloy mi-crostructure have been described previously and will only be summarized here. Following the 1600°F aging treatment. MAR-M200 contains an ordered, cuboidal, y' precipitate 0.3 1 on edge, which is coherent with the 1 matrix. The y' precipitate is quite stable; even after testing at 1700°F. the precipitate is only slightly enlarged and its corners somewhat rounded. The alloy also contains a small volume fraction of micropores, and MC carbides. some of which contain preexisting cracks5 formed during casting. These cracks are always parallel to the long dimension of the carbide. Measurement of MC carbide size has been described previously.5 Axial fatigue tests were conducted in air over a wide range of strain amplitudes in both the high - and low-cycle fatigue regions, with specimen lives varying from about 10' to 10' cycles. Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were strain-controlled with strain varied between zero and a maximum tensile value at a frequency of about 2 cpm. High-cycle fatigue (HCF) tests were stress-controlled with the stress varied between 5000 psi and a maximum tensile value less than the yield stress at a frequency of either 10 cps or 0.033 cps (2 cpm). The temperature in the gage section was controlled to 52°F. Specimen axes were within 5 deg of the [001] growth axis of the single crystals and the common [001 ] growth axis of the columnar-grained material. Specimen gage sections were electro polished prior to testing. After the standard heat treatment, three specimens were coated with a typical aluminide coating applied as a slurry. An additional specimen was given the coating heat treatment without actually being coated. In all cases: specimens were reaged at 1600°F for 32 hr after receiving the coating heat treatment at 1975'F for 4 hr.

Surface-tension measurements for liquid Fe-C-Co and Fe-C-Ni alloys were performed by the sesszle-drop technique at 1350o and 1425°C. Cobalt was shown to he more effective than nickel in lowering the surface tension of Fe-C alloys A minimum value for surface tension of 1640 dynes per cm was found in the Fe-C-Co system at a concentration of 1.5 pet C and 12pet Co. Analysis of these measurements in terms of adsorption and desorption behavior indicated that cobalt and nickel lower surface tension in Fe-C alloys by replacing carbon at the liquid-vapor interface. Comparison of results to date for Fe-C liquid alloys has shown that most substitutional-type elements having about the same atomic diameter as iron also have relatively the same influence on surface tension when present in dilute amounts. It has been shown previously that surface-adsorption behavior in liquid Fe-C ternary alloys is related to the manner in which the ternary addition affects the activity of carbon in the bulk solution.' Certain ternary additions, such as chromium, tending to decrease carbon activity cause adsorption of carbon and chromium to the liquid-vapor interface. Additions, such as silicon, increase the carbon activity, resulting in a desorption of carbon and an adsorption of silicon. Both cases were shown to cause a decrease in surface tension due to adsorption. It is the object of this paper, as part of the writers' continuing interest in the effect of alloying additions on the surface tension of Fe-C alloys, to present and discuss surface-tension data on solutions in the ternary systems Fe-C-Co and Fe-C-Ni. Available activity measurements for these systems in the solid state indicate a strong increase in carbon activity when either nickel or cobalt is added to Fe-C alloys.2, 3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloy compositions used are shown in Table I. These alloys were prepared by vacuum melting in stabilized zirconia crucibles and then vacuum casting into cold-steel molds. The nominal analyses for the alloys used in this investigation are given in Table I. Surface tensions and densities were measured by the sessile-drop method4,5 in conjunction with the tables of Bashforth and bdams.' Specimens were prepared by slicing 1/4-in. cubes from the center of the vacuum-cast ingots and grinding the edges of these cubes until their shapes approximated spheres with flat bottoms. Proper handling techniques, including an acetone rinse immediately before use, assured minimum contamination from sources extraneous to the actual melting. For each experimental run a sample was placed on a BeO plaque and positioned and leveled inside a vacuum induction heating apparatus. The sample and plaque arrangement sat inside a molybdenum tube which acted as the susceptor. Diagrams of this apparatus may be found in the literature.= After heating to temperatures just above the liquidus at pressures of the order of 10-4 to 10- 5 mm Hg, photographs of the drop profile were made using its natural thermal radiation as a light source. Some measurements were made with partial pressures (-1 cm Hg) of a mixture of H2 and He gases. The H2-He atmospheres proved to be necessary at higher nickel contents to retard excessive vaporization losses. Chemical analysis for carbon and the ternary addition was performed for each alloy sample after completion of the experimental run.

"Construction works at the Helsinki city sea shoreline requires dredging and handling of contaminated sediments. Most of these soft dredged sediments are regarded as too poor quality material for earth construction purposes. Mass stabilization technology has been applied to improve the technical and environmental properties of the dredged sediment in order to utilize the material in construction. The treatment site presented in this article is placed in the West Harbor where the dredged sediments are disposed in basins, mixed with binders by mass stabilization and transported to utilization sites. The volume of these basins is about 90 000 m3. So far these basins have been used three times during the years 2011-2014. The most applied binder has been cement. Its high price and carbon footprint have encouraged use alternative binders. Other used binder materials include fly ash and end product of desulphurization from coal combustion, and fly ash from combustion of Estonian oil shale. The technical and environmental properties of stabilized sediments have been studies in the laboratory and in situ thoroughly. Some properties of the stabilized sediments which have been studied are: compression strength, modulus, hydraulic conductivity, leaching of contaminants, etc. The leaching test results show that heavy metal leaching is very low with all binder materials tested.1. INTRODUCTIONContaminated marine sedimentsMarine sediments in the coastal areas are often contaminated as a consequence of industrial and port activities, as well as the influence of cities located there. Construction activities and reclamation of shore line require dredging and handling of contaminated sediments since the level of contamination inhibit dumping of dredged sediments into the sea. Based on their technical properties, most of these dredged soft and watery sediments (clay, gyttja, etc.) are regarded as too poor quality material for earth construction purposes. Economic, sustainable and environmentally safe management of contaminated, dredged sediments is a key issue in many construction sites.In the City of Helsinki, mass stabilization technology has been applied to improve the technical properties of the dredged sediments in order to utilize the material in construction. Owing to stabilization / deep mixing / solidification, also the contamination is encapsulated in a monolithic solid of a high structural integrity. Thus, contaminants migration is restricted by the decreased surface area exposed to leaching.The treatment site presented in this article is placed in the West Harbor (a place of Helsinki called Jätkäsaari) where dredged sediments are disposed into stabilization basins, mixed with binders by mass stabilization and then transported to final utilization sites. The location and principle of these basins is presented in Figures 1-4. The overall volume of these four stabilization basins is about 90 000 m3."

Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of respirable coal mine dust causes coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis. Underground coal mine roof bolter operators are more prone to elevated exposure to coal and silica dust. The canopy air curtain (CAC) was developed by NIOSH to protect roof bolter operators from the exposure. The CAC supplies filtered air over the breathing zone of the operator. This dilutes the high coal dust concentrations and provides for an impenetrable air curtain. Many studies have been carried out to improve CAC efficiency. However, field test has shown variable dust control efficiencies indicating rooms to further improve due to the nonuniform airflow distribution across the plenum and ineffective perimeter flow. This study therefore redesigns the CAC with optimized flow distribution that effectively protects roof bolters from coal dust exposures. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to optimize the uniformity of airflow distribution across the plenum to achieve the best possible uniformity. A lab experiment validates the CFD model and confirms the ability of this design to reduce floor dust pickup, prevent external wind infiltration, and offer an improved protection efficiency

In recent years an ever increasing amount of interest has been directed toward research studying the principles and various applications of sonic and supersonic waves. Though still in their early stages of practical development, sonic vibrations are already used in the emulsifi-cation and degasification of liquids. Metals exposed to sonic or ultrasonic vibrations while solidifying show a considerable amount of grain refinement. Often sound waves are applied instead of radiography to test engineering materials for internal cracks and flaws.' In the field of pure research these waves are used in dispersion and also in coagulation of particles or liquids in gaseous or, under certain conditions, in other liquid systems. In the settling and thickening of slurries considerable time is necessary to compress the solid particles and to squeeze out the liquid to obtain as low a dilution (liquid to solid ratio) as possible. Various methods have been developed to increase the amount of coagulation of the very fine solids (colloidal or semicolloidal) and to shorten the over-all time. The addition of small amounts of electrolytes and the warming of the suspension represent merely the more important techniques. Some of the effects of supersonic vibrations have been reported previously. From preliminary studies, therefore, it was hoped that by application of sonic vibrations it would be possible to reduce the time required to thicken such materials to a specific dilution, as well as to thicken to lower ultimate dilutions than could be obtained by quiescent settling alone. By increasing the volume thickened per unit time—i.e., improving the plant efficiency— great savings in equipment and time would be obtained for industrial processes. Also, faster settling rates should result if coagulation of particles could be increased. Experiments have been conducted for a period of several months in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory to study the effect of sonic vibrations on settling of particles of different sizes and concentrations. Apparatus The sedimentation apparatus used in these experiments is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. The essential features are the stationary field coil and the movable voice coil. Both windings are placed around a solid iron core. A leather diaphragm connected to the steel frame holds the voice coil in place. A brass rod is fastened to the voice coil with a metal disk connected to the other end. This disk is sealed to the lucite cylinder with a flexible rubber diaphragm. The lucite tube is 17 in. long; its inner diameter is 2½ in. and the wall thickness is ¼ in. The tube is calibrated on the outside in 10 c.c. divisions for a total of 1000 cubic centimeters.

ALTHOUGH a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes.

"The process of filtrate loss of low solid-phase drilling fluid at different content of polyanionic cellulose is investigated by the standard filtration test. The test results showed that when time of filtration is same, the filtrate volume decreases linearly with the increase of content of polyanionic cellulose. When content of polyanionic cellulose is same, the velocity of filter loss decreases nonlinearly with the increase of time and the velocity of filter loss will reach a stable value. The filtrate volume in 7 to 8 minutes can reach half of the total filtrate volume. At the same time, the velocity of filter loss of drilling fluid decreases nonlinearly with the increase of viscosity. When apparent viscosity is between 3.5~4.15 mPa.s, decrease speed of velocity of filter loss is quick. The results are helpful for characteristics evaluation of filtrate loss of drilling fluid and control of filtrate loss.IntroductionDuring the process of drilling, water of drilling fluid can leakage into stratum, the water can result in instability and collapse of borehole wall. At the same time, the original ratio of drilling fluid will change. The density of drilling fluid will increase, the performance of the drilling fluid will change. Controlling amount of filtration is important to drill successfully. The additives of controlling filtrate loss are mainly two types, particle materials and polymer materials. High-molecular polymer is a kind of high-molecular material, has the adsorption effect, high polymer protection, can improve the advantages of slurry viscosity (Xu,2004 and Dehghanpour,2001). Some scholars carried out some study on the polymer material fluid loss agent in recent years, these study mainly focused on CMC, HEC, MHEC, CMHEC, starch and its derivatives(Zhang,2005 and Chevron,2009).About PAC (polyanionic cellulose) as drilling mud additives, a few of scholars carried out some relevant work. Plank (1992) applied PAC into ordinary freshwater drilling fluid and analyzed temperature stability of freshwater drilling fluid. Bennion (2000) applied PAC into drilling fluid and analyzed effect of polyanionic cellulose on strata inhibitory. Huang (2011) analyzed effect of PAC on properties of the high-density water-based drilling fluid. Mahto (2004) applied PAC into fresh water and salt-water drilling fluid and analyzed effect of PAC on rheological properties of the drilling fluid. Wang (2008) applied PAC into alkaline drilling fluid to study various performance of drilling fluid. PAC is a renewable resource and has good application prospect (Ankara, 2005). So it is very important to understand the effect of PAC on filtration process of drilling fluid.The test was conducted by changing the content of the PAC in drilling fluid. The object of this paper is to understand effect of polyanionic cellulose on filtration process of the low solid-phase drilling fluid."

The study focused on the recovery of vanadium from a Korean vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite (VTM) ore, examining the behaviors of magnetic separation and Na2CO3 roasting-water leaching. Two concentrates were prepared using single-stage dry magnetic separation and three-step wet magnetic separation, resulting in V2O5 grades of 0.8% and 1.0% and major gangue mineral SiO2 contents of 6.5% and 1.7%, respectively. These concentrates were subsequently roasted at 1050 °C with the addition of Na2CO3 and then water-leached at 25 °C. Various stoichiometric ratios of V2O5 to Na2CO3 were tested, ranging from 1:1 to 1:40 of the theoretically required amount. As the amount of Na2CO3 increased, the vanadium leaching efficiency showed fluctuations between 4 and 35% for ratios of 1:1 to 1:10, while it linearly increased from 4 to 82% for ratios of 1:10 to 1:40 in the leaching of the low-grade concentrate. In contrast, the leaching efficiency increased from 47 to 74% for ratios of 1:1 to 1:8 and then sharply rose to 84% at a ratio of 1:10 in the leaching of the high-grade concentrate. Subsequently, it reached a plateau of 92 to 94% for ratios of 1:20 to 1:40. The difference in leaching efficiency was primarily due to the reaction of gangue minerals with Na2CO3, which hindered vanadium leaching from the VTM concentrates. This hindrance was notably more pronounced in the low-grade concentrate with the lower salt ratio, as the gangue minerals exhibited a preference for consuming Na2CO3 over vanadium. The mineral formation was analyzed in detail using XRD and MLA to shed light on the mechanism of different vanadium leaching behavior depending on the concentrate grade and vanadium to salt ratio. Based on the results of this study, it is evident that applying a proper magnetic separation procedure is significant to achieving satisfactory vanadium recovery with less salt amount by removing gangue minerals ahead.

B.P.J. Stevens contributes a further response to the authors' earlier lengthy reply regarding their paper published in Trans.IMM B, vol.104, 1995, p.B1-B17, contending that despite the positive contribution clarifying their interpretations they perpetrate some misquotations, attempt to rewrite history and fail to understand the New South Wales Geological Survey's stratigraphic interpretation of the Broken Hill area. The paper's authors, in their further response, robustly defend their views, insisting that Stevens tends to misquote or take out of context what they have written and reiterating their findings that Zn is tectonically stacked above Pb at the north end of the orebody, that the written development of the stratigraphic interpretation is as they have stated, that shearing has attenuated or removed fold limbs in the Broken Hill block and that the 1:100 000 stratigraphic map reveals that magnetic anomalies are oblique to and truncated by the Geological Survey's interpreted stratigraphic boundaries

The understanding of public debates over mineral exploration and mining largely originates from exceptional situations such as mining accidents of conflicts. Less is known about how mining is portrayed and understood under more conventional settings. What storylines dominate the local day-to-day public debate? This article presents results from a comparative case study focusing on newspaper coverage of mineral exploration and mining in three European countries representing different geological and socio-economic contexts. Newspaper articles from the Geyer-Erzgebirge region in Germany, the Andalusia region in Spain, and Northern Finland are studied. The sample looks into the period between September 2018 and February 2020 and shows that regional newspapers report about mining issues relatively intensively even in the absence of major accidents or other media events causing peaks of attention. The tone of the articles is generally neutral to positive towards mining activities, reflecting the specific local settings, historical experiences, and future expectations. Despite the different contexts of the three countries, there were considerable similarities to the topics highlighted, including common themes of mining revival, mining events and social interaction, history of mining, and damages related to mining. Past, present, and future employment opportunities related directly or indirectly to the mining sector are key storylines. When it comes to the analysis of gold bearing ore, there are literally dozens of variables that contribute to the final "true value" of a given sample. Initial sample selection, splitting size and method, inherent nugget gold, pulverization method, and analytical method variations are but a few. However, it seems that the inherent nugget gold particle is targeted as the primary reason for intra and inter-laboratory variations in assay. The following study will show that this is not always the case. A series of tests were undertaken for the Aurora Partnership-Aurora Project to solve inter-laboratory variations in the analyses of blasthole cuttings. Initial concern was centered on the probability that free gold occurrence was resulting in erratic results for the mine's cyanide shake assays and outside laboratory fire assays. Comparison of fire assay and cyanide shake assay was sporadically consistent with previously demonstrated extraction percentage for the cyanide method. The goal was to delineate the factors that ensure consistency in analyses; implement, where needed, Good Laboratory Practices; and reestablish acceptable analytical method correlation.

Activities of COO in the three solid solution series COO-MgO, COO-MnO, and COO-"FeO" have been determined at 1200°C by equilibrating oxide samples with a metal phase (cobalt or a Co-Fe alloy) in atmospheres of known oxygen activities. The systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO are ideal, within limits of experimental error, whereas the system COO-"FeO" shows a slight positive deviation from ideality at the temperature of this investigation. KNOWLEDGE of activities of oxide components in solid solutions is necessary for the calculation of the cation distribution among coexisting oxide phases in many important metallurgical, ceramic, and geochemical systems. Very few activity-composition curves are available for such systems at the present time. A start on the prodigious job of obtaining such data has been made by studies of solid solutions with simple sodium chloride type structure containing NiO or "FeO" as a component.1-3 The present paper describes similar studies for solid solutions with sodium chloride type structure containing COO as a component. For the systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO, the activity solid solution is determined by the equation Here po and are the oxygen activities of the gas phase in equilibrium with the phase assemblages metallic cobalt plus oxide solid solution, and metallic cobalt plus pure COO, respectively. In the system CoO-"Fe07', the metal phase is a Co-Fe alloy rather than pure cobalt. In this case the activity of COO in the oxide solid solution is calculated from the equation where a& is the activity of cobalt in the metal phase. Because the system Co-Fe is close to ideal4 and the metal phase appearing in the present work contains less iron than cobalt even at the lowest COO concentrations of the oxide phases used may be set equal to N . The study described in this paper is first centered on the determination of the physical properties (gravimetric, magnetic, electrical, and electromagnetic) o f metamorphosed iron ores of the Carol Lake-Labrador City District. Different geophysical surveys available in the Carol Lake-Wabush area were interpreted quantitatively and the dimensions, attitude, and tonnage of the ore bodies investigated were determined. A geophysical-statistical study was undertaken which permitted the determination of the grade of iron, magnetite, and, subsequently, specularite in the ore bodies. A discussion of the theory and logical progression of the study and the application of the results to actual geophysical data is presented. The conclusions, which are of real significance from the economic standpoint, may be predicted from the data obtained from geophysical surveys before any diamond drilling is undertaken. An integrated interpretation of this type is useful in planning future exploration work and selecting the most favorable geological structures. It also serves as a guide to minimize and determine tonnage drilling patterns. The general conclusion that a restricted range of residual gravity and magnetic anomalies are a key to exploration is valid. Indeed large depths to the top of deposits are absent since all the ore bodies are overturned synclinal structures with tops located close to the surface. Certain irregular geometries do occur but they are not common and the alignment of the iron ore bodies is sub parallel so that magnetic anomalies are evenly reduced in the earth's magnetic field vector.

On the basis of liquidus measurements in the system COO-Mg0-Al2O3-Sio, and previously published data, diagrams have been constructed at 5 pct Al2O3, intervals from 5 to 35 pct Al2O3,. Liquidus temperatures and primary phase fields are shown. The optimum composition of a blast furnace slag for a given alumina content is indicated. At the optimum point, ordinary slags will be entirely liquid and will have maximum desulphurization potential and minimum viscosity. The relation of optimum composition of slags to the "plateau region" of the liquidus surface, and the application of these data on synthetic quaternary slags to actual slag compositions are discussed. Index of refraction of glasses is given as well as composition, temperature, and phase data for each mixture. THE usual blast furnace slag, as a first approximation, can be considered a mixture of the four oxides, CaO, MgO, Also,, and SiO,. Systematic, extensive data for the quaternary system, CaO-MgO-A1,0,-SiO, is therefore required for the understanding of the properties of such a slag as a function of composition and temperature. With sufficient data, it should be possible to fix unequivocably the relative amounts of lime, magnesia, and silica required for a given alumina content to result in a slag composition having optimum properties. Other constituents, such as FeO, MnO, Ti02, and S, have an effect on the properties of a slag, but as long as they are present in small and approximately constant amounts they produce only a second-order effect superimposed upon the major changes in properties of slags determined by the relative amounts of the four major components. Viscosity and desulphurization data have been reported for mixtures approaching blast furnace slags in composition, but systematic liquidus data have not been obtained. Inasmuch as a slag must be all liquid in order to be most effective as well as practicable, clearly the temperature above which a mixture is all liquid (liquidus temperature) is a type of data needed. Such data have been obtained through the study of 446 compositions and are pre- sented in this paper along with a discussion of their bearing on the optimum composition of blast furnace slags. For an orderly presentation of the data, the quaternary system is viewed as a tetrahedron with one component at each apex. Fig. 1 shows a tetrahedron representing the system Ca0-Mg0-A1,0,-Si0,. Sodium silicate(s), also known as “water glass”, are one of the oldest and most widely used industrial chemicals. Its first use in North American mining operations can be traced back to around 1925, which coincided with early use of xanthates in mineral flotation. Silicate functions as a sulphide and non-sulphide gangue mineral dispersant, depressant and modifying reagent in grinding and flotation operations. It is believed that soluble sodium silicate promotes selectivity of value added sulphides against gangue minerals, resulting in both grade and recovery improvement. This paper seeks to link improved grade/recovery to the interaction characteristics of minerals and the sodium silicate. A systematic study was performed with individual mineral species, an artificially designed model ore and the feed ore from a copper metallurgical operation. The function of sodium silicate was evaluated in the context of colloidal chemistry and linked to mineral surface chemistry. Measurement of pulp rheology and mineral zeta potential identified that sodium silicate works as a dispersant. The dispersion is accomplished by increasing a mineral’s net surface charge, resulting in a mineral variable change in viscosity. Bench scale laboratory flotation tests suggest that better dispersion leads to a diminished interaction of chalcopyrite with gangue. The improved Cu grade and recovery then are likely in response to an increased accessibility to collector along with a linked increase in particle bubble attachment resulting in better separation efficiency. ToF-SIMS surface chemical analysis of the flotation samples found a higher proportion of sodium silicate on minerals from the flotation tailings relative to the concentrates. Moreover, attachment of sodium silicate appears to be mineral specific; the data indicates that sodium silicate favours the surface of gangue phases over the value sulphides. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing involves enrichment of valuable minerals from an ore, where the separation process utilizes differences between the properties of the value-added and gangue minerals. The properties of minerals, for example composition, specific gravity, particle size, magnetic properties etc., in any flotation feed ore, can vary significantly between the various minerals present. In flotation seperation surface chemistry and wettability is a significant component promoting selective separation of the various mineral phases [1,2] Mineral surface wettability can be changed, advantageously or deleteriously, by many factors including: surface layer alteration through oxidation; galvanic interactions; attachment of secondary precipitates; the adsorption of various reagents [3] In the flotation context the wettability of a minerals surface can be manipulated by various reagents. Collector reagents may selectively attach to specific minerals in the mineral/water slurry enhancing their surface hydrophobicity, increasing bubble-attachment efficiency and improve flotation kinetics and mineral recovery [4]. In contrast, depressant reagents may selectively reduce a minerals surface hydrophobicity resulting in poor particle-bubble attachment and non flotation. In essence, a mineral flotation flow sheet is designed to induce/promote a hydrophobic surface to the value mineral and a hydrophilic surface to all others. Therefore, the versatility of the froth flotation process lies in the selection of different flotation reagents.

Although a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. Characteristics and Requirements of Solders in General General Physical Properties.—When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.—The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) constructed the Hydraulic Transport Research Facility (HTRF) to investigate the hydraulic parameters relating to the transport of coarse coal. To achieve these goals in a timely and efficient manner, the Bureau contracted to Boeing Services International, Inc. (BSI) the responsibility of operating the HTRF and providing technical support. This data report is a summary of the testing and data results for the period from 16 September to 1 November 1983. The testing covered herein is for coarse 2-in by a (minus 50 mm) Pittsburgh Seam coal in a 12-in (3 00 mm) pipeline, at velocities ranging from 5 to 18 ft/s (1.5 to 5.5 m/s) and at concentrations ranging from 15 to 55 pct.
