A reliability based analysis method for a drilled shaft stabilized slope system is presented in this paper. In the past effort, a deterministic method using the limiting equilibrium method of slices for determining the global factor of safety of a slope reinforced by a row of drilled shafts was developed using the soil arching concept. The drilled shaft stabilization mechanisms for the slope were treated as the drilled shaft induced soil arching, which reduces the driving forces on the down slope side of the drilled shaft. The effect of drilled shafts induced soil arching on the reduction of the driving stresses in the limiting equilibrium slope stability analysis was quantified by the load transfer factor through extensive finite element simulation studies. A semi-empirical equation was also developed for expressing the load transfer factor as a function of the soil properties, including strength parameters and unit weight as well as the slope geometry and soil profile, the location and spacing of the drilled shaft, and the dimension of the drilled shaft. However, due to the inherent uncertainties of the soil properties and the model error of the semi-empirical load transfer equation, a modification of the deterministic method into a probabilistic method is developed in this paper. The Monte Carlo statistical method is used to generate random variables for the soil strength parameters based on the prescribed probability characteristics, including mean, COV, and the probability distribution function. In addition, the modeling error of the load transfer factor is also treated as a random variable in the Monte Carlo simulation method, in which the mean, COV, and probability distribution function for the bias of the semi-empirical equation are used. The developed theories were coded into a computer program for analyzing complex slope geometry and slope profile conditions. Two examples are shown in the paper to illustrate the analysis results of the developed probability approach for determining the reliability of a drilled shaft stabilized slope system.

Frozen backfill for mining operations in permafrost must be delivered in such a state so as not to thermally impose on the host rock surrounding the filled stope. The placement process, the material strength demand, and the freezing time delay are the parameters that control the applicability of the method. A two-year research program was carried out in the field and using a laboratory-scale apparatus, designed to simulate a pour of frozen backfill, to study the mixing, thermal properties and segregation. The frozen rock and tailings must be at a below zero temperature and get fully wetted so the surfaces cause adherence of the particles to one another and enhance the solidification of the poured backfill. The results provided a recipe and a process for mix design for open stoping operations in cold regions. The testing evaluated the sensitivity of the test parameters that included the amount of water added in the mix, the temperare of water, the rockfill/tailings ratio, and the temperature of solid constituents.The paper presents the result of this environmentally friendly, innovative technology. The distribution of the materials and the mixing process are instrumental in achieving the properties required for open stoping applications.

The purchase of coal by the Government under specifications depending on the heating value of the coal, its content of ash and of moisture, and other considerations, rather than upon the reputation or trade name of the coal, was based on the fuel investigations begun by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey in 1904. The plan was first adopted by the Treasury Department in 1906. Since then the plan, variously modified in form but the same in principle, has been gradually adopted by other departments until at present of the coal used by the Government, the total value of which approximates $8,000,000 annually, more than half is purchased under specifications. The Government publications dealing with the adoption by the Government of the specification plan, the number of contracts awarded on that basis, and the quality of the coal delivered under such contracts in the several fiscal years covered by the reports are given in publications listed at the end of this bulletin. Under the authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C., where samples represent- ing deliveries of coal purchased under specifications for Government use are analyzed and tested. At this laboratory more than 1,200 samples have been analyzed and tested in one month. With the complete equipment and the efficient force employed, the analytical work has been so perfected that the analyses and heating-value tests of the samples received are as accurate as may be reasonably expected in laboratory work of this nature. One of the serious drawbacks to the general adoption of the speci- fication method for the purchase of coal is the difficulty of obtaining at reasonable cost samples of coal that can be considered fairly repre- sentative of the commercial product delivered in wagons, railroad

THE magnetic method of prospecting is well suited to determination of faulting in the basement rock. In addition to establishing the horizontal position of the fault, it often furnishes valuable information concerning the depth and amount of faulting. Consider a simple case of a vertical fault, represented in cross-section in Fig. 1. Let A A' represent the plane of observation (ordinarily the surface of the earth), and BB'B"B"' the upper surface of the basement. Assume that the sedimentary rocks are nonmagnetic, so that the magnetic susceptibility of the material above the basement is zero. Let k indicate the susceptibility of the basement rock, c the density contrast between it and the neighboring sedimentary rocks, and the amount of vertical displacement. Fig. 1 shows the material, indicated by cross- hatching, which gives rise to the magnetic anomaly. In most cases it can be assumed that is small compared to the thickness of the sedimentary rocks. The semi-infinite, rectangular slab of rock of susceptibility k, density contrast , and thickness t may then be replaced by a semi-infinite sheet CC' of mass t per unit area at depth 2 (the mean depth of the slab). Nettleton 1 states that this approximation results in an error of less than 2 pct for the computed gravitational field intensity when t is as great as 2/2 and decreases rapidly for smaller values of t. By a theorem of Poisson, the magnetic field intensity can be determined readily from the gravitational field. Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. planned an expansion program for the Toyo smelter and refinery in order to increase the production capacity of electrolytic copper to 450,000 tpy in 2007. Regarding the flash smelting furnace, a drastic increase in the average concentrate smelting capacity from 2,300 tpd to 3,950 tpd was required to achieve the plan. It was necessary to examine the performance of the Sumitomo concentrate burner when the feed rate was considerably increased. The authors developed a mathematical model to describe the combustion phenomena in the Toyo flash smelting furnace. This model was developed incorporating the fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and chemical reactions of the copper concentrate and ancillary fuel. The copper concentrate was considered to mainly comprise chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The reaction of CuFeS2 was assumed to consist of two steps, namely, the decomposition of CuFeS2 and the oxidation of the resulting pyrrhotite (FeS) and sulfur (S). The combustion phenomena in the furnace at the increased feed rate were predicted using this model. It was found that the Sumitomo burner was capable of enhancing the smelting capacity. This is attributed to the wide dispersion of the concentrate particles caused by an increase in the particle mass and a long residence time in the reaction shaft; this is due to the low temperature of the reaction air. However nonuniformity of the reaction in the reaction shaft was enhanced with the increased feed rate. In order to improve the nonuniformity of the reaction, an increase in oil-burner oxygen and an enlargement of the diameter of the dispersing cone were useful. By combining the expertise of the Toyo smelter staff and the calculation results, the concentrate smelting capacity of the Toyo smelter has been stably increased to 3,600 tpd thus far, and further improvements of the smelting performance are still being carried out.

IN describing the mining and treatment of ore at the Broken Hill Proprietary mine E. J. Horwood, superintendent of mines, gave the following account of the development of flotation there. It was in 1902 that the recovery of zinc from the ore by flotation was hit upon. The former general man-ager, Mr. Delprat, directed our then research officer, Mr. Carmichael, to try boiling the tailing with salt cake of which there was a considerable tonnage left over from the leaching process. The idea was the possibility of dissolving the zinc. Carmichael made the. Experi-ment, but, rather discouraged, took the glass beaker down to the general manager's office, remarking that he could not get the stuff to settle. On showing the beaker to Mr. Delprat, the latter recognized the marked distinction between the black scum on the surface and the rest of the tailings, and exclaimed: "Why, this is the very thing we are after; the zinc is floating!" Patents were applied for at once, but later on it was found that another investigator, Potter, had already hit upon the idea of flotation. His patents, however, were so involved with other operations that his process was impracticable. Litigation followed, but in the end the B. H. P. paid the Potter Company a substantial sum as settlement. In the case of Carmichael's beaker, the acid in the salt cake acted on the small amount of carbonate present in the ore, producing CO. bubbles. Owing to the aversion of sulfide crystals to being wetted, the gas as generated attached itself to the zinc in in-creasing quantities until there was sufficient to buoy the zinc particle to the surface. This action went The next problem was to apply the principle on a commercial scale, and this involved much experiment and developmental work. Various kinds of sloping copper pans with gas jets below to maintain the tem-perature were first tried, but were found too slow and too costly in operation.

The Porcupine gold area, located on the Hudson Bay slope of northern Ontario, has produced over $100,000,000 in gold and has paid more than $28,000,000 in dividends, since the first real production in 1912. The character of the ore has been studied by the geologists of the Bureau of Mines of Ontario, the geological staffs of the operating mines, and engineers commissioned to examine properties there. What information the Government has is free to everybody; the geological staffs of the several properties also give to the visiting engineer what information regarding ore deposition they possess, and the author wishes to express his indebtedness to the geologists of the Ontario Bureau of Mines and the staffs of the operating mines for their free discussion of geological questions. This paper is based on the examination of several properties, various petrographic reports, not only on specimens from Porcupine but from elsewhere in northern Ontario, and interviews with Government and mine staff geologists. The petrographic work has been done by Prof. R. J. Colony, of Columbia University. Geological History The geological history of the district may be summarized as follows: The outpouring of great floods of lava accompanied by beds of tuff, flow following flow; the contacts of different flows can be seen in various parts of the camp. This period mas followed by an uplift and the production of the Temiskaming sediments by erosion. Later, dynamic action turned the sediments and underlying lavas on edge; this was followed by the intrusion of igneous rocks—in the Porcupine area the quartz porphyry, which is of such great importance in connection with the gold deposits. Doctor Burrows says: "The intrusions of quartz porphyry have in some way influenced the deposition or location of the gold but it is not likely the porphyry has been the source of the gold-bearing solutions." This statement of Doctor Burrows I indorse. The formation of non-gold bearing quartz veins followed the intrusion of the porphyry. These veins occur along or near the contact of

STORAGE AND FLOW Introduction The layout and design of a bin or stockpile for bulk solids should assure reliable feed at the required time and rate without spillage and, when required, without segregation and degradation. The typical procedure in the design for gravity flow follows these steps: 1. The bulk solids to be stored are identified and the range of moisture content, temperature, feed rate and time of storage at rest, as well as the storage capacity, are specified. The materials of construction of the hopper, that is of the converging part of the bin, are decided upon. Hopper liners and coatings to reduce wall friction are considered. 2. The flow properties of the bulk solids and the friction angles against the wall materials are measured for the expected range of conditions. 3. The width of a slot outlet needed for reliable flow of each solid under the full range of conditions is determined from the tests. This dimension is an explicit measure of flowability of a solid. The widest slot determines the critical solid and the critical conditions. 4. A suitable feeder of size sufficient for the widest slot outlet is selected. 5. On the basis of the measured wall friction angles, a suitable wall material is selected and a mass flow hopper is designed to ensure reliable and uniform flow of solid into the feeder and to minimize the load on the feeder. The mass flow hopper may extend upward to the intersection with the cylinder thus producing a mass flow bin. Alternatively, the hopper may terminate at a height equal to a few widths of the outlet and then expand at a less steep slope in its upper part in order to save headroom, or it may terminate in the flat bottom of a bin or stockpile. INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. Before discussing the application of capacitance for the measurement of moisture content in a moving stream of coal it might be well to first give a brief description of the process and then show how it can be applied to the coal industry. A capacitor may be described as a device having two conductors separated by an insulator, the conductors hereafter being designated as a test cell or test plates and the insulator as the dielectric. Capacitance, therefore, is a measure of the ability of a capacitor to store an electrical charge. Two basic factors that affect capacitance are the dimensions of the capacitor and the dielectric constant of the insulator. Capacitor dimensions which affect its capacity are the area A of the conductive surface, and the distance d between plates. Capacitance is inversely proportional to the distance between plates and directly proportional to area A, so if capacitance is indicated as C and the dielectric constant as K the equation for capacitance would be C = AK/d. The dielectric constant can be described as the ratio of the actual capacitance of any given material to that of a vacuum, which is unity. In industrial applications the area of the plates remains constant as also does the distance between them, leaving the dielectric constant as the only variable to affect the capacitance measurement. Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of an r-f excited capacitance bridge in which a test cell is part of the circuit. This bridge consists of four capacitors in two pairs connected across an a-c voltage source. In one side of the circuit the two capacitors are fixed but in the other side they are variable, one being the rebalance capacitor operated by the servo motor and the other the test plates between which the dielectric passes. Capacity of the plates is a function of the dielectric constant of the material between them and is measured at radio frequency. Within the recording instrument is an r-f oscillator and a 60 c ps modulator. The radio frequency signal is generated by the oscillator, modulated by a 60 cps wave, and sent to the bridge. Therefore the signal entering the capacitive bridge is a radio frequency carrier with a 60 cycle envelope, If the bridge is in balance as the signal enters there would be no voltage drop and so no output by the detector. As long as the dielectric constant remains the same the bridge will stay in balance. However, any change in the dielectric constant, which in this case would be a change in moisture content, would affect the bridge. Higher moisture increases the capacity of the test cell which causes less voltage to develop across it causing imbalance of the bridge. This in turn causes a radio frequency signal to appear at the detector. Output from the detector is a 60 cycle ripple which is in proportion to the imbalance of the circuit. A 60 cycle amplifier boosts the detector signal to enough power to drive the servo motor which positions the recording pen and also rotates the variable capacitor, to which it is mechanically connected, to bring the bridge back in balance. An increase in moisture causes the servo motor to rotate in one direction, but a decrease causes imbalance in the opposite direction, and thus rotates the motor in that direction. This brings the bridge back in balance and stops the motor. The bridge shown in Figure 1 has been modified so as to provide a wide range of adjustments. "The mode of ore occurrence and the methods and costs of mining at one of the zinc-lead mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead district, Oklahoma, are presented in this paper for the information of mine operators in other districts.No. 2 mine property was acquired by lease in 1918 after some 30 holes had been drilled and a shaft had been sunk to the 305-foot level by the first lessees. After acquisition of the lease, the present operating company drilled a rich ore body on the 260-foot level and in 1920 started sinking two shafts. Production was begun late in 1921, and the mine has been operated more or less continuously to the present time.The mill has a capacity of 400 tons in 10 hours, the usual length of the mill shift in the district.The geology of Mine No. 2 is very similar to that of Mine No. 13 except that the Cherokee shale is thicker, ranging from 80 to 160 feet, and all the formations are correspondingly deeper, the Short Creek oolite horizon here being at a depth of about 300 feet. The oolite has not been found on this property, but the lime comes in at about the level at which the oolite should appear.The ore deposits of Mine No. 2 occur in the brecciated and bowlder ground above the Short Creek oolite. The main or 260-foot level is about 40 feet above the oolite horizon, and the lower or 300-foot level is immediately above it.The ore deposition is controlled by a zone of shearing and fracturing, and the mineable areas are divided into two distinct runs which have a northwest trend with a lean or practically barren area dividing them. This characteristic has controlled the mining to a large extent, for it enables the mine superintendent to locate the large pillars in lean ore and leave only small pillars in the richer ore. Figure 1 shows the outlines of the ore body and the pillars.The ore on the main level occurs disseminated throughout the jasperoid breccia as patches or lenses in the jasperoid, or cementing massive bowlders of jasperoid breccia and chert. The ore of the lower level is more of the bowlder type than that on the main level and occurs chiefly cementing the bowlders but also with some disseminated ore in the jasperoid breccia.The gangue minerals are jasperoid breccia, chert, and dolomite. Calcite is found in minor quantities. Sphalerite is the principal ore mineral; galena is found only in minor quantities around the edges of the ore body. When galena is encountered in this ore body, the limit of the ore can be expected.The exploration and estimation of ore reserves at Mine No. 2 are similar in many respects to the methods used at Mine No. 1.4After the mine was opened up and the general character of the ore deposit had been determined, drilling operations were concentrated along the trend of the shear zone. Stmplified equations are developed for the flow of fluids in gas drive reservoirs in which the effects of gravity can be neglected. The results show that the pressure distribution is governed by a nonlinear heat flow type of equation, and the saturation distributions are related to the pressure by the same equations QS those developed by Muskat for the average pressure and saturations in gas drive reservoirs. Unrler certain conditions the equation for the pressure can be approximated by the linear form of the heat flow equatlon. This equation tk analogous to the equation for the pressure in single-phase compressible flow The analysis reveals that the equation for the pressure in n~ultiphase flows can be obtained directly from the equation for the pressure in slngle-phase flows by simply replacing the single-phase compressibility by the total compressibility and the single-phase mobility by the sum of the mobilities of all the fluids present. Perrine's method of pressure buildup analysis for multiphme flows is based on these same substitutions. Thus, the development presented in this paper constitutes a theoretical justification for Perrine's method of pressure buildup analysis. One of the most difficult problems associated with the production of oil is the determination of the flow of the fluids within the reservoirs. One purpose of this paper is to present the development of simplified equations for the flow in gas drive reservoirs. The other purpose is to present some of the needed theoretical foundation for the methods currently being used in the analysis of multiphase pressure buildup data. The analysis presented in this paper makes use of a partial linearization of the equations governing multiphase flows. It is felt that the process of linearizing or partially linearizing the nonlinear equations of multiphase flows can lead to useful results since this process has proved extremely valuable in the study of other fields of science and engineering where nonlinear equations are encountered. Pressure buildup data of shut-in wells have been used for many years to estimate the static reservoir pressure. These data have also been used in studying the aver- age permeability both away from and close to the well-bores. The majority of the buildup data are obtained from wells producing two or three fluids. As yet the theoretical foundations for the methods of buildup analysis used in connection with rnultiphase buildup data have not been established. A number of methods of analysis of pressure buildup data have been developed." Most of these methods apply only to single-phase flows, and almost all of the theoretical analysis is confined to single-phase flows. Perrine' developed a method of analysis for rnultiphase flows from the method for single-phase flows of Miller, Dyes, and Hutchinson.' He did this by simply replacing the single-phase compressibility by the multiphase compressibility and replacing the single-phase mobility by the sum of the mobilities of the fluids in the rnultiphase flows. Obviously, such a procedure lacks a certain amount of theoretical justification, and such practices can lead to erroneous results. Fortunately, Perrine's results have a theoretical justification, and this justification is presented in the following discussion. It is assumed that gravitational effects and the cornpressibility of the rock can be neglected. MY remarks will be confined to the experience of our company in mining the No. 8 seam of coal in Ohio, although I believe that the relationship existing here between the method of mining and the method of cleaning will hold true in many of the coal seams throughout the country. The increasing demand for a cleaner and better graded product is being felt throughout the entire coal industry, and the methods of mining are playing an important part in the control of various sizes and quality of coal produced. We have found a definite relation between the mechanical loading of coal and its preparation for the market. In the No. 8 coal seam the location of the non-combustible material is regular. The' marketable coal lies in three benches, separated by streaks or bands of impurities. These impurities must be removed from the coal to properly pre pare the product for the market. Where hand-loading methods are employed, the loader removes as much of this non-combustible material as possible at the working face. The impurities that are missed by the loaders are removed as the coal passes through the preparation plant, by means of picking tables. As this method of cleaning cannot improve the quality of the extremely fine sizes, a practice has been established in the company's hand-loading mines, of undercutting the coal about 2 in. above the bottom of the seam, thereby eliminating any possibility of impurities caused by the cutting machines cutting into the rock bottom below the coal seam.

"The town of Ajo is built in the desert and consisted of but a few houses when the New Cornelia Copper Co. started operations. Since there were no stores at Ajo or vicinity the New Cornelia Cooperative Mercantile Co. was established to serve the needs of the employees of the New Cornelia and allied companies.The New Cornelia Copper Co. advanced the money to erect the store building and to buy the stock, and assumes all risks. In all, $85,000 has been advanced, representing the capital stock of the enterprise.The store is run by a store manager appointed by the Copper Company and who reports only to the general superintendent. A committee of seven workmen, representing the various depart¬ments, meet with the store manager monthly and make suggestions for the betterment of the service and, present complaints which have been brought to their attention.The store is well managed, carries a large and well assorted stock and is modern in every respect. Prices are at the same level as in the other Southwestern mining camps. The Copper Company does not particpate in the profits of the store but does receive six per cent interest on the capital advanced. At the end of the year, after making proper deductions for interest on capital account, depreciation of store equipment and fixtures, and, for a proper sum to the surplus account, the rest of the profits is distributed among the employees of the company in proportion to the amount of their purchases."

THE petroleum production of the world, in 1923, for the first time reached the billion-barrel mark. A preliminary estimate of production is 1,014,413,000 bbl., an increase of 159,604,000 bbl., or 18.6 per cent. over the 854,809,000 bbl. produced in 1922, the year of next highest production. This increase resulted from an increase of 178,469,000 bbl. in the production of the United States; the total for the rest of the world shows a loss of 18,865,000 bbl., a loss caused by the decrease of approximately 32,278,000 bbl. in Mexican production. The Mexican decrease more than offset increases in the production of Russia, Persia, Roumania, Venezuela, Sarawak, and various minor fields. The increase in production for the United States, and consequently for the world, was the result of flush production from development to maximum capacity during the year of eight, bonanza fields-fields reaching daily yields of 100,000 bbl. or better. It might be ascribed more exactly to the production from the three flush fields of the Los Angeles basin. Their production alone was greater than the increase in the world petroleum production, or the increase in the production of the United States, and it was cheap oil from these fields that demoralized the oil markets of the world. The Basin fields were. the features and dominating factors in the oil industry of the world during 1923. The bonanza fields of 1923, their estimated production for the year, and peak are given in Table 1.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a full-scale test of a composite polyurethane-aggregate seal in a hydrostatic chamber at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. This composite seal consisted of a polyurethane and limestone aggregate core that was formed between two concrete block walls. In the hydro-static chamber test, water is used to pressurize the seal. During the test, the maximum average water pressure the seal was able to withstand was 18.9 psi. Further, the seal began to yield at an average water pressure of only 17 psi. At the time of the test, the minimum seal design requirement was 20 psi under 30 CFR4 75.335 (2005). Therefore, based on this test, the seal did not meet the regulatory minimum design requirement. Uniaxial compressive tests conducted on samples from the polyurethane-aggregate core revealed that both the compressive strength and the elastic modulus of the material were much less than that for polyurethane only with a density of 10.0?12.0 lb/ft3. The significant reduction in the strength and stiffness of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture results from the formation of a soft polyurethane foam around each piece of aggregate. The formation of the soft foam seems to be caused by residual moisture from the aggregate. The moisture also caused the density of the polyurethane in the polyurethane-aggregate mixture to be less than the design requirements. The lower density of the polyurethane in the mixture, along with the formation of zones of pure polyurethane only, resulted in the overall seal density being less than the design requirements. During seal construction, steps were taken to control the moisture, but were not successful. An analysis of the seal failure showed that the calculated shear stresses at failure and the estimated shear strength of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture are fairly close. This suggests that the strength properties of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture along with a weak zone of poorly bonded aggregate controlled the maximum pressure the seal could withstand. At the time of the seal testing, the minimum design requirement was 20 psi, as specified at 30 CFR 75.335 (2005). New emergency temporary standards for seal designs were promulgated on May 22, 2007, with a minimum requirement of 50 psi under specified conditions. However, it will be shown that the evaluation of the polyurethane seal performance as designed to meet the older 20-psi criterion can be relevant to the design requirements under the new standards.

To meet the increasing demands of the quality and long term stability of technical systems also the applied materials have to full fill higher standards. This is of special importance where the function of a whole system depends on the reliability of the used materials for example for connector systems in automotive, computer and other electronic equipment?s. In most cases for connector systems electro deposited top layers are applied. To improve the quality of the applied layers new electro deposited systems are developed. One important field of research are the development of composite materials as dispersion coatings and multilayer systems. Multilayers are systems with a high number of single inter-layers of different metals or alloys with the wide chance of the alloy composition. As gold is one of the most important contact material for high quality connector systems it is used as basis for the development of multilayer systems. For the electrodeposition of multilayers two different methods can be applied, the single and the dual plating process. As in the dual plating process two different electrolytes are used, the single plating process allows the formation of multilayers from one electrolyte. In the presented research results cobalt and nickel are used besides gold for the formation of the multilayers. The properties of the layers can be influenced in a wide range by the change of electrolyte composition and the process parameters as current density, current waveform, temperature, hydro-dynamic conditions at the electrode surface and by the number and thickness of the inter layers of the deposited materials. The paper describes the fundamentals of the electro deposition of multilayer systems. For the investigation of the properties of the multilayers different techniques are applied. One of the most important parameter are the thickness of the total layer and of the applied sublayers. The thickness of the sublayers can be varied between a few nanometers up to micrometers. The wear resistance, the contact resistance and the plug-in forces are measured as these parameters are important for the technical application of such layers. For the description of the structure composition and surface properties the sample where also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray-analyses (EDX) and glow discharge optical spectroscopy (GDOS). The paper shows that the deposition of gold based multilayers is possible and that the properties of such systems can be varied in a wide range what opens new fields of applications of such materials.

"Studying the interaction of the phosphorus-containing flotation reagent with the components of the flotation system ""liquid-gas-solid"" during flotation of non-ferrous metal ores allows regulating the enrichment process. The phosphorus-containing reagent-collector anabasinium-O,O-dimethyl-thiophosphate has beensynthesized under laboratory conditions and the concentrated aqueous solution of anabasin hydrochloride and the 40% solution of sodium hydroxide have been used as the raw material. The phosphorus-containing reagent has been obtained by interaction of the anabasine base, sulfur and dimethyl phosphite, due to sulfur and nitrogen atoms it can form complex compounds with heavy metal ions.Studying flotation of copper-sulfide ore of the Sayak field with the use of the phosphorus-containing reagent-collector anabasinium has been performed in the open and closed cycles. The degree of ore grinding was 60- 62% of the class -0.074 mm. There has been established the dependence of the ore flotation parameters on: a) pH of the pulp; b) the consumption of the reagent-collector anabasinium.The effect of the pulp pH on the technological parameters of copper ore flotation has been carried out with a reagent regulator that increases the difference in the surface properties of the minerals to be separated.There has been used lime as the regulator of the medium, the consumption of which varied from 750 to 1500 g/t; the consumption of the reagent-collector anabasinium was 10, 15, 20 and 25 g/t.It has been found that when flotation of copper ore without the use of lime at pH equal to 7.8 and at the reagent consumption, g/t: anabasinium - 25, T-92 - 55, copper recovery in the concentrate is 92.72%, the quality of concentrate is 7, 1%.In flotation according to the factory mode (the consumption of xanthate is 44 g/t, T-92 is 55 g/t, pH = 7.8 (without lime)) of copper ore, copper recovery in the concentrate is 87.38%, the concentrate quality is 7, 97%, with reducing the xanthate consumption to 25 g/t copper recovery is reduced to 83.39%, the quality of the concentrate is up to 6.69%.In the experiments using the factory reagent mode in the closed cycle, with the xanthate mass consumption of 44 g/t, T-92 blowing agent of 55 g/t, the third recleaning concentrate contained 19.13% copper with recovery of 86.89%.Using a phosphorus-containing reagent instead of xanthate with the same flow rate, the third recleaning concentrate with the mass fraction of copper of 19.82% has beenobtained with recovery of 87.77%."

THE nature of a collector-coated mineral surface has been the subject of some experimentation and much speculation. Various aspects of the problem have been isolated and studied; it is probable, however, that there exist aspects as yet unrecognized, which are needed for a complete description of the system. The recognized elements of the problem are: 1-The nature of the chemical units comprising the film and the nature of the forces holding these chemical units to the mineral surface; 2-The orientation of the chemical units at the surface; and 3-The disposition of the collector units at the mineral surface. This report touches upon all three aspects of the broad problem; it deals, however, with a new and heretofore unrecognized element-the mobility of the collector units in the two dimensions of the solid-liquid interface.
