"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. IN the accompanying figure consider the classified AB in closed circuit with a ball mill, wherein T = Tonnage of new feed C = Ratio of circulating load Now consider that the circulating load is made up of two portions of ore. One portion is due entirely to the characteristics of the ball mill and the tonnage of new feed impressed on the ball mill. This portion of the circulating load in no way is to be blamed on the characteristics of the classifier and is all composed of oversize. Consider, for illustration, that this portion of the circulating load is handled in the A division of the classifier, assuming that the classifier is divided longitudinally into two divisions by an imaginary line. Because the classifier does not usually make a perfect separation of the undersize, a certain portion of the total circulating load is to be directly blamed on the efficiency of the classifier. Let this portion of the circulating load be considered as being handled in the B division of the classifier. Now if the classifier is operating perfectly (100 per cent efficient), the width due to the B division becomes zero and correspondingly the efficiency of the classifier diminishes as B becomes wider in proportion to A. INTRODUCTION The inactive uranium mill tailings investigated in this study are located in two mining districts, Elliot Lake and Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. The sites exhibit a mixture of surface features consisting of dry areas, with or without vegetation and areas covered with water. On the edges of the water bodies, indigenous vegetation has invaded the tailings beaches [ Typha] spp. (Tourn.) L. a dominant plant on these tailings beaches, has been studied for the uptake of radium-226 and lead-210 (Kalin and Sharma, 1981b) from the tailings. It was found that most of the radium-226 remains in the roots of the plants, and that the solubility of radium-226 in control soil differs from that in tailings. The uptake of radium226 by vegetation and other biota is related to the solubility of the element in water. Factors controlling the solubility of radium-226 in uranium mill tailings are of interest in assessing the environments effects of these wastes. Rusanova (1962) found that the soluble or extractable amount of radium from the soil is inversely related to the total concentration of calcium and magnesium in the soil. Experimental work has clarified some aspects of the leachability of radium from uranium mill tailings (Levins, et al., 1978; Wiles, 1978, and others). Halvik, et al., (1967) studied the effects of pH and chemical composition of surface water on the liberation of radium from uranium mill tailings and uranium ore. He found that an increase in pH, up to a value of pH 9, decreases the amount of radium released from the tailings and the ore. A positive effect of calcium chloride was noted on the leachability of radium. Benes (1981) reviewed the physicochemical forms of radium and its migration in water. Based on experimental work, he identifies primary factors which determine leaching of radium from uranium mill tailings. The ratio of the volume of the leaching solution to the weight of the leached sample; the composition of the leached solids and the leaching solution, and finally the pH of the leaching mixture are of importance. He emphasized that a scarcity of field data exists, which would relate experimental work to the actual situation in the tailings ponds. Inactive tailings ponds in Ontario are 16 to 23 years old, and processes which are of importance in evaluating the long term effects of uranium mill tailings in the environment can be studied. The objective of this work was to investigate the leachability of radium-226 from the tailings under field conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sample Collection A description of inactive tailings sites in Ontario, where the tailings and the water for this study were collected, can be found in a report by Kalin (1981). [Typha] spp. specimens were excavated from 16 different locations along with the tailings attached to the roots of the plants. A tailings sample from the surface area, around the plant, was secured before the excavation. Tailings samples were also collected from dry areas free of vegetation in the vicinity of the wetland stand. Surface samples (depth 0-5 cm) and samples at a depth of 20-25 cm were secured. Water was collected from the shallow tailings beaches around the vegetation stands. Sample Preparation The roots of the plants were washed free of tailings with distilled water. The resulting thick slurry of tailings was allowed to settle in the wash basin for five minutes and the supernatant water was decanted. The remaining saturated tailings were brought to 400 ml volume with distilled water in a beaker. The slurry was mixed with a magnetic stirrer for two 24-hour periods. After the first 24-hours, the slurry was allowed to settle for 20 minutes and the supernatant water was removed. The remaining sediments were suspended again in distilled water (400 ml total mixture) and leached for a second 24hour period. The tailings slurries from the different locations had a solid to liquid ratio, which ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 grams of dry tailings material per millilitre. The variations in the ratios are the result of differing fractions of coarse and fine tailings on the sites. In the final leachates, the solid to liquid ratios of the samples were 0.17 (±0.1) g/ml. The pH of the surface water and the leachate was determined with an I.L. Portomatic pH meter. All the tailings samples were homogenized in a mortar and brought to dryness at 75 to 85°C. The latent hardening of silver and an Ag-Au alloy was investigated by lateral compression, overshoot in tension and cormpression, and the stability of multiple-slib orientations. The latent hardening of a secondary slip systenz depends on its relation to the primary slip system. For most secondary slip systems the latent hardening is larger for Ag-10 at. pct Au than for pure silver. The maximum increase in. flow stress on a secondary slip system over that of the primary slip system was 40 pct. The work hardening during the lateral-compression test on the latent system after prestress on the primary system is iuterbreted in terms of the preferential distribution of barriers to dislocation movement with respect to the active slip system in work-lzardened fcc crystals. The work-hardening in fcc crystals is mainly due to the dislocation interactions and the barriers to dislocation movement formed as a result of reactions between dislocations of different slip systems. The operation of sources on the latent system depends on the flow stress of those systems; hence, the increase in flow stress of a latent system due to glide on an active system, which is called latent hardening, is an important element in understanding the phenomenon of work hardening. The problem of latent hardening has attracted the attention of many investigators in the past. For example, a theoretical study of the elastic latent hardening of the latent systems due to glide on an operative system has been made by Haasen' and ~troh. These calculations, however, neglect the stress required for the intersection of forest dislocations by the glide dislocations, a factor which would be important for producing macroscopic strains on the secondary slip systems. The importance of this factor will become evident from the results presented here. Attempts have also been made to determine the latent hardening of different slip systems by experimental means by the methods summarized in Table I.3-9 The experimental methods used have been subject to certain limitations. For instance, in the method used by Hauser,9 frictional constraints between the specimen and the compression platen were not eliminated by proper lubrication (see Hos- ford10). Secondly, with the exception of Kocks,6 Hauser,9 and Rohm and Kochendorfer,11 latent-hardening studies have been made on only one of the slip systems, i.e., on either the conjugate or the coplanar slip system; hence, extensive results are not available on the latent hardening of different slip systems in the same materials, with the exception of aluminum.6 It was therefore decided to study the latent hardening of the conjugate, critical and half-related slip systems in silver. Similar experiments were done in Ag-10 at. pct Au to study the effect of solute (gold) on the latent hardening of silver. Lastly, indirect evidence can be obtained by a study of the orientation stability of crystals of multiple-slip orientations in tension and compression. This method has been used by Kocks6 to supplement his studies of latent hardening in aluminum. Similar studies were made at room temperature in single crystals of silver. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The single crystals of the desired orientations were grown and the tensile test specimens were prepared as described in Ref. 12. The compression tests were made on 1/4-in.-cube specimens. The specimens were cut from single crystals, in the Servomet spark-erosion machine.13 The two cut surfaces were planed using the lowest available planing rate in the machine to minimize the deformation layer. A brass strip was used as the planing tool. This method of preparation ensured plane parallel faces for the compression tests. The deformed material was removed by prolonged etching in a weak etching solution. A weak etching solution was used to prevent pitting of the surfaces and to ensure uniform etching. About 25 to 50 µ of material were removed from all faces by the etching treatment. The specimens were then annealed for 24 hr at 940°C in oxygen-free helium and cooled in the furnace to room temperature over a period of 7 hr. After annealing, the orientation of the specimens was determined by Laue back-reflection technique to make sure that no recrystallization had occurred on annealing. The compression-test technique and setup are described in Ref. 14. The Laue back-reflection technique was used to study the overshoot in tension, the overshoot in compression, and the stability of the axial orientation in tension and compression. The tests were interrupted after every few percent strain to determine the axial orientation. In investigating the overshoot in compression, the operative system was determined by studying the asterism of the Laue spots.

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. The oil recovery performance of systems producing entirely by bottom-water encroachment has been experimentally determined in a series of scaled laboratory-model tests. The effects of well spacing, fluid mobilities, rate of production, capillary and gravity forces, well penetration and well completion techniques on the oil recovery performance have been investigated. The laboratory tests were performed using two uniform, un-consolidated sand-pack models. The models have ratios of the interwell distance to the formation thickness of 12 and 2, respectively. Tests at constant total fluid production rate were performed simulating a range of uniform reservoir characteristics and operating conditions encountered in field operations. The performance was determined by material balance and by observation of the encroachment of dyed fluids into the models. The results of the model tests agreed with those obtained mathematically when the conditions previously considered in theoretical studies were simulated, that is, when the oil and water are of equal density and no capillary forces exist. The model study of bottom-water drive indicated that certain variables can aoect the oil recovery performance to a greater degree than can be predicted by present analytical methods. In one comparison, the oil recovery at a water-oil ratio of 20 (obtained at a wide well spacing) varied as much as threefold, depending upon the system's properties and the production rate. Lesser effect of mobility ratio and no eflect of capillary forces over the range studied were observed. The test 'results also showed that the deeper the well penetration into the oil column, the greater the total water production to a producing WOR of 20. However, the ultimate sweep efficiency, and so the oil recovery to this level of WOR, did not vary significantly with well penetration. Horizontal fractures at the top of the formation did not significantly change the sweep characteristics of the reservoir models when values of radius and fracture capacity encountered in actual reservoirs were used. Impermeable pancakes at the bottom of the well moderately increased the oil recovery efficiency both at water breakthrough and at high water-oil ratios. A method is outlined by which the oil recovery performance of other uniform bottom-water drive systems can be estimated from the information obtained in these model tests. INTRODUCTION When oil is produced from a well which partially penetrates an oil zone completely underlain by water, the water rises directly beneath the well in a symmetrical cone when the system is uniform. Two different flow mechanisms can cause the water cone to form—coning and bottom-water drive. In coning, the aquifer is relatively inactive and the cone is formed beneath the well by the pressure gradients associated with the oil flow to the well. The oil can be produced by a solution-gas drive, an edge-water drive or other driving forces in the interwell area. In a bottom-water drive, the driving force for oil production comes from an upward encroachment of the underlying active aquifer. Two papers have analyzed the theoretical performance characteristics of bottom-water drive reservoirs. In the initial mathematical investigation, Muskat' established the equations which determine the pressure distribution in this type of reservoir and solved these equations for certain conditions. Specifically, it was assumed that the water and oil had equal mobilities and equal densities, there were no capillary forces, the pressure throughout the oil zone remained above the bubble-point pressure, a constant pressure existed at the initial water-oil contact and the oil was completely displaced by the encroaching water. These assumptions were used in obtaining analytical solutions. In general, Muskat found that the sweep efficiency to initial water breakthrough to the well was larger for the thicker oil zones, the closer well spacings, the lower ratios of vertical to horizontal permeabilities, the smaller the penetration of the well into the oil zone and the smaller the bore size of the well. The production history after water breakthrough was expressed as a volumetric sweep efficiency at a given producing water-oil ratio. The results indicated that cumulative oil production at producing water-oil ratios of 10 is less affected by the well spacing than is the water-free production history. Muskat studied well spacing which today would be regarded as close. The maximum value of his dimensionless well spacing (ratio of interwell distance to formation thickness) was 4.3. This would require the development of a 50-ft-thick oil sand on less than 10-acre spacing if the vertical and horizontal permeabilities were equal, with

In order to better understand the fracturing process, bottom-hole pressures were measured during a number of typical fracturing operations. A recently developed system was used that allows simultaneous surface recording of both the bottom-hole and wellhead pressures on the same chart. The results from six fracruring treatments are summarized on the basis of the pressure data obtained. Al-though no complete analysis is attempted, the value of accurate pressure measurements is emphasized. Important characteristics of the bottom-hole pressure record do not appear at the wellhead because of the damping effect of the fluid-filled column. In four of the six treatments described, the formations apparently fractured during the initial surge of pressure with only crude oil in the well. The properties of the fluids used during the treatments are given and the fluid friction losses are obtained directly from the pressure records. This technique is also shown to be adequate for determining when various fluids, used during the process, enter the formation. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing for the purpose of increasing well productivity is now accepted in many areas as a regular completion and workover practice. Numerous articles have appeared in the literature discussing the various techniques and theories of hydraulic fracturing'. In general, three basic types of formation fractures are recognized today. These are the horizontal fracture, the vertical fracture, and fractures along natural planes of weakness in the formation'. Any one or all three of these fracture types may be present in a fracturing operation. However, with only the wellhead pressure record as a guide, it is difficult at best to determine if the formation actually fractured, and is almost impossible to determine the type of fracture induced. These difficulties arise in part because the wellhead pressure record, especially when fracturing through tubing, does not accurately reflect the pressure variations occurring at the formation. Several factors contribute to this effect and preclude the possibility of using the wellhead pressure as a basis for accurately calculating the bottom-hole pressure. These factors are: 1. The compressibilities of the fluids which damp the pressure variations. 2. The changes in the densities of the fluids or apparent densities of the sand-laden fluids. 3. The flowing friction of the various fluids and mixtures, which is dependent on the flow rates and the condition of the tubing, casing, or wellbore. 4. The non-Newtonian characteristics of a sand-oil mixture and its dependence upon the fluid properties, the concentration of sand, and the mesh size used. 5. The unknown and variable temperatures throughout the fluid column. Because of these reasons it was determined that in order to obtain a more accurate knowledge of the nature of fracturing, the bottom-hole pressure must be measured along with the pressure at the surface during a fracturing treatment. Even with accurate pressure data, a reliable estimate of the nature of fracturing is still dependent upon knowledge of the tectonic conditions. However, the hydraulic pressure on the formation is basic to any approach to a complete analysis. In order to accomplish this objective a system was developed to record the wellhead and bottom-hole pressures simultaneously at the surface. By recording both pressures on a dual pen strip-chart recorder, it was possible to greatly expand the time scale so that rapid pressure variations would be faithfully recorded. By such simultaneous recording, time discrepancies inherent in separate records are eliminated, thus overcoming one of the most difficult problems associated with bottom-hole recording systems. This paper illustrates the results obtained by using this system during six typical fracturing operations. All of these tests were taken in wells that were treated through tubing. By a direct comparison of the wellhead and bottom-hole pressures, the importance of obtaining complete pressure information during a fracturing treatment is emphasized. THE INSTRUMENTATION AND PROCEDURES The bottom-hole pressure measuring instrument consisted of a pressure-sensing element, a telemetering section, and a lead-filled weight or sinker bar. The pressure-sensing element used was an isoelastic Amerada pressure-gauge element. By using an isoelastic element, no temperature compensation was necessary in the tests described, since the temperature was believed to be well below the maximum temperature limit of 270°F. The rotary output shaft of this helical Bourdon tube element was coupled to a precision miniature potentiometer. The rotation of the pressure-gauge shaft thus changed the resistance presented by the potentiometer

In general, many problems relating to the exploitation of mineral deposits are probabilistic in nature. This derives from the fact that the geologic universe is inherently random. Probability theory and statistics have been found useful for forecasting the behavior of natural events that occur in the geologic universe. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the application of the theory of extremes to this fore-casting problem. For example, it is customary for design purposes to determine the rupture strength of geologic materials. The theory of extremes is exceedingly useful in describing that portion of the frequency distribution of rupture strength which contains the least strengths. Parameters describing the distribution of the least strengths are more important to the designer of mining excavations than parameters describing the total distribution. The basic principles of the theory of extremes will be detailed and illustrated. Any person required to work in the laboratory of nature is aware that uncertainty is a salient feature of all mining enterprises. A mining engineer required to plan the most efficient, practicable, profitable, and safe mine finds himself face to face with numerous ill-understood and often unquantifiable states of nature. Basic information necessary for adequate planning is often lacking or derived from incomplete tests on samples or experience of doubtful validity. The planning procedure usually takes the form of determining a feasible layout with the intent of determining an optimal layout when and if the necessary details and information become available. The crux of the entire procedure is the choosing of numbers to put into the operational and structural models which encompass the plan. Many times these numbers must be assigned qualitatively from past experiences and are called the "most probable ones." At other times, load records, performance records and material tests provide a basis for extrapolation. In any event, the numbers are chosen from a distribution or set of all numbers. Since each number in the distribution represents a possible state, the choice of any particular value is based upon a decision rule. To illustrate, consider the design of an underground structure or the design of a rock slope. The initial step is the formulation of the various possible structural actions which result from the geometry of the layout. For a given structural model various intensities of behavior are possible depending upon the load, deformation, and material characteristic spec-trums, respectively. Of particular interest to mining people is the failure behavior or condition, i.e., when there is a complete collapse of structural resistance by either structural instability or fracture. A necessary feature of the analysis is the "rupture strength" of the material. Information on the rupture strength is derived from testing either in situ or in the laboratory and the usual outcome is a variation in the test results. The methodology used to overcome this variation is to construct a frequency distribution of rupture strengths, and then determine a measure of central tendency and variability. The main idea involved is that the central tendency number will be used in the failure calculations and the measure of dispersion will be used to estimate the probability of failure. In particular if the distribution of rupture strength is normal, the mean rupture strength is the central tendency number and the standard deviation of the rupture strength is the measure of variability. Suppose the mean value of rupture strength is 1000 psi and the standard deviation is 200 psi. Insertion of 1000 psi into the failure calculation produces results that are unsafe, hence a common decision rule is to reduce the mean value by a "factor of ignorance" so that the failure calculation will produce a "safe result." If two is chosen as a factor of ignorance, this means the value inserted in the calculation is 500 psi or 2.5 times the standard deviation. The next step is to determine the percentage chance that failure will occur from a design created on this basis. Tables on the normal distribution function show that this percentage chance is 0.621% or approximately 7 times out of 1000. In practice, however, the situation is more complicated than represented by the foregoing illustration. The laboratory or field testing program usually constitutes a pathetically small sample of the geologic universe of interest and not enough testing is carried out to determine the exact form of the distribution of the test results. The normal, Cauchy and Student's T distributions are strikingly similar, and it becomes a matter of mathematical convenience to assume the normal law for phenomena which follow other laws.

Mine frictional resistance is one of the essential parameters of mine ventilation systems, and it is of considerable significance for the prevention and control of mine risks and accident hazards. Frictional resistance requires a lot of resources and time and has errors. To reduce the errors of frictional resistance, a regression model of frictional resistance is proposed based on the correlation analysis of the affecting factors. Through the comparative test analysis of seven regression methods, it is found that the classification and regression tree method for solving the proposed regression model has better performance than other methods. The least square error criterion is used to calculate and rank the importance of the factors affecting frictional resistance. The results show that the cross-sectional area of the tunnel, the support method, and the presence or absence of devices or pedestrian ladders have the most considerable influence on the prediction accuracy of frictional resistance. The support methods and cross-sectional areas are essential input variables. Through the combination test analysis of the influencing factors, the results show that the regression model does not have predictive ability when the number of input variables is less than 3 and the best predictive performance cannot be obtained using all the influencing factors. The best prediction model of resistance is to combine the shape of the tunnel, the support method, the presence or absence of devices or pedestrian ladders, and the cross-sectional area. The method proposed in this paper does not require a lot of resources and time investment, and the frictional resistance error is small. At the same time, it solves the problem of resistance prediction with incomplete data of influencing factors and provides a compelling new method for obtaining frictional resistance parameters.

The new system contains different sensors as: X-ray detectors, visible light cameras, NIR cameras, ultraviolet cameras and magnetic sensors, in the same sorting unit. The sorting unit allows advanced calibration options and fine-tuning of the installed sensors to achieve the best separation effect under controlled conditions. Finally, the processed material can be analysed and separated by the rejection mechanism, similarly to the industrial scale operation. At the same time, the process is carried out with limited amount of material allowing detailed statistical calculations for processed particles and all sensor types. The optimal settings and sensor types are specified for the industrial application.The paper describes the scale up of the results achieved for iron ore and coal, where the test work was first carried out using the new laboratory sorting system and where the industrial scale sorting system has been built, in the final stage. The industrial scale sorting results showed a very good correlation between the laboratory and full scale operation. Thanks to the detailed study carried out in the laboratory equipment, the settings of the sensors in the full scale operation provided much better separation efficiency. It was especially important to provide proper setting for the X-ray sensor data calculations, which can be very critical for achieving the best results. During the industrial scale sorting of coal, the input material had 40-55% rock particles as the direct source of ash in the coal stream. The optimal laboratory unit settings and transferring these settings to the industrial sorter, provided 98.8% efficiency for removing rock particles with only few % losses of coal."

The transverse distributions of the solids discharge velocity and mass flux at the discharge end of vertical and inclined lances were measured in order to detennine the transverse distributions of the axial momentum flux, which is a dominant factor influencing the penetration behaviour of particles into melts during submerged injection. The effects of gas velocity (10 - 30 m/s), solids loading (5 - 10), lance length (0.15 - 1.0 m), lance inclination (vertical downward - horizontal) and particle density (2500 - 8900 kg/m3 ) were investigated, while the lance diameter and particle size were fixed at 10 mm and 220 µm respectively. The particle velocities and mass fluxes were measured by image analysis of particles illuminated in a laser-generated light sheet aligned vertically through the axis of the lance at the discharge point. The particle discharge velocity profiles for vertical downward flows were synunetrical about the centre-line of the lance, with the maximum velocities occurring at the centre-line. The velocities increased with increasing gas velocity, increasing lance length and decreasing particle density in accordance with previous observations. The transverse mass flux profiles were also synunetrical for vertical downward flows, however at the lower gas velocities the peaks in the profiles were displaced from the centre-line of the lance by a fractional diameter of about 0.15. The particle discharge velocity profiles become increasingly asynunetric as the lance orientation was changed from vertical to horizontal, with higher particle velocities present near the top wall of the lance. The mass flux profile also became asyrrunetric as the horizontal orientation was approached, however in this case, the profile became biased towards the bottom of the lance. The effect was much more pronounced for a gas velocity of 10 m/s than for 30 m/s, showing the relatively stronger gravitational influence as the velocity was reduced.

Direct observation of charge shape and its motion in industrial mills is not possible; therefore, a combination of analytical and physical studies is used to determine charge trajectory. Software packages, which predict charge motion consider only the outermost layer of charge (single ball) and ignore the charge and the interactions of grinding elements. In the new version of the GMT (Grinding Media Trajectory) software, the effect of liners specification and bulk load on charge shape and trajectory are considered. The charge trajectory was measured in a laboratory mill with the diameter of 100 cm and length of 21.5 cm with the transparent end and compared with that of the old version of GMT. Four types of polyurethane rings were accurately machined to scale down the liners arrangements at two industrial mills. The model mill was operated at 55, 70 and 85% of the critical speed for five levels of mill filling (10, 15, 20, 25% and 30% by volume). The experiments indicated that the end walls effect was negligible for the model mill with the length of 10.8 cm and beyond. The proposed relationships to correct the trajectory and charge shape were validated by using the new liner of the Gol-E-Gohar iron ore company AG mill. The positions of shoulder, toe, toe departure and impact points were predicted with the relative errors of 5, 0.7, 2 and 0.2%, respectively. The GMT software was updated with the new relationships. The results of GMT simulation indicated that when the lifter face angle increased from 7 to 30°, the distance between the charge impact point and the toe decreased from 40.1 to 11.2° for 30% filling. The change in the position of the impact point meant increasing the probability of charge impacting the toe, not the liner which favored more efficient comminution practice.

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. It is anticipated that many future uranium mines in Australia will be using the in situ leaching mining process. It is fair to say that close to one third of uranium production will be generated by this method, whilst the other two thirds will fall on the uranium generated from hard rock mining and other mining methods, such as traditional open cut mining. For other types of deposits the in situ leaching mining method will remain the best technological, commercial and environmental alternative. It is important to identify and prevent all risks involved in uranium mining. The expertise in this subject is limited. Over the years there was only one mine using the in situ leaching process for uranium extraction in Australia. Computer simulation of propagation of leachate during and after the uranium in situ leaching is a crucial factor, not only for addressing the environmental concerns, but also for the most efficient recovery of the deposit. The decontamination can be modelled for a period of up to 100 years, with the acid neutralisation forecast for a period of up to 400 years. The results of the modelling are paramount for definition of the reserves, efficiency of the mining method and the environmental impact statement. The accuracy of the hydrogeological modelling and carefully selected environmental management program enables a mining company to quantify and minimise the impact of the mining activities on the regional aquifer and to prevent environmental disasters. In the study, the completed hydrogeological model allowed the client, the authorities and the community to make an informed decision about the environmental impact of the in situ leaching of uranium. In particular, the model proved that neither during the mining, nor during the neutralisation the toxic elements would interact with the local catchment area.

"The Barrage des Quinze dam is a concrete sluice dam consisting of 19 spillway sections, each of which is approximately 7.6 metres wide and 14.5 metres deep. Rehabilitation efforts being performed on the dam including demolition and improvement of the roadway and spillway sections and grouting to mitigate underseepage. Initially, conventional cement grouting was attempted and was successful in 14 of the spillway sections, but unsuccessful in 5 of the sections due to the high water flows which washed the grout away. The removal of the roadway and portions of the piers during construction temporarily reduced the stability of the structure limiting grouting pressures that could be applied. This and the substantial high water flows (leakage) beneath the dam between the concrete/rock contact and within fractures in the upper rock formation created a challenging situation to create a cutoff.A grouting solution was developed that involved implementing several different grouting methods and materials including balanced high mobility grouts (HMG); low mobility grouts (LMG); polyurethane grouts; and sodium silicates. Because of the critical scheduling for the work, multiple approaches were planned and made available on site so that the work could proceed with the best technology with little, if any, time loss. The end goal of the grouting program was to create a seepage cutoff beneath the 5 sections of the dam in a stepwise process. The initial step was to fill the large openings and create a grout barrier to reduce the high water flow. The second step was to seal the contact between the base of the dam and the bedrock; and the third step was to complete closure by grouting a deep grout curtain into the underlying rock. Other features of the work included an extensive grout mix testing program, water pressure testing, borehole camera survey, and monitoring of the grout injections."

Blasthole sampling practices were investigated at the Erdenet copper and molybdenum mine in Mongolia to address grade reconciliation issues. The goal of the study was to determine if the particle size distribution (PSD) of blasthole cuttings was accurately reflected in the samples. The study additionally examined if the measured grade was related to the particle size of samples. Using a sector sampler specifically designed to collect samples for the study, six large samples were collected from three blocks following a specialized protocol. Each sample was split into nine size fractions, ranging from larger than 12 mm to smaller than 63 µm. Copper and molybdenum grades were determined for each of the size fractions. For comparison, nine samples were collected from the same blocks following the standard mine sampling protocol. These samples were also split into the same nine size fractions. As with the other samples, grades were determined for each of the size fractions. The results showed that the PSD in the samples collected following the standard operating procedure varied significantly from sample to sample. This variation was much lower for the samples collected following the specialized protocol. Loss of fines was also indicated in the standard mine sampling process. These observations suggest that the standard sampling protocol did not consistently capture the PSD. The copper and molybdenum grades increased as particle size decreased, regardless of the sampling protocol used. This observation underscores the importance of the PSD of a sample being representative of the true PSD. Given the low number of samples in the study, it is not a strong conclusion that the standard sampling protocol captures the PSD inconsistently. However, it could be taken as a caution. On the other hand, the grade versus PSD relationship is more certain, given that it was observed regardless of the sampling method used.

In Copper smelter Aurubis Bulgaria, the copper in slag from the Flash furnace and the Converters is recovered by flotation. The scheme of slag processing is crushing, two stage grinding (autogenous and ball) and flotation. Till 2010 the grinding cycle in the plant was in two stages ? the first stage was AG Mill 70?23 working with a classifier and the second stage was ball mill 3.6/5.5 working with a hydrocyclone. In 2010 a new AG Mill 65x78 with hydrocyclone was put in operation in order to increase throughput of the plant. The second stage of the grinding cycle is with the same ball mill. The Old AG mill processed 55-60 t/h slag with particle size -0.071 mm 75% or over 75 t/h with particle size -0.071 mm 35-40 %. The new AG Mill was designed for throughput 105 t/h with particle size -0.071 mm over 70 %. After the start up there were some problems with the equipment ? block up of AG Mill?s grate and pumps for feeding of the hydrocyclone. For optimization of the process a lot of general tests were made. One of the main problem was a wearing of the sand nozzles. Different materials (rubber, ceramic, metallic) for the sand nozzles were tested. The openings of the grate were changed. This paper presents: ? the optimal technological parameters of the old and the new working scheme; ? how the technological parameters of the new working scheme change when the hydrocyclone works with different nozzles; ? the effect of the change of the grate openings; ? the problems with the increase of the circulating load; ? a final decisions for improvement of the grinding cycle work. RECENT experiments indicate that the usual type of concentrating-table is not only poorly adapted to produce the desired results, but also is based upon an incorrect principle, namely, the use of riffles to perform the work of stratifying the various minerals. We have heard a good deal about riffles for concentrating-tables; exhaustive experiments have been made to discover the proper form of riffle, or to prove the superiority this or that form; disputes and patent-litigation have arisen over the matter of riffles, and thus many have been led to believe that the riffle is the saving-device upon which the process of concentration depends. In the present paper it is proposed to show that the riffle is greatly overrated as to the part it performs in the concentration of minerals, and that, in the near future, it may possibly be eliminated entirely from that process. The experiments in question have shown that the troublesome riffle can be considered of secondary importance at the most, and should be so classed in the construction of a concentrating-table built upon the right lines. The action of any form of riffle on a concentrating-table is such as to upset and retard the process of settling and stratifying the various minerals on the table-deck. From the deck of a riffled table no concentrates can be delivered until the deck is "bedded," that is, until a sufficient amount of metallic values have been fed to the table to spread over a large portion of the deck, forming a substratum of the heavier minerals. This substratum must be maintained by the feed within quite narrow limits, and directly proportional to the rate of discharge from the table, in order that the bed shall not be lost. THE recent growth of a sentiment among cyanide-plant designers against the use of gravity-stamps for the crushing preliminary to cyanidation may be said to date from the almost simultaneous perfection of the ribbed tube-mill liner and of the tall, air-agitation tank. The first step in the resulting change of practice was the universal adoption of the tube-mill for fine-grinding and the use of coarse screening oil the battery. This was the beginning of the surrender of supremacy by the gravity-stamp ; since merely the single fact that it was a more economical machine for crushing fine had retained it in favor as compared with ball-mills, rolls, or steam-stamps. The surrender, however, is not yet complete. It is the universal practice to use rolls where a relatively small tonnage is to be crushed coarse, as, for example, when coarse concentration is included in the plan of treatment. Power, attendance, repairs, and first-cost are smaller for the rolls, under such circumstances, than for stamps; and it is becoming daily more apparent that, with no concentration to provide for, the use of rolls and tube-mills, without the complication of trommels and elevators required by concentration, is rapidly gaining favor in the eyes of the leading designers. The next step was the use of the rapid-running Chilean mill between the gravity-stamps and the tube-mill, which again narrowed the field of operation of the gravity-stamp while radically widening its screen-aperture. Such a combination of stamps and Chilean mill offers advantages when fine concentration is necessary, since the reduction in the Chilean mill call be adjusted easily and governed by varying the screen-mesh. The Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977, PL 95-87 (The Act) granted the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) the duty of collecting fees from the active coal mining activities to be used in abating the hazards associated with abandoned coal mines. Since the passage of the Act, OSM has been instrumental in closing a multiple of mine hazards and in full cooperation with the states involved. Complete mine closures range from simply filling a subsidence hole to exodic designs costing thousands of dollars, such as in the case of the Portal Park swimming pool in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Portal Park olympic sized swimming pool was built over an abandoned coal mine by a group of local citizens and given to the city of Colorado Springs. This pool receives the largest number of users each year. During the past four years, OSM has abated six mine related hazards in and around the pool. During the summer of 1982, the pool started tipping causing the pool waters to run out the west end. This pool tipping and the associated cave-in problems caused great concern to the city and the local users. This citizens concern generated a request from the city for OSM to assist in checking out the pool problems. Early in 1983, OSM initiated a driling program to investigate the subsurface voids. This drilling effort revealed several large voids within a few feet of the pool deck, with all voids inundated with ground water. Therefore, the void filling method favored the hydraulic backfilling needed to be confined to the area under the pool. This confining problem lead to the development of the gravel bulkhead cutoff walls to confine the backfilling effort to the areas under the swimming pool.
