The aerospace and automotive industries are facing a significant risk for cumulative trauma disorders from high-repetition, long-duration tasks. Additional risk factors such as shocks, vibrations and sustained uncomfortable postures oftentimes contribute to musculoskeletal, neurological injuries associated with the hand-arm system. The power tools used for the operation reduce the comfort and working efficiency of the operators, thus lowering their health and safety and the quality of operation. This paper investigates the fastening operation on the assembly line of a major aerospace company for quantifying hand-arm vibrations with the objective of developing a dynamic model of the hand-arm system. The model will be used to ascertain the effect of the various risk factors on the quality of the operation. Experiment Setup A system of three tri-axial accelerometers is used to collect vibrations entering the hand-arm system and their positioning follows the ISO-5349 standard. Reaction force during the operation is measured using a force sensor. The posture of the hand-arm system is measured using two goniometers and one torsiometer. The pilot study conducted has two subjects and one pistol-grip power tool. The experiment setup and positions of various sensors is depicted in Figure 1. "The nickel deposits of Sudbury, discovered in .1885, have probably commanded as much attention as any single group of orebodies in the world. They have been the major source of the world's nickel supply since 1903, when their production first surpassed that from the Pacific Island of New Caledonia. From 1903 to 1914 the production from New Caledonia remained essentially constant, whereas that from Sudbury increased from 13,000,000 to 50,000,000 pounds a year. After 1914 the production from New Caledonia gradually dropped to about 4,000,000 pounds in 1919, where it remained until 1923. During these years the Canadian production increased steadily and since 1923 has gone up at an amazing rate to a peak of over 280,000,000 pounds in 1941. Meanwhile the New Caledonia production increased to about 10,000,000 pounds until the pressure of war raised it to roughly 14,000,000 pounds a year.The Sudbury deposits, because they have been the source of 80 per cent of the world supply of nickel, because of their economic importance to the world of metals, and because they are geologically unique in their occurrence, structure, and genesis, have attracted foremost consideration and the literature relative to their geology is voluminous. This is particularly true in regard to genesis.There is a significant and interesting parallel in time between the advancement of the science of economic geology and the great expansion of the nickel industry. The controversies regarding the fundamental classification of orebodies into generalized types were in full swing during the height of the development and expansion of the great nickel mines, and the Sudbury deposits, being the most important and the only ones of the sulphide type extensively developed, have been the chief source of information in regard to this type. The observations and the conclusions drawn thereon from numerous studies of the various mines of the district have not only influenced, but are the essence of, this chapter of the science."

"The results being presented in this paper are those obtained during 1996 on a drilling automation project at Stobie mine. This project has successfully demonstrated that the remote operation of multiple drills (by a single driller) from surface using Tamrock Data Solo 1000 Sixty drillrigs is technically feasible and can potentially bring significant rewards in terms of productivity and work environment improvements, as well as labour and maintenance savings. BackgroundThe ObjectiveThis paper is an update of a previous report on remote drilling research at Stobie mine. Enabled by the communications system installed at the mine, the ability to remotely control underground equipment from surface has been demonstrated (Poole et al., 1996). This paper discusses the needs and process required to carry this concept to consolidate the operation of multiple machines under a single operator.The TeamThe team assembled to develop and implement the automation and the communi-cations extensions needed to allow the multiple machines’ operation from the surface by one operator included the following:INCO Mines Research supplied the project management and original project initiative. The primary purpose was to prove the advantages of savings associated with the driller not being required to travel to the underground drill location coupled with the savings associated with one-man, multiple-machine techniques.Tamrock EJC supplied the Data Solo 1000 Sixty drills and the Tamrock specific machine-based custom software. The drills were produced in Finland with no provision for remote operation of the drill from other than the umbilical attached local console.Automated Mining Systems supplied the modifications to the drill communications equipment to allow the machine communications to become broadband compatible. As well, Automated Mining Systems also supplied the hardware necessary to be able to remotely control the portable video camera, as well as the data logging equipment.Stobie Mine personnel were made available to test the function and then integrate the concept of remote control drilling into the Stobie operations."

Coal bump, or coal burst, is one of the catastrophic disasters in underground coalmine. Among them, approximate 80% of recorded destructive burst events were occurred in mining roadway. The bump panel is often formed by hard coal seam and hard main roof; however, the cause and course of the bump events are not understood yet. This study provides a fundamental theory for the causality and progress of a coal bump event occurred in longwall roadway. Considering hard roof condition commonly existed in bump panels, we think that the abutment pressure induced by suspended roof behind the working face is the trigger of a coal bump event occurred in the roadway. Once high abutment pressure is concentrated on the hard coal seam around the working face, the roof and the coal around the working face form a seesaw-like structure, which leads the roof in front of the working face moving upwards. The movement of roof uplifting in front of the working face is a well evidenced phenomenon in practice, namely, roof rebounding, which causes unloading of the normal stress on the roof-coal interface around the roadway. A rib coal block bump mechanical model has been developed to establish the critical equilibrium equation of the coal block. Result shows that, the force source of coal bump is the horizontal ground stress perpendicular to the rib surface; and the slippage of the coal block is caused by the unloading of the normal stress acting on the roof-coal interface. Based on the causality and consequence theory of coal bump developed in the paper, several new prediction and prevention measures have been developed, including roadway design and in-tunnel reinforcing methods. The commonly used prevention measures in present have also been discussed. This paper presents a comprehensive explanation of coal bumps occurred in longwall roadways, from abutment pressure at working face forming seesaw structure to roof rebounding leading slippage of the rib coal mass into roadway, which provides a fundamental theory for coal bump causality mechanism and prediction and prevention technology.

"A commercial program package called Crownoff for the simulation of temper rolling in four high mills has been verified against measured data. The agreement between measured and calculated transversal strain distributions of the strip was found to be good. Effects of the strip crown and work roll bending force on the strain distribution were simulated. The results showed that when a single ground camber of work rolls is used for all strip widths; the strip crown should be parabolic, excluding the edge drop. An increase or decrease of the strip crown by 30 % during a coil can be compensated by a 2 to 5 t change in the work roll bending force. The ability to control the strip crown by work roll bending was insensitive to strip width. IntroductionCold rolled steel strips are usually temper rolled after recrystallization annealing, which follows cold rolling. The purpose of temper rolling is to suppress the yield point, finish the strip surface and correct possible flatness errors. The presence of a yield point might otherwise cause problems during subsequent forming processes. The in homogenous yielding in non-temper rolled steels leads to the formation of Lüders bands in the strip surface.The rolling force is influenced by the rolling speed and changes in frictional conditions in the roll bite. Therefore it is very important to plan carefully the mill settings and control algorithms during rolling. The purpose of mill control algorithms is to ensure constant reduction and the best possible strip flatness during the entire coil.Correctly predicting the rolling force is important for determining the mill presettings. Torque, forward slip and power requirements are not usually critical, if the reductions are small. However, the large elastic deformations occurring in the roll bite make the physical description of the process difficult. Physical rolling models developed for cold rolling contain assumptions that lose their validity as the reductions decrease to the level of one per cent."

"Fountain Slide is located approximately 10 mi (16 km) northeast of Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada, within the Coastal Mountain Range, and has been locally active since the 1970s. The project site is located near the base of the relic Tunnel Mountain landslide. The progressive movements have posed a significant challenge to British Columbia (BC) 99, the main north-south highway in the region. The slide began affecting the British Columbia Railway Company (BCR) tracks in the 1990s. In 2004, the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) acquired BCR and, during the next 11 years, undertook measures to stabilize the rail bed. Some of the measures undertaken include numerous track realignments, a shotcrete and soil nail wall, an anchored soldier pile-and-lagging wall, and adding a row of anchors to the wall. For many years, the measures had proved successful until mid-2014 when it was observed that the slide retrogressed uphill of the tracks. Since that time, the slide movements typically ranged between 5/32 and 0.4 in (4 and 10 mm) per day, leading to extreme distortion of the earth retention system and the need for frequent track realignment.In the spring of 2016, CN issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a designbuild solution with the expectations of: (1) a safety factor greater than 1.2, (2) considering only the currently identified retrogressive blocks that extend to about 200 ft (61 m) above the track; and (3) minimizing activities outside the current easement. It was also communicated that there was a possibility that a portion of the line may have to be abandoned if the proposed remediation was cost prohibitive.The fact that the existing slide was a small fraction of the relic slide was intimidating. The primary aim of all ground geophysical work has been, of course, to locate orebodies. As with any geo-physical method, its success depends on a proper mastering of the types of surveys and equipment used and their application to the physical properties associated with the orebodies. The Schefferville deposits are iron ores subjected to enrichment by the process of leaching. Although some ore types are porous and low in demiity, most of the ore zones have had a net increase in density brought about by enrichment. In the course of their formation, the magnetic characteristics of the rocks have usually changed, as much of the magnetite was altered to relatively non-magnetic iron oxides and hydrous iron oxides. Ali drift-covered areas underlain with iron-formation are potential ore-producing areas. From these first two physical proper-ties and a determination of the thickness of the over-burden, a combined gravity-magnetic-seismic and/or resistivity survey allows for the detection and sorting out of iron-formation and potential ore zones from the country rocks. If the iron-formation possessed relatively uniform physical and chemical properties, the problem of locating areas underlain with ore, using geophysical methods, would be greatly simplified. Unfortunately, the iron-formation is a complex assemblage of rock types, each having different physical and chemical characteristics. In spite of this, qualitative and semi-quantitative correlation between the results of the surveys and the geology and structure of the area could be established. In addition, a semi-quantitative to quantitative correlation of the values of the residual gravity anomalies with the specific gravity, the iron content, the porosity factor, the dimensions of the under-lying orebodies and the values of the ground magnetic intensity above a reference lithologie unit, with the per cent weight Fe304 recovery and the susceptibility, led to the discovery of a direct-shipping iron ore deposit in the Schefferville mining district of Canada.

"The recrystallization behavior of Nb micro alloyed steels containing Cr, Mo, Ni and Ti. was studied using hot torsion testing with the aim of modeling the recrystallization processes and the mean flow stress taking into account the microstructural behavior during hot rolling. The kinetics of static and metadynamic recrystallization were characterized and appropriate expressions were formulated for the recrystallization kinetics. These are shown that the recrystallization kinetics depend on steel composition and the processing conditions. The stress-strain curves were determined in order to derive new equations for the peak stress, peak strain, mean flow stress and softening kinetics. The peak strain is influenced by the presence of alloying elements; their addition, which has a solute drag effect, retards the rate of grain boundary motion, shifting the peak to the right. The addition of Nb to the steel results in a significant increment in the activation energy for hot deformation, and Mo has smaller effect than Nb, but Cr has the opposite effect. It was also found that the deformation activation energy in these steels was not altered by the addition of Ni. The rate of metadynamic recrystallization increases with strain rate and temperature and is observed to be independent of strain, in contrast to the observations for static recrystallization.The mean flow stress (MFS) calculations, based on the Sims analysis, are then compared with the predictions of a model based on an improved Misaka mean flow stress equation in which solute effects, strain accumulation, as well as the kinetics of static and metadynamic recrystallization are accounted for. Good agreement between the measured mean flow stresses, which is obtained from the mill logs of POSCO Kwangyang #3 HSM (hot strip mill), and 'predicted ones is obtained over the whole range of rolling temperatures. The results demonstrate that dynamic recrystallization followed by metadynamic recrystallization, supported by the unexpected load drops, sometimes occurs for the rolling schedules studied in the present analysis."

"INTRODUCTION The Camp Bird mine was investigated by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ September 22 and 24, 1942, and April 29 and 30, 1944. In a subsequent report and supplement, it was recommended that core drilling be done below the 14th. level to determine if commercial ore existed at greater depths, and particularly if ore existed in the vein or adjacent thereto where it passes into the sedimentary formations estimated to underlie the volcanics approximately 400 feet below the 14th level.Seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 3,956 feet were drilled. Four of these holes were under the Hematite ore body and three were under the Big Discovery ore body. Two holes under, the Hematite ore body wore directed at angles but little steeper than the angle of dip of the vein and penetrated the sedimentaries beneath the volcanics close to the vein. Enough low-grade ore was found at the base of the Telluride conglomerate to indicate the presence of a large body of low-grade zinc sulfide ore. Two holes were directed to crosscut the vein at a depth of approximately 125 feet below the 14th level. No commercial ore was cut, but the vein showed the average width and same general characteristics as at the 14th level. One hole under the Big Discovery ore body was directed to crosscut the vein and test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in the footwall block. No commercial ore was found in either the vein or the sedimentary horizon. One hole was directed to test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in close proximity to the vein in the hanging-wall block. This hole was lost approximately 100 feet short of its objective, and a third hole was drilled to accomplish this same thing. In this study, the detachment behaviour of 314 μm diameter silica particles from a single 3 mm diameter bubble rotating in a confined cavity connected to a cross-flowing water channel was investigated. The liquid cross-flow generated a rotating flow inside the confined cavity, which was quantified using 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The fluctuating (x-y) velocity components inside the cavity for each cross-flow velocity, U, were then used to estimate the corresponding time/volume average turbulence intensity values, Ti. Turbulence intensity ranged from 9.3-16.2%. In the absence of a bubble, the rotating vortex within the cavity created a pressure field which decreased towards the centre of the vortex; wherein the lowest pressure zone was located at the centre of the cavity. The vorticity into the cavity was found to increase with increasing the turbulence intensity. A bubble, both without and with particles attached, was introduced into the cavity under different flow conditions and its motion was tracked using the shadowgraphy technique. Experimentally, it was found that the bubble-particle aggregate was trapped at the centre of the cavity (low-pressure region) following a spiral trajectory. An interface resolved 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to predict the particle detachment conditions within the confined cavity. CFDpredicted vorticity in the absence of a bubble agreed well with experimental observation. The CFD analysis indicated that the vorticity inside the cavity was not significantly changed when a single bubble was introduced. On this basis, the computed vorticity was utilised in describing the force balance applied to the attached particle. Computationally, it was found that the critical turbulence intensity, beyond which the particle was detached from the bubble, was 14%. This value was consistent with the experimental observation of detachment at Ti at 15.7%, and above, but not at lower values. This paper describes in detail the controlled blasting adopted and the measurements undertaken for the successful excavation of large twin tunnels under a shallow cover for a six-lane highway project in India. The tunnels are D-shaped, each 15 m in diameter, and the cover between the tunnels and the existing railway track was about 14 m. These twin tunnel tubes were characterised by two separate three-lane carriageways for each direction of traffic, and were planned with about 25 m of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) portals at the entrance and exit of the tunnels. The major challenge of the project was the blasting of tunnels in rock below an operating railway line. As the tunnels approached the area below the railway line, the ground vibrations were monitored vertically above the blasting faces and on the railway track sleepers. Vibration intensities between those generated from tunnel blasting and those from the movement of the trains were compared, and it was found that the vibrations from blasting were lower than those from the moving trains. Though the permissible level of ground vibration based on the Indian Standard (IS) code happens to be 70 mm/s, the maximum charge per delay was calculated restricting this limit to 50 mm/s. This ensured that the vibrations in the vicinity of the railway tracks never exceeded the prescribed limit of 70 mm/s. The surface ground settlement before and after the blasts were also measured using an optical levelling instrument, which confirmed that there was no significant impact on the surface movements due to blasting. Extensometer readings inside the tunnels showed that there was no deformation in the tunnel. The comparison study on adsorption of potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX) and sodium (nbutyl) dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC) on sperrylite mineral forms a basis in understanding the floatability improvement and paves a way for the design of collectors that may impact on a wide range of arsenide minerals. This study used a computational density functional theory (DFT) and experimental microcalorimetry approach to determine the adsorption energies of PNBX and SNBDTC collectors onto a sperrylite mineral surface. From a computational aspect, we considered the most stable surface plane of (100) surface, which had been found to give the lowest surface energy, compared to the other surface planes. It was observed that the PNBX and SNBDTC preferred to bridge on the As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. These findings showed that the collector adsorbed on the surface through both Pt and As atoms and indicated that the As atoms were significantly active in the adsorptions. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SNBDTC (–278.38 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–270.92 kJ/mol), indicating that the dithiocarbamate had stronger exothermic adsorption than the xanthate. From the microcalorimetry test it was also found that the SNBDTC was more exothermic than the PNBX and the adsorption energies were: SNBDTC (–473.50 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–331.13 kJ/mol). These results showed that the nitrogen atom in the SNBDTC collector had a great influence on the adsorption strength of the collector on the mineral surface. This is due to the electron deposition behaviour of nitrogen atoms compared to the electron withdrawing character of oxygen and as such the SNBDTC showed better collecting ability than the PNBX. These results paved the way for the design of collectors for sperrylite and other arsenide minerals and suggested that nitrogen in a collector may significantly improve the ability of the collector for improved recovery. Nowadays, technology dominates all aspects of human activities, and drilling and Blasting (D&B) is no exception. In most cases, the use of technology in D&B is focused on controlling individual activities such as drill performance, drilling advance rates, truck loading performance, etc. Still, in very few instances, the advantages of using technology along each D&B activity and how this influences the D&B results are documented. This paper shows how technology is applied to create a “relative hardness” model for the mine Caserones in Chile. In the future, the model can relate the relative hardness parameter to several variables, including excavation rate, fragmentation results, and vibrations. It can also be used in the explosives loading process, similar to the model used by Dyno Nobel’s Differential Energy (DE) technology. In the relative hardness model for Caserones, a design is loaded in the drill system, and data is collected during the advance of the blasthole. The collected data includes rpm, torque, pressure, etc. Then, an algorithm using the measured variables while drilling and known relationships between the properties of the rock and the drill's performance is used to classify the average relative hardness of the blasthole in four intervals: hard, medium, soft, and very soft. Optimization techniques and models used in the oil and gas industries to analyze drilling performance were adapted to implement the algorithm. The model uses the concept of mechanical specific energy (MSE). Using the data from the drill, the algorithm identifies the depth where the MSE reaches a minimum to calculate the “relative hardness” for the blasthole under analysis. The results are presented in maps highlighting the areas where hard, medium, soft or very soft rock masses are expected. That information can be used to anticipate areas where explosives with higher energy need to be used or to predict areas of the blast with additional digging difficulties and then lower loading rates. The paper shows examples where “relative hardness” maps are compared to drilling speed excavation rates and other variables.

Technology has no recognized rank in what is called polite literature; the subject-matter of engineering is not supposed to lend itself to artistic treatment; we are the hewers of wood and drawers of water to the high-priests of learning that live on the cold summit above our humbler dwellings. Therefore the hierophants smile at the notion of 'style1-" that curiously personal thingy-in technical writing. The "great art" of Pater, the "inevitable phrase" of Raleigh, the "note of distinction" that Arnold demanded are said to be beyond the scope, as they are supposed to be beside the need, of a writer on geology or engineering. This is a narrow view. Science, no less than belles lettres, calls for the best exercise of the human intelligence; the art of writing should be employed as skilfully and as earnestly in a description of the structure of the Sierra Nevada, or of the construction of a tunnel through the range, as in a rhapsody welcoming the rosy fingers of the dawn. The idea still lingers that fine writing does not befit technology, even though the masters of the Victorian period-Huxley, Tyndall, Ruskin-proved that science is worthy to be arrayed in the best robes that the looms of thought can weave. At the beginning of these lectures I quoted Barrie's remark touching the inability of the scientific man to express himself. That imputation has been passed to the technologist, whose utilitarian pursuits are supposed to make him too clumsy for the refinements of human speech. We may not have acquired the self-consciousness of those writers on Art whose "power of expression is so cultivated that their sensual caterwauling may be almost mistaken for the music of the spheres"; nor can we imitate the politicians, who have the ability to speak far beyond anything that they may have to say; but we too have a litera-

"INTRODUCTION During July and August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the Trego lead-zinc mine, near the town of Platteville in Grart County, Wis. as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the nation's war program.The Bureau of Mines completed eight churn-drill holes and sampled mineralized faces in the mine workings to determine if further exploitation was justified in an area between the mine and a zone previously drilled to the east.Following the investigation described herein, intermittent operations were resumed. "CURRENT BASIS OF GROUND SUPPORT DESIGN ANALYSIS The current strategy used in determining what kinds of support are needed is based on empirical design charts (Grimstad and Barton, 1993). Figure 1 is an example of the topcut analysis used for a 14 foot wide (4.3 meter) drift, which is the current design width used for topcuts at TRJV mine. The majority of our topcuts are situated in ore of the Type IV and Type III weak rock class categories that necessitate the use of bolts, mesh and 2”-4” of shotcrete. This type of empirical chart gives excellent guidelines for the kinds of support, and it is based on case histories of civil tunneling and mining properties. It is a good starting point for determining the kinds of support needed, but not to the detail needed to optimize the number of bolts, type of mesh, or combination of types or strengths of shotcrete. This report is an attempt to help quantify the safety factor and optimum design parameters to include mesh and shotcrete as part of the design criteria and subsequent safety factor.SAFETY FACTOR ANALYSIS: BOLTS ONLY One type of safety factor analysis used at TRJV for the past 7 years is described as the “dead weight” method, developed by Pakalnis (2008). It involves the support of a conservative “dead weight” of rock held in place by bolts in which the depth of failure is approximated as a wedge whose height is one-half of the span. The failure or dead weight wedge resembles a triangular wedge that must be supported by the remainder of the bolts going through the wedge (see Figure 2).The support capacity of the system is determined by the bond strength of the bolts holding up the wedge, which is in turn based on the RMR. The method assumes the total support capacity is the sum of the individual bolt values defined by either the breaking strength or the bond strength of the bolts (whichever is lower) passing through the failure surface."

Abstract The degree of cathodic protection of steel and the anode corrosion rate were determined when anodes and waters of different compositions were used at temperatures similar to those in domestic hot water tanks. Twenty different anode materials, sixteen of them magnesium-zinc-aluminium alloys, were immersed in six different synthetic waters resembling those to be found in various parts of Canada. The results showed that (1) both the degree of cathode protection and the average anode corrosion rate are affected materially by the composition of the anode material and of the water; (2) poor cathode protection is associated with low anode corrosion rate; (3) when the cathode is fully protected, the anode corrosion rate may be comparatively low or comparatively high, depending upon the composttion of the water; (4) an important relationship exists between the magnesium content of the preferred anode and the composition of the water; (5) the degree of protection is increased as the SO4 + Cl concentration of the water is increased and thus as its specific resistance is decreased. Introduction Fairly recently, the use of the active metal magnesium for the cathodic protection of less active metals has received a considerable amount of attention. This interest has been stimulated by the fact that the wartime demand for magnesium was greatly in excess of the present peacetime demand and there is a natural desire to continue operating the large magnesium plants which were built during the war. Information regarding the use of zinc and aluminium for this purpose also has been published. There is a great demand for domestic hot-water tanks which will resist corrosion satisfactorily. This problem is rather complex in view of the fact that the composition of the water used in such tanks varies greatly and depends upon the locality. The present investigation deals with the effect of water composition and anode composition on the cathodic protection of steel under conditions approaching those which exist in hot water tanks.

THE safety of mine workers has received more attention from both State and Federal law-making bodies than any other industry, a fact that shows clearly the hazardous nature of the industry. The last, but by no means the least, of the measures adopted for the protection of mine workers, is workmen's compensation legislation. This is proving to be a powerful instrument for greater safety in the industries, from the fact that special stress is laid not on how the accident happened or who may have been responsible for it, but on how badly the employee is hurt by it. The injured person does not have to employ lawyers to prove his case, because the mere fact of his employment is proof of his right to compensation. The immediate effect of such legislation is the certainty confronting the mine operator that he must pay out large sums for every accident, regardless of its cause, thus adding materially to the cost of the production of his coal. This fact furnished to the operator the strongest incentive to reduce the causes of accidents; not that the operator has ever lacked reasonable consideration for the welfare of his employees and a proper humane interest in their safety, but his engrossment in earning his daily livelihood has been so great that he has not felt that he had the time to devote to the safety of the operation. This time he must now find because of the actual-cash value of the prevention of accidents in his mines. This agency alone proved inadequate to bring about a material improvement because operators have always been willing enough to improve safety conditions when possible to do so within reasonable limits of their financial ability. The requirement in the Workmen's Compensation Laws of several of the States, that the mine operator shall insure as a guarantee of his ability to meet his compensation obligations, has furnished the needed incentive, moral and financial, necessary to the prompt and effective dissemination of a more general knowledge of the causes and

The present concept assumes carrying out the process of controlled nitriding with NH3 alone. This is a simpler process than that using two-component mixes of ammonia diluted with N2 or NH3diss. The regulation of the chemical composition of the atmosphere in the retort, and therefore the regulation of the nitriding potential KN, is obtained through the variation of the inflow rate of NH3 into the retort. What is a completely new things in a relevant process, the inflow of NH3 into the furnace is at times reduced to zero, which widens the range of the gas composition in the retort (and by the same token, of KN). The amount of NH3 introduced into the furnace is regulated (controlled) with the aid of a gas analyzer (for example an infrared analyzer). The gas analyzer opens and closes periodically the NH3 inlet valve with a frequency maintaining a desired gas composition (a desired KN) in the retort. The concept was based on experimental and theoretical investigations in term of thermodynamic and kinetic of gas nitriding. Investigations were carried out in a laboratory furnace with a quartz tube and also in an industrial furnace with a steel retort and a circulating fan. Nitriding was performed using NH3, NH3+H2, NH3+NH3diss. mixtures. In an industrial furnace the supply of NH3 into the retort was periodically closed, though with an operating circulation fan. The studies demonstrated that the growth rate of nitrided layer depends only on the composition of the atmosphere, (or KN), in the retort. It depends neither on a type of atmosphere introduced into furnace (NH3, NH3+NH3diss. or NH3+H2) nor a type of furnace (laboratory with a quartz tube or industrial with steel retort and fan). The results proved also that entirely closing of NH3 supply to the retort does not affect the growth rate of nitrided layer. A detailed analyses of the results was performed in a paper.

In the present study, the possibilities of use of natural zeolitic tuffs from the Skaloma area, Rhodope prefecture, Greece, for the removal of Pb and Zn ions from aqueous solutions has been studied. The equilibrium data were examined for different grain sizes, pH?s and initial concentrations. An apparent kinetic study was also carried out for different time intervals at constant temperature and pulp density. For the chemical equilibrium study the Freundlich isotherm was used. The experimental results verified the favored behavior of zeolite on lead ions and the quick kinetic of the process whilst the efficiency of the ion exchange on zinc is rather limited. The grain size of the material did not greatly affect the performance of the process. The removal of metal ions worked better at lower pH. The Freundlich isotherms are in good agreement with the experimental data.
