Newmont’s Phoenix mine started production in March of 2006. Due to the extreme hardness of the ore, the mill has struggled to meet throughput projections. Grinding studies showed that optimizing the existing circuit would not achieve budgeted throughput. These studies also showed that the pebble crusher was being underutilized due to the inability of the SAG mill to break the rock. The concept was developed to supplement the feed to the existing pebble crusher with a secondary crusher. Models of this process looked favorable so a portable crusher was installed to test the process. The temporary crusher was successful at increasing the throughput by 7% and based on the operating data, plans are currently being developed to install a permanent secondary crushing system in front of the SAG mill. This paper will review the results from the test crusher and the flow sheet for the permanent secondary crusher.

Dynamic properties of the drilled shaft foundations supporting Doremus Avenue Bridge were determined by forced vibration testing. The main objectives of the substructure testing at Doremus Avenue Bridge were: (1) site evaluation with respect to the dynamic soil properties, and, (2) shaft evaluation for the purpose of definition of their dynamic stiffness. The site characterization entailed crosshole testing for the purpose of evaluation of the shear modulus profile. The drilled shaft impedance evaluation was done through forced excitation using an electromagnetic shaker. The responses of the tested shaft, as well as the response of adjacent shafts, were measured for the purpose of evaluation of the shaft interaction. To gain a better insight into the shaft dynamics, one of the shafts was instrumented with five triaxial geophones distributed along the full length of the shaft. The scope and results of the site characterization, shaft impedance and shaft interaction evaluation are presented.

Many balling and gradation system6 generate self- similar size distributions of the agglomerates. Inspection of the experimental data shows that this is also true of the steady state distributions resulting from the granulation of coarse, partially wet powders, for example, the fertilizer feeds. This result is exploited in the derivations of a number of simple and useful relationships that are pertinent to the analysis of these agglomeration systems. The bonding liquid demand of the granulating charge is a third order polynomial function of the dimensionless ratio of feed particle size to median granule diameter in the weight-fraction distribution. The median size, in turn, is the scale factor or characteristic size parameter in the similarity distribution. The granule size distribution, therefore, is completely specified by the liquid content and the similarity function, and so are the process efficiency and the ungranulated component In the product at steady state.

"A computational study of the effect of thermocapillary convection on melting of a droplet under the influence of an incident uniform heat flux is presented. The computations are based on an iterative, finite-volume numerical procedure using primitive dependent variables, whereby the time-dependent continuity, momentum and energy equations in the spherical coordinate system are solved. During the early periods of the melting process, conduction mode of heat transfer is dominant. As the thermocapillary convection is strengthened due to the growth of the melt zone, melting on the side of the droplet is observed to be much faster in comparison to the conduction-only case. Due to the skewedness of the temperature field, a new recirculating vortex is created which promotes melting within the droplet. The effects of the change in the sign of the surface-tension temperature coefficient on the melting pattern are also investigated.1. IntroductionMelting and solidification of materials are important processes which are encountered in nature and numerous industrial applications. Due to the recent upsurge of interest in such processes as spray casting, space radiators, rapid solidification, purification of materials, containerless processing, etc., there is a need to analyze the transport phenomena of melting and solidification in spherical configurations. Specifically, the effect of thermocapillary convection on the melting of metallic droplets has not been addressed at all. Only a few authors have studied the transport phenomena without phase change in spherical droplets. Oliver and DeWitt [l] worked out a series solution for the thermal and surface-tension-driven flow fields for a droplet experiencing an irradiant energy flux in the microgravity environment. Kudo et al. [2] solved the coupled momentum and energy equations numerically for the same problem without dropping the convective terms. Due to the nonexistence of any previous work on transport phenomena during the thermocapillary-assisted melting of metal droplets, this study was initiated to elucidate the features of the phenomenon."

INTRODUCTION There are now over twenty years since the radiological characteristics of the brazilian regions of Araxá, Tapira and Barreiros, three locations adjacent to each other, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, started being surveyed by investigators from the Instituto de Biofísica da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IB/UFRJ), Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ), and New York University (NYU) (Roser and Cullen, 1958; Cullen et al, 1980). The importance of the Araxá apatite – Ca5,(P04)3(OH, F, Cl) - and pyrochlore - NaCaNB206F - for the production of large quantities of fertilizers and niobium was early recognized (Roser and Cullen, 1958). Interesting data have been gathered and published throughout the years on the contents of naturally occurring radionuclides in geologic materials, soils, grass, foods and waters of the Araxá region (Eisenbud, et al., 1964; Penna Franca, et al., 1965a, b; Roser et al., 1966; Penna Franca et al., 1970; Cullen, 1977; Penna Franca, 1977; Cullen and Paschoa, 1978; and Cullen et al., 1980). The radioactivity of the Araxá region is associated with mineral deposits of niobium rich pyrochlore and phosphate rich apatite. There are in this region mineral ores with 3 to 5% pyrochlore with 2 to 2.5% Th as Th02 and 50 to 150 ppm U308 in the matrix, while the apatite deposits contain up to 150 ppm U308 and a thorium concentration similar to that of the pyrochlore deposits (Paschoa and Palacios, 1981). As an indication of the high thorium content of the Araxá soils the 228Ra and 224Ra activity concentrations were reported to range from 10.6±0.2 to 62.4±0.7 pCi228Ra/g soil in 7 samples and 2.1±0.1 to 104±1 pCi224Ra/g soil in 19 samples (Cullen, et al., 1966). The uptake of radium isotopes by edible roots vegatables and fruits growing in the soils of the Araxá region can be illustrated by the data listed in Table I. The biological availability of natural radium isotopes in some segments of the Araxá soil allows a large variation in the 228Ra, 224Ra and 226Ra concentrations in vegetables and edible roots, as can be seen in Table I. This fact makes quite difficult a quantitative local assessment of the radiological implications of mining the Araxá mineral deposits of pyrochlore and apatite for production of niobium and phosphate fertilizers, respectively; since one cannot easily separate the naturally occurring from the technogically enhanced radionuclide contents of foods. The position of the city of Araxá inside the contour of the state of Minas Gerais appears in the upper part of Figure 1, which shows the outlined map of Brazil with the positions of the cities Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro also indicated. The lower part of Figure 1 is a representation of the Araxá region in an expanded scale, which indicates the locations of the pyrochlore and apatite deposits in relation to the city of Araxá, as well as the nearby hydrographic basins. The distance between the city of Araxá and the pyrochlore deposit is about 8 km, and between the pyrochlore and apatite deposits is 4 km. This paper deals tentatively with the radiological implications of the industrial operations taking place in the Araxá region for the exploration of the pyrochlore and apatite deposits. However, one must bear in mind, firstly, that the radiological implications of these industrial activities are by far too complex to be covered adequately by the limited amount of data to be presented in this paper, and secondly, that such implications cannot be considered of local character only. INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS The commercial exploration of the Araxá deposits of pyrochlore and apatite started only few years ago, motivated by the increasing demand of niobium and phosphate fertilizers in Brazil and the world. As a consequence of the industrial operations in Araxá, a redistribution of the uranium, thorium, and radium originally present in the local deposits of pyrochlore and apatite started occurring in the seventies, with possible radiological implications for the Araxá region and its immediate surroundings, not to mention the destinations of the end products of such industrial operations. A literature review on the radioactivity associated with the extration industries of selected minerals was made by the USEPA (Bliss, 1978). The low level radioactive wastes of the industries for copper ore mining and rare metals processing have been object of particular attention (Fitzgerald, Jr., 1976; Eng, et al., 1979), but the short and long term implications of the radioactivity associated with the niobium industry were also subjects of concern (Knight and Makepeace, 1978). Recently, high 232Th and 226Ra concentrations in samples from the tin mining industry in West Malaysia were reported (Hu et al., 1981). The surface, gain boundary, and twin boundary energies, as well as the surface diffusion coefficient, of cobalt were determined from tests at 1354°C in pure hydrogen. A value of 1970 ergs per sq cm was calculated for the surface energy, using the zero creep method. It was possible to measure the creep strains at room temperature because the phase transformation was accompanied by negligible irreversible strain and no kinking. Established techniques based on interference microscopy were used to obtain values for the other three properties. The gain boundary and twin boundary energies were 650 ad 12.7 ergs per sq cm, respectively, while a value of 2.75 x l0 sq cm per sec was determined for the surface dufusion coefficient. In the course of a general study of cobalt and cobalt-base alloys, information was required about the surface energy of cobalt. Hence, the present program was undertaken to measure the interfacial free energy, or, briefly, the surface energy, of the solid-vapor interface of cobalt. The microcreep method was selected for this measurement because other surface properties could also be determined from the accompanying thermal grooving at grain boundaries and twin boundaries. A brief summary of the methods for determining the various surface properties follows. At very high temperatures and under applied stresses too small to initiate slip, small-diameter wires will change in length by the process of diffu-sional creep described by Herring.1 The wires acquire the familiar bamboo structure and increase or decrease in length in direct proportion to the net force on the specimen. For a specimen experiencing a zero creep rate, the applied load, wo, necessary to offset the effects of the surface energy, y,, and grain boundary energy, y b, is given by the relation: where r is the wire radius and n is the number of grains per unit length of wire. The first results obtained from wire specimens were reported by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff.' udin3 later corrected these results for the effect of grain boundary energy. The grain boundary energy is determined from measurements of the dihedral angle 8 of the groove which develops by thermal etching at the grain boundary-free surface junction. For an equilibrium configuration: Measurements of the angle 8 can be made on the creep specimens4'5 or on sheet material, as was done in this investigation by a method employing interference microscopy.= If the vapor pressure is low, the rate at which grain boundary grooves widen is determined primarily by surface diffusion and, to a lesser extent, by bulk diffusion. The surface diffusion coefficient, D,, is obtained from interferometric measurements of the groove width as a function of the annealing time, t. As predicted by Mullins~ and verified by experiment, the distance, w,, between the maxima of the humps formed on either side of the grain boundary increases in proportion to if grooving proceeds by surface diffusion alone. For this case: where fl is the atomic volume and n is the number of atoms per square centimeter of surface. When volume diffusion also contributes to the widening, the surface diffusion contribution can be extracted from the data by the method described by Mullins and shewmon.8 Where a pair of twin boundaries intersects a free surface, a groove with an included angle of A + B (using the groove figure and notations of Robertson and shewmong) forms by thermal etching at one twin boundary-free surface junction. If the "torque terms", i.e., the terms in the Herring10 equations describing the orientation dependence of the surface energy, are sufficiently large, an "inverted groove" with an included angle of 360 deg-A'-B' develops at the other intersection. The angles A + B and A' + B' are measured interferometrically. When the angle, , between the twinning plane and the macroscopic surface plane is near 90 deg, the twin boundary energy is calculated from the relation: 1) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Five-mil-diam wire containing 56 parts per million impurities was used for making ten creep specimens. These specimens had about 15 mm gage lengths with appended loops of wire and carried loads (the specimen weight below the midpoint of the gage length) ranging from 3.7 to 149.8 mg. The wires were hung inside a can made from 99.6 pct pure cobalt sheet. Beneath the wires were placed small specimens of 20-mil-thick, 99.9982 pct pure cobalt sheet from which the relative twin boundary and grain boundary energies and the surface diffusion coefficient were measured. All the specimens were annealed at a temperature of 1354" i 3°C which is 92 pct of the absolute melting point of cobalt. The furnace atmosphere was 99.9 pct pure hydrogen that was purified further by a Deoxo catalytic unit, magnesium perchlorate, and a liquid-nitrogen cold trap. The efficiency of operation of a fixed-bed adsorption unit is infEuenced both by the absolute adsorption capacity of the bed and by the rate of adsorption. This paper describer studies of adsorption rate which were conducted in an experimental unit designed such that conditions existing in the treatment of high-pressure natural-gas mixtures could be duplicated. Variables investigated included pressure, temperature, gas composition, adsorbent particle size, depth of packed bed and gas velocity. The adequacy of a simplified mathematical model for predicting the observed phenomena was tested. A correlation is preserited which relates adsorption rate to the process variables stlldied. This correlation is useful in combination with the matheinatical model. INTRODUCTION Of the techniques available for contacting adsorbent particles with fluid streams to be treated, fixed-bed adsorption columns offer definite advantages in simplicity and ease of operation. As a result, they are often used in preference to others for such petroleum industry applications as dehydration and purification of natural gas and hydrocarbon recovery. Fixed-bed adsorption units usually consist of two or more towers filled with a desired adsorbent and operated in a cyclic manner. While one is being used to process the main flow stream, the others are undergoing regeneration to remove the adsorbed phase. When the tower on stream becomes saturated with the preferentially adsorbed material, the roles of the towers are switched, and the freshly regenerated tower is placed on stream. Cacle duration is determined by the bed capacity under the process conditions and by the flow rate through the bed. The sharpness of separation which can be effected is a function of both the absolute capacity of the bed and the rate of adsorption in the bed. The effect of rate for a particular set of conditions is evidenced by the sharpness or diffuse-ness of the adsorption front as it advances through the bed. Since data needed for design of adsorption units to treat high-pressure natural-gas systems were not available, an experimental program was designed to investigate the effects of different variables upon adsorption rate in fixed beds. In the present paper, effects of gas composition, column length, temperature, pressure, adsorbent particle size and flow rate (actual linear flow rate of the gas) are shown, and utility of a simplified mathematical model for describing the process is discussed. As gas enters the top of a cool, clean bed of adsorbent, preferentially adsorbed materials are stripped from the main flow stream by the uppermost particle layers. As these layers become saturated with a particular component, new supplies of this component are carried further down the column until fresh adsorbent is encountered. An adsorption wave thus moves through the column as material is supplied to saturate succeeding elements of the bed. Adsorption from a Multicomponent gas stream occurs as a succession of such moving waves corresponding to the different components in the gas. The leading edge of an adsorption wave for a component of a natural-gas stream moving through a bed of a common commercial adsorbent such as silica gel would be sharp but for the influence of certain broadening fac tors. These factors include a nonuniform velocity profile in the bed, longitudinal dispersion or mixing in the main gas stream, and the time required for a molecule to migrate from the main gas stream and be adsorbed at a site within the body of an adsorbent particle. If packing is uniform and the ratio of column to particle diameter is greater than approximately 15:1, the first factor is relatively unimportant' Longitudinal mixing is of importance only for the case of moderately high mass transfer with extremely slow flow rates.' The sharpness of an adsorption front, therefore, is, primarily a function of the rate of adsorption or the time required to saturate a particle of zdsorbent. Two methods for defining adsorption rate are used in this work. The first is a normalized or relative rate which describes the rate of saturation of a differential element of the packed bed. This can be measured by observing the time required for the concentration of the preferentially adsorbed material in the effluent gas from the bed to rise from zero to a value equal to that in the inlet gas stream. The second definition describes the absolute rate of mass transfer from the gaseous to the adsorbed phase. This definition is used in a mathematical description of the adsorption process. If the concentration of a component in the gas strcam leaving an adsorption column is measured and plotted as a function of time, a curve such as that shown in Fig. I results. It is seen that for a period of time the effluent gas is devoid of the component under consideration. As the bed approaches saturation, a small percentage of this material will appear in the effluent gas. The concentration will then rise with time, or increasing cumulative gas flow, until it is equal to that in the inlet gas stream. If adsorp-

Miscible phase displacement of oil from reservoirs has been emphasized in the past few years. The reason for this emphasis lies in the high oil recovery attainable by this process. Removal of capillary effects in the reservoir leads to recoveries approaching 100 per cent in the area contacted by the miscible phase. The miscible slug process is one means of obtaining a miscible displacement. Here a band or slug of I,PG is injected into the reservoir prior to gas injection. The idea is to maintain the band of LPG "wedged" between the gas and oil phases and thus achieve a miscible phase displacement. A second method lor achieving miscibility is through the injection of a gas which is not miscible with the reservoir fluid but which develops a zone of miscibility in [he reservoir through mass trans-ier with the reservoir oil.' This mass transfer results in either an enrichment of the lean injected gas by intermediates from the oil or an enrichment of the oil by intermediates from a rich injection gas or one that has been enriched on the surface by LPG addition. We are interested here in discussing the process in which miscibility is developed at the displacement front by the evaporation of interrnediatcs from the oil phase into the gas phase. This process "builds up" its own slug of miscible material at the displacement front and therefore does not require the injection of LPG to obtain miscibil-ily. Each process has its own area of applicability. Generally, the high pressure gas process is applicable only with reservoir fluids which con-!ain a high concentration of inter- mediates. If the high pressure gas process is technically feasible at pressures less than 4,500 psi, it is probably more desirable economically than the slug process. The slug process has broad applicability in the shallower reservoirs and with reservoir fluids which contain a relatively low concentration of LPG and natural gasoline constituents. This paper deals with some new concepts of the high pressure gas injection process where it is proposed that flue gas can be substituted for hydrocarbon gas without sacrificing our goal of miscibility. MECHANISM Introduction Considerable effort has been devoted to study of the mechanics ot the high pressure gas injection proc-one generalization result-ing from some of these studies was that the composition of the injected gas is relatively unimportant in establishing the miscibility pressure* for a given reservoir fluid. This generalization is correct for the composition range of gases typically encountered in the field. Two such gases are a gasoline plant tail gas containing 85 per cent methane and 15 per cent ethane, and a field separator gas containing 70 per cent methane and 30 per cent heavier components. The most important factor which sets the miscibility pressure in the operation is the reservoir fluid composition, particularly the concentration of LPG-natural gasoline constituents. The injected gas is the agent by which the LPG-natural gasoline constituents are concentrated at the displacing front to create a miscible displacement. Based on these results, it appeared feasible that some inexpensive gas, such as flue gas, might be substituted for hydrocarbon gas for use in the high pressure gas process. A re-examination of the phase relations of the high pressure gas injection process should clarify the principle behind using flue gas (essentially nitrogen) as an injection gas. Three Component Diagram The phase relations of the high pressure gas injection process have been illustrated by the use of the three component diagrams.'," In Fig. 1 we have arbitrarily represented the multi-component reservoir system by three components; methane, ethane through hexane, and heptanes plus. The solid curve ABC is the phase boundary curve. It represents the locus of compositions which have fixed saturation pressure at a fixed temperature; the lower branch AB shows bubble point compositions, the upper branch BC, the dew point compositions. Point B is the coniposition of the critical mixture at this temperature and pressure. The dashed lines (tie lines) connect vapor and liquid compositions which are in equilibrium. Let us consider Reservoir Fluid D which we wish to displace in 21 miscible manner by gas injection. Let us further restrict the discussion to the case where miscibility between an injection gas and the reservoir fluid at the displacement front is developed by gas enrichment in the reservoir. For this case, any gas whose composition lies between Points C and E on the right side of the three component diagram can be used to give a miscible displacement of Reservoir Fluid D. This is true because the more mobile injected gas moves faster than the displaced oil and is in continuous contact with virgin oil at the displacement front. This paper presents three general approaches towards the solution of the stress distribution and the behavior of tubular connections as used in offshore well drilling structures. First, the possibilities of using plastic models and photoelasticity techniques in evaluating the stress distribution in gusset plate connections are analyzed. The results of photoelastic studies on the stress distribution in the in-plane gusset plate of two-dimensional joints are presented. The influence of the configuration of the gusset plate (with and without cut-outs) is discussed. Second, the paper deals with recent developments and applications of computer programs to analyze connections with directly inter-welded tubes and with gusset plates. The possibilities and limitations of these programs are discussed. Stress patterns analyzed with these programs are presented for different joint configurations. Finally, the basic test procedures and results of a test on a tubular joint under static and alternating loads are discussed. INTRODUCTION The effective design of tubular connections as encountered in offshore well drilling towers or floating platforms has been complicated basically by the radial flexibility of the tube walls. This flexibility is a source of severe stress concentrations which can initiate an early failure of these joints. In an attempt to reduce the influence of the wall flexibility of the column tube, certain joints are presently designed by inter-welding the incoming branch members. In those designs, the force acting normal to the chord tube can be reduced considerably. A second group of joints incorporate gusset plates or stiffening rings to stiffen the column wall and to distribute the incoming branch member forces over a larger part of this wall. A third approach to improve the stress distribution in a tubular joint is to increase the wall thickness of the column member. This can be achieved by simply applying a thicker wall section in the vicinity of the joint. A fourth possibility to restrain the radial flexibility of the tube wall is to fill the column member with concrete. Also, a single, cast steel seat welded to the column tube can be used to improve the stress distribution in this wall. Although all these designs improve, in general, the state of stress in the column wall, the altered stiffness often causes the development of critically stressed areas in the web members. At the same time the actual design in most instances is decisively influenced by the site which governs the depth and controls the forces produced by waves, earthquakes and ice flow. Also, the towing, erection and foundation requirements of offshore structures can affect the actual design selection. Because of the complexity of the structural configuration of tubular joints, the stress analysis of these connections has necessarily been based on simplified and often crude assumptions. For the earlier and smaller type of connections with about 4-ft diameter column sections, the primary problem was to evaluate the relative stiffness of the column wall section and the load transfer between joint members. Due to the recent developments of offshore drilling structures with increasingly larger connections (e.g., column diameter. 32 ft; web members, 8.5 ft) this problem has become even more critical. One design philosophy for such large joints follows a member-to-member connection with radially heavy reinforced column sections. This radial stiffness can be attained by closely spaced and intensively stiffened horizontal diaphrams together with vertical stiffeners. A second solution incorporates a concrete-filled section between the outer and inner walls of the column tube. Another philosophy considers large gusset-plated joints. The problem in these joints is to develop an effective load transfer between the branch tubes and the gusset plate and to minimize the stress concentrations in the member walls as effectively as possible. Several concepts are followed to achieve this gradual transfer between web-member walls and gusset plates. Because the number of joints in these huge platforms is limited compared to the over-all size, a proper design of these joints is even more important than was the case for the many joints in the smaller, but multi-legged towers. A failure of one of those ultra-large joints could well cause the complete collapse of such a structure. Under these circumstances an accurate analysis of the large joints is of the greatest importance, together with information regarding the expected behavior of such joints under critical alternating load conditions. Recent applications of photoelastic model techniques have proved to be quite effective in evaluating the elastic behavior of such joints. Although a complete study of such connections is quite well possible with present-day photoelastic techniques, it might often be feasible and necessary to limit the objectives and to restrict these investigations to the study of a specific aspect of the joint. THE experiments described in this paper were made at the Washoe Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., for the purpose of determining the relative speed of elimination of the iron, sulphur and arsenic during the process of bessemerizing copper-mattes. The samples were taken from a horizontal "barrel" converter, 8 ft. in diameter and 12 ft. 6 in. long, having an average charge of 9 tons of matte, and blown with a 16-1b. air-pressure. All samples were taken with the blast on, turning the converter from its normal blowing-position to nearly verti¬cal, so that a conical mold, with a long handle attached to a horizontal rod, could be introduced from a platform above the converter into the mouth of the converter and a sample taken. The difficulties of taking a sample with the blast on are appar¬ent, and the irregularities of the lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 can be readily accounted for by the amount of slag in the samples. On the whole, the plotting of the results gives comparatively uniform lines, considering the conditions. The samples were taken by the regular sampling-force of the works at 10-min. intervals, as shown in Tables I., II and III, which also give the chemical analysis of the samples so taken. The test shown in Table I. was made with a new converter; that of Table II with a converter that had made three charges and had been cleaned out; that of Table III with a converter that bad blown one charge to white metal, and had then been " washed " out and used for the test. In plotting these results, it was necessary to take, as a basis, the percentage of copper in the samples. This basis does not exactly represent the true condition, since the volume is constantly decreasing and a certain quantity of copper passes into the slag, but it is as near as can be obtained in practice. The well-known method of C. Schlumberger, Mise a la masse, has become a popular method again in ore exploration in Norway after many years of dominance by EM methods. The principle of the method is to place a current electrode within a conducting ore body and remove the other electrode to a great distance. (Figure 1). Often it is convenient to place a return electrode on each side of the area explored. The method is best suited for ores that have a conductivity contrast, relative to the host rock, of several orders of magnitude. The potential drop within the ore itself may then be neglected and the ore contact against the rock may be regarded as an equipotential surface. One may say that the ore body is electrically charged. Therefore, in Norway the method is now most often called the Charged Potential Method (abbreviated CP). The most usual way to present data obtained by CP, is to draw equipotential lines based on potential values measured in profiles on the surface. Such a potential map gives an immediate picture of the outcrop of the ore and also indicates disturbing conductors in the neighborhood. It may also be useful to look at the potential profile and its horizontal gradient along the strike axis of the potential map. These profiles may give information about the strike length of the conductor. Figure 2 shows the theoretical profiles of potential and gradient along the axis of the potential picture on the surface over a charged line plunging 15 degrees. It may be seen that the maximum of the gradient curve clearly indicates the lower end of the conductor. Figure 3 shows the corresponding pro- files over a charged line plunging 45 degrees. In this case, it is not possible to see an indication on the curve of the lower end. Only curve fitting could help interpretation in this case.

Data analysis of pentane and hexane adsorption from natural gas in a fixed bed of silica gel shows that constant length mass transfer zones form, the curvature of the adsorption isotherm controls the growth of the mass transfer zone and surface diffusion of molecules inside the silica gel particle controls the mass transfer rate. Curvature of the hexane isothem is more than the curvature of the pentane isotherm. Because of this curvature the hexane adsorption zones reached a constant length. In contrast, the pentane adsorption zones were always increasing in length during each run. A procedure was developed to obtain correct mass transfer coefficients using effluent curve slopes. These transfer roefficients increase with the amount of hydrocarbon adsorbed on the silica gel particle. The characteristic shape of the hexane effluent curves also show that molecular diffusion inside the silica gel particle controls the adsorption rate of pentane and hexane. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanisms that control the dynamic adsorption of hydrocarbons from a natural gas onto silica gel. Before one can deal effectively with multicomponent adsorption, the transfer mechanisms by which a single hydrocarbon component is adsorbed from the gas stream must be defined. Two principal investigations of this system have been published ' and indicate that diffusion through the gas around the particle controls the adsorption rate. Some of the experimental observations in each study either do not support this transfer mechanism or are inconsistent with the mathematical model used in analysis. In this study surface diffusion of molecules inside the particle controls the mass transfer rate of pentane and hexane. This mechanism is indicated by the effluent curve shape for a constant length transfer zone and by the variation of the mass transfer coefficient with concentration of the adsorbed hydrocarbon. THEORY AND DEFINITIONS — MATHEMATICAL MODELS Mathematical solutions for the isothermal adsorption of a trace component from a carrier gas are derived from three relationships: the mass balance or continuity equation, the equilibrium relationship between the gas and solid phases, and a mass transfer rate equation. The transfer rate is proportional to the adsorbate concentration gradient within either the gas or solid phase. Mathematical solutions of these equations usually give the adsorbate concentration as a function of time and distance from the bed inlet. That part of the bed in which the adsorbate concentration changes from a maximum to a minimum value is called the transfer zone. This transfer zone is directly related to a plot of the effluent concentration vs time which has a characteristic S-shape. This general shape is determined by the continuity equation and occurs in many processes of diffusional transfer.

A new departure of unusual importance in Institute annals was in-augurated by the trip of President Philip N. Moore to the Local Sections at Nevada, Southern California, San Francisco, Seattle, Spokane, Montana, Utah, and Colorado. Everywhere the visit of the President was the occasion of an enthusiastic and successful meeting, which is reflected in the account, published under the different Sections in this and other Bulletins. The President also joined the members of the Columbia Section in their visit to Nelson, British Columbia, at the International Mining Convention, which was attended by mining engineers of Canada and the United States. The President of the Canadian Mining Institute, as well as the officers and members of the Western Section also attended this convention. For full particulars we recommend to our readers the ac- count of this very interesting meeting, which is given on another page of this. Bulletin. It is believed that this is the first meeting between the mining engineers of America and any other country since America joined the Allies. The Secretary of the Institute accompanied the President at the first four meetings and was expecting to attend the others also, but was called home by a death in his family.

Equipment capital operating costs represent a significant portion of the total cost of most mining operations, and a variety of computerized methods have been developed to assist in the selection and effective use of this equipment. The questions to be answered and the tools available to answer these questions vary with the type of mine to be analyzed, the stage of development of the mining venture, the size of the operation, the details required, and the technical or economic objectives to be reached. Even though a majority of publications are directed towards open pit mining operations, the underground environment is not neglected. In the early planning stages of a mining venture, equipment selection is the problem to be solved. The simplest computer systems are designed to' automate time consuming manual tasks. A data base is supplied to and maintained by the user, which describes the technical and economic characteristics of available equipment. The user specifies the physical environment within which the equipment will be used and chooses from the data base a combination of loading and transport equipment. The role of the computer is to detemine the production which will be likely reached, the associated costs, and other relevant statistics. This approach is most helpful when modeling small operations or isolated parts of larger operations.

The flotation behaviour of phoscorite from the Phosphate Development Corporation was measured in a pilot plant, the flotation cells in the plant being varied in configuration so as to operate with or without circulating loads. The ore was floated in a batch cell so that the parameters for a kinetic model could be estimated, and these parameters were then used in a flotation-plant simulator, which is based on the kinetic model, in the prediction of the performance of a pilot flotation plant operating on phoscorite. The simulator predictions compare well with the measured performance of the ore in the pilot plant, but the comparison shows that the kinetic model is not completely adequate for the prediction of performance in continuous flotation plants. The model is weakest in its ability to model the behaviour of the froth phase. The flotation behaviour of the ore could be adequately described when it was assumed that the apatite and gangue each consist of floatable and unfloatable components. The effect of particle size on the specific flotation-rate constant of apatite was found to have a maximum at 85 µm and to fall to zero at 400 µm that for the gangue had a maximum at 50 µm and was zero at 350 µm.

Recently an experiment was completed at the Golden Sunlight Mine, a property owned by Placer Dome Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, to measure the Body Waves entering their highwall created by blasting. The purpose of the study was to assess the damaging effects of blasting on the highwall, in order to further slope stability. Stress and Strain experienced in the earth that is created as a result of blasting can be determined by knowing several important pieces of information. These include the compressional and shear wave particle velocities initiated by blasting, the Body Wave travel velocities in both the shear and longitudinal direction, and the densities of the rock in question. A series of equations based on wave theory can then be used to determine the stress and strain affecting the highwalls. The Blasting Engineer can then use this information to design blasts that create peak particle velocities less than levels that maintain the integrity of the highwalls. This paper first discusses the experiment used to measure the Body Wave velocities. It then traces through the subsequent calculations necessary to generate the information needed by the Blasting Engineers, the Mining Engineers, the Geological Engineers, and the Geophysicists to design blasts and develop open pit plans to alleviate unstable highwall conditions.

Magnetic Measurements on Auriferous Veins in Brazil. The present paper gives a few details of the work and the results obtained The problem was difficult and the results not particularly brilliant, according to the author, but the data are believed to represent another advance in the application of the magnetic method of prospecting The instrument used was a Schmidt-Lloyd vertical magnetic field balance made by Askania Werke It did not prove of value for the discovery of auriferous veins of the type there found It is believed, however, that fair results may be expected when studying the continuation of veins that disappear under alluvial covering The data thus obtained should be of exceptional value in directing the excavational work of prospecting A short appendix to the paper gives the results of magnetic observations in the Sao Jeronymo coal mine

Previous Publications THE first report on the slag viscosity work of the Bureau of Mines was made by one of the authors 1 in 1916. It was concerned chiefly with, the method of measurement. A paper 2 on this phase of the work was presented to the Institute in February, 1917, and a similar paper 3 was communicated to the Faraday Society. Purpose and Scope of the Slag Viscosity Tables Following the development of a suitable method, the next step in the investigation was the measurement of slag viscosity over a wide range of temperature and composition, and the arrangement of this experimental data in the form of tables for the use of the blast-furnace operator. It is believed that this information, if used intelligently, should help the operator to reduce losses in production caused by off-grade pig iron, to improve fuel economy, to promote operating efficiency, and to extend present-day practice to meet the increasing need of smelting lean and complex ores.
