Four, general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part off the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremy1 and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed' the presence of large quantities of organic' sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Drown5

The major parameters affecting dust flow at a longwall face are dust generation rate, air velocity and quantity distribution at the face, and the characteristics of the dust such as particle size distribution, density etc. Previous studies have identified the longwall shearer as the major source of the airborne dust in the faces. In this study, the effects of dust generation rate and shearer speed on the levels of ambient dust concentration are investigated. A series of experiments were performed under controlled conditions in a full scale simulated longwall face at the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of U.S. Bureau of Mines using characterized bituminous coal dust. A trickle-duster was moved up and down the longwall face to simulate the shearer. In each experiment, a known amount of dust was dispersed by the trickle-duster into the air and the average dust generation rate was calculated. At the same time, gravimetric respirable and total airborne dust samples were collected and air velocity measurements were made along the face. The experimental conditions, data, and results are presented and discussed in this paper. The airborne dust concentration and air velocity data indicate that the concentration increases and air velocity decreases with distance from headgate for the first half of the face. Towards the tailgate, the air velocity increases with increasing distance but the dust concentration levels off with some variations. The data show that a higher dust generation rate results in higher dust concentration levels. More importantly, the data show that the rate of increase of airborne dust concentration is higher than that of dust generation rate. For the same air velocity distribution and dust generation rate, lower speed of the dust source results in higher airborne dust levels at the face.

ALTHOUGH the earliest use of rubber-tired haulage was in Illinois in 1936, the first unit of this type of equipment used in West Virginia was shipped into the state in 1938. All units placed in West Virginia mines have been of the shuttle-car type. The Katherine Coal Mining Co., at Lumberport, W. Va., was the second company in the United States to install shuttle cars and the Gay Coal and' Coke Co., at [ ] Mt. Gay, W. Va., was the first company in the country to install the thin-bed type of shuttle car. On Oct. 8, 1940, nine companies in the state were using 41 shuttle cars, of which 10 cars at three mines were of the thin-bed type. All shuttle cars of the low type were in the southern fields and all of the high type were in northern West Virginia. At that time several units were in the process of delivery. The data in this paper were collected in the field by Mr. Schroder in connection with graduate work on mechanical loading of coal in West Virginia by mobile loaders. In the course of his field work he visited five mines in the state that were using shuttle cars. All of these mines were in high-volatile coal beds of strong structure. [ ] The more pertinent data obtained at the mines visited are given in Table I. The maximum distance of shuttle-car haul is the distance between the transfer station and the farthermost place. Tonnage per loading unit per foot of bed thickness is to some degree a measure of relative efficiency, especially if the different operations are working the same bed or have somewhat similar conditions. The usual analytical determinations made in analyzing coal are comprised in the proximate and ultimate analysis and the determination of calorific value. The proximate analysis includes determinations of moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash; the ultimate analysis determinations of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and ash. The proximate analysis is an empirical process, and the results, obtained, especially for volatile matter and fixed carbon, are materially influenced by the method of conducting the determinations. This fact must be kept in mind in comparing coal analyses from different laboratories for classification purposes. Unless these laboratories have followed the same standard methods, differences due to variations in the analytical methods may, in some cases, be large enough to change the classification of the coal. It is unfortunate that the determinations of volatile matter and fixed carbon, which are most used in coal classification, are the two that are subject to the greatest variations. Moisture comes next in the scale of variation. The ultimate analysis is less influenced by method, since it comprises the determination of definite chemical elements. However, even the ultimate analysis is subject to errors, due to inorganic carbon from carbonates and to inorganic hydrogen from water. For these reasons it is evident that the Committee on Coal Classification must be informed on the evolution of methods of coal analysis in America and the average differences in analytical results that may be expected from variations in methods. The committee should be informed also on which methods should be accepted as standard for classifying coal and on the magnitude of the differences in results that may be expected from duplicate samples of the same coal sent to different laboratories for analysis by the same standard methods. It is the purpose of the present paper to provide this information. The subject will be discussed under the following main heads:

As is well known, the alloys of iron containing 18 ± per cent chromium, 8* per cent nickel and less than 1.2 per cent carbon exhibit the same allotropic modifications as iron. The face-centered cubic or gamma phase is stable at high temperatures and the body-centered cubic or alpha ferrite is presumably stable at room temperature. The transformation from the gamma phase to the alpha phase in alloys of the above composition (18-8 or stainless steel) is sluggish; even moderately rapid cooling permits the retention of the gamma phase. Cold-work, however, causes the transformation from gamma to alpha to occur at room temperatures. It is difficult, nevertheless, to induce complete transformation regardless of the method of cold-working. Since metallographic polishing is very effective in transforming the surface austenite to ferrite, as indicated by the magnetic studies of Buehl and Wulff,1 it was decided to investigate the phenomenon by electron diffraction methods. Apparatus The apparatus used (Fig. 1) was a hot-filament type employing movable slits, similar to that described by Germer.2 The sample-to-photographic plate distance was 69 cm. and the accelerating voltage 30 kv. Since electrons do not in general follow geometrical paths, it is necessary that either the electron source or the sample be movable in a plane normal to the beam. In this case the sample is fixed and the electron source is movable. The source is adjusted until the shadow of the sample appears in the brightest part of the beam as viewed on the fluorescent screen, then the slits composing the two pinholes are inoved into position one by one. The system is evacuated by means of a mercury diffusion pump backed up with a Cenco Hypervac oil pump. Pressures lower than 10- mm. of Hg are read on a calibrated ionization gauge.

FREQUENTLY the careful engineer puts the word porphyry in quotation marks or precedes it with "so-called," when he writes of the Porphyry Copper mines. This is done by way of serving notice that he is aware that the term is not a precise one, though no one who is informed on the subject would in any event misinterpret it. The name originated from the fact that the rock containing the copper at Utah Copper, Morenci, Nevada Consolidated, and Braden-the first four to be developed-was in each instance known as porphyry. The term was convenient; and when Ray, Miami, and inspiration came along they fell into the Porphyry category even though the ore consisted essentially of a rock called schist instead of porphyry. The word is not inclusive enough; nor as a matter of fact is it sufficiently exclusive. Numerous copper deposits occur in porphyry rocks that are not Porphyry Coppers, paradoxical as it may seem. Desiring to be more accurate and at the same time to use a word that is in some degree descriptive, various engineers have adopted the expression "disseminated copper deposits." This alludes to the characteristic scattering of grains or specks of copper minerals more or less uniformly throughout the mass of the rock. Yet here again the implication is not entirely accurate, for the following reason: in some of the ores, the proportion of copper minerals "peppered" in the rock is small, compared with that which coats the walls of cracks and minute fissures; and that which is found as veinlets along planes of fracture. Many geologists have extended their interpretation of the term disseminated to include both types of mineral occurrence. B.H. Bergstrorn (Research Div., Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee, Wis.) — Fuerstenau and Cohen have concluded from our study of single particle crushing, which had suggested that the size moduli of the crushed specimens were determined by the specific energy expended independent of feed size, that the same independence with respect to feed size exists for the specific energy-product size relationship for rod mills. They present data supporting this conclusion. Our single particle crushing experiments were on single spheres of soda-lime (type of glass was not given in our study) glass for which the feed size can truly be neglected. However, the feed size cannot be neglected in any case where the effective size modulus of the feed is not too much coarser than the size modulus of the product. This can be illustrated in the second experi- ment of Fuerstenau and Cohen where the feed is considered to be the original -6 +%mesh material. However, one can also consider the product from the 7.5-min grind to be the feed for the 10, 15, 20, 25-min grinds, and the 10-min product to be the feed for the 15, 20, 25-min grinds, etc. If the specific energy-product size moduli curves are drawn for these other feeds, as shown on Fig. 3, the new curves (and some curvature is apparent) are much steeper than the -6 +%mesh feed line. The slopes of these new curves are about -1.5, —1.8 and -3.0. This observation is in accord with the observation by Bond, who states that the net specific energy input to a grinding mill is equal to the specific energy represented by the product less the specific energy represented by the feed. PART I.-AREAL GEOLOGY§ PIOCHE lies 240 mi. southwest of Salt Lake City, in southeastern Nevada, 19 in. west of the Nevada-Utah line. It is at the end of a branch line (33 m.), which connects at Caliente with the Los Angeles and Salt Lake division of the Union Pacific System. Its commercial relations are with Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, chiefly with the former. The surrounding area is part of the Great Basin, an arid region of alternating mountain range and intermont plain, the latter floored with outwash from the mountains. About Pioche the plain varies between 4700 and 6000 ft. above sea level. The town lies in a valley at the east base of a low northwest-southeast range (the Pioche Hills) 12 miles in length, which rises about 1000 ft. above the adjacent flat. West of the. Pioche Hills is a higher north-south range consisting of two parts: to the south the Highland Range, between Bennett Pass and Stampede Gap; to the north the Bristol Range, from Stampede Gap to Bristol Pass. This double range reaches altitudes of 8000 to 9000 ft., or more, (the highest point, Highland Peak, is 9395 ft.) and rises some 2500 ft. above the surrounding plain. It is continued in lower hills to north and south. Smaller ranges rise from the flat west of the Highland and Bristol ranges. The area studied and shown on the map (Fig. 1) is covered by 3 one inch to the-mile topographic sheets: the Highland Range, the. Bristol Range, and the Panaca, the latter mapped in part only. The sedimentary rocks of the district include Paleozoic limestones, sandstones and shales, Pliocene tuffs, and modern wash. Igneous rocks are represented by intrusive dikes and stocks and by extensive lava flows of mid-Tertiary time.

It is usual practice in engineering to design a stable structure by ensuring that the stresses in the elements of the structure are always less than their strength, which may be defined as the yield stress, the ultimate stress, or the fatigue stress, according to the type of the load. Such restrictive design is not practical in the design of underground excavations since the rock surrounding such structures is usually failed, but only occasionally does this give rise to instability of the structure. Thus, while the usual criterion for the design of a stable structure is certainly sufficient, it is not necessary for underground excavations. A proper understanding of the conditions necessary for stability is vital to the useful application of rock mechanics knowledge to the design of underground structures. Most tests on the properties and strength of brittle rocks are disrupted at or near maximum load by the rapid release into the specimen of energy stored in the resilience of the testing machine. This is in contrast with a phenomenon, which may be observed frequently, where the rock immediately surrounding an excavation is both failed and subject to stress. By postulating a complete stress-strain curve for rock, it can be shown that failure is unstable or stable, depending upon whether the stress-strain curve of the rock lies inside or outside the stress-strain characteristics of the applied stress. Stability is, therefore, a function of the stiffness of the system applying the stress relative to that of the failing rock. Many workers have established that the strength of rock specimens under a lateral hydrostatic confining stress varies linearly with confining stress, in a way which may be expressed by the equation CT=Co+K[o]3

The extraction of the values from gold bearing clay or clayey ores has always presented difficulties. A description of the successful operation of a mill working on material of this nature is here given in the hope that it will be of interest to mining engineers and metallurgists, particularly as the ore body referred to has been worked out. The methods finally adopted were evolved at the mill after the failure of 3: plant specially designed in England and sent out to New Guinea to cope with the clay by the old principle of calcining to brick followed by crushing and cyanidation. A description is given of the direct cyanidation of run of mine ore in '90 ton vats; which was finally adopted after a great deal of study and experiment. Mention is also made of the method of removing overburden in the open cut and the mining and transport of the ore from the open cut to the mill. The purpose of the paper is to record these matters while the information is still available. . .DESCRIPTION OF THE ORE BODYThe values occurred in a flat-lying lode which had slipped about half a mile down the mountain side and had come to rest in the nearly horizontal position in which it was found and worked. The thickness of the deposit varied from a maximum of about 25 ft. at the northern end to about 10 ft. at the southern end. The ore body was capped with an overburden of decomposed breccia and porphyry of variable thickness the maximum being about 65 ft. The underlying rock, or the footwaIJ of .the flat ore body was breccia locallyknown as blue breccia.

"Most electric furnaces in the nickel and copper smelting industries are still fitted with conventional electrode holders which consist of water-cooled electrical contact clamps and a pressure ring. The water cooling exerts a significant cooling effect on the electrode column. The importance of controlling the temperature of the Soderberg electrode paste at the contact clamp area is examined, using in-plant experience and computer simulation of the paste melting and baking process. In addition to the effect of water-cooling, the effect of other variables, including the mantle air temperature, the electrode current, the furnace freeboard temperature and the electrode slipping rate are discussed. Ways in which the variable heating conditions in the paste melting zone can be controlled are outlined.IntroductionIn most non-ferrous electric smelting operations, the breakage of Soderberg electrodes is an infrequent, isolated occurrence. Occasionally, however, a rash of breakages may be experienced on a particular furnace for what appears to be no obvious reasons. The extent of the breaks may not exhibit a uniform pattern; sometimes the break may be less than half a metre above the electrode tip; at other times it may be at or just below the roof level. The latter type of break is, of course, the most dangerous since it is closest to the non-baked, weak portion of the electrode paste column. No matter where the breaks occur, they result in abnormal furnace power, charging and tapping conditions and loss of production while the new electrode section is slipped and baked. On a six-electrode furnace, breakage on one electrode has the immediate effect of reducing the total furnace power by one-third. On a three-electrode furnace, the effect is more drastic, one half of the power being lost."

PLATING iron with copper has received great attention from practical sand scientific men, but, aside from the deposit secured by immersion of iron in copper salts, by electro-plating, or by welding together thin sheets of iron and copper, these efforts have met with no success. Failure of these efforts, in the production of copper plating, has been due to the fact that the conditions normally and necessarily present in the plating operation are antagonistic to the production of copper-plated iron. In most, if not quite all of them, a bath of molten copper has been used. The-temperature of a molten copper bath is so high that the iron becomes oxidized before it can be immersed in the molten copper, and unless protective flux for the molten copper is used, the surface of the copper will become oxidized, and, in any event, the plated iron will oxidize immediately on its being withdrawn from the molten bath. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the works of The Metals Plating Co. at Elizabeth, N. J., where I witnessed the plating of iron sheets with copper by a new process.1 The plating metal is applied to the sheet in the form of a liquid mixture by means of rolls, such as inking rolls. The sheet, after being coated with the mixture, is automatically carried forward and deposited on a link-belt conveyor, which carries it through a furnace maintained at a. temperature well above that of molten copper. The basic principle involved in this method lies in the application of the plating metal to the sheet while the sheet is cold and then melting the metal in place on the sheet under conditions which are favorable to the formation of the plating.

The amount of vertical subsidence occurring over a longwall operation is a function of the thickness of material removed, the quantity and quality of any fill material, the width of the extraction, and the depth. The relationship between these variables is empirically determined, and subsidence can be predicted using only a few easily established constants which are subject to local conditions, such as the angle of draw. Associated with the vertical subsidence are both tensional and compressional horizontal strains. The component of strain in the direction of face advance is temporary, while the component perpendicular to the direction of working is permanently retained by the ground. It is these horizontal strains and the vertical strain (tilt) which result in damage to surface structures. It is possible to ameliorate the consequences of mining subsidence by utilizing the well-proved techniques described in this paper in the underground operations and on the surface. INTRODUCTION In the past, American mining practice in stratified deposits has been mostly restricted to production by the room-and-pillar system where a sizable percentage of the salable product is left in place as pillars. These pillars are usually regularly spaced and provide a permanent support for the roof of the mine and the surface above. The longwall system employs an advancing face which may be as much as several hundred yards long and some sort of breaking and loading machine which moves back and forth along the length of the face. The roof is supported behind the face only to a distance required to provide working space for the production machine. The supports are then withdrawn and the roof is allowed to cave. The longwall system therefore possesses the various advantages of complete extraction, thus effectively increasing reserves, while at the same time eliminating the necessity and cost of installing artificial supports such as roof bolts and heavy steel girders over large areas. Longwall mining has long been practiced in Europe, where it has undergone an involved development, culminating in the recent perfection of powered-loading machines and automatic self-propelled supports, offering high productivity. Precise knowledge regarding the effect of heat treatment on the properties of steel has made possible the detailed specifications and instructions covering optimum heat-treating temperatures and practices that are in current use. A distinct contrast is presented by the metallurgical treatment of steel adjacent to a fusion weld, as such steel is subjected to each temperature from room temperature to fusion temperature, and cooled at a rate that is not generally controllable but is predetermined by the nature of the assembly to be welded, the kind of welding used, and the surrounding conditions. This is true regardless of the type of fusion welding: oxyacetylene, electric arc, thermit or flash resistance. Therefore it seemed desirable to investigate the effect of this metallurgical treatment on the characteristics of carbon steels commonly used for welding, by a detailed study of metal subjected to each temperature range; i.e., each heat-affected zone. Oxyacetylene welding was chosen for the investigation because of the experimental facility of accurately segregating and studying each temperature zone. The nature of the zones produced by other types of welding is the same. The difference is primarily a matter of dimensions of each of the temperature zones involved. The advantages and disadvantages of the extent of the zone are of prime moment, and are discussed after the presentation of the detailed zone study. No mention is made of the fused metal proper, as this has been the subject of much published research and the nature of the solidified metal is fairly .ell known. Therefore it seemed desirable to investigate the effect of this metallurgical treatment on the characteristics of carbon steels commonly used for welding, by a detailed study of metal subjected to each temperature range; i.e., each heat-affected zone. Oxyacetylene welding was chosen for the investigation because of the experimental facility of accurately segregating and studying each temperature zone. The nature of the zones produced by other types of welding is the same. The difference is primarily a matter of dimensions of each of the temperature zones involved. The advantages and disadvantages of the extent of the zone are of prime moment, and are discussed after the presentation of the detailed zone study. The monitoring of rock slopes is a common procedure in the management of hazards associated with slope instability. Slope stability radar has become widely accepted as the state-of-the-art method for management of hazards associated with unstable slopes in open pit mines. This is confirmed by the rapid adoption of the technology since inception in mid 2003, with over 70 GroundProbe slope stability radars now in use at open pit operations throughout the World. The use of a monitoring system such as slope radar to identify slope hazards is only part of the solution to minimise the consequences associated with slope instability. The presence of the hazard must also be effectively communicated to the mine personnel, so that the correct response to the hazard can be enacted, and the risk mitigated to an acceptable level. In some surface mines, due to the geotechnical characteristics of the rock mass, hazards can develop rapidly; with slopes progressing from stability to ultimate collapse in just hours. In these situations, it is vital that efficient systems are developed to evacuate the area of the pit affected. Such a system has been developed by GroundProbe in South Africa, with the vital driving force for the project being provided by the Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena mine operation based at Mokopane. The mine based development of the system was perceived as an essential aspect in the development of the successful system. From an early stage, the mine provided essential input on both hardware and software developments to allow the system to be rapidly integrated into the mining operation. This paper describes the pit evacuation alarm system that was developed and discussed the benefits obtained from a mine based development program.

Annual Meeting,Wallace, Idaho, Nov. 15-16, 1913. The third annual meeting, which was also the eighth consecutive meeting and the second to be held in the Coeur d'Alène district, was held in Wallace, Idaho, Nov. 15-16, 1913, with side trips to Kellogg-Wardner, Larson, and Mullan, where several mills were visited. The meeting was held jointly with the Montana Section, about 50 members and guests being present. Headquarters were in the Samuels Hotel, sessions being held in the public library. The arrangements and program were in the hands of the following local committee: George W. Roddewig, W. Earl Greenough, H. M. Childs. At 2.30 p.m., Nov. 15, the first session was called to order by Prof. F. A. Thomson, member of the Executive Committee, adjournment being taken to the Mine Rescue car, where Mr. Anderson and his assistant entertained the visitors for nearly two hours by demonstrations of mine-rescue and, first-aid practice, after which the party visited the Hercules mill, mention of which was made in the report of last year when the Section visited the plant. There are, however, several important alterations and additions to the flow-sheet to be noted, such as substitution of Chilean and Hardinge mills for the Huntington mills in the regrinding department; rearrangement of the tables and slimers, with a noticeable addition of the later models of the Franz machines, and the installation of the Wyman flotation process, which has been tried out, or is being tested, with more than ordinary success, on the middlings in several of the mills of the district, the Green Hill Cleveland mill being provided with a 100-ton unit, partly described below
