"AngloAmerican used the extractant M5640 at Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde and uses PT5050MD at Los Bronces Division, which are aldoxime and modifier blends. In the first case, the modifier is the esther TXIB, while in the second case is the tridecanol TDA. It is a well-known fact that the extractant degrades while the modifier does not and with time the oxime/modifier ratio can change significantly, depending on the operating conditions of each plant.In order to evaluate the effect of this varying modifier content in the plant organic, especially in the organic losses, a complete metallurgical test work program was conducted at laboratory and pilot plant scale by Flomin SNF, a new extractant supplier. Results showed that the addition of an aldoxime without the modifier did not affect the chemical performance of the extractant, but there was a significant decrease in the viscosity and density of the organic.Based on the results obtained in the metallurgical program, it was decided to run plant scale tests at the SX plants of Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. In these tests, instead of adding extractant to maintain the organic inventory, CuPROMEX 3406 which is an unmodified aldoxime was added until the original oxime/modifier ratio was reached. This was obtained after 6 months of operation and since then both plants are running with the extractant CuPROMEX 3302 both supplied by Flomin SNF.In the case of Los Bronces, the pilot plant work was completed and it is programmed to run similar plant scale tests. In this case, the oxime/modifier ratio increased and TDA will be added until reaching the original ratio.The plant results obtained at Mantoverde and Mantos Blancos, together with the pilot plant test results obtained at Los Bronces, are discussed in this paper."

Annually at least 5% percent of world power consumption is involved in the process of ore dressing while ore processing technology. Such rate of energy consumption demonstrates the importance of a given process study in the human life-sustaining activity. Examining of interparticle destruction being under external stress pressure in ore responses this problem solution at the greatest degree. The technology of destruction in the roll press is of great interest. The use of the given equipment allows to save a significant amount of energy by means of the built-in ore destruction mechanism. Examination of stress-strain fields which determine the level of interparticle destruction between the rolls in the ore layer enables to specify both level of ore destruction and power consumption. The mathematical computer modeling for the deformable environment use based on the finite-element method (FEM) allows to carry out the given research. We use FEM solution for elastic contact problem for the most complete study of power consumption employed in ore and interparticle destruction. This problem solution allows also to examine energy consumption expenses spent for ore crushing in the roll press. Also we have identified the mechanism of ore in a layer of the particles under pressure roller press. It is established that high level of performance and reduction of energy consumption in interparticle destruction of ore in the layer due to the appearance of the gradient of normal stresses in contact of particles of mineral raw materials. The algorithm has been developed determining crushing product particle size distribution of fractured particles in the layer, using the Bond’s theory of crushing. The use of our FEM model reduces the time of equipment selection for new plant and at the design stage to reduce the risks of errors in the choice of roller presses.

"Model tests have been performed to investigate the vertical, horizontal and cone tip resistances of bucket pile embedded in sand by different installation methods; suction force by pump and jacking force by actuator. Micro-cone penetrometer is used to evaluate the variation of the effective stress inside and outside of the pile after installation. As a result of vertical pull-out test, the jacked pile shows 3 times larger resistance than the suction-installed pile. For horizontal pull-out test, the ultimate horizontal capacity and the slope of load-displacement curve on the suction-installed pile decreases by 22% and 40%, respectively, compared to the jacked pile. In cone penetration test, inside cone tip resistance of the suction-installed pile is about 40% smaller than the jacked pile, which indicates that the effective stress is reduced due to upward seepage of bucket pile in sand by suction force. Therefore, installation methods can affect the behavior of the bucket pile significantly.INTRODUCTIONA suction force occurred when bucket pile penetrates into sandy soils induces seepage flow into the bucket pile so downward seepage near the outside of bucket pile causes to increases the effective stress, while upward seepage inside the bucket pile decreases the effective stress (Mahn, 2005; Fig. 1). The effect of induced seepage causes to reduce the penetration resistance during installation. On the other hand, reduced effective stress can decrease the horizontal and vertical capacities of bucket pile by significant disturbance at the tip of the bucket pile due to the flow net. Due to the complexity and difficulty considering the effects of suction installation, many previous researchers generally have neglected the effect of suction installation in their experiments. Rock-dusting is an. effective means of preventing coal-dust from propagating an explosion in a coal mine, but it will not prevent gas from igniting-explosively and with much attendant damage locally. Ventilation must therefore be effective at all times, regardless of the employment of other explosion-prevention methods, if gas explosions are to be avoided. This paper describes a gas explosion which occurred in as bituminous mine that was well rock-dusted at the point of ignition and which exemplifies the value of rock-dusting, the necessity of maintaining effective ventilation, and the need of permissible rock-dusting machines receiving power from a permissible locomotive. Description of Explosion The mine in which this explosion occurred is developed on a panel system in a practically level seam; the panel entries are driven in pairs, and the air current intakes on the right entry and returns on the left entry. Near the mouth of the intake a door is placed to control the ventilation; board stoppings are placed in crosscuts, except the second from the face, in which a brattice cloth curtain is hung, the last crosscut is left open and line brattices conduct the air current from the last crosscut to the faces. In No. 7 entry the last cross-cut was 152 feet from the face, the line brattice being within 38 feet of this face, and the second crosscut was 250 feet outby the face of the back entry or return. Seven days prior to the explosion the intake and return entries were rock-dusted to within 38 feet of the face, and as the entry had advanced during the week, the rock-dusting was to be extended.

INTRODUCTION. THE Park City mining-district is distinctively a camp of few properties, 5,000 acres, or one-third of the entire district, being under the management of but three companies. As a rule, the ore-bodies lie deep, with no outcrop, except where erosion has formed the deeper canyons and gulches. Ontario canyon exposed the famous Ontario ledge, and Woodside gulch showed the first ore of the Silver King Coalition mine. The Quincy ore-bodies were first brought to light in upper Empire canyon, and Thaynes canyon was instrumental in aiding the prospector during the early days of the camp. There are 22 shafts which have reached a depth of at least 500 ft., ten a depth of 1,000 ft., five a depth of 1,300 ft., and two a depth of 2,000 ft. The amount of lateral development has been proportionally extensive, including six long tunnels, four of which are in 3 miles, with a fifth now being driven. The Ontario lower drain-tunnel is now more than 4 miles long. The formations are sedimentary, dipping about 30° NW. and N., and traversed by many fissures, dikes, and faults. The principal ore-bodies are found associated either with the contact of the basal Ontario quartzite and the overlying limes, or on a quartzite stratum within the limes, or in the fissures, or along some of the porphyry dikes. The district covers the intersection of the Uintah and Wasatch ranges, which explains the existence of large folds and faults, and fissures of great length, width, and depth. In a general way, the geology of the district consists of a basal quartzite dome, which has been exposed by erosion at the Ontario property. The Ontario fissure lies entirely within this formation. Over 10 percent of the United States of America or 41 percent of the Federal lands is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as Public Lands. The mission is to manage the use of these lands and their resources. The way in which BLM carries out its mission is being refocused under the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management for the benefit of various human needs including environmental, social and economic values. The Bureau is developing methods to integrate the renewable and non-renewable resources programs into the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management. Exploration, development and extraction of energy or mineral resources on Public Lands are affected. The statements that following the next few pages are my personal views as a scientist (economic geologist -mining technologist) who is and has been involved for the last twenty years in the multiple-use management of Public Lands. They are not necessarily the position of the Bureau of Land Management, although much of the information on which I base my views comes from my experience with the BLM. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages over 10 percent of the United States (270 million acres or 108 million hectares) which is 41 percent of the Federal Lands. Lands managed by BLM are known as Public Lands as opposed to the National Forest Lands which are Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 which in Sec. 102 states ??that it is the policy of the United States (7) ?that management be on the basis of multiple use and sustained yield??, the mission of the BLM is rapidly refocused under the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystems-based management for the benefit of the environment, human needs and socio-economic values.

"In this paper, experiences from Polish non-ferrous metals ores enrichment plants in the copper and blende concentrates quality improvement are discussed. The blende concentrate being produced in ZGH Boleslaw S.A., with Zn content of about 54,5% is characterized by the relatively high magnesium content reaching a level of 1% resulting from the dolomite presence, while for the zinc production by electrowinning a concentrate in which magnesium content should not exceed 0,3% is required. The implemented new technology for the quality improvement of blende concentrate is based on the leaching of zinc concentrate with sulfuric acid aimed at dissolving of the contained dolomite, and then flotation of the leached concentrate. It allows to obtain a concentrate with magnesium content below 0,1% at the simultaneously increased zinc content to about 57,5%. In the paper, laboratory tests results on the development of optimal flotation flowsheet for the gypsum removal and the industrial tests results concerning the process optimization of this flotation are discussed. In turn, the copper concentrate being produced in Polish copper ore enrichment plants KGHM PM S.A., is characterized by the increased organic carbon content - above 8%. It creates problems with the smelting of this concentrate because of difficulties with the heat removal derived from the combustion of organic carbon in the flash smelting process. The implementation of segregating flotation to the industrial practice allows the effective production of two concentrates with the differentiated chemical compositions - a concentrate with increased copper content and reduced organic carbon content for the flash smelting process, and a concentrate with lower copper content and increased organic carbon content for the shaft smelting process. In the paper, conditions of the segregating flotation and the achieved results are described."

The target to double the coal production by 1995 presents a formidable challenge to the coal mining industry. The mines of future, probably will be located in relatively difficult geological environment because of the exhaustion of the well defined bedded and easily minable deposits. To compound the problems of mining industry will be the reliance of power plants need for coal. The coal must reach the power plants on schedule to avoid expensive blackouts and brown¬outs. It will be imperative that the mines operate without interruptions and at designed capacities. The parameters which have been traditionally responsible for the interrup¬tions of production are: breakdown of production machinery, labor management relations and geological anomalies. Of these three problems, solutions for the first two can be arrived at by developing procedures to correct the situation. A planned maintenance and preventive maintenance program will go a long way in minimizing the equipment breakdowns. Labor relations will eventually improve as the miners begin to enjoy long-term employment. However, with the geological problems, the situation will probably continue to deteriorate and would require careful planning to minimize the impact of geological problems on production and safety. Some of the geological aspects which interfere with production are: faults, washouts, slips and slickensides, water bearing overlying strata, impuri¬ties in the coal seam, and presence of expansive clays in the coal floor. The design of large capacity mines will have to incorporate the geological distur¬bances and mine through them it may become very uneconomical to abandon producing sections because of the presence of the geological anomalies. This paper discus¬ses the geological aspects of coal mining which should receive consideration from the inception of the mining ventures. Pertinent geological aspects are discussed to develop the data base which will aid in evolving safe and efficient mine layouts.

"INTRODUCTION The South Hecla mine, one of the principal mines of the Alta United Mines Co., is situated at Alta in thee Little Cottonwood mining district, about 30 miles southeasterly from Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine has produced copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, and is reported to have been one 'of the principal sources of this country's bismuth from 1912 to 1925. The tungsten mineral, scheelite, has been found but has not been recovered. The extreme need for these minerals during World War II prompted an examination of the property by the Bureau of Mines and resulted in an unpublished report entitled ""The South Hecla Mine, Salt Lake County, Utah"" (fig. 1).A Bureau of Mines project 3301 was initiated, and operations were started early in 1943. The primary purpose of the project was to increase substantially the reserves of bismuth and tungsten ores. The critical situation in regard to lead, copper, and zinc developed during the early stages of the operation, and the work was expanded to include the development of ores 'of these metals.An investigation of 'the Albion, Rustler, and Greeley workings adjoining the South Hecla mine was made, and this work is also described (fig. 2); ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn Its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each investigative project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. MEMBERS of the Engineering Education Committee held two meetings at Joplin preliminary to the opening of the main meeting there. The first was held on Sunday afternoon. It was attended by all who had arrived early enough and as among the dozen or' fifteen who were present the heads of a half dozen schools of mines were included it was a representative gathering. C: H. Fulton, chairman of the Committee presided and T. T. Read acted as secretary of the meeting. The chair., man reminded those present that last year there had been some discussion as to the advisability of the proposal, made by Edward Steidle, that a, separate society, devoted to education in the mineral industry, he organized. Many .people had felt that there are already so many societies in existence to demand one's time and attention, that it would be a mistake to add to their number and the counter suggestion had been made that the work of this committee could be so reorganized as to meet all the needs that a separate society could fill. He therefore presented for discussion these four' questions: (1) Shall a subcommittee .be appointed to study, and report in February, 1932, the possibility of the reorganization of the work of the Engineering Education Committee into the equivalent of an' Institute division; (2) if the work is so reorganized what shall be the relation of the work of the Committee (division) to the work of the-Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education; (3.): what are the, cardinal objectives of education for the mineral industry; and (4) what should be done as regards the movement in some institutions to plan their work-in the light of that being done in other institutions, for example, in geophysics?

THE maps of our large mines are usually prepared with the greatest care; and it is somewhat singular that, in comparison with the great amount of time and money spent in surveying and platting, so little actual use is made of them. Almost the only purpose for which a completed survey-map is afterwards consulted, is the determination of the relative position of the different workings to each other, and to the boundary-lines of the property. After the completion of such a map, it should be made the beginning of another, and in most cases a far more important, undertaking, namely, its utilization as -a starting-point for a complete inventory of the company's underground possessions. The ordinary mine-survey map, being nothing but a record of what has been done, is, in one sense, only ancient history. To increase its value, such additions should be made as will render it a complete statement of the amount and value of ore in sight at any particular time, and a guide for future develop¬ments. Comparatively little extra labor is involved in this undertaking, since the larger and most expensive part of the work has already been completed when the mine has been surveyed and mapped. The necessary additions consist in working out, and platting on the maps, the geology of the mine as exposed in the workings, in such a manner that the geological survey may be of daily use in the development and operation of the mine. The first step towards the production of a geological map consists in tracing individual level-sheets from the general or composite map. The area to be included, outside of the property in question, will depend very much on local conditions; but, for geological, legal and commercial reasons, it should be extended as far as reasonably practicable. Raise boring of mine ventilation shafts in many cases offers a lower cost and higher speed method of construction in comparison to conventional shaft sinking. Where underground access is available for raise boring the potential savings indicate that raise boring should be considered as an alternative to other methods. Raise boring machines are currently in use which have the capability for reaming shafts up to twenty feet in diameter, depending on the strata and depth. These large capacity machines make it possible to consider raise bored shafts for moving large volumes of air. Although we will consider here only ventilation shafts, raise boring should also be considered for men and material shafts. When the mine planner has determined the volume of air required through a shaft at a particular location he is faced with the problem of selecting the shaft size. The principal factors in optimizing the shaft size are the construction costs for the shaft 'and the power cost to move the air through the shaft. The larger diameter the' shaft is the more it costs to construct, but for a given volume of air the power required (cost) becomes lower as the diameter increases. The construction cost is paid only once, when the shaft is constructed. The power costs, however, are paid throughout the life of the shaft. Methods of optimizing air shaft size found in the literature (References 1 and 2) amortize the construction cost and include it in the average annual cost of operating the airshaft. These methods derive a formula for the average annual cost vs. shaft size and de-rive the formula to compute the optimum size for a given air flow rate. "The pumping of the underground water of the Butte mines is largely done from two central plants of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The mines of one part of the mining district are served by a modern and mechanically efficient underground plant at the High Ore mine, and the remaining part by a similar one at the Leonard mine. Properties not affiliated with the A. C. M. Co. have separate pumping plants, although in several instances that company handles the water of outside companies, under which arrangement costly single plants are dispensed with. An extensive system of underground crosscuts and drifts connects these mines to both the main pumping plants, so that either may receive the water from all the mines in case there should be a failure in the other to perform its designed service.Quintuple) vertical electric pumps, 7 inches by 12 inches each, of a capacity of 600 gals. per minute under a head of 1,203 feet, are installed at both the plants. Each pump is direct connected to two 150 h-p. motors using 2,300 volts, the motors being on top of the pumps.At the High Ore plant the power cable of 400,000 c. m. is placed in a nearby shaft, the cable at present being hung from the surface to the 2,200 level. From this cable feeders of 300,000 c. m. are laid in connecting crosscuts to the pumping station at the High Ore shaft.The Leonard motors use 440 volts. The practice of building the pumps with the motors on top requires stations with high roofs, but permits the operation of the pumps if they should be submerged by an unusual flow of water."

Since the advent of coal mining, the minimal lighting in the under¬ground working place has been an obstacle to the safe and efficient performance of the miner's many tasks. Compounding this problem is the fact that the machines being operated in the working place are so large that the vertical and horizontal clearances around the machinery are severely limited. Consequently, in these poorly lighted and congested working places, the machine operator is unable to utilize his peripheral vision. He cannot see hazards as they develop and, too often, cannot react in time to avoid serious injury or death to himself or his fellow miners. The greatest hazard to miners inby the last open crosscut is from falls of roof which are often preceded by warning signs such as falling rock fragments, roof supports taking weight, or a sudden reduction in the height of the working place. These warning signs often go undectected because the machine operator's attention is focused on the small circle of light emitted from his cap lamp. Congress recognized the illumination deficiencies, and, in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, charged the Secretary of the Interior with the authority and responsibility for development and promulgation of minimum standards for illuminating working places in coal mines. These standards have been developed and, as stated in the April 1, 1976 Notice, Federal Register, Volume 41, No. 64, will be promulgated on October 1, 1976, as mandatory regulations under Section 75.1719, Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations. The regulations require that the designated surfaces within the miner's normal field of vision be illuminated to 0.06 foot-lamberts while self¬propelled mining equipment is being operated in the working places. The term "working place" is defined in the Act as "the area of a coal mine inby the last open crosscut".

It is said that Thales of Miletus, 600 B.C.,1 was aware of the attraction of lodestone toward iron and highly magnetic minerals. However, the birth of magnetic concentration followed shortly after the invention of the first electromagnet by Sturgeon in 1825. Sturgeon's magnet was described in the annals of electricity.2 The first attempts to concentrate minerals by the use of magnets date back to about 18473 but the first commercial drum-concentrator was apparently invented by R. Cook in 1849. Credit must also be given to the invention of P. Righter's machine in 1867,5 and to the highly successful Wenström separator devised in Sweden in 1883.8 Since the advent of these early separators there have been virtually hundreds of patents granted covering minor modifications of drum-type magnetic separators. The more important advances from a technological viewpoint have been the design of stable power supplies for d.c. magnets, the advent of ceramic permanent magnets which are now replacing electromagnets for the concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, and advances in general magnet and machine configurations.7 One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.8 Brown measures the radial component of the field intensity one-half inch from the drum surface and fits a Fourier series in the angle about the drum axis (Figure 1). Montana Tech is located in the historic mining town of Butte, MT and is adjacent to the Orphan Boy mine. This abandoned underground mine will be the heat source for a down-hole heat exchanger (DHE)/heat pump system. The mine was abandoned in the 1950?s and has since filled with water to within approximately 30 m of the surface. The shaft is composed of a 245 m vertical shaft connected with horizontal crosscut drifts at 60 m and 150 m below the water level that connect to a large stope with approximately 1250 million liters of water at a consistent 75-78°F temperature. The intent is to build this heating system to augment or fully heat a newly built 2,000 m2 building on the Montana Tech campus. As designed the system uses ?off-the-shelf? parts making the basic configuration straightforward with the exception of the DHE?s which need to be placed into the vertical shaft. Because there is little or no examples of placing the heat exchangers in a vertical shaft, the primary focus of this work was to model the heat exchanger placement and configuration in the vertical shaft such that thermal currents develop between the stope and vertical shaft in, via the horizontal crosscut drifts, in order to move the water and thereby provide the required energy. This study includes the modeling of water flow, temperature profiles, and the heat contribution from the surrounding rock walls.

For practical purposes, the terms "natural frequency," "resonance" and "critical speed" are synonymous. A part passing though its "critical" or "critical speed" may also be said to be "resonant" or "resonating." The vibrations of a precisely balanced part can be magnified by the structure in which it is assembled. Anyone who has driven an automobile knows that it will vibrate more at a certain speed than at others. According to the formula for centrifugal force, vibration should increase steadily with a rise in rpm. What happens instead is that the vibration not only in- creases with r m. but suddenly rises at a much higher rate through the critical speed, and then apparently smooths out as the rpm passes beyond it. To visualize what happens, consider a simple flat spring with a weight mounted at one end. When the spring is deflected by pulling down on the weight and then letting it go, the spring will oscillate, and the spring-and-weight system will vibrate at its natural frequency. If the timing or direction bf the impulses imparted to the spring did not coincide with its natural frequency, the result would be an irregular vibration that would not build up. If, on the other hand, the timing and direction of the impulses did coincide with the spring's natural frequency, the result would be a larger and larger amplitude. If the impulses were continued indefinitely, the amplitude of the spring's vibrations would go on rising [while its frequency stayed the same] until the spring broke or the amplitude of the vibrations reached an equilibrium [because frictional or other forces would tend to damp it]. Resonance magnifies the amplitude of vibrations in a relatively undamped system between 100 to 200 times over that of nonresonant vibrations. Frictional or viscous damping often reduces the magnification [from 10 to 20 times], but even with this reduction the amplitude would still be large enough to cause excessive wear, and sometimes even fractures. For example, a blower might show only 0.001 in. of vibration on the manufacturer's test stand. Installed, the blower could pass into its critical speed [the speed at which the frequency of the vibrations caused by the rotor coincides with the supporting structure's natural frequency], and the 0.001 in. of vibration could be resonated to 0.010 in., or as much as 0.020 in. The cure for such a condition would not be to lower the vibration of the blower by further balancing or better alignment but to separate the two frequencies by at least 20 to 30%.

DURING the summer of 1942 several chromite deposits were discovered in the Lac du Bonnet district about eighty miles northeast of Winnipeg. The deposits are confined to the Bird River complex, a folded composite sill of basic and ultrabasic igneous rocks of early Precambrian age that lies to the north of Bird river (1). The outcrop of the sill represents the trace of an easterly plunging anticline, the south limb extending from the northeast bay of Lac du Bonnet eastward to Bird lake, and the other limb, 6 to 12 miles north, lying between Maskwa river and Euclid lake. The south limb of the sill is 20 miles long, and the northern counterpart 15 miles; but its continuity is interrupted by faulting and by the intrusion of younger granite, so that the total length of outcrop of both limbs does not likely exceed 25 miles. The sill is intrusive into early Precambrian greenstones and associated sedimentary rocks. The chromite discoveries have been made at several localities on both limbs of the sill, and in each case at the same geological horizon. The sill comprises an upper layer of hornblende gabbro and a lower layer of serpentinized peridotite, and altogether is from 500 to 3,500 feet thick. The chromite zone is within and near the top of the peridotite layer, and thus about midway of the sill, both of the limbs of which stand nearly vertical. This geological relationship was established early in the exploration of the initial discoveries and served as the basis for successful predictions of later discoveries. The chromite zone probably persists throughout the length of the sill, but its width and chromite content are not everywhere the same. The initial exploration along both limbs of the sill has shown a combined total length of about 12,000 feet of chromite ore varying in width from 6 to 12 feet. In many places the overburden is thick and obscures the continuity of the chromite zone; but as investigation proceeds the known deposits will be extended and new ones will be found. Thus, although a total length of 12,000 feet of ore has been investigated up to the present time, there is an indicated length of approximately 31,000 feet along which the ore is more than 4 to 5 feet wide. This estimate is based on geological considerations and represents a total tonnage in the order of 15,000 tons per vertical foot of depth.

"To control the large deformation of soft rock around the roadway subjected to high stress, it is important to improve the stability of support structure, in addition to increasing support strength. In this study, the causes for the destabilization of U-steel frame and its loading characteristics were analyzed by theoretical analysis, laboratory experiments and field tests. The technology of constant support resistance, the principle of support structure compensation and the compensation technique are proposed. The results indicated that the main reasons for frame structure destabilization are caused by low strength of connector, irrational structure of connector, poor interaction between the surrounding rocks and support frame and structure, and unstable support structure. Thus, the corresponding technological measures, such as connector with high strength and rational structure are adopted. The bearing capacity of frame is unstable after slipping. In order to maintain the high support resistance when the frame is performing the support function, the frame connector should be retightened after slipping. Though the working resistance may be improved greatly by using the backfilling or back grouting of U-steel, the frame remains unstable because of the unstable frame structure. Therefore, according to the deformation characteristics of rocks surrounding the roadway and the structure instability of U- steel frame, the stable structure device is used to carry out the structural compensation of U-steel frame, and the whole bearing capacity of the frame and its structural stability are improved greatly.INTRODUCTIONThroughout the development of the roadway supports for coal mines in China, it can be seen that the supporting strength and supporting resistance increase continuously with increase in mining depth and supporting difficulties [1]. With respect to the ground control mechanism and supporting technology of rocks surrounding the soft rock roadways subjected to high stress, considerable research has been done both at home and abroad. The backfilling technology behind the high-resistance and yieldable U-steel wall, the new type of grout/bolt support technology and the bolting with high-strength mesh support technology were developed, and have been used widely in coal mines with notable economic benefits [2-7]. However, a large number of engineering practices show that in many cases the existing rock control technology of roadway may not control the large deformation of the soft rock roadways subjected to high stress. The reason that the large deformation of soft rock roadway occurs is mainly due to poor structure stability of existing frame bearing structure, not insufficient support strength."

"The effect of operating variables on the flotation performance at steady-state has been extensively used for modelling and simulation of separation processes. However, the dynamic characterization of key variables such as gas dispersion (Sauter mean diameter of bubbles, D32, and bubble surface area flux, SB) and froth discharge rate is rather scarce. In this paper, an experimental design allowed identifying the dynamic response of the flotation process in a laboratory scale flotation cell, using a two-phase system, airwater. The installation included automatic control for the superficial gas rate, JG, and the pulp level. Gas dispersion was evaluated in terms of the Sauter mean diameter of a bubble population and the bubble surface area flux, SB = 6·JG/D32. The D32 was measured using the McGill Bubble Size Analyzer (MBSA) along with a semiautomated algorithm. In addition, the froth discharge velocity was measured in real-time using a Visiofroth system. The control variables were the superficial gas rate and the frother concentration (Teefroth). The dynamic characterization of the flotation process is useful to design algorithms that allow the direct or indirect control of metallurgical variables such as flotation rate, concentrate grade and mineral recovery.INTRODUCTIONGas dispersion indicates the way the gas entering a flotation machine is dispersed throughout the volume of the equipment (Schwarz & Alexander, 2006). The gas dispersion is typically characterized in terms of the bubble size (dB), gas holdup (eG), superficial gas rate (JG), and bubble surface area flux (SB =6·JG/dB) (Finch et al., 2000). All these variables have significant impact on the metallurgical performance of flotation machines. For example, Perez-Garibay et al. (2014) investigated the effect of the particle size, bubble size distribution, superficial gas rate and collector dosage on the flotation performance, for the separation of a sphalerite mineral. The authors observed that recovery increased with the superficial gas rate ranging from JG = 0.04 to JG = 0.08 cm/s and also a maximum recovery was obtained for bubble size close to 300 µm. Gorain et al. (1998) reported a strong correlation between the flotation rate constant and the bubble surface area flux in a zinc cleaner circuit. Both variables were directly proportional at three froth depths in the range of hF =7 - 45 cm. Dobby & Finch (1986) incorporated the effect of the superficial gas rate and the bubble size on the flotation efficiency by means of a kinetic model for the rate constants. Yianatos & Contreras (2010) developed a model to estimate the carrying capacity in large flotation cells by including the bubble surface area flux."
