This paper aims to show alternatives to the estimation methods used for finding the parameters in GyÆs well known model for sampling variance in the case of particulate materials. Many experiments designed for gathering data on the sampling variance for specific mineral deposits allow the experimenter to use approximations in the calculation of the parameters of the mathematical model involved, which sometimes can be very useful. However, there are some instances where approximations lead to biased estimates of the parameters, and consequently, lead to errors in the establishment of the sampling protocol and treatment of quality control data. In the present work, an alternative is presented for computing the parameter values based in any experimental set up, without the need for any simplification. The method was derived using the method of least squares and evaluations are made using the usual tools in this kind of methodology: residual analysis and evaluation of the fit by means of a plot of calculated versus experimental variances. With the aid of these tools, one can better evaluate the structure of the experimental errors in such applications, and the adherence to the proposed model. In addition, it is possible to perform hypothesis testing for the equality of different sampling procedures in terms of sampling variance. The full mathematical details are given, together with an algorithm for applying the method, which can be implemented easily using any computer language. An illustration of the method is shown, considering the international work done in ISO/TC 102. This example is a determination of the minimum sample mass to be collected in iron ore shipments, in order to achieve a specified sampling precision.

Dr. F. Well, the first thing that you have to realize is what is the Bureau of Mines? The Bureau of Mines basically has two functions. First it does the research and development relating to mining, processing, conversion, refining, recycling and substitution for minerals and materials. We work hand in hand with the U. S. Geological Survey on the geological end, although the exploration part of the game is theirs, and there is a very good relationship between the Survey and the Bureau of Mines. There are some overlaps with the Office of Coal Research, and we expect to be able to straighten out the areas of overlap, because it's important than OCR and the Bureau work together. Both the Office of Coal Research and the Bureau of Mines will have increased budgets next year, assuming that they are appropriated by the Congress. The other general area is in the whole area of mineral policy. The Bureau of Mines again is the key agency for developing data and analyses and making recommendations on all types of mineral policy in the Federal Government. It's a focal point for all types of minerals activities. It's the only real centralized focal point, along with the USGS, in the whole Federal Government. The problem areas, to answer your question specifically, are first of all the Bureau of Mines budget this year is $105 million and the budget for next year is $215 million, so it's more than double. Now, assuming that this budget is appropriated by the Congress, most of that money will be used for research and development in the energy area.

I have repeatedly said that the mechanical treatment of the metal forming a steel rail, during its manufacture, was comparatively of much greater importance than its chemical composition; and years of observation have confirmed and emphasized this fact. ' The comparison of the wear of the earlier steel rails with that of later ones, and to the great disadvantage of the latter, ia still being constantly made by railway oficials. And while some of us, with experience covering the whole history of the manufacture of steel rails, are aware of the great differences in the conditions governing their production at various periods, I do not think the engineering world generally appreciates the direct and imperative influence which these variations have had, and are having, upon the wearing-quality of the rails. In the earlier days, the steel was poured into ingots which would make but two 30-ft. rails not exceeding a weight of 60 lb. per yard—giving a mass weighing, say about 1,400 lb., and of a section of about 12 in. square. To-day the ingots are about 22 in. square, and weigh more than 4,000 lb. Of course, the interior of the larger ingots must remain hot and liquid longer than that of the smaller ones, and from this condition arises the steel-rail makers béte noire—segregation of the metalloids and piping of the steel. Ingots of the smallest section will pipe, but with the increase of the size, so will follow that of the interior cavity. This well-known tendency demands that special care should be exercised to avoid the evils arising from it.

Subject paper unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that sulfur is the major source of production problems in cement kilns. This is not the case. Sulfur is not a problem as long as the mole ratio of sulfur to alkali oxides is less than, or equal to, 1. This is attributed to the sulfur preferentially combining with the alkali oxides and not acting as a clogging agent due to the nature of the pre-heater vessels. Where the mole ratio exceeds 1, many methods are avail- able to eliminate or reduce the clogging problems such as using the preheater bypass or a precalciner with up to 100% kiln gas bypass. In non-preheater kilns, the presence of sulfates is hardly ever a problem anyhow. Thus, the level of sulfur in the fuel and raw material that might cause problems is not a fixed amount, but is predictable. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the economics of conversion of kilns in the Indonesian and Phillippine cement industries from oil firing to coal firing. This economic analysis has very little to do with the sulfur levels. Thus, the section of the paper on sulfates is actually rather meaningless. The economic analysis is also rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow accepted economic analysis procedures by including interest charges. They have fallen into the trap of confusing financing with economic evaluation. When the accepted methods of economic evaluation are used, the return on investment increases to about 35%. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous.

In tunneling or mining where hydraulic shields, moles, or rock boring equipment is used lasers such as those shown guide the production machine by providing a continuous and visible line and grade reference. In this application the laser may be mounted in the heading, preferably somewhere above spring line. If we view the circular heading as a compass in the vertical plane with 0º referencing at the crown of the heading and 180º on the invert, then it might be said that the laser may be mounted anywhere from 270º through 0º to 90º. The laser is generally mounted 2 to 3 ft off the wall or the crown of the heading by means of a bracket that may be attached directly to the liner plate. In cases where no liner plate is used, then brackets may be bolted directly into the ribs, or grouted directly into the rock. Once the laser is in position the beam is projected to the face. Two points must be surveyed upstream between the laser and the face which define line and grade. Targets may be suspended beneath each of these points approximately 2 to 3 ft. These targets may be circular or rectangular with a surface area which approximates 16 sq in. Each of these two targets should have a ½ to ¾ in. hole drilled directly in their center. When the laser is adjusted so that the beam passes through the holes in each of the two targets, the laser beam itself will parallel the center line of the tunnel and become a visible line and grade reference over the total beam projection.

R. C. Shnay (Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa, Ont., Canada)-—The authors are to be congratulated on an interesting and informative paper. However, several questions arise when the isothermal formation of martensite .is considered in relation to the formation of bainite at temperatures near the M, point. The reactions in an alloy and in a plain carbon steel would appear to be comparable; and in the course of a recent investigation of the austenite-bainite transformation in a plain carbon steel,Ia the writer has obtained data at temperatures above and below the M, point. These data are in some respects similar to those of the authors and a comparison would seem justified. The steel used in this investigation had the nominal composition: C, 0.80 pct; Mn, 0.20; and Si, 0.20. The course of the transformation was followed by the use of a magnetic balance. The magnetic moment of the specimen as determined by this instrument is directly proportional to the percentage of the total volume of the specimen which has transformed to bainite. ~lf specimens were austenitized at 1850°F for 4 hr, quenched to the transformation temperature, and quickly transferred to the magnetic balance. Readings were taken at regular intervals until the transformation had stopped. A typical transformation curve is shown in Fig. 9. The preliminary curve preceding the S-shaped curve was found at all temperatures above the M, to around 600°F. Both the extent of this preliminary curve and the time interval between it and the S-shaped curve were found to decrease with increasing temperature as was suggested by Davenport and Bain.14 Therefore,

The thought of constructing an intake shaft five miles from the shore and 142 feet below the surface of Lake Huron from the bottom up sounds like a questionable venture. Why would one want to raise a shaft from the bottom at the end of a 16 foot diameter, six mile long tunnel to within six feet of the bottom of Lake Huron? The answer lies in the fact that Lake Huron is seldom a tranquil lake. The construction period and workable days from the surface are limited. Two previous attempts to construct this intake shaft by conventional means had been thwarted by lake storms. These approaches were circular sheet-piling cofferdams with the intention of sinking a 30 foot OD, five foot wall thickness concrete casing in the center. However lake storms, particularly in the months of November and December, proved disasterous. The last attempt was halted in December 1970 when three of the seven circular cofferdams on the north side were destroyed by pounding waves. Then, due to the nature of the technical difficulties and limited construction schedule time, it seemed desirable to devise a way in which construction could proceed without being too lake-sensitive. Obviously, if men could work from the tunnel and proceed upward toward the bottom of the lake, not having to worry about the soil collapsing and bringing the lake in on their heads, the construction would be unimpeded by adverse weather. The answer to this, however, required techniques beyond the ordinary. Approximately two years previous to the start of this shaft, nine shafts had been efficiently constructed on the same project site

An autobiography, the story of a Hoosier boy who fought his way to manhood and power through early misfortune and poverty, from street urchin and newsboy, to editor and author; from lumberjack and dock walloper to statesman and Governor of Michigan. The reader has the measure of the man in the first chapter, a dramatic recital of how the fighting boy editor cleaned up a lawless mining camp of 40 years ago. The thread of the narrative is the author's life-long devotion to outdoor living, ex-ploration and travel. Residing in Sault de Sainte Marie, Mich., in the heart of the Lake Superior country, he took his delight and, incidentally, found his fortune in prospecting the north woods for iron ore; eventually, extending his travels to the continents and many of the islands of the world, he discovered what, he believes-to be a great iron range in Madagascar. In this book there is plenty of anecdote, a great deal of wholesome social and po¬litical philosophy and some interesting sidelights on the characters of some of the author's prominent contemporaries in the political life of Michigan. The style is direct and animated, flavored and illuminated with the vernacular of Hoosierdom and the woods country of the North. The author levies on the vocabulary of the sciences and the classics for many a noun and adjective and, with Rooseveltian license, now and then coins a word. The reader's interest will be gripped from cover to cover, albeit he may occasionally need a dictionary. R. C. A.

INTRODUCTION Construction of Phase I, Section A, of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System required that six underground stations be built using a cut and cover excavation technique. For five of these stations, soldier piles, used as support of excavation, were installed with tip elevations well below the bottom of the excavation. However, in the case of the sixth subway station, the Mondawmin Station, soldier piles were installed only through soil and decomposed rock, with the tips of the piles being stopped well above the bottom of the excavation in partially decomposed rock. Below the tips of the soldier piles, and below a cut slope where piles were not installed, the sides of the excavation consisted of partially weathered and fresh rock and were supported by a combination of rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. An extensive installation of geotechnical instrumentation permitted detailed monitoring of horizontal and vertical movements of the soldier piles and the walls of the excavation. Preliminary studies indicated that the excavation support system selected for the Mondawmin Station would have several advantages over a conventional system consisting of soldier piles extending to the bottom of the excavation, braced with prestressed struts. These advantages included lower cost of installation, a decreased time required for installation, and a more open excavation for the contractor during construction of the station. The Mondawmin Station is situated in the northwestern quadrant of Baltimore City, approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) from the center of the City. The station lies midway in a project 12.9 km (8 miles) long identified as Phase I, Section A, of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit

In situ stresses are one of the key inputs to a successful underground excavation design. Because of the complex mechanisms involved in arriving at the current state of stress at a point in the Earth’s crust, often the only reliable way of estimating in situ stresses is by actual measurement. In the United States coal mines, overcoring relief method is by far the most popular technique used for estimating the virgin stress field. Typically, for stress measurement with overcoring, a vertical borehole is drilled into the roof or floor of an underground coal mine opening to a certain distance and change in borehole diameter is monitored at multiple points along the length of the hole when this borehole is overcored. For the measured stresses to represent the pre-mining stress field, the measurement points should be located beyond the influence zone of the mine opening. Actual data from several US coal mines have been collected to check if the measured stresses by overcoring represent true in situ stresses. The data indicate that most of the stress measurements were within the excavation influence zone. A three-dimensional numerical modeling methodology was applied to one of the collected cases to correct the measured stresses for the excavation influence. The modeling approach demonstrated the usefulness of integrating numerical modeling into a stress measurement program to estimate ‘true’ in situ stresses.

THE thermocouple as a device for the measurement of temperature is rivaled only by the platinum-resistance thermometer. Both instruments are capable of the highest precision, but the thermocouple, on account of its cheapness, ease of construction, and small cross-section, is finding a continually widening field of usefulness for industrial control as well as for laboratory measurements. Formerly, the thermocouple was subject to two disadvantages: errors due to lack of homogeneity of the metal and the labor involved in the interpolation between fixed points on the temperature scale. Former publications from the Geo-physical Laboratory have described the methods' for the selection and testing of thermocouple wire and have presented standard calibration curves2 for platinum-platinrhodiun and copper-constantan couples, so that the most important objections to the thermocouple as a precision thermometer have been removed. The calibration tables published in 1914 covered the range 0-1755° for the platinum-platinrhodium couple and 0-350° for copper-constantan. It has seemed desirable to extend the table for copper-constantan to -200 and also to include a table for the Hoskins thermocouple. Accordingly, in this paper, the new tables are presented, together with a brief explanation of their use; and, finally, certain diagrams and a paragraph on "cold-junction corrections" are given. Standard Calibration Tables.-In Fig. 1, which illustrates how the electromotive force (e.m.f.) of each of the three couples varies with the temperature, the temperatures of one junction are plotted as abscissas and the corresponding thermo-e.m.f.'s as ordinates. The present work has two objectives: first to develop an experimental method which would give some new information on the micromechanism of the reduction of oxides by gases at elevated temperature; second to clari,fy the intermediate phases of the W-0 system, formed during the reduction. A Galvanic cell with the solid electrolyte , ZrO2 . CaO, was imbedded in powders of W03, CuO, or Fe20s with two measuring electvodes and with a reference electrode. The change of the intraparticle gas composition was measured at An oxygen concentration cell consists of two electrodes separated by an electrolyte through which the transference of electrical charge is accomplished predominantly by the migration of oxygen ions. Many works have been reported on the oxygen con- 600" to loo@ C during the reduction by the gas mixture of hydrogen and argon. The intraparticle gas composition changes stepwise with time. The electromotive force of such temporary interruption corresponds to the equilibrium electromotive force of two solid phases formed during the reduction. 5. Development of Initial Probing System 5. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of a variety of potential methods for initial probing showed that the optical system using closed circuit television (CCTV) and the sonar, or acoustic ranging, system were the most promising. The former is capable of pro¬viding a visual display of the mine passages in a clear, non-smoky environment, and the latter is capable of providing a map of the spatial location of the coal surfaces making up the entries, as well as objects, such as cribs, mining machines, etc., in the passages in both smoky and non-smoky environments. The sonar system used in conjunction with the CCTV in a clear environment can greatly assist in resolving the spatial distribution of objects seen on the TV screen. Further, in a smoky environment the interpretation of the sonar information could be facilitated if some visual information were also available. CCTV systems exist but require some modifications to suit this particular application. The Industrial Hazards and Communications Division of the Bureau has an ongoing program for the development of such a CCTV system. Rather than duplicate this effort in developing a CCTV system, it was decided to evaluate the possibility of utilizing their system for initial probing, while continuing with the develop¬ment of a system which would work in any environment, including the presence of dense smoke. The concept of using sonar for the initial probing of mine passages represents the application of new technology requiring development. The results of such a development effort undertaken during the course of this program are described in the following sections.

In the examination of an undeveloped prospect a decision must be arrived at from an inspection of the outcrops and the exposures in a few shallow pits. Prospects that are offered for sale rarely expose any important quantity of good ore, work having usually been stopped when the immediate exploration no longer yielded favorable results. It should be borne in mind, furthermore, that a great majority of prospects have been examined many times, and if of conspicuous promise, would have been acquired-for development. In most cases the problem for the engineer, therefore, is to discover the traces of a valuable mineralization that has disappeared through solution, or the conditions that indicate the possibility, or probability, of underlying secondary enrichments. The available data being meager, every feature should be the subject of careful study-the condition of the outcrop, the structural relationships, the associations of minerals, the alterations of wall rocks, the chances for underlying enrichments, and so forth, as well as the actual assay value of the material exposed. It is frequently advisable to spend the time and money necessary to have trenches dug at various significant points along a promising outcrop; such exposures, even if the depth attained is slight, often disclose conditions that are not apparent at the actual surface, as for example, the existence of soft minerals and the distribution of the various minerals through the mass of the deposit. Trenches also permit samples to be taken from points that were not accessible during former examinations. Strong, persistent outcrops of uniform width may be taken to indicate the probable size and character of the underlying vein,

DURing the past year considerable work dealing with physical properties of cartridge brass was done at the University of Michigan in cooperation with the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army. This paper gives some of the data bearing on the effect of the anneal, previous to the final reduction-or rolling, on the physical properties, particularly the hardness. Various phases of the subject of physical properties of cartridge brass have been presented by different investigators. Mathewson and Phillips1 refer to the work of Grard, in 1909, as the first systematic presentation of the relation between temperature and time of anneal, changing of physical properties and microstructure, and the previous reduction by cold rolling. They discuss the relation between time and temperature of annealand the previous reduction by cold rolling; also the relation between physical properties and grain size of annealed brass. The degree of deformation previous to the annealing was found to determine the temperature at which recrystallization and corresponding changes in physical Properties would take place. relation between grain size and Brinell hardness, found the hardness for low-temperature annealing to be dependent on the previous degree of reduction, while for anneals above a certain temperature the hardness after the anneal was independent of the degree of reduction. Actual differences in hardness, due to the degree of reduction, disappear only on annealing at 600" C. or above; though the differences for metal subjected to different degrees of reduction and annealed at temperatures between 350" and 600" C. were found to be relatively small. Advances in the production of quality steel have emphasized the need for greater knowledge of the amount and distribution of oxygen in the steel. Control of inclusion content and quality is largely dependent on such knowledge. While many analytical methods have been devised for the accomplishment of this end, few are without serious limitations in accuracy, convenience, or skill required in application. Usually at least two methods are necessary to determine total oxygen and constituent oxides. Because of the great importance of this problem and the specific interest in the application of such methods of analysis, the various procedures were carefully reviewed at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, with the view of developing a method free from the limitations mentioned above. Intensive experimentation finally led to an improved iodine extraction analysis described by Cunningham and Price.1 After this had been thoroughly checked from the standpoint of the analytical chemist, it was rechecked from that of the metallurgist. This involved preparation of a number of small heats of varying composition with determination of total oxygen in the molten metal by the alumina method2 and an analysis of the solidified material without the aluminum addition by means of iodine extraction; the oxides of iron, manganese, silicon and aluminum also being determined by the iodine analysis. The report of this work constitutes the subject of this paper. The Iodine Method Fundamentally the iodine method is well established. The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

The aim of instruction in a metallurgical laboratory is to make real the principles on which metallurgical processes and operations are based, and to foster the spirit of investigation. The materials with which experiments are carried out are ores, metals, and metallic compounds. The method varies with the end sought. A class may work as a whole, each member contributing his share to the solution of a problem, or the students may carry on investigations independently; the former exemplifies class-research; the latter, individual research. It is with a branch of the former, with special reference to ore-treatment, that the present paper deals. In smelting an ore by a well-established process, the result is shown by analyzing the products to see whether their compositions correspond to those calculated in making up the charge; by taking account of stock to show the distribution of metal in the different products made and the losses from dust and volatilization; by casting a thermal balance to find the distribution and losses of heat; and by making a cost-sheet to ascertain, as far as possible, the necessary outlay of money. In lixiviation and amalgamation, the mode of operating has to be varied to adapt a process to the individual ore. Here a number of tests become necessary. Each will consist of a series of experiments with one variable, in order to find the conditions under which the variable gives the best result; a summary of several tests will give the best method of operating. The available data being meager, every feature should be the subject of careful study-the condition of the outcrop, the structural relationships, the associations of minerals, the alterations of wall rocks, the chances for underlying enrichments, and so forth, as well as the actual assay value of the material exposed. It is frequently advisable to spend the time and money necessary to have trenches dug at various significant points along a promising outcrop; such exposures, even if the depth attained is slight, often disclose conditions that are not apparent at the actual surface, as for example, the existence of soft minerals and the distribution of the various minerals through the mass of the deposit. Trenches also permit samples to be taken from points that were not accessible during former examinations. Strong, persistent outcrops of uniform width may be taken to indicate the probable size and character of the underlying vein,
