"THE MAYO AREA was prospected as early as 1887. The first major activity started in 1898, when the Stewart River and its tributaries were examined for placer deposits, and in succeeding years the district became a small producer of placer gold. The first discovery of the lead-zinc-silver mineralization which has become the main interest of the district occurred in 1906, when a vein was found in the canyon of Galena Creek on the northwest slope of Galena Hill. This deposit was later known as the Silver King mine. In 1919 further discoveries were made on Keno Hill, approximately 15 miles east of the Silver King, the most important being the No.9 vein. Directly or indirectly, these finds are attributable to the search for placer gold, as galena was frequently found in the stream gravels.The 1919 Keno Hill discoveries were acquired by Yukon Gold Co. and operated through a subsidiary, Keno Hill Ltd., from 1920 to 1923. Most of the production came from No.9 vein. In 1921 Treadwell Yukon Corporation entered the field and acquired the Ladue mine. This company continued to operate for 21 years. It acquired in succession the Ladue, Sadie, Friendship, Lucky Queen, Elsa, Silver King, and Calumet mines. Its record of successful operations is very largely the achievement of the late Livingston Wernecke. Under his direction, the Treadwell Yukon Corp. produced metals with a gross value in excess of $21,000,000, in the face of greater transportation problems than exist today and with considerably lower metal prices.Treadwell Yukon ceased operations in 1942. Its entire assets were acquired in 1946 by United Keno Hill Mines Ltd., which has substantially increased the original holdings. It has drawn the bulk of its production from the Hector mine, adjacent to the Calumet. The Hector was not developed by Treadwell Yukon because of legal disputes among the vendors. It has proven to be the largest deposit yet discovered in the district."

"The paper covers the design and implementation of an industrial dense medium cyclone plant for carbonaceous iron ore, the proving of efficiency as well as the development of a predictive model for plant control. The VA Erzberg GmbH mines about 12 Mio.t of carbonaceous rock ore at the “Steirische Erzberg”. Due to increased demand of the Austrian steel plants, the production of ore concentrate was raised by 30 % up to 3.0 Mio t/a during the last 5 years. One of the projects to realize the increase in capacity at improved concentrate quality was the implementation of a dense medium cyclone plant for the fine size fraction – 8 +1 mm replacing the former dry permanent magnetic drum separators. By physical separation the siderite variety “spateisenstein” (42% Fe) of a density of 3,8 g/cm³ is separated from ankerite (10 – 17% Fe), the second iron bearing carbonate with a density of 3,2 g/cm³, dolomite, calcite and silicate bearing schists. The feasibility of the process was proven by the test results obtained from a test rig, that was constructed and operated in close cooperation between the Chair of Mineral Processing, Montanuniversitaet Leoben and VA Erzberg GmbH. The density separation surpassed the efficiency of magnetic separation clearly shown by •- values. The plant performance tests (capacity 120 t/h) verify the cut densities defined by Tromp T50 -values and the assigned efficiency found in the pilot tests at varied settings of media density, pressure drop, cone angle and apex diameter. The test rig as well as the final process will be presented. In order to create a tool to predict the performance of the DMS in the centrifugal field at various settings for varying feed composition the experimental results from size and density testing are analyzed in a modified way to obtain physically justified, smooth approximations for the performance curves. Models developed on coal washing plants are checked for their validity at increased densities."

"The present study deals with the kinetic studies of reduction of some selected transition metal tungstates with hydrogen. The measurements were carried out by the isothermal thermogravimetric method. Shallow powder beds were employed in order to avoid the effects due to transport phenomena affecting the reaction rate. In this way, the chemical reaction rates could be selectively studied. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range 873 - 1173 K. From the experimental data, the activation energies were evaluated and were found to be around 88 kJ / mol in the case of both iron as well as cobalt tungstates indicating the similarities in W-O bonds in both cases. The activation energies obtained are discussed in the light of the position of the transition metal in the periodic table as well as the thermodynamic stabilities of the various tungstates.IntroductionThe tungsten containing hard metals, characterized by high density, belong to a class of two-phase metal matrix composites. While these types of materials have traditionally found their applications within the defence industry as armour-piercing projectiles, counterbalance in helicopters and military aircrafts, outer casings of hand-grenades, etc., commercial applications for this class of alloys also exist, including radiation shields, penetrators for the oil industry, turbines for turbo-jet engines and a wide range of sports related parts. A possible route to the production of these alloys is to reduce the tungstates such as FeW04, Co W04 and NiW04 using a reductant like hydrogen or carbon monoxide. In order to have a better understanding of the processes involved in the production, it is important to have a knowledge of the reduction kinetics for these tungstates. According to the knowledge of the present authors, while the reduction ofNiW04 by hydrogen gas has been investigated earlier in the present laboratorypl no systematic reduction study has been carried out previously for the tungstates of iron, cobalt."

The Tóth adsorption isotherm-model was derived and has been widely used for the inhomogeneous solid surfaces. The three-parameter isotherm incorporates the effect of the interaction between the adsorbed substances as well. All classic isotherms can be clearly derived from this one. Bio sorption is the sequestering of dissolved components, i.e. metals from aqueous environment by living or dead biomass. The mechanism of the bio sorption is rather complex and predominantly refers to the affinity of the chemical functional groups: acetoamido groups of chitin, structural polysaccharides, amino and phosphate groups in nucleic acids, amino, amido sulfhydryl and carboxyl groups in proteins, hydroxyls in polysaccharides, sulphates, etc. towards the soluted substances, i.e. heavy metal ions. The physisorption, as well as the micro precipitation also play a role in the bio sorption mechanism. The description of such a complex process can be done by a model reflecting this complexity. According to our experimental results obtained using algae and immobilised algae for the sorption of heavy metal cations, the most appropriate model for such a description is the Tóth-isotherm, the parameters of which can be interpreted. Flotation process is also a very complex one, the overall result of which depends on the partial results of many micro processes and parameters. The particle interaction which very often takes place in the flotation systems makes the phenomenon even more complex. The flotation kinetic model with particle interaction was already introduced by author in 1994 and further developed in 2000. In this paper based on the experimental results obtained with metallic particles in case of recycling flotation the applicability of the Tóth-equation as an alternative flotation kinetic model for the systems with particle interaction is proved. The applicability of Tóth-model in mineral processing demonstrates again its universal character and the great talent of the late József Tóth, great Hungarian chemist. During the spray forming process, a continuous molten metal stream is atomized by impinging high speed inert gas jets. In the generated spray cone, the resulting metal droplets are rapidly cooled by the huge temperature difference to the surrounding gas phase and thereby partly solidified during flight. After a certain flight and residence time inside the spray cone, the droplets impinge onto the solid substrate and form the product (deposit) by compaction. Material properties of this preform strongly depend on several process parameters and especially on the thermal and kinetic state of the deposited droplets at the point of impingement. Smaller droplets may cool very fast due to their low mass and impinge onto the product in a completely solidified state as solid metal powder particles. Larger droplets with big mass contain a higher amount of thermal energy and impact during the state of phase change or still as completely liquid. It is obvious, that a certain amount of liquid content in the droplets is needed for forming a homogeneous deposit. Therefore, the thermal history of metal droplets during flight in the spray cone is of great importance for overall process modelling and control. Modelling the effects of the impinging droplet mass on the formation and heat balance of the deposit, the thermal conditions of the droplet stream need to be temporary and spatially averaged at different locations. Averaging may be achieved in different ways, giving alternative results. A first method is averaging over the droplets total enthalpy which consists of the thermal content and the remaining latent heat of fusion within the droplets. A second method may yield the average over the heat content and the solid fraction separately. Results of these two methods depend on the application and the kind of information which one wants to achieve and show some deviations, which will be discussed in terms of consolidation and energy conservation of the deposit.

"HP-Pile foundations are the most favorable type of foundations for bridges because of their constructability, versatility with regard to subsoil conditions, and settlement controllability. For many years, bridge engineers have puzzled over the most economical way to orient HP-Piles: Should the strong axis be oriented in the longitudinal direction or in the transverse direction? The accurate design of foundations may considerably reduce construction costs. In order to answer this question, 3-D finite element models will be set up to analyze the effects of pile orientation on bridge behavior. Because seismic loading usually controls the structural design in seismic zones, it is important to investigate the effects of pile orientation under such loading. HP-Piles are designed conservatively due to the uncertainty of the dynamic soil-structure interaction during earthquakes. For the bridge substructure, the soil’s stiffness plays an important role in load distribution as the soil and piles act as a combined system to resist the seismic loading. The dynamic soil-structure interaction mechanisms of bridges in both the longitudinal and the transverse directions will be investigated through the use of 3-D finite element models. The numerical models will realistically simulate the soil-pileabutment- wingwall-superstructure system subjected to seismic loads. Nonlinear soil springs will be employed to model the non-elastic soil behavior. The analysis will provide theoretical support to the design practice.IntroductionAs sustainability has asserted itself in the public’s eye, bridge professionals have rushed to develop criteria for sustainable bridges. The three main categories that define and distinguish sustainable bridges are: lower energy input, increased durability, and simplified deconstruction. By optimizing the structural members, the engineer is able to reduce the material quantities for the bridge, effectively reducing the energy input for the bridge (Hunt; Whittemore). A deeper understanding of soilfoundation- structure mechanism will facilitate sustainable bridge design by lowering energy input and increasing the service life of bridges (Rietz et al.)."

"A three-dimensional finite element model with moving heat source was developed for pulsed-laser powder deposition (PLPD) process. Experiments were conducted to study the repair of superalloy components using the PLPD process. During the experiments, IN 625 powder was deposited on a superalloy substrate similar to IN 738. The process was modeled using three-dimensional finite element analysis. Element birth and death technique was used in the finite element model for simulating the deposition of powder layer on the substrate. A moving distributed heat source was used in the thermal model for realistic simulation of the process. Temperature dependent thermal material properties including enthalpy were used for the powder and the substrate in the transient thermal analyses. The fusion zones and peak temperature distributions of the deposits were predicted from the transient thermal analyses.IntroductionPoor weldability is a critical issue of superalloy repairing. The microstructural directionality of the superalloy components are disrupted when repaired by the fusion welding processes. Currently there is no widely accepted method to economically and reliably repair directionally solidified superalloys components. Pulsed laser powder deposition process (PLPD) is a promising repairing technique as the substrate is not severely affected by the heat source.In this study PLPD technology is used as the tool for superalloy repairing. In most of the land based turbine engines the directionally solidified nickel based superalloy similar to IN 738 [1] is used as the bucket material. The turbine engine blade tips are subjected to a combination of extreme operating conditions and corrosive environment. The tip of the nickel based turbine engine blades can be repaired using IN 625 material as suggested in the literature [1-2]. IN 625 is considered to be ductile and strong enough for the purpose of Ni based turbine engine blade tip repair[1-2]. During the present PLPD investigation, IN 625 powder was used as the deposit material on an experimental super alloy substrate similar to IN 738 superalloy used as the cast superalloy for the turbine engine blades."

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. Trench cutter systems have been used in civil engineering for the least 30 years for the installation of deep cut-off walls, retaining walls and foundation systems. The systems are constantly advanced to achieve greater depth, penetrate through harder rocks a provide a bigger footprint of the cutter. The state-of-the-art equipment can reach down to 250 m vertical depth and penetrate all different types of soils and rocks up to 150 MPa unconfined compressive strength.In mining, especially in commodities with a high value and where the ore deposit has a small footprint, cutter mining with vertical attack from the existing ground level will be a new, cost-efficient approach where conventional open pit mining is not economically feasible due to a high stripping ratio. The same applies for open pit mines that have reached the end of their conventional mine life and where going underground is also uneconomical. The BAUER Cutter Mining System, which has been adapted to the special needs of mining, is a new technology that will allow mining at depths of up to 250 m.The same system can be also applied to ore dykes, be it vertical or slightly inclined, concentrating the excavation on the actual orebody and minimising the strip ratio and the contamination of ore. The system can be adapted to the dimension of the dykes or veins and to the rock conditions.BAUER’s latest approach is to use the vertical cutter mining technology for the extraction of sea floor massive sulfides from the seabed in deep ocean waters. Due to the compact footprint of the system and the vertical attack for mining, extraction of the ore can be concentrated on the hot spots, minimising the environmental impact on the sea floor both for mining and manoeuvring the remote-controlled mining tool.CITATION:Schwank, S K, 2015. Introduction The manufacture of some asbestos products involves the use of asbestos in combination with water, cement and granular fillers. This type of production is often called the wet or semi-wet process and requires the use of either pressure or vacuum to eliminate the excess water in the fibrous blend so that the product may develop the proper strength during the curing stage. Asbestos - cement products available today are numerous and are a valuable contribution to the building industry. Their production in quantity depends upon the type of equipment employed, the speed at which it can be operated, and the factors involving the? blending of asbestos, cement, water, and fillers. Assuming that all mechanical troubles at a plant have been eliminated or are under control it is still advisable to study the basic properties of the raw materials used in the asbestos-cement products. The type of cement used is an important factor, but usually the manufacturer of the cement is willing to work with the asbestos development engineer and recommend the proper type to be used for the product. The source of the water should not be overlooked as a general factor involved in the production cycle. Waters containing a high percentage of contamination such as silts, humus, or soluble salts may adversely affect the setting of the cement or cause a slowing down of the production rate in the factory. Asbestos in combination with cement is an ideal material fo1 building products. It is inorganic, will not deteriorate, and can be handled by mechanical equipment with a minimum reduction of fibre length. The many physical properties peculiar to asbestos fibres should be well understood by the manufacturer. They may be briefly enumerated as follows: fibre strength, fibre composition, sliminess, length, harshness, softness, and filterability or porosity. This last named property is important and it is the purpose of this paper to present some basic studies on filtration as applied to production problems.

The critical distance determination test through direct recording for the mine in Phase 03 was carried out in January 2024, and in it the vibration and pressure models were obtained for the Sedimentary breccia unit. The method of obtaining the records is based on the capture of individual pressure waves generated by distant loads, sequenced in periods of 600 ms for easy identification. The test set up corresponds to a variation of that used to obtain the vibration model, and uses 08 wells for loads and 04 for instrumentation. The results apply a safety factor of 1.2 and 1.5, being 16,000 PSI and 13,250 PSI respectively. The values are valid for any distance greater than 5.5 m, this being the minimum established between wells for loads according to the configuration defined in the field, also considering that in 5.0 m of instrumentation the section of the drill hole with the sensor called S1 collapsed. The results of the analysis of the test, generated with Heavy Anfo 82 explosive, with a final density of 1.15 g/cc, are presented. The results of the modeling and generation of the graphs and tables presented show behavior in line with the concept of scaled distance. It is important to consider that in water conditions there is a high impact by the condition, which causes the records to be higher than those expected in dry conditions and present less variability. It is for the above reason that the row corresponding to distance with safety factor 1.5 is declared valid. The results are only valid for the rock analyzed, whose medium is homogeneous and constant in terms of lithological composition and that present similar resistance characteristics, fracture frequency and water table levels. As future steps, the objective is to quantify the increase in pressure generated between wells by analyzing time and sequence factors. This analysis aims to explain the occurrence of dynamic pressure events in areas where critical safety distances are observed.

The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. "The greatest mining center in the state of Utah is the incorporated town of Bingham about twenty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The principal industry of this vicinity, prior to the early fall of 1 863, was lumbering and the first saw-mill in the state was built near the mouth of Bingham Canyon. Early in the fall of that year, George B. Ogilvie discovered gold and shortly afterward the first mining district in the state was organized. Some writers place the discovery of gold in the canyon in the late fifties. If this be so, however, the matter was kept extremely quiet because no mining was engaged in until after Ogilvie's discovery.Bingham was a placer mining camp, producing about one million dollars' worth of dust and nuggets from placers up and down the canyon and in Bear Gulch until early in the seventies, or about ten years after the discovery of gold, when a large body of argentiferous lead ore was discovered and soon after heavy shipments were made from a half dozen or more properties.In 1 8 74, A. H. and George L. Bemis erected the first concentrating plant in the state for the treatment of sulphide lead ores.The history of the camp as a producer of copper begins in the summer of 1 88 7, when Enos A. Wall noticed, in observing prospecting drifts and inclines driven some years before, the discoloration caused by the coppery solution. As a large part of the adjacent ground had been abandoned, he located two claims, which he called the ""Dick Mackintosh"" and the ""Charles Reid,"" after two of his friends.Late in 1896, the Highland Boy Mine produced sulphide ore rich in copper, causing a revival of interest in the copper potentialities of the camp, and during the next seven years a number of new claims were located ."

Capricorn Copper Pty Ltd (CCPL) are operating the Capricorn Copper Mine located at Gunpowder, Queensland. As current holder of the environmental authority for the site, CCPL have obligations to rehabilitate areas of the mine that are no longer operational and have the potential to cause/contribute to environmental harm. CCPL sought a voluntary Transitional Environmental Program (TEP) to provide an agreed program of works to cap and rehabilitate the former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility. The voluntary TEP contained conditions that were required to be met, to reduce the potential for environmental harm from the facility. The former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility commenced use in the early 1970’s, and is an unlined valley in-fill structure, contemporary in design compared with other such approved structures of the era. The decommissioned Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility, now known as the Old Tailings Storage Facility (Old TSF), has been a legacy source of contamination due to the existing capping not meeting modern cover criterion, and allowing oxidisation and infiltration to the underlying acid forming tailings resulting in Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) from the facility. A cover design for the Old TSF, and other mine waste storages onsite that required clay capping, had been proposed by previous operators. Under the TEP cover design phase, it was identified that a key constraint was the lack of significant quantities of low permeability clay onsite. The lack of available clay prompted the consideration of alternate lining materials for the Old TSF, with a Bituminous Geomembrane Liner (BGM) being adopted as the preferred alternative. The BGM compared favourably with clay-based materials on seepage analysis, and led to other benefits by eliminating the need for borrowing clay off site, reducing the site’s environmental footprint, and reducing construction time. The BGM cover system on the Old TSF is being monitored with the intent to use this as a case study to confirm expected performance, enabling the cover design to potentially be adopted on the remainder of the site’s mine waste storages that require capping.

"The directional solidification method is routinely used to produce polycrystalline silicon, an important material for the photovoltaic (PV) industry. The form of the solid-liquid interface during solidification has considerable influence on the material quality. The dissolved impurities and the solid inclusions above the solidification front affect the interface and may cause interface breakdown. We investigate the effects of pushing and engulfment of silicon carbide (SiC) particles by the solidification front during directional solidification of silicon. We employ a 12kg directional-crystallization furnace to cast the molten silicon. We use upgraded metallurgical grade silicon with low concentrations of metallic impurities (< 5ppm) and a high content of carbon (700 ppm) present as SiC particles. Samples from the cast polycrystalline silicon ingots are investigated by light microscope. The expected interaction of impurities with the solidification front is investigated theoretically using empirical models. The data obtained from the models are in good agreement with the experimental results.IntroductionDirectional solidification is a well-known method for producing multi-crystalline silicon for the PV industry. In this method a planar front, achieved during solidification, results in a clearly defined interface between the solid and the liquid phase. The solubility of major impurities is higher in the liquid than in the solid phase. Therefore, directional solidification will work as a purification process where the impurities are retained in the liquid phase [1]. Apart from the process of removing the dissolved elements in molten silicon, the directional solidification plays also another role. It will interact with the solid particles that may be present in the melt. When a liquid containing an insoluble particle is solidified, three distinct interaction phenomena are observed: engulfment of particles, continuous pushing, and entrapment [2]. The term “engulfment” is used to describe incorporation of a particle by a planar interface, and the term “entrapment” is used for particle incorporation by a cellular or dendritic interface (see Figure 1) [3]."

"The recovery of lead from battery paste has been investigated for a long time and with the use of many different electrolytes. A number of processes have been presented, but none of them reached even the demonstration step. Engitec has developed a new concept for the battery paste electrowinning using a chloride electrolyte fed through a very innovative flow cell. The process has passed the lab and the demo scale and it is ready to be introduced on the market. In this paper, a description of the process will be provided.INTRODUCTIONThe need for improved energy storage systems as well as the introduction of commercially viable electric vehicles is providing a strong compulsion toward the research of new batteries. The lead battery is playing an important role because it is inexpensive, reliable and it is the most recycled material. This last aspect marks the lead acid battery as quite peculiar making it both the primary lead based product and the main raw material for lead production.In the last years the legislative pressure has become very strong and has forced the lead production to react through the introduction of important process innovations and market changes. The dispersive products, such as additives for paints and for fuel as well as bullets, have been practically banned all over the world while the battery market continues to grow. The lead acid battery remains the cheapest and most integrated energy storage system available and is improving to meet the new technical challenges. THE construction of rescue-apparatus on the principle of furnishing the wearer with air from a tank containing it under high pressure was given up by inventors about 20 years ago. Such an apparatus must supply continuously, for not less than two hours, nearly 50 liters of pure air at atmospheric pressure per minute, or a total of 6,000 liters (210 cu. ft.); and a cylinder containing this amount of air, under 2,000 lb. pressure, would weigh 180 lb. or more. Although apparatus has been recently constructed utilizing liquified air, no experiments have been made to determine the regularity with which the air is generated, nor has its chemical composition been determined. Moreover, the chief objection to such an apparatus is the&apos; difficulty and cost of keeping on hand a large quantity of liquified air. The system of furnishing the wearer of a breathing-apparatus with air which has given the best results, and has found employment in all the devices now in practical use, is that in which the air contained in the human lungs at the beginning of the work is regenerated by the apparatus. By means of chemicals, such as caustic potash and caustic soda, the carbonic acid gas, CO., exhaled is absorbed, and the oxygen that has been consumed is replaced from a tank containing this gas under high pressure. The pressure of the oxygen (which is 1,875 lb. in the two cylinders at the beginning of the work) is automatically reduced to 75 lb., and is sufficient to keep the air inside of the apparatus in constant circulation, and to force it to pass through the chemicals provided for the absorption of the CO, gas. The behavior in electric field of fine particles present in aqueous solution was measured in order to apply to the classification of fine particles. The sample particles used are spherical polystyrene particles with the average diameter of 0.03 µm, 0.1 µm, 1.0 µm, 4.3 µm and 9.6 µm. Electrophoretic mobility and zeta potential of various particles are measured by an instrument based on the principle of the laser Doppler effect. The influence of temperature, electrolyte concentration on the electro-phoretic mobility was investigated for various polystyrene particles. The electrophoretic mobility increases with increasing pH and temperature of suspensions. The measured electrophoretic mobilities are different from electrolyte concentration and particle size. The electrophoretic retardation effect and relaxation effect are considered to explain the behavior of fine particles in electric field by applying the electro kinetic theory of Wiersema et al. For all particle size, the electrophoretic mobility decreases rapidly in high concentration of KNO3 such as 0.1 mol/dm3due to the compression of electric double layer The forces acting the particles in electric field are considered to be electrical force, friction force and some other forces like relaxation effect and electrophoretic retardation effect which appear in ionic behavior. It is considered that the particle moving velocity depends on the particle size. When the particle size is less than 1µm, the velocity increases with increasing the particle size. On the oth-er hand, the velocity deceases with increasing in particle size, when the particle size is larger than 1µm. This phenomenon is considered to be interesting from the viewpoint of classification for fine particles. We found that the electrophoretic mobility of 1.0µm particles is larger than that of 0.1µm particles, and that it is possible to classify fine particles by using the difference of electrophoretic mobility by many experimental results. The phenomena can be explained by the forces acting the fine particles in the electric field. We can apply the behavior to classification of fine particles.

"The Miami-West Palm Beach belt of silica sand, which may be suitable for the manufacture of high-grade glass, extends 65 miles northward from the neighborhood of Miami to the vicinity of West Palm Beach, The sand presumably originated in the host rocks constituting the oceanward slope of the Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont Plateau of Georgia and the Carolinas. The sand now lies in a long, narrow, and probably thin belt that forms a dune-capped terrace marking a previous stage of submergence. The highest dune crests appear to be no more than 30 feet above sea level, and the water table is about 10 or 15 feet below the general level of the terrace.The width of the belt in several places is known to be more than a mile, and the thickness of the clean glass sand sampled ranged from 4 to more than 7 feet. Visual inspection and the meager data indicate the existence of bodies of glass sand large enough to supply foreseeable markets.Analyses of three samples indicate that beneficiation would make the sand suitable for the better grades of ordinary and flint glass.The prospective grade and quantity of sand, an available market in Florida for glassware, and the expectation of postwar expansion of the new industry of glass producing justify more detailed exploratory work and beneficiation testing.U. S. Route No. 1, Old Dixie Highway, the Seaboard Railway, and the Florida East Coast Railway, all substantially parallel and usually within a width of a mile or two, run along parts of the belt or between it and the coast. In addition to many streets and unpaved roads, a paved road crosses the belt at right angles about every 5 miles. Numerous towns are situated within or near the belt. Any area selected for a mining, processing, and manufacturing plant would be near a railroad, a highway, and water and also accessible to public utilities.The subtropical climate, famous for its pleasantly warm winters, would preclude seasonal interruption of plant operations."

The Sappington Bridge, a steel arch span bridge constructed in 1904 over the Meramec River, was demolished due to its advanced state of deterioration. The demolition was a project to benefit Crawford County, Missouri, the U.S. Army, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the University of Missouri – Rolla (UMR) was conducted jointly by the UMR Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center (RMERC) and the UMR Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies (CIES). By arrangement with Crawford County, a 55-foot span of the old bridge was brought to the University Structures Laboratory in Rolla, while the longer, 200-foot span of the bridge was demolished using preburning and explosives. Originally, the longer span was to be blown up by C Company of the 5th Engineer Battalion (from Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri) under the supervision of personnel from UMR. Unfortunately, permission for the operation from the Department of the Army could not be obtained in time to meet permitting requirements for the demolition. Therefore, a commercial demolition contractor was employed to perform the demolition, and to remove the scrap.
