Meeting, Aug. 20, 1913, B te, Montana, at 12.45 p.m.-On, the written request of 27 members of oft Institute residing in Montana, the Montana Local Section was established, and the following Committee was appointed by the President of the Institute to complete the organization : E. P. Mathewson, Chair pan; Frank M. Smith, Vice-Chairman; D. C. Bard, Secre-tary, Montana State School of Mines, Butte, Mont., Oscar Rohn, James L. Bruce. The President reported the appointment of a Committee on Mining Law, the names of whose officers and members are given on page xxxv of this Bulletin, and these appointments were approved. It was voted: That the Committee on dining Law be requested to establish a Sub-Committee on Censorship, a majority of whom shall be lawyers; and, further, that no paper on mining law be recommended for publication to the Committee on Papers and Publications, unless it is previously approved by the Sub-Committee on Censorship of the Committee on Mining Law. The President reported progress in the matter of co-operation between the Institute and the United States Bureau of Mines, through Committees of the Institute. The President reviewed the history of plans for a union or affiliation with the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and the following minute was then adopted : " The Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers has carefully considered for several months the question of union or affiliation with the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America ; and, while at an earlier time and under other circumstances, such. a union might have been accomplished, yet under present circumstances the Directors of the Institute deem such union inexpedient. "While thanking the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America for its consideration of the matter, we believe that further discussion of the subject will serve no useful end, and we conclude it best that the Society and the Institute continue their useful functions and friendly relations side by side, as heretofore."

At the session of the Bethlehem, Pa., meeting of the Institute, held in the Durham Cave, at Durham Furnace, on the afternoon of May 20, 1886, I exhibited some specimens of a fibrous white efflorescence which had exuded from the pig-iron at that time being made at Durham Furnace. As some of the members expressed an interest in the matter, I promised to have complete analyses made, and to report the result in a paper to the Institute. The presentation of the paper has been long delayed, but there appears to be no other literature on this subject, and it may still be of interest. The efflorescence was found to exude from the pig-iron where the pigs were broken hot from the sow; the entire fracture of both pigs and sow often being entirely coated with this material. Sometimes there was only a white surface, as if the ends had been daubed with white paint; but in most cases the material was found in small globules and in thin sheets. If the iron had been broken a little too hot, arid in consequence had " bled " on separating from the sow, some of the efflorescence would be found deposited 011 the iron-drippings, and on the incrustations of sand in the pig-bed. The globules were irregular in shape, some of them equivalent in mass to spheres three-eighths of an inch in diameter, but most of them much smaller. The thin sheets were also irregular in shape, and, although they were not porous, were often riot thicker than a spider-web. Some of them were produced by the peeling-off' of the thin coating on the pigs above referred to. They were opalescent in appearance, and some of them had an area equivalent to two square inches; but the largest pieces would fall apart in handling. Several ounces of the efflorescence could often be picked up, or scraped off the pigs, after each cast.

THE genesis of some orebodies has been explained by the mingling and chemical interaction of water solutions of different compositions and the consequent precipitation of the mineral load of one or both solutions at their confluence. While this process can be proved in the laboratory, rarely can a positive demonstration be found in nature, for the conditions at the time an ore deposit is being worked are usually entirely different from those that existed when the orebody was formed. For this reason, the present deposition of copper carbonate in the southern end of the Briggs Mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co. near Bisbee, Ariz., is of great interest. The developed orebodies in the Calumet and Arizona mines are roughly confined to two broad parallel zones separated at the north by a wedge of. Copper Queen ground and at the south by an undeveloped block of Calumet and Arizona ground about 2000 ft. (610 m.) wide. The more westerly zone includes the Irish Mag, Oliver, P. and D., and Cole mines, none of which have been operated since 1919. Much of the water from this division is carried from the 1400-ft., or bottom, level at the southern end of the Cole mine in a long water drift through the undeveloped block to the 1300-ft. level of the Briggs mine at the southern end of the more easterly zone.. Most of this water comes originally from outlying areas in the P. and D., mine, passing through parts of the lower levels of the Cole mine, which are heavily mineralized with iron and copper sulfides. This sulfide zone has been opened up and slowly oxidizing for years. Originally a pure, potable water, the analyses of which are shown under A in Tables 1 and 2, on its way through the mineralized area in the Cole mine it gathers copper, calcium, magnesium, iron, and aluminum sulfates, a load of dissolved mineral salts almost four times as great as that which it formerly carried; analyses B

DEVELOPMENTS in engineering during the past decade, particularly as applied to marine construction, mining machinery and other purposes in which corrosion offers a serious problem, have created a large demand for a non-ferrous metal highly resistant to corrosion and at the same time useful in general construction work as a substitute for steel without materially decreasing the factor of safety or increasing the weight of the various parts over that ordinarily used in the case of mild steel. To obtain the combination of desired properties many compositions have been proposed and used with excellent success, but at the present time probably the most popular and most widely used combination is the non-ferrous alloy commonly called manganese bronze. This is nothing more than a high brass to which have been added, by the proper method of alloying, comparatively small percentages of aluminum, iron, or manganese with the definite purpose in view of strengthening the alloy and rendering it more dense and close-grained than the average yellow-brass casting. In the manufacture of manganese bronze a great deal has been said about the importance of using only the highest grades of raw material and the beneficial or detrimental effects, as the case may be, of various impurities, as well as the importance of adding the ingredients according to various formulas proposed; but in most of these cases the literature on the subject has dealt principally with the manufacture of this alloy from virgin metals And raw materials of the highest purity. It is the purpose of this paper to deal particularly with the possibilities that lie in the proper development of methods for manufacturing such an alloy by more economical methods than those which have usually been discussed in other literature on the subject. THE existence of mechanical anisotropy in hexagonal metals is well known.' One possible method of measuring the degree of anisotropy in a metal is to make hardness measurements on the different planes of a single crystal. So far as is known, no single-crystal hardness data have been reported in the literature for alpha titanium. To obtain an estimate of the variation in hardness with crystallographic direction in titanium, Knoop hardness measurements were made on single crystals of electrorefined alpha titanium obtained from the Bureau of Mines, Boulder City, Nev. The hardness of arc-melted ingots prepared from this material was 64 Bhn (1000-kg load, 30 sec). Crystals of sufficient size were mounted in epoxy resin with the basal plane exposed. They were then polished and etched to remove excess plastic resin and work-hardened surface material. The crystals were then examined by x-ray diffraction, using the back-reflection Laue technique to insure that the crystals were properly oriented and strain free. After Knoop hardness readings (100 or 200-g load) were taken on the exposed surface, the crystals were remounted to expose a prismatic face and the foregoing procedure was repeated. Hardness values for various orientations are listed in Table I. The data show a difference between the hardness of the basal planes and that of the prismatic planes, as anticipated. More striking is the hardness difference observed between different orientations of the indentor on the prismatic planes as shown in Table I and Fig. 1. All of the indentations shown in Fig. 1 were made with a 100-g load. The long axis of indentation A is parallel to the unique (c) axis of the crystal. The deformation marks visible around indentations A and C of Fig. 1 are probably slip traces of the (10.0) system reported by Rosi, et al. At the beginning of the year 1935 the older fields in Southwest Texas, and particularly those discovered during 1934, had been practically delimited and only normal development continued. As a result, operations in this area were somewhat slowed down. Shortly after the first of the year, however, activity in the area was greatly accelerated, due largely to the fact that the Loma Novio field, discovered during the last few days of 1934, indicated the presence of a new productive trend east of and parallel to the Government Wells field and also indicated the presence of a new productive horizon, the Loma Novio sand, approximately 100 ft. lower than the Government Wells sand zone. Other discoveries during the year greatly augmented the activity in the district. During the year there were 651 oil wells, 53 gas wells and 275 dry holes drilled in this area during the year. Most of the operations were in the Government Wells, Cole, Loma Novio, Seven Sisters and Lopez fields. New Fields Four new fields were discovered during 1935 as follows: Seven Sisters and Piedra de Lumbre in Duval County; Loma Alto in McMullen County; and Lopez in Webb County. Seven Sisters Field.—The Seven Sisters field, opened in May, was the direct result of a systematic search for new productive areas northeast of the Loma Novio field. The first producer, Harvey & Henderson NO. 1 Chernosky, survey 226, was completed in the Labbe (Chernosky) sand at 2220 ft. However, the second producer, Santa Clara Oil Co. No. 1 Welder in survey 385, drilled about one mile south of the discovery well, failed to find production in the Labbé sand and was carried on down and completed in the Government Wells sand at 2473 ft. with an initial production of 20 bbl. of oil per hour. These two discoveries, in the Labbé and Government Wells sand, started an active leasing and drilling campaign in this part of Duval County and drilling operations continued especially active throughout the remainder of the year.

THE analytical history of phosphorus in its relation to the metallurgy of iron is an interesting study, the progress of which runs parallel with the development of the greatest industry in the world. Without the means of finding out how much phosphorus crude pigiron contained, the Bessemer steel process would have been impossible. To do this was originally tedious and slow work. On the other hand, the " direct" process of to-day, as well as the various special processes for steel or iron, have demanded the utmost rapidity in the operations of analytical chemistry. In general, any rapid process for the conversion of unrefined metal into a product of standard composition depends upon the rapidity of some accurate means employed to control it. Moreover, in our modern practice, it is not improbable that the differences in physical properties among the various makes of iron or steel are affected, if not produced, by the use of different methods of analysis. Recourse is always had for correction to the ((standard methods," but I incline to think that these methods are susceptible to error. It is very certain that the system of duplicates would not be resorted to, if the fact were otherwise. Even when duplicated, under the most careful and skilful manipulation, these standard methods produce disagreements. In proof of statements like these, which may sound. heretical, I hope, further on, to cite some evidence worthy of attention. I do not now mean to lay claim to the distinction of discovering the ultimate corrective. That result will come, no doubt, in. time, as the product of the experience of many workers. In the case of phosphorus, as of the other ingredients of iron or steel, a great deal has been done to accommodate the methods of analysis in rogue to the growing necessity for more rapid procedures: Much of this work has concerned what might be called the incidents of method. THE first method of working coal mines in the middle western states, more particularly in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri, was by means of the so-called single-entry method. In this method a single main passageway, or entry, was driven in the coal seam. with no parallel passageways, and from this pas-sageway or entry there were turned at intervals sim-ilar cross-passageways or entries, and from these cross-passageways, if the coal seam worked lay fairly horizontal, rooms were turned right and left. These crude methods of working were followed when the com-panies opening the mines were small and of very limited capital, and when the demand for coal was small and irregular. The principal desire was to produce coal in the short-est possible time and at the cheapest price. The chief evil resulting from such method of working was de-fective ventilation, although there were other serious drawbacks. There were then few or no good mining laws and no restrictions on those operating the coal mines. The hours of labor were long, the wages low, and the miners accordingly worked hard. All the coal was either sheared or undercut with a pick by hand. Very little solid shooting and no machine mining was done. What little air entered the mine, openings was introduced through the entries or. headings and thence conducted through the rooms by means of curtains; in many cases, as the workings became more exten-sive, the number of curtains added so materially to the mine resistance that ventilation was extremely in-efficient. Shots were fired by the miners at any time during the working shift and consequently there was more or less powder smoke or fumes in the mine work-ings all day long. Moreover, the working days were much longer than at present. The fine, dry coal-dust falling from the miners' picks while they were shear-ing or undercutting the coal filled the mine atmosphere and was taken into the lungs of the mine employees.

The Cuajone Concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corp. is located approximately 900 km southeast of Lima, Peru, near the 500 year old town of Moquegua, in an area that has been occupied since antiquity since the plant was started in July, 1976, the throughput has steadily increased from 36 to 46 kt/d (50,7055tpd). The widely distributed molybdenite content of the ore body ranges from 0.02-0.4% MoS2. The molybdenite content of the copper concentrate has always been sufficient to justify operation of a byproduct molybdenite plant. During the first nine months of 1980, the average grade of the ore was 1.169% copper and 0.026% molybdenite. Pilot plant testing conducted during 1970 at Toquepala, Cuajone's sister plant, determined that the recovery of the molybdenite into a salable concentrate could be accomplished relatively easily by using the Asmol process. Experience gained at Toquepala, which converted to Asmol in 1969, confirmed the simplicity of process. Simplicity of operation was one of the major criteria for the process selection because, at the time, it was expected that the molybdenite plant would start up concurrently with the copper concentrator. Other processes studied either produced inferior results or were judged more difficult to operate. However, geological information indicated that the molybdenite content of the ore would be relatively low for the first couple of years of operation, so the design and construction of the plant was delayed until after the copper plant was in production. Asmol remained the process selection. During 1976 and 1977, the flowsheet and plant layout based on pilot plant data, new results obtained from Cuajone's metallurgical laboratory, and process improvements from Toquepala's experience were completed. One of the more important innovations from the Cuajone laboratory was that the Asmol consumption could be substantially reduced by replacing air with nitrogen gas in the rougher and first cleaner flotation steps

It is desired in these notes to record a vein-phenomenon certainly unique in the writer's limited experience, and, as it seems to him, sufficiently rare to be worthy of mention. In the little mining camp of Forbestown, situated in the Sierra Nevada of California, it was announced one day, when the miners of the Cold Banks mine came off shift, that "washed gravel" had been struck on the 265-foot level. To those acquainted with that section and the character of the mine (a gold-bearing quartz-vein) this was a somewhat startling announcement; for, prolific as the State is, we are not in the habit of mixing up promiscuously our vein- and placer-deposits. However, the statement proved to have some foundation. The mine is located at an altitude of about 2700 feet, on the brink of one of the great canyons of erosion characteristic of the drainage of this range. A lateral ravine cuts the vein at right angles, thus making its general strike approximately parallel to the canyon at this point, and with a variable dip of from 20 to 40 degrees towards the canyon. The strong, well-defined vein, often 20 feet wide and more, presents nothing to distinguish it particularly from scores of others in the State, unless if be considered peculiar in the highly crystalline character of its quartz and the nature of the enclosing country-rock, which is metamorphic in the extreme, very hard, devoid of lamination, and in bedding so obscure that it might easily pass—at least on superficial examination—for one of the basic eruptives. Near by in the district can be found a series of slates common to the gold-belt of this range, and within the limit of the company's property is an intrusion of an acid eruptive. On an adjoining claim a granite shows itself. The mine is opened through an inclined shaft sunk on the vein. The ore carries both free gold and sulphurets, the greater part of its value

I will endeavor to describe the methods of silver-mining and smelting employed by the natives in Mongolia. Modern methods have been applied there, but with little success; and, since they are familiar to most members of the Institute, I will simply mention that the failure was due to the high price of coke used in smelting the ore in modern furnaces, and to the unsuitable mill-machinery employed for concentrating the galena, which is finely distributed in the ore. The Jehol silver-mines are situated about 45 miles NE. of Jehol, the capital of Mongolia. They embrace two mines, 5 miles apart,—the Ku Shan Tze mine and the Yen Tung Shan mine. They were first worked by natives 50 years ago, about the time when mining was so flourishing in other parts of the world,—for instance, in California and Australia. The upper part of the vein is galena mixed with iron-stone, and is 2 to 4 ft. thick. At lower levels the vein is composed of silver-lead ore running between quartz-porphyry walls. Limestone, talc and black shale, colored by graphite, are found in other parts of the mine. Crystalline limestone is found 1 mile NE. of Ku Shan Tze. Granite is encountered in the Yen Tung Shan mine. Mining.—The native method of working the mines is most primitive. The same method may have been employed a thousand years ago. A small inclined shaft, 4 ft. by 4 ft., is sunk in the vein-stuff where the appearances are most favorable. Another shaft is sunk 20 or 30 yds. away, for ventilation. The shaft follows the vein in a zigzag fashion in whatever direction the vein appears to be richest. Timber is used only in soft ground. Where the ground is hard, the roof is cut into an arch-form. In some places, instead of using ladders, steps are cut in the rock, just wide enough to hold one foot. The deepest native workings are 400 ft. below the

The Anthracite Division, Bureau of Distribution, of the United atates Fuel Administration, came into existence about Oct. 20, 1917. There had been no definite policy determined upon and the distribution had been carried out by the producers and distributors of this fuel as under normal conditions. The domestic sizes had been shipped from the beginning of the coal year on Apr. 1 in about their usual proportions to the various sections of the anthracite consuming territory of this country, which, in a general way, extended as far west as Nebraska and Montana, and in the south along the Atlantic seaboard to Florida. With the advent of cold weather, about the middle of November, acute shortages commenced to develop all over the northeastern section of the country, due to largely increased demand by the public in general, to enormously increased population in centers where industrial war activity was concentrated, and by the needs of the war industries themselves. Commencing with the early part of December, this demand was aggravated by extreme low temperatures and heavy snow; and the production decreased for the same reasons. From that date until the change in the weather, about the latter part of February, it was simply a question of getting coal into communities as emergencies occurred, to take care of individual cases. No definite plan of distribution could be followed. The coal mined between Apr. 1 and Nov. 1 had been distributed as mined and therefore only current production was available for distribution. The Anthracite Division, during this period, consisted of a Director, two assistants, together with an office force .of seven or eight clerks and stenographers. The trying experiences of the winter of 1917-18 had, however, shown a ready willingness on the part of the anthracite operators and distributors to cooperate in every way with the United States Fuel Administration. Wetherstones gold deposit is located just east of the township of Lawrence, in the Otago District of the South Island, New Zealand. The paper will describe aspects of the mining and exploration history of the Wetherstones gold field, current knowledge of the geology of the deposit, and speculate on possible outcomes of exploration in the modern era.   As at the famed Gabriels Gully situated nearby, most of the Wetherstones gold is/was contained in, or recycled into modern drainages from, the Blue Spur Conglomerate (æBSCÆ). The BSC is the basal member of a wedge of auriferous non-marine sediments of latest Cretaceous age which are tilted against the Tuapeka Fault Zone, a structure of regional dimensions. In particular mineralisation of elevated grade (which cannot yet be reliably estimated) appears to be concentrated in an elongate basement depression (ægutterÆ) of width around 100 m, variable thickness to a few metres, and axial length in excess of 500 m. The gutter plunges from the base of alluvial mining (where it has been partly exploited by underground methods) to depths of more than 100 m, beyond which it remains open and untested.   The prospects for a revival of mining at Wetherstones depend upon confirmation of what is here inferred to exist, and the discovery of additional gold. The economic prospects of the project however are enhanced by what is known or indicated of the geographic location, and anticipated geologic, mining and metallurgical characteristics of the mineralisation, and consequent anticipated environmental management issues.   The recognition of gold contained in pyrite in the BSC represents an upside to project economics which has never previously been evaluated. The Wetherstones Basin covers more than five square kilometres in areal extent. There is no modern exploration record of the majority of this area, leaving open the prospect of the discovery of additional gutters, and primary mineralisation in the underlying schist.   Australasia Gold Ltd has embarked on a program to reassess the potential resources of the Wetherstones gold mineralisation, and to evaluate the feasibility of mining.

THE composition of steel and the theory of its heat treatment have been so ably discussed elsewhere that it is unnecessary to go into the subject here. The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the method of treating drill steel at the Copper Range mines, giving some of the troubles encountered and the manner in which they were overcome or corrected. To study the matter properly, it was necessary to devise a system of records that would show the actual underground performance of the drills. To illustrate this system, the records of the Champion mine are used, as it is at this mine that most of the work along these lines has been done. Reports from each drill machine are made daily by the shop and mine, and tables compiled from these reports show the footage drilled, steel broken, drills received and sent out at the shop, drills sharpened, and bits cut off. These data show what each machine or party is doing and whether the miners' supply of drills is kept up to date. There have been times when the supply of drills has been short and time lost by the miner in looking for drills. The daily records show the number and condition of drills on hand at all times. Under the old method of sharpening, the drills were heated in a coke furnace, the proper degree of heat being judged by color. Then they were sharpened in a word drill-sharpening machine, reheated in a second coke furnace where the proper heat was again determined by color, and quenched in water. While this method was fairly successful in the hands of a careful workman and for the solid steel used in the old piston drill machine, the introduction of the faster water machine, using hollow steel, produced changes both underground and in the shop. Much more was expected of the hollow-steel and' hammer-type machine, with its improved method of rotation, but troubles due to breakage, burnt bits, uneven tempering, etc., at once began to appear.

A RESUME. of some important points regarding the life of drill steel, which have so far been learned from investigations carried out in the SKF Hofors' mines, Sweden, by L. Nordenfelt, is given below. By examining all fatigue breakages which occurred in the test it has bees conclusively proved that when a rock drill of the self-rotating type is used all break-ages of this kind start from the surface of the hole in the steel. It has further been proved that the rough hole surfaces (i.e., the marks left by the indentations of the sand core), are the starting points for the fatigue cracks and that the corrosive action of the water has .a very detrimental influence on the life of the steel. It is now a well known fact that this corrosive action concentrates at the bottom of the indentations left by the sand. The corrosive action of water has been well described by U. R. Evans in his paper, "Some Recent Work on the Corrosion of Metals," delivered on March 31, 1926, before the Liverpool Engineering Society, which is quoted in part below: "It is well known that, under ordinary conditions, most metals do not corrode in water unless dissolved oxygen is present. The strange feature of corrosion in submerged metals, however, is that the attack does not proceed mainly over those portions of the surface which could be reached readily by oxygen; deterioration takes place at certain points which are relatively, inaccessible to oxygen. When. a metal becomes pitted by corrosion, further attack usually deepens the pits, and in many cases it could be proved that there was no free oxygen at the bottom of the pits. None of the older theories of corrosion explain the fact that, although oxygen is necessary for rapid corrosion to take place, the attack actually occurs at the very points which could not be reached directly by oxygen.

The suppression of the austenite-martensite transformation that can be brought about by the addition of certain alloying elements, such as manganese or nickel, to plain carbon steel has been known for a long time, especially since Guillet's investigation at the beginning of this century. The extent to which the critical range is lowered depends upon the percentage and nature of the special element added. First the Arl point is lowered gradually, then at a certain percentage a sudden lowering to about 300" C. occurs. The addition of still larger percentages of the alloy may result in lowering the Ar, point to room temperature or below, in which case the steel remains austenitic at room temperature, especially after rapid cooling. The effect of alloying elements of this general type on the lowering of the transformation temperature is well illustrated by Sauveur(lJ$ in his Fig. 281a, reproduced here as Fig. 1. This type of curve is characteristic of both manganese and nickel though it requires about 21/2 times as much nickel as of manganese to produce the same result. The influence of nickel in retarding the transformation of austenite into the lower transition constituents is due to its lowering of the critical range of the steel, which is also well illustrated by Sauveur'l) (after Osmond) in his Fig. 284, reproduced here as Fig. 2. Scott('" presents a diagram illustrating the effect of manganese on the Ac3 and Ara points which is strikingly similar to the diagram above referred to in Fig. 2 concerning the effect of nickel. Lowering the critical range has the effect of increasing the viscosity, or, rigidity, of the alloy at the time when it is undergoing its transformation, which greatly slows down the transformation reaction velocity, and this, in turn, makes it easier to suppress, wholly or in part, the transformational changes. The composition of steel and the theory of its heat treatment have been so ably discussed elsewhere that it is unnecessary to go into the subject here. The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the method of treating drill steel at the Copper Range mines, giving some of the troubles encountered and the manner in which they were overcome or corrected. To study the matter properly, it was necessary to devise a system of records that would show the actual underground performance of the drills. To illustrate this system, the records of the Champion mine are used, as it is at this mine that most of the work along these lines has been done. Reports from each drill machine are made daily by the shop and mine, and tables compiled from these reports show the footage drilled, steel broken, drills received and sent out at the shop, drills sharpened, and bits cut off. These data show what each machine or party is doing and whether the miners' supply of drills is kept up to date. There have been times when the supply of drills has been short and time lost by the miner in looking for drills. The daily records show the number and condition of drills on hand at all times. Under the old method of sharpening, the drills were heated in a coke furnace, the proper degree of heat being judged by color. Then they were sharpened in a machine, reheated in a second coke furnace where the proper heat was again determined by color, and quenched in water. While this method was fairly successful in the hands of a careful workman and for the solid steel used in the old piston drill machine, the introduction of the faster water machine, using hollow steel, produced changes both underground and in the shop. Much more was expected of the hollow-steel and hammer-type machine, with its improved method of rotation, but troubles due to breakage, burnt bits, uneven tempering, etc., at once appeared.

THE EXISTENCE of petroleum in the rocks of Ohio and Indiana seems to have been first shown by wells dug for salt. The fuel, however, was objectionable owing to its odor and inflammability. Not until the brake well was drilled in 1859 did the people appreciate the value of rock oil, and then they at once began plans to secure the coveted fuel.. The first successful well in these two states was near . Macksburg, in southeast .Ohio, where at a depth of 59 ft. (17 m.) :oil was found in commercial quantity (1860). A year later this fuel was secured on Cow Run, in the same county, and at about the same time in Noble, Morgan and perhaps other counties in that part of Ohio. The second great step in the production of oil in Ohio and Indiana was taken in 1884 when the reservoir of natural gas in the Trenton limestone of northwest Ohio was tapped, and where a year later oil was secured in the same formation. Petroleum in this limestone was obtained in Indiana in 1889.1 The third step in the production of oil' in Ohio and Indiana is associated with the Clinton sand of Ohio. Natural gas in large volume was discovered in that rock at Lancaster, in 1887, and the area has been extended until it has become the largest individual producer in the world. The presence of natural gas in such great volume all but demonstrated to the driller that-oil lay hidden near by. Soon the search for it was started but not until 1899 was petroleum in commercial quantity found in the Clinton sand, and a large pool was not located in it until 1907. The fourth step in the development of the industry was taken in 1913, when the pool in Sullivan County, in western Indiana, was opened. The producing rock is the Huron sandstone, which is the topmost member of the Mississippian system.2

Densities and distributions of dislocations in plastically bent germanium crystals before and after annealing were studied. In the bent and annealed crystals, the theoretical relationship between radius of curvature and density of dislocations is confirmed. Before annealing, however, more dislocations are present than required, and these are distributed with a minimum at the neutral axis and maxima at the top and bottom surfaces. On annealing, three significant changes occur in the bent bars: 1) the average dislocation density is reduced, presumably by the annihilation of opposite signs; 2) dislocations migrate from the high density outside regions toward the low density neutral axis, thus producing the equilibrium distribution of dislocations; and 3) a polygonized structure is formed by movement of the dislocations into walls normal to the slip plane. ETCHING to reveal edge dislocations'-" offers a unique opportunity to study, in germanium single crystals, the functioning of dislocations in plastic deformation. Plastic bending is ideally suited to this purpose because it produces a static array of edge dislocations in an ideally plastic material which is predictable from the theory." " Nye" has given a rather complete treatment of the geometry of bent crystals in terms of dislocations. The density of excess dislocations is related to the radius of curvature of the slip plane of a bent crystal, as shown in Fig. 1, assuming the absence of macroscopic elastic stresses. The curvature of any plane in the zone of the bend axis is found by resolving the Burgers vector into that plane, so that for the usual case where the slip plane is inclined at some angle 0 to the neutral plane of the bar, the equation applies, with T equal to the radius of curvature of the neutral plane of the bent crystal. Two predictions which are relevant to this study may be made from Eq. 1. First, in crystals bent to various radii, the average excess dislocation density is inversely proportional to the radius and second, for a bar bent to a radius which is large compared with its thick-
