The Ranger uranium mine has operated in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory since 1979. The mine's water management system was designed to cater for the wet-dry monsoonal climate and to satisfy the recommendations of the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry - Second Report, 1977 (The Fox Report) with respect to environment protection. The Fox Report advised that the aquatic ecosystem of the region must be protected and that the mine should collect all runoff from disturbed areas. Furthermore, the mine was to operate as a no-release system until release standards, based on the experience of several years of operation and on the results obtained from monitoring and scientific investigations, could be established. Monitoring and research data have now been collected for a decade. it is evident that lower-than-expected concentrations of chemical constituents are present in the runoff waters which are retained on site. Standards have been established for the release of these waters to the streams when in flood during the wet season. Mine water quality data and release standards are presented. It can be confidently concluded that controlled release will not cause detriment to the aquatic ecosystems of the Kakadu region. The Ranger operation has demonstrated that environmentally responsible management of mine waters is feasible for future mining ventures in the Kakadu region.

DURING the latter part of the year 1932, the Servico Geologico e Mineralogico do Brasil ordered four magnetic field balances with tem-perature-compensated magnetic systems and a photographic recording apparatus for the registration of the diurnal variation. These instru-ments were delivered during the early part of the year 1933 and a short time later were taken to Santa Catherina for use in the field. Before the field work was begun, a series of experiments was carried out to determine the behavior of these new instruments under existing field conditions. The recording instruments were mounted in an under-ground chamber and their sensitivities checked by means of a Helmholtz coil. The field instruments were then mounted at fixed stations and readings were taken to determine the diurnal variation and compare it with the photographic records. The data obtained with the horizontal field balances were concordant but that obtained with the vertical component instruments showed a considerable divergence. This divergence was of such a magnitude that it was necessary to spend considerable time in determining its cause and finding a means of improving the functioning of the instruments. This paper presents the results of our observations on these systems and the conclusions at which we arrived; also the means we took to partly elimi-nate the difficulty until new systems could be ordered from Germany.

EXPERIMENTS performed in this laboratory on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures through unconsolidated sands have been described and discussed in an earlier paper.4 In these earlier experiments a definite relationship was found between the liquid saturation of a sand and its permeability to the liquid or gas phase. Furthermore, the nature of the sand, the permeabilities of the sands over a range between 17 and 260 darcies, appeared to have a negligible effect upon the saturation-permeability relation. Likewise experiments indicated that the viscosity of the liquid, or the substitution of an immiscible liquid for the gas phase, had only a very slight effect on the permeability-saturation relation. This con-clusion has since been definitely confirmed by the experiments of M. C. Leverett3 on the flow of oil and water through unconsolidated sands. The sands used by Leverett were of very low permeability (between 6.8 and 1.04 darcies), while the oil-water viscosity ratio varied between 90 and 0.057. Since the sands that constitute petroleum reservoirs are largely con-solidated, although of widely varying degrees of consolidation, it was desirable to extend the experiments on gas-liquid mixtures to consolidated sand. In the study of consolidated sands additional variables are involved, but for the initial experiments the only new variable to be intro-duced was the cementing material.

All aspects of precious metals processing were featured at a symposium held Oct. 3-6, 2007, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. Although billed as "Precious Metals Processing: Advances in Primary and Secondary Operations," the symposium also looked at economic, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the precious metals industry. The symposium was sponsored by SME; The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS); and the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI). It included workshops, technical presentations, guest speakers and social activities. Mining industry management, process engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, metals marketers, academics and others involved in the precious metals industry attended the conference. Needless to say, with gold nearing $25.721g ($800/oz) and platinum pushing $41.801g ($1,300/oz) at the time of the meeting, the mood among the attendees could not have been more positive. The symposium was privileged to have Father Ernest S. Sweeney, professor of Latin American History at Loyola Marymount University, as a guest speaker. Sweeney, a Jesuit priest, provided a colorful account of the history of mining in Arizona and the surrounding region of North America (Fig. 1). He described the importance of the mining industry and said, "To go down into the bowels of the earth to extract its riches for the benefit of all of us is an awesome task deserving our sincere respect and gratitude." However, he warned the industry that: "The ever increasing de¬mands on the mining community for the protection of the environment calls for endless efforts to maintain ethical standards in a business filled with risk, uncertainty and frustrations." Sweeney noted that the Spanish conquest of the Americas was driven by the three fundamental motives of "God, glory and gold." He noted that gold was the basic, most powerful driving force of the conquest and occupation of the Spanish empire. The first European to explore Arizona was the Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza. He came to Arizona in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola. Sweeny noted that Spanish explorers were consumed, as Cortes himself described it, "with a burning fever that only gold could cure." Sweeney told the story of some of these early explorers, including Francisco Vázquez de Coronado who "mounted an expedition in pursuit of gold and rich empires to conquer." Coronado passed through Arizona and discovered the Grand Canyon. "Coronado returned to Mexico exhausted, bankrupt and disillusioned, but with a wealth of new knowledge of the borderlands of the Spanish empire," said Sweeney. He then described the colorful history of early gold, silver and copper exploration and mining in Arizona, including the famous tale of the Lost Dutchman's Mine. Reduce longwall equipment transfer time between panels by utilizing a predriven recovery room, and thus eliminate the premove preparation associated with most equipment recovery methods. Background and Approach The recovery point for a retreating longwall is a predetermined position near the end of the panel where mining is terminated and equipment is disassembled and removed. However, to prepare for equipment removal at the recovery point, bolting and wire meshing arc required before the recovery point is reached. Usually, preparations for equipment recovery begin about 35 ft from the recovery point, significantly impeding the normal rate of advance of the longwall and, consequently, production. Recently, BethEnergy Mines, Inc., and the Bureau of Mines cooperated to evaluate the applicability of utilizing predriven recovery rooms to improve longwall equipment recovery. A predriven recovery room is an entry driven parallel to the longwall face at the end of the panel, having standard dimensions (for that particular mine) and supported with bolts, wire mesh, and supplemental support. The preparation of this entry is completed before it experiences mining-induced effects from the approaching longwall face. This enables the face to continue to mine at its normal rate of advance until the panel is completed. The supplemental support is required to control the loads imposed by the front abutment and is the most vital component of the recovery room.

This is the second of a series of reports on a survey of petroleum products manufactured on the Pacific Coast from California crude oils. California crudes differ in many characteristics from the petroleum produced in other parts of the United States, and the claim has been made that some of the present federal Specifications for petroleum products tend to discriminate against California products. The purposes of the present survey are to determine what particular specification requirements California petroleum products characteristically fail to meet, how widely the products deviate from these requirements, and if possible to show whether the fault lies with the specifications or the products, or along what 'lines investigation to determine the question should proceed. The first report* of the series gave the physical and chemical properties of gasoline and mineral spirits made from California crudes. The present report deals with lubricating oils. Sixty-one samples of lubricating stocks and finished commercial products were generously donated by four of the large refining companies of California. Fifteen samples of automobile lubricating oils, made in California from California crudes, were purchased in the open market. Nine samples of lubricating oils mode from Gulf Coast crude were contributed for comparison by a company in Texas. The refining companies have continued the helpful and cordial cooperation shown by them in connection with the earlier work of the survey.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from a high-extraction retreat room-and-pillar operation in southern Illinois. The objective of this monitoring program is to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a structure during a subsidence event. Data from such a study should enhance the understanding of the mechanisms that produce structural damage and aid in the design of structures that resist such damage. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tiltmeter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations caused by the mining subsidence sequence is demonstrated. Using data from this tiltmeter, the development of curvature in the foundations as they conformed to the displaced ground surface is shown. This curvature is rep- resented by differences in tilt at various points on the foundations, indicating a change in tilt over a horizontal distance. Also, even though subsidence damage has not been fully analyzed, preliminary observations of the cracks that formed in the foundations are reported. These cracks resulted in the separation of one footing into distinct pieces; therefore, their effect on the tilt readings is cited.

When metals are subjected to mechanical working, such as rolling, one of the phenomena that take place is a movement of the crystals of the metal into a system or systems of orientation which bear an angular relation to the direction of working. In rolled metal the crystals may orient themselves with respect to the rolling plane or the rolling direction, or both. Direct evidence of the existence of preferred orientations in rolled metal has been obtained by numerous investigators from X-ray patterns of the rolled metal. Most of these workers used a monochromatic pinhole method. Where the degree of preference for a single orientation is high the monochromatic pinhole pattern may be interpreted by a geometrical calculation based on the angular relationships of the planes in the crystal and the diffraction arcs on the X-ray pattern. This process may be aided by the geometrical construction of the locus sphere (Lagenkugel), and reflection circles of Polanyi,l Polanyi and Weissenberg,2 and Mark and Weissenberg,3 and of the plane polar figures (flachenpolfigur) of Franz Wever.4 R. M. Bozorth5 solves X-ray patterns from metals having a single preferred orientation by means of a series of charts which when placed over the X-ray pattern give directly certain angular relationships, between the crystal planes and the surface of the specimen.

It is a general expectancy that in most of the construction and renovation project, the contractor is going to hand over the as-built documents to the owner or the facility management team at the completion of the project. The main challenge for the handover process is to ensure the completeness of the captured building information and the accuracy of it in terms of how well it represents the reality. Building information models (BIMs) can be used as an information repository to store and deliver as-built information. However, due to changes made in the construction and renovation phases and errors made in the design and modeling phases, discrepancies can exist between BIMs created in the design phase (asdesigned BIMs) and actual building conditions. Laser scanning technology is able to efficiently capture accurate geometric information, which provides an opportunity to identify and quantify discrepancies and update as-designed BIMs into as-built BIMs. This paper presents a case study, within which the asdesigned BIM of a newly renovated research lab was updated into an as-built BIM using laser scanned data captured in the renovation phase. This paper introduces the challenges associated with the updating process for the as-designed BIM. In order to address these challenges, this paper introduces a framework that supports the update of an as-designed BIM by incorporating point clouds captured by the progressive laser scans.

Rockbolting and dowelling are important methods of ground control. Their effectiveness depends upon the compatibility of the support members and the geotechnical behaviour of the rock mass. Detailed geotechnical investigations are, therefore, necessary for the design of effective rockbolting systems. The study described in the paper was concerned with improving the effectiveness of ground control at Mount Isa Mine. The paper briefly reviews the design methods avail- able when choosing a rockbolting system with a view to identifying the most suitable method. Joint surveys were used for the geotechnical assessment of rock mass stability. These were interpreted with the aid of the stereographic technique of predicting the size and shape of potentially unstable blocks of rock in both the roof and side walls of excavations. The geology and ground conditions at Mount Isa are briefly described together with the current ground control techniques. The requirements for ground control have been investigated at representative sites by analysing typical modes of rock failure and using a geological predictive technique. An application of this technique to the selection of a support system in a shallow Coal Measures tunnel is also described. The paper concludes with a general discussion on the effectiveness of this method of site investigation for the appraisal of rockbolting support in mining and civil engineering excavations.

The need for a better understanding of the effect of fluid pressure on the strength of intact and jointed rock has long been recognized. The behavior of pore fluid pressure was first pointed out by Terzaghi 1 who suggested the application of the effective stress concept to rock and concrete. While the effective stress concept has been used for some time in the design of mass concrete dams, it only recently has been applied to rock. Robinson 2 and Handin et al.3 evaluated the effects of pore pressure on a variety of sedimentary rocks and demonstrated the validity of the concept. Work using pore fluids other than water has been done by Boozer, et al.4 who considered strain rate and temperature as additional variables. According to the effective stress theory, the effective stress, [a], is the difference between the total stress, [a], and the pore pressure, u, and is the controlling factor influencing frictional strength of rock, other parameters remaining constant. Assuming the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria applies, the shear strength, T, is given by the equation [r=d+ (a-u)tan ¢](1) where [~F], the angle of internal friction, and c, the cohesion intercept of "no load" shear strength, are the effective stress parameters.* Robinson,2 Handin,3 and others have demonstrated that moderately porous sand-

It has also appeared that the behavior of the zinc cell is the best and surest check on the correctness and thoroughness of the purification methods used, because it indicates the presence of both current impurities and cumulative impurities derived from the leaching of the ore; it also indicates whether these impurities are current or cumulative, at least in so far as they are of serious importance commercially.

In view of the proposed visit of the Institute to Cuba this winter, the following brief sketch of the principal mineral deposits near Santiago de Cuba has been prepared largely from notes taken in February, 1903, during a visit to the mines then in operation in the province of Santiago de Cuba. Westward from Cape Maysi, the most eastern point of the island, the coast is rocky and uninviting. The usual course of the steamers is well in toward the shore, and the lines of stratification of the rocks can be distinguished clearly, the presence of iron or other ores being indicated by frequent blotches of mineral stain. One is impressed with the general rugged character of the southeastern coast-line,—an almost unbroken barrier of coral-limestone bluff's, full of caves and hollows, into which the surf rushes with a roar and bursts into tall fountains of spray. Beyond rises abruptly the Sierra Maestra range, whose sharp, peaked crest-line betrays its eruptive or igneous origin. From a height of about 800 ft. near Cape Maysi, this range gradually rises to the westward, attaining its maximum elevation of more than 8,300 ft. in the Pico Turquino, beyond Santiago. Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) in the western Pacific have received much attention as resources for gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead (Lenoble, 2000). Since the end of the 1980s, SMS have been found in the back-arc basin and on oceanic island-arc areas. The typical representatives found are in the Okinawa Trough and on the Izu-Ogasawara Arc near Japan (Halbach et al., 1989; Iizasa et al., 1999), in the Lau Basin and the North Fiji Basin near Fiji (Fouquet et al., 1991; Bendel et al., 1993), and in the East Manus Basin near Papua New Guinea (PNG) (Kia and Lasark, 1999). The higher gold, silver, and copper contents in one of the areas increased the chance for profitable mining operation, which was considered by a private company (Malnic, 2001). The company gathered investment money and announced to start the commercial mining from 2010 (www.nautilusminerals.com). On the basis of geological information of the Sunrise Deposit of the Myojin Knoll on the Izu-Ogasawara Arc (Iizasa et al., 1999) and geotechnical characteristics of SMS (Yamazaki and Park, 2003), some preliminary economic validation analyses of the SMS mining in small production scale were reported by one of the authors (Yamazaki et al., 2003; Yamazaki and Park, 2005; Yamazaki, 2007). The results showed high profitability of the SMS mining.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system using a high-speed electropneumatic mechanism for the rapid (grab) sampling of dusts and gases during an explosion. The sampling system consists of an aluminum housing that incorporates two 30-cm3 preevacuated glass vials with rubber septums. Upon actuation, the sampling probe needle is driven through the septum with a pressurized air pulse, filling the tube with gas and dust from the mine explosion. After a predetermined time, the sampling probe needle is retracted by a second high-pressure air pulse to its normal (quiescent) state, allowing the sampling tube to reseal. The onset and the duration of sampling are independently variable and controlled by a time-delay relay package. This technique enables the monitoring of pyrolysis-charring in coal particles and the generation and combustion of the pyrolysis vapors in both large- and small- scale explosions. The following results were obtained from full-scale dust explosion tests at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory: (1) Gas sampling of the leading edge of the flame front shows the large concentration changes, characteristic of the flame front; (2) gas samples taken entirely in the flame zone consist of pyrolysis and combustion products with very low residual oxygen; and (3) the particles collected in the flame zone show signs of extensive pyrolysis and charring.

ONE of the most vital problems in the manufacture of steel at present is the occurrence of the defects that have been popularly termed "snow flakes," "flakes," or "scabs." Particularly is this the problem of many manufacturers who during the past 2 yr. have undertaken large-scale production for the first time. A study of the microstructure of such defective material throws considerable light upon the nature of these defects and is essential before measures may be taken for the elimination of the defects. Flakes do not appear to be found in the plain carbon steels; they have been found, however, in abundance in some of the simple alloy steels that are being used in such vast quantities; viz., nickel steel of the approximate composition, 0.40 carbon and 3.5 per cent. nickel, and in the chrome-nickel type. The present article summarizes the characteristic features of defective steel of the flaky type as they have been found by laboratory study of numerous specimens, and it aims to show the conditions within the metal that are favorable to the occurrence of this type of defect without entering into the details of mill practice (size of ingot, design of molds, rate of cooling, distribution of cooling stresses, etc.), all of which conditions appear to play a role in the production of these defects.

This paper provides a brief historical background to the approximately 12-year project that led to the revision of rope selection factors in the South African regulations, thus providing the ability to hoist economical payloads from single lift ultra-deep shafts. The efforts over the past 20 years have led to the revision of the legislation pertaining to rope selection factors, the redesign of rope constructions to meet the required duties associated with ultra-deep shafts, codes of practice for the design, operation and maintenance of winding plants, and a code of practice for the condition assessment of winder ropes. As a consequence the Moab Khotsong ultra-deep hoisting system could be developed and installed, with the assurance of predictable performance. Access to deep orebodies by means of single lift, ultra-deep shafts has a critical impact on the life cycle costs and efficiencies of ultra-deep mining complexes. A brief description of the main components of the hoisting system at Moab Khotsong is presented. An in-depth review of the development process applied to ensure a stable, safe and cost-effective rope construction for the ultra-deep Moab Khotsong shaft follows. The paper concludes with an overview of the experiences gained during the installation and commissioning phases of the winder, as well as operational and maintenance issues.

An important requirement in every geological quality control program is that the identity and grades of the control samples (duplicates, certified reference materials (CRMs), and blanks) must remain æblindÆ to the analytical laboratory. Once the entity to be controlled is aware of relevant details of the control process, such as the identity of the control samples, the objectivity may be lost and the control may no longer be completely valid. Whereas the blind insertion of field duplicates and coarse blanks can be easily conducted at site, simultaneously with the sampling process, the rest of the control samples should be inserted into the batches during or after sample preparation and prior to assaying, in order to ensure a proper assessment of precision, accuracy and assay contamination, independent of the internal quality control of the laboratory. Such a procedure raises the concern that blind insertion of crushed or pulverised material in sample batches prior to assaying could represent a breach in the chain of custody principle, as samples would have to be temporarily returned to the custody of a non-laboratory person in charge of the insertions. In this seemingly conflict scenario, what should we give up? Do we maintain the strict chain of custody, knowing that the laboratory will be aware of the identity of some of the control samples, or that some duplicates will not be true same-batch duplicates? Do we ignore chain of custody issues to maintain the anonymity of the control samples and insert blind same-batch duplicates, CRMs and blanks? Is it possible to do blind insertions without breaching the chain of custody? Current NI 43-101 and JORC requirements, as well as real-world QA/QC and sample security practices, are discussed in light of AMECÆs approach to the solution of this apparent dilemma.

THE RELATION between the course, or path, of the fracture of metals and alloys, produced in service or as a result of certain laboratory tests, and the crystalline units of which such materials are composed is of utmost importance. The fracture of normal material is, in general, intracrystalline, i.e., it consists of a break across the grains rather than of a separation between them. An intercrystalline fracture indicates either that the metal is of very inferior quality or that the break occurred under very unusual conditions, e.g., at a very high temperature. The usual mechanical tests, when applied to metals of the type that breaks with an intercrystalline fracture, merely measure the coherence of adjacent grains for one another and reveal little as to the real properties of the metal itself. Even such a soft plastic substance as lead, under suitable conditions, may be rendered so weak and brittle that the metal can be easily crumbled into powder by the fingers although the constituent grains have lost none of the intrinsic properties of lead. Various erroneous explanations of this behavior of lead have appeared in the scientific literature, the change being described usually as an allotropic one. The importance, in an industrial sense, of a proper explanation of this type of the corrosion of lead justifies the description of the type of metal deterioration that follows.
