Environmental and public concerns and the banned use of cyanide for the recovery of gold in some parts of the world have heightened the search for an alternative lixiviant to cyanide. Thiosulfate appears to be the most promising alternative to cyanide due to thiosulfate being non-toxic, relatively cheap compared to cyanide and generally gold recoveries are similar to those of cyanide. The most widely researched thiosulfate process is one where copper ions and ammonia are added to the solution. This paper reviews the leaching of gold in thiosulfate solutions and the contributions of the research at Monash University to the understanding of the gold oxidation reaction in thiosulfate solutions, the solution chemistry when copper ions, ammonia and oxygen are present, the influence of the changing solution chemistry on the gold leach kinetics, and the application of thiosulfate in the leaching of gold from ores. It is clearly shown that the gold oxidation rate is hindered in thiosulfate solutions. In the presence of copper ions the gold oxidation rate though is significantly enhanced and thus is why copper(II) is more effective than other oxidants in the thiosulfate leach system. The copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach solution chemistry is shown to be very complex, especially in the presence of oxygen as the rate of thiosulfate oxidation increases and the majority of the copper ions are not maintained in the copper(II) oxidation state. The thiosulfate oxidation rate must also be maintained low as an intermediate thiosulfate oxidation product hinders gold leaching. In optimising the recovery of gold from ores with copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach solutions it is important to evaluate and minimise any negative effect an ore may have on the leach solution chemistry and hence gold leaching.

In an earlier study1 in this laboratory, it was found that there is a minimum in the specific conductance of Ni-S melts in the region of the stoichiometric composition, Ni3S2. This and similar observations on other sulfide1 and telluride2 systems suggest that short-range order exists in the molten phase for several hundred degrees above the melting point, and a qualitative energy-band model has been proposed, with intrinsic semiconduction at the stoichiometric composition and degenerate electron and hole conduction at metal- and tellurium-rich compositions. This suggestion has been substantiated for the telluride systems by Seebeck coefficient measurements which showed a change in sign from negative on the metal-rich side to positive on the tellurium-rich side. In the present investigation, in order to substantiate still further the proposed model, Seebeck coefficient determinations have been extended to the Ni-S system over a composition range in the vicinity of Ni3S2. The experimental method was essentially the same as that used for the telluride systems, with minor modifications on cells for high sulfur melts to permit the use of tungsten wires and W— W-Re th~rmocouples instead of the chrome1 or alumel wires and chromel-alumel thermocouples originally used. Chrome1 and alumel both deteriorate very rapidly in atmospheres containing sulfur. The Ni-S alloys were prepared as described in the conductivity paper. Initially, a portion of the solidified melt was analyzed at the end of a run, but after this was found to be inaccurate because of segregation during cooling, the whole sample was analyzed. The nickel content, only, was determined, the sulfur content being obtained by difference. The results are summarized graphically in Fig. 1, and clearly show a change in the sign of the Seebeck coefficient in the region of the stoichiometric composition. This change of sign near Ni3S2, coupled with the minimum in the conductivity, is suggestive of an intrinsic semiconductor at the stoichiometric composition, with degenerate electron and hole conduction on either side of this composition, in keeping with the proposed model. The negative temperature coefficient of conductivity, normally indicative of metallic conduction, is not inconsistent with this model. In the completely degenerate region it would be expected, while in the vicinity of Ni3S2 the suggestion originally made by Argyriades, Derge, and pound3 for the Fe-S system can probably be applied. They proposed that the forbidden gap between the valence band and the conduction band is small, and that the increase in the number of the conducting species with increase in temperature is not large enough to compensate for the loss of mobility through thermal scattering. ENGINEERS have long pondered the answer to the question of "How am I doing?" and in large measure the answer from the economics angle is provided by the 1946 survey of the engineering profession now being published by the Engineers Joint Council as an eighty-page bulletin entitled "The Engineering Profession in Transition." The survey, based upon a completely precoded mail questionnaire, aimed at three major objectives: (1) to determine the general impact of World War II upon the profession in the period 1939 through 1946; (2) to obtain re- R liable data from which valid findings could be derived to predict how active the profession would be after 1946; and (3) to determine if the war's upheaval had changed materially the pattern of professional activities, education, background, and earnings from those which existed prior to 1939. In the present work, a critical assessment of the thermodynamic information available for the ternary system Ni-W-0 has been carried out; This was complemented by experimental measurements of the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the ternary compound NiWO, by solid state galvanic studies involving Zr02-CaO solid electrolyte. The assessed thermodynamic data, together with the phase diagram information available in literature, were employed to generate the ternary phase diagram for the system Ni-W-0 in the temperature range 1073-1273 K. The calculation of the phase diagram was carried out by computer optimization according to the "CALPHAD" method. The computed phase diagram has been confirmed at isothermal sections by identification of the phases present in samples equilibrated at defined temperatures.

The theory of elasticity, the science of the strength of materials, and all our calculations regarding engineering structures are based on Hooke's law, that in loaded bodies the deformations are proportional to the load producing them. Without this law it would be impossible to design intelligently engineering structures such as bridges, frames, axles, etc. This being the case, the proportional limit,l that is, the point at which deformation ceases to be proportional to load, is the most important factor in engineering design. Further, the working fiber stress should be fixed in reference to the proportional limit instead of, as is usual, in reference to the ultimate strength. The incorrect use of the ultimate strength instead of the proportional limit in setting the working fiber stress is probably due to two reasons: (1) it is a more delicate operation to measure the proportional limit; (2) it is usually assumed, though incorrectly, that the proportional limit is determined by the ultimate strength. In Germany the poin't at which permanent set first appears is often taken instead of the proportional limit. The two points will coincide if Gerstner's law, that elastic deformations are proportional to the loads producing them both before and after permanent set, is true; and the limit of proportionality and the elastic limit or point of permanent set will both be represented on a stress-strain diagram, by the point at which the line ceases to be a straight line and becomes curved or changes its inclination. It is to be further noted that the difference in definition between proportional limit and elastic limit introduces a difference in methods of determination in the testing laboratory. The German method of determining the elastic limit by alternately loading and unloading the test specimen is a lengthy process and time has in itself a very considerable influence on the results of physical tests.

"The intact rock constant, mi, is one of the three basic input parameters required for the widelyused Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Values for the constant should ideally be determined by statistical analysis of laboratory test data. In this paper the influence of the inclusion or exclusion of tensile test data on derived values is discussed. We firstly investigate the relationship between direct tensile strength (DTS) test values and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) test values based on a literature search, finding that the correlation between the two test types is DTS = 0.9*BTS, independent of the lithology being tested. Secondly, using the shear strength database of Douglas (2002), we examine the influence of confining pressure range and the inclusion or exclusion of DTS and BTS test values on calculated values of mi.Chief amongst the influences was the exclusion of tensile data in the calculation procedure, particularly when the Hoek triaxial confining stress range requirement (?3?max = 0.5?c) was not satisfied. Based on a reasonable 1:1 relationship between R (the ratio of unconfined compressive to tensile strength), use of actual tensile data in the calculations for the Hoek brown failure criterion is considered to be a simpler and more robust approach to the use of a tensile cutoff based on empirical criteria such as that of Fairhurst (1964). We advocate the fitting a failure curve using compressive and tensile test data as the most reliable means of calculating mi, while at the same time satisfying requirements as originally advocated by Hoek relating to the appropriate triaxial confining stress range (?3?max = 0.5?c) and sufficient (>5) evenlyspread data points. In the absence of triaxial data the use of R provides a practical means of obtaining estimates of mi that are more robust than guideline values."

The purpose of this work is to determine the equilibrium-state of the aqueous-solution which is produced by the leaching processes, including natural weathering of pyrite minerals. The latter can lead to acid-mine-drainage (AMD). The ferric iron species (Fe3+) resulting from bacteria-catalysed oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe2+), in the presence of water and air, is known to bring about steady-dissolution of minerals chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS2), and so forth. Good-aeration, relatively high-porosity and sufficient bacterial activity tend to promote leaching in waste-rock-dumps. The composition of the aqueous-phase that accumulates in the pore-space (or in open-pits) is of practical interest as it would strongly influence the leaching of both sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Since the reactions among the various ionic species occur relatively fast, the solution-phase may be regarded as approaching a state of virtual-equilibrium and it is possible to determine by computation the respective concentrations of the many dissolved species. For the Cu-Fe-H-O-S system, these species may include: H+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, HSO4-, SO42-, OH-, CuSO4o, H2O, Fe(OH)+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe2(OH)24+, Fe(SO4)+, Fe(HSO4)+, Fe(HSO4)2+, and Fe(SO4)2-. The aqueous-system which may be constituted from appropriate mole-quantities of H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, and CuSO4 is in fact the result of various natural processes (reactions) and due respect must be accorded to the extents of these reactions. The present model computes the equilibrium molalities of the foregoing ionic and neutral aqueous species, using the iterative equilibrium constant method that ensures strict-adherence to charge-balance and elemental molar-balance constraints. The dissolving sulfide-minerals (FeS2, CuFeS2) consume Fe2(SO4)3, H2O, and O2 and yield FeSO4, H2SO4, and CuSO4 while the aqueous-phase tends to become progressively acidic (declining pH) reflecting the gradual increase in the extents of sulfide-dissolution reactions. The equilibrium-state of the solution-phase is computed for specific set of values for the extents of respective reactions. The temperature and pressure of the system are 25¦ C (298.15 K) and 101.325 kPa (1.0 atm), respectively. The mica-like minerals such as the biotite [H2K(Mg,Fe)3Al(SiO4)3] tend to consume much of the H2SO4(aq), with the extracted K+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and Al3+ ionic species accumulating in the solution. The precipitation of the jarosites (potassium, hydronium, or ammonium) contributes to the removal of ferric and ferrous species from the solution-phase. In the present work, the emphasis is on predicting the compositions of the aqueous- and condensed-phases with advancing time or increasing æextent of reactionÆ. The results of such calculations are compared to published data on raw AMD (acid-mine-drainage).

THE practice of fine-grinding is now being so successfully - carried on in some fields, notably in West Australia, and its advisability has been so frequently pointed out' that the matter in this paper is not put forward as being new ; its chief object being to call attention to the importance of fine-grinding in the treatment of comparatively low-grade ores. I have been engaged during the last five years in the cyanide-treatment of ores in the Ohinemuri district (North Island), New Zealand, and I consider that, in the near future, extremely fine-grinding (almost sliming) will become a very important feature of the milling-methods in this field, since it seems absolutely necessary to reduce the most of ores to a very fine state of division if a high extraction is to be obtained; and, in most cases, the extra percentage of saving will leave a good margin above the increased cost of treatment due both to the fine-grinding and to the interest on the capital spent for the grinding-machinery. The average ore of the Ohinemuri field is composed of a quartz-gangue with some calcite, carrying the gold-value in the form of an alloy of gold and silver in about equal proportions, and the silver-value in the form of mixed sulphides of silver, usually associated with a considerable amount of iron pyrites. In the upper levels, the ores are decomposed and carry large quantities of black manganese oxide and some iron oxide, but, as. depth is reached, the decomposed ore gives place to sulphides and, in some mines, rhodonite, manganese silicate, is present in fairly large quantities. It is a public university with a 29,792 students in three campuses in the state. The main campus of the University of Sonora is located in the capital city of Hermosillo, which has a population of more than 609,829, in the state of Sonora in the northwestern region of Mexico [1].Despite the fact that in the University of Sonora there were, in the eighties, some projects dealing with environmental issues, there was not until 1992 that the sustainability efforts were really initiated. It happened when the Sustainable Development Group was created in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering as a response to the need for adapting the industrial engineering curricula to the challenge of sustainable development [2]. In order to promote sustainability, it has been necessary to cope and break with several university paradigms. For this reason, the strategy for becoming a sustainable university has continuously evolved throughout the years from a simple structure composed by individual and isolated projects to a systematic and integrative Sustainability Management System. Thanks to this evolution, the University of Sonora has won a respectable reputation in the greater community and it is seen in the region as an icon of sustainability promoter. In this sense, the substantives functions of education, research, and outreach and partnership, which are considered supportive and integrative, have also evolved to play a key role for the success of sustainability initiatives.The institution has followed four avenues for becoming a sustainable university; education, research, outreaching and partnership and greening the campus [3]."

With the construction of the Magdeburg zinc works, the Georg von Giesche's Erben Mining Co. of Breslau has to a certain extent completed the program of reconstruction which it set as its goal after the boundaries of Upper Silesia were drawn by the Treaty of Versailles. During its history, covering.more than two centuries, zinc and lead mining has been its chief activity. Through the new boundaries established, it lost to Poland all its mines and smelters, including five distillation smelters. Of its extensive properties, there remained only an apparently unimportant and unexplored portion of the old Bleischarley ore field which, however, happily made possible the resumption of its old business. In 1925 the Deutsch-Bleischarley shaft-only a few kilometers from the old Bleischarley shaft—was sunk and developed, and in May 1926 production of lead and zinc ore was resumed. As facilities for smelting were lacking, the ore was at first delivered to the neighboring smelters, which had now become Polish. Realization of the plan to build its own zinc works had to be postponed at first for lack of capital. In the meantime, however, plans for the new works were worked out in all details. After extensive experimentation in a semicommercial pilot plant it was decided, at the end of 1928 and the beginning of 1929, to use the electrolytic process and, for economic reasons, to place the works at Magdeburg. With zinc at the approximate price level that had ruled since the Deutsch-Bleischarley mine had begun working, it was hoped that the plan could be completed in 1930 with the company's own resources. However, falling metal prices, already noticeable in 1929, made this impossible, and further postponement for a time became necessary. A magnetic field has been used to damp out liquid convection during the solidification of castings. Ingots of Al-2 pct Cu were poured from various sperheats (10" to 65°C) into a room-temperature graphite mold located between the poles of an electromagnet. The effect on ingot structure of varying the strength and time of application of the magnetic field was investigated, and the results are interpreted in light 01- current theories of ingot structure. In the solidification of alloy systems, thermal gradients in the melt and differences in density of the constituents are expected to produce convective motion in the liquid. The thermal convection caused by temperature gradients should be present during the freezing of both alloys and pure materials, while the solute convection caused by density differences should be of concern only for alloys. The possible influence of this natural convection on the structure of castings has been discussed by Ruddle,' Chalmers, and Tiller. More recently, an experimental investigation of such effects was carried out by Cole and Bolling. These workers took stationary molds containing lead- and tin-based alloys and. using a brine solution. quenched them from various superheats above their respective liquidus temperatures. When grids were placed across the mold diameter to suppress convection, the grid region was later observed to contain a larger percentage of columnar grains than other parts of the casting or than similar castings poured without the grids present. From thermocouple measurements, they found the temperature in the grid region to be higher than that in the region outside the grids throughout the freezing process, and concluded that convection should be an important mode of heat transfer in normal castings. In addition to such convection arising from thermal gradients or differences in density of the constituents, a further source of convective motion, which we shall call "momentum convection", may be particularly important in small (laboratory-size) castings. By this term we refer to the convective motion produced in the initial pouring process, a motion which is damped out as the linear momentum and angular momentum of the liquid are dissipated. Besides these sources of convection, which are present to some extent in all castings. external influences may also be effective in producing convective motion. Examples of such "forced" convection which have been discussed in the literature include stirring the melt, shaking the mold, rotating the mold, and so forth The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of convection on the structure of castings poured into a cold mold. The occurrence of Enargite (Cu3AsS4) in hydrometallurgical plants bears a number of challenges. One question lies on how Copper and Arsenic can be selectively extracted from the solid surface structure when immersed in aqueous solution. The leaching of Enargite in ambient conditions has been extensively studied; nevertheless, challenges regarding the process kinetics and surface structures enabling the extraction process remain ill-understood. Prior knowledge indicates that different conditions of pH, Eh, temperature, speciation of the aqueous phase or variations of these parameters defines the overall rate at which metals and other elements will be transferred to the solution. One aspect that the research studies have seldom addressed involves studying the main features of the surface structures formed during the leaching process at the outmost surface atomic layer. Such structures will mediate between the solid bulk and the solution to undertake subsequent stages of leaching process. The aim of this research work is to critically analyze the state of the art of Enargite electrochemistry from the mediator formation-dissolution mechanisms standpoint occurring at the mineral-solution interface. The most probable mediator species reported in the literature were found to be: Arsenolite and Sulfur (acidic media), Covellite (acidic and alkaline media) and Tenorite (alkaline media). As a result of this analysis, it was observed that the surface speciation was not in full agreement with the previous knowledge suggested to explain Enargite leaching reactions and, therefore, modified Eh-pH diagrams are presented. The acquired insights on the surface structures rising from the Enargite-aqueous solution interactions is further revised to provide new experimental protocols towards selectively separating Copper and Arsenic through hydrometallurgical paths.

FROM the point of view of the metallographist, the adaptation of x-rays to the study of the crystal structure of metals is of the greatest importance. While one may hardly consider the findings resulting from x-ray study as revolutionary, their positive nature, compared with the deductions we have been forced to accept from the work that had gone before, gives firmer ground on which to build and furnishes new fields for speculation. Prior to the advent of the crystallogram, the best work on the crystal structure of steel was that of Osmond and Cartaud.1 They concluded, from their investigation with percussion figures formed at various temperatures, that alpha, beta, and gamma irons belonged to the cubic system and that they showed well-marked specific characteristics and could not have the same internal structure. What the internal structures were, they had no direct method of determining; but from a consideration. of the fact that the 001 plane (that parallel to the cube face) is a plane of perfect cleavage and minimum hardness in alpha iron and that the 111 (octahedral) plane is by far the most important in the crystallography of gamma iron, they were led to suggest the simple cubic arrangement as that of alpha and the face-centered cubic arrangement as that of gamma iron. They suggested the body-centered cubic arrangement as that of beta iron. The atomic arrangement of the various crystal forms of iron has been quite definitely determined in recent years by means of x-rays and the work of Westgren2 and Westgren and Phragmèn3 has been rather conclusive. They not only determined the atomic arrangement of alpha, beta, and gamma iron but also that of the high-temperature modification delta.

THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining. At the start of World War I1 the demand for iron ore to supply Woodward blast furnaces, and rapid exhaustion of the main source of Wood- ward ore, No. 3 Red Ore mine, necessitated speedy opening of the Pyne mine. The mine is three miles southwest of Bessemer and is responsible for 80 pct of Woodward ore, the rest coming from the Songo mine. The Woodward Iron Co. is one of the old producers of the Birmingham district. S. H. Woodward, an iron-master of Wheeling, overheard two Union soldiers conversing about ore and coal lands in Alabama, which lead to the acquisition of the first ore lands of the Woodward Co. in 1869. Development was not begun until after the death of S. H. Woodward; his two sons, W. H. Woodward and J. H. Woodward, formed the Woodward Iron Co. in 1881 and purchased a tract of land midway between the ore vein on the southeast and the coal field on the northeast about 12 miles southeast of Birmingham for the

IT seems to be in the nature of concepts that they have many meanings, and that the meaning best reflecting the primary interests of a person tends to be accepted by him as the normal meaning of the concept. The concept of ore reserves is no exception, for there is no unanimity of meaning among the several groups of us who are interested in ore reserves, nor even among the individuals of a single group. The groups most interested in ore reserves would seem to include at least the mining industry, perhaps State taxing agencies, and the Federal Government in all its diversified activities, and I would include also the citizenry at large or at least that part of it that consciously thinks about problems-of national welfare. To each of these, and to different individuals within them, the term reserves represents something different, and the farther away the individual or group gets from physical contact with the ore, the more abstract does his or its concept become. It is something different to the policy maker from what it is to the fact-finder or to the miner.

Sterry Hunt, who has discussed the process as applied to the beach sands of Canada as well as to ores, in the Report of the Canadian Geological Survey for 1867-69, has shown that the name of Catalan forge is incorrect, as this process in no way resembles the Catalan, but is really the old German b1oomary modified by long use in this country. Dr. Hunt gives the probable history of the introduction of the process into the United States, and a series of historic citations of great interest relating to it. Notwithstanding the improvements which have been made in the constrnction of the furnace and its greater output, the process to-day, in all its essential features, is carried out as Karsten described it. It should now be known as the American Bloomary. The name of Jersey or Champlain forge or fire is not sufficiently distinctive. The name of Bloomary, by which the process is usually distinguished, is objectionable, not because it is incorrect but because it is indefinite, as the Knobbling fires, which are a very slight modification of the Walloon process, for making blooms either from pig iron or by sinking scrap, are also called Bloomaries, and although Knobbling fires are only used in a few localities where charcoal pig is made, and special grades of charcoal-refined blooms are required, one does not, without an explanation, know whether the blooms are being manufactured from ore or pig. The name Forge fire is equally indefinite, as it might just as well apply to any of the five direct methods of making blooms which have been in use in Europe, but which have now mostly gone out of date. The name of American Bloomary, however, is the one which most completely describes it, and is the one least open to objection. The names of' German, Jersey, and Champlain bloomary are too local, and these adjectives are thought unnecessary by those who use the process, and we shall not therefore describe it under any of these names, but as the American Bloomary process.

The initial step in the pelletizing of iron ores is the production of green balls. The importance of this step cannot be overemphasized as the physical quality of the green balls has a very significant effect on the subsequent induration process, regardless of the type of the indurating equipment employed. The ability of the green balls to withstand the rigors of handling, distribution, compaction and drying will have an effect on the degree of success of any pelletizing operation. Many factors affect the physical quality of the green balls including the prior processing of the iron ore, the characteristics of the balling feed and the type and quality of the binder used (if any). When working on the development of a new project or studying an existing operation, it is often desirable to determine what effect variations in these factors will have on green ball quality. It is generally impractical to make these determinations on a commercial, or even pilot plant scale, especially when the number of variables to be studied is large. Because of this, many organizations have developed batch techniques for producing green balls to enable them to perform such investigations with a minimum of time and expense. The batch balling method is at best, only an approximation of commercial balling systems. Many practitioners employ the use of pre-formed seed pellets to initiate a batch run. Thus, the growth mechanism encountered in any experiment is essentially snowballing. Unless an instability is introduced into a balling test (such as an excessive initial feed rate or an unusual feed material characteristic) the growth mechanism of coalescence is not present to a significant extent nor is it desirable. In a continuous operation, both mechanisms are present and necessary to sustaining the system. The batch balling technique thus produces pellets in an idealized manner and cannot be used to directly predict commercial green ball qualities. A general relationship does exist however, and the procedure is fairly sensitive to variations in test parameters. Although many refinements to this technique have been introduced over the years, batch balling is still essentially an art and subject to "operator effect". Therefore, to assure consistant and reliable results, skilled technicians who carefully adhere to established practice must be utilized.

During recent years the iron ore industry has experienced a continuous consolidation trend following increased merger and acquisition activities. Analysing and evaluating these mergers is important in order to establish potential effects. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the price effects caused by the merger between Rio Tinto and North Ltd in 2000. The merger was cleared by the European Commission, as well as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, shortly after its announcement. The analysis will be conducted using a simulation model based on a proportionality calibrated almost ideal demand system, which uses the premerger situation in order to estimate the post-merger outcome. The relevant market is defined using shipments data. This is followed by the simulation model applied to the defined relevant market. The results show that the concentration on the market, given by the HHI, increases approximately 15 per cent, and that the market share of the new companyÆs reaches almost 20 per cent. Compared to the CommissionÆs assessment the results indicate a more concentrated market and thus a higher concern for possible competitive effects. Furthermore, the results suggest that the predicted average market price increase from the merger is 1.6 per cent. However, the merged firm is able to increase their average price by 5.1 per cent.
