Sustainability in its simplest assessment has been defined as æmeeting the needs of the present without jeopardising the needs of future generationsÆ. For the mining industry alone, this statement could indeed be interpreted by the many cynics in our community as an oxymoron; as miningÆs very existence requires the extraction and consumption of finite resources. John Chipman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.)—After looking over the authors' shoulders for several years and after many discussions on the interesting diagrams of the types shown, it is a pleasure to see a formal paper published on this subject. There can be no doubt of the practical usefulness of the concepts shown. Inclusion formation in steel is such a highly complex matter that any system for understanding the subject is bound to be welcomed by those who must work with steels and who see in their day-to-day experience the good and evil effects of inclusions. A feature of the work with which the discusser has been concerned, and which he would now like to attempt to explain, is the relation between the schematic diagrams which the authors use and the phase diagrams for related systems. Obviously, the authors' diagrams are in no sense complete phase diagrams. However, there is a relation between this type of diagram and the true phase diagram, and the understand- ing of this relation ought to help in understanding the general picture which the authors are presenting. Consider the authors' Fig. 4, which shows the liqui-dus relations in the Fe-Mn-S-0 system. To show the complete relations between temperature and composition in these four ternary systems would require four triangular prisms, the vertical axes of which would represent temperature. The four triangles of Fig. 4 represent basal projections of certain lines from the four prismatic phase diagrams. Readers of the paper are all more or less acquainted with this type of projection and its usefulness and limitations are generally understood. In order to concentrate on the interesting parts and to minimize the less interesting features, the composition scale may be shifted to de-emphasize regions containing gaseous sulphur and oxygen. Such a diagram is shown in Fig. 16, which is a distorted version of the authors' Fig. 4. Small buttons of fused tantalum have been produced by are fusion in a vacuum, by drawing an arc between sticks of pressed tantalum and a tantalum-faced water-cooled copper block. However, ingots of appreciable size can be produced only by the heat-treatment of bars pressed from powder. The following outline covering the production of finished bars of tantalum by the methods of powder metallurgy is also used for the production of columbium, taking into account the difference in the melting points of these two metals. Pressing the Powder With possibly a few exceptions, a pressing operation is one of the essential steps in the practice of powder metallurgy. In fact, the author's experience with a number of high-melting-point metals and with numerous types of hard carbide compositions has led him to believe that this operation is often one of the most important in the entire process, and frequently one of the most difficult to carry out in a satisfactory manner. Defects due to improper pressing can readily lead to a defective finished product. It is the author's opinion that rarely is a bar or other article pressed from metal powder in such a way that all parts of the piece are uniformly pressed. The nearest approach to uniformity of pressing is possibly attained when the powder is contained in a flexible receptacle, such as rubber, and is pressed under a liquid by hydrostatic pressure. However, this method is not generally applicable. Hydraulic pressing in steel dies where one or two punches are forced into the die must usually be resorted to. As the pressure in such a die is built up, the powder begins to cling to the walls of the die with a tenacity dependent upon the nature of the powder, and this results in a bridging action, so that the layers of powder adjacent to the moving punch are pressed more heavily than those further removed in the mass. Frequently, as the pressure is carried higher, there may be a mass slippage of the powder upon itself, with the result that slip cracks are formed within the pressed

Several investigators1-8 have reported evidence of the existence of native or connate water in oil-and-gas-bearing strata. Both water and salt have been detected in cores of oil sands that yielded oil and gas exclusively when produced. Electrical logs often reveal unexpectedly low resistivity through oil and gas sands, indicating the presence of some material that is a considerably better conductor of current than oil and gas. Furthermore, calculationsg of the oil and gas content of reservoirs based upon production and reservoir-pressure decline data indicate appreciably lower values than are arrived at under the assumption that the pore space is occupied completely by oil and gas. Origin and Occurrence of Connate Water in Oil-and-gas-bearing Formations The view has been expressed, 10-15 and is generally agreed upon, that the expulsion of oil and gas material from source beds and the subsequent migration and accumulation occurred in the presence of salt water. As the strata that usually form reservoirs for oil and gas were laid down by, or in the presence of, ancient seas, the pore space within the strata must have been saturated with salt water before the entrance of the oil and/or gas. Thus, the accumulation of oil and/or gas in the upper regions of structures suitable for reservoirs must have required displacement of the connate water therefrom. In the absence of any forces other than gravitational, it would be expected that the displacement of the connate water out of the zones finally occupied by gas and oil would be complete, and that the vertical distribution of gas, oil, and water in a reservoir would be strictly in the order of their densities. Apparently, however, surface and interfacial forces that will not permit complete segregation of the fluids are active within the capillary spaces comprising a reservoir. The effects of these forces on both accumulation and production of oil and gas have been the subject of study by a number of investigators.16-37 In general, the view is held that the character of most materials that make up the reservoir rock leads to preferential wetting of the rock by

The great activity with which the oil resources of the northern Cantons of the State of Veracruz have been developed has largely resulted from the great success obtained by the important explorations carried out since 1902 in the Ebano district in the North, and several years later near Tuxpam, in the South. It must not be thought that these successes were quickly obtained, since the preliminary studies by good experts, the acquisition of what were thought to be the most promising coast lands, the extensive clearing thereof, and finally the number of unsuccessful drillings at great depth, signified an original outlay of some tens of millions of dollars before finding commercial oil. The discovery of oil in industrial quantities at Cerro de la Pez, Ebano district, and the famous Dos Bocas gusher some years later, which was burned, once and for all made famous the Veracruz coast, where today is concentrated the Mexican output of mineral oil. In 1917, this production was nearly 61,000,000 bbl. It is well known that this output represents only a fraction of what the wells in actual production can furnish, because with adequate means of transportation and storage, the present extraction could be somewhat over 300,000,000 bbl. a year. These enormous potential oil resources of the Veracruz coast proceed from a relatively small number of wells, scattered over a few oil fields, separated from each other by large unexplored areas, wherein may be found other favorable fields which, in time, will undoubtedly become just as great centers of oil production. Experts who know our Gulf Coast believe that lands with commercial oil resources lie not only between the Pgnuco and Tuxpan Rivers, but that indications are that the oil zone of Mexico, with more or less interruption, takes in the coast zone from Northern Tamaulipas to the foot of the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, and the banks of the Usumacinta River. This generalization is not merely the outcome of optimism, but is the result of the persistency with which one finds, throughout this Gulf Coast, the most usual characteristics upon which we depend for recognizing oil-bearing lands.

The term oil property, in this discussion, includes any type of easement or grant under which petroleum might be produced; it ranges from the mere right to drill on undeveloped wildcat acreage up to a fully developed oil property. The values of an oil property, as thus defined, vary widely according to the use for which it is intended, whether it is from the viewpoint of the speculator, the fraudulent stock promoter, the refiner and pipe-line owner, or the oil producer. The market value of a property is usually a combination of some two or more of these influences, and occasionally a combination of all of them, but we prefer to treat each viewpoint as distinct from the others, allowing the reader to make his own combination in such proportions as his inclination and property seem to require. This paper will treat the subject from the viewpoint of the oil producer. However, the other influences have such bearing on the cost of property to the producer and on the price he might obtain by its sale as to warrant brief discussion of them. Speculation, particularly lease speculation, is a parasitic growth on the oil industry, healthy enough, but of no economic value. The class of property usually dealt in for this purpose is the undeveloped lease. Its speculative value may have some relation to its probable productive value, but most frequently this value is the product of temporary excitement due to local development. The lease speculator, seeking out the trend of development or securing early information regarding a proposed test or a new discovery, immediately secures leases whose market value will be increased when the existence of such development becomes more widely known. His profits are purely unearned increment. Not proposing to spend money in exploration, he can afford to compete in purchase with the operator, who, in addition to bonus paid, must spend large sums in testing out his own acreage and that of the nearby speculator as well. The development of residual stress in strip during rolling has not been systematically studied. A few scattered papers1 -3 mention the existence of residual stresses in rolled strip or touch upon some of their consequences,4 but there is no report of experimental studies in the literature describing the effect of roll diameter, strip thickness, reduction per pass, metal or metal temper on the magnitude of residual stresses developed in strip. A knowledge of the effect of these factors is of utmost importance since the present trend in some mills to roll thicker castings brings the rolling operation directly into that set of conditions which, as will be brought out in the present paper, can develop residual stresses of a high order of magnitude. Fundamentally, residual stresses are developed when a metal is inhomogeneously unloaded from a plastic stress state. A quantitative treatment of the problem requires a reasonably complete understanding of both the plastic stress state existing in the metal during deformation and the elastic stress state that would exist in the metal if the metal deformed as a perfectly elastic body. Our knowledge of either state during rolling is so meager that we can make no more than certain limited predictions. The external stress state* operating between the roll and the metal consists of Fig i—External stress state operating on metal being rolled (after siebel and LUEG5) compressive stresses acting almost perpendicularly to the strip surface but varying in intensity both across the width of the strip and along the length of contact between the roll and the strip. An example of such a stress distribution is shown in Fig I. The nature of the internal stress state, produced by this distribution, is not known. Various investigators,5-7 however, have felt that a qualitative similarity must exist between the internal stress state so produced and that produced in a wide strip that is compressed between two flat-nosed punches. MANY existing ore deposits of valuable metals have been worked out in their upper surface levels and the continued productivity of these mines is dependent on their extension to greater depths in the earth. The maximum depths at present reached are about 6000 to 8000 ft. below the surface, with no evidence of an impoverished ore vein. These mines are widely distributed; some of the best known are in South Africa, Brazil, India and in the western sections of the United States. Among the factors which increase the difficulty of working these mines at increasing depths are hoisting, rock pressure and temperature. The manner and effectiveness with which these problems arc met will, no doubt, determine in a large measure the ultimate depths to which any mine can be profitably worked. The most critical of these three factors at present is the increase in temperature with depth. The high temperature and humidity in many of these mines at present are severely detrimental to the health of the workers and greatly hamper their efficiency. Some have almost reached a condition in which the human system cannot survive. The problems involved in the cooling and ventilation of mines have all been ably analyzed and presented in previous articles. For this reason, only a résumé of conditions affecting the cooling and conditioning of deep and hot mines will be given in this paper before attention is directed to possible methods of improving atmospheric conditions in the working levels. Physiological Effects of Temperature, Humidity and Air Motion Many data on the physiological effects of different atmospheric conditions on the human system have been compiled and published through the combined efforts of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, the U. S. Bureau of Mines and U. S. Public Health Service. These data were not primarily developed around the conditions existing in deep mines, but the upper temperature limits of the investigations extend into, and are applicable to, mine atmospheric conditions. For many years mine surveyors and exploration engineers have sought an accurate means of transferring meridian underground by using the gyro-compass. These efforts have generally failed, either because they were inaccurate or because the size and cost of the unit were prohibitive. During the past ten years, however, great strides have been made. Autonetics in California has developed a comparatively light-weight (100-lb) gyro-theodolite, and the Institute for Mine Surveying at Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany has developed an instrument that is accurate to within 20" to 30" of arc. Concurrently, Minneapolis-Honeywell has produced an astounding gyro, the size of a salt shaker, that weighs less than 0.5 lb and compares favorably in performance with the 50-lb gyros of conventional design. This unit, designed for missile guidance, should be adaptable for surveying small boreholes. Given the proper interest and approach from the engineering fraternity, excellent gyrocompasses could probably be available for accurate underground survey work at nominal cost within the next three years. Principles of the Gyro-Compass: The gyrocompass, used for 50 years as a navigational instrument in ships and aircraft, senses the turning axis of the earth and points out true polar north. It does this by employing the earth's rotation, the force of gravity, and the precession characteristics of a gyro. For further details the reader is referred to several excellent publications'"3 covering the principles and application of the gyroscope. The heart of the gyro-compass is the gyroscope, or rapidly spinning wheel, which rigidly maintains its angular orientation in inertial space. Free gyros employ universal joints to allow the wheel axle to maintain its rigid spatial orientation independent of base motion disturbances. Free gyros are independent of the earth's turning and are not north-seeking. Only as they might be initially oriented parallel to the earth's turning axis could any north indication be obtained. In practice, the free gyro tends to drift off its set position and lose its accuracy. The Sperry-Sun Well Surveying Co. instrument (5M in O. D.) is of this free gyro type. It is counterbalanced, however, against the rotational effects of the earth, so that orientation of the spinning axis will be maintained throughout the survey.

This, report represents the comments of the individual members of the A. I. M. E. Sub-committee on Physics of Mine Ventilation on the proposals of a special committee of the Institution of Mining Engineers (London). As might be expected, there is a certain diversity of opinions, for owing to the shortness of time- it was not possible for the sub-committee to get together for informal discussion. The report is presented in this form in the hope that it will bring out a full discussion by other members in the Institute. OLE SINGSTAD?, New York, N. Y.-The Atkinson formula, P =SV2 K a is quoted and it is stated that this formula is especially applicable to mine galleries but is unwieldy in application, as in many problems the value of K, S and a are assumed not to change. This is the same formula that was used during the preliminary calculations for the ventilation of the Holland Tunnel, and where the above-mentioned values were constant for a number of cases, it was a very simple matter to rewrite the equation n the form P = K1V2 and avoid the repeated use of identical figures. The Atkinson formula assumes 1. That resistance to flow is independent of the pressure. 2. Changes in volume due to change in pressure may be neglected. 3. Changes in density and viscosity may be neglected. 4. That the coefficient K is a constant. 5. That P is proportional to V2. We found, from our experiments in connection with the ventilation of the Holland Tunnel, that all the above assumptions could be safely made, with the exception of No. 3, and No. 4 at, very low velocities. In mine work, where many assumptions must necessarily be made, it would seem inconsistent to attempt to make any allowance for the other factors, which are so small that they can be determined only by the most careful experimental work. However, P does depend directly on the density of the air, and to that extent the Atkinson formula is incomplete.

There are two main sources of the water that floods productive oil or gas sands. The water may rise from the lower depths of the producing stratum, or it may come from beds above or below the oil-bearing formation. Usually the recovery of oil is decreased by water entering the oil sands, and most oil-field waters, especially those of deep wells, tend to foster the formation of an emulsion, which is expensive to treat. This paper deals with a method of distinguishing between waters that encroach upon oil-bearing beds from sources in the same stratum and waters that reach the oil sands from horizons above. In order to remedy effectually water difficulties in oil and gas wells, it is absolutely necessary to determine the source of the invading water. Sometimes evidence such as the structural relations between the strata penetrated by deighboring wells and those found in the well under investigation is not adequate; also, data from drill logs and well records, from mechanical tests made on the wells by plugs, testers, drilling tools, etc., and from tests by chemical indicators such as eosin and Venetian red, may be unsatisfactory, for such data may fail to locate the source of the infiltrating waters. As a resort in such cases, the application of chemical analyses, that is, the comparison of an analysis of the water in question with that of typical waters from the various water horizons in that particular district, has in certain instances proved of value. This method has been used to advantage in the Westside Coalinga field of California, where the source of water may be fairly definitely determined , from its composition. The chief conclusions concerning the chemistry of the oil-field waters in California by G. S. Rogers1 are: "Oil-field water is not necessarily salty, as is generally believed, and may not be even slightly salty to the taste. The degree of concentration of chloride in such water is governed primarily by local conditions and is not affected by the position of the water in relation to oil. Andes Copper has an old camp and a new camp, both isolated until recent road improvements. The old camp is at Potrerillos and the new one at El Salvador, 25 road ,miles away. The company was incorporated in 1916 and the first mine, concentrator, leaching plant, smelter and town were built in the succeeding twelve years. The first blister copper was poured on January 24, 1927. Economic conditions determined the long development period but the end result was the design and construction of a mining complex that was all of a piece, unlike the piecemeal additions to El Teniente and Chuqui. The mining episode at Potrerillos came to an end in 1960 when the ore at La Mina became exhausted and the new mine, El Salvador was brought in. Both of these ore deposits come within four hpundred feet of the surface and had they been developed within the last five years might reasonably have been brought in as open pit mines. However, that is conjecture, and as it stands the operation at La Mina was so ideal for the mining method selected, blockcaving, it became a classic for the textbooks. On the other hand, El Salvador has turned out to be a blockcaving mine to test an engineer's skill. In mining the copper deposit at Indio Muerto mountain, there are ground conditions of every conceivable type. Tunneling in one section, the back can cave like sized pea gravel and only spiling can hold it; in another heading only the lifters are shot but often the rest of the round will sit down in one piece; elsewhere the bottom squeezes up and closes the drifts; and contrary to all other locations, there are sections where the block can be undercut without support. Today the scope of operations at Andes extends from mining to electrolytic copper. Ore is mined at El Salvador and the concentrator is also situated there. Concentrates pipelined 14 miles to Llanth, the water decanted, and then it is hauled by rail 40 miles and 5500 ft higher to the Potrerillos smelter and refinery. "Ores with compressive strength lower than 150 MPa are usually easy to be crushed by conventional jaw crushers and cone crushers. However, for hard ores with compressive strength exceeding 150 MPa and 200 MPa and even up to 250 MPa, such as andesite, hard basalt and olivine, it is difficult to reach satisfactory crushing size and yield or difficult to meet service life and stability use requirements of quick-wear parts by using conventional crushers. As continued increase in ore mining depth and constant generation of new type materials, equipment demand for crushing hard ores becomes increasing high. A new type inertia vibrating crusher is designed. It is powered by a high-speed rotating vibration exciter and can obtain required crushing force by adjusting eccentric mass, eccentricity and rotating speed so as to crush various ores with high hardness. This paper introduces the design process of its structure and working principle, discusses the design calculation methods of vibration excitation system, vibration damping and energy storage system and other key mechanism and provides technical references for this type of vibrating crusher.DESIGN PHILOSOPHYThe conventional jaw crusher mainly acquires extrusion force from crank motion to realize crushing. The motor drives the eccentric shaft via the transmission device to bring the moving jaw to swing relative to the stationary jaw. When the moving jaw moves close to the stationary jaw, ores between them are crushed by extrusion; when the moving jaw moves away from the stationary jaw, crushed ores are discharged from the discharge gate at the lower end between the moving jaw and the stationary jaw.The conventional spring cone crusher and the hydraulic cone crusher mainly acquire extrusion force from cranking motion to realize crushing. The motor drives the eccentric sleeve via the transmission device, the moving cone shaft generates an eccentric distance to make cranking motion under the action of the eccentric sleeve. When the moving cone moves close to the stationary cone, ores between them are crushed by extrusion. When the moving cone moves away from the stationary jaw, crushed ores are discharged from the discharge gate at the lower end between the moving cone and the stationary cone under the action of dead weight."

This paper describes the design, construction and performance of sill pillars using cemented development mullock at the Crusader Gold Mine. The orebody is some 35 m - 60 m in length, 5 m - 8 m wide, dipping at 60¦ - 85¦ and plunging at about 40¦ to the north. It is accessed via a footwall decline. The ore occurs at the contact between basalt and ultramafic. This contact is characterised by shearing and alteration; and is prone to unraveling failure. The cut and fill mining method at Crusader extracts 25 m high ore blocks in four flat back lifts and one 8 m thick crown pillar. To enable full recovery of these high-grade crown pillars with minimal dilution, a 5 m thick sill pillar is constructed using cemented rock fill (CRF), after mining of the bottom two lifts in each block. Uncemented development mullock is used as rock fill (RF) for subsequent lifts. Development mullock and cement/water slurry is mixed underground to produce CRF. The fill is transported to the stope in LHDs and dumped on the floor. The sill pillar is advanced progressively, with compaction provided by the loader driving over the previously placed fill. Old jumbo rods are installed as shear pins along the flat dipping hangingwall to reduce the risk of rotational failure of the pillar. A fan of cable bolts is installed into the hangingwall to prevent unraveling failure in the sheared ground. Buffer blasting is used to minimise damage to the CRF sill pillar when the crown pillar below is extracted. At the time of writing, extraction of the crown pillar underneath the CRF has taken place at the 930 stope. The crown pillar was extracted successfully with dilution from the backfill and hangingwall minimised and 98 per cent of the gold recovered. This compares with pillars that were mined beneath uncemented backfill where only 70 per cent of the gold was recovered and where there was significant dilution from the backfill and from hangingwall failures. Where no CRF was placed, there were also numerous production delays caused by large rocks from the hangingwall blocking the stope brow.

SOME time ago,, a prominent engineer asked a representative of the firebrick industry to prepare a comprehensive paper on blast-furnace refractories. It was to have been the purpose of this paper to gather practical experiences from widely different sources, in the hope of determining what kind or kinds of firebrick were best adapted for certain uses. This engineer sent questionnaires to the large consumers of blast-furnace linings and stovebrick and received very detailed replies as to their experiences. These replies are conflicting, but, having been turned over to the writer, form the basis of this attempt to meet the request. Because of the impossibility of making final recommendations at this time, a few of the more interesting and commonly known methods of studying refractories are also discussed, as well as the more recent developments in this field. The first reply to, the questionnaire stated that good service was being secured from the linings. This satisfactory condition was attributed to the use of a very good distributor. The writer believed that manufacturers try to and do produce a good product and that the proper handling of equipment is of the utmost importance, if good results are to be secured. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The second reply stated that good life was secured from the furnace linings, but that the writer had had soft-fired stovebrick crumble and, for that reason, preferred a hard-fired product for use in this position. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The third reply stated that firebrick had crumbled from the mantle up; the cause was not known. The fourth reply stated that the stove linings were satisfactory. Hand-made furnace linings failed after 4 years' service so a steam-pressed lining was installed which was still good after 4 years of service. Consequently, a second steam-pressed lining was installed but this disintegrated at the top after the furnace had been in- blast 7 months. The firebrick manufacturer attributed this failure to the expansion of iron blocks that had been installed at the stock line to prevent erosion.

So far as the quality of the product is concerned, the history of the production of pig iron for foundry purposes is one of constant retrogression. The steps in this deterioration began with cold-blast charcoal pig iron, then anthracite iron, coke iron; then gradually warm to hot-blast coke iron, with the charcoal furnaces also heating their blast to get greater tonnages, and finally the present-day hot-blast coke irons with scrap additions to the ordinary burden that, according to one European report, have gone as high as 65 per cent. Parallel with this quality retrogression is the enormous increase in furnace tonnages from about 15 to over 1000 tons per day in excep tional instances of modern practice. The key to this situation is economic pressure. The effect is a growing differentiation between furnace production for gray iron and malleable foundries and for the production of commercial steel. As the foundry is often compelled to draw upon the pig irons made for steel purposes, for economic reasons, whereas the steel industry does not draw upon foundry pig irons proper, the situation is resolving itself into one of grave consequence for the life of the gray-iron castings industry, and hence the intensive present-day feeling in foundry circles for rigid specifications to govern the quality of pig irons sold for foundry use. In the discussion of a paper on the use of scrap in the blast furnace held recently in the Institute, a very pertinent remark was made by one of the participating furnacemen, who confessed that "the things found wrong by the foundryman with his iron were beyond his depth." It may be added that those things are also beyond the depth of most foundrymen who, however, know from their results that they are getting poorer castings today with many pig irons than they did with those same brands in former years. The chronicle of the oil industry in Oklahoma in 1939 is one of declining production bolstered by strenuous efforts to find new pools or new producing horizons in the older, highly exploited, relatively shallow areas. Production, which averaged 608,000 bbl. daily in 1937, the post-depression peak, declined to 463,000 bbl. daily in 1938 and continued downward to 421,000 bbl. daily for the year 1939. While the state could produce somewhat more oil if demand warranted it, production in most areas is at as great a rate as could be justified on the basis of maximum efficient operation. Outlet for Oklahoma crude has been seriously affected by the increase in production in the Illinois Basin. Crude movements from the Kansas-Oklahoma area to the northeastern consuming centers averaged 314,000 bbl. daily in 1939 as compared with 397,000 bbl. in 1938. Oklahoma producers bore the brunt of this loss of market. The general production decline was accentuated by the August, shutdown of 15 days, precipitated by the action of a major crude purchaser posting a 20-cent reduction in the price of crude. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission, in collaboration with other members of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission, ordered a complete shutdown of all producing wells in order to prevent the premature abandonment of stripper wells, which might result from a prolonged period of production at prices below operating costs. The reduction in price was forestalled, most major purchasers failing to meet the cut in view of the shutdown, and the company initiating the move rescinded its action. Fear of the shutting in of oil wells, especially those making considerable quantities of water, is generally unfounded in the light of a superficial examination of the records. Oklahoma's unprorated pools, which produced 154,000 bbl. daily in May, declined to 152,000 bbl. in June and 143,000 bbl. in July. Immediately following the shutdown, the same pools produced 150,000 bbl. in September, 145,000 in October, and 145,-000 in November. Thus, while the half month's production loss in August has not been made up, the wells apparently hare produced at a greater rate since the shutdown than immediately preceding it.

The progress of metallurgical practice and the demands made by the engineering industry on our foundries and mills have made the crystalline structure of metals a subject of far more than academic interest. Metals and alloys are made up of crystals. Even if we accept the view, so ably maintained by some metallurgists, that the crystals are separated from one another by an amorphous layer, it remains true that all but a very minute fraction of any metallic mass is crystalline. The conditions which affect the growth of crystals are therefore of importance in metallurgy. It is not only castings whose properties depend on the arrangement of their crystals, for the more we learn of the behavior of forged, rolled and drawn metals, the more certain it becomes that it is profoundly influenced by the size and arrangement of the crystals in the original ingot, determining a structure which may persist in a modified form through a long series of mechanical operations and annealings. This is mainly due to the concentration of much of the impurities in the last portions of the liquid to freeze, so that the boundaries between single crystals or groups of crystals are marked out by a zone of segregated material, differing in properties from the mass, and offering a barrier to diffusion and equalization of composition throughout the whole. The importance of this fact has been fully recognized by steel manufacturers, who have to deal with ingots which are sometimes very large, and are cast at a high temperature, containing impurities which have a marked effect on the properties even when present in very small quantity. For this reason the Iron and Steel Institute has set up a committee to examine the whole question of the heterogeneity of steel ingots,(1)† and a report has been issued, containing an account of the structure of 16 ingots, ranging in weight from 15 cwt. to 172 tons, each of which was sectioned and examined by chemical analysis and by etching. A valuable body of data concerning segregation has thus been collected.
