The bulk flotation behaviour of an industrial rougher bank has been determined with a view to characterising the size iepend ent behaviour of the identifiable nineral groups present. A relatively simple flotation model, based on first order kinetics and the assumption of perfect mixers in series ias been used to provide a fit to the operation of the cells. The adequacy of the model is discussed in relation to the characteristics of the ore and the size iependancy of the parameters. It is shown that improved fits are possible if the model accounts explicitly for this size dependancy and demonstrated how the model may be of use in prediction of the grade recovery relationships for different operating conditions as an aid to plant optimisation.

"Methods have been developed to measure the physical properties of molten materials relevant to the fluid flow in high temperature processes. Data for the densities, viscosities and surface tensions of Al-, Ni- and Fe-based alloys are compared with (i) values for the pure metals and (ii) estimated values obtained from models making use of chemical composition of the alloy. Experimental values for metallurgical slags are also given and compared with estimated values.1 IntroductionPhysical property data has proved very useful in improving process control and product quality. For instance, in the continuous casting of steel the viscosity (TJ) of the mould flux is important since it determines (i) the optimum casting conditions, nVc = 2.5±1 dPas (m min-1) where V c is the casting speed and (ii) the level of slag entrapment (which leads to inclusions) in the metal. Thus data for properties like viscosity are exceedingly useful in understanding the process and the problems encountered and the causes of defects and problems.Another interesting development which has helped to increase our knowledge of processes and improve process control and product quality is the development of mathematical models of the fluid and heat flow in the process. These models have been developed to the stage where one of the prime requirements is for good physical property data for the industrial materials involved. Recently, Oxley [1] has shown that the use of reliable, experimental, property values for the commercial alloy in a commercial software package produced a significant improvement in the prediction of casting defects. Thus reliable property data are required for liquid metals but also for (i) liquid slags since many processes involve the use of a slag to refine and protect the metal or to lubricate the mould and (ii) refractories, sand and investment moulds."

Ora Banda Gold Mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Mining is carried out underground by sublevel open sloping resulting in large open stopes. A Mass Blast of approximately 250 000 tonnes was carried out in July 1994 to recover a rib pillar between two stopes, and the crown pillar between the underground mine and the abandoned open pit above. Strategic development within 50 m of the blast consisted of two ventilation shafts and the main decline. This development required careful design and prediction of the blast results. This paper describes the design of the blast, the prediction of the likely effects, the measures taken to reduce the risk to important development, and the results of the blast.

"Iron ore sintering process is the main source of SO2 generated in the steel industry, of which the discharge amount of SO2 emission accounts for about 60% of the total. Aiming at the features of sintering flue gases and existing problems during the flue gas desulphurization, a technical route of flue gas circulation sintering (FGCS) for iron ores has been put forward. Under the simulated experimental conditions, effects of FGCS process on the main output and quality indexes and SO2 emission rule are researched using simulating flue gases. Compared the novel FGCS with conventional sintering process, SO2 in the final sintering flue gas is obviously enriched and the total exhaust gases can be reduced evidently. The decreasing of oxygen content in circulating gases has bad effect on the sintering indexes. Increasing the oxygen potential is beneficial to obtain high quality sinters. This investigation shows that the FGCS process is promising.IntroductionSteel is a kind of essential material for modern society, but steel-making process is characterized by high energy-consumption and emission as well as heavy environmental pollution. Chinese steel industry has developed rapidly in the last decade, and the environmental problem caused by ironmaking and steelmaking have also aroused the greatest concern, especially the atmospheric pollution caused by SO2, CO2, etc. Iron ore sintering process is the main source of SO2 generated in the steel industry, of which the discharge amount of SO2 emission accounts for about 60 % of the total. The development of the desulfurization process for sintering flue gases to reduce SO2 emission in sintering process is not only the requirements of sustainable development but also the most important environmental tasks for steel industry [1-5]."

The simulation study on the process of iron ore beneficiation plant of Essar Steel, Kirandul was carried out. The iron ore fines and slimes generated nearby Bailadila mines of NMDC are used as raw materials for this beneficiation plant. The capacity of the plant is 1400 TPH operating in parallel in two streams. The capacity of the plant was utilized about 60% of throughput capacity. To improve the plant capacity as well as quality performance, the simulation study was conducted to detect the bottleneck of the process. The process samples were collected from input and output of each processing unit operation to generate the data base for simulation study at the feed rate of 400 and 500 TPH of iron ore fines in a single stream. The characteristics data i.e., breakage and selection functions were generated using MILLSOFT package for simulation of ball mills. Then MODSIM package was used to evaluate the performance of each unit operation to identify the bottleneck. It was established by a simulation study that the intermediate thickener draws high current when the feed rate is more than 400 TPH due to high torque drawn by rotating rake because of presence of coarse particles in the input stream to thickener. The problem was sorted out by classification of input stream of thickener to remove the coarse particles. Then the process was simulated at its rated capacity, and experimental validation studies at the plant were also conducted at the feed capacity of 600 and 700 TPH by modification of process flowsheet. The experimental data was almost matching with simulated data. Finally, the processing plant is running with full rated capacity without any bottleneck. A significant part of the currently production of the non-ferrous and precious metals is from sulfide ores. Character feature of sulfide ores is the presence in them always pyrite and wide range of different sulfide minerals else. These minerals are the carriers of valuable for industry metals. Due to the low content of the main components, very often call on the use of collective- selective flow-sheets. The extraction of minerals in the collective concentrates determined in a large extent the effectiveness of the collective-selective sheets. In conditions of bulk flotation kinetics to floatate of the various minerals is different. Due to why it is and how it can be used for a more effective selection of minerals ?this is the main task of this report. For this purpose are used results from the bulk flotation of pyrite, copper sulfides, molybdenite, galena, blenda. It is separated and place of host rocks. Base it of large experimentation material, including both electro-kinetic measurements of mineral systems, as well as laboratory flotation tests and factories monitoring it is established kinetics of flotation of mineral particles in conditions of collective flotation. Made an effort to clarify the effect as of the species and the proportion of different sulfide minerals involved in flotation pulp else. Traced was the impact of the density and aeration of the flotation pulp on deferens in kinetics of mineral flotation in condition of balk flotation. The obtained results are used to increase the efficiency of the diffraction flotation of the complex sulfide ores containing precious metals. A rural mail route passes within quarter of a mile of the mine. Paved reads from Heflin lead to Atlanta, Birmingham, and Montgomery. The country Toads leading from Heflin are well-maintained but are practically inaccessible during inclement weather. The road crossing the property within a hundred yards of the mine needs grading and repairing (see fig. 1)."

"The anode process of carbon electrode in fluoride melt was studied by voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Anode gases were analyzed by gas chromatography on-line during controlled-potential electrolysis. Two peaks were observed on the cyclic voltammograms. According to the results of gas chromatography, the first peak was corresponded to the discharge of residual oxide ions, with the formation of CO and CO2. Discharge of fluoride ions occurred at 4.1 V vs. Li+/Li, and leading to the anode effect. With the occurrence of anode effect, small amount of CF4 was detected. As the potential reached 4.5 V, CF4 and C2F6 gas evolution occurred, and the current increased to form the second peak.1.IntroductionIn the primary production of Aluminum and some rare earth metals like neodymium, a departure from normal cell operation known as anode effect results in the generation of perfluorocarbons (PFCs), which have high global warming potentials [1]. Owing to the pressure of environmental protection, considerable research has been carried out to clarify the mechanism of anode effect and PFC generation of industry and laboratory cells in the aluminum electrolysis system [2-9]. The common result on PFC generation is that the PFCs are emitted from Hall-Heroult cells only when they are on anode effect. In this article, we selected LiF, the main electrolyte for the neodymium electrolysis [10-11], to perform further investigation on the underlying kinetics of PFC generation and the nature of the reactions at the electrode.2. ExperimentalAll experiments were carried out in an alumina tube reactor, which was filled with high purity helium atmosphere. Spectrographic graphite crucibles were used, which played the dual role of molten fluoride container and the counter electrode. Lithium fluoride was analytical grade. 1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Washoe smelter,. Anaconda, Mont., the blister-copper from the converters is transferred, by means of a crane, to a refining-furnace,, in which it is brought to proper pitch by means of air and poles. From this furnace the refined copper, containing gold and silver, is poured into cast-iron molds placed on a platform-conveyor, giving an anode 36.75 in. long, 28 in. wide, and 21 in. thick. By reason of a disagreement between the smelter and the refinery, in reference to the silver-content of the anodes, it became necessary to investigate the methods of sampling used. II. SMELTER METHOD OF SAMPLING. At the smelter the sampling is done by " spotting " into water a small portion of the molten stream of copper as it flows from the furnace, by batting" the stream with a wooden paddle. The first sample is taken 30, min. after the pouring is started, three. other samples being taken at 1-hr. intervals, each sample weighing from 4 to 6 oz. The samples are dried, examined for particle's of burnt wood, screened on a 10-mesh screen of No. 8 wire to remove the fines, the oversize then screened on a 4-mesh screen of No. 20 wire to remove the coarse, the undersize of this screen being taken as the sample. Teh four portions thus obtained are thoroughly mixed and spli in half by passing over a 16-slot splitting-device, slots being 0.5 in. wide. One-half of the sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis and one-half kept as a duplicate. III. REFINERY METHOD OF SAMPLING. During the recent study of lubricating oils carried on in the San Francisco laboratory of the United States Bureau of Mines, it became desirable to distill the oils used in the experimental work at pressures as low as 10 millimeters (mercury column) absolute. In the effort to Overcome difficulties and eliminate sources of error, certain changes were made in the apparatus for vacuum distillation used by the Bureau of Mines for crude petroleum.4 These changes were described in R.I. 2819, issued in July, 1927. Subsequent to the publication of R.I. 2819 several other changes have been made, and the present form of the apparatus for vacuum distillation of lubricating oils is described in this revision of R.I. 2819. These changes were found to give more accurate checks on duplicate distillations. The major part of the credit for the laboratory work which developed the changes in the apparatus and method revised herein is due to Boyd Guthrie, assistant petroleum chemist, and R. V. Higgins, junior chemist, o the San Francisco laboratory, United States Bureau of Mines. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The distilling flask employed is essentially the Hempel flask as used by the United States Bureau of Mines for the analytical distillation of petroleum.5 he complete apparatus is shown in Figure 1. The fractionating column and exposed portion of the flask is wrapped with 4 inch asbestos rope and then surrounded by a cylindrical hood of 1/8 inch pliable asbestos sheet with a narrow air space between the wrapping and the cylindrical hood. This was found necessary to prevent any radiation or convection heat losses from the column, and resulted in obtaining a more even and constant fractionation by eliminating any dephlegmating action caused by temperature changes around the column.

In a major milestone for geoscience, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has unveiled the Cooperative National Geologic Map, the most detailed national-scale geologic map of the country to date. The project offers a fresh, layered look at the rocks and sediments that make up the United States. For geologists, engineers and mining professionals, it provides both a technical achievement and a practical tool that will help shape future exploration and landuse decisions across the country. The new map provides a regional view of geology both on and beneath the Earth’s surface. Using different colors to represent rock types and sediments, it allows users to toggle through multiple layers, revealing for the first time the surficial and quaternary deposits that lie above the bedrock. “This is the first national map to include multiple layers of mapped geology, the first built to be easily updated as new maps are published, and the first to be delivered in a user-friendly online interface,” said Joseph Colgan, a USGS research geologist who led the development team. The Cooperative National Geologic Map is a culmination of more than a century of collaborative mapping between the USGS and the nation’s state geological surveys. More than 100 existing maps produced by state geological surveys and the USGS over the past 40 to 50 years were combined and standardized to create the national data set. During its three-year creation, the USGS prepared digital data, built the system to bring the maps together, developed the web interface and underwent a review and approval process. Through this process, decades of fieldwork, analysis and digital cartography were brought together to provide both national and local expertise.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. Weathering of sulfides and the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) is a well- known environmental issue in on-land mining. The process can release potentially toxic compounds and heavy metals to the environment and is highly influenced by microbial activity. However, the weathering of sulfides in deep-sea environments is not well studied. In 2014 we therefore deployed two titanium incubators filled with freshly ground pyrite grains into an inactive part of the hydrothermal sulfide mound of Loki´s Castle vent field, aiming to study the in-situ seafloor weathering of the freshly exposed sulfides. Each incubator had five chambers placed in a depth profile, where the upper chamber was exposed to the bottom seawater. After one year of exposure, one incubator was collected and analyzed for weathering features and microbial colonization and community composition. In addition, one sediment core (25 cm deep) was collected from the sulfide mound in close vicinity to the incubators, and another core (45 cm deep) was collected from the (hemi)pelagic sediment just outside the sulfide mound. The cores were analyzed for geochemical composition of the solid material and porewater, and the microbial community composition aiming to define the redox zoning and dominating geomicrobiological processes in the natural deposits, and to unravel how these processes influence the mobility of heavy metals during sulfide weathering. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed development of Fe-oxyhydroxide weathering rims on the pyrite grains in the incubator chambers. Spalling of the rims on the most weathered grains, exposing fresh pyrite surfaces to oxidation, was commonly observed. The SEM investigation also revealed a positive correlation between weathering degree and microbial community density. Preliminary results from the microbial community analysis show a high relative abundance of putative sulfide oxidizers, suggesting that the community is governing the degradation of pyrite.

"Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is under construction in Sri Lanka. This project involves 2 Rolled Concrete Core (RCC) Dams connected through a tunnel currently under construction by Drill and Blast method. The water is transferred from first diversion dam to the 2nd regulatory dam and from which, it will be transferred through a 14 km headrace tunnel to the top of a 650 m deep drop shaft that feeds the high pressure water to an underground powerhouse and turbine chamber for generation of 120 MW of electricity. The Headrace and Tailrace tunnels are being excavated by two 4.4 m diameter double shield TBMs. The headrace tunnel has already passed 5km milestone and is mined in hard rock, while the tailrace tunnel has been completed in rather weak and fractured ground. This paper will review the history of the project along with the geology of the site. The operation of TBM in headrace tunnel will be discussed in more detail, focusing on the challenges of excavating through very strong and abrasive quartzite and gneiss on this site, as well as reaches of tunnel in high inflow of water reaching 400 L/Sec. INTRODUCTION This paper aims to introduce the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) as a hydro mechanical project in Sri Lanka, targeted generating hydro-electric power, transferring water for irrigation purposes and controlling seasonal devastating flood. This project lies in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka (Figure 1). The main part of the project is located in the south-western part of the Badulla district in the province of Uva. The south-eastern end of the project site is in the central west of the Moneragala district (province of Uva). Bandarawela is the largest urban setting within the project area, located halfway between the upstream and the downstream ends of the planned hydropower plant and combination of dams, tunnels, and downstream facilities. The Multi-Purpose Project Of Uma Oya is planned to convey water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya Basin for hydroelectric energy generation includes Puhulpola RCC Dam on the Uma Oya river, Dyraaba RCC Dam on the Mahatotilla Oya river, a conveyance tunnel from Uma Oya to Mahatotilla Oya (L=3750m), a long feeder tunnel from Mahatotilla Oya to Kirindi Oya. The feeder (power) tunnel Lot consists of a headrace tunnel (L=15554m), the surge shaft (L=200m) and tank on the upstream of the vertical shaft, a vertical shaft with steel lining (L=650m), an underground powerhouse and a tailrace tunnel (L=3650m)."

The Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) has been carrying out a series of experiments whose principal purpose is to measure the dynamic response of rock media to large pressure pulses. Coupled with the field experiments have been theoretical calculations simulating this response. These two approaches allow an appraisal of the current ability to measure in-situ rock response under extreme conditions and also give a fair estimate of the current state-of-the-art in the area of computer calculation of the response of "real" geologic media to a large load. The area chosen for the test series is composed of a sequence of sedimentary units (shale, sandstone, and limestone) located in the Estancia Valley 45 miles east of Albuquerque, N.M. (Fig. 1). The units, which dip gently off the uplifted Manzano Mountains to the west, are essentially horizontal at the test site. An extensive geologic and geophysical investigation of the area was carried out in the form of surface mapping and seismic exploration. Numerous holes were cored and material properties were determined from tests of the cores. In-situ geophysical measure¬ments were also carried out. The experiment consisted of loading a 60X40 ft test area with a 4000-psi transient exponentially decaying pressure pulse. The pulse was initiated at one end and traveled the 60-ft length of the test bed. The test area was instrumented with acceleration, velocity, and strain measuring devices placed in drill holes to depths of 30 ft. "Confocal fluorescence scanning laser microscope was applied to characterize the surface flaw of ceramics in great detail. A high potential -of the characterization technique is presented first. Then the technique was applied to clarify the relationship between the flexural strength of ceramics and the surface flaw. This kind of direct information of surface flaw should be essential for the fundamental study in this area, but has been lacking. The examination revealed that large defects are present on the machined surface of ceramics. Their size is consistent to the flexural strength measured on the material. The characterization tool was also applied to examine the formation of surface flaw in machining of ceramics.IntroductionClarification of fracture origin should be the starting point in the study on strength in ceramics. However, this task has been extremely difficult in some ceramics, such as an alumina ceramics. It may break from both internal and surface flaws. The former should reflect the quality of production process and the latter the machining. Examination of surface flaws should be very important for developing a better machining method for ceramics. The knowledge may valuable for establishing a better production process also.ExperimentAlumina Referceram (JFCC) was used as samples. They are cut to size of 3x4x40mm, and the surfaces were ground to meet the requirements of testing method for flexural strength of fine ceramics, JIS R 1601. They were soaked in an aqueous solution of fluorescence dye and evacuated with an aspirator for an hour to allow the solution penetrate into surface flaws. After excessive solution remained on the surface was removed by gentle washing, the specimens were dried at 120°C for 48 hours. The 4 point bending mode was applied to measure the fracture strength."

The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows:Regular-price, 1,958 samples, 317 items, and 96 brands; premium-price, 1, samples, 292 items, and 85 brands; third-grade, 58 samples, 22 items, and 14 brands. "The zinc concentrator of the Butte & Superior Copper company, shown on the opposite page, represents an industry which is coming into importance in Butte. The existence of large bodies of zinc ore in some of the silver veins of Butte has been realized for years, but it is only recently that some of them have proved amenable to successful concentration. Most of the zinc ores thus far found in the camp are mixed with considerable pyrite, but those found in the Black Rock and Elm Orlu mines contain very little pyrite, so that a concentrate low in iron is possible.The Butte & Superior mill is rated at 1,200 tons daily capacity. The ore is sphalerite, most of which is finely disseminated through a hard quartz gangue, with small quantities of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, rhodocrosite and rhodonite. In mining, the included granite and the low grade vein matter are sorted out and used for waste filling so that the ore as it goes to the concentrator will carry about 20 per cent of zinc, 1 per cent lead, .25 per cent copper, 8 to 10 ozs. silver and a little gold. The ore bodies ranging from 5 to 103 feet in width, are mined by the square set method and filling of stopes with waste rock.The ore is hard and tough requiring extensive crushing and grinding equipment, consisting of Blake and gyratory crushers, 54-inch and 42-inch high speed rolls, Chili mills, Tube, and Conical mills. All of the lead con¬centrate and part of the zinc concentrate are recovered in the upper part of the mill by jigs and tables. The classifier overflow and the re-ground jig and table tailings go to settling tanks and from there to the Hyde Flotation process, where the balance of the zinc concentrate is recovered, and the tailing go to waste."
