"This paper reviews tailings management at Highland Valley Copper, and outlines main features of its tailings storage facility enclosed between the H-H and L-L dams. Key management focusses are: energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, safety and integrity of the tailings impoundment, environmental protection, and reclamation after decommissioning. Main features of the tailings facility include: high international standards for seismic and flood design criteria, water management and water quality monitoring, operations and construction optimization, reclamation and decommissioning plan, and geotechnical challenges associated with the complex geology of the L-L tailings dam foundation.IntroductionHighland Valley Copper stores its tailings mainly in the Highland Valley tailings facility (ultimate capacity: 1.8 billion tonnes). Smaller tailings storage facilities were operated by predecessor companies: the Number One Pond, the Trojan Pond at Bethlehem and the Highmont Pond at the Highmont operation as well as backfilling the Heustis and Jersey lona Pits at Bethlehem. These areas are currently not in use, and are in the reclamation phase prior to decommissioning. This paper focusses on tailings management in the main facility. As indicated in Figure I, the facility includes three tailings dams: these are, going from east to west, the H-H, J-J and L-L Dam, named after the alignment alternatives in the initial feasibility studies. From 1970 to 1977 Canadian Bechtel Ltd. advised Highland Valley Copper's predecessor company Lornex, on tailings storage at the H-H and J-J Dams and on the L-L Dam. Since the completion of the L-L Starter Dam in 1977, Klohn Leonoff Ltd. has provided ongoing consultation and construction monitoring of the raising of the L-L and the H-H Dams. The J-J Dams is currently buried by deposited tailings. This paper reviews key tailings management focusses and main features of the tailings facility."

"Under high pressure in a deep potash mine, the salt rock behaves in accordance with the concept of a generalized, perfectly plastic substance. The paper presents the evidence of this behaviour and engineering concepts f or room-and-pillar design. IntroductionThe mining and refining facilities at International Minerals &. Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited are located near Esterhaz y at the southeastern edge of the Saskatchewan evaporites. Ore extraction began in 1962 and at the present time the annual mining capacity is in excess of eleven million tons of potash ore.A generalized geological section is shown in Figure I. The mining horizon is overlay in by 100 feet of rock salt followed by a thin bed of competent dry shale. The strata in the next 1,500 feet are generally competent and locally water bearing. The Blairmore formation contains strata of water-bearing unconsolidated sand. Below the mining horizon, rock salt is interbedded with anhydrite bands.The 8-foot mining bed is distinguished mainly by grade and clay content, as there is no definite bed boundary. The chief mineral s are halite, sylvite and, in some cases, carnallite, with up to 2 per cent disseminated clay. The ore is coarse grained, with crystals averaging one-half to three-quarters inch across.The major mining problem is related to the fact that the Dawson Bay formation, overlying the evaporites, contains areas and channels that are highly porous and permeable and are filled with unsaturated brine under high pressure. Consequently, all mining areas, with no exception, must be so designed that the overburden salt stratum remain s competently supported for the duration of the mine .This paper outlines a successful engineering method of determining the stability of the pillar s and designing a stable room -and-pillar mining system."

"Cominco's Polaris Mine is an underground lead/zinc operation located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian High Arctic. Polaris is the world's most northerly base metal mine, situated at about latitude 75°N and longitude 97°W (Fig. 1). The closest community is Resolute Bay about 100 km to the southeast.During the construction and development phase Cominco adopted a unique scheme to save time and money. Many facilities including concentrator, powerhouse, shops and warehouse were built on a barge in southern Canada. The barge was towed 4800 km to the site in August 1981. Production at Polaris began in November 1981. The current mining rate is 1 million tonnes per year. The mine employs 250 people with about 190 on site at any time.GeologyThe deposit is a Mississippi Valley type orebody and lies near the top of the Ordovician Thumb Mountain Formation. Ore minerals consist of sphalerite and galena with the gangue being predominantly dolomite with calcite and marcasite. The orebody is situated completely within permafrost, consequently the voids frequently found in the ore are filled with ice. The orebody strikes north-south, dips approximately twenty degrees to the east and takes up an area about 400 m wide by 700 m long. The upper portion of the orebody (60 m to 150 m below surface) lies in an area called the Panhandle Zone. The deeper portion of the orebody known as the Keel Zone extends to 300 m below surface (Fig. 2). The deposit is strongly zoned with a high grade zinc/lead and iron-rich tabular core overlain and underlain by vein, stringer and breccia mineralization. The ore reserves at January 1991 were 14.6 million tonnes at 3.6% Pb, 13.7% Zn, 3.2% Fe, after producing 8 million tonnes at 3.9% Pb and 14.2% Zn since November 1981"

Aside from having a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in acquiring this is the presence of good mechanics-men who have a desire to be mechanics and who want to know more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. The knowledge and ability to be found in a good mechanic is the result of ambition, curiosity, and determination. With these qualities as a start, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career if he begins learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. The path is rough, but the goal is rewarding. Mining machinery probably absorbs as much or more abuse than any other heavy equipment in use today. And when one considers the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it can be seen that the mine operator needs the best of men and tools to perform the service. MOTORS AND POWER SUPPLY Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were large, heavy-framed, open d-c motors (direct current), using a series or shunt winding. A motor having one or more field coils connected in series and themselves in series with the armature, is called a series motor (Fig. 1). The series motor had the advantage of quickly developing starting torque, and it was, and still is, the best motor for locomotive or shuttle car tramming service. "A planned production increase of 1.25 million tonnes per year at Domtar's salt mine in Goderich, Ontario required an increase in the underground mine ventilation system from 320,000 to 700,000 scfm, The design of the expanded facility included the addition of a 22-foot-diameter shaft to augment the existing production and service shafts.A preliminary review of the ventilation requirement s indicated that in order to pr ovide good economic design for the expanded system, a comprehensive ventilation survey of the existing system was required. The survey was completed in the latter part of 1980, and subsequent engineering design and equipment selection proceeded throughout 1981.This paper presents the methods used to carry out the survey. Particular attention is given to the numerous challenges presented in determining air flows in the large 45-ftwide by 43-ft-high airways. Emphasis is placed on practical field survey techniques.A mathematical model of the ventilation system using a computer program is described, and the application of this program to provide design data and assist in equipment selection is discussed. Economic sizing of airways and fan selection are analyzed considering horsepower and operating costs.IntroductionThe Goderich Mine of Sifto Salt Division, Domtar Inc., is located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron in the town of Goderich, Ontario, and has been operating since November 1959. The salt is extracted by a modified room-and-pillar method, and the workings advance at a rate of 1.5 miles per year by undercutting, drilling and blasting. The surface mine area consists of a 12-acre site in the Goderich harbour, at the mouth of the Maitland River, and the underground property consists of approximately 2,700 acres lying mainly under Lake Huron."

INTRODUCTION The increased activity in the Aus­tralian gold industry over the last decade has resulted in a concomitant increase in the use of sodium cyanide, with a projected consumption of 80,000 tonnes in 1991. Growing environmental awareness by government, industry and the public has generated increased interest in the fate of cyanide near gold mine tailings dams and has highlighted the lack of basic knowledge in the area, particularly for Australian conditions. In 1989 the Chemistry Centre (W.A,) commenced a' project, under the auspices of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association entitled "Fate of cyanide in the Enviroment Near Mine Tailings" to investigate some of the issues arising from the management of tailings containing cyanide, The project, which has been supported by thirteen companies has three broad aims:

ennec?tt's Bameys Canyon Mine personnel developed an mnovahve process to extract gold from a small (1.8 million tons) sulfide ore zone in an oxidized ore body located at the Bameys Canyon Mine. This approach consists of extracting the sulfides from the ore via flotation, shipping the concentrate to Kennecott's new smelter, and mixing the flotation tailings with the oxide ore, agglomerating the mixture, and stacking the resultin tailings/oxide ore combination on the heaps. Conventional heap leaching technology is utilized to recover the gold from the mixed materials. Overall, the total gold recovery from the sulfide ore is esti­mated to be 90%. This approximation is based on a smelter gold recovery of 98% from the concentrate and an 88% recovery from the tailings during heap leaching

OFFICIAL Washington is gravely concerned over the adverse military situation caused by the all-out intervention of the Chinese Communists in Korea. What the policies of the United Nations and the United States will be in the new crisis is unknown. However, Stuart Symington, chairman of the NSRB, set the general pattern for mobilization in the near future when he said that this country would move from a "light gray to a dark gray mobilization." The implications of accelerated mobilization for the mining industry are particularly apparent with respect to the manpower situation. Revised policies recently initiated for the recall of reservists may be abrogated, in which case key personnel in the mining industry may face calls to active duty with insufficient consideration given to their indispensability to national defense in their present positions.

Minerals - A Key to Soviet Power, by Demitri B. Shimkin. Harvard University Press. $8.00, 452 pp., 1953. -The book is an economic evaluation of the position of the Soviet Union in respect to mineral wealth and development. Various sources are drawn upon, including the reports issued after completion of the various five year plans. The book is of considerable reference value despite the confusion which beclouds information concerning Soviet mineral progress. The theoretical study is the joint product of some of the staff of the Harvard University Russian Research Center. The author's approach to metals and nonmetals in the Soviet Union is systematic and he presents a great deal of data covering the period 1926 to 1950. Indicated weaknesses in the mineral economy are highlighted. Some considerable space is given to Soviet mineral future.

In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors have found large variations in the results of strength tests performed on closely sized pellets from the same batch. Where bentonite was the binder, such variations in the pellet quality were attributed to the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Studies have shown that pellet strength is strongly dependent on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. However, before such a relationship can serve as a guide for the development of better mixing techniques and the associated economy of bentonite consumption, more precise knowledge of the bentonite-concentrate mixtures is needed. Alkyd resins are used in surface treatment. They are product of the glycerolysis followed by polymerization. In the present work it was studied methods of alkyd resin production from crude glycerol compared with resin produced with pure glycerol. This glycerol corresponds to 10% of the final products in the biodiesel production. The crude glycerol was partially purified with neutralization, flotation and adsorption. The experiments were accomplished with temperature control, inert atmosphere and with several quantities of the substrate. For the products characterization physic-chemistry methods, infrared spectroscopy and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance were used. According to the observed results, the resins obtained with crude glycerol have presented similar properties of the classic alkyd resin produced with pure glycerol. The exploitation of the crude glycerol reduces the stages and costs of the process.

As free milling oxide gold ore reserves are depleted, more mining companies are having to evaluate the available alternatives for treating refractory deposits. The selection of a treatment process can be very difficult; and, despite the claims of their respective proponents, there is no one process that will continuously prove superior. Selection of the optimum process for an individual deposit is contingent on the size of the deposit, the grade of the deposit and the refractory nature of the ore. Since extensive metallurgical test programs are usually required to determine the optimum extraction process, an inappropriate initial selection may prove costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the steps involved in evaluating a refractory ore in order to expedite the evaluation of the required process through the feasibility study stage.

A distribution-free approach is developed for estimating a bivariate distribution function for an ore deposit in terms of the experimental grade correlogram and experimental "weight functions" of the deposit. These weight functions are calculated as part of the approximation used in the mononodal cutoff concept. Use of this method obviates the need to transform to an isofactorial bivariate model. The method is illustrated for two examples, where the bivariate distributions are supposedly known : (a) the bivariate normal distribution and (b) the bivariate lognormal distribution. It is shown that the estimate of the underlying bivariate distribution is optimal when working at the mononodal cutoff, as can be anticipated theoretically. The approximation decreases in quality on either side of the mononodal cutoff, but still remains acceptable as a first estimate of the actual bivariate distribution.

This paper shows that if a drift has a brattice which is sufficiently leaky, changes in the operating point of the fan depend solely on the volumetric efficiency within the drift. Under this high leakage condition, an increase in the length of the drift causes very little shift in the fan operating point. For less leaky brattices, the operating point depends on both the fan characteristic curve and the volumetric efficiency. It is shown that for the fan curve and drift parameters used in this paper the fan operating point in a drift with a volumetric efficiency of 50% is essentially the same as a drift which has a zero efficiency. In this region of efficiency, an increase of 300% in the length of the drift causes only a 3% increase in fan operating pressure.

Continuous pi lot scale dewatering tests compared the performance of the vacuum disc filter with that of the screen bowl and the solid bowl centrifuges. The test results allow the a priori prediction of plant product moisture based on the feed particle size. This information is useful for selecting the best dewatering device for a given size material and for optimizing the dewatering performance of existing plant installations. Quantitative information was gathered on the ability of filter aids to improve the filtration rate of fine coal slurries. A polymeric flocculant and oil were added to the disc filter feed material at various dosage levels. Both filter aids increased the disc filter output. For the coal tested, the flocculant filter aid achieved higher filtration rates at a lower cost.

The addition of organic and inorganic dispersants to aqueous suspensions of heterogeneous particles (kaolin) was found to significantly affect the solubility of metal ions from kaolin particles and stability of the dispersion. In most of the industrial applications of kaolin, highly concentrated slurries of controlled stability and fluidity are required. The solubility of kaolin particles in terms of aluminum and silicon ions and its effect on the stability of the slurry was investigated. The main objectives of this study were (1) to study the effect of the extracted metals on the properties and performance of the slurry, (2) to understand the reaction mechanism of dissolution of metals from kaolin, and (3) to understand the interaction mechanism of dispersants with kaolin particles. The controlling variables were dispersant dosage, slurry pH, solids loading, and aging.

The main objective of this work was to quantitatively investigate exhaust emission levels relative to maintenance (service) intervals during the operation of diesel-powered equipment at an underground bauxite mine in Greece. Such emissions depend on a great number of parameters, including the type of engine (technology) and its tuning, the type of work performed (as related to the engine workload), the suggested maintenance intervals, the altitude, the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere in the underground mine, the properties of the fuel and the operator's training and experience levels. The necessary ventilation quantities were calculated based on exhaust gas-concentration measurements and site-specific relationships between pollutants and adjusted air-quality indices. Diagrams comparing the necessary and recommended airflow for several equipment groups, featuring two engine types and different maintenance intervals, are presented.

This paper reviews the sources, production, and technology of gold in South Africa. First of al it details the geographical distribution of gold-bearing materials, together with the mineralogy and distribution of gold within those materials. It goes on to the geological origins, and to the discovery and early exploitation, of the gold deposits. The laws relating to the mining and disposal of the metal are explained, after which an outline is given of gold exploration, processing, and refining. The economics of gold production are discussed briefly, and it is concluded that, although present expertise in the financial and technological aspects of a gold-mining venture have largely reduced the risks involved, one severe risk remains: that the rate of cost inflation will not be matched by the rate of escalation in the gold price.

The behaviour of cationic and anionic collector mixtures in the feldspar-quartz flotation system has been investigated througl conductivity, surface tension, zeta-potential and flotation studies. Tht results show the formation of molecular complexes between oppositel; charged collector ions through charge neutralisation. The bioleaching of mineral sulfide pulps in a bench-scale rotating-drum reactor was studied. The reactor contained horizontal paddles on the inner wall for lifting the mineral pulp. The performance of the reactor was tested by bioleaching a refractory pyritic gold concentrate in the presence of pure Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (ATCC 19859). The concentrate was efficiently bioleached at a 50% pulp density with the drum operating at from 0.5 to 1.0 rpm. Attempts at bioleaching the concentrate at the same pulp density used in a conventional stirred reactor showed severe inhibition of bacterial activity. The results demonstrated that the drum reactor allows the process to operate at much higher pulp densities than conventional stirred-tank reactors. This results in improved bacterial activity because of better attrition control of the mineral particles.
