THE only oil produced in Colombia during the past year has been that from the Tropical Oil Co. concession, operated by the International Petroleum Co. This has been about the same in amount as that of 1923, or approximately half a million barrels gross, which has been used to supply the domestic requirements of the republic and for the company's own use, in about equal proportions. The Tropical Oil Co.'s field at Infantas has 17 producing wells, for the most part shut in. The company claims an average initial production of about 1000 bbl. each for these wells, which would represent a total potential production of 10,000 bbl. However, the area already outlined by this work is considerable, as drilling has apparently been carried on with the idea in mind of blocking out the field, rather than developing the greatest possible production. Therefore, whether or not the pipeline of the Andian National Corpn. is being built to take care of the amount of crude production admitted by the Tropical Oil Co., or a greater prospective amount, it is certain that this production could be quickly increased if desired.

The great potential of Brazil for the agricultural production makes our country a generator of agro industrial residues. In this context, the solid-state fermentation appears as a technology that shows alternative ways for those residues, adding values to these raw materials, through the production of substances of industrial interest, besides reducing the possible environmental problems. The main objective of this study was to apply the bovine fat residue associated to the garden grass for the fungal lipase production. Initially, 75 microbial cultures were isolated from garden grass samples after incubation of the mixture with bovine fat. From these cultures were selected the filamentous fungi, whose lipase production abilities were evaluated. The isolation and the selection were accomplished by using a differential culture medium containing Tween 80 as inducer substrate of lipase production. The colonies with lipolytic potential were detected by the presence of white precipitation haloes on the agar. With agro industrial residues the best lipase producer fungus was identified as Penicillium sp in 6 days of solid state fermentation. The crude enzyme obtained was tested in transesterification process for the biodiesel production.

A frequency distribution model plays a fundamental role in ore evaluation, especially for the feasibility study of new deep gold mines. The geological complexity of the reefs being mined at present in the Witwatersrand basin poses some difficulties regarding the modeling of the underlying ore-value distribution. This geological complexity has given rise to a need for more applicable distributional models. This paper places the geology of the Witwatersrand basin in perspective and draws some important conclusions from the genesis of the deposition. In addition to the three-parameter lognormal model, two more-general distributional models are proposed. These are the compound lognormal (CLD) and log-generalized inverse Gaussian (LN-GIG) distributions. A detailed, although preliminary, comparative study of these two more-general models with the three-parameter lognormal model is described, and the efficiencies of the estimates and modeling are analysed. It is found that the broad assumption that gold grades follow a three-parameter lognormal law is not always the case, and the need to test for departures from log normality should be emphasized so as to ensure the use of appropriate models.

At a meeting of the Associated Engineers, with Columbia Section in charge, a discussion of the metric system was led by-Mr. F. A. Ross. While the majority of the engineers present favored resolutions seeking compulsory adoption and use of the system at the end of 1924 it was believed the engineers present should not undertake to speak for the entire membership and upon suggestion of Mr. J. B. Fisken the resolutions were laid over to be acted upon at a later meeting. The resolutions are as follows: WHEREAS the Great War has drawn the United States into a permanent and close relationship with the other nations of the world and opened the way to an unlimited foreign trade; and WHEREAS more than-70 per cent. of all nations have discarded their arbitrary standards of weights and measures and have made the use of the decimal, or metric, system obligatory; and WHEREAS the United States still clings to an antiquated, complex, cumbersome, and wholly illogical system of weights and measures, consisting of a duodecimal and fractional arrangement of arbitrary units, instead of definitely determined and correlated units following the decimal system; and

Meeting of June 26, 1914.-The President was authorized to appoint Advisory Committees to co operate with the United States Bureau of Mines. The President announced the appointment of Edward H. Benjamin and W. C. Ralston as additional members of the Committee on Arrangements for the San Francisco meeting, 1915. H. T. Van Ells and Judd Stewart were appointed to represent the Institute on a joint committee of several technical societies to consider the standardization of graphical methods for the presentation of statistics. The President announced the appointment of H. Foster Bain to succeed Edward H. Benjamin, resigned, on the Committee of Management of the International Engineering Congress, 1915. The Secretary was authorized to issue a new circular advertising the sale of back Transactions and to sell back Transactions, bound in cloth, at a price of $35 for 46 volumes, provided sufficient orders were received to warrant the special binding. The sum of $177.50 was contributed to the San Francisco Local Section. Upon recommendation of the Committee on Membership, 70 Members, 4 Associate Members and 7 Junior Members were elected to their respective classes; there was also one change of status from Junior Member to Member.

Manual charging of long upward drilled holes in mines is a heavy and risky job today. Mechanization of this work has been requested for some time by miners, their supervisors, industrial safety organizations and the trade unions, all of whom are interested in improving the working environment. This paper presents newly-developed charging systems intended primarily for charging in connection with sublevel caving and sloping. These systems have been field-tested during 1977 in the LKAB mines in northern Sweden. The results of these field tests and the results of laboratory work conducted to help eliminate the risks involved in charging explosives are also discussed. The equipment being tested (see fig. 1 and 2) consists of a charging vehicle with articulated steering, the PT-60, which has been equipped with a hose feed system mounted on the hydraulic extension boom. From a sheltered position, the operator brings the detonator and primer to the hole opening, after which the hose is pushed in mechanically to the end of the hole. Measuring equipment indicates when and if the end of the blasthole is reached. The operator then withdraws the hose mechanically as charging takes place.

The Vienna Wood hydrothermal is hosted by mid-oceanic ridge type basalt in graben morphology and is located in the Central Manus Basin. The hydrothermal field is about 300 metres in diameter and consist of a sulphide mounds and tall huge death and active chimneys. From the three distinct ore types collected from the Vienna Wood site, the dominant ore minerals recognised are pyrite, wurtzite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, Fe-oxide and gangue minerals of anhydrite, gypsum, barite and silica. The consistencies in the paragenetic sequence and in the spatial distribution of the sulfides across the three ore types suggest that similar hydrothermal process exist across active and death chimneys. Fluid inclusion studies reveal a homogenisation temperature of 190-260¦C and an average salinity of 5.1-5.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. The pH of the hydrothermal fluid ranges from 4.2 to 6.1. Bulk chemical analyses indicate that the mineralisation in the Vienna Wood can be classified into the Zn-(Cu-Pb) type of mineralisation. The tenors of the ore and mineral assemblage resemble those of the Mid-oceanic ridge system and ancient ophiolite hosted massive sulphide deposits of Cyprus and Oman.

Development of computer-based information systems is predicated on the merger of rapidly developing computer technology and growing managerial demands for information. The focus of this section is on managing the development and implementation of information systems for the 1980's. It is the experience of the majority of contributors to this volume that among unresolved problems of major dimensions in a mineral organization are those of managing the computer-based information systems resource itself. There are three major reasons for this: (1) mineral information systems are relatively new to the senior management of a mining company or a mineral organization; (2) problems are compounded by a developing technology, a new type of personnel with a changing experience/education mix; and (3) an organizational structure and location which, in many organizations, are still being examined. The three authors in this section present aspects of managing the information systems function which, based on their experience, are common to the solution of the problem. The premise that the information systems function has been placed appropriately within the entire business plan of the firm has been made by the authors in their discussion of the various aspects of the management process.

At the Morning mine of American Smelting & Refining Co. it was particularly important that there be a means of signaling the engineer from the moving cage in the shaft. Because of the shifting ground in which the shaft was located, buckling timber made it extremely difficult to keep a continuous bell line serviceable. In 1930 engineers considered a moving contact pantograph arrangement between the cage and two stationary messenger wires strung on insulators in the shaft compartment next to the cage. The idea was abandoned because falling material in the shaft and speed of hoisting made it difficult to maintain communication. Later in 1934 a manufacturing company was consulted about the use of an electric eye or a radio signal. As the shaft was located in a return air stream of nearly 100 pct relative humidity, there was too much fog for the electric eye to be used. The radio signal was considered, and it was believed feasible to generate electric static on the cage, locating a radio receiver at the top of the shaft, but the manufacturing company's research department was too busy to work on it at that time.

Since startup of the Syncrude Canada Ltd. (SCL) oil sands facility in northern Alberta 15 years ago, numerous improvements have been made in the ore conveying system and equipment. The unique nature of the material conveyed coupled with the wide range of environmental conditions encountered results in a number of unparalleled challenges. Most of the improvements have been brought about through the use of detailed field evaluation. Numerous publications are available that detail the various aspects of conveyor technology, and a significant list of papers are presented each year adding to the knowledge in this field. In the area of power formulae in the mid- 1970s, there were two major sources for use in the design of the SCL conveyors: the Conveyor Equipment Manufactures Association Handbook, 1988, and DIN Specifications 22101: Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials, 1982. These sources were supplemented by the knowledge of the belt and conveyor equipment vendors and from the general literature. The SCL design was based on the CEMA formula. Tunnelling with hydraulic drills has been a success in Norway. In the fall of 1976 excavation of tunnels for the development of the Aabjoera scheme was started. Two and a half years later a total of 25 kilometers of tunnels are completed. During the most busy period 5 rigs with hydraulic drills were in operation. GENERAL INFORMATION. Aabjoera Hydro Electric Plant is located in the central part of Norway (Fig. 1). The scheme covers a mountaineous area between the Tosen Fiord and the valley of Namdalen. Water from the area of precipitation is transferred through 5 tunnels to the main reservoir. From here the water is conducted via a 10 km long, unlined supply tunnel down to the Kolsvik power station. The power station is situated underground with a short tailrace tunnel out in the fiord. Average head of water is 507 m. The Aabjoera plant is jointly owned by Helgeland Kraftlag A/S, 8650 Mosjøen and Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk, 7700 Steinkjer. The Civil Engineering Division of the latter company has acted as Consulting Engineers for the scheme. General contractors for the whole scheme has been Ing. F. Selmer A/S, Box 6035, Etterstad, Oslo 6.

At the Zinc & Lead'95 symposium, one of the authors presented several modifications of Pb-Ag-Ca alloy anodes for the zinc electrowinning process, and also, the behavior of some organic additives in the electrolyte. In this study, the mechanical properties of the electrode materials composed by Pb-0.5 wt% Ag-(0~0.8) wt% Ca were studied by the tensile and Vickers hardness methods. Furthermore, experimental research on the influence of rolling and annealing treatments on the electrolytic behavior and mechanical properties of these alloys was carried out. The tensile strengths of the annealed Pb-0.5 wt% Ag-(0.1-0.8) wt% Ca alloys were the same or higher than those of the as-cast Pb-0.9 wt% Ag alloy. The anode potential using the as-cast Pb-0.5 wt% Ag-0.6 wt% Ca alloy decreased compared to the as-cast Pb-0.9 wt% Ag alloy. Moreover, the annealed Pb-0.5 wt% Ag - 0.6 wt% Ca anode after rolling showed a lower anode potential than the as-cast Pb-0.5 wt% Ag - 0.6 wt% Ca anode.

Changes in the thermal-oxidation behavior and other properties of gold-bearing waste activated carbon when milled in both a ball mill and a vibratory mill were investigated. It was found that significant changes occurred in the oxidation temperature of the vibration-milled waste carbon as a result of increases in surface area and mechano-chemical activation. The mechano-chemical action brought about modifications in the crystal structure of the waste carbon. As a result, the vibration-milled sample was completely oxidized at a temperature of 450°C. Thus, the study established that vibration milling is a better way of lowering the temperature of oxidation of the waste carbon. Furthermore, the gold was found to be concentrated in the ash and, when leached with cyanide for 20 hrs, the gold recoveries from a sample having a head grade of 2 kg/t was 99.5% for the vibration-milled sample and 82% for the ball-milled sample. The lower gold recovery for the ball-milled sample was attributed to sintering of the ash, which was caused by the higher temperature required for its oxidation.

6.1 Summary This report deals with the investigation carried out to select, test, and implement a method of evaluating coal deposits and reserves. Cognizance is taken of the inherent characteristics of coal and the legislation covering aspects of health, safety, environment, and ecology applicable to the coal mining industry. Further, the method is computerized and provides information that is meaningful and readily available to other programs and sub¬systems within the concept of the Master Design Simulator. The Geology and Reserves Sub-system interface with the total system is provided by a geological data library which is structured to hold and make accessible all the data required by the system. The output from the program is accurate and useful to users with a wide variety of computer experience, knowledge, hardware and storage capacity. The sub-system is designed to function as a separate unit or an integral part of the total system and, there¬fore, an interface to or with the system has been established. This discussion will present a case study in developing solutions to a metropolitan quarryÆs public relations, legal, environmental, and productivity problems. It details an extensive and detailed project to address the blasting practice in a medium sized quarry that is surrounded by residential and industrial zones. The principle work was done over four months duration during the normal production season. It included detailed drilling and blasting audits for baseline information. In addition, geologic characterisation, seismic modeling, correction of deviations from best practices, and implementation and monitoring of precise electronic timing to provide dramatic solutions for the quarry. The quarry is in the near suburbs of a large metropolitan city. It is framed on two sides by residential municipalities and on two sides by industrial zones. At the start of the project, the quarry was in court as a result of the lawsuit by one of the neighboring towns that was suing to close the quarry. The lawsuit had progressed to the advanced stage where in the Judge had appointed an arbitrator to make the decision of continued operation. This arbitrator was to observe our progress and recommend to the Judge the disposition of the case.

One of the most important decisions in mine development is the selection of the mining method. Open pit or underground methods are selected depending on the shape of the deposit, and its position with respect to the surface. When the decision is not clear or evident, then the common rule is to compare underground and open pit projects to choose the one which yields the maximum return. However, in some circumstances' the best alternative is to start-up the operation with an open pit until a point where mine operating costs make more convenient to employ an underground method. In this case, the final pit limit is not directly related with commodity prices and its position is a funtion of capital and operating costs associated with both methods. The goal of this paper is a mans of establishing the proper ultimate pit considering a potential underground mine. The methodology is quite simple and can be implemented to work with a variety of available routines for pit optimization, such as Lerchs-Grossmann, floating cone, network flow and the Lemieux moving cone optimizing algorithm, which is the tool used by the author.

Micro-crack formation zones developed near a crack tip in rocks and ceramics play a significant role in fracture behavior of these materials. In order to study micro- crack formation near a crack tip and its effects on crack behavior, a mica-epoxy composite material was developed. Multi-layer mica flakes were embedded in an epoxy matrix. Under high stress in the vicinity of a crack tip the mica delaminated, simulating the micro-cracking along grain boundaries or crystal planes in rocks and ceramics. A compact tension specimen was fabricated from mica-epoxy composite material. During the test the load and crack opening displacement were measured following the ASTM E561 (R-curve determination) procedure. Through the compliance calibration method the effective crack length and the KR were computed. The experiment clearly demonstrates the formation of micro-cracks and their effects on the overall behavior of the specimen. The paper discusses the significance of micro-crack formation on fracture toughness characterizations, and the advantages of the use of mica-epoxy composite for detailed studies of interaction between the micro-crack formation zone and the specimen geometry and size.

The ability of voids, microballoons, and even solids to sensitize explosives has been known and used for many years. This phenomenon has generally been studied and reported under the terminology of "hot spots" because of the increase in local pressure and temperature when a shock wave encounters such sensitizers. A method for treating this phenomenon in detonation theory or in a detonation model has been studied for almost the same length of time. Perhaps because of the complexity and non-linearity of the void, or microballoon collapse, several of these studies have used the expediency of including additional terms in the burn rate law to account for the influence of hot spots. The detonation model proposed here considers the sensitization due to discontinuities in the shock impedance to be a mechanical phenomenon to be accounted for in the mechanical equations governing the detonation and not in the burn rate law. While this is not a new contention, the method for handling this non-linear phenomenon within the proposed model is new. The model also includes a method which accounts for the manufacturing variables of emulsion matrix cell size, microballoon size and type, as well as energetic additives.

KIRCHEN, FREDERICK BRADSHAW, C. B. LAKENAN, TASKER L. ODDIE. The formation of the Nevada Section was originally suggested by Professor F. C. Lincoln, who had discussed the subject with Mr. William L. Saunders when the latter was President of the Institute. Professor Lincoln sought the assistance of the Nevada Mine Operators' Association, whose Executive Committee constituted itself a Committee on Organization, and authority for the establishment of a Nevada Section to include the entire State was secured from the Board of Directors of the Institute. The formal installation took place at 10 A.M. on May 18, Mr. William L. Saunders officiating. The Honorable Emmet D.. Boyle, Governor of Nevada (and a member of the Nevada Section), made the address of welcome.
