MELTING is the initial step in the fabricating of all aluminum and aluminum-alloy products. Its function may be considered as threefold: to improve the metal quality, to adjust the composition, and to change the form to that required for subsequent fabrication. Because the melting operation is generally somewhat removed from the final product fabrication, its importance is frequently overlooked. Melting equipment and melting procedures can reflect materially on fabricating procedures as well as on quality and cost of final product. The selection of equipment and the establishment and control of melting procedures, therefore, should be given careful consideration. It is the purpose of this paper to present the various factors that should be considered in establishing melting procedures and in selecting melting equipment. Certain of these are the result of the inherent characteristics of aluminum and can be treated rather specifically. Others depend on the particular production requirements and hence will have to be considered more generally. This paper is intended to cover only the melting of solids, as differentiated from fines, such as borings, turnings, and sawdust. The melting of fines, in many respects, is a subject that should be treated by itself, and practices for melting fines are by no means as standardized as are those for melting solids. The melting of fines is today the subject of considerable developmental interest; hence practices discussed today may soon be replaced by new or improved ones. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE METAL THAT AFFECT MELTING Aluminum and aluminum alloys possess several inherent characteristics that affect the melting problem. Of the physical properties, density, heat content, thermal conductivity, emissivity, and melting temperatures are important because of their effect on equipment design. A list of such properties for commercially pure aluminum is given in Table r, compared with similar properties for iron and copper. The low density of aluminum as well as of the aluminum alloys is of material advantage in the design of melting equipment, in that such equipment can be considerably lighter than similar equipment for handling the heavier metals. The density, however, particularly of the molten metal, is not greatly different from that of the oxides and other nonmetallic materials that develop or become part of the melt during the melting process. Separation of such nonmetallics is not as rapid a process as with some of the other metals, and consideration of this must be made in establishing melting procedures. Sufficient holding time to permit such materials to separate out and, in some cases, fluxing treatments to aid the separation, are required. WITH the papers of Palmer and Smith1 and of Burghoff and Bohlen,2 published in 1942, understanding of the problem of the development of ears on deep-drawn brass cups was brought to the point where, from a practical standpoint, producers of brass sheet could keep earing under control. However, these very practical results raised questions concerning the reasons for the observed behavior. Since plastic deformation is fundamentally a function of crystallographic slip, these reasons must be considered in the light of the textures to be found in the annealed sheet. Various attempts have been made to interpret the mechanism of ear formation by correlation with the preferred orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. However, none of these has satisfactorily explained why ears are usually found in the rolling and transverse directions for copper but at 45° to these directions for brass. This paper offers additional data on these two related subjects and has been divided into two sections. The first section provides a survey of the recrystallization textures of brass as affected by annealing temperatures and prior reductions, and an account of the earing behavior which accompanies these textures. The second section reports new data on the anisotropy that accompanies a characteristic texture for brass and endeavors with partial success to establish the factors that account for the difference in earing behavior between copper and brass. EARING BEHAVIOR OF BRASS Review of Textures The recrystallization texture of severely rolled brass was first reported by Bass and Glocker.3 The preferred orientation to which this texture, obtained from metal annealed at 500°C., was most akin was (113)[112]. This texture has been confirmed by Bauer, von Göler and Sachs;4 Brick;* Brick, Martin and Angier;6 and Cook and Richards7 who, in general, used annealing temperatures under 500°C. Bass and Glocker3 also reported the recrystallization texture at 850°C. to be the same as at 500°C. They analyzed their textures by means of single photograms obtained with white radiation. The photograms for both temperatures are reproduced in their paper, and there is a strong similarity between the two. However, for the latter temperature, the number of spots registered on the film was remarkably large for the grain size to be expected, and the authors made no mention of using a technique that would integrate a large enough area of the specimen to produce so many spots. "Selected methods of pressure loss predictions in horizontal slurry flow in pipelines are presented. For a given combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, the slurry and its flow conditions are described, and an appropriate method of pressure loss prediction is outlined. The wide range of conditions treated in this paper may be found in practice in areas varying from the hydraulic transport of low concentration slurries to dense-phase conveying of paste backfill in underground mines.IntroductionThe hydraulic conveying of solid particles in pipelines is a major component of the mining and mineral processing industry. Whether the objective is to transport ore to the processing plant or to make use of mill tailing as backfill material; the need for well designed, economical hydraulic conveying systems is recognized.The contribution of this paper is part of an on-going research program at McGill University involved in optimizing and developing techniques for total mine waste disposal. One of the main concerns in the conveying of solid-liquid mixtures is the prior knowledge of the pumping power input required. This energy requirement is directly proportional to the pressure losses incurred in the pipeline system. Understanding the sources of such pressure losses and predicting their magnitudes should enable the system designer to make informed decisions regarding the optimum mode of hydraulic transportation commensurate with the over-all requirements of the operation.This paper is an attempt to classify pressure loss prediction methods encountered in the literature for solid-liquid mixtures. In spite of the large number of publications spanning thirty years of research in the field of slurry transportation, it is sometimes difficult to correctly identify the appropriate methods applicable to a given situation. This is partly due to the inherent complexity of the mechanics of slurry flow and the ensuing uncertainty about the nature of the flow regime under investigation.Our approach is to use three fundamental parameters, namely: flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size (for solid particles with a given density) to characterize the slurry and the flow conditions, and to match them with an adequate pressure loss prediction method. For each combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, a description of the most likely prevalent flow conditions and some known methods of dealing with them will be presented. Qualitative definitions of ""high"" and ""low"" magnitudes of the aforementioned parameters will be given as a general guide to the classification scheme presented in this paper."

"Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have advocated the use of instrumentation in underground mine ground control studies to aid in understanding failure mechanisms and to calibrate numerical models. The purpose of these efforts is to reduce accidents and fatalities in underground mines resulting from inadequate design of mining layout or supports. A recent examination of some results of stress change measurement raised some questions about the validity of elastic solutions in ground, such as coal. Particularly under deep cover as is prevalent in the western United States, the coal around a borehole would likely have yielded so that post-yield behavior would govern the response of the instrument.A numerical experiment was conducted by NIOSH researchers using the FLAC software (Itasca Consulting Group, 2016) to investigate the response of the borehole pressure cell (BPC) and the biaxial stressmeter to varying degrees of plastic behavior. The pre-encapsulated BPC cell pressure exhibits increasing departure from the elastic case with decreasing post-peak-strength slope of the stress-strain curve. On the other hand, because the BSM usually provides much more confinement to the surrounding rock than does the BPC, the measurements obtained from the BSM do not depart significantly from the changes in secondary principal stresses and directions as calculated by the elastic solution.INTRODUCTIONSeveral years ago, Larson et al. (2000) described several instruments that NIOSH had used in underground field studies and how to monitor them with dataloggers. This information is still relevant because of the need to understand how excavation affects the stability of mines and thus, the safety of mining personnel. One class of instruments described in that paper includes those instruments that measure change in rock stress. Although several such instruments might be used to measure stress change, the focus of this paper is on two instruments with which NIOSH has had more recent experience—the borehole pressure cell (BPC) (Geokon, 2018a; RST Instruments, 2018) and the biaxial stressmeter (BSM) (Geokon, 2018b). Other instruments, such as the CSIRO hollow inclusion stress cell (HICell) (Earth Sciences, 2019; Worotnicki and Walton, 1976) may be included in future studies.Early studies in the development of the BPC were those of Panek and Stock (USBM, 1964), Sellers (1970), Lu (1984), and Babcock (1986). Babcock’s work is particularly useful, but his setting and testing range was far below what we experienced in the NIOSH study, and it was Babcock’s data reduction scheme from his laboratory experiments that was used to calculate stress change in the NIOSH study (NIOSH, 2019a)."

A pulverized coal fired power plant is being built in Osceola, Arkansas, along the Mississippi River. The subsurface soil conditions consist of a certain amount of very soft clayey silt and clay underlain with a medium dense sand layer and a dense sand layer. The site has been raised four to five feet with fill material consisting of sand and gravel. Consolidation settlement due to the fill is expected to cause negative shaft resistance (downdrag) on the pile foundations. The site is located in a high seismic hazard area - the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). The liquefaction analyses indicated that there is a high liquefaction potential in the medium dense sand layer. Load tests are needed to determine the shaft resistance and the end bearing of each soil layer for design purpose. Two types of pile foundations ? augered pressure grouted displacement pile (APGD) and partial augered pressure grouted displacement pile (P-APGD) were considered for this project. Ten pile load tests, including five compression tests and five tension tests, were performed for three different areas. Strain gauges were installed for the compression tests. The APGD and P-APGD piles were installed side by side for comparison. In addition, three additional dynamic tests were performed to supplement the information from the static load tests. Load deflection curves for the compression tests were predicted, and the failure loads were interpreted using four different methods. The shaft resistance and the end bearing were determined from the strain gauge data and were used to back calculate the ultimate capacity. The back-calculated capacities are in good agreement with the predicted failure loads; they were further verified with the tension load test results.

The new committee is called the Environmental Control Committee. Such action was taken because of the importance of environmental control and the need for a more active role in this area by our Division.

This paper considers the heavy liquid laboratory tests used to determine the amenability of a potential ore to the heavy media process. The results of the laboratory testing are correlated to actual plant performance and establish design parameters for the heavy media process. Blasting in a development heading or breasting operations starts from a cut. The void created by the cut provides a free face for the remainder of the round. It is the most critical part of the round because the later firing charges cannot pull to the desired depth unless the cut comes out as planned. The Burn cut is most commonly used in Canadian mines.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

This paper discusses the application of a computerised model based on genetic algorithms (GAs), called GenRel, for reliability assessment of underground mine hoisting systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether GenRel can be applied to predict future failure data of a mine hoisting system based on historical records of failures. The incentive of selecting the GAs for prediction of failures is that GAs are a class of evolutionary algorithms which imitate the biological evolution procedures such as reproduction, selection, crossover and mutation. The reliability of mining equipment changes over time due to an array of factors (eg equipment age, the operating environment, number and quality of repair). These factors affect the equipment's failure patterns and have complex impacts on the equipment's reliability characteristics. The failure patterns are assumed to follow a biological evolution process, and thus GAs can be considered applicable in the modelling process.To conduct the reliability assessment, a study was carried out with historical failure data of hoists in the time period from January to December 2007. Two failure data sets of two mine hoisting systems were collected from two typical underground mines in Ontario, Canada, which are denoted as the NA mine and the SB mine. The failure data sets were prepared in the format of time between failures (TBF). Then, these data sets were entered in GenRel to generate predicted failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008. The paper discusses the statistical similarity of the actual failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008 with the predicted failure data set generated by GenRel in the same time period.

it is well known1 that racemic mixtures of optical isomers can be separated by passing their solutions through a column packed with r- or 1-quartz powder so that one of the isomers becomes adsorbed selectively on the asymmetric quartz surfaces. Although the natural occurrence of r- and 1-quartz is more or less equally distributed, some localities show enough deviations toward a higher proportion of l-quartz2 to suggest that optical isomerism might influence quartz flotation. Beta-amines have an asymmetric carbon atom, and therefore optical activity may be expected. Beta-amines are reported to behave quite differently from alpha-amines in the flotation upgrading of certain oxidized iron ores.3 It is of interest, for both practical and theoretical reasons, to determine whether or not optical isomerism plays a role in the amine flotation of quartz. In this article the results of Hallimond tube flotation tests and of adsorption measurements using d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on both r- and 1-quartz are compared. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was chosen for the tests because it is commercially available in optical isomers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Brazilian quartz crystals were hand-sorted according to the difference in trigonal trapezohedral faces, and each crystal was further checked by the Airy's spiral.4 The respective crystals were then crushed, and the -150 + 200-mesh fractions were screened out for the Hallimond tube tests. The samples were cleaned by brief leaching with warm, dilute hydrochloric acid, and then by repeated rinsing with distilled water. In preparation for the adsorption measurements, they were then dry-ground in a pebble mill for several hours, washed a few times with distilled water, and finally dried in a vacuum desiccator. By means of the Krypton gas adsorption method, the specific surfaces of r- and 1-quartz samples were determined to be 27,700 and 19,800 sq cm per gm respectively, the difference being due mainly to the decantation procedure rather than to the inherent difference in their grindability. D-beta-phenylisopropylamine was the only collector used in the study. It was solubilized by neutralizing with 110% of the stoichiometric requirement of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid. The specific rotation of the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was determined with a polari-meter using sodium D line to be, Although the d-beta-phenylis~prop~lamine showed absorption maxima in the wave length region of 250 to 270 millimicrons, due presumably to the phenyl group, these peaks were too sensitive to be used for colorimetric determination of the residual concentration in the adsorption measurements. The amine-picrate method, used in the colorimetric analysis of dodecylammonium chloride,' was found to work satisfactorily for the d-beta-phenylisopropylamine. The adsorption densities were thus determined after equilibrating 40 gm of the ground quartz sample with 300 ml of solution by tumbling in separate glass-stoppered Erlenmeyer flasks for one hour. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 presents the adsorption densities of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine on the r- and 1-quarts in the pH range of 6 to 7.5. In agreement with data reported in the literature, the adsorption density of d-beta-phenylisopropylamine was slightly higher on the r-quartz than on the 1-quartz, although the difference was not as pronounced as one might expect from the capacity of r-quartz and 1-quartz to separate racemic

MESA Corporation has completed a four-year program for the Bureau of Mines to develop a technique for measuring roof competence in underground coal mines. The preferred technique employs a tracer gas that is injected into a roof borehole drilled near the working face. The tracer gas performs the dual purpose of determining the pressure loss rate from the borehole and of marking the diffusion pattern of the the escaping gas. The primary detection technique relies upon observation of the rate of pressure drop in a hole drilled in the roof strata under test. If this measurement indicates a significant probability of roof collapse, the gas diffusion pattern is outlined with the Leak-gun tracer-gas detector. These two techniques provide a comprehensive method for predicting the relative probability of roof collapse in operating coal mines.

In the nickel extraction process at Nicaro, Cuba, dried and ground nickel bearing laterites are reduced at 1300-1400F in multiple-hearth furnaces. Nickel is leached from the reduced ore by aeration in an aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate. Nickel carbonate is precipitated from the liquor and calcined to yield nickel oxide. The following are the more important modifications of the Nicaro process since plant rehabilitation and expansion. Ten percent increase in tonnage was achieved without decreasing the fineness of the ore by minor mechanical modifications of the grinding plant. Another five percent increase in tonnage was attained by intentionally overloading the ore prepration and leaching circuits in an effort to control cobalt extraction. Modifications at the sintering plant allowed it to handle the entire output of the expanded plant. A fifty percent increase in leach liquor cooling facilities alone provided an increase in nickel production of five percent. Stronger fresh leach liquor for increased nickel washing efficiency was obtained through improved distribution of water to the ammonia absorption towers. Advantage was taken of the reduced calcine's capability to precipitate cobalt, and modifications in the leach liquor circulation provided controlled cobalt solubility with minimum harm to nickel extraction. Several process changes at the drying plant brought about a ten percent reduction in the fuel oil consumption at this pint. Controlled air addition to the reduction furnaces' upper hearths burned formerly wasted combustibles thereby reducing oil consumption by twenty percent. The nickel extraction process successfully emplayed on the extensive but lowgrade lateritic ores of Eastern Cuba at the U. S. Government owned Nicaro plant, has been previously described in various publications. The large mine and plant operated by the Nickel Processing Corporation, located on the northeastern shore of Oriente Province, have been recently expanded to a yearly capacity of about 50 million pounds of nickel. Essentially, the operation involves open pit mining of a limonite-serpentine ore mixture containing 1.3 to 1.4 percent nickel and 34 to 38 percent iron. The comparatively lumpy, wet (25 to 30 percent moisture) ore is first dried and ground prior to chemical treatment, to which the entire 7,000 tons per day feed must be subjected. In the initial chemical action the dried and ground ore is reduced with carbon manoxide and hydrogen at 1300-1400° in multiple-hearth furnaces. The Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government commissioned the design and construction of the West Kowloon Drainage Improvement, Stage 2, Phase 2, Kai Tak Transfer Scheme (KTTS) project in 2000 to relieve potential flooding in Mong Kok caused by the insufficient capacity of the existing storm water drainage system. The KTTS involves construction of a 1.5km,4.4m drainage tunnel and a 450m long box culvert, running from Waterloo Road near Hereford Road to the existing Kai Tak Nullah in San Po Kong. This paper describes the design and construction of; the bored tunnel through both hard rock and soft ground using a slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), six associated access shafts, a connection structure at Waterloo Road and the box culvert connecting the bored tunnel to the outfall at Kai Tak nullah. Details will be provided on the contractor’s alternative designs adopted during the contract including the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete as one-pass temporary and permanent support for three of the shafts and modifications to the Engineer’s design for the box culvert structure.

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives : 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity. Similarly, trade barriers, nationalization of industries, foreign exchange manipulations, taxation, monopolistic prac-
