Throughout the 2016/2017 financial year, the NSW Resources Regulator conducted an assessment of each underground metalliferous operation across the state to assess how each operation managed the principal mining hazard of ground and strata control. The assessment considered all aspects of the mining process, including all aspects of managing geotechnical risk within drawpoints. This assessment is ongoing and, therefore, this paper is limited to the first six mines assessed in the program.In 2015 there were three fatalities in and around underground drawpoints in Australian metalliferous mines. Whilst many of the systems of work around underground development are consistent across the industry, there are large discrepancies around how each underground mining operation manage the risks associated with drawpoints.For drawpoints to be effectively managed, their management needs to be considered at the earliest stages of the mine planning process. By using downholes and adopting remote systems of work – systems that are continuing to improve with technology – the risks drawpoints posed can be greatly reduced.The assessment by the NSW Resources Regulator revealed a number of common failings across the state in the management of the risks that drawpoints pose. The assessment also observed a number of innovative practices that particular operations have adopted in the wake of serious incidents occurring within drawpoints at their operation; however, these practices have not been communicated to other operations.It is hoped the learnings from the assessment can be considered by industry and reduce the risks drawpoints pose in underground metalliferous mines.CITATION:Hill, X, 2017. The effects of induced seismicity caused by mining activities are one of the main problems that the mining industry faces. Although it has been documented by countries with a great mining tradition (United States, Canada, Australia and Chile) for over a century, the problem has been intensified throughout the years due to the greater depths that mineral extraction reaches, where the stress levels and environmental conditions increase the possibility of a rockburst occurrence. Seismic events inside the mine cause important losses of human lives and infrastructure damage. To deal with this problem it is necessary to implement several kinds of safety protocols. For example, seismic indicators allow to identify, through the analysis of a set of seismic parameters -magnitude, energy, time, decay rate, among others-, periods of time when a seismic event of considerable magnitude is most likely to occur. The objective of this work is to use the frictional energy generated by a microearthquake inside the mine as a seismic indicator, linking it with the occurrence of large magnitude seismic events which are outer the background activity. Thus, we seek to determine the set of seismic parameters which allow the best performance of the frictional energy/heat indicator. In the present study, we considered magnitude, frictional energy, and time as seismic parameters to study the efficiency of the proposed indicator. The optimal set of parameters was determined using two different methodologies: accumulated thermal energy and alert bands. The Piece Skill Score and the Accuracy indexes were used to evaluate each set of parameters. Both approaches show a high rate of true positive and true negative hits. Furthermore, it was concluded that both methods show complementary results in terms of the detection of critical events (Mw > 3.0).

In the summer of 2016 Xcel Energy experienced a storm event that resulted in the collapse of approximately 8.5 miles of a 345 KV transmission line near Rogers, Minnesota. In design of the new transmission line, Xcel Energy determined that ten tower locations would be replaced with steel H-frame structures supported by helical piles instead of wood H-frame structures supported by driven wooden piles. A steel foundation was proposed for the towers due to time constraints and site conditions unfavorable to large pile driving equipment. Xcel Energy contacted the helical pile manufacturer Hubbell Power Systems, Inc. (HPS) for aid in the design of a complete steel foundation for the structure legs. With the shear, moment, and axial loads provided, the manufacturer used pile group modeling and axial capacity software to design a four helical pile group; and used 3D modeling and finite element software to design a moment resistant grillage to connect to the tower base. The steel grillage utilizes a new moment resistant connection and clamp system to transfer loads from the piles to the grillage. This connection provides a true fixed head condition and reduces lateral deflection issues typical to smaller diameter piles in pinned head connections. The clamp is designed to deform the helical pipe pile shaft and transfer the full axial load of the structure through the mechanical and friction connection. The helical piles and the moment resistant grillage were manufactured with shorter than average lead times and a helical pile installation contractor performed the installation. An expedient plan of install was developed by the contractor that resulted in an average installation rate of one complete set of tower foundations per day. The design of the moment resistant grillage, clamping system, and excellent foundation construction by the contractor provided an expedient and efficient foundation system to be discussed in this paper.

Coal is the principal energy source for the American Electric Power System (AEP System), which generates and delivers more electric energy to its customers within a seven-state area than any other investor- owned electric public utility. The company expected to burn 21.5 million tons of coal in 1968 at its coal-fired, steam-electric generating stations. About 4.3 million tons, representing 20% of the firm's total annual requirement, was the expected yield of its captive coal mines; the other 17.2 million tons were to be purchased from commercial mines in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. American Electric's largest captive coal mining operation is conducted by Central Ohio Coal Co., a subsidiary of Ohio Power Co., at the Muskingum mine in the Meigs Creek No. 9 coal field of southeastern Ohio. The mine was started in 1953 to produce the coal requirements of the Philo and Muskingum River generating plants of Ohio Power Co., and it has been supplying their annual requirements in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 million tons since that time. The Muskingum River plant is one of the major steam-electric generating stations on the AEP System. This plant began operation in 1953 with a 215-megawatt unit and now has five generating units with a total plant capacity of 1,495 megawatts. The addition of the 615-megawatt Unit 5 in the summer of 1968 increased the total annual coal requirement of the plant from 2.6 to 4.4 million tons. In order to produce the additional 1.8 million tons of coal for the Unit 5 addition and to exploit the remaining coal reserves at the Muskingum mine most economically, Central Ohio Coal Co. has undertaken a $41 million expansion and modernization program, involving the world's largest dragline and an electric railroad.

The Miami mine is located near the town of Miami, Gila County, Arizona. The Miami mine started mining in 1910 and finished in July, 1959. The orebody was divided and mined as follows: Tons High Grade 24,400,000 - Top slicing, sub-level caving, etc. Low Grade 105,100,000 - Block caving Mixed ore 9,800,000 - " Low Grade #2 13,100,000 - " Total Mining 152,400,000 GEOLOGY Ore minerals are largely in pre-Cambrian Pinal schist intruded by tertiary Schultz granite porphyry and covered to some extent by Quarternary Gila conglomerate. The structures are highly faulted and shattered. The Miami fault on the east cuts off the ore and the Pinto fault on the southwest caused re-oxidation of enriched sulphides producing mixed ore. MINERALOGY The chief mineral is chalcocite, with chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, malachite, azurite, chrysocola, cuprite, native copper, and molybdenite as minor minerals. The ore minerals occur in seams, veinlets and disseminated particles. In block caving there is always some dilution, and drawing of ore stops when the grade drops past an economical point. This results in a small amount of copper left in the stopes below the capping. There is some copper in the capping, probably below 0.03% or less than 0.6 lbs. per ton. Over the low grade #2 orebody and portions of the high grade there was an oxide capping which was not mined. The crushed pilars are another source of copper. The leaching at Miami is an attempt to recover this last remaining copper of a worked-out mine. The enrichment at the Miami mine had gone more nearly to completion than most ore bodies in the southwest. There is practically no pyrite in the capping and very little in the ore.

INCREASING attention has been given in the last decade to the possibilities of mine leasing in the West. The practice as described in this article does not refer to the leasing of entire properties for corporate operation. It is intended to deal rather with the advantages and problems incident to leasing portions of properties to individuals who themselves, individually or in groups, do the actual mining and transportation of the ore. These individuals are sometimes called "leasers" and sometimes called "tributors." The contracts under which they work set up an independent relationship of lessor and leaser, between themselves and the mineowner or operator. This relationship has many advantages to both sides over those created by the ordinary relationship of employer and employe. From the standpoint of the owners there is no liability on independent contractors for industrial injuries, social security taxes, unemployment taxes, or the manifold restrictions of the Federal Labor Relations and Wage Hour Acts and similar state acts where they exist. As the leaser's income depends on the quantity and quality of ore produced, there is a distinct incentive for maximum production of a good grade of ore. This in turn promotes careful mining of the areas under lease. Ordinarily in mining, labor cost is a high percentage of the total cost of operation. Under a leasing system, even if the leasers be allowed to retain half of the gross values that they produce, and the owner or operator gets half, in the case of marginal ore bodies this is ordinarily more than the lessor would realize if the property were worked by day labor. "The property owned by the Lamaque Mining Company comprises a group of forty-four claims and fractions occupying an area of about 2,458 acres, in west-central Bourlamaque township, Abitibi county, Quebec. It is on ,the outskirts of the towns of Bourlamaque and Val d'Or, about 70 miles east of Noranda, near the eastern end of the belt of greenstones of Keewatin and Timiskaming age that extends eastward through Kirkland Lake into northwestern Quebec, terminating in Haig and Jurie townships 40 miles to the east.The claims on which the orebodies occur were first staked in 1923; No. 3 vein was discovered the following year. The original discovery was made by R. Clark in 1923. This was a small quartz vein containing a pocket of coarse gold on the north side of a hill near the northwestern corner of block 3. It is said that all the gold was removed in one shot in blasting into the vein; elsewhere it was barren. A picket line was then run west along the strike of the vein, which occupied a narrow shear zone, and about 2,000 feet west, in prospecting on either side of the picket line, a large boulder of quartz and tourmaline containing visible gold was found. This led to more intensive prospecting by trenching in the vicinity with the result that the No. 3, or 'float' vein, about 250 feet north of the boulder, was found. Due to low ground this vein was exposed in only one trench. The only other important vein found on the surface was the No. 1, or H, vein, which was exposed in several places by stripping and trenching, but it did not carry appreciable amounts of gold."

The Waterview Connection will provide a high-quality strategic alternative to State Highway One and complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route connecting State Highways 20 and 16. The project includes twin three-lane motorway tunnels 2.4 km long and 13.1 m internal diameter (ID). The tunnel construction started in November 2013 using the tenth largest earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world. The tunnels will pass beneath urban and greenfield areas as well as a major local arterial road. The project is being delivered by an alliance of constructors, designers and the New Zealand Transport Agency. This paper describes some of the key innovative and cost saving design solutions that have been achieved through collaboration in the alliance environment with the construction team, owner’s verifier, the segmental lining precast suballiance and the M&E suballiance for the underground works. The key design elements of the tunnel comprise a three-lane roadway, invert culvert and backfill, precast segmental lining, sixteen mined cross passages including a low point sump cross passage and steel segments for opening to the cross passages. This paper reviews interdisciplinary design integration and the economies achieved in the permanent works tunnel lining design, including reduction in lining thickness and optimising reinforcement, cross passage separation of 150 m, efficient design of the invert culvert and backfill design, main drainage pipe and low point sump. It is not the purpose of this report to try to describe all the work done during the past year for the improvement of health or the prevention of illness among miners , but to call attention to a few of the more outstanding investigations in which progress has been made . Among these , the investigations on the physiological effects of carbon monoxide , dust and ventilation , and temperature and humidity will be discussed . Carbon Monoxide . During the years 1920 and 1921 , much more work has been done on the various A survey phases of carbon monoxide than has been carried on for a number of years . of carbon monoxide poisoning in the American steel works , metal mines , and coal He conmines was made by Dr. Henry S. Forbes , of the Harvard Medical School . ** cludes from his survey that late after- symptoms following acute severe gassing rarely occur , and that almost always there is evidence of pre - existing pathological conditions when such effects do appear . He further states that he found no evidence of cumulative harmful effects resulting from frequent exposure . Dr. Forbes , Dr. Forbes , assisted by Louise Hompe , made a laboratory investigation in which anesthetized animals were exposed to carbon monoxide , illuminating gas , and benzol *** . The investigators conclude that , under the conditions of their experiments , there is no change in the coagulation time of the blood . It has been stated by many investigators that the blood of those affected by carbon monoxide does not clot as quickly as normal blood . While the investigation referred to above may not cover all the conditions , it is a valuable contribution to the subject as it indicates that the small hemorrhages found in the membranes covering the central nervous system , abdominal organs , etc. , at autopsy of those dying of carbon monoxide poisoning is probably not due to direct toxic action of the gas upon the blood .

"In this article, we describe a combined experimental and computational program to study the filling of automotive wheels during low pressure die casting. Experiments are performed by placing thermocouples into the mold walls of a production caster for the Ford F 113 wheel to measure the temperature profiles in the die during processing, and to infer the filling pattern. Computational models are also developed using a 36° section of the wheel pattern, taken directly from CAD data files. We use these models to simulate the filling and heat transfer processes. Comparison between experimental and computational results are presented, demonstrating the viability of this procedure.IntroductionAutomotive companies are using increasing amounts of aluminum in production vehicles: While the main driving force is improved fuel economy through weight reduction, replacing steel wheels by aluminum also offers the potential for improved vehicle performance by reducing unsprung mass. For these reasons, many new vehicles are now supplied with cast aluminum alloy wheels, and the aftermarket for these wheels continues to grow.The most common production process for these wheels is low pressure die casting. The process is subject to numerous defects, including microporosity, cold shuts, cold folds, misruns and inclusions. Scrap rates at the caster of the order of 10% are not uncommon. Many wheels also have large production runs, into the hundreds of thousands of wheels per year. Thus, the cost savings from even small reductions in scrap rate have the potential to be quite significant.Most of the defects are associated with the filling and solidification processes in the mold. The molds are air cooled, and the placement and sizing of cooling passages is currently as much art as science. The ultimate goal of this project is to improve that situation, by implementing simulation procedures that enable engineering design methods to be used in die and process specification."

In most mining operations the ore undergoes several processes such as drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, grinding and liberation to become the final salable product. Drilling and blasting is an important step in this process chain and itÆs results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. The value created per ton of broken ore is the difference between the price it commands when sold as the final product and the cost to produce it. Traditionally, the total process in the mining industry is classified into two groups as mining and milling. These are managed as separate cost centres inspite of the interdependency. Each process has a budget and production target and emphasis is usually on maximising production (tons) and minimising cost rather than the overall profitability of the whole business unit. The efficiency of each process is considered to be satisfactory as long as they are within budget and meet the production targets. The mine and mill managers usually try to optimise each process independently rather than the entire process. This paper discusses the potential pitfalls of decreasing the drilling and blasting cost per ton of broken rock without considering its impact on downstream processes. It introduces a holistic approach to blast optimisation by identifying and measuring the leverage that blast results have on different downstream processes and then optimising the blast design to achieve the results that maximise the overall profitability rather than just minimising the drilling and blasting costs. This paper demonstrates the benefits of such a holistic approach to blasting based on computer model simulations and field studies from metal and open cut coal mining.

"Cokes play an important role of spacer in blast furnace. However, they degenerate during Boudouard reaction. Blast furnace cokes are reacted with pure C02 at I 072 to 1673 K. Reaction rate was obtained by the weight change of spherical specimen. The specimen after reaction was examined by microscopic observation. The reaction rate increased with temperature and was expressed by two Arrhenius type lines. The activation energy was 126 KJ/mol at higher temperature than 13 73 K and 202 KJ/mol at lower temperature range. At the higher temperature range, the reaction proceeded from the surface leaving unreacted core, whereas homogeneously whole inside at lower temperature. The porosity increased from the center to surface at higher temperature, whereas it was almost constant at lower temperature.IntroductionThe cokes have the function of fuel, reductant and spacer to keep gas and liquid flow in the blast furnace. Thus, the reaction mechanism of coke with several gas and the strength after the reaction should be important factor to control the blast furnace operation. The reaction mechanism of coke with C02 has been studied extensively. The rate equations were derived by Gadsby[ I], Ergun[2] and Turkdogan and Vinters[3]. They were compared and discussed by Kobayashi and Omori [ 4]. Effect of crystallization degree on the reaction rate was examined by Kashiwaya and Ishii[5]. Catalytic enhancement effect of ash componets have been clarified by Kashiwaya et. al. [6]. Although degradation of coke in blast furnace has been examined recently[7], however, the degradation of coke after the reaction with C02 has not been well clarified yet. In the present work, the metallurgical coke specimen was heated in N2 and C02 and the reaction mechanism and degradation behavior after the reaction was investigated."

"Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

"Geological controls and constraints in space and time define the milieu of the nickel deposits of Southern Africa. Primary, magmatic deposits are of two types, e.g. synvolcanic or syntectonic deposits confined to certain orogenic domains, and those related to intracratonic, post-orogenic magmatism, e.g. the Great Dyke, the Bushveld Complex and the Insizwa intrusion. Epigenetic and supergene deposits form a separate, unrelated group and are of minor economic importance.The metallogenic evolution of syntectonic nickel deposits is particularly well illustrated in the Zimbabwean Province, where the relationships between Archaean greenstone development and nickel mineralization are best illustrated. Volumetrically subordinate, nickel-poor greenstones in the 3500 m.y. old Sebakwian Group are followed by more common komatiite development in the Lower Greenstones (3000 m.y.), and, finally, by very significant komatiites with important nickel mineralization in the 2700 m.y. old Upper Greenstones of the Bulawayan Group. Comparable nickel mineralization is not known in the Raapvaal Province, in spite of ubiquitous komatiitic magmatism of the Onverwacht Group (3500 m.y.) and other greenstone sequences. No komatiitic rocks younger than about 3200 m.y. are known in this region, orogenic activity in the Kaapvaal tectonic province having ceased at about 3100 m.y., whereas the Zimbabwe Province remained tectonically active until at least 2600 m.y.The tectonic environment, host-rock petrology and mode of emplacement, as well as some details of the nickel mineralization, are the parameters employed to classify the Southern African magmatic nickel deposits. A rating of the deposits is introduced that reflects the original resources of the deposit, its average nickel content, its mining history and potential to facilitate ready comparison with and assessment of the nickel deposits listed in the classification, as well as some important nickel deposits worldwide."

The scope of this report is to examine the aforementioned hypothesis by performing a detailed analytical comparison of a P&H electric rope shovel to an O&K diesel powered hydraulic excavator. In order to complement the integrity of the concluding results, two different size categories will be analysed in order to demonstrate that the findings can be extrapolated and applied to all the machinesÆ size classes. These two size classes are categorised by their bucket sizes and they are in the range of 43 - 58 cubic metres and 23 - 26 cubic metres. It should be noted that electric powered hydraulic excavators will not be considered in this report. In order to compare the electric and hydraulic types, the machine variants that will be analysed are commercial cost-effectiveness and operational flexibility. Although operational flexibility can be an ambiguous characteristic, a clear and thorough definition describing its exact meaning has been included. In order to simplify this study, all the data collected for this comparison have been for overburden removal, eliminating the variation that occurs with the movements of the shovel when selectively mining in the ore deposit. Thus, it ensures that all the data that is compared stems from a common origin for all the shovels. In other words the information will be compared when digging in the same material, loading into the same sized haul trucks, and when possible, with the same operators. Theoretical data received form the respective manufacturers, and actual data obtained from Mount Whaleback, was used for this comparison. This leads to the final comparison, where the operational flexibility and the cost-effectiveness are evaluated, with respect to their individual importance, ultimately influencing the final recommendation.

In cyanide leaching procedure, achieving an acceptable efficiency for silver and gold is very time-consuming, thus, enough studies have not been performed for optimization and modeling of this process. The kinetics of cyanide leaching includes two steps: first step comprises a sharp slope while the other has a slight increasing trend. In the present study, in order to reduce the time and cost, the cyanide leaching process of a sulfide silver/gold ore was optimized in the first period. The applied parameters and their ranges are: temperature 20-40 (°C); time 1-8 (hrs); cyanide concentration 1-2 (mole cyanide / mole Cu); the percentage of solid to liquid 1-2 (%) and pH 10-12. For design of experiments fractional factorial 2(5-1) was used. Also four center points were applied to increase the accuracy of the model. In addition, by analysis of variance (ANOVA) the most effective parameters were identified and the optimized condition was determined. A regression model was proposed to describe the effects of independent variables and their interacting role on silver recovery. Results showed that the model was linear for silver and nonlinear for gold. In the gold recovery process, the two important parameters are time and pH with the former being more effective. Due to the existence of cyanide ions in the medium, temperature and cyanide concentration have less influence in the gold recovery process. Solid to liquid ratio, in addition, comprises a slight negative impact on the procedure. This emphasizes the different kinetics of silver/ gold cyanide leaching. Finally, using the optimum condition the amount of silver and gold obtained were 61% and 67% in 8 hours, respectively. Many of us are familiar with the history of oil in the Province of Ontario, but for the benefit of those who have never heard the story I will repeat it. In 185 7 J. H. Williams, of Hamilton, an old-country Scotchman, who had the advantage of experience gained from the primitive methods used for refining the oil collected at seepages in Roumania, heard of the "gum beds" along Black creek in Enniskillen township, Lambton county. He erected a small plant in the bush and refined illuminating oil, where the village of Old Springs now stands. The labor of collecting this thick ?gummy substance from the sluggish water of the creek, prompted him to dig a well, the next year ( 1858), in the hope of obtaining a greater quantity. When his excavation reached a gravel bed on top of the rock, oil, resembling "lubricating oil of commerce", rose several feet. Several of these wells were dug and his refining business flourished. The following year the Drake well, in Pennsylvania, was drilled into rock, resulting in an oil find which encouraged one James Shaw to make a similar attempt on Black creek. With a spring-pole drill he completed his well in the spring of 1861 to a depth of 160 feet, and at that depth struck a gusher that flowed uncontrolled for several days. Great excitement followed and the village of Oil Springs had a mushroom growth. The Petrolia field was discovered in 1865. Lick followed up the Thames with a spring-pole rig testing the formations along that river and discovered the original Bothwell field in 1865. "Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) tests were conducted on high-oil content, paraffin-based wax used in wax-coated granular composites. These composites make up the surface of synthetic Thoroughbred horse racetracks used in North America. The modulus and damping response from the DMTA tests were correlated with the dynamic triaxial shear strength response of the bulk track material taken at two different operational temperatures and at four strain rates. The purpose of these tests is to understand the mechanisms of shear strengthening of the bulk track material as the wax is heated through the first crystalline solid to liquid nominal transition temperature. Previous work using differential scanning calorimetry confirmed that under common operational surface temperatures, the wax coatings undergo distinct thermal transitions. The resulting increase in triaxial shear strength values affects the consistency of the racetrack which, in turn, can potentially affect Thoroughbred racing performance and safety of the track surface.IntroductionSynthetic granular composite materials are being used in nine Thoroughbred horse racetracks in the United States as well as in other tracks around the world. In one case, their use was mandated by the state of California in 2007 due to testimony that these tracks were significantly safer than traditional dirt tracks [1]. Several synthetic tracks have shown substantial reductions in injuries since switching to synthetics; one California track showed a 75% reduction in catastrophic horse injuries during the first year as compared to the previous year racing on a dirt track [2]. The composition of the tracks in the U.S. generally consist of silica sand (>70%), polymer fibers (<5%), and rubber particles (0-15%) all coated with a paraffin-based, high oil content wax [3, 4]. In a recent study of several synthetic racetracks, to include the track location in this study, the oil content ranged from 34 to over 44% by mass [5]."

"In developing a backfill system handling tailings feed to and from the storage silo, it is necessary to establish a slurry laboratory to develop the technology and silo design criteria. This paper presents the principles involved in such development and the importance of testing principles for optimizing the slurry system. Evaluation procedure based on experiments is applicable to a wide range of materials and allows silo design by scaling up the data gained from model tests. Silo simulation has been successful to design and operation, so becomes an effective approach to backfill applications. IntroductionThe silo is a device comprising specialized equipment and operating with related procedures for storing and handling the mill rejects as backfill slurry. It provides a steady supply of the solids slurry, prepared at desired pulp density under the continuous feed conditions. Because the silo system is designed to accomplish specific objectives when dealing with a particular mill tailings slurry, it is necessary to characterize certain slurry properties, behaviour of the solids slurry and understand the silo performance to establish design criteria. Bench-scale, pilot-scale and dewafull- scale experiments were employed in developing the load-storage-discharge system, and routine procedures are now available for pre-design testing. Silo model experiments and full-scale tests were conducted to define the design parameters and evaluate the silo performance. A silo can be designed by scaling up the silo model geometry and data obtained during tests.Since the early 1960s, silo backfill systems have been widely established. The shape and size of the silo and the operation procedure, as practised, all appear to be relevant to successful operation. Understanding the basic material properties and behaviour of solids slurry retained in the silo will help perfect the silo design, operation procedure and, consequently, improve the silo performance."

"This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines as part of a program of the Solid Fuels Administration to encourage the utilization of anthracite fines, the objective being to determine the practicability of using anthracite fines in the manufacture of packagedThe experimental loss of packaged fuel covered by this report were made at a commercial plant using the Glenn Smith process and ordinarily making packaged fuel from Pocahontas screenings. These lots included several made from straight antimacite mines and others made from various blends of anthracite fines with four different bituminous coals. In all cases an asphalt binder was used. Determinations of the physical properties and the cobustion characteristics o the various samples of packaged fuel were made by the. Bureau of Mines at the Central Experiment Station.The physical tests indicated that a packaged fuel of sufficient strength for ordinary handling can be made from straight anthracite coal or from a wide variety of blends of anthracite fixes with bitunimous coal, using asphaltic binder. However the combustion tests indicated that packaged fuel made from anthracite alone tended to crumble excessively during burning and that as much as 30 to 50 percent of a caking coal may be required In the mixture to produce a block having satisfactory combustion characteristics.The authors wish to acknowledge the. splendid cooperation of Messrs.
