The newly implemented mineral law framework exacerbated the need to clarify the roles and responsibilities of mine and land surveyors in the preparation and registration of plans and diagrams. The main concern is that survey tasks may be performed by persons who are not considered competent under the different laws. The methodology used was to analyse historic and present legislation on the issue in order to formulate a narrow interpretation of the current requirements. The major findings are tabulated to present a summary of who is responsible for which areas of survey.

The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental sampling error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centred on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a) of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis method and the heterogeneity test method purport to provide such constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine, and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponeng and Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, and the third is an Archaean-type shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appear to be too small and do not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

The gradual increase in Cr2O3 levels of UG-2 ores has become a matter of concern for platinum producers in South Africa due to the formation of chromite spinels in melters. The effect of bulk FeOx/MgO ratio, Cr2O3, temperature and oxygen partial pressure on phase stability and composition in the system FeOx-MgOSiO2- Cr2O3-Al2O3-CaO has been studied between 1400°C and 1600°C using the drop-quench technique. An increase in temperature was found to result in a decrease in [Fe/Cr]spinel. An increase in bulk FeOx/MgO caused Mg, Al and Cr in spinel to decrease, forming more magnetite relative to other spinels. [Fe]spinel decreased and [Cr]glass increased with a decrease in oxygen partial pressure.

This paper refers to the open cut mining practice developed at Western Mining Corporation's Kalgoorlie Gold Operations (K.G.O.). Mining activity was centred attwo areas, namely W.M.C.'s Siberia "Sand King" and"Missouri" open cuts plus W.M.C.'s "Great Boulder" and K.M.A.'s "Horshoe" and "Morrison -Hannan's Star" open cuts in Fimiston.Kalgoorlie Gold Operations was set up initially to look after W.M.C.'s open cut interests in and about the Kalgoorlie area. The first mine commenced was, the Sand King open cut, approx 75 km NW of Kalgoorlie. it was here that the requirement for a highly selective form of mining first became apparent.

THE slag from the blast furnaces having been granulated, a representative sample is taken to the sample mill. It is then dried, crushed through a 100-mesh screen, intimately mixed, and packeted for assay purposes.METHOD OF ANALYSISINSOLUBLEWeigh 1 grm. of the finely-pulverized slag into a 3t-in. casserole, moisten with a little water to prevent sticking, cover with a clock glass, and add 20 cc. of hot acid (1 HNOs, 3 HCI, 4 H2 0). Evaporate slowly to dryness on a hot plate and bake (without overheating) until all the gelatinous silica is dehydrated. Cool, add 20 cc. HCI (1-1), and boil gently for several minutes; filter into a 300-cc. beaker, cleaning out the casserole thoroughly with a rubber-tipped glass rod. Wash residue with hot distilled water and transfer it to a No. 1 porcelain crucible. Dry, ignite, cool in a desiccator and weigh as total insoluble matter. Dilute filtrate to 200 cc. and neutralize some of the excess HCI with NHa.OH. Warm, and pass H2S for 15 min. Filter and wash withhot water. Boil off H2 S, oxidize with 5 cc. HNOll , reduce bulk of the solution by evaporation. to about 100 cc., and transfer to a 250 cc. flask.SILICAFuse insoluble residue over a blast lamp in a platinum crucible with three or four times its weight of anhydrous carbonate of soda, for 10 to 15 minutes, or until decomposition is complete. Cool, and extract fusion in an 8-in. evaporating dish with HCI (1-1); rinse crucible and cover with distilled water, and evaporate to dryness over a water bath. This paper discusses how design differences in FLP diesel equipment in underground coal mines came about. "Design standards" tend to create differences between countries while fostering uniformity among products of competing manufacturers. "Performance requirements," on the other hand, tend to eliminate differences between countries while encouraging competitive development of better products. Examples of regulations from the U.S., Canada. Great Britain. Australia. South Africa, etc., are used to illustrate differences in the design and certification of diesel equipment for underground coal mines.

PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, Minnesota. Laboratory investigations had led to the development of the PLATSOL process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and PGM’s. To complete the pre-feasibility study, a fully integrated ten-day pilot plant trial was undertaken, comprising of: high temperature (>220ºC) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5-10 g/L chloride (the PLATSOL process), followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM’s recovery from solution, conventional Cu SX/EW and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate assaying 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t Au, 2.2 g/t Pt and 9.9 g/t Pd. Laboratory results were fully confirmed and with minor adjustments of the laboratory PLATSOL® conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: Cu 99.6%, Ni 98.9%, Co 96%, Pd 94.6%, Pt 96% and Au 89.4%.

The construction of mine headframes of reinforced concrete is not a new departure as many structures have been built of this, material particularly in Canada and South Africa. This type of construction has been satisfactorily tested in service and is now accepted by the mining fraternity.The two headframes at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited are the first structures of this type to be built in Australia, and provide an interesting application of reinforced concrete design and construction.Reasons for Adoption of ConcreteDuring 1947 the writer visited D.S.A. and Canada and inspected three headframes, of reinforced concrete construction.Leading details are as follows:(i) Hollinger Gold Mines. (Timmins, Ontario) : Height of sheaves 110 ft. Shaft has provision for 4 skips each of 12,000 lb. capacity. Structure incorporates surface crushing plant.(ii) International Nickel Corporation-Murray Shaft (Sudbury): Height to sheaves 153 ft. 6 in. Shaft provides for 2-12 ton skips and 2 cages. Surface crushing plant built integrally with frame.(iii) Asbestos-Johns Manviae (Quebec): Height of sheaves 116 ft. Shaft provides for 2 skips 200 cu. ft.

A new technique for reaming the holes has been tested. This technique is available for reaming a hole at its deep end creating an enlarged cavity that has helicoidal grooves oriented at less than 40 degrees to the hole axis. This technique increases bolt resistance by a factor 1.3-1.62; its bearing capacity by 3 times and enhances underground roadway stability. This technique is suitable for great depth (1000m and greater) and weak wet rocks.

The Iron and Steel Committee of the American Institute, of mining and Metallurgical Engineers held a joint session with the American Foundrymen's Association during the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1928, for the purpose of discussing blast-furnace operations and the character of pig iron and castings. Dr. Richard Moldenke presided. H.. H. Sweetser, who was named on the program as the presiding officer of the session, was unable to be present, but sent a letter in which he said: " The meeting we had here last year and the meeting held in Chicago last June showed a desire on the part of blast-furnace men and users of pig iron to get the facts regarding the influence on castings made from pig iron produced in blast furnaces under varying conditions of temperature, mixture and local furnace operations. It has been my hope that at this Round Table we might he able to formulate a series of tests that, would give us the desired information. "Several independent blast-furnace investigations have. been, and still are being, carried on in different sections of the country. The furnaces investigated include a southern furnace, a middle-west furnace, a western furnace and a Chicago district furnace. The results so far show distinct characteristics for each of the four furnaces. It is possible that a furnace in the eastern part of the United States would be different from all the others. "It is hoped that a plan of action can be worked out at your meeting today whereby the IT. S. Bureau of Mines will be able, to carry on more extensive work in connection with the research departments of the different iron and steel companies and the big consumers of pig iron. "No one group can get all of the, information but if the different investigations can be coordinated it will he possible for us to (Iran. conclusions regarding the effects of varying conditions in blast-furnace practice on the pig iron produced and the castings made there from." Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have been touted as having the potential to spearhead a nuclear renaissance. Proponents of this view cite the relative advantages of SMRs over larger nuclear plants as reason for their optimism. Some of these merits include potential economies of mass production deriving from modular factory production, enhanced safety features, the ability to locate reactors in remote areas, and reduced requirements for technical workforces to install and maintain SMRs. Despite the optimism surrounding SMRs, nuclear power is still a contentious issue for many Canadians. The growth of nuclear power remains adversely affected by concerns over issues such as: the health and safety consequences of nuclear power generation, environmental impacts, proliferation of nuclear materials, terrorism, and radioactive waste disposal (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), 2010). Personal values, past nuclear accidents, and lack of trust in the industry are other factors influencing attitudes toward nuclear energy (IAEA, 2005). In Canada, three main areas where SMRs could be used have been identified. These include: a. Traditional, on-grid power generation, especially in provinces looking for zero-emissions replacements for CO2-emitting coal plants. B. Remote off grid communities that currently rely on diesel or fuel oil power generation. There are 279 off-grid communities in Canada, many of them being Aboriginal communities (NRCan, ND). Notably, all communities in each of Canada’s three territories qualify as remote. C. Resource extraction sites, such as mining and oil and gas extraction sites. Many of Canada’s principal producing mines and active mineral exploration projects are located within close proximity of Aboriginal communities. Any proposed implementation of small nuclear plants would, require the support of the local population, which is largely Indigenous in the northern regions. The possible deployment of SMRs raises important issue relating to consultation and accommodation of Aboriginal concerns regarding potential SMR deployment. This is especially pertinent given Canada’s pending implementation of the provisions of UNDRIP. One of the provisions of UNDRIP that has attracted a lot of attention is the one on Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). Drawing on previously published information, this paper discusses some of the challenges posed by FPIC for the deployment of SMRs. The next section outlines the provisions of FPIC and its implementation in the Canadian context. Section 3, details some of the challenges posed by FPIC to the deployment of SMRs, while Section 4 provides some concluding comments.

Wind blast is the sudden movement of air displaced by the massive collapse of roof rock in underground openings and is experienced as a high velocity flow of air through adjacent workings. The initial flow in the outbye direction is often followed by 'suck back', that is a reverse flow of air towards the newly created void. As part of the Wind Blast Project, undertaken by The University of New South Wales, Department of Mining Engineering, a physical model was constructed. One of the functions of the laboratory wind blast model is to provide insight into the dynamics of the interaction between the falling strata and the air being compressed below. During a collapse, some air is expelled into the surrounding roadways while the remainder penetrates towards the top of the roof elements. In this paper two aspects of the rock mass properties which influence the phenomenon are considered: - Flow paths through the falling roof element, ie the permeability of the roof element; - Bed separation prior to the fall which introduces a void above the roof element. A series of tests was carried out utilising the physical model in order to investigate the relationships between the flow of air through the simulated roadways, the variations in gauge pressure above and below the falling roof element, and the acceleration and terminal velocity of the latter, all as a function of the flow paths through the roof element and of the extent of the void above. The results of comprehensive tests using the wind blast physical model suggested that the time history of outbye air flow in the simulated roadway comprises two distinct phases. a) A primary phase, characterised by a high velocity flow of air which exhibits a peak and corresponds to the period during which the roof element is accelerating. The peak air velocity is related to the acceleration of the roof element. b) A secondary phase, characterised by a residual air flow of a lesser velocity than in the primary phase and corresponding to the period during which the roof element is falling at its terminal velocity. The velocity of the residual air flow is directly proportional to the terminal velocity of the roof element. In a monolithic collapse of a roof element it was shown that the presence of flow paths in the roof element increased the air velocity in the roadway in both the primary and the secondary phases. The presence of an air-filled void above the roof element, on the other hand, influenced the air velocity only in the primary phase by increasing the peak air velocity. The overall duration of the process was however decreased as a result. 'plug type' collapses, where roof failure extends to the ground surface, potentially generate the highest peak air velocities likely to be encountered during wind blasts.

"FOREWORDVirtually all government agencies undertook many additional responsibilities during the period immediately preceding World War II; these responsibilities increased vastly in importance and scope after the actual declaration of war following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Bureau of Mines was one of the agencies thus affected, and it was called upon to perform many duties foreign to its normal peacetime activities.The Health and Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, at that time designated the Health and Safety Branch, was given several important and difficult duties and responsibilities of an unusual nature because of the war while of necessity-continuing its normal functions of assisting the mineral industries in the preservation of life and health and the protection of property, this being of especial importance in wartime because of the pre-eminent importance of having maximum output of essentially all types of mineral products. Some of these additional functions were given to the Health and Safety Division because the organization of the Division, with its field set-up dividing the Nation into districts with competent, experienced personnel in charge of its work, provided the nucleus of personnel and procedure through which rapid and smooth expanded functioning was feasible.In addition to the responsibilities directly attributable to definite war activities, such as the administration of the wartime Federal. Explosives Act and the Mineral Production Security Branch a new branch (then designated division) was formed to investigate coal-mine health and safety problems after the enactment of the Federal Coal-Mine Inspections and Investigations Act, which became a law on May 7, 1941, but which actually began to function actively after the declaration of war in December 1941.The purpose of this publication is to provide a brief historical record of the activities of the Health and Safety Division as a whole and of its individual branches during the war. The detailed record has been filed in the Archives Building, Washington, D. C."

The application of magnesium as an absorbable biomaterial demanded the consideration of the alloy composition, the mechanical properties and the corrosion a special adapted material development in terms of the human biological system. Magnesium for technical applications mostly comprised alloying elements up to 10 wt%. Thereby often metals (e.g. rare earth and aluminum) with high toxic potentials are used to optimize the mechanical properties. To minimize toxic reactions during the degradation of a absorbable magnesium alloy, the Mg-Ca system is being selected and investigated because both elements belong to the mineral nutrients. Rods and small tubes are produced by extrusion of gravity die casting billets (Ca-content 0.4 to 4.0wt%). The positive grain fining influence of calcium and its improvement of the corrosion behavior are additional advantages. The microstructure, the mechanical properties and the corrosion attitude are investigated. The results show that an optimal composition of micro alloyed Mg-Ca and ideally processing parameters lead to 16% strain and a tensile strength up to 185MPa. Electrochemical investigations and measurements of the hydrogen production demonstrate the influence of the Ca-content to the corrosion behavior of the investigated alloys.

The oxygen bomb-is used extensively for determining sulphur in petroleum, although it has been suspected that the results obtained with this method are somewhat lower than the true varies. In this paper are compared the results given by the oxygen-bomb and Carius methods, the latter being generally accepted as the standard procedure for the determination of sulphur in organic compounds. The Carius determinations given hero were made in connection with a special study of this method.4 Only petroleum oils of the less-volatile type are covered in the present work. Summary and Conclusions. When used with oils containing 2.3 to 0.15 per cent of sulphur the oxygen-bomb method gives results that are consistenly if slightly lower than those obtained with the Carius method. This variation, for the oils used, amounts to 3.1 per cent (on tae basis of sulphur present) for the sample containing 2.47 per cent of sulphur, and gradually increases (as the percentage of sulphur in the oils decreases) to 7.3 per cent for the oil containing 0.15 per cent of sulphur. With the oils studied the presence of ammonium nitrate in the bomb does not influence the results materially.

This is a critical examination of the theory that the amount of carbon necessary to form the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid is lowered by the addition of any carbide-forming element. Although this theory has been built up over a long period of years, it appears, in the light of recent published investigations upon the ternary constitutional diagrams of iron with carbon and other alloying elements, to be no longer tenable. A survey of these new results, summarized below, shows that (as is known) some metals lower the carbon content of the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid, whereas others raise it, but (as not heretofore clearly set forth) some first move the eutectoid in one direction and then, at higher concentrations, shift it in the opposite direction. Moreover, these differences in behavior exist even among the common alloying metals classed as carbide formers. PART I Influence of Body-centered Cubic Elements The effects of the various body-centered cubic metals (chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, columbium and tan. talum) are reviewed individually. Iron-carbon-chromium System.—In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Chromium, Kinzel and Crafts1 concluded that the carbon content of the eutectoid is lowered by increasing the chromium content. The quantitative influence of chromium on the eutectoid point of iron-carbon alloys was shown by Monypenny2 (Fig. I) and no data have been forthcoming to refute his findings. Iron-carbon-tungsten System.—Gregg,3 in the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Tungsten, accepted the data showing that tungsten decreases the amount of carbon required to form the eutectoid. The influence of tungsten on the eutectoid percentage of carbon as determined by Oberhoffer and Daeves4 is shown in Fig. 2; these results have received general approval. , I ron-carbon-molybdenum System.—In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Molybdenum, Gregg5 reviewed the work of Guillet,6 Swinden,7 and ReedI8 all showing that molybdenum lowered the carbon content of the eutectoid, whereas Takei9 contradicted this conclusion. Svetchnikoff and Alferova,10 a little later, showed that large additions of molybdenum shift the eutectoid to the right. These last-named investigators found that molybdenum, up to 1.2 per cent, shifts the pearlite point and the point of maximum solubility of cementite in the gamma phase only slightly in the direction of lower carbon content; on the other hand, increasing amounts of molyb-S
